IN OCTOBER 2012 I WAS DRIVING ON LINCOLN DRIVE IN PHILA. I WAS GOING AROUND THE FIRST CORNER (TO THE RIGHT). ONCE THE TURN WAS COMPLETE, I ATTEMPTED TO TURN THE CAR IN THE OTHER DIRECTION BUT THE CAR KEPT GOING RIGHT. MY CAR ENDED UP SPINNING 270 DEGREES BEFORE IT CAME TO A STOP. I TURNED THE CAR OFF WHILE I GATHERED MYSELF AND TURNED THE CAR BACK ON AGAIN. A COP CHECKED ON ME TO SEE IF I WAS OK, THEN I WENT ABOUT MY BUSINESS. THANKFULLY THERE WAS NO DAMAGE TO MY CAR OR OTHERS. FAST FORWARD TO 11/30/16. I WAS TAKING THE BACKROADS TO WORK LIKE I NORMALLY DO. I MADE A RIGHT TURN ONTO A ROAD THEN ATTEMPTED TO STRAIGHTEN THE CAR OUT. THE CAR KEPT GOING RIGHT, SO I HAD TO YANK THE STEERING WHEEL TO GET IT STRAIGHT GAIN. A FEW MILES DOWN THE SAME ROAD I WAS GOING AROUND A BEND TO THE RIGHT. ONCE AGAIN THE STEERING GOT STUCK IN ONE DIRECTION AND I ALMOST LOST CONTROL OF THE CAR TRYING TO GET THE CAR STRAIGHT AGAIN. I WENT TO A LOCAL MECHANIC TO CHECK OUT THE PROBLEM. THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY COULDN'T DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM BUT IT MAY BE RELATED TO A POWER STEERING RECALL REPAIR THAT HAD BEEN DONE MY CAR IN APRIL 2015 AND THAT I SHOULD GO BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP. I WENT TO THE DEALERSHIP THAT PERFORMED THE REPAIR AND THE SAID THAT THE MOTOR IN THE STEERING COLUMN IS FAILING DUE TO AGE AND MILEAGE OF THE VEHICLE I NEEDED A WHOLE NEW STEERING COLUMN. TOTAL BILL: $2400. I CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER AND THE AGREED WITH THE DEALERSHIP. IN ORDER TO GET MY CAR BACK FROM THE DEALERSHIP I HAVE TO PAY A $115 DIAGNOSTIC FEE AND SIGN OFF THAT I AM DRIVING A "POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS" VEHICLE. *TR
AIRBAG LIGHT TURNS ON AND STAYS ON INTERMITTENTLY. GOOGLE SEARCH HAS INDICATED THIS PROBLEM AFFECTS MANY ELANTRA OWNERS
DRIVERS SUN VISOR UNABLE TO STAY IN A RETRACTED POSITION. REMAINS IN AN OPEN POSITION WHICH OBSCURES VIEW OF DRIVER. SAME CONDITION EXISTS FOR PASSANGER SIDE SUN VISOR
VEHICLE ROLLED BACK WHEN IN DRIVE, FOOT BRAKE DID NOT WORK, EMERGENCY BREAK WAS ENGAGED TO STOP VEHICLE MOVEMENT. ESC LIGHT WENT ON. BROUGHT TO DEALER AND WAS TOLD THE VIN WAS NOT PART OF THE RECALL. THE MAKE, MODEL, AND MODEL YEAR ARE ALL PART OF THE RECALL NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 13V113000 . THIS VEHICLE SHOULD BE A PART OF THE RECALL AS THE PROBLEM IS EXACTLY AS DESCRIBED IN THE ABOVE NHSTA CAMPAIGN NUMBER.

THE VEHICLE WAS SERVICED PER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V100000 (STEERING), BUT THE REMEDY FAILED TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE RECURRED WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT AN UNKNOWN WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED AFTER THE RECALL REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 36,000. UPDATED 01/10/17*LJ *TR
ON 8/16/16 AT APPROXIMATELY 1130 HOURS THE AFOREMENTIONED 2008 HYUNDAI ELANTRA BEARING A VIN NUMBER OF [XXX], HAD SPONTANEOUSLY CAUGHT ON FIRE WITHOUT CAUSE. LOCAL FIRE DEPARTMENT CAME TO THE SCENE AND EXTINGUISH THE FLAMES SUSPECTED IT TO BE A MANUFACTURERS DEFECT OF POSSIBLE FAULTY ELECTRICAL WIRING. I HAVE CONTACTED HYUNDAI DIRECTLY AND BROUGHT TO THEIR ATTENTION THE INCIDENT IN WHICH OCCURRED ON THE SAID DATE. HYUNDAI IS STILL IN THE PROCESS OF HAVING A THIRD PARTY VEHICLE INSPECTION COMPANY EN ROUTE TO CONDUCT THE PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION. THERE HAS ONLY BEEN A RECALL TO MY KNOWLEDGE IN 2011 IN WHICH I PERSONALLY TOOK THE SAID VEHICLE TO HYUNDAI OF WELSEY CHAPEL FLORIDA AND NEVER HAD A PROBLEM SINCE. IT SHOULD BE NOTED THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED FOR APPROXIMATELY 3 HOURS BEFORE IT CAUGHT ON FIRE. I AM AWARE OF THE PAST RECALLS CONDUCTED BY HYUNDAI DUE TO THE POSSIBILITY OF ENGINE FIRES AND FEEL AS THOUGHT MY VEHICLE IS ONE OF THE VEHICLES AFFECTED MY THE NEGLIGENCE IN THE MANUFACTURERS END. I URGE AND PLEAD YOU TO LOOK INTO THIS MATTER AS MY ONLY MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION HAS BEEN TOTALED DUE TO THE BIZARRE FIRE. PASSENGER SIDE SUN VISOR FAILED. THE PLASTIC THAT HOLDS IT TO THE CEILING OF THE CAR BECOMES VERY BRITTLE AND BREAKS. THE VISOR FELL INTO THE FIELD OF VISION WHEN MY WIFE WAS DRIVING. SHE DECIDED TO PULL THE ENTIRE VISOR OFF, SEVERING THE WIRES THAT IT WAS DANGLING BY. THIS WAS A SAFER OPTION THAN HAVING THE VISOR FLY AROUND ON THE HIGHWAY. I CONTACTED THE LOCAL HYUNDAI DEALER WHERE WE BOUGHT THE CAR NEW TO ASK IF THERE IS A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN OR RECALL ABOUT THIS. THE DEALER WASN'T HELPFUL AND SAID THE REPLACEMENT WOULD BE OUT OF MY POCKET, AND SAID THERE'S NO RECALL, THEN SUGGESTED TO CONTACT HYUNDAI HEADQUARTERS. I OPENED A CASE WITH THEM AFTER INFORMING THEM THAT THERE IS ALREADY A CAMPAIGN THAT EXISTS FOR THE SONATA FOR THE EXACT SAME ISSUE AND A QUICK GOOGLE SEARCH REVEALS TONS OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS ISSUE IN THE ELANTRA AS WELL.

THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED BRUISES TO THE CHEST THAT REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 48,000.

THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED BY THE INSURANCE COMPANY. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT DIAGNOSED THE VEHICLE WITH FAILED WIRES. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 40,000.
NO DAMAGE, BUT I NEED TO REPORT THE HYUNDAI PRACTICE. WHILE I WAS ON A HIGHWAY, EPS LAMP CAME ON AND STEERING BECAME REALLY TOUGH. ONCE I PULLED OVER AND RE-STARTED THE CAR, THE LAMP WENT OFF AND I COULD STEER WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS. I FOUND OUT THAT MY CAR WAS ACTUALLY RECALLED FOR THE EPS SYSTEM, SO BROUGHT MY CAR TO A DEALER. THE DEALER TOLD ME THAT THE CAMPAIGN IS 'CLOSED', THEY NEED TO CHARGE ME TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM..... 'WAIT, I JUST NEED TO GET WHATEVER YOU FIXED FOR THE RECALL NOTICE?' NO, THE CAMPAIGN IS CLOSED SO WE NEED TO DIAGNOSE THE SYSTEM, AND IF NOTHING IS WRONG, WE CANNOT DO ANYTHING. IS THIS PRACTICE CORRECT? THEY SAID THEY FOUND ADDITIONAL ISSUES WITH THE STEERING SENSORS BUT IT'S INCLUDED IN THE DIAGNOSTICS PACKAGE....
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE AIR BAG WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED AND THE ODOR OF AIR BAG POWDER EMANATED FROM THE VENTS OF THE VEHICLE. THE AIR BAG NEVER DEPLOYED. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A CERTIFIED MECHANIC WHO WAS NOT ABLE TO IDENTIFY THE FAILURE. THE DEALER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE; HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 230,000.
CAR LOSES POWER WHEN DRIVING CAR AT LOW SPEED, CAR JUST SHUTS DOWN AND WOULD NEED TO PLACE IN PARK AND RESTART THE CAR, ALSO LOST POWER STEERING WHILE DRIVING CAR ON THE FREEWAY, CARD WHEEL LOCKED AND CAR LOST ALL POWER, WAS ABLE TO PLACE IT IN PARK AND RESTARTED IT, BUT WAS WITH OUT POWER STEERING, CAR SHAKES WHEN DRIVING PASSED 70 MILES AN HR.
I WAS DRIVING ON A FREEWAY WHEN MY EPS LIGHT CAME ON AND WHEN I BEGAN TO EXIT MY CAR DID NOT WANT TO STEER. I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE GAS AND STRONGLY STEERED RIGHT. AT THE STOP SIGN I TOOK BOTH HANDS ON THE STEERING WHEEL AND MADE A LEFT TURN. EVERY TURN HOME WAS DIFFICULT. THEY POWER STEERING WAS NOT WORKING.IT WAS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO STEER THE CAR. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND I STARTED THE CAR AND IT STEERED FINE. I WENT TO THE DEALER AND THEY PUT IT ON THE DIAG. CHECCK AND THEY SAY IT IS C1290 STEERING TORQUE SENSOR. AT 74,000 MILES YOU CANT STEER YOUR CAR? YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING ME. THEY SAY IT IS NOT WARRANTED BUT $2310.00 PLEASE WILL REPAIR THE PROBLEM. ITS NOT A RECALL ITEM LIKE CAMPAIGN 127 BECAUSE ITS A DIFFERENT PART. ?????
WE PULLED THE CAR OUT OF AN INTERSECTION AND T BONED ANOTHER CAR. BOTH CARS WERE TOTALED IN THIS ACCIDENT, YET NO AIRBAGS DEPLOYED. THERE WAS NO FIRE. THE ACCIDENT HAPPENED ON A FLAT ROADWAY. THE DRIVER OF THE HYUNDAI WAS WEARING HIS SEATBELT. PLEASE SEE PICTURES.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DRIVER OF THE SECOND VEHICLE STATED THAT THE EXTERIOR LIGHTS OF THE CONTACTS VEHICLE FAILED TO ILLUMINATE. THE DETAILS OF THE CRASH WERE UNKNOWN AND RESULTED IN THREE INJURIES THAT REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE THE TECHNICIAN INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE VIN WAS INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 13V113000 (EXTERIOR LIGHTING, SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 93,000.
PASSENGER SIDE SUN VISOR BROKE. THE STEM PORTION THAT HOLDS IT ONTO THE ROOF AND ALSO CHANNELS THE WIRES FOR THE LIGHT, BROKE AND THE DEALAER WANTS $189 FOR A REPLACEMENT
LEAVING THE PARKING LOT AT WALGREEN IN TONAWANDA,NY. I WAS BACKING OUT WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE. PUTTING THE CAR IN DRIVE.THE CAR LEAPED INTO A VERY HIGH ACCELERATED SPEED LIKE A JET WITH THE ENGINE RACING. THE BRAKE DID NOT HELP. THE CAR HIT THE BARRIER BETWEEN THE SIDEWALK AND THE STORE AND THE ENGINE BURST INTO FLAMES.THE DISTANCE WAS ONLY A MATTER OF YARDS.THE AIRBAGS AND SEAT BELT KEPT ME FROM GOING THRU THE WINDSHIELD THE FORCE OF THE CRASH TOTALED THE CAR. THERE WAS NO ONE IN THIS AREA OF THE PARKING LOT THANK GOODNESS IT WAS 10AM SUNDAY MORNING. I DO NOT KNOW WHO CALLED THE FIRE DEPT AND POLICE.. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS PROBLEM. THIS SITUATION HAPPEN SO FAST YOU DON,T HAVE TIME TO BLINK. I AM NOW LEFT WITH NO CAR AND A TWISTED BACK.
START OCTOBER 2015, WHEN I PULL THE SEAT BELT IT GENERATE RATTLING NOISE BUT NO PROBLEM TO BUCKLE UP. I DID NOT AWARE THAT WAS A SAFETY ISSUE. WHEN MY DAUGHTER BORROWED AND DROVE ON THE ROAD LAST WEEK (11/24/2015), SHE HEARD THE NOISE AND TESTED IT BY PULLING OUT QUICKLY, THE SEAT BELT DID NOT HOLD HER BACK. THAT MEANT I WAS DRIVING ON THE ROAD WITHOUT WORKING SEAT BELT FOR TWO MONTHS. PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS, SEE IF ANYWAY CAN WARN THE DRIVER THE DANGEROUS SITUATION. MYSELF JUST WAS NOT SMART ENOUGH TO SEE THIS POTENTIAL SAFETY ISSUE.
I BOUGHT MY CAR NEW IN 2008 -- SINGLE OWNER ALL THIS TIME. WAS DRIVING THE CAR ABOUT 30MPH IN RESIDENTIAL AREA WHEN ALL OF SUDDEN THE EPS LIGHT CAME ON AND POWER STEERING COMPLETELY FAILED. MANUALLY STEERED THE CAR TO NEARBY GARAGE, WHERE THEY FOUND AN ERROR CODE IN THE ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING MODULE. GOOGLE SEARCH SHOWED HYUNDAI HAD A RECALL FOR THIS, AND THIS RECALL WAS PERFORMED ON MY CAR BACK IN MAY. STARTED CAR BACK UP, PROBLEM WAS GONE, SO BROUGHT CAR TO HYUNDAI DEALER, AND THEY WILL RUN DIAGNOSTICS AND CONTACT HYUNDAI FOR NEXT STEPS. I CALLED HYUNDAI MYSELF AND WAS GIVEN A COMPLAINT NUMBER: 8206849. APPARENTLY WHAT THEY DID ON MY RECALL VISIT IN MAY 2015 DID NOT PREVENT THIS PROBLEM FROM HAPPENING. IT WAS SCARY AND DANGEROUS TO HAVE HAPPEN -- THIS IS ABSOLUTELY A SAFETY ISSUE.
I WAS DRIVING MY 2008 HYUNDAI ELANTRA UNDER NORMAL CONDITIONS AND WHEN I ATTEMPTED TO ADJUST THE DRIVER'S SIDE VISOR BY FIRST DISCONNECTING IT FROM THE ATTACHMENT ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE MECHANISM IT FELL, DANGLING FROM IT'S SUPPORT. I THEN HAD TO CONTINUOUSLY HOLD THE VISOR UP WITH MY LEFT HAND UNTIL I COULD PULL OVER TO A SAFE PLACE. MY VISIBILITY WAS IMPAIRED AS WAS MY MOTOR FUNCTIONING AS I WAS LEFT WITH ONLY ONE HAND FREE AND HAD TO FOCUS ON HOLDING THE VISOR UP WITH MY LEFT HAND. MY SAFETY WAS CERTAINLY JEOPORDIZED AS WERE OTHERS IN THE VICINITY OF MY VEHICLE. WHEN I WAS LATER ABLE TO INSPECT THE VISOR, I DETERMINED THAT THE PLASITIC MOUNT HAD BROKEN AWAY ON THE LEFT HAD SIDE. AN EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF FORCE HAS NEVER BEEN EXERTED ON THIS VEHICLE COMPONENT, SO THIS INCIDENT WAS DISCONCERTING.
REAR DRIVER SIDE WHEEL SUDDENLY PARTIALLY SEPARATED FROM VEHICLE SUSPENSION -- WHEEL WAS TILTED-IN AT THE TOP OF WHEEL AND TILTED-OUT OUT AT BOTTOM OF WHEEL -- SEVERELY LIMITING VEHICLE STEERING/BREAKING CONTROL. HYUNDAI DEALER SAID THAT A BOLT AND STRUT REQUIRED REPLACEMENT. HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA (HMA) REPORTED THAT THE SERVICE MANAGER AT ITS DEALER TOLD IT THAT "IT APPEARS THAT THE CONDITION APPEARS TO BE CAUSED BY AN OUTSIDE INFLUENCE". RETURN OF REPLACED PARTS WAS REQUESTED BUT ONLY A STRUT WAS RETURNED BY THE DEALER. HMA NOTIFIED BUT DETERMINED NOT TO TAKE ANY ACTION OTHER THAN ITS INQUIRY TO ITS DEALER.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2008 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 15 MPH GOING AROUND A BEND, THE STEERING ABILITY SEIZED. THE CONTACT CRASHED INTO A PARKED VEHICLE, ROLLED BACK, AND STRUCK ANOTHER PARKED VEHICLE. THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY AND THE CONTACT'S HEAD STRUCK THE WINDSHIELD. THE BRAKES ALSO FAILED TO RESPOND. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE FOLLOWING DAY, THE CONTACT WENT TO THE HOSPITAL DUE TO A SEVERE HEADACHE AND FEVER. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN IMPOUND LOT BY THE POLICE, TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, AND THEN TOWED TO THE CONTACT'S RESIDENCE. AFTER THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED, THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED BY A THIRD PARTY INVESTIGATOR TO THEIR FACILITIES. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 145,000. I WAS MERGING ONTO I-275 E FROM I-471 AND AS I WAS PRESSING MY FOOT DOWN ONTO THE GAS PEDAL, THE CAR STARTED SPEEDING UP THEN CONTINUED TO SPEED UP WHEN I REMOVED MY FOOT FROM THE GAS PEDAL. THE ENGINE LOCKED AT 65 MPH. I TRIED TO APPLY THE BRAKES, BUT THEY WERE LOCKED AND WOULDN'T WORK. I PUT THE CAR IN 2ND GEAR WHILE I STILL HAD MY FEET THE BRAKE. THAT DID NOT SLOW THE CAR. I THEN SHIFTED THE GEAR INTO 1ST GEAR WHILE KEEPING MY FEET ON THE BRAKE. I TOOK BOTH FEET OFF THE BRAKE THEN BACK ON THE BRAKE. THE CAR SHIFTED INTO 1ST GEAR AND STARTED TO SLOW DOWN WHILE MAKING THE HIGH ENGINE NOISE. THE CAR SLOWED DOWN AFTER THE CAR SHIFTED INTO 1ST GEAR.

I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THE DEALER, WHO TOLD ME MY CAR WAS MANUFACTURED ONE MONTH EARLIER THAN THE CURRENT RECALL #127 AND I WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIR AND TOW. DID HAVE THE BRAKE LIGHT SENSOR REPLACED - ONCE DUE TO RECALL, AND AGAIN WHEN THE ONE PROVIDED BY THE RECALL FAILED, CAUSING THE BRAKE LIGHTS TO STAY ON, WHICH IN TURN DRAINED MY BATTERY - HAD TO REPLACE THE BATTERY AS A RESULT AS WELL AT MY OWN EXPENSE. *TR

THIS PAST SATURDAY, MAY 10, 2014 I WAS DRIVING MY FOUR YEAR OLD DAUGHTER HOME FROM SOCCER CLASS AND ALL OF A SUDDEN MY STEERING WENT OUT. WE TOOK THE CAR TO OUR LOCAL MECHANIC TO SEE IF IT WAS A SIMPLE THING LIKE A FLUID CHANGE. HE INFORMS US THAT THE STEERING IS COMPUTERIZED, THAT THERE IS A SERVICE BULLETIN ABOUT THE POWER STEERING IN OUR CAR AND WE SHOULD TAKE IT TO OUR DEALER AND IT SHOULDN'T COST ANYTHING TO REPROGRAM. *TR
ENTERING A CROWDED PARKING LOT IN THE CITY OF CHICAGO, I SLOWED DOWN TO APPROX. 2 MPH (ALMOST IDLE SPEED) AS I APPROACHED THE TICKET DISPENSER WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE CAR ACCELERATED OVER 6000 RPMS AND TOOK OFF. AS REFLEX, I SLAMMED THE BRAKES (SINCE THE ABS DOESN'T WORK WITHOUT POWER) BUT THE ACCELERATION KEPT INCREASING AND THE BRAKES WERE NOT INHIBITING MOVEMENT SO I THEN FORCED THE KEY OUT OF THE IGNITION AND PULLED THE EMERGENCY BREAK - ALL WITHIN A SECOND OR TWO. THE CAR STOPPED WITHIN INCHES OF HITTING A FEW OTHER CARS AND PEOPLE INSIDE THOSE CARS AFTER THE FORWARD MOMENTUM HAD BEEN OVERCOMPENSATED BY THE INITIAL BRAKE PUSH AND EMERGENCY BRAKING. THERE WAS A STRONG BURNT RUBBER AND OIL SMELL BUT IT WASN'T FROM THE TIRES. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AFTER TWO DRIVING CYCLES AND HAS REMAINED ON. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS SITUATION THAT NEEDS ATTENTION! I AM VERY EXPERIENCED DRIVER AND KNEW WHAT TO DO AND HOW TO DO IT BUT WAS STILL WITHIN INCHES OF SERIOUSLY HURTING OTHERS AND DESTROYING PROPERTY. I ALSO SUFFERED WHIPLASH ON MY NECK AND HIT THE STEERING COLUMN AS A RESULT OF THE SUDDEN STOP. AIR BAGS WERE NOT DEPLOYED. THERE ARE SEVERAL INCIDENTS THAT HAVE BEEN REPORTED IN THE PAST FEW MONTHS (MARCH 2013 - MAY 2013) BY DRIVERS IN SEVERAL STATES ON THIS SAME YEAR MODEL. I AM URGING NHTSA TO LOOK INTO THIS. THE GAS PEDAL GOT "STUCK" IN THE DOWN POSITION WHILE DRIVING, RESULTING IN A PROBLEM BEING ABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE. I WAS GOING APPROXIMATELY 45-50 MPH, PASSING/MERGING/ACCELERATING IN ORDER TO GET ONTO AN ONRAMP WHICH CURVED SLIGHTLY TO GO INTO ANOTHER MAIN HIGHWAY. WHEN I PRESSED ON THE BRAKES TO SLOW DOWN A BIT FOR THE RAMP, NOTHING HAPPENED. MY CAR CONTINUED TO GO AT THE SAME SPEED. I CONTINUED TO BRAKE, AND THE CAR WOULD NOT SLOW DOWN. I SLID MY FOOT OVER THE GAS PEDAL AND COULD TELL IT WAS STILL COMPLETELY "DOWN" AND MAKING THE CAR ACCELERATE AT FULL CAPACITY. I THEN GLANCED DOWN TO CONFIRM THAT THE PEDAL WAS STUCK IN THE DOWNWARD POSITION. THERE WAS NOTHING UNDER THE PEDAL, THE FLOOR MAT WAS NOT STUCK UNDERNEATH, NOR WAS IT ANYWHERE NEAR WHERE THE PEDAL WAS PRESSED DOWN. I CLICKED MY HAZARDS ON DURING THE PROCESS BECAUSE SINCE IT WAS AN ONRAMP, THERE WAS NOWHERE TO PULL OVER. AS I CONTINUOUSLY PRESSED ON THE BRAKES, THE CAR ONLY SLOWED DOWN APPROXIMATELY 3-5 MPH TOTAL, BECAUSE THE GAS PEDAL WAS STUCK ALL THE WAY DOWN, THEREFORE THE BRAKES WERE TRYING TO WORK AGAINST THE FULL POWER OF THE ACCELERATION. ONCE THE PASSENGER REALIZED WHAT WAS HAPPENING, HE HELPED BY PUTTING THE CAR IN NEUTRAL. THIS HELPED SLOW THE CAR, AND I THEN PULLED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. THE CAR CAME TO A STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF A MAIN HIGHWAY ONRAMP. THE CARS BEHIND ME WERE ABLE TO REACT QUICK ENOUGH TO GO AROUND AND NOT HIT THE CAR. I TRIED TO REPLICATE THE PROBLEM IN ORDER TO HELP DIAGNOSE THIS ISSUE AND HAVE MORE INFORMATION TO TELL HYUNDAI. ONCE ON A STRAIGHTAWAY WITHOUT OTHER CARS NEARBY, I PRESSED THE GAS PEDAL ALL THE WAY DOWN, AND SURE ENOUGH I WAS ABLE TO RECREATE THE ISSUE AND THE PEDAL GOT STUCK AGAIN. UPON TRYING TO RECREATE IT A 3RD TIME, IT DID NOT GET STUCK AND SEEMED TO BE WORKING PROPERLY. BUT IT DID GET STUCK 2 OUT OF THE 3 TIMES. IT WAS TERRIFYING TO NOT BE ABLE TO STOP. *TR
