TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2013 JEEP COMPASS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THEIR VEHICLE DECELERATED AND BEGAN TO SMOKE. THE CONTACT THEN PULLED OVER AND PLACED THE VEHICLE IN PARK. THE HOOD WAS OPENED AND AND EXCESSIVE FLAMES WERE VISIBLE. THE FIRE GREW LARGER FROM OUT OF THE HOOD. THE CONTACT'S FRIEND CAME OUT SIDE AND EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE WITH THEIR OWN FIRE EXTINGUISHER. A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT MADE. THE CONTACT CALLED BAXTER CHRYSLER JEEP DODGE (17950 BURT ST SUITE 200, OMAHA, NE 68118 (402) 800-1230). THE VEHICLE WAS DIAGNOSED. THE MECHANICS STATED THAT THE FUEL LINE FAILED. MECHANICS SET UP AN APPOINTMENT FOR TOMORROW. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 74,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
FUEL EMISSIONS SYSTEM. REPEATED CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WARNING INDICATIONS HAVE BEEN SEEN IN THIS VEHICLE OVER THE PAST YEAR. REPEATED TRIPS TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE RESULTED IN COMPONENTS BEING REPLACED ERRONEOUSLY. MOST RECENT REPLACEMENT REQUIRED ENTIRE REPLACEMENT OF FUEL TANK AND HOSES DUE TO EXCESSIVE CORROSION AND DEFORMATION OF THE TANK. THE VEHICLE HAS APPROXIMATELY 65,000 MILES OF OPERATION. THIS REPEATED ISSUE HAS COST SEVERAL HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS IN UNNECESSARY REPAIRS, LOST TIME FROM WORK, AND EXTREME CONCERN OVER THE SAFETY OF THE VEHICLE'S FUEL SYSTEM AND EMISSIONS MONITORING COMPONENTS. DEGREE OF CORROSION AND LEVEL OF FAILURE ON SEALS AS REPORTED BY SERVICE TECHNICIAN SEEMS VERY HAZARDOUS FOR THE AGE AND USE HISTORY OF VEHICLE.

THE CONTACT STATED AFTER RECEIVING NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN I.D. 13V120000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE), THE CONTACT CALLED THE DEALER TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT. THE DEALER STATED THAT THEY DID NOT HAVE THE PART NEEDED TO PERFORM THE RECALL REPAIR. THE CONTACT CALLED THE DEALER AGAIN, MONTHS LATER AND WAS ADVISED THAT ALTHOUGH THEY DID HAVE THE PART AVAILABLE, THEY DID NOT HAVE THE ACCOMPANYING TOOL NEEDED TO PERFORM THE REPAIR.
