I WAS IN A DRIVEWAY AND PUT THE CAR IN REVERSE AND ACCELERATED SINCE IT WAS A VERY SLIGHT INCLINE WHEN THE CAR AUTOMATICALLY WENT INTO AUTO PARK. THIS HAPPENED 4 TIMES. I SHUT THE CAR OFF, RESTARTED. THE SHIFTER WORKED. I DROVE TO THE DEALER, THEY LOOKED AT IT AND SAID NOTHING IS WRONG. SEEMS LIKE A SAFETY ISSUE TO ME
2015 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE SAGETY RECAL # S55/NHTSA 16V-529 TRANSAXLE WIRE HARNESS. I RECEIVED A SAFETY RECALL NOTICE WITH INSTRUCTIONS TO CALL MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP TO ARRANGE SERVICE. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD BY THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT THAT THE NECESSARY PARTS REQUIRED TO DO THE REPAIR WAS NOT MADE AVAILABLE TO ANY DEALERSHIP YET. I WAS TOLD BY THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT TO WAIT ANOTHER MONTH OR TWO FOR THE SECOND RECALL NOTICE TO ARRIVE BY MAIL TO CALL AND MAKE THE APPOINTMENT. I ASKED IF, IN THE MEANTIME, I WAS TO HOPE AND PRAY THAT AN ACCIDENT IS NOT CAUSED BY THIS RECALL ITEM IN THE INTERIM, AND THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT REPLIED , "YES." I THEN CALL THE FCA RECALL ASSISTANCE CENTER AT FCA AND WAS TOLD THE SAME THING. UNACCEPTABLE PRACTICES GIVEN THE FACT THAT THE RECALL NOTICE CLEARLY STATES THAT, " ...THE SYSTEM DEFAULTS THE TRANSAXLE TO NEUTRAL AND THE CUSTOMER EXPERIENCES A LOSS OF MOTIVE POWER. ....THE LOSS OF MOTIVE POWER COULD CAUSE A CRASH WITHOUT WARNING."
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2015 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE. AFTER PRESSING THE PUSH BUTTON TO DEPOWER THE VEHICLE, THE BUTTON BECAME DETACHED FROM THE DASHBOARD. DUE TO THE FAILURE, THE VEHICLE COULD NOT BE TURNED OFF. THE FAILURE OCCURRED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING, BUT THE RESULTS WERE NOT DISCLOSED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 26,000.

A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED AND THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A DEALER, BUT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS SERVICED PER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 16V240000 (POWER TRAIN), BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 13,200. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
ENGINE STALL WHILE IN MOTION ON INTERSTATE HIGHWAY ENTRANCE RAMP. "SERVICE ELECTRONIC BRAKE SYSTEM" MALFUNCTION MESSAGE APPEARED. NO PRIOR INDICATION OF TROUBLE. TAKEN TO DEALER FOR WARRANTY REPAIR. AS OF 9/26/16 STILL AWAITING A POWER CONTROL MODULE PART (SIMILAR TO, IF NOT IDENTICAL TO, THE TIPM-7 PART THAT HAS CAUSED ISSUES IN THE PAST) THAT IS ON NATIONAL BACKORDER, WHICH IS THE 14TH DAY OUT OF SERVICE. IN ADDITION TO CONTROL MODUCLE, ELECTRICAL RELAY TO FUEL PUMP AND THE FUEL PUMP ITSELF WILL REQUIRE REPLACEMENT.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2015 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE. WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. ALL OF THE LIGHTS ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL FLICKERED ON AND OFF. THE VEHICLE STALLED ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION WITHIN THE SAME DAY. IN ADDITION, THE VEHICLE FAILED TO SHIFT INTO GEAR PROPERLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A JEEP DEALER TO BE REPAIRED. IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE BCM MODULE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 12,000.

I PURCHASED 2015 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE ALTITUDE WITH THE STANDARD HEADLIGHTS LAST YEAR. THESE HEADLIGHTS ARE VERY DIM AND SHOULD BE CONSIDERED DANGEROUS. THEY MIGHT BE FINE IN A CITY WITH STREET LIGHTS BUT ON COUNTRY ROADS THE LOW BEAMS BARELY LIGHT THE ROAD AND THE SPILL INTO THE DITCHES DO NOTHING BUT LIGHT THE EDGES. THE HIGH BEAMS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED THE LOW BEAMS IF THEY WEREN'T POINTED SO HIGH. THE DEALERSHIP I PURCHASED IT FROM WON'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT THE BRIGHTNESS BECAUSE THAT IS HOW THEY ARE FROM THE FACTORY, THEY DID SAY THEY WOULD ADJUST THEM IF I THOUGHT THEY WEREN'T POINTED CORRECTLY. MY PARENTS HAVE A 2016 JEEP CHEROKEE AND HAVE THE SAME ISSUE. MY MOTHER IF SHE HAD A CHOICE, WOULD REFUSE TO DRIVE IT AT DUSK OR LATER. THE WEAK HEADLIGHTS ARE A HUGE CONCERN THIS TIME OF THE YEAR BECAUSE DEER ARE A VERY REAL HAZARD IN MY AREA. I HAVE ATTACHED AN IMAGE OF THE LOW BEAMS WHILE VEHICLE WAS PARKED. THE TREE LINE IS ABOUT 10 YARDS AWAY. THE PICTURE DOESN'T DO JUSTICE TO HOW CRAPPY THESE LIGHTS ARE WHEN DRIVING. AT THIS POINT IN TIME I'M FORCED TO PURCHASE AFTERMARKET HEADLIGHTS FOR A NEW VEHICLE TO RECTIFY AN ISSUE THAT IS PUTTING MY FAMILY IN DANGER. BY DOING SO MAY VOID WARRANTY REPAIRS. AFTER SHUTTING THE ENGINE OFF AND RESTARTING IT 3 TIMES IT SHIFTED INTO GEAR. ON ANOTHER OCCASION THE WHILE TRAVELING DOWN A HILL AT 65MPH, ON CRUISE CONTROL, THE ENGINE WENT FROM 2000RPM TO 5000RPM. THE ODOMETER WENT FROM 65MPH TO 75 MPH. THE VEHICLE WAS SLOWING DOWN WHILE THE ENGINE WAS LOUD AND RUNNING AT A HIGH RPM. THE ONLY WAY TO STOP IT WAS TO HIT THE BRAKE OR SHIFT TO NEUTRAL. ALSO, WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A STOP THE TRANSMISSION WOULD MAKE A NOISE AND BUMP AS IF REAR-ENDED. UPDATED 08/03/2017*JS CONSUMER STATED AFTER STARTING VEHICLE THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT LEAVE NEUTRAL. ENGINE WAS ROARING VERY LOULDLY UNTIL CONSUMER STEPPED ON THE BRAKES. THIS HAPPENED 3 TIMES. MY WIFE CAME HOME FROM STORE AND PUT HER IN PARK , SAT IN THE CAR WHILE MAKING A OIL CHANGE APPOINTMENT . EXITED CAR CAME IN THE CAR FOR 5 MINUTES , MY DAUGHTER HAD WENT OUTSIDE 6 MINUTES LATER AND OPENED HER OWN CAR DOOR MY WIFE'S CAR HAD BEGAN TO ROLL CRUSHING HER CAR DOOR BACKWARDS . MY DAUGHTER HAD TO CRAWL THROUGH HER OWN CAR TO GET INTO THE GRAND CHEROKEE TO RE PUT IT IN PARK , CAUSING 1000S IN DAMAGE.
WHILE DRIVING AT A SPEED OF 15 MPH ON A CITY STREET THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE CONTROL ARM FRACTURED, BROKE LOOSE, RIPPED APART THE WHEEL WELL AND CAUSED THE CAR TO PULL TO THE RIGHT AND BRUSH AGAINST A PARKED CAR CAUSING MINOR PAINT DAMAGE ON THE FRONT BUMPER.
RECEIVED A RECALL FOR THE TRANSMISSION ON MY GRAND CHEROKEE TOOK IT TO THE DEALER FOR RECALL BUT WORK WAS NOT DONE CALLED DEALER AND JEEP CHYSLER TO COMPLAIN BUT ALL I GET IS A RUN AROUND I WILL NOT BRING IT BACK TO HERB CHAMBERS IN DANVERS MA THEY DON'T CARE IF THE CAR IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE THEY GOT YOU TO BUY THIS GARBAGE THEY GOT THERE MONEY WAS TOLD TO TAKE IT SOME WHERE ELSE THEY WOULD NO TAKE A LOOK AT THE CAR AND I CANT BRING IT BACK ANYWHERE ELSE TILL A REGIONAL MGT APPROVES IT. NHTSA ID NUMBER: 10894308 THIS SAME ISSUE HAPPENED TO OUR 2015 GRAND CHEROKEE AFTER THE SOFTWARE SAFETY RECALL OF THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL LEVER. PROCEEDING IN DRIVE ON A HIGHWAY, THE LEVER WAS GENTLY BRUSHED - NOT HIT HARD - AND THE TRANSMISSION WENT INTO NEUTRAL. THE THUMB BUTTON WAS NOT DEPRESSED. THIS IS A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY ISSUE, AND WE DID NOT EXPERIENCE IT PRIOR TO THE SOFTWARE UPDATE. IT HAS NOW BEEN REPLICATED SEVERAL TIMES, AND A VIDEO CAN BE PROVIDED IF NECESSARY.
ONCE I HAD COMPLETED PARKING THE VEHICLE IN A PARKING LOT IN FRONT OF A SHOPPING CENTER PROPERLY SHIFTING THE GEAR INTO THE PARK POSITION. MY BOYFRIEND BEGAN TO EXIT THE PASSENGER SIDE TO HELP OUR TWO YEAR OLD SON FROM HIS CAR SEAT AS I HAD BEGAN TO RELEASE MY FOOT FROM THE BREAK PEDAL. IT WAS AT THAT MOMENT THAT THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO ROLL FORWARD I QUICKLY PLACED MY FOOT BACK ONTO THE BREAK PEDAL STOPPING THE VEHICLE WHICH STILL INDICATED IT WAS IN PARK. WITH MY FOOT REMAINING ON THE BREAK PEDAL I SHIFTED THE GEAR INTO DRIVE AND INTO PARK, AGAIN. TO ENSURE THE VEHICLE WAS NOW PARKED. THE VEHICLE DID NOT MOVE AND I PLACED THE EMERGENCY PARKING BREAK ON AND HAVE CONTINUED TO DO SO SINCE THE INCIDENT. AT NO POINT IN TIME DURING THE INCIDENT DID THE VEHICLE ALERT ME IN ANY WAY THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT IN THE PROPER GEAR POSITION. IT IN FACT READ THAT IT WAS IN THE CORRECT GEAR POSITION OF PARK.
I HAD BEEN DRIVING THIS VEHICLE FOR SEVERAL DAYS , I NOTICE WHEN I BRAKE . IT WOULD NOT STOP . I NOTICE THIS 6 DIFFERENT TIMES . MY DAUGHTER CAME HONE ONE MORNING AND SAID TO ME . VEHICLE WAS BEING PARKED IN MY GARAGE MOVING SLOWLY FORWARD WITH NO APPLICATION OF THROTTLE AND BEGAN TO SUDDENLY ACCELERATE. STANDING ON THE BRAKE WOULD NOT FULLY HOLD IT AND IT WENT INTO REAR WALL .
JEEP WENT IN FOR SERVICE TO CORRECT THE RECALLED TRANSMISSION ELECTRONIC SHIFT LEVER ON SATURDAY, AUG. 6TH AT 12:30PM. PICKED UP CAR FROM FARRISH JEEP AT 5PM SAME DAY. AT 8PM ON THE SAME DAY, THE CAR WOULD NOT GO OUT OF PARK, THOUGH THE SHIFT LEVER WAS IN DRIVE WHILE IN MY DRIVEWAY. THE DASHBOARD DISPLAYED PARK, WHILE SHIFTER WAS IN DRIVE. EXACT THING HAPPENED WITH 2010 JEEP WRANGLER IN MAY, 2015 AND FARRISH CLAIMED TO FIX IT 3 TIMES IN 36 HOURS. IT HAD TO BE TOWED 3 TIMES BY THE DEALER, BECAUSE THE CAR ROLLED AWAY FROM MY TEENAGE DRIVER THE SAME DAY WE GOT IT BACK FROM FARRISH(IN A NEIGHBORHOOD) AFTER THEY CLAIMED TO HAVE FIXED IT. THIS HAPPENED 3 TIMES IN 36 HOURS.
PURCHASED JEEP SEPT. 2015. RECEIVED NOTICE OF RECALL. TOOK IN AUG.2016. NEVER ANY PROBLEM UNTIL THEY UPDATED IT. SINCE THEN,IT HAS WENT INTO PARK WHEN TRYING TO BACK UP, WHEN IN N, REFUSES TO GO INTO PARK. AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS, FINALLY DOES. VERY CONCERNED IT WILL DECIDE TO JUMP INTO PARK WHEN I'M ON INTERSTATE GOING 65 MPH. TOOK IT IN AGAIN AND THEY CKD IT OUT AND SAID NOTHING WRONG. I'M NOT CONVINCED, AT ALL. CALLED DEALER I LEASED IT FROM. HE SAID MAKE SURE YOU BRAKE FIRST BEFORE ENGAGING. WELL, I'VE BEEN DRIVING SINCE I WAS 16, HAVE NEVER JUST PUT INTO ANY GEAR BEFORE BRAKING. I RECEIVED THE SAFETY RECALL FOR THE ELECTRONIC SHIFT LEVER NOT GOING TO PARK. I SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT WITH BOB BAKER JEEP IN CARLSBAD, CA TO HAVE THE RECALL DONE. I WENT TO DROP IT OFF. THE JEEP DEALER REFUSED TO DO THE WORK. I WAS TOLD JEEP IS NO LONGER DOING THE RECALL.
I WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW THAT THE RECALL FIX ON THE 2015 JEEP CHEROKEE FOR THE TRANSMISSION PROBLEM (DIFFICULTY GETTING THE CAR INTO PARK, GOING INTO REVERSE INSTEAD) IS STILL OCCURRING AFTER THE 'RECALL REPAIR' BY CHRYSLER. I HAVE OWNED A 2015 JEEP CHEROKEE SUMMIT SINCE DECEMBER 2014. THERE IS A CHANGE TO THE SHIFTING MECHANISM WITH THE RECALL REPAIR, HOWEVER, PROBLEMS STILL EXIST IN GETTING THE CAR INTO PARK. I STILL HAVE TO BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL AND DOUBLE CHECK TO MAKE SURE THAT THE CAR IS IN PARK AND NOT REVERSE WHEN I ATTEMPT TO EXIT THE CAR. THE SHIFT TO PARK SHOULD BE EASY AND THE CASUAL DRIVER (RENTER/ BORROWER/ YOUNG ADULT DRIVER) OF THIS TYPE OF VEHICLE IS IN DANGER OF A LIFE THREATENING INCIDENCE IF THEY ARE NOT ADEQUATELY TRAINED ON HOW TO EFFECTIVELY PLACE THE CAR IN PARK. IT JUST DOES NOT OPERATE SAFELY AND REQUIRES TOO MUCH ATTENTION TO EXECUTE, WHAT SHOULD BE, A SIMPLE DRIVER FUNCTION. AFTER THE RECALL REPAIR, I AM STILL EXPERIENCING INCIDENCES WHERE THE CAR WILL ROLL IN REVERSE WHEN I THINK IT SHOULD BE IN PARK. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE ADDRESS THIS AGAIN WITH CHRYSLER AND REQUIRE THEM TO PROVIDE A PERMANENT FIX TO THIS SEVERE AND DANGEROUS ISSUE.
THE AUTONOMOUS BRAKING SYSTEM ON MY JEEP GRAND CHEROKEES CAME ON FOR NO REASON AT 70 MILES PER HOUR WITH AN EMPTY ROAD AHEAD OF ME. I WAS NEARLY HIT FROM THE REAR, VERY SCARY.

THE VEHICLE WENT INTO OFF ROAD MODE WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE STREET, THE HEADLIGHTS STARTED FLASHING WHILE STOPPED BEHIND ANOTHER DRIVING FOR NO REASON. THE DEALER WORKED ON ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS BEHIND THE MEDIA CENTER, AND REPLACED A WIRING HARNESS. THE PROBLEMS CONTINUED TO MULTIPLY AND THE VEHICLE HASN'T BEEN THE SAME, SINCE. THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED A SOFTWARE UPDATE, WOULD NOT BE AVAILABLE UNTIL SEPTEMBER. *JB

THE FORWARD COLLISION WARNING WITH BRAKE MITIGATION ENGAGES INTERMITTENTLY, OUT OF THE BLUE, WHEN THERE IS NO NEED. MEANING; I'LL BE DRIVING ALONG . . . NO CARS OR OBJECTS IN FRONT OF ME, AND ALL OF A SUDDEN THE SYSTEM SLAMS ON THE BRAKES, JERKS VERY ABRUPTLY, AUDIBLE BELLS GO OFF AND THE SCREEN ILLUMINATES BRAKE BRAKE BRAKE! THERE HAVE BEEN 3 INSTANCES IN WHICH MY FAMILY AND I HAVE NEARLY BEEN REAR-ENDED DUE TO THIS ERRATIC BEHAVIOR THAT THE VEHICLE IS DEMONSTRATING. TWO WEEKS AGO, THE JEEP DEALER COMPLETED THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION RECALL WHICH INSURES THE TRANSMISSION IS IN PARK WHEN A DRIVER DOOR IS OPENED. HOWEVER, THE PROBLEM OF KNOWING WHAT GEAR THE JEEP IS IN REMAINS.. SINCE THE RECALL WAS INSTALLED, THERE HAVE BEEN TWO INSTANCES WHERE I THOUGHT THE JEEP WAS PLACED IN ONE GEAR BUT ACTUALLY WAS IN A DIFFERENT GEAR. FCA ISSUES THE RECALL WITHOUT HAVING PARTS TO FIX AND AFTER A MONTH OF WAITING I CANNOT GET THE DEALERSHIP, DICK HUVAERE IN RICHMOND, MI TO GET ME IN TO FINISH THE REPAIR ON THE RECALL. IN ADDITION TO THE UNSAFE ELECTRONIC GEAR SHIFTER, WHICH HAS NO ACTUAL FIX, THIS CARE HAS HAD REPEATED PROBLEMS WITH STAGNATION IN SHIFTING GEARS AND IS VERY ROUGH AND UNPREDICTABLE IN ITS SHIFT PATTERN AND ENGINE RPM. WE HAD THIS CAR IN ONCE ALREADY FOR THIS ISSUE AND AFTER A "SOFTWARE" UPDATE THE SHIFTING PROBLEMS HAVE WORSENED. VERY UNHAPPY WITH THE SAFETY IMPLICATIONS OF THIS ENTIRE TRANSMISSION AND SHIFTING SYSTEM.

DROVE CAR TO SHOPPING CENTER NOTICED A OIL SMELL WHEN PARKING. WHEN I RETURNED TO CAR TO LEAVE SHOPPING CENTER I HAD EXTREME DIFFICULTY TURNING STEERING WHEEL. I LIVE VERY CLOSE FROM SHOPPING CENTER AND VERY CAREFULLY WITH EXTREME DIFFICULTY DROVE CAR HOME. I OPENED THE HOOD A NOTICED POWER STEERING FLUID ALL OVER THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THE DEALER. CAR HAS 13,000 MILES. I FEEL VERY LUCKY THAT THE OIL DIDN'T CAUSE A FIRE OR THAT THE STEERING LOSE OCCURED WHEN I WAS NOT MOVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY.

HAVE EXPERIENCED SITUATIONS WHERE IMPROPER GEAR WAS SELECTED, LEADING TO UNANTICIPATED VEHICLE MOVEMENT. VEHICLE HAS BEEN INADVERTENTLY IN REVERSE, WHEN THOUGHT TO BE IN PARK, BUTTON WAS PUSHED TO STOP ENGINE, BUT KEPT ON RUNNING; STARTED TO EXIT AND VEHICLE ALMOST CRASHED INTO GARAGE DOOR. INDICATOR LIGHTS ARE NOT ALWAYS VISIBLE DUE TO STEERING WHEEL, BLOCKING VIEW OF DASH, AND/OR BRIGHT AMBIENT LIGHT. PROBLEM OF GEAR SELECTION IS ESPECIALLY CRITICAL WHEN MANEUVERING A TRAVEL TRAILER, AS THIS VEHICLE IS OCCASIONALLY USED FOR TOWING, AND HITCHING AND/OR PARKING OF TRAILER IS A BACK AND FORTH PROCESS. HAVE RECALL NOTICE (NO. 16V-240), BUT SUPPOSEDLY THE FIX IS NOT YET AVAILABLE. NEWS REPORTS INDICATE THAT SOLUTION WILL BE TO ADD AUDIBLE WARNINGS? THAT DOESN'T FIX THE PROBLEM; BETTER BE LOUD AND DISTINCTIVE, LIKE "HEY STUPID, YOU'RE NOT IN PARK!". SOLUTION SHOULD BE TO RETURN TO A TRADITIONAL MECHANICAL SHIFTER WITH DEFINITE POSITIONS FOR EACH GEAR. CURRENT ARRANGEMENT IS TOO MUCH LIKE PUSH BUTTONS OR TOUCH SCREEN.
MY 2015 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE IS EQUIPPED WITH SENSORS THAT CAN ACTIVATE THE BRAKING IF THE CAR DETECTS A COLLISION. IT SEEMS AS THOUGH THESE SENSORS ARE TOO SENSITIVE AND CAUSE THE CAR TO SLAM ON THE BRAKES WHEN THERE IS NO NEED FOR IT. I HAVE EXPERIENCED MY CAR SLAMMING AUTOMATICALLY SLAMMING ON MY BRAKES IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD SEEMINGLY BECAUSE I WAS MAKING A LANE CHANGE AND THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME WAS NOT MOVING. LUCKY THERE WERE NO VEHICLES BEHIND ME OTHERWISE IT WOULD HAVE SURELY CAUSED A SEVERE ACCIDENT! THIS WAS ON A BUSY STREET IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY... VERY DANGEROUS!
THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION DOWNSHIFTS HARSHLY WITH A BANG. UP SHIFTS ARE ALSO HARSH AT TIMES. TRANSMISSION SOFTWARE HAS BEEN UPDATED TWICE BUT THE ISSUE CONTINUED. RECENTLY THE TRANSMISSION VALVE BODY WAS REPLACE AND THE ISSUE HAS GOTTEN MUCH WORSE. MY JEEP IS CURRENTLY BACK AT THE DEALERSHIP.
I BACKED UP TO A PARKING STALL AND SHIFTED TRANSMISSION IN WHAT I THOUGHT WAS PARK. BUT THE TRANSMISSION WAS STILL IN REVERSE. WHEN I WAS EXITING THE CAR, IT STARTED TO MOVE BACKWARDS. I HIT THE BRAKE PEDAL, BUT THE CAR HIT A POST. THERE WAS SOME DAMAGE TO THE REAR BUMPER.
WHILE DRIVING, THE GEAR SHIFT CONTROL MECHANISM WILL SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL WHEN INADVERTENTLY BUMPED. THIS HAS OCCURRED ON A FEW OCCASIONS WHILE I WAS REACHING ACROSS TO THE GLOVE COMPARTMENT, PASSENGER SEAT, RADIO, OR PHONE CHARGER CONSOLE AREA. ALL OF THESE AREAS ARE NEAR, OR IN LINE WITH, THE GEAR SHIFT CONTROL WHICH IS LOCATED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CAR BELOW THE ARM REST ON THE DRIVER'S RIGHT HAND SIDE. TWICE THIS HAS OCCURRED ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN I WAS REACHING FOR CHANGE FOR A TOLL. PER THE DESIGN (ACCORDING TO MY DEALER'S CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE), THE GEAR SHIFT BUTTON DOESN'T REQUIRE IT TO BE PUSHED IN WHEN SHIFTING FROM DRIVE TO NEUTRAL. SO, WHEN/IF I LIGHTLY BUMP IT (AS I HAVE WITHOUT REALIZING IT), IT WILL SIMPLY & QUIETLY SHIFT FROM DRIVE INTO NEUTRAL. IT IS A DESIGN FLAW THAT IS VERY DANGEROUS. THE BUTTON ON THE GEAR SHIFT LEVER SHOULD REQUIRE THE DRIVER TO PRESS IT FOR ANY SHIFT CHANGES. THE CUSTOMER SERVICE AGENT AT THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME ALL THE JEEP GEAR SHIFTS WERE DESIGNED THIS WAY. I ASKED HIM IF I SHOULD FILE A COMPLAINT WITH JEEP CHRYSLER AND HE TOLD ME IF I WANTED TO I COULD BUT ... THEN HE JUST SHRUGGED HIS SHOULDERS. SO, RATHER THAN TAKING THE CHANCE OF BEING IGNORED I FELT IT WAS IMPORTANT FILE A COMPLAINT WITH THE NHTSA BEFORE SOMEONE GETS INJURED OR KILLED.

THE "NOTCHES" THAT INDICATE THE GEAR SELECTION VIA TACTILE FEEDBACK TO THE DRIVER ARE VERY SUBTLE AND CAN BE EASILY MISINTERPRETED OR MISCOUNTED.

IN LESS THAN A YEAR FROM THE DATE OF PURCHASE, THE VEHICLE HAD MAJOR REPAIRS INCLUDING A COMPLETE ENGINE REPLACEMENT AND AN EXHAUST SYSTEM REPLACEMENT. BASED ON MULTIPLE SERVICE ISSUES WITH VEHICLES WITH THIS DIESEL ENGINE, MY LOCAL JEEP DEALERSHIP DOES NOT STOCK OR SELL THE GRAND CHEROKEE WITH THIS ENGINE ANYMORE.
