ON THE MORNING OF THE INCIDENT I DROVE TO WORK (APPROX 25 MILES) AT SPEEDS IN EXCESS OF 60 MPH WITH NO INCIDENT. AFTER PARKING I ENTERED MY WORKPLACE. DURING LUNCH I GOT IN THE VEHICE AND BEGAN TO TRAVEL TO A NEARBY REASTAURANT. I WAS DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH WHEN THE VHEICLE'S HOOD BECAME UNLATCHED AND OPENED. THE HOOD OPENED WITH SUCH FORCE THAT THE HOOD LIFT STRUT SUPPORTS BROKE, ALLOWING THE HOOD TO OPEN, OVER EXTEND, OBSTRUCT MY VISION, AND STRIKE THE WINDSHIELD. UPON STRIKING THE WINDSHIELD THE GLASS SHATTERED. I SLOWLY PULLED TO A NEARBY PARKING LOT, TOOK A PICTURE WITH MY PHONE,AND CLOSED THE HOOD. I LATER CALLED KIA CUSTOMER SERVICE AT 1-800-333-4542 AND REPORTED THE INCIDENT. I WAS GIVEN A CASE NUMBER OF 13015302. I WAS ADVISED TO PROCEED TO AN AUTHORIZED KIA DEALEARSHIP AND BE SEEN FOR NHTSA RECALL NUMBER 16V-389. IF THE LATCH WAS FAULTY, I WAS TOLD THAT KIA WOULD COVER THE COSTS OF REPAIRS. WHEN THE DEALERSHIP WAS CALLED, I WAS ASSURED THAT THERE WERE NOT RECALLS ON MY VEHICLE, WHEN TO THE CONTRARY, I WAS SENT A RECALL DOCUMENT SC134 FROM KIA CASE WORKER, BILLY WELLS. I WAS FINALLY ABLE TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT. I DROPPED THE VEHICLE OFF FOR THE APPOINTMENT. AFTER APPROXIMATELY 4 HRS THE LOCAL KIA DEALERSHIP SERVICED THE VEHICLE AND PRODUCED PAPER WORK STATING THAT THERE WAS NO PROBLEM WITH THE EQUIPMENT.
THE CLEAR COAT IS PEALING FROM THE HOOD AND REAR OF VEHICLE. I HAVE SEEN THIS ON MANY OF THESE GOLD COLORED KIA SEDONA'S INCLUDING MINE THUS I THOUGHT I SHOULD REPORT.
WE HAVE A 2006 KIA SEDONA MINIVAN WITH LITTLE OR NO RUST ON THE BODY. IN 2013 WHILE MY WIFE WAS DRIVING IN TOWN SHE HAD THE PASSENGER FRONT CONTROL ARM BREAK THANKFULLY AT LOW SPEED. I CONTACTED KIA ABOUT THE PROBLEM AND THEY SAID THEY WOULD NOT REIMBURSE FOR THE REPAIR. A COUPLE WEEKS LATER THEY CALLED AND OFFERED TO REIMBURSE ME FOR THE NEW CONTROL ARMS AND LABOR WHICH THEY DID. SHORTLY AFTERWARDS A RECALL WAS ISSUED FOR THIS EXACT PROBLEM. LESS THAN 2 WEEKS AGO ON 9/28/17 AS A WAS RETURNING HOME FROM WORK THE WHEEL BEGAN SHAKING AND THERE WAS A GRINDING AND SHUDDERING WHILE BRAKING ABRUPTLY AND I WAS ABLE TO LIMP THE VAN HOME. I HAD IT TOWED TO MY MECHANIC AND THE SUBFRAME JUST THE OTHER SIDE OF THE FRONT DRIVER CONTROL ARM HAD SNAPPED AND THE WHEEL IS JUST FLOATING AROUND IN THE WHEEL WELL. I WAS SURPRISED HOW THIN THE STEEL IS AT THE BREAK POINT CONSIDERING IT NEEDS TO SUPPORT A QUARTER OF THE WEIGHT OF THE VAN. THE SUPPORT STRUCTURE OF THE VAN IS ROTTED AT MORE THAN JUST THIS LOCATION UPON FURTHER INSPECTION.
RECALL: 16V389000 - HOOD OPENS WHILE DRIVING WE WERE NEVER NOTIFIED THAT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE. WE FOUND OUT ABOUT THE RECALL AFTER THE INCIDENT DESCRIBED BELOW: WHILE DRIVING ON A FREEWAY, THE HOOD UNEXPECTEDLY OPENED UP AND HIT THE WINDSHIELD. LUCKILY, I WAS ABLE TO SLOW DOWN AND GET ON THE SHOULDER TO AVOID A MAJOR ACCIDENT. THE ENTIRE WINDSHIELD IS CRACKED AND THE HOOD IS DAMAGED BEYOND REPAIR. I'M NOT SURE IF THE IMPACT DAMAGE ANY OTHER PARTS OF THE CAR BUT AN INSPECTION WILL BE PERFORMED BY MY INSURANCE TO FIND OUT.
DRIVING MY KIA IN FREEWAY ABOUT 55 MPH AND UNEXPECTEDLY HOOD OPEN AND CRASH MY WINDSHIELD, I TRY TO DRIVE TO FREEWAY SIDE WITH THE LITTLE VISIBLE SPACE BETWEEN DASHBOARD AND HOOD, A GUY DRIVING BESIDES ME HELP WITH THE TRAFFIC SO I REDUCE SPEED AND HIT GUARDRAIL, I DAMAGE MY BUMPER AND ALL RIGHT FRONT SIDE OF MY KIA, I WAS THINKING THAT WAS MY BAD LUCK OR THAT I DIDN'T CLOSE HOOD PROPERLY. I TRIED TO PUT HOOD IN PLACE AND USING AN ETHERNET CABLE TO SECURE HOOD AND DRIVE AT 10-20 MPH TO HOME. NEXT DAY I CALL A GUY FROM CRAIGSLIST TO REPLACE WINDSHIELD, I REMOVE HOOD AND TRIED TO UNBEND IT, FIX LATCHES AND TRIED IT TO PUT IT IN PLACE I BUY ONE USED AND REPLACE OLD ONE, I AM STILL USING MY VEHICLE BECAUSE WANT TO AVOID FINES AND I WAS NOT PHYSICALLY AFFECTED, JUST THE SCARE AND VEHICLE DAMAGE, I DIDN'T REPORT INCIDENT TO POLICE. I JUST READ ABOUT LATCH KIA PROBLEM, KIA'S RECALL NUMBER SC134, I AM STILL USING MY KIA BECAUSE CANNOT BUY ANOTHER CAR FOR THE MOMENT, ALL MY KIA IS MESSED UP IN THE BODY(BUMPER/RIGHT PASSENGER SIDE, ETC. BUT MOTOR/TRANS WORKED LIKE A CHAMP BUT COSMETICALLY LOOKS VERY UGLY BECAUSE THAT INCIDENT WITH OPEN HOOD. CAN KIA PAY FOR MY REPAIRS?

ON MAY 5, 2011, I WAS DRIVING MY 2006 KIA SEDONA. MY 2 CHILDREN (AGE 2 AND 7) AND MY MOTHER WERE IN THE CAR. ALL OF A SUDDEN, THE LEFT PASSENGER SLIDING DOOR OPENED ON IT'S OWN ACCORD. I WAS FRAZZLED ON HOW THIS MAY HAVE HAPPENED AS THE CAR HAS GREAT SAFETY RATINGS WHICH IS WHY I PURCHASED IT AUG. 2006. I WAS SO UPSET AS THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO GET ADDRESSED IMMEDIATELY. I CALLED MAJOR SERVICE IN LIC, NY AND THEY SET UP AN APPT FOR MON. 5/9/11. WHEN I BROUGHT THE CAR FOR SERVICE, I LEARNED THAT THIS IS A VOLUNTARY RECALL. I DO NOT DEFINE THIS AS A VOLUNTARY RECALL ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU HAVE YOUR CHILDREN PRESENT IN THE CAR WHEN THIS OCCURS. THEY EXPLAINED TO ME THAT THE PART HAD TO BE ORDERED BECAUSE IT IS ON BACK ORDER. SUCH A RECALL SHOULD FIRST NOT BE VOLUNTARY AND SECOND SHOULD NOT BE ON BACK ORDER. IT IS NOW 2 WEEKS LATER AND I AM STILL WAITING FOR THE PART. I CALLED KIA AND THEY INFORMED ME THAT THEY WILL CALL THE SERVICE MANAGER AND EXPEDITE THE ORDER. MEANWHILE, I NEED TO TAKE MY SON TO SCHOOL AND DAUGHTER TO THE BABYSITTER, SO I TIED A ROPE TO THE DOOR TO AVOID THE DOOR FROM FULLY OPENING WHILE DRIVING. I ALSO HAVE TO HEAR THE ANNOYING BEEP NOTIFYING ME THAT THE A DOOR IS OPEN. I AM PUTTING MY CHILDREN AT RISK FOR KIA'S NEGLIGENCE. NEED THIS CORRECTED IMMEDIATELY. *TR
2006 KIA SEDONA MINI VAN. IT WOULD MAKE A LOUD BANG, POP NOISE WHEN THE WEIGHT WOULD SHIFT RIGHT TO LEFT ON THE FRONT END. ALSO WHEN TAKING A LEFT HAND CORNER. IT WAS IN TO KIA OF NASHA MULTIPLE TIMES FOR THIS NOISE. THEY COULD NOT RESOLVE THE ISSUE. WE DECIDED TO LIVE WITH IT FOR A WHILE. THE NOISE CONTINUED TO GET WORSE UNTIL WE DECIDED WE HAD ENOUGH AND TOOK IT TO A LOCAL SHOP WE TRUST. THEY REPORT THAT OUR SUB FRAME BUSHINGS AND SUB FRAME ARE COMPLETELY SHOT, ROTTED OUT. HE SAID WE WERE LUCKY WE BROUGHT IT IN BECAUSE THE ENGINE WAS NOT HELD IN ON ONE SIDE AT ALL. IT WAS COMPLETELY GONE. THIS IS ONLY A 5 YEAR OLD SEDONA WITH 80K MILES ON IT! THE ENGINE COULD HAVE DROPPED OUT OR BOTTOMED OUT ON THE HIGHWAY CAUSING A CRASH. *TR
REAR SLIDING DOOR WONT LATCH OR WILL COME UNLATCHED WHILE DRIVING. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. KIA HAS IT ON A SERVICE NOTE BUT IF CAR IS NOT UNDER WARRANTY THEY WILL NOT REPAIR. *TR
WE OWN A 2006 KIA SEDONA, BOUGHT USED. THE POWER SLIDING DOORS HAVE MALFUNCTIONED NUMEROUS TIMES. ONCE ON THE DRIVER SIDE, AND NOW WE ARE ON THE THIRD REPAIR FOR THE PASSENGER POWER SLIDING DOOR IN LESS THAN A YEAR. THE OCCURRENCES ARE RANDOM. THE DOOR WILL NOT CLOSE OR LATCH WHETHER WE DO IT MANUALLY OR USE THE POWER BUTTONS. THERE IS NO WARNING; IT JUST STOPS WORKING. THERE ARE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS FROM OTHER CONSUMERS ABOUT THE EXACT SAME ISSUE. THIS IS VERY MUCH A SAFETY RELATED ISSUE, NOT JUST AN INCONVENIENCE. AT WHAT POINT DOES A COMPLAINT STOP BEING A SERVICE BULLETIN AND BECOME A PRODUCT RECALL? THE LAST REPAIRS WE HAD WERE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY, HOWEVER, WARRANTY DOES NOT LAST FOREVER AND IT DOES NOT SEEM LIKE THE REPAIRS ARE WORKING FOR US OR OTHER CONSUMERS. THIS IS CLEARLY A PRODUCT DEFECT AND NOT AN ISSUE OF NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. CONSUMERS THAT ARE EXPERIENCING THIS SAME PROBLEM SHOULD NOT BE OBLIGATED TO HAVE ANY OUT-OF-POCKET EXPENSES RELATED TO WHAT IS AN OBVIOUS PRODUCT DEFECT. WE HAVE A 2006 KIA SEDONA, WITH POWERED SLIDING SIDE DOORS. WE HAD OUR THREE GRAND KIDS WITH US, ALL UNDER 6 AND THE SIDE DOOR WOULD NOT CLOSE. IT WOULD GO SHUT, AND THEN OPEN WITHOUT LOCKING. WE WERE TOLD BY THE DEALER THAT THERE WAS A BAD ELECTRONIC SWITCH. THE PROBLEM: THERE WAS NO MANUAL OVERIDE TO THIS PROBLEM. I HAD TO DRIVE IT IN THE SHOP BY JAMMING THE DOOR MANUALLY, AND EVEN THEN IT CAME OPEN SEVERAL TIMES ON MY TRIP TO THE DEALER. IF WE HAD BEEN IN A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM, OR A BLIZZARD, WE COULD HAVE BEEN IN REAL TROUBLE. THERE MUST BE AN OVERIDE FOR THIS. I PULLED THE FUSES, BUT THAT DID NOT HELP. WHILE DRIVING MY 2006 KIA SEDONA ON THE HIGHWAY THE REAR PASSENGER SLIDING DOOR OPENED BY ITSELF WITH MY CHILD SEATED NEXT TO IT IN HER CAR SEAT. AFTER NUMEROUS ATTEMPTS AT TRYING TO CLOSE THE DOOR BY THE POWER SWITCHES, I HAD TO PUSH THE DOOR CLOSED MANUALLY. I GOT IN MY VEHICLE AND DROVE TO A NEARBY PARKING LOT TO MOVE MY CHILD'S CAR SEAT TO THE OTHER SIDE. I CONTACTED MY DEALERSHIP TO LET THEM KNOW I WAS ON MY WAY AND GAVE AN EXPLANATION OF THE ISSUE. I WAS ASKED TO WAIT UNTIL THE NEXT DAY, THAT THEY WERE BUSY AND ALREADY HAD PEOPLE WAITING. I EXPLAINED THAT I HAD MY CHILD IN THE CAR AND WAS TOLD PERHAPS I COULD USE THE VEHICLE WITHOUT HER IN THE CAR, BUT THAT THEY PROBABLY WOULD NOT GET A CHANCE TO FIX THE PROBLEM TODAY. I EXPRESSED MY DISAPPOINTMENT AND TOLD HIM I WOULD BE COMING NOW TO THE DEALERSHIP AS SOON AS I COULD GET THERE. THE DOOR CONTINUED TO OPEN THROUGHOUT MY 30 MINUTE DRIVE TO THE NEAREST KIA DEALERSHIP, LEAVING ME TO PULL OVER AND, AGAIN, MANUALLY TRY TO CLOSE THE DOOR. THIS OCCURRED 6 TIMES. ON PULLING INTO THE DEALERSHIP PARKING LOT, WHICH IS DOWN A SMALL HILL, THE DOOR AGAIN SLID OPEN AND CLOSED. I WAS TOLD BY THE MECHANIC THAT IT WAS A MECHANICAL PROBLEM WITH THE LATCH ON THE SLIDING DOOR. THAT THE VEHICLES COMPUTER SYSTEM DOES NOT RECOGNIZE A BROKEN LATCH AS IT IS A MECHANICAL PART. I WAS TOLD THAT THE CAR LOOKS AT THE OPEN LATCH AS IF SOMEONE WANTS THE DOOR TO OPEN, NOT UNDERSTANDING THAT IT COULD BE A DEFECT OF THE PART ITSELF. THE PART WAS REPLACED AND I PAID OUT OF POCKET FOR THE EXPENSES, AS MY LIMITED WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED. WHEN I ASKED THE DEALERSHIP IF THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM, I WAS TOLD THAT THEY HAD SEEN IT BEFORE, BUT WOULD NOT CALL THIS ISSUE COMMON. MY CONCERN IS FOR THE SAFETY OF MY CHILD. MY CHOICE IN THIS VEHICLE WAS MADE BASED ON SAFETY. THIS DEFECT OF THE LATCH ON THE DOOR IS NOT SAFE. AND, COMMON OR NOT, MUST BE ADDRESSED. *TR
2006 KIA SEDONA, SLIDING DOORS KEEP STICKING OR LOCKING SO YOU CAN NOT OPEN THEM, IN COLD WEATHER AND IN WARM WEATHER. AFTER NOT BEING ABLE TO OPEN DOORS, IF CAR IS DRIVE OR EVEN SETTING AFTER NOT BEING ABLE TO OPEN DOORS THE DOORS WILL THEN OPEN CAUSING LIGHTS & BELLS TO COME ON. IF DRIVING YOU MAY HAVE TO STOP TO SHUT DOOR, BUT IF CAR IS TURNED OFF AND SITTING, IF THE LIGHTS & BELLS COME ON YOU DO NOT HEAR THE WARNING AND I HAVE HAD MY BATTERY GO BAD. I HAVE REPLACED THE BATTERY AND NOW BATTERY IS GOING DEAD OVER NIGHT. THIS AUTOMOBLIE IS THE WORST CAR I HAVE EVER OWNED. I BOUGHT THIS CAR IN 2008 AND HAVE NOT HAD IT 2 YRS AND HAVE REPLACED THE BATTERY, PUT 4 NEW TIRES ON AS TIRES KEEP LOOSING AIR PRESSURE AND HEAD LIGHTS HAVE BLOWN 3 DIFFERENT TIMES. AS FAR AS THE DOORS STICKING/LOCKING I HAVE REPORTED IT TO MY DEALER AND THEY STATED THEY KNEW ABOUT THE PROBLEM, BUT PUT SOME LUBURCATE AROUND THE DOORS, WLHICH I DO NOT THINK IS THE CAUSE OF THIS DEFECT, IT ACTS MORE LIKE LOCKING OF THE DOORS. IF I WERE TO HAVE A HEADON COLLISION WHERE BOTH FRONT DOORS WERE UNABLE TO OOPEN, AND THE CAR STARTED ON FIRE, NEITHER I NOR ANY PASSENGERSWOULD BE ALBLE TO ESCAPE. I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS PROBLEM, I HAVE A RELATIVE THAT BOUGHT HIS 2006 SEDONA IN THE STATE OF WASHINGTON DURING THE SUMMER OF 09 AND HIS DO THE SAME THING AND THIS PERSON HAS 3 CHILDREN THAT HE HAS IN HIS CAR. IN EARLY OCT 2009 THE DRIVER SIDE REAR DOOR OF OUR 2006 KIA SEDONA WOULD NOT CLOSE. IT WAS AS IF THE LOCK WAS STUCK IN THE LOCKED POSITION. WE HAD IT FIXED AT THE KIA DEALERSHIP. THEN IN DEC 2009 THE PASSENGER SIDE BACK DOOR HAD THE SAME ISSUE. WE AGAIN HAD IT FIXED AT THE KIA DEALERSHIP. *TR
AUGUST 12, 2008 AFTER PICKING MY CHILDREN, 8YRS OLD AND 4 YEARS OLD UP FROM THE BABYSITTER BOTH SLIDING DOORS WOULD SHUT AND REOPEN ON THEIR OWN. I WAS ABLE TO GET TO FINALLY GET BOTH DOORS SHUT BY SHUTTING OFF THE ELECTRONICS OF THE DOOR. HOWEVER WHEN I LEFT MY BABYSITTERS AND THE FIRST RIGHT TURN I MADE THE DRIVER SIDE SLIDING DOOR FLEW OPEN, WHILE MY SON WAS SITTING THERE. I CALLED KIA IN FORT WAYNE, MY CAR WAS TOWED THE NEXT DAY AND RETURNED TO ME ON THE 13TH WITH THE PASSENGER SIDE CONTROL MODULE REPLACE. THE DRIVER SIDE SLIDING PART WAS ON BACK ORDER. ON SEPT. 3, 2008 MY DRIVERS SIDE SLIDING DOOR CONTROL MODULE WAS REPLACED. HERE IT IS SEPTEMBER 8, 2008 AND THE DRIVER SIDE PASSENGER DOOR IS DOING THIS AGAIN. I CALLED KIA IN FORT WAYNE AND THEY CAN GET MAR CAR IN ON WEDNESDAY. KIA FORT WAYNE I FEEL HAS DONE EVERYTHING THEY CAN AS FAR AS REPLACING THE PART, BUT THIS DOOR IS COMING OPEN WHILE I'M DRIVING, BECAUSE SOMETHING IS SERIOUSLY WRONG. I HAVE VIDEO RECORDED THIS DOOR NO LATCHING AT THE TIME IT HAPPENED ON SEPTEMBER 8TH. I HOPE THAT KIA SERIOUSLY LOOKS INTO THIS MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE. I HAVE A 2006 KIA SEDONA. IT WAS BOUGHT USED IN 2007. APPROXIMATELY ONE YEAR LATER BOTH SLIDING DOOR LATCHES BROKE. ONCE OPENED IN NORMAL EVERYDAY USE THE DOORS WOULD NO LONGER LATCH CLOSED. THE PASSENGER SIDE SLIDING DOOR WAS THE FIRST TO GO. AFTER CLOSING THE DOOR REPEATEDLY AND HAVING IT BOUNCE BACK OPEN WE FINALLY GOT IT TO LATCH SHUT. WE THEN TIED THE DOOR SHUT UNTIL WE COULD GET IT IN TO BE SERVICED. WHILE DRIVING THROUGH A PARKING LOT THE DOOR AGAIN BOUNCED OPEN AS FAR AS THE ROPE WOULD LET IT. ON THE DAY BEFORE WE TOOK THE KIA INTO BE SERVICED THE DRIVER SIDE SLIDING DOOR DID THE SAME THING. THANKFULLY THE KIA WAS PARKED IN OUR DRIVEWAY WHEN THIS HAPPENED. NOTHING WE COULD DO, OTHER THAN TYING THE DOOR SHUT, WOULD GET THE DOOR TO LATCH. THIS IS A 2 YEAR OLD VEHICLE. THE LATCHES SHOULD NOT BE HAVING PROBLEMS. THANK GOD NO ONE WAS INJURED OR WORSE, HOWEVER IF THE DOORS HAD FULLY OPENED WHILE GOING DOWN THE ROAD AT NORMAL SPEED SOMEONE COULD HAVE EASILY BEEN INJURED OR FALLEN OUT. *TR
