THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH, THERE WAS A WARNING MESSAGE THAT APPEARED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL ADVISING THE CONTACT TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT STATED THE BRAKES BECAME UNRESPONSIVE AND ABNORMALLY TRAVELED TO THE FLOORBOARD WHEN DEPRESSED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 204,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.

ON SEPTEMBER 1ST 2013 I WENT TO LEAVE MY HOUSE. SMELT A STRONG GAS SMELL, THOUGHT POSSIBLY SOMEONE HAD SPILT A GAS TANK. START LOOKING AROUND FOR GAS COULDN'T FIND ANY AROUND MY HOUSE SO I GET IN MY CAR WHEN I DO I GET A STRONG SCENT OF GAS. I TAKE MY BACK SEAT OUT REMOVE THE COVER ON THE FUEL PUMP ON MY DRIVERS SIDE AND THEIR IT WAS A HUGE PUDDLE OF GAS IN MY BACK SEAT. AT THAT POINT I CALLED A TOW TRUCK AFRAID TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE AFRAID IT MAY CATCH ON FIRE. I TAKE IT TO THE LOCAL MERCEDES DEALER THEY HAVE TO REPLACE MY DRIVERS SIDE FUEL SENDING UNIT, AND COME TO FIND OUT MY PASSENGER SIDE FUEL SENDING UNIT HAS BURNED UP ALSO. CAR SMELLS OF GASOLINE IN THE REAR DRIVER SIDE. YOU CAN SMELL IT OUTSIDE OF THE CAR ALSO. AFTER READING THE MESSAGE BOARDS ON THIS ISSUE, IT SEEMS LIKE MB SHOULD FIX THIS ISSUE AT NO COST TO OWNERS. *TR
MY WIFE WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK WHEN SHE SMELLED A NOXIOUS GASOLINE ODOR. TOOK CAR FOR REPAIRS ON AUG 23, 2013. HAD TO REPLACE THE AUXILIARY (SENDING) PUMP AND THE CABLE HARNESS ATTACHED TO THE FUEL TANK. MERCEDES HAS HAD NUMEROUS ISSUES WITH THE FUEL TANK AND PUMP BUT THEY REFUSE TO DO A RECALL AND FIX THE PROBLEM. THIS REPAIR COST $664.18 TO FIX ITEMS THAT ARE INHERENTLY DEFECTIVE IN THE MERCEDES VEHICLES. *JB
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 MERCEDES BENZ E500. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN HE REFUELED, HE COULD SMELL STRONG GASOLINE FUMES INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WAS A LEAK ON TOP OF THE FUEL TANK AND THE TANK WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 113,000. I PURCHASED THE MERCEDES IN APRIL 2013 OF THIS YEAR AND LESS THAN 30 DAYS OF PURCHASING THE CAR I HAD MAJOR REPAIRS DONE TO THE CAR. I SLIGHTLY SMELLED FUEL VAPORS WHEN I PURCHASED THE CAR HOWEVER I THOUGHT THAT IT WAS JUST A POSSIBLE AFTER EFFECT OF ME REFUELING THE CAR. OVER THE COURSE OF TWO MONTHS THE FUMES BECAME WORSE AND WORSE AND I STAY WITH A MIGRAINE EVERYDAY. TODAY WAS UNBEARABLE AS IT IS HOT OUTSIDE AND IT IS BECOMING HARD TO CONCENTRATE AND IT FEELS LIKE MY HEAD IS ABOUT TO BURST. I AM GOING TO TAKE IT INTO THE DEALER AS THIS IS THE WORST EXPERIENCE IN MY LIFE! THE PEOPLE I PURCHASED THE CAR FROM REFUSED TO PAY FOR ANYTHING AND I WANTED TO RETURN THE CALL ALTOGETHER! I PLAN ON GOING TO THE DEALER, AND TO THE DOCTOR. *TR
I COULD SMELL FUEL LEAKS OR A STRONG ODOR OF GASOLINE BOTH INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF THEIR VEHICLE, AND AFTER REFUELING. WENT TO MB DEALERSHIP FOR TUNE UP, OIL, AND AIR FILTER CHANGE. TWO DAYS LATER THE VEHICLE STALLED ON ME DRIVING DOWN 55 SOUTHBOUND INTERSTATE AT 65MPH. I WAS IN DENSE TRAFFIC SO I TURNED ON MY EMERGENCY FLASHERS AND TRIED TO COAST THE CAR ONTO THE SHOULDER TO GET SAFELY OFF THE ROAD. SCARY SINCE TRAFFIC WAS SO DENSE BUT I MANAGED. I TRIED TO START THE CAR A FEW TIMES AND IT WOULDN'T START. AFTER 5 MINUTES IT STARTED AND I DROVE TO MY DESTINATION 2 MILES. AFTER SITTING FOR 30 MINUTES I HEADED BACK HOME 55 NORTH BOUND AT 65MPH. CONCERNED I DROVE IN THE FAR RIGHT LANE IN CASE THE VEHICLE STALLED AGAIN. IT STALLED 5 TIMES TRAVELING 25 MILES. ONCE I ARRIVED HOME THE VEHICLE REEKED OF FUEL. CALLED THE MERCEDES DEALERSHIP AND ASK IF THIS WAS A PART OF THE RECALL (CAMPAIGN NO. 2008020001) OF THE FUEL FILTER MODULE? WAS TOLD NO. I DROVE THE CAR HOPING IT WAS JUST BAD GAS OR SOMETHING AND IT STALLED AT A STOP LIGHT AND IT WAS 5+ MINUTES BEFORE IT STARTED AGAIN. I DROVE INTO THE FIRST ASE SHOP 1/2 MILES UP THE ROAD. THE SHOP CHECKED THE VEHICLE AND DETERMINED THAT THE FUEL FILTER MODULE WAS BAD AND MUST BE REPLACED. THE PART WAS ORDERED FROM THE MB DEALERSHIP AND INSTALLED. IN ADDITION A NEW FUEL PUMP WAS INSTALLED AS WELL. UPON REMOVING THE SEAT THE TECH DISCOVERED FUEL UNDER THE SEAT AND THE MATTING SOAKED. HE STATED I WAS LUCKY THE VEHICLE DID NOT CATCH ON FIRE. MB INDICATES MY MODULE WAS REPLACED IN 2008 PER THE RECALL. FIVE YEARS AND THE VEHICLE IS STILL NOT SAFE. MB REFUSES TO REIMBURSE ME FOR THE COST OF REPLACING THE MODULE. *TR
TOOK MY CAR INTO DEALERSHIP TO GET CHECKED FOR A KNOWN ISSUE IN WHICH THE RADIATOR WOULD MIX THE ENGINE COOLANT WITH TRANSMISSION FLUID. DEALER CONFIRMED I HAD THE FAULTY RADIATOR AND THAT THE TRANSMISSION FLUID HAD GLYCOL IN IT. I WAS TOLD THEY CAN NOT COVER THE REPAIRS NOR REPLACE THE PARTS AND THAT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY ALL COSTS EVEN THOUGH IT'S A KNOWN ISSUE. SO I DECIDED TO FLUSH THE FLUID OUT AND INSTALL A SEPARATE COOLER TO AVOID FLUID FROM GOING THROUGH RADIATOR IN HOPES I COULD SAVE THE TRANSMISSION FROM BEING DAMAGED BY THE CONTAMINATED FLUID SINCE I DID NOT HAVE THE FUNDS TO REPLACE THE COMPONENTS. I WAS DRIVING ON A BUSY EXPRESSWAY ALONG WITH FOUR OTHER COWORKERS WHEN MY CAR'S ENGINE OVER REVVED AND THE CAR BEGAN TO LOSE MOMENTUM. NEARLY GETTING REAR ENDED BY VEHICLES BEHIND ME, I GOT OUT OF THE LANE AND MERGED ONTO THE SHOULDER. THINKING THE CAR MAY OF HAD SOME ELECTRIC FAULT IN THE TRANSMISSION WHICH MIGHT OF CAUSED THE ISSUE, I BEGAN TO CAUTIOUSLY DRIVE THE CAR BACK TO WORK WHEN IT DID THE SAME THING AGAIN. NEXT DAY I WAS TAKING VEHICLE TO DEALERSHIP WHEN IT COMPLETELY STOPPED MOVING. THE ENGINE WOULD RUN PROPERLY, BUT WHEN PLACED IN DRIVE OR REVERSE, THE CAR WOULD NOT MOVE. TOLD DEALERSHIP MY ISSUE AND WAS TOLD THAT THE TRANSMISSION WENT OUT. THEY WOULD NOT COVER THE COSTS EVEN THOUGH IT WAS CAUSED BY EQUIPMENT FAILURE, SO I PAID ALL THE COST OUT OF POCKET IN ORDER TO GET VEHICLE BACK UP AND RUNNING SINCE IT IS MY ONLY CAR. AFTER TALKING WITH SERVICE MANAGER AT DEALER AND THEIR TECH'S, THEY HAVE KNOWN ABOUT THE ISSUE SPECIFICALLY WITH MY VEHICLES YEAR AND THAT IT IS NOT A RECALL NOR SOMETHING THE DEALER CAN COVER. THIS ISSUE NEARLY CAUSED ME TO HAVE AN ACCIDENT THREE TIMES AND IT IS AN ISSUE THAT THE DEALER MUST TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR AND COVER AT NO COST TO OWNER SINCE THEY HAVE KNOWN ABOUT THE ISSUE. *TR

THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED NUMEROUS TIMES IN ORDER TO STOP THE VEHICLE. IN ADDITION, THE GEAR SHIFTER BECAME STUCK IN PARK. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER, WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE ABS PUMP UNIT FAILED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 05V133000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC). THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 137,714.
I WAS DRIVING THE CAR AT AROUND 30 MPH ,WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE DASHBOARD TURNED RED . I HIT THE BRAKE PEDAL ALL THE WAY DOWN BUT THE CAR WOULD NOT BRAKE TO SLOW DOWN . FORTUNATELY I WAS ABLE TO TURN INTO A MEIJER SHOPPING CENTER WITHOUT HITTING ANY ONE OR ANYTHING. I KEPT DRIVING IN CIRCLE TILL THE CAR SLOWED DOWN ENOUGH FOR ME TO PUT IN PARK GEAR. IT WAS NOT FOR THE EMPTY PARKING LOT I WOULD HAVE BEEN HURT OR HURT SOMEONE OR BOTH. THE CAR HAD SIMILAR FAILURE FEW MONTHS AGO.THE DEALERSHIP SAID THEY REPLACED THE FAILED PART AT NO COST TO ME .I AM SHOCKED TO FIND OUT IT FAILED AGAIN. THIS MATTER HAS TO BE INVESTIGATED. *TR

ON JUNE 6, 2013, WHILE BRAKING ON APPROACHING INTERSECTION, BRAKES FAILED AND TRANSMISSION LOCKED. MERCEDES CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE TOWED VEHICLE TO DEALER, M-B GREENWAY, HOUSTON, TX, WHERE THE SERVICE ADVISOR EXPLAINED THAT THE PRESSURE RESERVOIR OF THE SENSOTRONIC BRAKE UNIT HAD FAILED AND MUST BE REPLACED AT A COST OF $1,350. I COMPLAINED THAT THE SBC UNIT WAS THE SUBJECT OF NHTSA SAFETY RECALL 05V0133 AND TWO MBUSA RECALL CAMPAIGNS (2005070007 AND 2005110001) RESULTING IN THE EXTENSION OF THE ORIGINAL WARRANTY TO 10 YEARS WITH NO MILEAGE LIMITATION. THE DEALER REFUSED TO HONOR THE WARRANTY OR REPLACE THE ENTIRE SBC UNIT, BECAUSE THE ELECTRONIC DIAGNOSTIC CODE REQUIRED BY MB USA, LLC FOR A DEALER TO FILE A WARRANTY CLAIM UNDER THE NHTSA 05V033 CAMPAIGN DID NOT APPEAR ON THE DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT. I PAID THE DISPUTED $1,350 CHARGE AND DROVE THE CAR ABOUT 6 MILES ON JUNE 6, 2013, AND THE BRAKES AGAIN FAILED AND THE TRANSMISSION LOCKED. MERCEDES CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE TOWED IT BACK TO M-B GREENWEAY, WHERE THE SERVICE STATED THE ENTIRE SBC UNIT HAD FAILED AND MUST BE REPLACED AT A COST OF $2,030. I COMPLAINED THAT THE REPLACEMENT WAS MANDATED AT NO COST BY NHTSA 05V0133, BUT SHE SAID MB USA LLC WOULD ALLOW THE DEALER TO HONOR THE SBC WARRANTY BECAUSE THE CAR WAS "DRIVEN OUT OF THE SHOP." SHE ALSO REFUSED TO CREDIT THE $1,350 CHARGE I PAID FOR THE SBC PRESSURE RESERVOIR REPLACEMENT, BUT OFFERED TO "DISCOUNT" THE REPLACEMENT OF THE ENTIRE SBC UNIT TO "$1,799." *TR

THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED THAT THE FUEL PUMP NECK AND THE FUEL PUMP SENDING UNIT FAILED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 97,000.
WE PURCHASED OUR USED VEHICLE IN MAY, 2013 AND HAVE FOUND THE GAS SMELL PROBLEM TO GROW INCREASINGLY WORSE. ESPECIALLY INITIALLY WHEN THE TANK IS COMPLETELY FILLED, IT IS VERY STRONG BOTH OUTSIDE AND INSIDE. *TR

AFTER FILLING FUEL TANK AND PARKING CAR IN GARAGE, I NOTICED A STRONG FUEL ODOR. *TR
FIRST INCIDENT, BRAKES! VISIT WORKSHOP! MESSAGE WAS ILLUMINATED ON THE INFORMATION SYSTEM. TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND VEHICLE WAS DIAGNOSED WITH SBC PUMP FAILURE. DEALER REPLACED PART UNDER EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR THIS PART BECAUSE IT HAS A KNOWN DEFECT. SECOND INCIDENT, ON APRIL 25, 2013, ONE DAY AFTER I TOOK MY CAR FROM THE DEALER, STOP!, REDUCED BRAKE POWER, ESP MALFUNCTION MESSAGE APPEARED. I STOPPED THE CAR AND HAD IT TOWED TO THE DEALER. DEALER REPLACED THE PART AGAIN STATING THAT THEY ONLY HAVE RE-MANUFACTURED ONES AND THE ONE I HAD GOT WAS A BAD RE-MANUFACTURED PART. DEALER REPLACED PART AGAIN. THIRD INCIDENT, ON MAY 1 2013, 5 DAYS AFTER I PICKED UP MY CAR STOP!, REDUCED BRAKE POWER AND ESP MALFUNCTION LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN WHEN I WAS PULLING INTO A GARAGE AT A HOTEL. I CAME CLOSE TO HITTING THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME THAT WAS TAKING A TICKET TO GET INTO THE GARAGE. I DON'T KNOW WHAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED IF I WAS GOING FASTER THAN I WAS. THE BRAKE WILL NOT WORK AT ALL ONCE THESE MESSAGES APPEAR. *TR

RECENTLY, MY 2003 E320 MERCEDES BENZ CONTINUE TO PRODUCE A VERY STRONG ODOR OF GASOLINE IMMEDIATELY AFTER FILL UP. I CHECKED THE CAR SURROUNDING FOR ANY AVAILABLE LEAK BUT I COULD NOT FIND ANY. CAR IS USED ONLY FOR WORK AND MOSTLY HIGHWAY DRIVING FOR APPOINTMENTS. AT 70,000 MILES THE TRANSMISSION WENT OUT ON THE E320. AN INVESTIGATION REVELED THAT A VALVE HAD FAILED IN THE RADIATOR CAUSING COOLANT FROM THE ENGINE TO MIX IN WITH THE TRANSMISSION FLUID WHICH IN TURN BURNT OUT PARTS IN THE TRANSMISSION. ALSO THERE IS HESITATION WHEN STEPPING ON THE GAS PEDAL THE CAR SOMETIMES SPUTTERS TO SHUT OFF WHEN STOPPING. *TR

VEHICLE WAS BOUGHT ON 3/19/13 FROM A USED CAR DEALER. ON 3/22/13 TANK WAS FILLED AND STRONG GAS SMELL WAS NOTICED WHEN PARKED IN GARAGE. HAD MECHANIC REPLACE BOTH SENDING UNITS ON TOP OF TANK ON 4/5/13. THE PROBLEM WITH SMELL STILL EXISTS EVERYTIME TANK IS FILLED, AND SEEMS TO BE CONCENTRATED BY THE LEFT REAR WHEEL WELL. WE ARE VERY CONCERNED, AND ARE CONVINCED THAT THERE IS A DEFECT WITH THE FUEL TANK, WHICH IS MOST DEFINITELY A SAFETY ISSUE. *TR
VEHICLE SUDDENLY SHOWED BRAKE REDUCE "REQUIRE LONGER BRAKING DISTANCE". I HAD THE SAME ISSUE BEFORE BUT I DID NOT PAY SPECIAL ATTENTION OF IT BECAUSE I THOUGHT IT WOULD JUST BE A BRAKE PAD REPLACEMENT INDICATOR. UNTIL I SENT THE CAR IN AT THE DEALER FOR SERVICE, THEY TOLD ME THAT IT WAS AN ISSUE RELATED TO THE SBC UNIT. LATER, I FOUND IT ONLINE THAT IT WAS A COMMON KNOWN ISSUE FOR 2003-2005 MODEL. THIS COULD BE VERY DANGEROUS FOR PEOPLE WHO WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE ON FREEWAY IF SOMETHING LIKE THIS HAPPENED. I CALLED THE MANUFACTURE AND ALL THEY SAID WAS THE UNIT WOULD ONLY BE COVERED WITHIN A 10 YEAR PERIOD AND THEY DID NOT HAVE ANY OTHER SOLUTION PROVIDED. *TR
FUEL FUMES WERE DETECTED DURING ROUTINE MAINTENANCE AT AN AUTHORIZED MERCEDES BENZ REPAIR FACILITY. INVESTIGATION REVEALED FUEL POOLING ON TOP OF THE FUEL FILTER WITH INTEGRATED FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR. THE ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT DEFECTIVE PART NUMBER IS 3114704094 AND HAS SINCE BEEN SUPERSEDED. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THERE WAS A LEAK DUE TO A CRACK IN THE PLASTIC ASSEMBLY. THE AUTHORIZED MERCEDES BENZ MECHANIC IDENTIFIED THE PROBLEM AS TO SIMILAR TO THE ONE THAT RESULTED IN MERCEDES BENZ VOLUNTARY EMISSIONS RECALL CAMPAIGN #2008-020001. VEHICLES INCLUDED IN THE RECALL WERE MODEL YEAR 2003-2006 E CLASS AND 2006 CLS-CLASS VEHICLES. AFTER CONTACTING MERCEDES BENZ CUSTOMER SERVICE ABOUT THE PROBLEM THEY STATED THE RECALL ONLY APPLIED TO THE AMG VERSION OF E CLASS VEHICLES AND MY VIN NUMBER WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. ON MARCH 19TH, A USA TODAY ARTICLE REPORTED THAT NHTSA WAS EXPANDING AN INVESTIGATION OF THE MERCEDES BENZ FIX TO THE RECALL PROBLEM BEYOND THE AMG VERSION OF E CLASS VEHICLES. I BELIEVE MY VEHICLE IS EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM THAT AFFECTED THE AMG VERSIONS BUT MERCEDES BENZ DOES NOT. I'D LIKE THIS COMPLAINT BE INCLUDED IN THE POPULATION OF E CLASS VEHICLES BEING REINVESTIGATION BY NHTSA WITH SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH THE FUEL FILTER WITH INTEGRATED FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR. *TR

I STARTED NOTICING THAT EVERY TIME I FILL MY GAS TANK, THERE IS AN EXTREMELY STRONG SMELL OF GAS. I PURCHASED A NEW GAS COVER BUT DIDN'T HELP. SINCE A YEAR AGO IT HAS GOTTEN WORST EVERY TIME. PULLED OVER AND TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER IN MID MARCH AND WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER THAT THIS IS THE SBC PUMP THAT FAILED WHICH WOULD HAVE BEEN COVERED BY MERCEDES BENZ UNDER SERVICE BULLETIN NO.: 484656 BUT THE WARRANTY EXPIRED ON 02/28/13 AND SINCE I WAS 15 DAYS OVER THIS WILL NOT BE COVERED. CONTACTED MERCEDES BENZ OF NA AND ASKED THEM THAT I BOUGHT THE CAR USED AND WAS NOT TOLD BY ANYONE ABOUT THIS TSB AND THEY SHOULD COVER THE REPAIRS SINCE THE PUMP ACTUALLY FAILED WHEN THE CAR STILL UNDER EXTENDED 10 YEAR WARRANTY (SERVICE BULLETIN NO.: 484656 ). THEY FLATLY REFUSED. I THAN ASKED THAT IF THIS WAS A KNOWN ISSUE THAT THE BRAKES COULD FAIL COMPLETELY THAN ITS MERCEDES DUTY TO TELL THE OWNERS EVEN IF THEY BUY USED, THE PERSON JUST KEPT QUIET. PEOPLE CAN ACTUALLY GET HURT OR DIE WHEN THIS FAILURE HAPPENS. AT THE END I WAS CHARGED $2309 FOR SOMETHING THAT WAS A KNOWN ISSUE BY MERCEDES. *TR
