NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2023 Hyundai Elantra. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
I purchased the vehicle February 6-23 and in April of 2023 my engine light keeps coming on saying low engine oil. I called the Tampa Hyundai dealership and they told me to ignore it I have down 2 service on this vehicle and issue is not fixed on the second service the same day I let the parking lot the issue started again. I bring the car back and they stated it was fix. Car was serviced 01/06/24 and recheck 01/09/24 and today is 01/12/24 and the issue is happing again. So I need help to understand this car issue
My headlights severely fog up during night driving or during rain, damp weather, or after any contact with water. This is an extremely common problem with 2021-2023 Hyundai Elantra (all trim levels) and causes extreme low visibility at night. Another issue is the horn which is also extremely common on 2021-2023 Hyundai Elantra (all trim levels) and mine has gone out completely twice and been replaced twice. My headlights have been inspected with the issue replicated and was told that it will not require any work because it’s “normal to have fog inside headlights” and no warranty work will be done to fix this safety issue
The contact owns a 2023 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated while driving 70 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power and stalled. During the failure the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the cause of the failure was due to faulty motor mount bushings. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 290.
The horn constantly fails and needs to be replaced. This is not only an issue with the Elantra, as I've seen it as a common issue among a range of Hyundai vehicles. Even my local dealership has many horns on hand, as it is so common for them to be replaced, as they stated. I've gone through 2 horns in less than a year. This is complete negligence on Hyundai's part, as the horn is a critical safety feature of any highway vehicle. They replace it knowing it's going to fail, completely disregarding the safety of both the operator and nearby car and foot traffic.
On Saturday December 16th my vehicle was parked as I was shopping. When I returned to the vehicle and started it, lights began to light up on the dashboard. They included the rear collision, front collision, airbag, parking brake, battery, tires, blind spot, and others. I called Hyundai and they said that they did not receive any communication from the vehicle stating that there was a problem. The front and rear cameras stopped working and I could no longer tell if my turning signals were operational as I didn't hear the normal clicking sound. It was difficult to turn as the steering wheel was tight. When I first went to the dealership, they refused to take a look at the problem. After filing a complaint with Hyundai, I was finally able to take the vehicle in on yesterday. They also are confused because the initial test showed that there was no problem. They now have the vehicle and are trying to find the cause. This is very concerning because in addition to basically driving blind, according to the manufacturer book, continuing to drive with specific light on could cause engine problems. I also was no longer aware of the speed that the vehicle was traveling nor how much going. The dealership says that it will be several days before they can get to the cause. There was no warning prior to all of the lights coming on and the vehicle has not been involved in any accidents.
Horn stopped working
My vehicle was involved in a auto accident. A chain reaction of multiple cars was hit I was rear ended by a Subaru Outback and was push into a box commercial truck my vehicle was deemed total and I sustain serious injuries my front in was smash in and no airbags deployed I contacted National consumer affairs my case number [XXX]. My case manger Elijah was very unprofessional and did not help and suggested I have an attorney reach out. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The car was involved in an accident. It was going 5-10 mph and hit a light post. There was minor body damage and about 10-15 seconds after initial impact the airbags deployed and cracked my windshield. The car was considered a total loss.
I have contacted the dealer. I am almost ready to get a lawyer. This is the 4th lemon I’ve been sold. Seat belt is installed wrong. Software updates are available and screaming at me but the dealership Will not call Me back. Two days now. Hyundai finance has treated me Disrespectfully. I have error messages when I enter the car. The hood looks aftermarket and about to pop up. The NHtsa website says this car has recalls but not mine?? What ?? It smells like something is burning from the console. The brake collision is calibrated off. I would have a wreck. It’s not safe. Period.
On two occasion vehicle abruptly shuts down leaving me with no control of vehicle. 1st incident , i was turning corner when car made a loud screeching noise and completely shut down ,i had no control over breaks or steering. Car sat for several hours before i could start it up, i did attempt to drive it down the street. I called to have vehicle looked at by dealership. They were unable to duplicate what happened . I received car back drove it for 2 weeks and then same thing happened, this time I was on a busy road when it shut down making loud screeching noise . I let vehicle roll while i struggled to pull over . I had no control over vehicle something is triggering vehicle to shut down . I am very concerned this will continue happening and it could result in a serious injury or fatality . Dealership as of today has no resolution to this problem , they still have my vehicle in their shop .
on my new car my backup camera has gone out in less than 7000 miles, and from what i have seen is a known defect that the Hyundai line of vehicles have and i want to make it more know of the defunct camera they are selling.
My vehicle usually would turn on the warning light stating that the engine oil level is low when I accelerate. The last time I had an oil change, it would turn on when I accelerate my vehicle to merge on the highway. I have had my engine oil level sensor changed out in my vehicle by a Hyundai tech. Immediately after my sensor was changed and I merged on to the nearest highway, it went on again when I increased speed. My vehicle has been inspected by a Hyundai dealer but it could not be fixed. This does not happen when you are at a consistent speed but rather when the car needs to accelerate.
When I try to accelerate its like it isn't getting gas or there's something preventing it from going. Once it stops struggling it takes off all at once. When it struggles you can feel the vehicle hesitate. It has less Than 5000 miles on it. There shouldn't be a single problem with jt n⁵.
The contact owns a 2023 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated while driving 60 MPH, the middle console became extremely hot, and the contact was unable to touch the console or the contents for fear of being burned. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who determined that heat from the exhaust was permeating into the interior of the vehicle. The contact was informed that a heatshield sleeve needed to be added to the exhaust. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 8,000.
My 2023 Hyundai Elantra vehicle displays a low oil pressure message when accelerating. Is this related to the recent recall for the electric oil pump assembly that may overheat and increase the risk of a fire?
On July 28th I had an accident and hurt myself because seatbelt did not work
The contact owns a 2023 Hyundai Elantra. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V526000 (Power Train) however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.
3 lanes going down to 2 (leftmost closed). I move over to far right lane out of middle lane. No cars ahead of me in right lane. some cars in left lane. In lane for about 100 yards when.... Emergency collision warning appears and warning is made with sound and car pumps to brakes. Nobody was in my lane within 40 yards. Nobody moving into my lane. I have had it slow down and give collision warning when a car moves to right turn lane from right lane and I pass that car. But this time the alert went off and brakes were automatically strongly applied as if I was about to plow into another car without any obvious threat. Dealer checked alerts and no obvious system failures or codes appeared. Turned off automatic braking for now (and as a safety concern, it resets to the default safety braking each time In restart the car). 8:41 AM 7/18/2023
On [XXX], I was driving to a hair appointment and was getting over to the far right lane. Traffic was stop and go and as I merged into the far right lane, the car flashed an “engine off” red light warning and had the words “put in N.” I quickly realized that the car had died on me. I tried to press on the gas to get over to the emergency lane, but the car would not accelerate. I tried to push the button to restart it, and it would not restart. I then tried to put it in neutral as I thought that’s what the N letter meant and still nothing happened. With the car dead, I steered the car into the emergency lane with my hazard lights on. I then pressed on the brakes, tried to put in neutral and finally put the car in park (I believe. I don’t really remember the order of events because I was panicking). I then pushed the button to start the car and it started up. I then drove in the slow lane the rest of the way until I got to my appointment, as I was worried the car would die out on me again on the fast lane and be killed. Our car has been at Stockton Hyundai since [XXX], and we still don’t have my car back. The car is in my husband’s name, [XXX]. They are claiming they can’t find anything wrong with it. There is a case number with corporate, but yet I can’t reach anybody there. I’ve talked to Tracy Hyundai, Stockton Hyundai, Corporate Hyundai, and still no car. What can I do to resolve this issue? We are paying on a car that is not in our possession. I leave messages at Stockton Hyundai, and nobody calls me back. I called Lauren at Corporate Hyundai and don’t have a callback from her. I called today and the recording says that she’s not available and then I’ll get transferred to a different agent and the phone just rings. So I called the main number at Corporate Hyundai again and they tell me they can’t give me a different agent. I have to call them again and again then, but still really no resolution and no car. The contact owns a 2023 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that on several occasions while driving in the rain, the vehicle experienced severe hydroplaning while driving slowly over standing water. The contact lost control of the vehicle and nearly caused a crash. The vehicle was not yet taken to the dealer to be inspected or diagnosed. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 7,000.
The contact owns a 2023 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that the reflection from the dashboard caused a glare on the front windshield, obstructing her vision while driving. The contact called the local dealer, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted but no additional assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 3.
As I started driving my Hyundai Elantra, the digital dash and infotainment screen went black and then I got a message that my Hyundai BlueLink Profile along with its settings had been reset. I did not initiate this reset. I never heard anything from the manufacturer about this incident either. This momentarily caused me to lose sight of my speedometer and it reset all my ADAS settings such as following distances, warnings vs active assists, etc.
The contact owns a 2023 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated while driving 65 MPH, the rear cross track warning light was illuminated, and applied the brakes independently, causing the vehicle to independently steer to the right. The contact was able to regain control of the vehicle and continued driving. The contact stated he had experienced the failure a total of 5 times. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer who was unable to duplicate the failure. The contact stated he continued to experience the failure. The vehicle was taken back to the local dealer and to diagnose the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 7,000.
Had a crack on the windshield which was getting larger quickly. There was no damage caused by debris that I was aware of. Spoke to multiple dealerships and they refused to fix or even check if it was a defect. Went through insurance to get the windshield replaced but Safelite said that it was not a damage but most definitely a defective windshield.
I purchased a car on December 24th 2022 and from the day I left off the lot there were electrical signals showing that the car was malfunctioning. I told [XXX] (the dealer) what was taking place and the dealership never called me or tried to assist with any problems. For months the signals were coming on and off and my last straw was when my windshield wipers stopped working in the middle of a rain storm after I had just made an in person complaint for the 3rd time about my electrical issues on the car while at the dealership on May 13th 2023. I had just been told there was nothing they could do and I called them upon leaving to tell them I could not see while driving because my wipers were not working. They told me to just go home. [XXX] (New car sales manager) hung up on me 5/17/2023 after telling me I am making assumptions when I was shown proof that the car had issues by the service department when they finally serviced my car about my complaints on 5/16/2023. He told me he was never made aware when I emailed the service manager all of my proof the day prior. I called 5 times before I could actually reach [XXX] who would have been [XXX] supervisor. They even hung up on me prior to speaking to him. I am completely disgusted & I do not feel safe in this car. [XXX] did not want to give me anything in writing that he was saying over the phone. He would not even send me an email. I don't feel valued I feel used. At this point I don't even know or have faith in this company. I am so hurt and as I told him if I were to die because of the issues then maybe he would have took accountability instead of blaming service or anyone else. I even contacted Hyundai corporate and they said there is nothing they can do because the dealership is a family run private Hyundai dealership. I have proof of all records and I will be attaching it. Attached shows different mileage dates, of incidents, official text and emails that were unanswered. 1. Emergency Braking System - came on screen in car - and car took control and began to break 2. I was terrified on two separate occasions because I had no control over my car.... The first situation was when I was on the highway in the slow lane driving approximately 65-70 mph with no one in front of me - suddenly as the car behind me exited off the highway and merged into the off-ramp - my car suddenly began to brake on its own - for absolutely no reason - and then a few seconds later I had control of my car again. The second situation was when I was on a city street in the fast lane (a 4 lane road (2 lanes on each side of the street with a middle verge for people to turn left). I was going approximately 45 mph with no one in front me but there was a car to the right of me (in the slow lane). As I came up to a truck that was stopped in the middle verge lane (waiting to turn left) - my car once again suddenly began to brake - for absolutely no reason - and then a few seconds later I had control of my car again. 3. I took it to the dealership - they informed me there is nothing wrong with my car because they could not duplicate the problem. 4. I do not believe it has been inspected by the manufacturer - I told the dealership they can keep my car for as long as they need to and find out what is going on because the car is dangerous since it is taking on a life of its own. I am not pleased after reading through everything on the internet that apparently this is not an uncommon complaint, yet, nowhere have I seen any resolution to this complaint, so I am now furious that the dealership seems to think it is ok to tell me that there is nothing wrong with my car. 5. No there was no warning lamps prior to the car taking a life of its own

225/45/17 - Tire had a blowout. The tire had multiple bulges on the side wall. The tire was flat and would not hold air.
The contact owns a 2023 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that shortly after purchasing the vehicle, it was discovered that the backup camera display screen image was flickering and distorted, creating a visibility hazard for the driver while reversing. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the display unit was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was not yet notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 50.
The right back and front windows on this car does not work. There are times when all 4 windows do not work and all 4 doors will lock up and cannot be open from inside nor outside. This is a huge safety hazard. I took the car back to the dealer a total of 6 times. They worked on the car 4 of those six times trying to fix the issue which still exist. They finally told me there is nothing more they can do at this point. I said ok then, so it's clear the car is a lemon, so I would like a manufacturers buy back. They have ignored me. This has been going on since March 5th of this year. I took the car to another dealer for a second opinion and was advised the car is a lemon so I should contact corporate. I was provided the contact information for corporate and so I called and made a complaint. Corporate advised they would have reached back out on June 14th of this year, and to this day I have hear nothing back. I am extremely terrified of driving this car because, what is there is a fire or something, and I can't get out of the car? This car is a real safety issue and all I have gotten from the dealer is disrespect over and over and over. At one point I went back to them letting know again I do not want the car and u was asked by one of their sales person if this is about money. How insensitive. I am paying for a car that I can't even drive. I have parked this car since June 25th of this year and have to now be relying on uber or begging persons a ride. Most time it's very inconvenient. I have tried to speak with the dealer numerous amount of times, but to no avail. I don't know what else to do. Please advise accordingly. Anticipating your favorable response.
I was driving on the turnpike and the truck in front of me was carrying material that caused my windshield to be soiled. I tried to clean but water did not come out of windshield wiper. I had to exit and clean manually. I was surprised no water because the car has only 2,700 miles and is 5 months old. I tried to fill with water but water dripped out. Next day I took to Hyundai dealer who told me rodents ate the hose. They charged me $252.43 to replace hose. I read online many claims against Hyundai for using soy based products in the engine components that attract rodents. I learned that two of my friends who own Hyundai's had similar problems with rodents eating wires and hoses. If it was at night when my windshield was compromised I could have had an accident. Hyundai has turned a defect into a moneymaker. Shame on them! Please help.
The contact owns a 2023 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that the vehicle was equipped with an auto light feature that allowed the headlights to turn on at night while the dash light would become dim. However, the contact stated that the headlights had been turning on during daytime, which was impairing his vision of the road. Additionally, the instrument panel lights were becoming dim, preventing the contact to monitor the instrument cluster. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who gathered the vehicle data and sent a report to the manufacturer. The manufacturer then informed the contact that the vehicle was operating as designed. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage 500.
1. False Emergency braking when car from back side passing. Today I was driving in the left lane (lane 1) at ~43MPH. There was no vehicle in front of me and I saw a vehicle applying emergency brakes with a message pop up. At the same time there was a small truck passing me from behind in lane 2 at a higher speed than me. Looks like the system is falsely detecting there is a crash from back and applying brakes.
