Michelin Defender Tire with ~90% tread exploded with no indicators or warning. VDOT repairman indicated that it had exploded from the side. Incident happened on the highway 2/24/24 going 60mph. Jeep did not observe any potholes, road debris, or curbs. I do not do off-roading. Tires had 35psi. I drive average 6000 miles a year. Tire: LT 285/70R17 121/118R dot 1b7 bf 005x 2922 load range E. Wheel: PRC 7069/AT L 13+JK 17X9 33X12.50 R17 employee from tirerack.com confirmed tire/wheel are a match. Tire is available for inspection. Will have tire shop take it off the wheel and inquire to see if they can evaluate what happened. Tire has only been inspected by VDOT employee on site of incident. No sign of warnings or dashboard light before incident until after it blew up which produced a low tire pressure indicator. Has not been reproduced or confirmed by dealer or independent service center. Safety was put in risk to driver and other drivers on highway going highway speed. Was able to control car to a stop. Jeeps are at higher risk of rolling over. Luckily nobody was hurt and no damage to vehicle other than the Tire.
I PURCHASED A 2013 JEEP WRANGLER FROM TALLAHASSEE DODGE CHRYSLER JEEP IN TALLAHASSEE, FL WITH 8+ YEAR OLD TIRES. THEY ARE DRY ROTTED. I HAVE ORDERED NEW TIRES BUT I KNOW THE DOT SAYS TIRES SHOULD NOT BE ON THE ROAD AFTER 5 YEARS. I HAD AN ACCIDENT BECAUSE OF THE TIRES I AM THANKFUL I DID NOT HURT ANYONE ELSE.
I UNDERSTAND THAT THE NEXT YEARS MODEL HAD A RECAP FOR THE 2014 MODEL FOR THE TPM CONTROL MODULE. IT SEEMS TO HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY 2013 YEAR MODEL. THE WARNING LIGHT KEEPS ALERTING DESPITE THE SENSORS ARE ALL FUNCTIONING PROPERLY AND TIRE PRESSURE CHECKED.
ON THURSDAY, AUGUST 23, 2018 AT APPROXIMATELY 12:20 I WAS DRIVING DOWN I820 SOUTH BOUND AT THE SPEED OF 65 MPH WHEN I HEARD A LOUD POP THAT SOUNDED LIKE A GUNSHOT, ABOUT 30 SECONDS OR LESS LATER THERE WAS ANOTHER ONE. THE STEERING WHEEL STARTED SHAKING AND I ALMOST LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. LUCKILY, I WAS IN THE FAR RIGHT LANE AND AT AN EXIT WHEN I REGAINED CONTROL AND I IMMEDIATELY TOOK THE EXIT AND GOT TO THE SHOULDER OF THE SERVICE ROAD. IT APPEARS THE TIRE FAILED FROM THE SIDEWALK. SEE ATTACHED PICTURE UP CLOSE TO VIEW TWO SIDEWALL RUPTURES CONSISTANT WITH THE SOUNDS AND TIRE FAILURE. TIRE IS GOODYEAR EAGLE RSA WITH APPROXIMATELY 55% TREADLIFE REMAINING
STUDS KEEP BRAKEN ON REAR WHEELS
I HAD MY JEEP TIRE ROTATED AND WHEN DRIVING AWAY AT 40 MPH I FELT A WOBBLE. I TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK INTO THE DEALER AND THERE WE PERFECT CUTS ALONG THE TIRES ON THE FRONT. ONE IS SLICED AND THE OTHER LOOKS LIKE SECTIONS WERE SLICED OFF. IT JUST SEEMS VERY WEIRD TO ME. *TR
I PURCHASED A WRANGLER JEEP SPORT IN 2013 AND HAVE HAD TWO FLATS. IT CAME WITH WRANGLER GOODYEAR 255 75 17 IN TIRES. THE FIRST FLAT I EXPERIENCED WAS SIX MONTHS AFTER I PURCHASED THE JEEP AND IT WAS THE SIDEWALL AND COULD NOT BE FIXED. NOW SIX MONTHS LATER ANOTHER TIRE HAS WENT FLAT AND IT IS ALSO THE SIDEWALL. THIS JEEP HAS LESS THAN 28,000 MILES ON THIS TIRE AND ONLY 15,000 ON THE FIRST TIRE. THESE TIRES COST 290.00 A PIECE, I MEAN REALLY. WHO CAN AFFORD TO CONTINUE PURCHASING TIRES AT THIS COST EVERY SIX MONTHS WHEN THE TIRE IS RATED AT 50,000 MILES. NOW EVERYONE I CALLED SAY ITS NOT UNDER WARRANTY OR NO RECALL BUT SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH THESE TIRES FOR THE SIDEWALLS TO KEEP HAVING FLATS. AND IF I'M NOT MISTAKEN THIS IS AN OFF ROAD VEHICLE ISN'T IT, NOT THAT I'VE EVEN TAKEN IT OFF ROAD. IF THIS IS A PROBLEM WITH OFF ROAD TIRES HOW ABOUT COMING UP WITH A BETTER SIDEWALL FOR GOODYEAR TIRES, JUST SAYING. *TR
I PURCHASED THE JEEP WRANGLER NEW FROM DAVID STANLEY JEEP,IN MIDWEST CITY OKLAHOMA. THE VEHICLE HAD AFTERMARKET WHEELS AND TIRES ON IT BEFORE I PURCHASED IT. WHILE TAKING THE INITIAL TEST DRIVE I ASKED THE SALESMAN IF THE SPEEDOMETER HAD BEEN ADJUSTED FOR THE OVERSIZED TIRES. HE ASSURED ME THAT IT HAD BECAUSE THEY WOULD NEVER SELL ANYTHING THAT WASN'T RIGHT. ABOUT A MONTH AFTER I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE I WAS PULLED OVER FOR GOING 30 IN A 25 ZONE. I HAD SEEN THE POLICE OFFICER PRIOR TO BEING PULLED OVER SO I CHECKED MY SPEED AND I KNEW I WAS GOING THE CORRECT SPEED. SINCE THAT TIME I MAKE IT A HABIT TO DRIVE BY THE MOBILE SPEED RADARS THAT ARE PLACED AROUND TOWN AND EVERY TIME MY SPEEDOMETER IS 5MPH OFF. THIS IS AT A LOW SPEED SO IT WILL ONLY GET WORSE AT A HIGHER SPEED. I BROUGHT THIS TO THE DEALER ATTENTION AND THEY REFUSED TO FIX IT. I THEN SENT A COMPLAINT TO CHRYSLER AND THEY HAVE REFUSED TO HELP AS WELL. *TR
