THE PROBLEM IS WITH OUR 2003 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY. THE PROBLEM OCCURS ALMOST DAILY. THE TRACTION CONTROL, ABS, AND HILL DESCENT (REFERRED TO AS THE THREE AMIGOS). I FEEL THIS IS VERY MUCH A SAFETY RECALL DUE TO LACK OF BRAKING AND TRACTION WHEN THESE LIGHTS ALL ARE ON. WHEN THESE LIGHTS ARE ON THE TRACTION CONTROL DEVICE DOES NOT FUNCTION. DUE TO LIVING IN ILLINOIS WEATHER THIS CREATES PROBLEMS DRIVING ON SNOW AND ICE COVERED ROADS-IN WHICH IN OUR AREA WE SEEM TO BE HAVING A SHORTAGE ON SALT FOR THE ROADS. THE FULL REASONING AS TO WHY I BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE WAS TO NOT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT ROAD CONDITIONS (I DIDN'T THINK PROBLEMS WITH SYSTEM FAILURES WOULD OCCUR WITH THE COST OF THESE VEHICLES) I FEEL THIS IS A RECALL PROBLEM. PUTTING MANY PEOPLES LIVES IN JEOPARDY WHO ACTUALLY FEEL THEY ARE SAFE WHILE DRIVING UNTIL THEY EXPERIENCE THE FAILURE OF THIS SYSTEM IN THESE VEHICLES WHILE ON A WEEKEND TRIP OR FOUR WHEELING AS WHICH THEY WERE DESIGNED TO DO. THIS IS NOT A PROBLEM THAT I CREATED ON MY VEHICLE THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT THE COMPANY CREATED WHEN THEY PRODUCED THESE VEHICLES AND SOLD THEM. I DO NOT FEEL IT IS MY RESPONSIBILITY TO CORRECT THEIR FLAW THAT THEY MADE IN THE PRODUCTION OF THESE VEHICLES WITH DEFECTIVE SYSTEM ALLOWING FAILURE DURING DRIVING CONDITIONS IF A SYSTEM FAILS THAT IS DEFECTIVE. AS TO ANY DEATHS RELATED IN THIS INCIDENT -THE ANSWER WOULD BE AS OF THIS TIME NO AND I PRAY THAT DOES NOT HAPPEN, AND I DO NOT BELIEVE THE POLICE WHERE CALLED BECAUSE I'M QUITE SURE THEY COULD CARE LESS IF THE TRACTION CONTROL OR MY ABS ARE FUNCTIONING PROPERLY AND THANK GOD THAT I DID NOT HAVE ANY PROPERTY DESTRUCTION OR CRASHES YET. *TR
BOLT ON OIL PUMP LOST TORQUE THAT CAUSED OIL LOSS AND ENGINE OVERHEATING AND HEAD GASKET FAILURE. OCCURRED ONE TIME AND HAD OIL PUMP REPAIRED. EXPANSION RESERVOIR TANK REPLACED. PLENUM LINES REPLACED. HEAD GASKET REPLACED. ACCORDING TO DESIGN FLAW INDICATED BY LAND ROVER AMERICA, THIS ISSUE IS HIGHLY LIKELY TO OCCUR AGAIN. *TR
I WAS DRIVING MY '03 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY II HOME FROM WORK AND IT SUDDENLY DIED. IT RESTARTED ABOUT AN HOUR LATER SO I DROVE IT TO THE AUTO SHOP. THEY, AFTER TALKING WITH LAND ROVER DIRECTLY, SAID THE ENGINE WASN'T GETTING ENOUGH OIL AND WE WOULD NEED A NEW ENGINE!!! WE GET OUR LAND ROVER SERVICED VERY REGULARLY SO THERE SHOULDN'T BE ANY ISSUES LIKE THIS ESPECIALLY FOR AN '03 WITH 70,000 MILES. WITH THE WAY THE ECONOMY IS, THIS IS RIDICULOUS! NOW THEY'RE TELLING US WE HAVE TO PAY $5,000 FOR A USED ENGINE WITH 40,000 MILES. I NOTICED A TON OF OTHER PEOPLE HAD THIS SAME PROBLEM WITH THE OIL PUMP FROM THE '03 LAND ROVERS. HELP!!! *TR
2003 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY II EXPERIENCED SUDDEN OIL PUMP FAILURE WHICH WILL REQUIRE AN ENTIRE ENGINE REPLACEMENT. THIS PROBLEM WAS RECOGNIZED AS A MANUFACTURING ERROR PER A LAND ROVER TECHNICAL ALERT TA03 1201 ISSUED IN 2003 BUT WAS NOT DIVULGED TO THE PUBLIC AND HAS NOT GENERATED A RECALL. THE MANUFACTURER REFUSES TO SIGNIFICANTLY ASSIST WITH REPLACEMENT DESPITE THEIR PREVIOUS IDENTIFIED ERROR AND CLEAR CONSUMER EXPECTATION THAT OIL PUMP MALFUNCTIONS AND/OR ENGINE REPLACEMENTS ARE NOT EXPECTED AFTER 5 YEARS/60K MILES OF USE WITH A NORMALLY MAINTAINED ENGINE. *TR
LAND ROVER TECHNICAL ALERT TA03-1201 OIL PUMP FAILURES ON 2003 DISCOVERY II VEHICLES MAY BE THE RESULT OF A MANUFACTURING ERROR. VINS 3A771801 - 3A808362 ARE THE AFFECTED VEHICLES. THE ALERT STATES THE ONLY EFFECTIVE REPAIR IS ENGINE REPLACEMENT. I'VE BEEN TOLD LAND ROVER WILL NOT PAY FOR THIS REPAIR. WHY? *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE WOULD SUDDENLY STALL. THE FAILURE WAS DIAGNOSED BY THE DEALER WHO CONFIRMED THAT THE ENGINE OIL PUMP WAS FAULTY AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 55,000.
WE HAVE A 2003 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY W/ 47K MILES ON IT. ON FRIDAY NIGHT, AUGUST 15TH 2008, WE STARTED TO DRIVE DOWN OUR STREET WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE ENGINE SOUNDED LIKE A DIESEL TRUCK. IT WAS HORRIBLE. WE ALSO HAD A RED OIL LIGHT. THE CAR FELT SLUGGISH, SOUNDED HORRIBLE & HAD AN OIL LIGHT ON SO WE TURNED AROUND AND PARKED THE LAND ROVER BEFORE THE ENGINE SEIZED UP. WE HAVE BEEN TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT IT COULD BE & DETERMINED THAT OUR OIL PUMP HAS FAILED. I AM UNDERSTANDING THAT THERE IS A TECHNICAL DEFECT THAT WAS ISSUED ON MARCH 14, 2003, BUT NO RECALL. THIS IS QUITE DISTURBING SINCE THE MANUFACTURING IS ADMITTING TO FAULT, BUT IS NOT SETTING UP A RECALL FOR THIS ITEM. WITH THE PRICES OF GAS, FOOD, UTILITIES AND THE GENERAL STATE OF OUR ECONOMY, I DON'T HAVE THE RESOURCES TO FIX THIS RIG AT THIS TIME. I AM HOPING THAT THE DEALERSHIP WILL FIX THIS ISSUE SINCE IT IS A MANUFACTURER'S (SELF ADMITTED) DEFECT. WE TRIED CALLING THE DEALER ON SATURDAY, AUGUST 16TH 2008 BUT THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT IS CLOSED. WE DON'T KNOW WHERE ELSE TO TURN FOR HELP BUT TO THE DEALER. AND, FROM READING OTHER FORUM POSTS FROM OTHER INDIVIDUALS SUCH AS MYSELF IT APPEARS THAT THE DEALERSHIPS ARE LESS THAN HELPFUL IN RESOLVING THIS DEFECT. GOOD BUSINESS IS GOOD BUSINESS -- AND... 2003 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY ABS/ TRACTION CONTROL/ HILL DECENT LIGHT REMAINS ON WHILE DRIVING, HAS AFFECTED THOUSANDS OF LAND ROVER VEHICLES. I WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS THE SENSOR. OIL PUMP FAILURE RESULTING IN COMPLETE ENGINE REPLACEMENT....NOTICED CAR OIL LEAK COMING FROM CAR AND ABOUT 2 DAYS LATER CHECK ENGINE LIGHT & OIL PRESSURE LIGHT CAME ON, TOOK TO DEALERSHIP...DEALERSHIP DISCOVERED OIL PUMP FAILURE AND OF COURSE ONLY REMEDY IS A COMPLETE ENGINE REPLACEMENT. UPON SEEING THE LOW OIL PRESSURE LIGHT ILLUMINATE, I RESEARCHED ONLINE TO SEE WHAT MAY BE THE CAUSE. I THEN DISCOVERED THAT LAND ROVER HAD ISSUED A TECHNICAL ALERT (TA03-1201) ON MARCH 14, 2003 STATING THE FOLLOWING ISSUE AND RESOLUTION: 2003 DISCOVERY SERIES II OIL PUMP FAILURES VEHICLES AFFECTED DISCOVERY SERIES II (LT) 3A771801 ? 3A808362 SITUATION OIL PUMP FAILURES ON 2003 DISCOVERY SERIES II VEHICLES MAY BE THE RESULT OF A MANUFACTURING ERROR. LOCATING DOWEL PINS MAY BE SLIGHTLY MISALIGNED PERMITTING ASSEMBLY OF THE OIL PUMP TO THE ENGINE BLOCK, BUT PLACING STRESS ON THE PUMP HOUSING WHICH CAN ULTIMATELY LEAD TO LEAKAGE OR FAILURE. RESOLUTION WHENEVER AN OIL PUMP FAILURE IS ENCOUNTERED ON VEHICLES WITHIN THE ABOVE VIN RANGE THE ONLY EFFECTIVE REPAIR CURRENTLY AVAILABLE IS REPLACEMENT OF THE COMPLETE ENGINE ASSEMBLY INCLUDING THE FRONT COVER/OIL PUMP MANUFACTURED TO THE LATEST TOLERANCES. I DELIVERED THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP LAND ROVER OF THE GULFCOAST, MOBILE, AL)WHERE I WAS INFORMED BY THE SERVICE MANAGER THAT MY VEHICLE OIL PUMP FAILURE WAS DUE TO THE EXACT REASON AS STATED IN THE TECHNICAL ALERT AND THAT I SHOULD CONTACT THE NATIONAL HEADQUARTERS OF LAND ROVER TO SEEK A RESOLUTION TO THIS MATTER. THE TECHNICAL ALERT STATES THAT THIS PROBLEM IS DUE TO A MANUFACTURER'S DESIGN FLAW AND ALSO GIVES THE REDESIGNED REQUIRED REPLACEMENT PARTS (WHICH IS THE REPLACEMENT OF THE ENTIRE ENGINE ASSEMBLY). LAND ROVER REFUSED TO MAKE GOOD IN THIS MATTER. I THEN CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP AND THE SERVICE MANAGER THEN CONTACTED THE HEADQUARTERS ON MY BEHALF TO GET THE SAME REFUSAL. AS I PREVIOUSLY STATED, THIS WAS DUE TO MANUFACTURER'S DEFECT AS PER THEIR ADMISSION IN THE TECHNICAL ALERT AND NOT NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. *TR
LEAK IN SUNROOF DRAIN ON THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE HAS HAPPENED THREE TIMES, RESULTED IN WATER DAMAGE IN THE INTERIOR OF THE VEHICLE INCLUDING A BURNT MIRROR LIGHT AND BLOWN SPEAKER IN THE PASSENGER SIDE DOOR. *TR
2003 DISCOVERY W/ 36K MILES. I WAS DRIVING OFF THE HIGHWAY AND HEARD A NOISE FROM THE ENGINE AND THAN OIL LIGHT CAME ON. PUT IN NEUTRAL AND PULLED OVER. HAD IT TOWED TO NEAREST GARAGE. OIL PUMP HAD "EXPLODED" AND RIPPED A WHOLE IN ENGINE "COVER." I SAW THE OIL PUMP GEAR IN PIECES. THERE IS A KNOWN TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN FOR DISCO 2003 OIL PUMP FAILURE RESULTING IN NEW ENGINE REPLACEMENT AS ONLY PERMANENT FIX. CURRENTLY MY CAR IS AT LAND ROVER HINSDALE ILLINOIS. WILL NOT COVER B/C WARRANTY IS UP 10MOS AGO. HAVE CONTACTED CUSTOMER CARE AND THEY ARE IN THE PROCESS OF DECIDING TO EITHER GIVE ME NOTHING OR A "GOOD WILL GESTURE" W/ UNLEAR MONETARY HELP. HUGE STRESS ON A CAR THAT HAS FEW MILES AND A KNOWN PROBLEM THAT COULD HAVE BEEN FIXED FOR 500 DOLLARS OR SO AND NOW COULD BE UP TO 10,000. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE. THANKS JK *TR
THIS 2003 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY BELONGS TO A FRIEND. I WAS DRIVING THIS VEHICLE, WITH HER PERMISSION, BACK TO OUR HOME AFTER HAVING THE 60,000 SERVICE PERFORMED BY OUR LOCAL MECHANIC. I WAS STOPPED IN A LINE OF TRAFFIC AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT NEAR THE INTERSECTION OF BLOOMSBURY AVE. AND FREDERICE RD. IN CATONSVILLE, MD 21228 AT AROUND 2:30 P.M. THE ENGINE BEGAN TO "ROAR/RACE." EVEN THOUGH MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE, THE VEHICLE BEGAN RACING FORWARD AND DID NOT STOP UNTIL I CRASHED INTO THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME WHICH, IN TURN, HIT THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF HER. NO AMOUNT OF PRESSURE APPLIED TO THE BRAKE WOULD STOP THE VEHICLE. (ON TUESDAY EVENING, FEBRUARY 5, WHEN MY HUSBAND DROVE THE VEHICLE TO BE SERVICE, THIS ALSO, NEARLY HAPPENED TO HIM. HE WAS ABLE TO STOP JUST BEFORE HE CRASHED INTO THE REAR OF OUR DODGE CARAVAN. HE MENTIONED IT TO ME AS AN ODDITY.) INITIALLY, BOTH OF US THOUGHT THAT WE HAD OUR FEET EXTENDED OVER TO THE ACCELERATOR. BUT AFTER DOING AN INTERNET SEARCH WE DISCOVERED THIS RECALL. I HAVE BEEN IN CONTACT WITH LAND ROVER WHICH IS RESEARCHING THE VEHICLE AND WILL PROBABLY CALL IT INTO A DEALERSHIP TO HAVE IT CHECKED. I AM CONFIDENT THAT I DID NOTHING TO CAUSE THIS INCIDENT AND THINK THAT LAND ROVER SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DAMAGES. THANKFULLY, NO ONE WAS INJURED. *TR

THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THE OIL PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VIN AND ENGINE SIZE WERE UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 55,000. THE DEFECT IS ALREADY RECORDED AS SERVICE BULLETIN NHTSA ITEM NO. 10016118. IN SHORT, THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH THE SHUTTLE VALVES IN THE ABS SYSTEM, WHICH RESULT IN THE ABS/TRACTION CONTROL/HILL DESCENT WARNING LAMP ILLUMINATION IN THE DASH, AND MORE IMPORTANTLY MAY PREVENT THE ABS FROM ACTIVATING AS NEEDED. DUE TO THE OVERWHELMING NUMBER OF OWNERS EXPERIENCING THIS SAME SPECIFIC ISSUE, A RECALL IS VERY APPROPRIATE. THERE ARE INHERENT PROBLEMS WITH THE ABS IN THESE CARS, AS IS PRELIMINARY EVIDENT IN THE FACT THAT THERE HAS ALREADY BEEN A RECALL FOR ANOTHER COMPONENT IN THE ABS (NHTSA RECALL CAMPAIGN ID NO. 04V005000). THIS ISSUE IS VERY WIDESPREAD AMONG OWNER'S OF THIS AUTOMOBILE. THE SAFETY SYSTEM OF THE AUTOMOBILE IS COMPROMISED AND THE NHTSA SHOULD REQUIRE LAND ROVER TO FINALLY ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM. *TR
ANTI LOCK BRAKE FAILURE; MULTIPLE LIGHTS ILLUMINTE WHE HEAVY BRAKING DOWN HILLS. ALL BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS ARE NEW. LIGHTS ON DASH EXTINGUISH UPON RESTART. VERY POOR BRAKING ALMOST ALLOWING VEHICLE TO TRAVEL INTO CROSS TRAFFIC. FELT AS THOUGH ANTI-LOCK SYSTEM STOPPED FUNCTIONING WITH STANDARD BRAKING REMAINING. HAPPENDED SEVERAL TIMES WITH MYSELF AND WIFE DRIVING VEHICLE. BROUGHT TO DEALER AND LOOKED UP INFO ON INTERNET. DEALER INDICATED IS WAS THE ANTILOCK BRAKE SYSTEM MODULATOR. MANY COMPLAINTS ON ROVER WEBSITES ABOUT THIS GOING FAIRLY EARLY IN LIFE OF VEHICLE. DEALERSHIP TOLD MY WIFE THAT THERE WAS STILL NORMAL BRAKING IF LIGHTS ARE ON,BUT IT SHOULD NOT BE USED LIKE YOUR BRAKING WITH ANTILOCK SYSTEMS. I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT LANDROVER HAS NOT ADDRESSED THIS ISSUE. THIS PROBLEM AS CAUSED SEVERAL CLOSE CALLS WHEN BRAKING ON LIMITED HILLS. DEALERSHIP INDICATED PART WAS $1500 AND TOTAL JOB WAS $2100 TO REPLACE, BUT AGAIN SAID IT WAS NOT NECESSARY TO DO AS BRAKING WOULD BE THERE IF LIGHTS WERE NOT ON. *TR
IN THE FALL OF 2007, AT APPROX. 75,000 MILES I BEGAN TO NOTICE A PERIODIC RHYTHMIC TAPPING FROM THE ENGINE OF MY 2003 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 2. MY MECHANIC SUGGESTED USING A THICKER GRADE OIL. THE NOISE QUIETED BRIEFLY THEN RETURNED MORE CONSISTENTLY, BEGINNING AS SOON AS THE VEHICLE WOULD WARM UP. IN DECEMBER, AFTER CONSULTING WITH LOCAL LAND ROVER DEALER SERVICE, MY MECHANIC REMOVED THE CYLINDER HEADS, "DE-COKED" THE VALVES, REPLACED GASKETS, BOLTS, LIFTERS, SPARK PLUGS, PLUG WIRES AND DRIVE BELT AT A COST OF $2340. THE NOISE CONTINUED. IN MAY OF 2008, AFTER MORE RESEARCH AND CONSULTING, MY MECHANIC DISASSEMBLED THE ENGINE , REPLACED LIFTERS, CHECKED THE CAMSHAFT, END FLOAT AND PUSH RODS, SUBSTITUTED THE ROCKER ARM ASSEMBLIES -- UNABLE TO FIND A CLEAR LINK, THE ENGINE WAS REASSEMBLED. THIS TIME THE BILL WAS $903.26. MY MECHANIC, WHO KNOWN FOR 10 YEARS AND TRUST COMPLETELY WAS BAFFLED. SENSING A UNDERLYING OIL PRESSURE ISSUE, HE ONCE AGAIN CONSULTED A LOCAL LAND ROVER DEALER SERVICE DEPARTMENT -- THEY THEN MENTIONED A PROBLEM LAND ROVER HAD BEEN HAVING WITH A BADLY MACHINED OIL PUMP HOUSING. WE RESEARCHED THE PROBLEM AND IN FACT FOUND (POSTED ON THE INTERNET BY ANOTHER 2003 DISCOVERY OWNER) AN INTERNAL TECHNICAL ALERT DETAILING A MANUFACTURING ERROR IN THE OIL PUMP HOUSING THAT MAY LEAD TO FAILURE. REPLACEMENT OF THE COMPLETE ENGINE WAS THE ONLY RECOMMENDED RESOLUTION. THE COST OF WHICH IS APPROX. $10,000. WORRIED THAT MY VEHICLE WOULD SHUT DOWN AT ANY MINUTE, I RETURNED TO THE DEALER WHERE I PURCHASED IT - THEY OFFERED ME $1,000 AS A TRADE IN FOR A NEW VEHICLE. AND THEN TOLD ME I SHOULDN'T BE DRIVING IT IN THAT CONDITION. MY VEHICLE IS NOW WORTHLESS DUE TO THE DAMAGE CAUSED BY A CRITICAL PART THAT WAS DISCOVERED TO BE FAULTY BY THE MANUFACTURER WHILE I WAS JUST 7 MONTHS INTO MY 5 YR./50,000 MILE WARRANTY. I BELIEVE THAT THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR REPAIRING THE DAMAGE. 8TR
REAR LATCH MECHANISM FAILURE: REAR LATCH FAILURE DUE TO POOR MATERIAL SELECTION CAUSING CORROSION AND STICKING OF LATCH. REAR DOOR DOES NOT CLOSE PROPERLY CAUSING A POTENTIAL SAFETY HAZARD WHEN OPENING DURING DRIVING. FINALLY BROUGHT TO DEALERSHIP AFTER LUBRICATION DID NOT WORK, AND AS USUAL THEY INDICATED IT WAS A COMMON PROBLEM. LAND ROVER NEEDS TO RECALL ALL AFFECTED DISCOVERY VEHICLES WITH OIL PUMP PROBLEMS. I HAVE HAD A TICKING NOISE COMING FROM THE ENGINE WHICH MY MECHANIC SAYS IS CAUSED FORM LACK OF OIL. AFTER RESEARCHING THE PROBLEM, I HAVE FOUND SEVERAL OCCASIONS WHERE THIS HAS HAPPENED DUE TO A PRODUCTION ERROR. AND THE ONLY FIX IS REPLACING THE ENTIRE ENGINE? I'M AMAZED THIS PROBLEM HAS NOT GOTTEN MORE ATTENTION! *TR
LAND ROVER DISCOVERY II ABS FAULT. I CANNOT DRIVE MORE THAN 5 MILES WITHOUT THE ABS, HILL DESCENT CONTROL, AND TRANSFER CASE WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATING. IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT THIS FAULT IS A RESULT OF AN ABS SYSTEM FAILURE. AFTER FAULT HAS BEEN RECEIVED BY THE CARS COMPUTER, ABS IS NON-RESPONSIVE. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AFFECTING MANY OF THE LAND ROVER DISCOVERY VEHICLES ON THE ROAD. I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR INTO MY MECHANIC WHO HAS BEEN UNABLE TO PINPOINT THE PROBLEM. APPARENTLY MORE THAN ONE ELEMENT TO THE ABS SYSTEM IS DEFECTIVE. THIS OCCURS EVERYDAY AND I'M STILL WORKING ON A RESOLUTION. I CANNOT SELL THE CAR IN GOOD CONSCIOUS WITH SUCH A HAZARDOUS PROBLEM. *TR
A FEW DAYS BEFORE THE INCIDENT ON JULY 20TH, MY WIFE AND I HEARD A VERY SLIGHT NOISE. AT FIRST IT WAS ONLY OCCASIONAL AND SOUNDED LIKE SOMETHING WAS VIBRATING IN THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. AFTER A COUPLE MORE DAYS WENT BY, THE VIBRATING/RATTLING NOISE BECAME LOUDER AND BEGAN OCCURRING MORE OFTEN. WE DECIDED TO GO AHEAD AND MAKE AN APPOINTMENT TO GET IT CHECKED OUT AT THE SHOP. THE CAR WAS DUE FOR IT'S 75,000 MILE CHECKUP ANYWAY. I CALLED THE LAND ROVER DEALERSHIP IN CARY, NORTH CAROLINA FOR AN APPOINTMENT ON MONDAY, JULY 16TH, 2007 AND HAD TO WAIT UNTIL THURSDAY UNTIL A SCHEDULER GOT BACK TO US TO MAKE AN ACTUAL APPOINTMENT. THE EARLIEST THEY COULD TAKE US WAS THE FOLLOWING WEDNESDAY. IN THE MEANTIME, MY WIFE BECAME INCREASINGLY CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF DRIVING THE VEHICLE AS THE NOISE INTENSIFIED. ON THURSDAY, JULY 19TH SHE DROVE HOME FROM WORK AND BARELY MADE IT HOME THAT EVENING. SHE SUGGESTED CALLING ANOTHER REPAIR SHOP WITH A MASTER LEVEL LAND ROVER TECHNICIAN IN THE AREA TO SEE IF THEY COULD TAKE THE VEHICLE ANY EARLIER. AT THIS POINT, THE GRINDING NOISE WAS INCREASING AND IT INTENSIFIED WHEN YOU LET OFF THE GAS. IT SEEMED AS IF THE ENGINE WAS REVVING AT A HIGHER LEVEL THAN NECESSARY AND THE TRANSMISSION WAS SLIPPING. SHE WAS FRIGHTENED TO DRIVE IT AT A HIGH SPEED AND CALLED ME TO ALERT ME AS SHE WAS DRIVING HOME SHOULD ANYTHING HAPPEN TO HER. THE NEXT MORNING ON FRIDAY, JULY 20TH I CALLED THE OTHER LAND ROVER REPAIR SHOP IN TOWN AND THEY SAID THEY COULD TAKE THE VEHICLE THAT DAY. ON FRIDAY MORNING, I WAS ONLY ABOUT A MILE AWAY FROM HOME AND DRIVING ABOUT 30-40 MILES AN HOUR ON THE WAY TO THE REPAIR SHOP WHEN I HEARD A LOUD GRINDING SOUND AND THE TRANSMISSION BECAME TOTALLY DISENGAGED. WITH THE CAR NOW COMPLETELY INOPERABLE, I WAS STRANDED ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND HAD TO CALL A TOW TRUCK. THE REPAIR SHOP TOLD US IT IS THE FRONT END DIFFERENTIAL AND WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED. *JB
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY. WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, THE VEHICLE AUTOMATICALLY ACCELERATED TO 95 MPH. THE BRAKES FAILED TO WORK. THE VEHICLE EVENTUALLY RETURNED TO 65 MPH AND WAS ABLE TO BE PULLED OFF THE ROAD. THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE SHIFTED TO NEUTRAL AND THE EMERGENCY BRAKE WAS APPLIED IN ORDER TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA RECALL # 03V133000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:CABLES). THE VIN, PURCHASE DATE, ENGINE SIZE, AND # OF CYLINDERS WERE UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 70,000.
I ENCOUNTERED A FAIRLY WELL DOCUMENTED PROBLEM WITH 2003 LAND ROVER DISCOVERIES. THERE WAS A MANUFACTURERS DEFECT IN THE OIL PUMP THAT ULTIMATELY CAUSES THE ENTIRE ENGINE TO FAIL. LAND ROVER HAS ISSUED A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN ACKNOWLEDGING THE PROBLEM YET IS NOT STANDING BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT WHEN THE DISCOVERIES BREAKDOWN. THEY HAVE TOLD ME THAT IT WAS A FAULTY PART THAT CAUSED THE ENGINE FAILURE IN MY VEHICLE YET THEY ARE TRYING TO CHARGE ME TO PUT IN THE NEW ENGINE. *JB

WE BOUGHT A NEW 2003 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY II FROM LAND ROVER OF MILFORD, CT IN 12/03. WE HAVE CHANGED THE OIL FAITHFULLY EVERY 3,000 MILES AND HAD THE NECESSARY SERVICES DONE AND WERE AT 44,724 MILES. WE WERE DRIVING HOME FROM VT A MONTH AGO AND THE OIL LIGHT WENT ON. I IMMEDIATELY STOPPED AND CHECKED THE OIL, WHICH WAS FULL. I TURNED ON THE CAR AND THE ENGINE IMMEDIATELY STARTED MAKING A STRANGE SOUND. I CALLED LAND ROVER ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE AND OUR WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED 28 DAYS PRIOR TO THIS. WE HAD IT FLAT BEDDED HOME TO CONNECTICUT IMMEDIATELY. THEN WE HAD IT FLAT BEDDED TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE OIL PUMP HAD BLOWN AND THE ENGINE HAD SEIZED. AT FIRST THEY SAID THEY WOULD NOT PAY FOR IT AS IT WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. I DID EXTENSIVE RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET REGARDING THIS PROBLEM AND FOUND OUT THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE OIL PUMPS ON THE 03 DISCOVERY MODELS AND IN FACT THERE WAS A TECHNICAL RECALL FOR THAT YEAR. WHEN WE ASKED THE SERVICE MANAGER ABOUT THAT, HE SAID THAT IF IT WAS A FAULTY OIL PUMP IT WOULD HAVE BLOWN BY 20,000 MILES AND NOT GONE TO 44,000 MILES. WE SENT THEM DOCUMENTATION OF ALL THE SERVICES WE HAVE HAD DONE ON THE CAR AND THEY AGREED TO PAY FOR HALF OF THE COST OF THE ENGINE. WE STILL DON'T HAVE A CAR, AS THEY HAVE STILL NOT RECEIVED AN ENGINE. (AND THEY DID NOT OFFER US A LOANER CAR FOR THE INTERIM). NOW TODAY I WAS DOING FURTHER RESEARCH AND FOUND ON THE EDMUNDS WEBSITE 3 OTHER 03 DISCOVERY IT'S WITH 40,000, 57,000 AND 60,000 MILES ON THE ENGINES THAT HAD THE EXACT SAME THING HAPPEN. MY HUSBAND BOUGHT ME THE 2003 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY AS A 2006 CHRISTMAS GIFT. THE CAR HAD APPROXIMATELY 46,000 MILES ON IT. WE WERE DRIVING IT AND HEARD A POP & THE CAR JUST DIED. I HAD THE CAR A LITTLE OVER A MONTH. THERE WAS OIL & CHUNKS OF METAL UNDER THE CAR. WE HAD IT TOWED HOME AS THE DEALERSHIP WAS HOURS AWAY. MY HUSBAND LOOKED THROUGH THE PARTS BOOK & FOUND THAT IT WAS POSSIBLY THE FRONT ENGINE COVER/OIL PUMP. I DID SOME RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET & FOUND LAND ROVER ISSUED A TECHNICAL ALERT ENTITLED 2003 DISCOVERY SERIES II OIL PUMP FAILURES, #T03 1201, ON MARCH 14, 2003 TO ITS DEALERS. IT ADVISED THAT THE DOWEL PINS ON THE BLOCK DID NOT ALIGN CORRECTLY WITH THE OIL PUMP. THIS CAUSED OIL STARVATION , WHICH IN TURN, CAUSED ENGINE FAILURE. IT CLEARLY STATED THE DEFECT WAS THE RESULT OF A MANUFACTURING ERROR. MY HUSBAND PULLED OFF THE FRONT ENGINE COVER TO DISCOVER THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CRANKSHAFT DESTROYED. I CALLED LAND ROVER CUSTOMER RELATIONS & SHE ADVISED ME THERE WAS NO RECALL & TO CALL THE DEALERSHIP TO SEE IF THERE WAS ANYTHING THEY WOULD DO. I AM STILL PENDING TO HEAR BACK FROM THEIR SERVICE DEPARTMENT. LAND ROVER NEEDS TO ADDRESS THE DEFECT ISSUE AS THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED INCIDENT . *AK
MY 2003 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY RECEIVED ITS SCHEDULED 60K SERVICE THEN AT 65K THE OIL PUMP FAILED AND CAUSED A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF THE ENGINE. ALTHOUGH THERE ARE SEVERAL DOCUMENTED CASES SIMILAR TO MINE LAND ROVER DOES NOT ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY OR PLAN TO RECALL. THE CONSUMER IS LEFT WITH A POTENTIAL DANGER AND CONSIDERABLE FINANCIAL BURDEN. I HAVE TRIED TO RESOLVE THIS WITH LAND ROVER WHO AT THIS TIME IS NOT WILLING TO HELP OR TAKE RESPONSIBILITY. AS I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD, THE OIL LIGHT CAME ON AND THE ENGINE BEGAN TO MAKE LOUD CLANGING NOISE. AS I BEGAN TO PULL OVER, THE CAR STALLED. I CALLED LAND ROVER CUSTOMER SERVICE AND WAS INFORMED THAT ALTHOUGH I WAS STILL UNDER THE MILEAGE,THAT MY WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED 5 DAYS EARLIER. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO LOCAL LAND ROVER DEALER AND WAS INFORMED THAT LAND ROVER WOULD NOT COVER THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER CONCLUDED THAT VEHICLE NEEDS A NEW MOTOR. AN INDEPENDENT LAND ROVER REPAIR FACILITY HAS CONCLUDED THAT ENGINE FAILURE WAS THE RESULT OF OIL PUMP FAILURE. LAND ROVER ISSUED A TECHNICAL BULLETIN ON MARCH 14, 2003 STATING THAT ENGINE FAILURES ON '03 AND '04 DISCOVERY ARE THE RESULT OF MANUFACTURING ERROR ON THE OIL PUMP. VEHICLE STILL NEEDS A NEW MOTOR, LAND ROVER HAS BEEN VERY UNCOOPERATIVE EVEN WHEN PRESENTED WITH THE TECH ALERT (TA03 1201). I AM 2 MONTHS WITH OUT A VEHICLE. CAR IS AVAILABLE FOR INSPECTION. *NM

HILL DESCENT CONTROL TRACTION CONTROL AND THE ABS LIGHT CONSTANTLY LIGHT UP, I JUST BOUGHT MY CAR,(LESS THAN 2 MONTHS AGO) WHEN APPLIED BRAKES SOMETIMES DO NOT WORK PROPERLY. I WENT TO THE DEALER WHERE I PURCHASED THE CAR ONLY TO BE TOLD THAT THERE IS NO WARRANTY ON ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS, I TOOK THE CAR TO A SERVICE DEALER AND I WAS TOLD THAT IT WILL COST APPROXIMATELY 2500 DOLLARS! ABS, TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT AND HILL DESCENT LIGHT STAYS ON. THE ABS BRAKES ARE NOT WORKING. THE DEALER TOLD ME THAT MY BRAKE FLUID WAS NOT CHANGED ACCORDING TO RECOMMENDED WARRANTY STANDARDS. I'VE DONE SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND THAT OTHERS WHO OWN THIS VEHICLE HAVE ALSO HAD ABS MODULE MALFUNCTIONS OR DEFECTS. *NM
REAR DOOR LATCHING MECHANISM FAILURE. I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE REAR DOOR LATCH STICKING AND NOT OPENING TO CATCH THE REAR DOOR. WHEN THE DOOR IS CLOSED IT EITHER BOUNCES BACK BECAUSE THE LATCH IS STUCK IN A CLOSED POSITION OR CLOSES BUT IS NOT SECURE. AS I WAS DRIVING UP THE ROAD AND TURNING ONTO A TWO LANE HIGHWAY THE REAR DOOR VIOLENTLY FLEW OPEN CAUSING THE HINGE TO DEFORM AND SUBSEQUENTLY CAUSING THE FAILURE OF THE DOOR TO CLOSE AT ALL. REAR DOOR IS RACKED IN ITS' POSITION AND THE LOCK SET IS NOW 3" INCHES + OFF KILTER. LAND ROVER QUOTES A COST OF $1000.00 TO REPAIR. MY AUTO BODY SHOP SAYS THAT IT IS SO COMMON THAT LAND ROVER/FORD QUOTES LABOR TIME TO REPAIR. PEOPLE OR ANIMALS COULD HAVE BEEN IN THE BACK CARGO AREA, BELONGINGS COULD HAVE FALLEN IN FRONT OF ANOTHER VEHICLE CAUSING AN ACCIDENT...ANYTHING COULD HAVE HAPPENED WITH TERRIBLE CONSEQUENCES. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND SHOULD BE ADDRESSED BY LAND ROVER. *NM
LOSS OF CONTROL WHILE BRAKING HARD DUE TO THE LOCATION OF THE POWER SEAT CONTROLS. DRIVERS HIP PUSHES THE SEAT BELT BUCKLE IN TO THE DRIVERS SEAT CONTROL SWITCH. WHEN BRAKING HARD, THE SWITCH IS PUSHED FORWARD, BY THE HIP. THIS CAUSES THE SEAT TO PUSH THE DRIVER INTO THE STEERING WHEEL. THE EVENT HAPPENED LATE AT NIGHT WITH NO TRAFFIC, SO THERE WAS NO DAMAGE. TRUCK WAS NOT STOPPED IN THE DESIRED LOCATION. WE HAVE REMOVED THE FUSE TO THE SEAT MOTORS TO PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING AGAIN. TRUCK SHOULD HAVE AN INTERLOCK THAT PREVENTS THE SEAT FROM OPERATING WITH THE TRANSMISSION IN DRIVE. *JB
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE STEERING WHEEL WAS MISALIGNED WHILE MAKING TURNS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO ADJUSTED THE STEERING WHEEL, BUT THIS DID NOT REMEDY THE PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE WAS RETURNED TO THE DEALER AGAIN AND THE DRAG LINK WAS REPLACED, BUT THIS DID NOT REMEDY THE PROBLEM. DURING ANOTHER VISIT, THE DEALER NOTICED THE BRACKET ON THE FRAME WHERE THE FRONT TRACK BAR BOLTS WAS FRACTURED. ADDITIONALLY, THE DEALER DETERMINED THE FRACTURE WAS CAUSED BY A COLD WELD OR WAS NOT WELDED PROPERLY WHEN MANUFACTURED, HOWEVER THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED BY THE SERVICE DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS EVENTUALLY TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT FRAME SHOP FOR REPAIR. THE VEHICLE WAS PLACED ON A FRAME ALIGNMENT MACHINE; THE BRACKET WAS BENT BACK INTO PLACE AND WELDED. THE CONTACT IS CONCERNED BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS POSSIBLY MANUFACTURED WITH THIS DEFECTIVE FRAME WELD AND IT APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN WELDED MECHANICALLY. THE EXHAUST SYSTEM WAS MISALIGNED WHICH CAUSED THE TAIL PIPE TO RATTLE. THE WAS A FLUID LEAK COMING FROM THE TRANSFER BOX DUE TO A FAILED INPUT SHAFT SEAL. UPDATED 04/06/06. *JB
I ACCELERATED TO PASS AND HEARD A MUFFLED POP BUT INITIALLY HAD NO OTHER INDICATION OF A PROBLEM. AFTER DRIVING CAUTIOUSLY FOR ABOUT 1.5 MILES THE OIL PRESSURE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. AT THIS POINT I PULLED OVER TO CHECK ON THE CAR. NO ANOMALIES WERE FOUND, SEEMED NORMAL. SO I DROVE ON FOR ANOTHER .5 MILES WHEN I BEGAN HEARING RANDOM, BUT DISTINCT CLANKING AND RATTLES. AT THIS POINT I DETOURED TO A KNOWN SAFE SPOT AT NO MORE THAN 10-15 MPH FOR APPROX. 1 MILE BEFORE THE VEHICLE BEGAN ACTING AS IF IT WOULD STALL. I SHUT DOWN AND HAD IT TOWED. DUE TO MY CONNECTIONS IN THE LR OWNERS COMMUNITY, AND IN TALKING WITH A WELL KNOWN INDEPENDENT LR MECHANIC, WITHIN HOURS OF THE INCIDENT I HAD LRNA'S TA03 1201 IN MY HANDS WITH SEVERAL PEOPLE TELLING ME THAT IT SOUNDED AS IF MY SYMPTOMS WERE EXACTLY WHAT THEY THEMSELVES HAD ENCOUNTERED. THE TECH ADVISORY IN QUESTION STATES THAT, "...THE ONLY EFFECTIVE REPAIR CURRENTLY AVAILABLE IS REPLACEMENT OF THE COMPLETE ENGINE..." SO, I WAS SURPRISED WHEN LR CONTACTED ME WITHIN A FEW HOURS TO TELL ME THAT MY VEHICLE WOULD BE READY FOR PICK UP THE NEXT DAY. I HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO RETRIEVE THE CAR UNDER PROTEST (THEY DID NOT INITIALLY PROVIDE A LOANER, AND ONLY PROVIDED A RENTAL AFTER MORE THAN 24 HOURS) AND EVEN WHEN I PRESENTED THE TA TO THEM, THEY REFUSED TO, OR WERE UNABLE TO, SHOW ME THAT THE REPAIRS THEY MADE SUPERSEDED THOSE INDICATED IN LRNA'S OWN DOCUMENTATION ON THIS ISSUE. I CONTACTED THE OWNER OF THE FRANCHISE -- THEY DID NOT RETURN MY CALLS. I WROTE A LETTER TO THEM. I WROTE A LETTER TO LRNA AND CALLED THE CORPORATE HQ SEVERAL TIMES. THEIR STATEMENT WAS THAT IT WAS UP TO THE DEALER. I EVEN HAD AN INSURANCE AND WARRANTY LAWYER TELL ME THAT I HAD AN EXTREMELY STRONG CASE -- IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN. OUR WARRANTY IS NOW EXPIRED, AND WE AWAIT THE DAY WHEN THE OIL PUMP WILL FAIL AGAIN BECAUSE LRNA DID NOT REPAIR THE ACTUAL PROBLEM, THEY MERELY REPLACED THE PARTS THAT WERE BROKEN BECAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. *JB
I HAD AN OIL PUMP FAILURE ON MY 03 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY. IT WAS UNDER WARRANTY, SO IT WAS TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. HOWEVER, EVEN BEFORE THEY GOT BACK TO ME WITH A DIAGNOSIS, I HAD RESEARCHED AND FOUND OUT WHAT THE ISSUE WAS, AS IT IS A COMMON ISSUE WITH THIS YEAR, AND WITHIN A CERTAIN VIN RANGE. LAND ROVER EVEN ISSUED A TSB ABOUT THE ISSUE, AND BY THE TIME THEY CALLED ME BACK, I HAD THAT TSB IN HAND. THE DEALERSHIP STATED THAT MY CAR WOULD BE READY TO PICK UP THE NEXT DAY, THAT THE OIL PUMP HAD, "BASICALLY EXPLODED" THAT THEY HAD CLEANED ALL THE METAL OUT OF THE ENGINE, AND THAT IT WOULD BE FINE. I PROTESTED THIS BASED ON THE TSB, PUBLISHED BY LAND ROVER, THAT STATED THAT THE ONLY WAY TO FIX THIS PROBLEM WOULD BE TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE ENGINE! THE DEALERSHIP SAID THAT THIS TSB DID NOT APPLY ANYMORE. I ASKED FOR THE DOCUMENTATION TO SHOW THAT THE TSB HAD BEEN OVERRIDDEN. THEY SAID THAT THERE WAS NONE, BUT THAT THEY HAD FIXED IT IN THE, "NEW WAY". I CONTACTED THE LAND ROVER NORTH AMERICA CORPORATE HQ AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THAT THEY COULD DO, THAT THE DEALERSHIP COULD DECIDE WHAT IT WANTED TO DO WITH THE ISSUE. SINCE THEN, I HAVE GOT SEVERAL FIRST HAND ACCOUNTS OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE HAD THIS SAME ISSUE AND WHO HAD A NEW ENGINE PUT INTO THEIR CAR WITHIN A MONTH. I ALSO HAVE FIRST HAND ACCOUNTS OF PEOPLE WHO HAD THE ISSUE, DID NOT KNOW ABOUT THE TSB, AND NEVER GOT A NEW ENGINE. LAND ROVER'S OWN DOCUMENTATIONS SAY THAT I NEED A NEW ENGINE IN MY CAR, INDEPENDENT MECHANICS SAY I NEED A NEW ENGINE, AND EVEN MECHANICS AT OTHER LAND ROVER DEALERS HAVE TOLD ME THAT I NEED A NEW ENGINE. I HAVE ALL THESE ON RECORD, WILLING TO VOUCH FOR MY SIDE OF THIS ARGUMENT. *JB
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 15 MPH THE BRAKES FELT AS IF THEY WERE GRIPPING WHILE BEING APPLIED. THIS IN TURN CAUSED THE CONTACT TO REAR END ANOTHER VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE HAD MINIMAL DAMAGE TO THE FRONT END. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP. THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM AND THE HEAD LIGHTS HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER HAS BEEN ALERTED.
DISCOVERY 2 ABS ISSUES, MAJOR PROBLEMS WITH ABS SYSTEM. UPON APPLICATION ADDS A BIT OF TIME TO YOUR ANTICIPATED STOPPING DISTANCE. VERY DANGEROUS CAN LEAD TO SERIOUS ACCIDENT DEALER SHOP CANNOT FIND HOW TO FIX IT AND LIGHTS AND ABS WARNING LIGHTS ARE ON CONSTANTLY. ABS SYSTEM IS NOT ENGAGED WHEN NEEDED. *NM
SINCE BUYING OUR LAND ROVER DISCOVERY IN FEBRUARY 2004 WE'VE EXPERIENCED NUMEROUS RECALLS AND PROBLEMS WITH THE CAR. FORTUNATELY, IT IS STILL UNDER THE MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY. THE PROBLEM OF CONCERN AT THIS POINT IN TIME IS AS FOLLOWS: WHEN BRAKING, THE LAND ROVER WOULD OCCASIONALLY LURCH FORWARD A LITTLE BIT...ALMOST JUMPING. ON OCT. 28, 2005 AT APPROXIMATELY 2:45 PM I PULLED OUT OF MY SUBDIVISION ONTO 180TH ST. IN ELKHORN, NE. I WAS HEADING SOUTH TOWARDS A STOP LIGHT AT THE JUNCTION OF 180TH ST. AND PACIFIC. THERE WHERE NUMEROUS CARS STOPPED AT THE LIGHT. I BELIEVE THE LIGHT HAD TURNED GREEN AND CARS WERE BEGINNING TO MOVE, BUT I WAS STILL BRAKING SLOWLY STARTING TO MOVE FORWARD AS THE CARS IN FRONT OF ME BEGAN TO MOVE. I FELT MY LAND ROVER LURCH FORWARD AND MY BODY WAS IMMEDIATELY PRESSED BACK INTO MY SEAT. AT THAT POINT THE LAND ROVER MADE IMPACT WITH A PIECE OF TORO IRRIGATION MACHINERY BEING TOWED BY THE VAN IN FRONT OF ME AND MY BODY WAS THROWN FORWARD. I WAS WEARING MY SEAT BELT. MY AIRBAG DID NOT DEPLOY. THERE WAS OVER $7700 WORTH OF DAMAGE DONE TO THE FRONT OF THE LAND ROVER. *JB
I HAVE A 2003 DISCOVERY II AND THE ABS MODULATOR IS HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THREE MAIN LIGHTS ILLUMINATING CONSTANTLY AND THEY ARE TRACTION CONTROL, ABS AND HILL DESCENT CONTROL, WHEN THE LIGHTS ILLUMINATE IN AMBER COLOR WHILE I'M DRIVING I HAVE NO USE OF TRACTION CONTROL AND ABS ALSO MY BRAKES DON'T WORK WELL. *NM
2003 DISCOVERY II AND THE THREE MAIN LIGHTS ILLUMINATING, TWO TIMES THEY HAVE BEEN ON AND STAY ON, SOMETIMES NOW THEY TURN ON AND OFF. TRACTION CONTROL, ABS AND HILL DESCENT CONTROL. THIS WILL BE MY THIRD TRIP TO THE DEALER FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. *JB
WHILE APPLYING THE BRAKES THE CONSUMER NOTICED THAT BOTH PEDALS WERE CLOSE TOGETHER. THIS CAUSED THE CONSUMER TO APPLY THE BRAKE PEDAL OR THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL BY MISTAKE. THE CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION, AND THE MECHANIC DETERMINED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS DESIGNED THAT WAY BY THE MANUFACTURER. *AK *SC
2003 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY II -- ON 3 SEPARATE OCASIONS. PASSENGER AND DRIVER WINDOW MOTOR/REGULATOR FAILURE RESULTS IN FAILURE OF WINDOW TO OPEN OR CLOSE. FAILURE CAUSES LOUD CRASHING SOUND WITHIN DOOR ITSELF, AND CAUSES WINDOW TO SLIP DOWN INTO DOOR STRUCTURE. IRST INCIDENT WAS IN SEPT. 2003, UNDER WARRANTY, TO PASSENGER SIDE. SECOND INCIDENT WAS SEPT. 2004 TO SAME PASSENGER SIDE---$277. FOR REPLACEMENT. THIRD INCIDENT WAS OCT.22, 2004 TO DRIVER'S SIDE--$277 FOR REPLACEMENT. DEALER HAS ADMITTED TO DESIGN FLAW BUT HAS NOT COVERED COST OF REPLACEMENT, ONLY 10% DISCOUNT. *AK
WE WERE APPROACHING THE TOLL BOOTHS FROM THE MASS PIKE AND MY HUSBAND LOOKED AT ME AND ASKED ME WHY WE DIDN'T HAVE ANY BRAKES. I FREAKED OUT AND DIDN'T KNOW WHAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN. WE WERE SURROUNDED BY CARS AND APPROACHING THE TOLL BOOTH VERY QUICKLY. WE WERE ABLE TO SLOW DOWN BEFORE WE CRASHED, BUT WE WERE AND NOW ARE VERY NERVOUS ABOUT DRIVING THIS VEHICLE NOT KNOWING IF THIS WILL OCCUR AGAIN. THE DEALERSHIP FIXED IT OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS AND SAID THAT A SECONDARY AIR INJECTION VALVE STUCK OPEN CAUSING HOT EXHAUST GASES TO FLOW THROUGH PIPES, AND MELTED VACUUM LINE TO MASTER CYLINDER. WE CALLED LAND ROVER COMPANY AND TOLD THEM ABOUT THE PROBLEM AND THEY SAID THEY WOULD RESEARCH IT TO SEE IF THIS PROBLEM HAD EVER OCCURED WITH ANY OTHER VEHICLE. THEY RETURNED OUR CALL LATER ON IN THE WEEK AND SAID THAT IT HADN'T AND TECHNICALLY, WE DIDN'T LOSE OUR BRAKES, THEY JUST WEREN'T POWER ASSISTED! CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT-WE COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED!. *AK

AFTER OWNING MY BRAND NEW 2003 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY FOR ABOUT 5 WEEKS, I WAS DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY WHEN THE OIL LIGHT CAME ON. WITHIN SECONDS THE VEHICLE BEGAN MAKING AND ODD NOISE. I PULLED OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY AND BY THE TIME I GOT OUT OF THE VEHICLE, IT WAS ON FIRE. THE ENTIRE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE BURNT OFF. LAND ROVER HAS REFUSED TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR DEFECTIVE VEHICLE AND WILL DO NOTHING ABOUT THIS SITUATION. IN ADDITION, EVERYONE THAT I HAVE DEALT WITH AT LAND ROVER HAS BEEN RUDE, INCONSIDERATE AND EVASIVE. THEY HAVE ALSO REFUSED TO PAY FOR THE PERSONAL ITEMS THAT WERE IN THE VEHICLE AND DAMAGED BECAUSE OF THE FIRE. *JB
I PARKED MY LANDROVER DISCOVERY IN THE GROCERY STORE PARKING LOT, PULLED THE KEY OUT AND WALKED TOWARD THE STORE. AFTER A CRASHING NOISE I TURNED AROUND TO SEE MY CAR HAD ROLLED BACK INTO A VAN. MY TRANSMISSION WAS STILL IN "DRIVE" AND I HAD BEEN ABLE TO REMOVE THE KEY FROM THE IGNIGTION. I CALLED MY LANDROVER DEALER. AFTER EXPLAINING WHAT HAPPENED I ASKED WHY THE KEY COULD BE REMOVED IN THE "DRIVE" POSITION, HE SAID HE DIDN'T KNOW AND WOULD HAVE TO LOOK INTO IT. HE THEN DIRECTED ME TO THE COLLISION CENTER FOR REPAIRS. THE NEXT DAY I FOUND OUT FROM A FRIEND WITH A DISCOVERY THAT HIS KEY CAN NOT BE REMOVED IN "DRIVE". WHEN I CALLED THE DEALER AGAIN HE TOLD ME THE KEY SHOULDN'T HAVE COME OUT. WHEN I QUESTIONED HIM AS TO WHY HE DIDN'T EXPLAIN THAT TO ME THE DAY BEFORE, HE TOLD ME I HAD MISUNDERSTOOD. HE WAS VERY EVASIVE WHEN I ASKED HIM WHY HE HAD NOT TOLD ME TO BRING MY CAR IN TO BE CHECKED. BASICALLY HE BLEW ME OFF. FROM THERE I INVESTIGATED ON MY OWN BY CALLING THE NTSB ON SEPTEMBER 25TH. AFTER TALKING TO A SAFETY STANDARD ENGINEER I WAS DIRECTED TO A COMPLIENCE ENGINEER. I LEARNED THAT ACCORDING TO THE FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD #114 NO CAR SHOULD BE ABLE TO REMOVE THE KEY FROM THE IGNITION UNLESS THE TRANSMISSION IS IN "PARK". I ALSO CALLED LANDROVER NORTH AMERICA. THEY HELPED EXPEDITE THE SITUATION. THE SERVICE MANAGER HERE FOUND THAT IT HAD BEEN LEFT IN THE "TRANSIT MODE" FROM DELIVERY OVERSEAS. HE SAID THE CARS ARE SUPPOSE TO BE CHECKED AT PORT AND AT THE DEALERSHIP. THEY HAD FAILED TO DO THE ROUTINE CHECK AND CHANGE THE COMPUTER OVER. IT TOOK THEM 4 WEEKS TO REPAIR MY CAR. LANDROVER OFFERRED TO INCURE THE $2500 COST. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A VERY BAD SITUATION IF MY CAR WOULD HAVE ROLLED BACK AND HIT A PERSON. I AM DISSAPOINTED IN THE LOCAL DEALER AND HOW THEY HANDLED THE SITUATION. I MADE A FORMAL COMPLAINT TO THE DEALERSHIP. AND THE NTSB HAS SHOWN MORE INTEREST THAN MY LOCAL DEALER. *AK
WHILE PULLING INTO THE DRIVEWAY THE ACCELERATOR STUCK. THE DRIVER HAD TO APPLY EXCESSIVE FORCE TO THE BRAKE PEDAL TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS UNDETERMINED. *AK *SCC *JB
SECOND OCCURRENCE OF TRANSMISSION FAILURE AFTER ONLY THREE DAYS OF DRIVING. LAND ROVER WAS TAKEN TO DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIRS ON 3 APRIL 2003 AND RETURNED TO ME ON 7 APRIL 2003. ON 10 APRIL 2003, AND 100 MILES LATER, WHILE MAKING A LEFT TURN ACROSS A BUSY, MAIN THOROUGHFARE THE TRANSMISSION FAILED LEAVING ME STOPPED ACROSS THE ENTIRE MIDDLE OF THE LANE OF FAST APPROACHING ON-COMING TRAFFIC. MY LAND ROVER WENT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP ON 10 APRIL 2003 AND REMAINS THERE TODAY 14 APRIL 2003 WHILE THE CAUSE IS RESEARCHED. VERY DANGEROUS "BROADSIDE" ACCIDENT POTENTIAL. *NLM
