I WAS TRAVELING IN THE PASSING LANE OF A HIGHWAY WHEN THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME SLAMMED ON HER BRAKES. I SLAMMED ON MY BRAKES BUT SKIDDED INTO THE BACK OF HER VEHICLE AT APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH. I WAS THRUST FORWARD AND BACK IN MY SEAT AND SUFFERED INJURIES TO MY NECK AND BACK. I WENT TO THE HOSPITAL BY AMBULANCE BECAUSE I COULD NOT MOVE FROM THE HEAD DOWN TO MY WAIST. I THOUGHT I BROKE MY NECK. THE WHOLE FRONT END OF MY CAR IS SMASHED IN AND THE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY! I HAVE TORN LIGAMENTS IN MY NECK AND NUMBING IN MY HANDS AND FEET DUE TO INJURIES. I AM DIAGNOSED WITH SPRAINED LIGAMENTS AND WHIPLASH AND LUCKILY NO BREAKS. I HAVE ADVANCED DEGENRATIVE CERVICAL DISEASE IN MY NECK WHICH NOW MAKES THE PAIN UNBEARABLE SINCE THE CRASH! IT'S ONLY BEEN SEVERAL DAYS BUT THE ISSUE OF THE AIRBAG IS REALLY BOTHERING ME! I CAN'T BELIEVE I HAVE AIRBAGS INSTALLED AND THEY DIDN'T WORK!!! WHAT GOOD ARE THEY??? *TR
IDLES, MAKES NOISES, VIBRATES, DRIVES BY ITSELF WITH OUT STOPPING DURING IDLING, DON'T SHIFT INTO GEARS PROPERLY. *TR
I WAS DRIVING TO WORK ON THE EVENING OF JANUARY 23, 2012 WHEN I TURNED THROUGH A STOP LIGHT PRESSED ON THE GAS PEDAL AND THE CAR MADE A VROOM NOISE LIKE IT WANTED TO GO BUT THERE WAS NO POWER. THE CAR NEVER DIED. I COASTED DOWN THE HILL ONTO A SIDE STREET. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO A TRANSMISSION REPAIR COMPANY. WE ENDED UP HAVING TO HAVE THE TRANSMISSION TORQUE CONVERTER REPLACED. WE WERE TOLD THAT THIS IS UNUSUALLY FOR A CAR OF THIS AGE. I CHECKED FOR RECALLS AND THERE IS NOT ONE FOR MY MAKE AND MODEL BUT THERE IS ONE FOR THE FORD FREESTAR. I AM JUST WONDERING SINCE THIS IS A FORD PRODUCT THAT THE SAME TORQUE CONVERTER COULD HAVE BEEN USED IN MY CAR. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCURY SABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH , HE EXPERIENCED A SUDDEN LOSS OF ACCELERATION POWER WITH NO WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A PRIVATE MECHANIC FOR A DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THE TRANSMISSION TORQUE CONVERTER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE BUT DID NOT OFFER ANY FURTHER ASSISTANCE SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN ANY RECALLS. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE WAS 130,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 140,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCURY SABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH, HE EXPERIENCED A SUDDEN LOSS OF MOTIVE POWER WITH NO WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE TECHNICIAN ADVISED THAT THE TRANSMISSION TORQUE CONVERTER AND TRANSMISSION SHAFT OIL PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN ANY RECALLS. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,585 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 97,200.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCURY SABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WOULD BECOME STUCK SPORADICALLY AND WOULD CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO ACCELERATE ABNORMALLY. THE CONTACT BELIEVED THE FAILURE WAS CAUSED BY THE CRUISE CONTROL BECAUSE THE FAILURE WOULD ONLY OCCUR WHEN THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE WAS DISCONNECTED. WHEN THE FAILURE WOULD OCCUR, THE CONTACT WOULD SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL TO STOP THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN INSPECTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN, BUT THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 89,000.
THE ENGINE SUDDENLY QUIT RUNNING WHILE CRUISING AT 60 MPH IN DARKNESS ON A HEAVILY TRAVELED CONGESTED 6 LANE INTERSTATE HIGHWAY. THE TIME WAS 6:50 PM AND THERE WAS NO UNUSUAL WEATHER. THE CAR SHOOK FOR A FEW SECONDS AT THE TIME OF SHUT-DOWN. I ATTRIBUTED THE SHAKE OF THE CAR TO A LOADED SEMI FLAT BED TRUCK RUNNING IN THE NEXT LANE AT APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH. WE WERE AT NORMAL SPACING BETWEEN VEHICLES. THERE WAS NEITHER CONTACT WITH THIS TRUCK NOR ANY OTHER VEHICLE. THE INCIDENT OCCURRED ON I270 NEAR BRIDGETON, MO. WE MERGED ONTO MO 340 AND CONTINUED COASTING UNTIL WE FOUND A SAFE PLACE TO PULL OVER TO CALL FOR HELP. I TRIED TO RESTART THE ENGINE SEVERAL TIMES WHILE COASTING, TO NO AVAIL. WHILE WAITING FOR HELP TO ARRIVE, I TRIED TO UNDERSTAND WHAT MAY HAVE CAUSED THE ENGINE TO QUIT RUNNING. THE FUEL TANK REGISTERED ONE-HALF FULL. I RECALLED READING IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL YEARS AGO ABOUT A FUEL SHUT-OFF RESET. I RAISED THE TRUNK LID, READILY FOUND THE RESET. THE RED BUTTON WAS UP--I PUSHED IT DOWN. I WAS ABLE TO IMMEDIATELY RESTART THE ENGINE. THE ENGINE WAS LET RUN FOR AT LEAST 10 MINUTES WITHOUT FINDING ANY PROBLEM. WE CONTINUED ON TO OUR DESTINATION ABOUT 8 MILES AWAY. THE CAR HAS BEEN DRIVEN ON 4 DAYS SINCE THEN FOR A TOTAL OF ABOUT 250 MILES, WITH NO APPARENT PROBLEM. I WRITE THIS BECAUSE I FIND IT EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TO HAVE AN ENGINE SHUT DOWN ON A VERY CONGESTED INTERSTATE HIGHWAY, AFTER DARK, WITH MOST TRAFFIC RUNNING 65 - 70 MPH. DURING THIS INCIDENT, I FEARED BEING REAR-ENDED AS THERE WAS LIMITED OPPORTUNITY TO GET OFF THE ROAD. *KB
WHILE DRIVING I EXPERIENCE ACCELERATION OF VEHICLE. I PULLED OVER ON A SIDE STREET AND INTO A PARKING LOT PUT IT IN NEUTRAL. IT CONTINUED TO REV HIGH AND SUBSEQUENTLY I TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF. WHEN I TURNED BACK ON IT CONTINUED TO REV AND I TURNED IT OFF. ON SECOND ATTEMPT OF TURNING VEHICLE ON IT BEGAN TO IDLE CORRECTLY. HAS RECURRED 5 TIMES SINCE FIRST MALFUNCTION ON OCT. 31ST. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCURY SABLE. THE CONTACT POWERED THE VEHICLE ON AND ATTEMPTED TO SHIFT GEARS WHEN THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT SHIFT. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE TRANSMISSION HAD FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 35,200.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCURY SABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD MAKE A RATTLING NOISE WHEN THE CONTACT WOULD TURN THE STEERING WHEEL. A LOCAL MECHANIC DIAGNOSED THAT THE DEFECT COULD HAVE BEEN A CLOCK SPRING DEFECT. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE MANUFACTURER DENIED ANY ASSISTANCE WITH REPAIRING THE DEFECT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 64,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 65,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCURY SABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THE VEHICLE MADE A RATTLING NOISE WHEN THE CONTACT TURNED THE STEERING WHEEL. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCURY SABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING ABOVE 60 MPH, THE VEHICLE WOULD UNEXPECTEDLY ACCELERATE WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT HAD TO APPLY EXTREME PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE PEDAL TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WOULD THEN HAVE TO BE SHUT OFF IN ORDER TO STOP THE VEHICLE FROM ACCELERATING. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE DEALER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 145,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 147,585.
DRIVING THE VEHICLE AT ABOUT 30 MPH. THE CAR ACCELERATED TO ABOUT 60 MPH AT WHICH TIME I WAS RIDING THE BRAKES THE ENTIRE TIME TILL I COULD PULL OVER. THE ENGINE GOES TO 4000 RPM WHILE IN PARK. IF RESTARTED ITS THE SAME THING. THIS WAS HAPPENING OFF AND ON. I TOOK TO GARAGE AND THEY CLEANED AND CHECKED CARBURETOR AND FUEL PUMP. IT CONTINUED AGAIN AND I FINALLY TOOK IT IN AGAIN. THIS TIME THEY CHANGES THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE. AGAIN, IT CONTINUED AGAIN AND I FINALLY TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP WHICH THEY REPLACED THE GASKET. AND AGAIN I AM STILL HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE VEHICLE. I WOULD LOVE TO SELL THIS CAR AND GET A NEW ONE, BUT I CANT AFFORD IT. I WAS HOPING TO BE ABLE TO GIVE THIS CAR TO MY 16 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER, BUT THAT IS TOTALLY OUT OF THE QUESTION AS I DO NOT FEEL THE CAR IS SAFE TO BE DRIVING. I ALSO CAN NOT AFFORD TO BE TAKING THIS VEHICLE IN THE SHOP AND PAYING FOR PARTS THAT JUST DON'T SEEM TO BE WORKING. PLEASE LOOK IN TO THIS MATTER AS I BELIEVE THEIR ARE MANY PEOPLE OUT THERE IN MY SAME SITUATION, BUT HAVE NOT TAKEN ACTION AS THEY JUST GIVE UP. THE LAST THING WE NEED IS FOR PEOPLE TO GET INJURED OR DIE FROM THIS PROBLEM. *TR
I WAS DRIVING ALONG ON A BUSY STREET AT ABOUT 2:50PM AND SUDDENLY WITHOUT ANY WARNING LIGHTS COMING ON, THE TRANSMISSION ON MY 2005 SABLE FAILED. I COULD NOT GET THE VEHICLE INTO ANY GEAR, DRIVE OR REVERSE. THE VEHICLE APPEARED TO BE LOCKED INTO NEUTRAL. I BECAME STUCK IN THE MIDDLE OF HEAVY TRAFFIC. I GOT OUT OF THE VEHICLE AND WITH THE HELP OF TWO YOUNG MEN PUSHED THE VEHICLE INTO A NEARBY PARKING LOT. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO PAT MILLIKEN FORD, REDFORD, MICH. THEY INDICATED IT WOULD TAKE TWO DAYS AT LEAST BEFORE THEY COULD ADVISE ME ON THE VEHICLE REPAIR. THE NEXT DAY THEY CALLED AND ADVISED ME THE TRANSMISSION HAD TO BE REPLACED AND IT WOULD COST $3400.00. BASED ON MY KNOWLEDGE OF THE POWERTRAIN SYSTEM IN CARS THIS ESTIMATE WAS EXCESSIVE. I SPOKE TO THE SERVICE ADVISERS IN PERSON AT THE DEALERSHIP AND LEARNED THEY ONLY HAVE TWO TRANSMISSION TECHNICIANS. IN MY OPINION IT WAS EASIER FOR THE DEALER TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION THAT TO REPAIR IT. ITS ALSO MORE PROFITABLE FOR THE DEALER. IT IS LIKELY THIS SITUATION EXIST ALL ACROSS THE USA. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO USA TRANSMISSION IN LIVONIA, MICH. AND I EXPLAINED WHAT HAD OCCURRED AS I WAS DRIVING ALONG THAT DAY. THEY IMMEDIATE TOLD ME THAT BASED ON THEIR REPAIR EXPERIENCES WITH THE FORD TAURUS AND MERCURY SABLE, THE TORQUE CONVERTER WAS MOST LIKELY THE PROBLEM. THEY INDICATED THEIR SHOP REPAIRS A LOT OF TAURUS'S AND SABLES FOR THE SAME TRANSMISSION PROBLEM THAT I EXPERIENCED. AFTER TESTING, THEY ADVISED THE TORQUE CONVERTER WAS THE PROBLEM. THE ACTUAL REPAIR COST WAS $295.00 FOR THE TORQUE CONVERTER PLUS $50.00 FOR TRANS FLUID AND $695.00 FOR LABOR, TOTAL REPAIR COST INCLUDING SALES TAX WAS $1060.00. BEFORE LEAVING THE SHOP I LOOKED AT MY TORQUE CONVERTER. THEY INDICATED THE INNER SPLINE ON THE TORQUE CONVERTER IS WEARING OUT. THIS SUDDEN FAILURE CAUSED BY THE TORQUE CONVERTER IS A SAFETY CONCERN. *TR
THE CAR IS IN DRIVE AND AS YOU'RE DRIVING ALONG THE CAR BEGINS TO ACCELERATE ON ITS OWN. WHEN THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED THE CAR IS STILL PULLING FORWARD AS IF THE GAS IS BEING APPLIED. WHEN THE BRAKE IS RELEASED THE CAR LUNGES FORWARD ON ITS OWN. I'M EXTREMELY ANGRY THAT THIS PROBLEM HAS NOT BEEN RECALLED WHEN A CAR ACCELERATES ON ITS OWN AND CARS HAVE BEEN RECALLED FOR LESS. REGARDLESS OF THE AGE OF THE CAR DO SOMETHING TO FIX OUR CARS!!!! FIX THE PROBLEM AND PUT IT ON YOUR RECALL LIST. *TR
DRIVING A 2005 MERCURY SABLE GS AT 30 MPH, TRANSMISSION COMES OUT OF DRIVE GEAR AND WILL NOT SHIFT INTO ANY GEAR BUT PARK. STUCK IN THE MIDDLE OF A MAJOR INTERSECTION FOR HOURS, NEEDED TO BE TOWED. REPAIRS INCLUDE REBUILD OF TRANSMISSION AND TORQUE CONVERTER. THERE WAS NO WARNING, LIGHTS, OR STRANGE BEHAVIOR JUST SUDDENLY OCCURRED. *TR
ENTERED INTERSTATE 81, ACCELERATED TO 65 MILES PER HOUR AND SET CRUISE CONTROL, DROVE FOR SEVERAL MINUTES WHEN FOR NO APPARENT REASON THE CAR ACCELERATED TO APP. 85 MILES PER HOUR AT WHICH TIME THE CRUISE CONTROL CEASED TO WORK. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF THERE WERE ANY OTHER REPORTS OF THIS HAPPENING. *TR
DRIVING DOWN STREET, STOPPED TO TURN, THEN ACCELERATED WHEN TRANSMISSION WENT OUT, NO WARNING SIGNS JUST WENT OUT, NO REVERSE OR FORWARD USE. SENT CAR TO REPAIR SHOP AND TOLD NO CODES SHOW UP ON COMPUTER NO SIGNS OF LEAKS OR DAMAGE TO TRANSMISSION, BAD TORQUE CONVERTER. KEEPING OLD CONVERTER AFTER HEARING OF SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH OTHER VEHICLES THAT SHARE SAME TRANSMISSION. CALLED SEVERAL TRANSMISSION SHOPS AND FORD DEALERSHIPS AND IT SEEMS TO BE A FAIRLY COMMON PROBLEM. *TR
THROTTLE WAS RANDOMLY STICKING UPON ACCELERATION; PROBLEM BECAME PROGRESSIVELY WORSE AND WAS REPRODUCIBLE AT TIMES. ON ONE OCCASION CAR WAS STOPPED VIA BRAKE AND SHIFTED INTO PARK WHILE ENGINE CONTINUED TO RUN AT 4,000 RPM. BROUGHT CAR TO DEALER ON 12/02/2010; PROBLEM WAS DIAGNOSED AND DESCRIBED AS "CRUISE CONTROL CABLE HOLDING THROTTLE OPEN." DEALER REPLACED PART WITH PART NO. YF1Z-9A825-CA. (PROBLEM WAS REPRODUCIBLE WITHOUT ANY USE OF CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM.) NO PROBLEMS WITH THROTTLE STICKING OCCURRED UNTIL APPROXIMATELY 5/20/2012 ( 95,600 MILEAGE) WHEN SAME BEHAVIOR BEGAN TO RECUR AT FREEWAY SPEEDS THOUGH WITHOUT THE CRUISE CONTROL BEING USED. *TR
APPROXIMATELY 200 MILES AFTER FACTORY DEALER TRANSMISSION SERVICE WE PULLED UP TO AN INTERSECTION TO TURN LEFT, AFTER SLOWING TO TURN THE CAR BECAME IMMOBILE AND WOULDN'T MOVE UNDER IT'S OWN POWER. THE TRANSMISSION JUST WHINED AND WOULDN'T ENGAGE. CALLED NUMEROUS TRANSMISSION SHOPS AND DEALERSHIPS DESCRIBING WHAT HAPPENED AND EVERY ONE OF THEM KNEW WHAT WAS WRONG BEFORE I HAD FINISHED ASKING MY QUESTIONS. *TR
WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A STOP, ALL FORWARD POWER WAS LOST--AS IF MY CAR HAD BEEN PLACED IN NEUTRAL. VEHICLE HAD TO BE TOWED. TRANSMISSION SHOP REPORTED THAT WORN SPLINES IN THE TORQUE CONVERTER CAUSED THE DIFFICULTY. NHTSA RECALL 12V-006 COVERS THIS EXACT SAME PROBLEM FOR MERCURY MONTEREY/FORD FREESTAR VEHICLES, AND THE TORQUE CONVERTER SHAFT IS THE SAME AS IN MY CAR, YET FORD SAYS IT IS NOT COVERED FOR MERCURY SABLE. FORD REP ENCOURAGED ME TO FILE THIS NHTSA REPORT. REPAIR COST ME APPROXIMATELY $2000 OUT OF POCKET. *TR
I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK WHEN MY CAR TOLD ME TO HAVE MY TRANSMISSION CHECKED. I TOOK IT TO THE SHOP AND THE MECHANIC TOLD ME THAT I HAVE TO HAVE MY TRANSMISSION REBUILT. THE CAR ONLY HAS 70,000 MILES ON IT, AND I BOUGHT IT WHEN IT HAD 31,000 MILES IN 2007. THE MECHANIC PROCEEDED TO INFORM ME THAT THE MAKE AND MODEL OF MY CAR HAS CONTINUOUS PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSMISSION, AND THAT HE ALONE HAD FIXED AT LEAST 10 OR 12 WITHIN THE PAST FEW MONTHS. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCURY SABLE. THE CONTACT STATES THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY BETWEEN 45-50 MPH ON NORMAL ROAD CONDITIONS. THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO SHAKE AND VIBRATE EXCESSIVELY. THE FAILURES OCCURRED THE FOLLOWING DAY AND THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHT INDICATOR ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE FAILURES OCCURRED WITHOUT WARNING. THE WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED UNTIL THE ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF. THE CONTACT WAS IN THE PROCESS OF TAKING THE VEHICLE TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR INSPECTION. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 73,000.
WHILE DRIVING AND AFTER COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT CHANGE GEARS. W/O WARNING NO PREVIOUS CAR PROBLEMS, REGULAR VEHICLE CHECK-UPS AND THE TRANSMISSION GOES OUT. I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY A TRANSMISSION REPAIR SHOP THAT IT IS THE CONVERTER. AFTER CALLING THAT SHOP AND A FORD DEALERSHIP THEY ALL HAVE HAD STORIES ABOUT THIS PIECE GOING OUT IN THE TRANSMISSION AND BASICALLY INDICATED THAT I NEED A NEW TRANSMISSION OR A REBUILT ONE. KEEP IN MIND THIS IS A 2005 MERCURY SABLE. *TR
BLOWER MOTOR FAILED, WATER LEAK ON PASSENGER CARPET. VERY COMMON ISSUE THAT FORD WILL NOT ADDRESS. SERVICE WAS DONE TO REPLACE BLOWER MOTOR, WIPER COWL, CABIN FILTER, AND RAIN HAT EXTENSION AT OWNER'S COST. PARTS REPLACED WERE SAME AS ORIGINAL SO FAILURE IS LIKELY TO OCCUR AGAIN. *TR

DEALER CONVENIENTLY LOSES THE STEERING KNUCKLE WHICH FROM MY INITIAL INVESTIGATION APPEARED TO HAVE BEEN THE CAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT(I HAVE HIGH RES. DIGITAL PHOTOS OF THE PART). THE PA STATE POLICE DEEMED THE CAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT MECHANICAL FAILURE. DRIVER WAS STIFF AND SORE WITH SERIOUS EMOTIONAL ISSUES DUE TO ACCIDENT THAT SHE HAD NO CONTROL OVER. IN ORDER TO STOP THE FAILURE, THE CONTACT HAD TO DEPRESS THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL VIGOROUSLY 3-4 TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED AND NO REPAIRS WERE PERFORMED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 140,000 AND THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 19,000.
