WHILE DRIVING, THE ENGINE WILL CUT OFF CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO STALL OUT. THIS WAS A RESULT OF THE MAIN COMPUTER FAILING. THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED. THIS PART IS ON A NATIONAL BACK ORDER. MR THE DEALER IMPORTED A COMPUTER FROM CANADA. AFTER IT'S INSTALLATION, THE VEHICLE IS OPERATING NORMALLY. *JG
THE ENGINE CUT OUT FOR NO REASON WHILE DRIVING, CAUSING SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER BRAKES, STEERING ETC. LUCKILY, NO OTHER TRAFFIC WAS ON THE ROAD OR THERE MAY HAVE BEEN AN ACCIDENT. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THIS PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED ON THIS VEHICLE. ONE YEAR AGO, THE ENGINE STALLED WHILE DRIVING WHILE DRIVING DOWN A HILL, AND A MULTI-CAR ACCIDENT WAS NARROWLY AVOIDED AT THE BOTTOM OF THE HILL. THE DEALER CLAIMS THAT MAZDA TOLD THEM TO REPLACE THE "PCU" AT THE TIME, AND THEN CALLED ME BACK LATER TO CONFIRM THIS WAS INDEED THE FIX TO THIS REPORTED NATIONWIDE PROBLEM. OBVIOUSLY, SINCE THE PROBLEM HAS NOW RE-OCCURRED ONE YEAR LATER, MAZDA'S INITIAL FIX WAS WRONG AND MAZDA STILL DOES NOT KNOW WHAT IS CAUSING THIS PROBLEM. YOUR WEBSITE REPORTS NUMEROUS SIMILAR CONSUMER COMPLAINTS, WHICH IS DISTURBING. WHAT IS THE GOVERNMENT DOING TO PROTECT CONSUMERS? THERE SHOULD BE A FORCED RECALL. VEHICLE IS INTERMITTENTLY STALLING. AT LOW SPEEDS, UNDER 40 MPH, VEHICLE WILL STALL WHILE IN MOTION CAUSING LOSS OF POWER STEERING AND BRAKES. WHEN VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BY DEALERSHIP RESULTING IN PROBLEM HAPPENING MORE FREQUENTLY THAN BEFORE. VEHICLE TENDS TO STALL ON SLIGHT INCLINES OR DECLINES IN THE ROAD. ONE STALL NEARLY CAUSED DRIVER TO REAR END ANOTHER VEHICLE DUE TO LOSS OF POWER BRAKES. VEHICLE IS BACK AT DEALER FOR SECOND ATTEMPT AT REPAIR OF PROBLEM. DEALERSHIP HAS PROVIDED ABOVE AVERAGE CUSTOMER SERVICE WHILE HANDLING PROBLEM HOWEVER REPAIR ATTEMPT HAS ONLY MADE PROBLEM WORSE. AFTER 1ST REPAIR ATTEMPT VEHICLE STILL STALLS AND HAS BEGUN HESITATING (NEARLY STALLING) UNDER ACCELERATION. MR
VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. NO BRAKES, NO STEERING. GOING DOWNHILL 35-40 MPH. ENDED UP GOING INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC UNTIL I WRESTLED CAR BACK INTO LANE. 3RD TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED. MAZDA SOLUTIONS ARE UNACCEPTABLE. NLM
ENGINE STALLED TWICE IN 3 DAYS, ONCE WHILE I WAS SLOWING TO MAKE A TURN AND A SECOND TIME WHEN I WAS JUST COASTING WITHOUT STEPING ON THE GAS PEDAL. I WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE ENGINE OKAY RIGHT AFTERWARDS. I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR TO THE DEALER WHO SAID THERE WAS TSB FOR THIS PROBLEM. THE FIX WAS TO REPROGRAM THE COMPUTER. IF THIS IS THE CASE, WHY DON'T THEY DO A RECALL AND REPROGRAM ALL OF THE TRIBUTES IF THIS IS SUCH A WIDE SPREAD PROBLEM? I THINK THIS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION TO HAVE YOUR CAR STALL WHILE YOU ARE TURNING/STOPPING/COASTING. IF THIS DOES NOT FIX THE PROBLEM, I WILL FILE ANOTHER REPORT WITH YOU. NLM

ENGINE SHUTS DOWN, LOSE BRAKES AND STEERING, TRAVELING AT 55-60 MPH APPROACHING AND SLOWING DOWN TO MAKE A LEFT-HAND TURN AT A SLIGHTLY DOWNWARD SLOPE IN ROAD. HAD TO PUT VEHICLE IN PARK AND RESTART ENGINE. COULD HAVE TURNED IN FRONT OF ONCOMING VEHICLES AND BEEN HIT BROADSIDE DUE TO LOSS OF ALL POWER.AKE. NLM

I HAVE FIRESTONE WILDERNESS HT P235/70R16 104T M+S TIRES WHICH CAME WITH MY 2001 MAZDA TRIBUTE SUV UPON PURCHASE IN NOVEMBER OF 2000. RECENTLY, WITH 30,000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE, I NOTICED A CRACK RUNNING ALONG THE SIDE CIRCUMFERENCE OF ALL FOUR TIRES. THE CRACK RUNS ON THE SIDE OF THE TREAD WHERE I BELIEVE THE TREAD IS BONDED TO THE TIRE. I AM CONCERNED THAT THE P235 / 70R16 MODEL HAS NOT BEEN IDENTIFIED UNDER YOUR CONSUMER ADVISORY OF 1 SEPTEMBER, 2002 OR IN ANY RECALL AND MAY BE A SAFETY HAZARD. THIS TRUCK WAS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT. THE ESTIMATED SPEED OF IMPACT WAS 40 MPH STRIKING A VEHICLE WHICH WAS SITTING STILL TURNING. ANOTHER VEHICLE BEHIND HER STRUCK THE REAR OF THE TRUCK. THE TRUCK SPINNED AND POINTED IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION GOING OVER A DITCH. NEITHER FRONT AIR BAGS DEPLOYED UPON EITHER IMPACT WITH ADDITIONAL TO A TIRE BURSTING. ALL THREE VEHICLES WERE CLASSIFIED AS TOTALED. PLEASE DESCRIBE DETAILS
TRANSMISSION FEELS LIKE IT'S "SLIPPING" AT OR AROUND 45MPH. DOWN SHIFTING IS OCCURRING WHILE DRIVING AT A CONSISTENT MPH. ONCE AT 55 IT'S OKAY. *AK

OUTSIDE MIRROR ON DRIVER SIDE WILL VIBRATE AT SPEEDS OVER 50 ON THE HIGHWAYS. IN BAD WEATHER OR AT NIGHT IT IS HARD TO TELL WHO AND WHAT IS COMING UP THE SIDE OF THE CAR. THIS IS DANGEROUS CONDITION AS IT IS. MAZDA REPLACED THE MIRROR ONCE AND IT IS STILL JUST AS BAD.
THIS IS ABOUT OUR 2001 MAZDA TRIBUTE LX , 4X4, V6. OUR VIN. # [XXX], BUT YOUR SYSTEM IS NOT ACCEPTING THIS NUMBER. OUR TRIBUTE HAS STALLED MORE THAN 5 TIMES OVER THE LAST 2 YEARS. WE HAVE CALLED THE MAZDA DEALER TO ASK IF THEY HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM WITH OTHER TRIBUTES. THEY CLAIMED THEY WERE NOT AWARE OF THAT TYPE OF PROBLEM THREE OCCASIONS BETWEEN APRIL 2001 AND NOVEMBER 2001. SOMETHING WE WERE DOING WRONG. AUGUST 2002, AFTER ANOTHER STALLING EPISODE WE DECIDED IT WAS TOO DANGEROUS AND TOOK THE CAR INTO THE DEALERSHIP. THEY THEN INFORMED US THAT THEY HAD A LOT OF OTHER 2001 AND 2002 TRIBUTES WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. THEY HAD OUR TRIBUTE AT THE DEALERSHIP REPAIR SHOP FOR 63 STRAIGHT DAYS BEFORE THE MAZDA H.Q. CALLED US FROM IRVINE, CA TO TELL US THAT OUR TRIBUTE HAD BEEN REPAIRED AND THEY WERE SURE THAT IT WAS NOT GOING TO STALL AGAIN BECAUSE THEY HAD NOT HAD ANY OTHER TRIBUTES THAT WERE REPAIR FOR THE STALLING PROBLEM REPEAT THE PROBLEM. ABOUT A MONTH LATER OUR TRIBUTE AGAIN STALLED EXACTLY AS IT HAD DONE MANY TIMES BEFORE. I WAS ASKED TO COME TO THE DEALERSHIP AND TALK TO THEM ABOUT BUYING THE NEW 2003 MODEL TRIBUTE AT A REDUCED PRICE BECAUSE OF OUR TROUBLE. WHEN WE WENT TO THE DEALER TO DRIVE THE 2003 MODEL WE WERE TOLD THEY COULD NOT LET US DRIVE THE NEW MODEL BECAUSE IT WAS STALLING. HATCHBACK WAS OPENED DURING UNLOADING. WHEN TRUCK WAS LEFT ALONE WITH HATCHBACK STILL OPEN WINDOW EMPLODED WITH CAUSE UNKNOWN. TRUCK WAS PARKED AT THE TIME, AND NOTHING STRUCK THE GLASS. OWNER WAS CONCERNED BECAUSE OF AMOUNT OF SHATTERED PIECES OF GLASS, AND THE DISTANCE TEN FEET OF TRAVEL. PLEASE DESCRIBE DETAILS. *AK
WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED VEHICLE WOULD SHUT OFF, AND IN DOING SO BRAKES AND/ OR STEERING DID NOT WORK. CONTACTED DEALER, AND THE DEALER WAS AWARE OF PROBLEM, BUT ONLY HAD A TEMPORARY SOLUTION. *AK CONSUMER SMELLS FUEL INSIDE THE VEHICLE AND TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOUR TIMES, BUT THE PROBLEM WAS NOT FOUND. *YH
WHILE DRIVING AT APPROX. 45MPH, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY QUITS, MAKING IT VERY DIFFICULT TO CONTROL. AFTER MANAGING TO PULL OFF OF THE ROAD, I PUT THE VEHICLE INTO PARK, TURNED OFF THE IGNITION, THEN RESTARTED WITH NO PROBLEM. CALLED MAZDA DEALERSHIP. THEY WERE VERY AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND HAD MANY OTHER TRIBUTE OWNERS CALLING THEM WITH THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM. HIS RESPONSE WAS THAT HE WISHED HE COULD TELL ME THERE WAS A REPLACEMENT PART AVAILABLE TO FIX THE PROBLEM, BUT HONESTLY, THERE ISN'T A FIX. MAZDA HAS NOT CORRECTED THE PROBLEM. THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE ARE DRIVING THESE VEHICLES, AND MANY OF THEM HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM I HAVE JUST DESCRIBED. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD, POTENTIALLY DEADLY. BECAUSE IT RANDOMLY RE-OCCURS, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT THE DRIVING SITUATION WILL BE WHEN IT HAPPENS AGAIN. BECAUSE THERE IS NO CORRECTIVE ACTION AVAILABLE, WE ARE TOLD NOTHING CAN BE DONE, AND WE MUST CONTINUE PUTTING OUR FAMILIES AT RISK. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. MY 2001 TRIBUTE HAD A PROBLEM SHIFTING IN/OUT OF OVERDRIVE - A SHUDDERING AS IF IT COULDN'T MAKE UP IT'S MIND. 2 CALLS TO MAZDA AND 2 CALLS TO DEALER GAVE SAME RESULTS - "WHAT PROBLEM" BUT WEB SITES SAY IT IS COMMON. DEALER CLAIMS FAILURE TO CHANGE XMSN FLUID AT 22500 MAY HAVE CAUSED IT; PROBLEM HAPPENED WAY BEFORE THAT (SUMMER 2002) AND NOW (FEB 04) CONDITIONS WORSE - WON'T SHIFT. WON'T ACCELERATE. DEALER CHANGED FLUID, REPROGRAMMED PCM; SAID IT WAS FIXED, BUT IT IS STILL THE SAME. I THINK THEY ARE WAITING FOR WARRANTY TO EXPIRE. CAR IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE, BUT I HAVE TO TAKE IT BACK. THIS TREND SEEMS LIKE A "LEMON-LAW" CASE AND A LOT OF US NEED HELP, LIKE A MAZDA RECALL.*AK
AIR BAG LIGHT ON SOLID - THIS HAS OCCURRED 6 TIMES. THE DEALER REPLACED THE SEAT BELTS AND ASSEMBLIES TWICE AND THE OTHER TIMES NOT ABLE TO FIND THE PROBLEM THEY CLEARED THE CODE.
WHILE DRIVING AT 35MPH ON FLAT SURFACE AND WITH NO WARNING VEHICLE WILL SHUT OFF, AND WILL BE HARD TO START BACK UP. DEALER NOTIFIED. *AK

THE EXTERIOR DRIVER SIDE MIRROR VIBRATES TO THE POINT THAT THE REFLECTION IS BLURRY AND DISTORTED AT SPEEDS OF 50 MPH OR HIGHER. THE MIRROR HAS BEEN REPLACED BY THE DEALERSHIP BUT I STILL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. THIS CONDITION IS DANGERIOUS IN BAD WEATHER AND NEEDS TO BE FIXED. THE DEALERSHIP HAS OFFERED NO HELP IN FIXING THIS PROBLEM NOR HAS SUPPORT IN CALIFORNIA.

(RESTART OCCURS PROMPTLY.) FIVE VISITS TO DEALER SERVICE DEPT. SINCE 7/12/02 HAVE FAILED TO CORRECT PROBLEM. WHILE GOING 35-40MPH DOWN LONG HILL ENGINE QUIT. STEERING AND BRAKES FAILED. CONSUMER DOESN'T REMEMBER IF DASHBOARD LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. VEHICLE COASTED DOWN HILL WHILE STANDING ON THE BRAKES TO STOP. THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME VEHICLE EXPERIENCED THE PROBLEM. DEALER RPLACED BYPASS AIR CONTROL VAVLE DUE TO VEHICLE IDLING TOO LOW. PLEASE PROVIDE MORE INFORMATION.*AK
MAY 23, 2002 - CRUISE CONTROL STOPPED WORKING. LIGHT ON CONSOLE COMES ON BUT DOESN'T ENGAGE. JUNE 01, 2002 - LOST ALL POWER WHILE GOING APPROX 35 MPH AROUND A SLIGHT CURVE. PULLED TO THE SIDE, PUT IN NEUTRAL AND STARTED AGAIN.

ENGINE STALLS WHILE COASTING DOWNHILL. THE INCIDENT HAS OCCURRED 3 TIMES SINCE I HAVE HAD THE VEHICLE. I AM ABLE TO RESTART IT AFTER I PULL OVER. I GET THE BATTERY AND ENGINE LIGHT ON. THIS LAST TWO INCIDENTS HAVE ALMOST CAUSED ME TO BE HIT FROM BEHIND.*AK

I WAS ACCELERATING AT APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH AND VEHICLE COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN. PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND RESTARTED THE CAR IMMEDIATELY. TOOK IT TOOK THE DEALER AND THEY SAID THEY HAD SEVERAL OTHER VEHICLES BROUGHT IN WITH SAME PROBLEM. MAZDA KNOXVILLE TOLD ME THAT I WAS IN RANGE OF A CELL PHONE TOWER AND THAT IT HAD SHUT MY COMPUTER DOWN WHICH CAUSED MY VEHICLE TO STALL. THEY RESET MY COMPUTER AND SENT ME ON MY WAY SAYING I SHOULD NOT HAVE ANYMORE PROBLEMS.*AK
THIS IS THE SECOND TIME MY CAR STALLED WHILE DRIVING AT AROUND 40MPH. AGAIN I WAS GOING DOWN A HILL, AROUND A BEND JUST LIKE THE FIRST TIME. THE CAR DIES, ALL POWER GOES OUT, LEAVING ME TO TRY TO GET MY CAR TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. NO POWER STEERING, NO POWER BRAKES. THE FIRST COMPLAINT, THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE WHOLE IGNITION, THEY SAID THIS WOULD FIX THE PROBLEM. I SPOKE TO A ZONE REPRESENTATIVE ON 4/17/02, THE DAY OF THE SECOND COMPLAINT, WHO TOLD ME BACK WHEN THE FIRST PROBLEM OCCURRED, MAZDA REALLY DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM. RECENTLY, THEY DISCOVERED IT WAS A COMPUTER CHIP/SOFTWARE PROBLEM SO WHEN I CALLED IN TO THE DEALERSHIP TODAY, THEY SAID THEY KNEW OF THE PROBLEM AND THEY JUST HAD TO FIX IT. THEY HAD GOTTEN A LETTER FROM MAZDA STATING THAT THERE WERE COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS AND NOW THEY KNEW WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS. ALSO, I HAD JUST HAD A SERVICE CHECK UP PREVIOUSLY BEFORE THE FIRST PROBLEM WHEN THEY KNEW ABOUT IT THEN. SO, TODAY, THE PROBLEM HAPPENED AGAIN AND NOW, I FEEL UNSAFE DRIVING THIS VEHICLE. TRIBUTE STALLED ON ONRAMP FOR I495 AT AMERICAN LEGION BRIDGE IN VA. SPEED WAS APPROXIMATELY 30MPH. STALLING OCCURRED AS ONRAMP TURNS RIGHT AND CAR WAS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO STEER TO KEEP ON THE ROAD AND POWER BRAKES FAILED. NEARLY CAUSED AN ACCIDENT WITH TRAFFIC ON I495 TRAVELLING 60 - 70 MPH. WAS ABLE TO RESTART CAR AFTER SAFELY STEERING AND STOPPING IN GRASS. THIS CONDITION IS EXTREMLEY DANGEROUS BECAUSE OF LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL AND BRAKES.*AK

DEALER INFORMED CONSUMER OF A FAULTY RELAY IGNITION SWITCH. *AK THE CONSUMER LOST POWER STEERING AND BRAKES WHEN THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE ENGINE FAILED THREE TIMES WITHOUT WARNING WHILE THE CONSUMER WAS TRAVELING ON HIGHWAY. CAUSE FOR THE FIRST FAILURE WAS THE PCM PROBLEM AND IT WAS REPROGRAMMED AND UPDATED EEC RELAY WAS ALSO INSTALLED. *YH
WINDSHIELD WIPER ASSEMBLY - NOMINALLY REPAIRED IN 2001 RECALL - FAILED COMPLETELY & WITHOUT WARNING. SMALL PLASTIC CONNECTOR CAME APART. WIPERS WERE OPERATING, BUT LOAD WAS ONLY WATER - NO ICE OR SNOW. AS CLOSE TO A SERIOUS ACCIDENT AS I WOULD CARE TO COME BASED ON A MECHANICAL FAILURE. TALKED TO MAZDA, BUT THEY WOULD NOT ADDRESS FAILURE HISTORY OF ITEM. THEY HAVE REPLACED ASSEMBLY (AGAIN), BUT NO INDICATION THIS ONE WILL WORK ANY BETTER! *AK
VEHICLE CUT OFF ON TWO OCCASIONS WHILE DRIVING 45 MPH. DEALER CONTACTED. FEEL FREE TO PROVIDE ANY FURTHER INFORMATION.*AK

I WAS CONSTANTLY HAVING PROBLEMS STOPPING ON ICE/SNOW. IT SEEMED THAT NO MATTER HOW I BRAKED MY ABS SYSTEM WOULD ACTIVATE AND THE VEHICLE WOULD ROLL THROUGH STOP LIGHTS AND STOP SIGNS. AT FIRST I THOUGHT IT WAS THE BRAND OF TIRES THAT CAME WITH THE TRIBUTE, SO PURCHASE A NEW SET OF GOODYEAR SNOW AND MUD TIRES AFTER ONLY 12,000 AT A COST OF $300. BUT THE PROBLEM PERSISTED THE NEXT WINTER. THAT'S WHEN I DECIDED TO FINALLY TAKE IT TO MY MECHANIC AND WAS TOLD THAT THE MASTER CYLINDER CAP WAS CRACKED AND THAT MY REAR BRAKES WERE NOT BEING USED HARDLY AT ALL. NEARLY ALL OF THE BRAKING FORCE ON MY VEHICLE WAS BEING DONE BY THE FRONT BRAKES. THIS WOULD EXPLAIN WHY I WAS HAVING SUCH DIFFICULTIES STOPPING ON ICE AND SNOW. TO NO SURPRISE, MY FRONT BRAKES HAD TO BE REPLACED AT ONLY 26,000 MILES AND IT COST ME $130. I DID GET THE MASTER CYLINDER CAP REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY, BUT YOU MIGHT WANT TO WATCH THIS IN THE FUTURE. I HOPE YOU CAN SEE HOW THIS COULD CAUSE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT, ESPECIALLY IF THIS IS A PROBLEM WITH THE MANUFACTURING OF THE VEHICLE.
