I'M SPEEDING UP AS I'M PASSING A TRUCK ON 395, SIGNALING WITH LEFT BLINKER. START SPEED AS BEGINNING TO PASS IS APPROX. 55 MPH. I SIGNAL RIGHT AS I PULL BACK IN THE SOUTH BOUND LANE, TAKE MY FOOT OFF THE GAS PEDAL AS I NOTICE I'M DRIVING 80 MPH. THE GAS PEDAL IS STUCK AND THE CAR IS GOING 80 MPH ON ITS OWN. I STEP ON THE BRAKE CAREFULLY BUT ITS ROCK HARD AND DOESN'T MOVE AT ALL. AT THIS POINT THE CAR IS STUCK AT 80 MPH. I TRY TO BRAKE AGAIN BUT THE SAME - BRAKE PEDAL IS STUCK, DOESN'T MOVE AT ALL AND IS ROCK HARD. ROAD CONDITIONS ARE GOOD SO I'M IN A "CONTROLLED PANIC", AND TRY THE BRAKE ONE MORE TIME. THIS TIME THE BRAKES ENGAGE AND I GET THE CAR DOWN TO 65 MPH. I DON'T WANT TO BURN THE BRAKES SO I RELEASE THE BRAKE AND IMMEDIATELY THE CAR SPEEDS UP ON ITS OWN TO 80 MPH. I REPEAT. SLOW TO 65 MPH, STEP OFF THE BRAKE AND AGAIN THE CAR IMMEDIATELY SPEEDS UP TO 80 MPH. AT THIS POINT MY THOUGHTS GO TO CRUISE CONTROL (WHICH I HAD NOT ACTIVATED OR USED ON THIS TRIP). I PULL THE "CANCEL" ON THE CRUISE CONTROL, NOTHING. I TRY AGAIN AND LOOK AT THE DASHBOARD WHERE THE CRUISE CONTROL LIGHT IS "OFF", INDICATING CRUISE CONTROL IS NOT ON. I TURN THE CRUISE CONTROL ON AND PULL THE "CANCEL" AGAIN AND BRAKE. THIS TIME THE CAR COMES OUT OF IT, AND I TURN THE CRUISE CONTROL OFF AGAIN. SINCE THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS NOT EVEN ON TO BEGIN WITH, I DON'T KNOW IF THAT'S WHAT ACTUALLY MADE THE CAR 'UNFREEZE'. I WAS LUCKY I WAS ON A STRAIGHT STRETCH OF ROAD WITH NO TRAFFIC IN FRONT OF ME. SINCE I WAS PASSING A TRUCK I'M NOT 100% SURE IF I SPED UP TO 80 MPH OR IF THE CAR SUDDENLY DID THAT ON ITS OWN. I DO BELIEVE THE CAR DID THAT, AS THERE WAS NO REASON TO GET UP TO THAT SPEED TO PASS SAFELY.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 JEEP LIBERTY. WHILE DRIVING AT 5 MPH, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED RAPIDLY WITHOUT WARNING. MONROEVILLE CHRYSLER JEEP IN MONROEVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT FOR SERVICE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 88,000.
SEPT. 8, 2012 I TOOK MY JEEP TO THE DEALERSHIP I PURCHASED IT FROM, AND HAVE HAD ALL MAINTENANCE WORK COMPLETED BY, FOR ROUTINE FACTORY MAINTENANCE AND AN OIL CHANGE. I TOLD THEM I WAS LEAVING FOR AN EXTENDED ROAD TRIP AND REQUESTED THEY LOOK EVERYTHING OVER TO SEE IF THERE MIGHT BE ANY SAFETY ISSUES. ON SEPT. 17, 2012 WHILE TRAVELING ON THE INTERSTATE, I ACCELERATED AND THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL STUCK. I DO NOT HAVE CRUISE CONTROL AND IT WAS NOT RELATED TO THE FLOOR MATS. THIS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES WHILE ON THE ROAD TRIP. I RETURNED HOME SEPT. 19, 2012 AND FOR THE NEXT 2 WEEKS THE ACCELERATOR STUCK INTERMITTENTLY, WITH NO COMMON UNDERLYING CAUSE. OCT. 2, 2012, WHILE BACKING INTO A PARKING SPACE THE ACCELERATOR STUCK AT A HIGH RPM AND I NEARLY CRASHED. I CONTACTED THE SAME DEALERSHIP, WHO ORIGINALLY WANTED TO LOOK AT THE VEHICLE ALMOST A WEEK LATER EVEN AFTER I EXPLAINED HOW SERIOUS THE ISSUE WAS. I MANAGED TO TALK THEM INTO LOOKING AT THE JEEP ON OCT 3, 2012 AND THEY WERE ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE ACCELERATOR STICKING ON THEIR FIRST TRY. THEY CONTACTED ME LATER IN THE DAY TO TELL ME IT WOULD BE $385 TO FIX AND WAS NOT COVERED UNDER MY EXTENDED MANUFACTURER WARRANTY. I CONTACTED THE WARRANTY ADMINISTRATORS WHO ALSO SAID IT WAS NOT COVERED AS THE ACCELERATOR IS CONSIDERED "AN ACCESSORY". I TRIED TO GET SOME ASSISTANCE THROUGH CHRYSLER CUSTOMER CARE ASSISTANCE TO NO AVAIL. NOW THE ISSUE HAS BECOME SERIOUS ENOUGH THAT I'M AFRAID TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE. IN OTHER WORDS, IT IS WORSE NOW THAN BEFORE. I'D LIKE TO RECEIVE SOME ASSISTANCE WITH THIS ISSUE AND/OR FIND OUT WHAT TRULY CONSTITUTES A VEHICLE ACCESSORY, AS THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL SEEMS TO BE AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE VEHICLE'S OPERATION, NOT AN "ACCESSORY" LIKE A STEREO OR LUGGAGE RACK. VEHICLE ACCELERATED AND WOULD NOT STOP. I DID HARD BRAKING AND IT JUST PUSHED IT ANYWAY. PULLED OFF THE ROAD AND THE WHEELS DUG TRENCHES IN THE DIRT. GOT IT STOPPED, CALLED A WRECKER AND HAD IT TOWED TO THE JEEP DEALER WHERE WE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE, TOLD THEM WHAT HAPPENED AND THAT THE THROTTLE LIGHT CAME ON THE DASHBOARD AND THEY SAID THEY COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG AND THAT THEY HAD NEVER HEARD OF THIS HAPPENING TO ANYONE ELSE. THEY RESET THE COMPUTER AND SENT ME HOME. I AM CONCERNED IT COULD HAPPEN AGAIN. IS THERE ANY EVIDENCE OF THIS HAPPENING TO OTHERS ? *TR

THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE AND ADVISED THE VEHICLE WAS SAFE TO DRIVE. LATER, WHILE DRIVING AT SPEEDS OF 60 MPH, THE FAILURE OCCURRED A SECOND TIME. THE CONTACT STATED THE BRAKES WOULD NOT ENGAGE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 26,000.
TL*THE CONTACT LEASES A 2008 JEEP LIBERTY. ON APRIL 7, 2008, WHILE DRIVING 45 MPH, THE CONTACT DEPRESSED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND IT BECAME STUCK. THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE AND THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT THE ACCELERATOR THROTTLE FAILED. THE FAILURE RECURRED ON JUNE 6, 2008 AND THE VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY AT THE DEALER. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER AND REQUESTED A REPLACEMENT, AND THEY STATED THAT THEY WOULD ATTEMPT TO CORRECT THE FAILURE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 5,800 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 3,200.
