WHEN I FILL MY 2008 KIA OPTIMA WITH GASOLINE, THE PUMP SHUTS OFF BUT GAS GUSHES OUT OF THE TANK. MY LOCAL DEALER HAS CLAIMED TO FIX THE PROBLEM, BUT IT STILL HAPPENS. THE SERVICE DEPT. RARELY ANSWERS THEIR TELEPHONE SO I CAN'T EVEN CALL THEM TO GET THE PROBLEM HANDLED. *TR

FORMAL COMPLAINT AGAINST ENTERPRISE AND BRIDGESTONE/FIRESTONE REGARDING IMPROPERLY MAINTAINED AND DEFECTIVE TIRE(S) ON A 2008 KIA OPTIMA RENTED FROM ENTERPRISE RENT-A-CAR, SEPTEMBER 2008 THAT RESULTED IN CATASTROPHIC TIRE FAILURE ACCIDENT. *KB THE CONSUMER ALSO STATED INJURIES WERE SUSTAINED FROM THE ACCIDENT. CALLED CONSUMER TO SEE IF THERE WAS A POLICE REPORT AND THE NUMBER OF INJURIES. *JB LEFT CONSUMER A VOICE-MAIL STATING HER COMPLAINT HAS BEEN FORWARDED TO THE APPROPRIATE DEPARTMENT. 05/10/11
2008 KIA OPTIMA. PASSENGER AIR BAG LIGHT STAYS OFF EVEN WHEN 175 POUND PERSON IS SITTING IN SEAT. TAKEN CAR IN 4 TIMES TO BE FIXED. KIA SAYS WE ARE PROBABLY SITTING IN THE SEAT WRONG. FINALLY THEY REPLACE SEAT. STILL DIDNT SOLVE PROBLEM. DOESENT MATTER WHAT SPEED. *TR

THE SUN VISOR FELL TOUCHING THE DRIVER'S HEAD. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE SUN VISOR WAS NOT REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 128,000.
THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG MALFUNCTIONS. IT MAY OR MAY NOT ENGAGE WHEN ONE SITS IN THE SEAT. AFTER MOVING AROUND; GETTING OUT OF CAR AND/OR REFASTENING SEAT BELT IT WILL MOST OF THE TIME ENGAGES. THE SIZE OF THE PERSON, THE MOVEMENT OF THE CAR (OR NOT), AND SITTING POSITION DO NOT APPEAR TO MATTER. ONE KNOWS THAT THE AIRBAG IS NOT EMPLOYED PROPERLY BECAUSE THE LIGHT INDICATING THE FUNCTIONING OF THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG WILL READ "OFF."
I HAVE A 2008 KIA OPTIMA THAT I PURCHASED BRAND NEW IN 2007 I HAVE NOTICED THAT WHEN I HAVE A PASSENGER THE AIRBAG LIGHTS STATES THAT AIR BAG IS OFF THIS IS SCARY ARE MY PASSENGERS NOT BEING PROTECTED BY THE AIR BAG. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 KIA OPTIMA. THE CONTACT STATED THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD INTERMITTENTLY LOCK AND THE ENTIRE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER WOULD ILLUMINATE. THE VEHICLE WAS SHUT OFF AND WHEN RESTARTING IT RESUMED NORMAL OPERATION. THE CONTACT STATED SHE HAD EXPERIENCED THE FAILURE OVER A DOZEN TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOUR DIFFERENT TIMES BUT THE DEALER COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER ADVISED THAT WITHOUT A PROPER DIAGNOSIS, THEY WERE UNABLE TO ASSIST. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 34,500 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 35,000.
2008 KIA OPTIMA STALLS WHILE IN MOTION. VEHICLE WILL SHUT ITSELF OFF. IT IS AS IF SOMEONE REACHES OVER AND TURNS THE KEY OFF. IT HAS HAPPENED WITH THE CAR STANDING STILL AND WITH THE CAR IN MOTION. STALLING USUALLY OCCURS WITHIN FIRST FEW MINUTES OF OPERATION AND WITH HOT OUTDOOR TEMPERATURES. FIRST VISIT TO KIA RESULTED IN REPLACED FUEL TANK (CODES FOR BAD ROLL OVER VALVE). PROBLEM WENT AWAY FOR ABOUT A YEAR THEN CAME BACK. CAR HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP 4 TIMES OVER THE LAST MONTH AND A HALF. SHOP CAN'T DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM, SO THEREFORE, CAN'T FIX THE PROBLEM. THE CAR IS SUBJECT TO SHUTTING ITSELF OFF AT ANYTIME WITH NO WARNING, THE LAST OCCURRENCE HAPPENED JUST BEFORE MY WIFE WAS TO MERGE ONTO A BUSY HIGHWAY. APART FROM FUEL TANK, DEALER HAS DONE NOTHING SUBSTANTIAL TO REPAIR THE ISSUE (COMPUTER UPDATE, TIGHTENED LOOSE WIRES). *TR

A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED AND A FATALITY WAS REPORTED. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN. UPDATED 06/12/12*LJ THE CONSUMER STATED A RECALL CAME IN THE MAIL ON APRIL 12. 2012. PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT, THERE WAS A LOUD NOISE COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD. UPDATED 06/13/12

WHILE DRIVING WITH AN OCCUPANT IN THE PASSENGER'S SEAT, THE CONTACT NOTICED THE PASSENGER'S AIR BAG INDICATOR LIGHT WAS NOT ILLUMINATED, INDICATING THE AIR BAG WAS NOT ON. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT WAS ALSO INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE MUST BE STARTED PRIOR TO HAVING AN OCCUPANT IN THE PASSENGER'S SEAT IN ORDER FOR THE PASSENGER AIR BAG TO FUNCTION CORRECTLY. THERE WERE NO REPAIRS MADE TO THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 32,000.
I OWN A KIA 2008 OPTIMA. EVERY 3-5 DAYS THE PASSENGER AIRBAG SENSORS DO NOT DETECT A PERSON SITTING IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. I CAN DRIVE FOR MILES AND HAVE THE PERSON ADJUST THEIR POSITION AND IT STILL DOESN'T REGISTER. IT SEEMS TO OCCUR WITH PEOPLE BETWEEN 120-160 POUNDS. THEY ARE ALL OVER 5'5". I HAVE CONTACTED KIA CORPORATE CASE #[XXX] . BECAUSE IT HAPPENS EVERY THREE TO FIVE DAYS THEY WON'T DO ANYTHING UNTIL THE COMPUTER REGISTERS AN ERROR. THE COMPUTER DOESN'T THINK ANYONE IS THERE. IT DOESN'T THINK THERE IS AN ISSUE. THEY'VE BASICALLY TOLD ME WHEN IT HAPPENS TO TURN OFF THE CAR AND HAVE THE PERSON GET OUT OF THE CAR FOR 3 SECONDS AND THEN TRY IT AGAIN. THIS DOESN'T WORK WELL WHEN YOU ARE PICKING HS KIDS UP FROM SCHOOL. YOU CAN'T JUST STOP YOUR CAR IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET. I'VE DONE SOME RESEARCH. IT LOOKS LIKE KIA HAS BEEN AWARE OF THE PROBLEM SINCE 2006. I BELIEVE IT IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. IF THE SYSTEM DOESN'T IDENTIFY THE PERSON IN THE SEAT AND THERE IS A HEAD ON COLLISION THE AIRBAG IS NOT GOING TO DEPLOY. I HAVE VIDEO AND PICTURES OF IT RECURRING. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 KIA OPTIMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN THEY TRY TO STOP THE VEHICLE THE ENGINE REVS UP AND IT FEELS LIKE THE VEHICLE DOES NOT WANTED TO STOP. THE CONTACT STATED THAT IF THEY TAKE THEIR FOOT OFF OF THE BRAKE, IT FEELS LIKE THE VEHICLE IS GOING TO ACCELERATE. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD NOTHING WAS FOUND WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 34,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 60,000.
I CALLED KIA ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE WHEN LOCKED MY KEYS IN THE TRUCK OF MY 2008 KIA OPTIMA ACCIDENTLY. WHEN HE USED HIS INSTRUMENT TO OPEN THE DRIVER'S DOOR, THE ANTI-THEFT ALARM SOUNDED. HE WAITED UNTIL IT STOPPED AND ATTEMPTED TO OPEN THE TRUNK WITH THE RELEASE BUT IT WOULD NOT OPERATE DUE TO THE CAR SHUUTING DOWN. WHEN I GOT IN THE VEHICLE AND CLOSED THE DOOR IT LOCKED AGAIN AND I WAS NOT ABLE TO GET OUT. I WAS LITERALLY TRAPPED INSIDE MY CAR. THERE IS NO WAY TO ACCESS THE TRUNK FROM THE INSIDE. YOU CAN ONLY FOLD THE BACK SEAT DOWN BY USING A RELEASE FOUND ONLY INSIDE OF THE TRUNK. IF I HAD BEEN ALONE OR THE DRIVER HAD LEFT, I WOULD HAVE BEEN TRAPPED INSIDE OF MY VEHICLE WITH NO MEANS OF EXIT. THE ANTI-THEFT DEVICCE MAY PROTECT THE CAR FROM BEING STOLEN BUT IT SURE DOES NOTHING TO PROTECT THE CONSUMER. WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF I HAD A BABY INSIDE WITH ME OR IT WAS 100 DEGREES OUTSIDE AND I COULD NOT UNLOCK THE DOORS TO GET OUT? I CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASED THE CAR AND WAS PROMPTLY TOLD THAT IT WAS REALLY MY FAULT FOR LOCKING MY KEYS IN THE TRUNK IN THE FIRST PLACE. THE ALSO EXPLAINED THAT THE 'NO ACCESS TO THE TRUNK FROM THE INSIDE' IS TO PROTECT AGAINST THIEVES BREAKING INTO MY CAR AND ENTERING THE TRUNK THROUGH THE BACKSEAT AND STEAL SOMETHING SUCH AS MY SUITCASE. WELL, I THINK IT WOULD BE EASIER TO REPLACE A SUITCASE THAN MY LIFE OR THE LIFE OF A CHILD. NEEDLESS TO SAY, I DEFINITELY DON'T FEEL SAFE DRIVING THIS CAR!
FRONT PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG DOES NOT ALWAYS ACTIVATE WHEN AN ADULT SITS IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT. THE DASHBOARD LIGHT INDICATES THAT THE AIRBAG IS OFF. EVEN WITH AN ADULT WEIGHING ABOUT 115 POUNDS OCCUPIES THE SEAT. *TR
INDICATOR LIGHT FOR PASSENGER SEAT AIR BAG HAS IRREGULAR PERFORMANCE. CAN'T DEPEND ON OPERATION OF PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG. HAVE MADE 4 OR 5 COMPLAINTS WITH DEALER AND NO RESOLUTION. LOOKING AT INTERNET IT APPEARS THIS IS A PROBLEM WITH VARIOUS MODEL YEARS ON THE KIA OPTIMA AND OTHER MODELS WITHIN THE KIA FAMILY. WOULD LIKE TO HAVE RESOLUTION PRIOR TO HAVING AN ACCIDENT WITH SOMEONE IN THE PASSENGER SEAT AND THE AIR BAG DOES NOT FUNCTION.
WHEN FRONT SEAT PASSENGER SITS IN THE PASSENGER SEAT OF THE 2008 KIA OPTIMA, THE AIRBAG "OFF" INDICATOR DOESN'T SWITCH TO ON. I WAS TOLD BY DEALER THAT THE STEPS IS THAT THE CAR NEEDS TO BE OFF, PASSENGER SITS, THEN TURN THE CAR ON. THIS AUTOMATIC FEATURE IS GOING TO GET SOMEONE KILLED . . . NOT TURNING ON THE PASSENGER RESTRAINT. UNLESS THE CAR IS OFF. TRUE SITUATION - MY WIFE GETS DISCHARGED FROM HOSPITAL FROM HAVING A BABY, I PULL CAR AROUND, GET OUT, LOAD ITEMS IN THE CAR. MY WIFE GETS IN THE CAR. HALF WAY HOME, WE REALIZE THE FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG IS "OFF." *TR
WE HAVE A 2008 KIA OPTIMA, WITH 12,000 MILES.. THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG INDICATOR LIGHT MALFUNCTIONS. WHILE PEOPLE ARE SEATED, IT COMES ON, INDICATING THE AIR BAG IS OFF; WHICH MEANS, IN CASE OF ACCIDENT IT WILL NOT DEPLOY. IT HAS DONE THIS RECENTLY ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS WITH THREE DIFFERENT MEDIUM TO LARGE ADULTS. WE HAVE TAKEN THIS TO THE LOCAL KIA SERVICE TWICE AND HAVE BEEN TOLD EACH TIME, "YOU ARE NOT SITTING CORRECTLY." THEY EVEN SUPPLIED US WITH A "SERVICE BULLETIN" INSTRUCTING EMPLOYEES HOW TO RESPOND WHEN PEOPLE REPORT THIS CONCERN... INSTRUCTING THE CONSUMER HOW TO "SIT CORRECTLY." AFTER, MUCH CONVERSATION WITH THE LOCAL KIA DEALERSHIP EMPLOYEES, EVERYONE, THE SERVICE MANAGER, TECH, AND COMPANY MANAGER AGREED THAT WE HAD A PROBLEM BUT THEY COULDN'T FIX IT. THEIR REASON WAS KIA WOULD NOT RECOGNIZE IT AS A PROBLEM AND WOULD NOT COVER IT UNDER THE WARRANTY. AS A MATTER OF FACT, THE MANAGER REPORTED TO ME THAT THE KIA REP WAS NOT PLEASED THAT THE EMPLOYEES HAD USED THE WORD "PROBLEM" WHEN REFERRING TO MY SITUATION. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN AND IT LEAVES ME WITH A CAR, THAT WHEN THE LIGHT COMES ON, I HAVE TO STOP AND MOVE THE PASSENGER TO THE BACK SEAT, AS THE AIRBAG WOULD NOT DEPLOY IN CASE OF AN ACCIDENT. UPON CHECKING THE INTERNET, I HAVE DISCOVERED PAGES OF OTHERS REPORTING THIS SAME PROBLEM WITH THE SAME INANE INSTRUCTIONS OF "NOT BEING SEATED PROPERLY." IF THE KIA'S SENSOR IS THAT SENSITIVE, IT NEEDS TO BE FIXED. WE FEEL THIS NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED AND THAT KIA NEEDS TO ADMIT THE PROBLEM AND FIX IT! *TR
THIS REPORT IS SIMILAR TO REPORTS 10523036 AND 10523357 IN THIS DATABASE. PASSENGER SIDE VISOR FAILED APPROXIMATELY 1.5 YEARS INTO THE OPERATION OF THE VEHICLE: IT WILL NOT RETRACT INTO THE FULL FLUSH POSITION WITH THE CAR ROOF, OBSCURING DRIVER VISIBILITY TO THE RIGHT. DRIVER SIDE VISOR FAILED A SHORT FOUR MONTHS LATER (1.8 YEARS), AND HANGS LOW DIRECTLY IN THE FORWARD VIEW OF THE DRIVER, AT AN ANGLE IN EXCESS OF 45 DEGREES, SEVERELY IMPEDING FORWARD VISIBILITY. THE DRIVER IS TALL, AND THE DRIVER'S HEAD COMES INTO CONTACT WITH THE VISOR WHILE ENTERING/EXITING THE VEHICLE. *TR
EARLIER THIS YEAR WE PURCHASED A NEW 2008 KIA OPTIMA LX/EX 4D. YESTERDAY MY HUSBAND WAS DRIVING SOUTH ON FLORIDA'S TURNPIKE HE WAS SLOWING DOWN TO GET OFF ON AN EXIT WHEN THE CAR MADE A LOUD NOISE AND IT STARTED PULLING TO THE RIGHT. HE TRIED VERY HARD TO GAIN CONTROL OF THE CAR BUT IT KEPT ON PULLING RIGHT. HE CRASHED INTO TWO PARKED VANS THAT WERE ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD (COUNTY WORKERS). WHEN THE CAR FINALLY STOPPED HE NOTICED THAT THE DRIVER'S SIDE WHEEL WAS FACING FORWARD WHILE THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT TIRE WAS FACING COMPLETELY TO THE RIGHT. SINCE THE ACCIDENT I HAVE CONTACTED THE KIA HEADQUARTERS AND REPORTED THE DEFECT. THEY TOLD ME THAT IT FIRST HAD TO BE EVALUATED BY A KIA SERVICE CENTER BUT THEY ARE REFUSING TO PAY FOR THE TOWING. THEY DO NOT WANT TO PROVIDE A RENTAL CAR AND THEY TOLD ME IT WILL BE AT LEAST FOUR DAYS BEFORE THEY CAN EVALUATE THE CAR. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 KIA OPTIMA. THE CONTACT TURNED THE IGNITION OFF AND ACTIVATED THE OPENING OF THE REAR TRUNK WHEN SUDDENLY THE RADIO UNIT BEGAN TO FUNCTION FOR APPROXIMATELY FIVE SECONDS. THE ENGINE WAS RESTARTED AND THE GEAR SHIFTER WAS PLACED INTO THE "DRIVE" POSITION, WHILE PRESSURE WAS APPLIED TO THE BRAKE PEDAL, THERE WAS UNCONTROLLABLE ACCELERATION. THE DRIVER TURNED THE IGNITION OFF AND PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. AFTER RESTARTING THE VEHICLE HE WAS ABLE TO RESUME NORMAL OPERATION. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR INSPECTION WHERE THE TECHNICIAN WAS UNABLE TO LOCATE THE FAILURE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 6,835.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 KIA OPTIMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE AIR BAG INDICATOR DID NOT REGISTER WHEN THE PASSENGER SEAT WAS OCCUPIED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE REPLICATED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 15,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 KIA OPTIMA. WHILE DRIVING 40 MPH, AIR WOULD SEEP THROUGH THE WINDOW WHILE IT WAS CLOSED. THE CONTACT COULD HEAR THE WIND AT SPEEDS OF 40 AND 60 MPH. ONE DEALER SUGGESTED DRIVING WITH THE REARVIEW MIRROR CLOSED TOWARDS THE DOOR. ANOTHER DEALER ATTEMPTED TO ADJUST THE DOOR, BUT WAS UNSUCCESFUL. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE LESS THAN 4,000.
BOUGHT A NEW OPTIMA 2008. THE PASSENGER AIRBAG IS ALMOST ALWAYS OFF WHEN A PASSENGER IS SEATING NORMALLY ON THE FRONT SEAT. THE DEALER REFUSES TO FIX IT DESPITE THE CAR BEING BRAND NEW. *TR
SUMMARY: THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 KIA OPTIMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG SENSOR WOULD NOT IDENTIFY THAT A PASSENGER WAS SITTING IN THE VEHICLE, CAUSING THE AIRBAG TO INDICATE THAT THE AIR BAGS WERE OFF. COMPLAINED TO THE DEALER 4 TIMES. THE DEALER AND THE MANUFACTURER WERE NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE, BUT DENIED ANY WRONG.. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS FIRST REPORTED 30,000 NOW HAS 49,000. THEY SHOULD RECALL THESE KIA. LAST TIME AT THE DEALER WAS FEBRUARY, 2012. *TR
PASSENGER AIR BAG LIGHT COMES ON AND READS, AIR BAG OFF AND STAYS O WITH AN ADULT PASSENGER IN FRONT SEAT. THIS IS AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM WHICH HAS BEEN IN DIFFERENT DEALERSHIPS A NUMBER OF TIMES (TEN) AND HAS NEVER BEEN RESOLVED. KIA SAID THAT THEY ARE NOT INTERESTED IN MAKING REPAIRS BECAUSE OF THE AGE AND MILEAGE ON THE VEHICLE. THE LIGHT WAS ON AT ONE TIME WHEN AT THE DEALERSHIP AND A DIAGNOSIS WAS PERFORMED. I WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS NO PROBLEM FOUND. THE PROBLEM WITH THIS STATEMENT IS THAT IF THE LIGHT IS ON AND THERE A PERSON IN THE SEAT, AND AN ACCIDENT WAS TO TAKE PLACE, THE AIR BAG WOULD NOT DEPLOY. I FEEL THAT THIS A REAL SAFETY PROBLEM, ONE THAT SHOULD BE ADDRESS BY KIA AND REPAIRED OR REPLACE THE VEHICLE BECAUSE OF THE DANGER TO THE PASSENGER IN THE FRONT SEAT. THIS CONDITION CAN HAPPEN AT ANY SPEED BOTH OR RESIDENTIAL AND EXPRESSWAYS, IT STAYS ON UNTIL I TURN THE IGNITION OFF AND STOP THE CAR. IT WOULD COST APPROXIMATELY $100 TO REPLACE EACH BULB. THE BUMPER WOULD HAVE TO BE REMOVED FROM THE VEHICLE IN ORDER TO INSTALL THE BULB. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THEY WOULD NOT ASSIST SINCE THERE WAS NO DEFECT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 1,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 3,878.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 KIA OPTIMA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH IN THE RAIN ON A HIGHWAY AND APPLYING PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE PEDAL IT LOCKED UP. THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY WITH THE IMPACT TO THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. THE "AIR BAG" WARNING LIGHT INDICATOR ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AND REMAINED ON UNTIL THE ENGINE WAS SHUT OFF. IN ADDITION, THE SEAT BELT SHOULDER HARNESS STRAPS WERE NON-FUNCTIONAL ON THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE. THE POLICE AND AMBULANCE ARRIVED AND A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THERE WAS NO PERSONAL INJURY. THE VEHICLE SUSTAINED DAMAGES AND WAS DRIVEN TO HIS RESIDENCE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 2,600.
2008 KIA OPTIMA EXV6, SINCE NEW, WHEN LIGHTLY BRAKING WHILE DECELERATING FROM 40 MPH, THE CAR DOWNSHIFTS AND HAS AN ACCELERATION SURGE AT AROUND 25 MPH. WHEN COMPLAINING TO THE DEALER, THEY SAID THE KIA'S WERE MADE THAT WAY. THIS IS AN UNSAFE CONDITION THAT CAN CAUSE A REAR END COLLISION. THE CONTACT FINDS THIS TO BE VERY UNSAFE BECAUSE THERE WAS NO GUARANTEE THAT THE AIR BAG WOULD ACTIVATE IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT BECAUSE PASSENGERS WERE SEATED IMPROPERLY, THE AIR BAG MODULE WOULD NOT ACTIVATE. NO REPAIRS HAVE BEEN MADE. THE MANUFACTURER COULD NOT FIND ANY RECALLS; THEREFORE, NO COMPENSATION WOULD BE MADE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 5 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 5,843.

IN ADDITION, THE SAFETY LOCK FOR THE TRUNK WOULD DETACH AND CAUSE THE TRUNK TO OCCASIONALLY FLY OPEN WHILE DRIVING. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD CONSTANTLY BREAK DOWN AND THE DEALER WOULD NOT REPAIR THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED WHO SENT HER TO A SECOND DEALER FOR THE REPAIRS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 10,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 54,800.
AS THE DRIVER'S SIDE AIR BAG ASSEMBLY IS UNDER A RECALL, THE PASSENGER SIDE SYSTEM SHOULD ALSO BE INVESTIGATED. ABOUT 10-15% OF THE TIME THE PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG WILL INDICATE THAT IT IS OFF AFTER AN ADULT SITS IN THE SEAT. THIS REQUIRES THAT THE PERSON WILL NEED TO GET OUT THEN BACK IN, OR THE CAR NEEDS TO BE SHUT OFF AND RESTARTED AND THAT DOESN'T GUARANTEE THAT THE SYSTEM WILL OPERATE PROPERLY. LAST WEEK THE PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG OFF LIGHT HAS NOW BEEN COMING ON WHILE THE CAR IS IN MOTION. IT WILL APPEAR FOR A FEW SECONDS, THEN GO OFF, REAPPEAR THEN GO OFF. *TR
MY NEW KIA HAS ABOUT 700 MILES ON IT, AND WHEN I PARK IT ON AN INCLINE SUCH AS THE ONE ENTERING MY GARAGE AND I SHUT THE ENGINE OFF AND PLACE IT INTO 1ST GEAR (IT IS A STANDARD SHIFT), THE CAR SLIPS BACKWARD. UPON TAKING IT TO THE DEALERSHIP, THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE ENGINE COMPRESSION IN THE CAR IS TOO LOW TO HOLD THE CAR IN 1ST GEAR ALONE, AND THAT THE EMERGENCY BRAKE MUST ALSO BE APPLIED. MY QUESTION IS: I HAVE A 3 YR OLD GRANDSON, BUT LET'S SUPPOSE HE IS 5 AND HE WANTS TO GO OUT AND PLAY, WHICH HE COULD DO UNSUPERVISED, AND HE DECIDES HE WANTS TO GET IN GRANDMA'S CAR AND PLAY AND ACCIDENTALLY LETS THE EMERGENCY BRAKE OFF. MY CAR WOULD THEN BEGIN SLIPPING BACKWARD WITH THE CHILD INSIDE. I CONSIDER THAT TO BE A BIG SAFETY HAZARD. FURTHER I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN TAUGHT THAT IF YOUR PARKING BRAKE FAILS, THE GEAR BOX WOULD STILL KEEP THE CAR FROM ROLLING BACKWARDS. 2. MY CAR STALLS FAIRLY FREQUENTLY IN 1ST GEAR, AND VERY FREQUENTLY IN REVERSE, BOTH INCIDENTS OCCUR WHEN THE CAR IS INCHING UP OR OUT OF A PARKING SPACE. THE DEALERSHIP SAID THEY ARE LOOKING INTO IT AND WILL LET ME KNOW, BUT AGAIN, IN HEAVY TRAFFIC THIS RUNS THE RISK OF BEING REARENDED. IF YOU CAN INFORM ME ON EITHER OF THESE ITEMS, I WOULD APPRECIATE IT AS THE DEALERSHIP DOESN'T SEEM INCLINED TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT EITHER PROBLEM AT THE MOMENT. IT MAY JUST BE A FUEL TO AIR RATIO MIX GOING INTO THE ENGINE ON THE STALLING, WHICH SHOULD BE SIMPLE ENOUGH TO FIX, BUT SURELY THE COMPRESSION IN THE ENGINE CAN ALSO BE ADJUSTED SO THE CAR WILL NOT SLIP BACKWARD WHEN IN FIRST GEAR. *TR

THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 450.
