OCCUPANT SEAT SENSOR FAILURE IN PASSENGER SEAT, AIRBAG LIGHT COMES ON AND STOPS AIRBAG OPERATION. I SEE THAT NHTSA HAS CONTACTED BMW FOR THIS PROBLEM AND FOR THIS MODEL YEAR; HOWEVER, BMW/MINI WON'T TAKE BLAME FOR AIRBAG FAILURE. BMW TAKES IRRESPONSIBLE ATTITUDE THAT EVEN THOUGH CAR HAS ONLY 36,000 MILES, SAFETY IS MY PROBLEM, NOT THIERS. AS A SIDE NOTE, DEALER SAYS PART IS $1200 PLUS INSTALLATION AND REPROGRAMMING. MY AIR BAG LIGHT ON THE PASSENGER SIDE IS ON. MINI DEALER SAYS IT IS A BROKEN SENSOR IN THE SEAT. I CHECKED ONLINE FORUMS AND THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM LOTS OF COMPLAINTS. MINI WILL NOT CORRECT THE PROBLEM UNLESS I PAY. IT SEEMS AS IF THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND NOT AN ISOLATED CASE. I WOULD THINK BECAUSE OF THE NATURE OF THE PROBLEM THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL. *TR
PASSENGER AIRBAG LIGHT HAS BEEN ON SINCE 2013. MECHANICS TELL ME THAT IT IS A WEIGHT-SENSING MAT ON THE SEAT. MINI RECALLED 2005 MINI'S BUT THIS ONE IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS YEAR FOR THIS CAR.
WIFE WAS DRIVING HER 2005 MINI COOPER (R50) WHEN THE POWER STEERING FAILED THUS CAUSING A VERY FRIGHTENING AND POSSIBLY VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. *TR
HELLO, OVER THE PAST FEW MONTHS THE STEERING ON MY 2005 MINI COOPER CUTS OUT UNEXPECTEDLY. THE WHEEL IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO TURN WHEN THIS HAPPENS, AND IT OCCURS WITH NO WARNING. IT APPEARS THAT THE STEERING PUMP FAILS WHEN THE CAR WARMS UP. I HAVE NOTICED MANY OTHER OWNERS OF THIS MAKE AND MODEL MAKING THE SAME COMPLAINT IN ONLINE FORUMS. POWER STEERING PUMP COMES ON A SHORT TIME AFTER PARKED AND WILL NOT SHUT OFF. HAVE TO DISCONNECT BATTERY IN ORDER TO AVOID DRAINING POWER. POWER STEERING WHINE PRONOUNCED, POWER STEERING BEGINNING TO WORK INTERMITTENTLY. COMMON PROBLEM AMONG MODEL. *TR

THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE TWO AIR BAG LIGHTS ILLUMINATED STATING THAT THE AIR BAGS WERE OFF DESPITE A PASSENGER BEING IN THE SEAT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSIS AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG MAT SENSOR WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED BUT THEY OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 74,000.
POWER STEERING PUMP FAILED WHILE DRIVING. IT IS A COMBINATION ELECTRO/HYDRAULIC PUMP. ELECTRICAL BURN SMELL WAS EVIDENT. I ALMOST GOT IN AN ACCIDENT, AND LUCKILY THERE WAS NO CAR IN THE OTHER LANE OR I WOULD HAVE HIT THEM. CANADA HAS MADE BMW MINI RECALL THESE AS IT IS A COMMON PROBLEM. *TR
AFTER THE CAR WENT FOR AN OIL CHANGE, THE SEAT BELT SENSOR (BEEPER) STOPPED WORKING. MINI WOULD NOT PAY FOR THIS TO BE REPLACED. SAID IF THE SEAT BELT SENSOR WAS NOT WORKING, THE AIRBAGS MIGHT NOT DEPLOY. VERY COSTLY REPAIR (COMPUTER SYSTEM REPLACEMENT). WHILE DRIVING ON A 2 LANE 2 WAY (1 PER DIRECTION) RURAL ROAD VERY WINDY ON MY DAILY COMMUTE INTO MY OFFICE I LOST POWER STEERING. I WAS ON A STRAIGHTAWAY AND LUCKILY NOT IN A CURVE BECAUSE THE STEERING INSTANTLY BECAME TIGHT AND AT LOW SPEEDS IS ALMOST UNABLE TO STEER. I SAY ALMOST BECAUSE I I AM ABLE TO DRIVE WITH GREAT EFFORT AND ATTENTION HOWEVER ANY EVASIVE MOVEMENT FOR AN EMERGENCY MAY CAUSE ME TO BE INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT. I HAVE SEEN MIMI HAD A RECALL FOR THE EXACT ISSUE IN CANADA BUT HAS NOT HAD A RECALL IN THE USA WHILE WE ARE HAVING THE EXACT PROBLEMS. MINI ALSO CHANGED THE STEERING PUMP/FAN/WIRING IN THE 2006 MODELS WHICH IS THE LAST YEAR OF PRODUCTION ON THE EXACT MODEL I OWN. OBVIOUSLY THEY (MINI) IS AWARE AND TRIED TO FIX THE ISSUE ON THEIR END WITHOUT A RECALL.
INTERMITTENTLY ON COLD START THE POWER STEERING IS INOPERATIVE. TURNING THE CAR OFF AND THEN BACK ON AGAIN WILL USUALLY RESULT IN THE POWER STEERING BECOMING OPERATIVE AGAIN. DEALERSHIP SAYS PUMP NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. *TR
I MADE A LEFT TURN AT A LIGHT AND THE POWER STEERING QUIT WORKING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE TURN. THE STEERING BECAME VERY HEAVY AND I THOUGHT I HAD A FLAT TIRE. I PULLED OVER AND CHECKED THE FLUID AND THE LEVEL WAS CORRECT. I CONTINUED DRIVING AND THE STEERING WAS FINE. *TR

THE VEHICLE FUNCTION PROPERLY UNTIL THE FAILURE RECURRED THE FOLLOWING DAY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED BUT PROVIDED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 18,600. RETURNED BY USPS ON 4/8/2013. 2ND ATTEMPT ON 4/9/2013. *KB
INTERMITTENT POWER STEERING FAILURES WHILE CAR IS IN MOTION. ONE MINUTE POWER STEERING FUNCTIONS, NEXT MINUTE, NO PS AT ALL. POWER STEERING PUMP CONTINUES TO RUN EVEN WHEN ENGINE IS OFF AND KEY OUT OF IGNITION. AFTER RETURNING TO VEHICLE, BATTERY IS DEAD AS A RESULT OF CONTINUOUSLY RUNNING PUMP OR FAN. *TR
WHEN ACCELERATING FROM 30 TO 40 MILES AN HOUR/SHIFTING FROM 3RD TO 4TH GEAR, MY TRANSMISSION WOULD REV UP THE RPMS AND MY CAR NO LONGER ACCELERATES. IT WENT FROM ABOUT 2 TO 5.5 RPMS, EVEN AFTER I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE GAS PEDAL. ONCE IT FINALLY DOES SHIFT, IT LURCHES THE CAR FORWARD VIOLENTLY. IT TAKES A WHILE FOR THE TRANSMISSION TO START ACTING UP, BUT ONCE THE CAR IS FULLY WARMED UP, IT SEEMS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO HAVE IT NOT HAPPEN. IT'S EVEN MORE FRUSTRATING AND FRIGHTENING BECAUSE I DO ALL CITY DRIVING, WHERE I SLOW DOWN AND SPEED UP SO I AM CONSTANTLY HAVING TO GET WITHIN THE 30MPH RANGE. MY CAR STOPS ACCELERATING SO I AM AFRAID OF MY TRANSMISSION DYING IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC OR SLOWING DOWN SO MUCH THAT IS CAUSES AN ACCIDENT. MY IS OUT OF THE WARANTEE, HOWVERE IT ONLY HAS 45K MILES. WHEN I CALLED BMW/ MINI NORTH AMERICA TO DISCUSS A REMEDY BUT THEY TOLD ME THE VIN NUMBER FOR MY CAR WAS NOT ONE COVERED BY THE EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR THIS PROBLEM, WHILE MY CAR IS A 2005 WITH VERY LOW MILAGE THEY WILL NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE WHATSOEVER TO HELP ME REPLACE THE PART AS MY CARS PRODUCTION DATE IS JUNE 2005, WHICH IS PAST THE PRODUCTION DATE FOR CARS GETTING THE EXTENDED WARANTEE ON P/S PUMPS. IT SEAMS UNSCROPLOUS TO HIDE FROM RESPONSABILITY OF FAULTY PARTS, ALSO POTENTIAL SAFTY ISSUE. WHILE MY CAR MAY BE PRODUCED A FEW MONHS AFTER THE PRODUCTION DATE FROM THE CARS THEY ARE WILLING TO WARANTEE, IT APPERARS I AM SUFFERING FROM SAME ISSUES AS THE OTHERES THEY ARE WARANTEEING. -MY DEPENDENT DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH DURING IN NORMAL CONDITIONS WHEN POWER STEERING ASSIST TURNED OFF. STEERING BECAME VERY DIFFICULT AND DANGEROUS. FOLLOW-ON OCCURRENCES WERE REGULARLY REPEATED AFTER APPROXIMATELY 10 - 15 MILES. DUE TO SAFETY CONCERNS DRIVING THE VEHICLE WAS CEASED UNTIL REPAIRS MADE THEREFORE WAS UNABLE TO COMMUTE TO / FROM SCHOOL OF HIGHER EDUCATION. VEHICLE BROUGHT TO LOCAL REPAIR STATION AND A FAULTY POWER STEERING MOTOR WAS DETERMINED TO BE THE CAUSE. SUBSEQUENT REPAIRS TOTALLY 934.00 USD APPEAR TO HAVE FIXED PROBLEM. THE FACT THAT THE MANUFACTURER HAD PRIOR KNOWLEDGE OF THIS POTENTIALLY CATASTROPHIC CONDITION, AND CHOSE TO PUT MY DAUGHTER AT RISK OR HARMS WAY IS SHAMEFUL. *TR
I AM THE CURRENT OWNER OF A 2005 MINI COOPER S. I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE IN 2006 FROM MINI OF IRVINE WITH 3,000 MILES. I HAVE RECENTLY BEEN EXPERIENCING ISSUES WITH THE CVT TRANSMISSION. THE CAR JERKS WHEN CHANGING GEARS AT ANY SPEED, AS WELL AS WHEN SWITCHING FROM DRIVE TO REVERSE. I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR TO MINI OF SAN DIEGO TO BE DIAGNOSED AND HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED THAT THE TRANSMISSION NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF $8,000. THE VEHICLE CURRENTLY HAS 73,000 MILES AND FIND IT COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE THAT THE TRANSMISSION IS FAILING SO EARLY ON. *TR

I SEE BY DOING AN INTERNET SEARCH THAT THIS HAS BEEN A RECURRING PROBLEM WITH MINI COOPERS FOR QUITE SOME TIME. SEE NHTSA BULLETIN NUMBERS SI M-65-02-0 AND 720106. I FEEL THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND SHOULD BE ADDRESSED BY MINI COOPER USA RATHER THAN PAID FOR BY THE CONSUMER. *TR

WHILE TURNING INTO A SHOPPING PLAZA PARKING LOT THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP AND I WAS NOT ABLE TO CONTROL OR COMPLETE THE TURN. THANK GOD I WAS DRIVING AT A SLOW SPEED AND PEDISTRIANS WERE NOT NEAR BY. I EXPERIENCED THE SAME THING WHEN I WAS LEAVING TO RETURN HOME AND TWO MORE TIMES AFTER THAT. BUT WITH LITTLE CHILDREN AROUND THIS COULD HAVE BEEN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. IN DOING SOME RESEARCH I FIND THIS SUDDEN POWER STEERING FAILURE IS A COMMON PROBLEM ON EARLY MINI COOPERS. THE PUMP HAS BEEN RECALLED IN CANADA, BUT WHY NOT IN THE U.S.A? CAN YOU TELL ME WHY THIS IS NOT A RECALL ITEM HERE? *TR
POWER STEERING FAILED AS I WAS MAKING A RIGHT HAND TURN FROM ONE STREET TO ANOTHER. WHILE 1/2 WAY INTO THE TURN THE STEERING NO LONGER RESPONDED AND STARTED TO GO STRAIGHT INTO ONCOMING OPPOSING TRAFFIC. IT TOOK QUITE A BIT OF EFFORT TO YANK THE STEERING WHEEL AND AVOID A CRASH (MUCH MORE EFFORT THAN STEERING MY 54 CHEVY PICK UP TRUCK). HAD CAR TOWED TO BMW/MINI DEALER - DIAGNOSED AS "POWER STEERING PUMP SHORTING". COST OF REPAIRS TO REPLACE POWER STEERING PUMP (INCLUDING NEW P/S HOSES): $1977.62. *TR

AFTER DRIVING AROUND TOWN FOR 15 MINUTES POWER STEERING STOPPED WORKING AND HAD TO STRUGGLE TO TURN A CORNER. HAD TO MAKE A WIDE TURN. IF ANOTHER VEHICLE HAD BEEN APPROACHING, THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN A COLLISION. VERY DIFFICULT TO CONTROL THIS VEHICLE WHEN POWER STEERING FAILS. THIS LOSS OF POWER STEERING HAS HAPPENED FOUR TIMES WITHIN LAST TWO WEEKS. RESEARCH ON INTERNET SHOWS THIS TO BE MORE THAN A COMMON PROBLEM; IT SEEMS TO BE WIDESPREAD. THIS MUCH I DO KNOW: IT SCARED THE HELL OUT OF ME AND IS DANGEROUS. IF BMW DOESN'T VOLUNTARILY FIX THE PROBLEM, THEN THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD FORCE A RECALL ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES BEFORE SOMEONE IS SERIOUSLY INJURED OR DIES. *TR
THE POWER STEERING HAS BEEN GOING IN AND OUT FOR THE LAST THREE WEEKS. WHEN IT FIRST HAPPENED I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT 50 MPH AND THE STEERING BECAME VERY DIFFICULT. TURNING TOOK A LARGE AMOUNT OF EFFORT. AFTER ARRIVING AT HOME AND TAKING IT OUT THE NEXT DAY IT WORKED FINE AND THEN WENT OUT AGAIN WHILE GOING 35 MPH AND TRYING TO MAKE A CURVE IN THE ROAD. WE TOOK THE CAR IN FOR REPAIRS AND WAS TOLD THE POWER STEERING PUMP AND FAN WORKED FINE BUT THE POWER STEERING WAS INTERMITTENT WHEN DRIVEN. A POWER CONNECTOR FOR THE PUMP WAS REPAIRED AND THE NEXT DAY THE CAR STARTING LOSING THE POWER STEERING AGAIN. IF THIS HAPPENED AT HIGHWAY SPEED IT COULD EASILY CAUSE AN ACCIDENT AND/OR INJURIES. I'VE READ TOO MANY STORIES ONLINE FOR THIS TO BE A FAULT WITH THE DESIGN. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THERE WAS AN INVESTIGATION UNDER NHTSA ACTION NUMBER: EA11005 (STEERING) THAT COULD HAVE BEEN RELATED TO THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 67,000.

CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO CATASTROPHIC ELECTRIC POWER STEERING PUMP FAILURE. *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED WHILE DRIVING IN HEAVY, RAPIDLY MOVING TRAFFIC, THE ELECTRIC STEERING FAILED. AN INSPECTION REVEALED THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING MOTOR HAD STOPPED, QUITE LIKELY DUE TO THE FAILURE OF THE AUXILIARY FAN. THE CONSUMER WAS QUOTED A PRICE OF $ 1100 FOR THE PARTS ALONE.

DRIVING TO WORK IN THE AM. I SMELL SOMETHING IN THE CAR. WHEN I LOOK AT MY PASSENGER SIDE SEAT I SAW SMOKE. PULL OVER AND GOT A BETTER LOOK AT IT. I HAVE A HOLES IN MY CAR SEAT AND THE TWO VEST THAT I PLACE ON THE SEAT. IT APPEARS THE HEATED SEAT HAD A ELECTRICAL FAILURE. TOOK CAR TO MINI DEALER. THEY SAID IT REAL ODD THIS HAPPEN. THEY ALSO NICE TO SAY I WOULD HAVE TO PAID TO FIX IT. LOOK AT MANY SITE ON INTERNET AND SEEN BMW/MINI AND OTHER COMPANY HAVE ISSUES WITH HEATED SEATS. IT DO NOT SEEM TO ODD TO ME. I DID NOT EVEN HAD THE HEATED SEAT ON BECAUSE NO ONE WAS SEATING THERE. *TR
THE MINI COOPER WAS SITTING IN THE GARAGE. MY FAMILY NOTICED A DISTINCT BURNING SMELL. WE DID NOT KNOW WHERE IS WAS COMING FROM. THE BURNING SMELL WAS TRACED TO THE GARAGE, BUT STILL DID NOT IDENTIFY THE SOURCE. THE NEXT DAY WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN, THERE WAS NO POWER STEERING. UPON INSPECTION AND REMOVAL OF THE POWER STEERING PUMP, ALL THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS TO THE UNIT WERE MELTED. THE POWER STEERING UNIT AND THE WIRING HARNESS LEADING TO THE UNIT ARE DAMAGED AND MUST BE REPLACED. IN CONCLUSION THE UNIT DREW POWER WHILE THE CAR WAS OFF AND FRIED THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS. *TR
OCCUPANT SEAT SENSOR FAILURE IN PASSENGER SEAT, AIRBAG LIGHT COMES ON AND STOPS AIRBAG OPERATION. I BELIEVE MINI/BMW IS LIABLE FOR THIS SAFETY ISSUE AND SHOULD FIX IT UNDER RECALL. SEVERAL PASSENGERS HAVE REFUSED TO RIDE IN MY CAR FOR FEAR OF SAFETY. PART IS $1200 PLUS INSTALLATION AND REPROGRAMMING. THIS IS A VERY COMMON KNOWN ISSUE. MINI/BMW'S NEGLIGENCE ON THIS ISSUE IS ASTONISHING. *TR
