NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2006 Jeep Liberty. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Odometer Fraud. The contact purchased a 2006 Jeep Liberty on January 16, 2026, from a used car dealer. While attempting to obtain insurance for the vehicle, the insurance company discovered a mileage discrepancy. The insurance company informed the contact that the vehicle could not be insured due to the mileage discrepancy. The dealer was contacted however, while attempting to retrieve a Carfax report; Carfax could not provide the report. At the time of the purchase, the mileage was 143,000; however, the insurance company discovered that the mileage was 168,000 in 2020.
The front lower ball joints have repeatedly failed under recall. The dealer says I now have to pay to have it repaired properly, under recall
The contact owns a 2006 Jeep Liberty. The contact stated that while driving approximately 20-25 MPH, the front control arm fractured. The front wheel seized, and the vehicle drove into a driveway. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The local dealer was contacted and suggested an appointment, and that the rear control arm was not covered under warranty. The contact was informed about NHTSA Campaign Number: 13V252000 (Fuel System, Gasoline, Structure) and NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V278000 (Suspension). The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and referred the contact to the local dealer for assistance. The approximate failure mileage was 180,000.
Vehicle: 2006 Jeep Liberty VIN: [XXX] Summary: The front lower ball joint on my 2006 Jeep Liberty failed while the vehicle was in normal use. This failure matches the defect described in NHTSA Recall 06V288000 (Chrysler F23), which involves corrosion and separation of the front lower ball joints. My VIN does not currently show this recall as open, but the failure occurred exactly as described in the recall documentation. Details: In November 2025, the front end of the vehicle collapsed due to a lower ball joint separation. The joint failed without warning, causing loss of steering control. The vehicle had to be towed home by AAA. The failure is consistent with the recall condition involving water intrusion, corrosion, and separation of the lower ball joint from the steering knuckle. The vehicle still has other open recalls (fuel tank and rear lower control arms), but the front lower ball joint recall does not appear as open in the NHTSA VIN lookup. I believe the recall may have been incorrectly marked as completed in the past, or the original repair was not performed or not performed correctly. The defect has clearly recurred. Safety Concern: This is a serious safety hazard. The ball joint separation caused sudden loss of steering and could have resulted in a crash. The defect is identical to the condition described in Recall 06V288000. Requested Action: I am requesting that NHTSA review this case and require Chrysler/Stellantis to perform the recall repair for the front lower ball joints, as the defect has reoccurred and the recall never expires. I also request verification of whether the recall was ever properly completed on this VIN. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Every time I pump gas it spits back out at me. No matter what I do. This is completely unacceptable and dangerous

I was driving down the freeway at 70 mph, and suddenly my car (2006 Jeep Liberty) felt as if the rear end was dragging and I began to lose control of my vehicle. The icy Michigan conditions were no help, but thankfully the drivers surrounding me were attentive and moved out of the way until i was able to regain control and pull onto the shoulder. I had my vehicle towed to a shop, where i was informed the rear control arm had fractured and in turn damaged the rear axle. I found out there was a recall for this EXACT problem on my car, a blessing because my family is struggling very badly financially. BUT, Chrysler says my vehicle's VIN is not listed on the recall and it is not their problem. Not only is this extremely dangerous for all drivers of these effected vehicles, but my kids missed school today because I don't have a functioning vehicle. Manufacturers need to be held accountable and publicly announce ALL VEHICLES THAT COULD BE EFFECTED, not whichever number of vehicles pleases public relations.
I purchased the car on 10/07\2024, the dealer said there was a recall and I assumed it was for this issue: When I fill the tank it shoots fuel all over the place. Ive tried different gas stations but it doesn't help, it still shoots or spills fuel all over the place. I checked online and this seems to be a known problem caused by the ethanol in the fuel reacting with a check valve. HAVING FUEL SHOOT OUT AT YOU EVERY TIME YOU FILL THE CAR IS DANGEROUS!!!
The contact owns a 2006 Jeep Liberty. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the steering wheel was loose, with a clunking sound coming from the steering wheel. The vehicle was taken for inspection and failed the inspection. The vehicle was diagnosed by a certified mechanic, and the contact was informed that the driver's side ball joint was detaching and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was taken to another certified mechanic to be repaired. Two years later, the steering was loose again. The vehicle was taken for inspection, and it failed the inspection again. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact researched and found information about NHTSA Campaign Number: 06V288000 (Suspension); and associated the failure with the recall. The dealer was contacted and confirmed that the VIN was not included in the recall. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was 87,803.

The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the abnormal sound was due to a lower control arm failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recalls repairs. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 63,000. Parts distribution disconnect.

The front lower ball joint on the passenger side broke in half which caused my tire to completely separate from the car. Luckily it happened in my driveway, but I had just gotten off the interstate going 75 mph. After replacing it, a closer inspection was done on both upper front ball joints and the driver side lower ball joint. All need replacement. It was a near miss crash, but mine and others safety is still on jeopardy because I can't afford to replace all of them. I haven’t received any recall information in the mail from the manufacturer.
The rear lower control arms on my car are about to break. One has holes all the way through. At 40 mph, vehicle shakes in back. Issue also causes stability control to malfunction. No Jeep dealers that I can use will make appointments before 06/27 even after being shown the terrible condition of the parts. Nor do they offer a loaner car. I contacted Jeep themselves and was offered NO manner of accommodation or compensation. I drive for a living, so I can either risk my safety, or give up two weeks income, and job, waiting for Jeep and it's dealers to fix defective equipment. If Jeep and their dealers are unable/unwilling to fix dangerous recalls in a timely manner, they should either afford customer a rental car, or offer to buy the vehicle at market value. I would have accepted either, and not filed this complaint, had I been offered.

A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. I scheduled an appointment to do a recall with State Line Chrysler 2 weeks in advance. State Line Chrysler, 1001 W 104th St, Kansas City, MO 64114 The recall was: Manufacturer Recall NumberU38, NHTSA Recall Number18V-278. I took the day off work, arrived at 9AM, only to have them tell me they hadn't ordered the parts. I asked them to look at a seat belt issue I was having since I was already there. I called just before closing and they hadn't gotten to it and they advised me to come get my vehicle and reschedule everything when I could secure another day off work. I can't imagine this is how a safety recall and a seat belt issue is supposed to work. I feel obligated to let you know, because of the safety concerns I have for myself and others who may experience something similar.

IN DECEMBER 2020, I STOPPED AT THE POST OFFICE TO DROP A LETTER IN THE OUTDOOR BOX. I ROLLED DOWN MY WINDOW, DEPOSITED THE LETTER, AND DROVE OFF. AS I WAS RAISING MY DRIVER SIDE WINDOW, I HEARD A LOUD NOISE AND MY WINDOW DROPPED INTO THE CAR DOOR. IT WAS ANOTHER BROKEN WINDOW REGULATOR. IT WAS 30 DEGREES OUTSIDE AND I HAD OTHER ERRANDS TO RUN. I HAD TO DRIVE AROUND THE CITY WITH MY WINDOW HALF-WAY DOWN IN THE FREEZING WEATHER. JEEP HAD A RECALL IN 2010 STATING "WE ARE EXTENDING THE WARRANTY PERIOD FOR WINDOW LIFT PLATE REPAIRS BECAUSE SOME VEHICLES HAVE EXPERIENCED REPEAT CONCERNS WITH WINDOW COMPONENTS. IF YOU HAVE ALREADY EXPERIENCED THIS WINDOW REGULATOR CONCERN AND HAVE PAID TO HAVE IT REPAIRED, YOU MAY BE ELIGIBLE TO RECEIVE REIMBURSEMENT." WHEN I WAS NOTIFIED ABOUT THE RECALL, I SUBMITTED RECEIPTS FOR THE THREE INCIDENTS I HAD WITH BROKEN WINDOW REGULATORS THAT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. CHRYSLER REIMBURSED ME MY FULL OUT-OF-POCKET EXPENSES OF $708.28 ON JANUARY 24, 2011. NOW I NEED THEM TO PAY ME $461.50 FOR THE WINDOW REGULATOR THAT WAS REPLACED ON APRIL 14, 2021. THIS IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM, AND MOST OF ALL, A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE OF THE DISTRACTION IT CAUSES TO A DRIVER. I RECENTLY READ THE FOLLOWING: DISTRACTED DRIVING IS A DEADLY PROBLEM'IT LED TO 3,142 DEATHS IN 2019, ACCORDING TO THE MOST RECENT STATISTICS FROM THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION (NHTSA). CHRYSLER SHOULD EXTEND THE WINDOW REGULATOR RECALL ON JEEPS AND REIMBURSE ME $461.50 BECAUSE THIS IS A REAL SAFETY HAZARD. WHAT IF I HAD BEEN DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE AT 70 MPH AND MY SIX POUND BABY WAS IN HIS CAR SEAT IN THE BACK SEAT, AND HIS WINDOW FELL IN DUE TO A BAD REGULATOR? THAT WOULD BE A MAJOR DISTRACTION TO ME AND A DEFINITE SAFETY CONCERN FOR MY BABY. THIS IS DEFINITELY NOT A PARTS PROBLEM. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE.
FRONT WINDOW REGULATOR ISSUES. TODAY THE DRIVER'S SIDE WINDOW FELL WHILE STATIONARY. A FEW MONTHS AGO, THE PASSENGER SIDE BROKE WHILE DRIVING. THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE WINDOW IS SOUNDING LIKE IT MAY GO AT ANY MOMENT. I TOOK APART THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE WHEN THAT WINDOW FELL THINKING IT JUST FELL OFF TRACK. I DISCOVERED A PIECE OF THE REGULATOR IS BROKEN. IN DOING RESEARCH I SEE THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON ISSUE! THIS POSES A SAFETY HAZZARD!! THERE WAS A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT IN 2013 REGARDING THIS ISSUE. HTTPS://TOPCLASSACTIONS.COM/LAWSUIT-SETTLEMENTS/LAWSUIT-NEWS/41976-JEEP-WINDOW-DEFECT-CLASS-ACTION-LAWSUIT-CERTIFIED-DESPITE-SANCTIONS/
GASTANK ALWAYS OVERFLOWS WHEN FILLING AT ANY GAS STATION.
THERE IS AN ACTIVE RECALL ON SOME 2006 JEEP LIBERTY'S, HOWEVER MINE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL BUT IS HAVING THE ISSUES OF THE RECALL. I NEED MY VEHICLE INCLUDED IN THE RECALL SINCE IT IS A PROBLEM MY VEHICLE IS EXPERIENCING. I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER THAT THE FRONT BALL JOINTS (CONTROL ARMS) ARE OUT AND THAT IS WHAT THE RECALL IS FOR. THERE WAS ALSO A RECALL FOR THE REAR CONTROL ARMS AND WE HAD THAT RECALL CORRECTED. PLEASE ADD MY CAR TO THE RECALL LIST SO THSI CAN BE CORRECTED.
I'VE HAD LOWER BALL JOINTS, BUSHING AND CONTROL ARMS ALREADY REPLACED ONCE IN 2017 AND NOW THEY ARE OUT AGAIN. I'VE BEEN TOLD BY MOPAR THAT MY 2006 LIBERTY WAS MADE 5 WEEKS AFTER THE LAST ONE INVOLVED IN THE RECALL.THIS IS INEXCUSABLE. I'VE HAD 3 WINDOW REGULATORS REPLACED. THIS IS A FATALITY WAITING TO HAPPEN IF I DRIVE. I STARTED HEARING AND FEELING THE BALL JOINTS GOING BAD ABOUT 2 WEEKS AGO. I HARDLY HAVE DRIVEN IT SINCE I WORK FROM HOME NOW. CAN CHRYSLER SEE ALL THESE COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE BALL JOINTS AND STILL NOT ADD THESE 06 JEEP'S TO THAT RECALL. THIS IS NOT GOOD BUSINESS AT ALL. ALSO JUST HAD FRONT BRAKES DONE 1 YEAR AGO AND THEY NEED REPLACED ALREADY. IGNITION - MY KEY WILL NOT COME OUT OF THE IGNITION UNLESS I PUSH ON THE IGNITION CABLE. PLEASE HELP ME TO GET THESE PROBLEMS FIXED. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE FROM CHRYSLER.
YESTERDAY MY ABS AND ESB LIGHTS CAME ON. I DID NOTICE A BIT OF GRINDING TYPE NOISE APPROXIMATELY TWICE IN A FULL DAY OF DRIVING. TODAY, SAME THING, BUT LIGHTS WENT OFF A COUPLE OF TIMES RIGHT AFTER START UP. MY BRAKES AND TIRES WERE REPLACED IN LATE AUGUST. THE REPAIR SHOP SAID MY BRAKES WERE IN GOOD ORDER BUT THE RIGHT REAR WHEEL SPEED SENSOR IS BAD. IF THIS DOESN'T CORRECT ISSUE, A WHEEL ALIGNMENT AND RESET THE STEERING ANGLE IS RECOMMENDED. NONE OF THESE ISSUES WOULD WARRANT THE ODD GRINDING NOISE WHEN BREAKING AND ONLY OCCASSIONALLY DOES THIS HAPPEN AND IT DID NOT OCCUR WHEN THE TECHNICIAN DROVE IT. THIS WAS ALL ON CITY STREETS AND DRIVING STRAIGHT IN GOOD WEATHER. A QUICK GOOGLE SEARCH INDICATES THIS IS A PROBLEM WITH MANY OWNERS OF THE 2006 JEEP LIBERTY. MANY PEOPLE HAVE REPLACED THE BRAKES, SENSORS, ROTORS AND ALL THINGS BRAKES BUT STILL EXPERIENCE THE LIGHTS AND THE NOISE. OFTEN, THERE IS REFERENCE MADE TO THE CLOCK SPRING. SINCE I SAW SO MANY COMPLAINTS AND MY REPAIRMAN WAS SO VAGUE THAT HIS RECOMMENDATIONS WOULD ACTUALLY SOLVE THE ISSUE, I FELT IT IS WORTHY OF INVESTIGATING.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 JEEP LIBERTY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE IN LINE AT A FAST FOOD DRIVE THRU, THE VEHICLE STARTED MAKING AN ABNORMAL SQUEAKING SOUND AS THE CONTACT BEGAN TO COAST FORWARD, WITHOUT WARNING. AS HE PROCEEDED TO MAKE A LEFT TURN, THE LOWER BALL JOINT SEPARATED FROM THE CONTROL ARM RESULTING IN AN UNKNOWN FLUID LEAKING FROM THE VEHICLE. BECAUSE OF THE BALL JOINT SEPARATION, THE FRONT PASSENGER'S SIDE TIRE POPPED OUT OF PLACE. DUE TO THE FAILURE, THE CONTACT HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO HIS RESIDENCE. THE FOLLOWING DAY THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE MECHANIC DIAGNOSED THE VEHICLE WITH A FRACTURED CONTROL ARM THAT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT THEN CALLED DELLEN CHRYSLER JEEP DODGE (2640 W. MAIN ST, GREENFIELD, IN 46140) WHERE HE WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 18V278000 (SUSPENSION). THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO JOHN ELWAY'S CLAREMONT CHRYSLER DODGE JEEP RAM(620 AUTO CENTER DR, CLAREMONT, CA 91711) WHERE SHE GIVEN A DIAGNOSTIC FEE TO THE VEHICLE INSPECTED, THE CONTACT DECLINED THE DIAGNOSTIC FEE. THE MANUFACTURER HAD YET TO BE NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE HAD YET BE REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 170,000.
Hello, my name is Jamie Woodley. I'm filing this complaint on my 2006 Jeep Liberty Sport. Currently, there's a recall for the Suspension Rear lower control arms. I've read the previous recalls on it, which I saw this vehicle has been reprogrammed before. I've only had the vehicle for a few months and I've had an oil leak, bad thermostat, and the transmission is busted. I can't reverse or drive over 10 mph. I heard the transmission may be in Fail Safe mode. I had Midas do a full inspection, but they failed to acknowledge the lower control arms by suggesting brakes. I knew it wasn't the brakes. The technician drove the vehicle after the brakes were done, but I still heard/felt a problem with the Suspension. There is a recall for that from 2018. I purchased the vehicle last year in March 2020. Also, the rear lift gate was dented when I bought it like the vehicle may have been in an accident. This was a vehicle I purchased for my 2 kids and I. This vehicle has been giving me problems since I bought it. The back driver's side window won't go all the way up. I have to keep a stick in between just to keep the window from falling all the way in the door. Definitely not a safe vehicle. My Engine stalled out on the free way while I was on my way to pick up my kids. After my oil change, no oil light came on. I am seeking help with any buy back programs or a valued trade in appraisal. I have a quote from Conrad's on how much it's going to cost to fix it and the price is over $3,000. I have extended warranty, but am unsure if it will cover any service requests. That is pretty outrageous that it's going to cost that much to fix it. I've been at Take 5 to keep up on the maintenance and was told I had an oil leak somewhere. On top of the brakes, I've spent money on 4 new tires, 6 ignition coils, an O2 Sensor, and I bought a New PCM/ECU computer I have yet to have installed. Feel free to contact me at the information I've provided. I'd be truly grateful for any assistance. Thanks!
I HAVE BEEN THE SOLE OWNER OF THIS VEHICLE PURCHASED NEW IN 2006 AND HAVE EXPERIENCED DOOR WINDOW ISSUES OCCURRING 8 TIMES DUE TO "LIFT PLATE, AND REGULATOR" PROBLEMS. I CONTACTED CHRYSLER REPORTING THE MOST RECENT ISSUE AND THEY STATED THE VEHICLE WAS TOO OLD FOR A ACTIVE COMPLAINT OR ANY REIMBURSEMENT. I WANT AWARENESS OF THIS ISSUE TO BE KNOWN AND REPORTED.
