TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 NISSAN ALTIMA. HE STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT 65 MPH, THE ENGINE STALLED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHERE HE WAS ADVISED THAT THE CATALYTIC CONVERTOR WAS DEFECTIVE AND WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. HOWEVER, AFTER ADDITIONAL TESTING, THE DEALER DISCOVERED THAT THE ENGINE ALSO WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER ADVISED THAT THERE WAS AN OPEN RECALL ON THE VEHICLE (NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 03V455000: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING) HOWEVER, THE RECALL WOULD ONLY COVER A PORTION OF THE REPAIRS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 128,996
I HAD PURCHASED MY 2002 NISSAN ALTIMA FROM A PRIVATE PARTY AND HAD NOTICED IT WAS BURNING AN USUAL AMOUNT OF OIL WHEN I TOOK IT ON ITS FIRST LONG DISTANCE DRIVE A WEEK AFTER I HAD PURCHASED IT. WHEN I TOOK IT BACK TO THE PARTY I HAD PURCHASED THE VEHICLE FROM THEY TOLD ME THEY WOULD HELP RESEARCH THE ISSUE BUT COULD NOT REFUND MY MONEY. WE FOUND THIS PARTICLE MODEL HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER AND IF NOT REPAIRED IN TIME COULD AND WOULD DAMAGE THE ENGINE. WE THEN FOUND THAT MY CAR HAD BEEN FIXED AT THE 50,000 MILE RANGE AT THE DEALERSHIP FROM WHOM THE PREVIOUS PARTY HAD PURCHASED THE CAR. I CONTACTED NISSAN CORPORATE AND THEY TOLD ME I NEED TO PAY TO GET AN OIL CONSUMPTION TEST DONE TO ENSURE THAT IS WAS INDEED BURNING OIL. AFTER I PAID A HUNDRED DOLLARS TO HAVE THIS DONE THEY TOLD ME THERE WAS NOTHING THEY WOULD DO ( AT THIS TIME THE VEHICLE STILL HAD UNDER 90,000 MILES). SINCE THEN I HAVE REPLACES ANOTHER CATALYTIC CONVERTER, VALVE COVER, AND NUMEROUS GALLONS OF OIL. MY LAST VISIT TO THE SHOP I WAS TOLD I'M NOW BURN ANTIFREEZE AND I NEEDED A NEW ENGINE. *TR
HAD OIL CHANGED ON 2002 NISSAN ALTIMA SE AND NOTICE LARGE RUST SPOTS ON THE FLOOR PANELS UNDER BOTH DRIVER'S AND PASSENGER SIDE. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION, THE RUST HAD CREATED A HOLE RIGHT THROUGH THE FLOOR PANEL - LIFTING THE CARPET, I COULD SEE THE ROAD BELOW. NISSAN DEALERS SAID THAT IT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY SO THEY COULD DO NOTHING. *TR
LUCKILY ANY INCIDENTS WERE OMITTED. MY MECHANIC DISCOVER THAT THE UNDERMOUNT IN MY 2002 NISSAN ALTIMA RUSTED SO BADLY THAT I HAVE TWO HOLES IN THE CAR. THE HOLES ARE IN THE UNDER THE DRIVER SEAT AND PASSENGER SEAT. THAT IS JUST AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN. *TR
IF YOU GOOGLE 2002 NISSAN ALTIMA PROBLEMS YOU WILL SEE HUNDREDS IF NOT THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE COMPLAINING FROM ABOUT 60K TO 100K ABOUT A DESIGN FLAW OF HAVING THE PRE CATALYTIC CONVERTER TOO CLOSE TO THE EXHAUST VALVES. THE PRE-CAT WAS FOUND TO BE A PROBLEM OF BREAKING DOWN THE METALS INSIDE AND CAUSING THEM TO BE SUCKED INTO THE ENGINE AND RUINING THE PISTON RINGS AND ULTIMATELY BLOWING THE ENGINE. NISSAN HAD SAID MY CAR WAS NOT PART OF THAT RECALL BUT LOW AND BEHOLD I EXPERIENCE THE SAME SYMPTOMS. 2 QUARTS A WEEK OIL CONSUMPTION, SMOKE COMING OUT OF THE TAIL PIPE, NO HEAT UNTIL ABOUT 4K RPM. MANY CALLS AND COMPLAINTS WENT UPON DEAF EARS. WHY IS IT SO HARD FOR THEM TO SEE THAT THEY MISSED SOME ON THIS RECALL. MANY WITH THIS ENGINE LIKE SENTRA'S WITH THE 2.5 ENGINE HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. SOME HAVE REPLACED THE PRE-CAT JUST TO HAVE IT FAIL AGAIN AND RUIN THE ENGINE AFTER REPAIRS. *TR
I HAVE A 2002 NISSAN ALTIMA AND IT HAS DEVELOPED A LARGE RUST HOLE UNDER THE PASSENGER AND DRIVER SIDE FLOOR PAN. THE CAR WAS RUST PROOFED WHEN IT WAS PURCHASED NEW. IT HAS NOT BEEN IN ANY ACCIDENTS. OTHER ALTIMA OWNERS HAVE NOT HAD ANY LUCK WITH NISSAN TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM. THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM/DEFECT THAT NISSAN REFUSES TO CORRECT. *TR
AFTER READING HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE 2002 NISSAN ALTIMA 2.5 L ENGINE FAILURES, I'VE DECIDED TO WRITE. CAR BEGAN RUNNING ROUGH. MECHANIC SAID AN OXYGEN SENSOR WAS OUT, BUT WAS PROBABLY THE CAT. CONVERTER. PAID FOR BOTH, AND CAR IS STILL RUNNING ROUGH AND USING 2 QUARTS/OIL PER WEEK. MECHANIC SAID WHEN THE CAT CON WENT, IT BLEW REFUSE INTO THE ENGINE, REQUIRING A NEW ONE. I'VE JOINED THE RANKS OF THE 1000'S WHO ARE GETTING NO HELP FROM NISSAN CORP. IN RECTIFYING THIS EXPENSIVE PROBLEM. *TR
2002 NISSAN ALTIMA ENGINE HAS HOLE IN THE SIDE. I WAS TOLD THEY HAD A RECALL TO PUT A SHIED BETWEEN THE ENGINE AND THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER. I THINK THIS WAS DONE TO STOP THE HEAT FROM THE CAT. CONVERTER FROM FATIGUING THE BLOCK. WELL ON MY CAR THEY DID THE RECALL BUT IT DIDN'T WORK! I HAD TO PUT ANOTHER ENGINE IN THE CAR! I HAVE ALSO PUT A COMPLAINT IN FOR THE FLOOR BOARDS ROTTING OUT ON THE SAME CAR! NISSAN DOESN'T CARE THAT THEY HAVE BUILT CARS WITH DEFECTS!!! THESE PROBLEMS SHOULD BOTH HAVE BEEN FIXED FOR FREE!!! TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 NISSAN ALTIMA. THE CONTACT STATED THE FRAME WAS RUSTED AND PARTIALLY CORRODED FROM ROAD SALT. THE DEALER ADVISED REPLACING THE REAR BODY AND CENTER FLOORS AT THE CONTACT'S EXPENSE. THERE WERE NO RECALLS ON THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER WOULD NOT PROVIDE ANY ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 66,000. UPDATED 10/27/10. *LJ
I HAD A 2002 NISSAN ALTIMA WITH 125,000 MILES. I WAS TOLD BY NISSAN THAT MY CATALYTIC CONVERTER WAS BAD AND THERE WAS ONLY ONE QUART OF OIL IN THE ENGINE AFTER MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. THEY ADDED OIL AND I HAD TO REPLACE IT AGAIN AFTER ONLY 2 WEEKS. I CALLED THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP ABOUT THE EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION AND WAS TOLD THAT THE ONLY THING I CAN DO TO FIX THIS PROBLEM IS TO REPLACE THE ENGINE. I HAVE FOUND THAT THIS IS A HUGE PROBLEM WITH ALTIMAS. I REALLY THINK THERE NEEDS TO BE A RECALL AS THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE.
ON MY 2002 NISSAN ALTIMA, BOTH THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE FLOORBOARDS ARE ROTTED OUT. THERE ARE HOLES OVER 1 FOOT SQUARE ON EACH SIDE BELOW THE PASS AND DRIVERS FEET. THIS IS A WELL TAKEN CARE OF VEHICLE, PURCHASED NEW,WASHED EVERY MONTH (INCLUDING UNDERCARRIAGE). THE VEHICLE CAME WITH A FACTORY "UNDERCOATING", THAT IS STILL INTACT BUT NO LONGER FULLY ATTACHED TO THE STRUCTURE, IT HOLDS THE WATER AGAINST THE METAL AND ROTS IT OUT, WITHOUT THE OWNER EVER BEING ABLE TO SEE THE DAMAGE BEING DONE UNTIL ITS TOO LATE! IVE NEVER SEEN THIS, EVEN HALF AS BAD, ON ANY CAR THAT WAS TAKEN CARE OF BEFORE (AND IVE BEEN WORKING ON CARS FOR 20 YEARS!) THIS SEEMS LIKE A DESIGN FLAW BY NISSAN.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 NISSAN ALTIMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATE SPEEDS OF 50 MPH AND APPLYING THE BRAKES, THE VEHICLE STALLED. HE WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE AND MOMENTARILY, THE VEHICLE EXHIBITED HESITATION AND SLIGHT JERKING. THE VEHICLE THEN PROCEEDED AS NORMAL. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT UNDER RECALL OR WARRANTY AND REPAIRS WOULD BE AT THE OWNERS EXPENSE. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 93,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 93,100.
RE: 2002 NISSAN ALTIMA. THERE IS SEVERE RUST AND CORROSION IN SPECIFIC LOCATIONS DIRECTLY UNDER BOTH THE DRIVER AND FRONT PASSENGERS SEATS AND FLOORS. THE CORROSION APPEARS TO BE RELATED TO TWO FACTORY HOLES IN THE FLOOR, ONE ON EACH SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE CORROSION ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF OUR CAR IS LESS SEVERE: A LARGE AREA OF RUST BUT A RELATIVELY SMALL HOLE (TENNIS BALL SIZE) THROUGH THE SHEET METAL. THE DRIVERS SIDE OF THE CAR HAS A LARGE HOLE (SOCCER BALL SIZE) IN THE FLOOR. THIS IS THE ONLY MAJOR CORROSION ON THE CAR (THE "REAR SUBFRAME" ASSEMBLY WAS REPLACED IN 2006 DUE TO CORROSION UNDER A NISSAN WARRANTY PROGRAM). THE FUEL FILLER NECK IS ALSO RUSTY AND DOES NOT SEAL PROPERLY, WHICH CAN CAUSE AN ENGINE ALERT WHEN THE FUEL VAPOR SEAL LEAK REACHES THE POINT WHERE THE ALERT IS TRIGGERED. THERE IS LITTLE OR NO CORROSION IN THE WHEEL WELLS OR FENDERS. BASED ON TWO BIDS FROM AUTO BODY SHOPS IN THIS AREA, THE COST TO REPAIR THE RUST DAMAGE WILL BE BETWEEN $2500 AND $3200. I HAVE TAKEN PHOTOGRAPHS OF APPROXIMATELY FORTY ALTIMAS IN THIS AREA. ALL BUT FIVE HAVE CORROSION IN THIS SPECIFIC AREA TO VARYING DEGREES. IT IS CLEARLY NOT LIMITED TO ONLY THE CAR WE OWN. NISSAN HAS A WARRANTY PROGRAM WHICH COVERS RUST PERFORATION FOR A PERIOD OF FIVE YEARS FROM THE DATE OF MANUFACTURE. I HAVE SPOKEN TO A NUMBER OF PEOPLE AT A DEALER IN THIS AREA REGARDING THIS PROBLEM. THEY CLAIM THAT NISSAN IS AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM ON 2001 THROUGH 2005 ALTIMAS, BUT HAS CHOSEN NOT TO WARRANT IT DUE TO THE EXPENSE, PREFERRING INSTEAD TO REFUSE TO BE RESPONSIBLE. NISSAN WILL APPARENTLY TAKE THE CARS IN TRADE AND SELL THEM TO WHOLESALE AUTO OPERATIONS WHERE THEY ARE SOLD TO CUSTOMERS WHO MAY OR MAY NOT BE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 NISSAN ALTIMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED WHILE ATTEMPTING TO START THE VEHICLE, BUT THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHO PERFORMED A DIAGNOSTIC TEST LISTING THE FAILURE WITHIN THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER MANIFOLD. THE MANUFACTURER WOULD NOT ASSIST WITH THE REPAIR; BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WARRANTY EXPIRED AND IT WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 03V084000; ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING EXHAUST SYSTEM MANIFOLD HEADER MUFFLER TAIL PIPE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILES WERE 79,000.
WHILE DRIVING MY CAR THE DAY BEFORE, ENGINE SUDDENLY STOPPED ON A FIVE LANE HWY IN CENTER LANE DURING HEAVY TRAFFIC AT SPEED LIMIT OF 70MPH. MY SON AND I WERE STRANDED HELPLESS IN THE MIDST OF CARS HEADING RIGHT TOWARDS US. AN HOUR LATER GEICO SENT A TOW TO TAKE US TO THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASED MY CAR. THE STALL WAS DUE TO A RECALL ON THE ENGINE SENSOR ISSUED IN 2006. DEALER HAD DENIED RECALL MULTIPLE TIMES PRIOR BUT HAD FINALLY RECOGNIZED IT. LEFT THE CAR OVERNIGHT TO HAVE ECN REPROGRAMMED AND WAS TOLD THAT IT NEEDED DIAGNOSTIC FOR $192.14. I STATED I WANTED TO TAKE IT ELSEWHERE AND WAS CALLED THE NEXT MORNING TO COME PICK UP MY CAR. GOT THERE CAR WAS RUNNING, ASKED IF THERE HAD EVER BEEN ANY OTHER PROBLEMS WITH THIS MODEL AND TOLD NO. GOT 1/2 OF MILE AND LOUD NOISE AND LOSS OF POWER. ENGINE COMPLETELY DIED WHILE DRIVING AND LOST STEERING AND BRAKES WHILE IN TRAFFIC. TO AVOID GOING INTO NEXT LANE ONCOMING TRAFFIC, I SWERVED OTHER WAY INTO TELEPHONE POLL. ENGINE COMPLETELY DEAD SINCE THEN AND HAS BEEN PROCLAIMED AS TOTALED DUE TO LOCKED ENGINE. ENGINE QR25DE WAS TAKEN OFF SALES FLOOR IN 2006 AND I RECEIVED NO INFORMATION AT ALL. DEALER TOLD ME HE NEVER HEARD OF ANY PROBLEMS WITH MY CAR. ON RECEIPT FROM DEALER IT STATES CAR IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE BUT DEALER NEVER GAVE ME RECEIPT TO SIGN AND NEVER EVEN ELUDED TO CAR DOING SAME THING IT HAD DONE LESS THAN 24 HOURS PRIOR. SAID HE PUT OIL IN CAR AND IT STARTED UP AND WAS READY FOR ME TO PICK UP. I HAD JUST HAD OIL CHANGE AND HAD NO OIL LEAKS WHATSOEVER. MY SON IS TRAUMATIZED AND CAN'T SLEEP NIGHTS FROM FIRST INCIDENT AND I HAVE NO VEHICLE AND CAN'T GET TO DOCTOR FOR MY BACK, LEG, AND KNEE INJURY I SUFFERED IN THE CRASH. NISSAN SAYS 6 WEEKS UNTIL THEY SEND AN INSPECTOR TO SEE CAR AND I'M PAYING FOR EACH DAY IT SITS ON THE LOT OF MECHANIC. STILL HAVE NOT EVEN DISPATCHED ORDERS AND IT IS NOW 9 DAYS LATER. MY LIFE AND MY SON'S WERE KNOWINGLY PUT IN DANGER TWICE DUE TO CORP & DEALER NEGLIGENCE.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 NISSAN ALTIMA. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL MECHANIC BECAUSE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS WITHIN THE EXHAUST SYSTEM AND CATALYTIC CONVERTER, WHICH WAS RELATED TO NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 03V084000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING: EXHAUST SYSTEM: MANIFOLD/HEADER/MUFFLER/TAIL PIPE). THE CONTACT SPOKE WITH THE MANUFACTURER AND WAS TOLD THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN, BUT THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 82,590.
THERE WERE NO SIGNIFICANT EVENTS LEADING UP TO THIS FAILURE. VEHICLE HAS BEEN METICULOUSLY MAINTAINED. FAILURE WAS RECOGNIZED BY CEL P0420. CATALYTIC CONVERTERS WERE REPLACED. NOW ENGINE HAS LOST POWER AND IS EMITTING SMOKE. COOLANT AND ENGINE OIL ARE DROPPING AT INCREASING RATES REQUIRING CONSTANT ATTENTION BUT HAVE NEVER BEEN ALLOWED TO BE "DRY." NOW ENGINE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. THIS APPEARS TO BE CONSISTENT WITH MANY OTHER CLAIMS WHICH NISSAN DENIES. *TR
2002 ALTIMA NISSAN-PROBLEM WITH OIL CONSUMPTION. THERE IS 196 PAGES OF COMPLAINTS REGARDING OIL CONSUMPTIONS ON 2002 ALTIMA NISSAN WHERE THIS IS CAUSING THE ENGINE TO FAIL. THE CAR DIES AFTER DRIVING, WHICH CAN CAUSE WRECKS AND EVEN DEATHS. NISSAN IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND WILL NOT HELP WITH ANY OF THE COST TO REPAIR THE VEHICLES. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 NISSAN ALTIMA. THE CONTACT STATED TWO DAYS AFTER HE BROUGHT THE VEHICLE IT WOULD NOT START. THE CONTACT STATED HE IS HAVING THE SAME PROBLEMS AS IN THE RECALL 03V455000. THE DRIVER STATES HE CONTACTED HIS NISSAN DEALER AND THEY TOLD HIM TO BRING IN THE VEHICLE AND THEY WOULD CHECK IT AND IF IT WERE THE SAME PROBLEM THEY WOULD FIX IT FREE OF CHARGE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT NOW THEY ARE TELLING HIM HIS VEHICLE VIN IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WAS 126,100. UPDATED 04/16/10. *LJ THE CONSUMER STATED THE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR WAS FAULTY. THE CONSUMER STATED THE CRANK SHAFT POSITION SENSOR WAS REPLACED AT HIS EXPENSE ON MARCH 10,2010 AND THE NEXT DAY THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START AGAIN. UPDATED 05/17/10
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 NISSAN ALTIMA. WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT 65 MPH. THE DRIVER STATED THAT HIS VEHICLE STARTED TO LUNGE FORWARD AND THEN CUT OFF COMPLETELY. THE DRIVER PULLED OFF OF THE HIGHWAY. THE DRIVER STATED THAT THE VEHICLE RESTARTED AFTER 10 MINUTES BUT THE SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON REMAINED ILLUMINATED. THE DRIVER STATED THAT HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER BUT NOTHING WAS DONE. OCCASIONALLY HIS VEHICLE DOES NOT START IMMEDIATELY AND HE HAS TO RESTART IT WITHIN 30 MINUTES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 56,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 56,140.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH WHEN HE NOTICED THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATE ON THE INSTRUMENTAL PANEL, THEN SUDDENLY THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE WITHIN A FEW MINUTES. THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS DUE TO THE CONVERTER. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 85,000.
CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON 2/5/10, NEXT MORNING (SATURDAY) WENT OVER CAR LOOKING FOR ISSUE, FOUND LOW OIL LEVEL IN ENGINE, ADDED OIL, MONDAY SCHEDULED WITH DEALER FOR SOONEST APPOINTMENT, WEDNESDAY DEALER CHECKED OUT THE CAR. FOUND THAT THE PRE-CATALYST HAD CRUMBLED INTO DUST WHICH WAS PULLED IN TO THE ENGINE. ENGINE IS RUINED AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. HAVE CONTACTED NISSAN AND THEY WILL DO NOTHING. RECALL DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM COMPLETELY - I BELIEVE IT WAS C THAT THE PROBLEM WAS NOT REALLY FIXED, JUST DELAYED. UNDERSTAND THAT THE CATALYTIC WARRANTY WAS 80,000 MILES, BUT SHOULD A CATALYTIC BREAKDOWN ACTUALLY BE ABLE TO RUIN THE ENGINE? IF NISSAN KNEW IT DID NOT TOTALLY RESOLVE THE ISSUE, THEY SHOULD HAVE NOTIFIED OWNERS TO REPLACE THE CATALYTIC AT XX MILES, OR AT XX YEARS. NEVER HEARD OF THIS WITH ANY OTHER VEHICLE THAT THE CATALYTIC FAILURE CAN RUIN THE ENGINE. NOW RATHER THAN $700 OR $800 FOR THE CATALYTIC, FACING THAT PLUS ANOTHER ENGINE (ESTIMATE $3000 TO $4000) FOR A USED, SALVAGE ENGINE. BUT THEN WOULD STILL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM WAITING TO HAPPEN AGAIN. RECALL STATES THAT THIS CAN RESULT IN ENGINE FIRE. I BELIEVE IT IS FAULTY DESIGN. *TR

THE LATEST PROBLEM WITH MY NISSAN ALTIMA OCCURRED YESTERDAY. IT WOULD NOT START AFTER EXTREME COLD. THIS IS THE LAST IN AN ONGOING SAGA OF PROBLEMS WITH THIS VEHICLE. WE FAIL TO GET NOTIFICATIONS OF RECALLS FROM THE MANUFACTURER. IF SOMETHING FAILS TO WORK, IT IS ALWAYS OUR FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY UNLESS IT IS A VERY MINOR REPAIR. THE DAY AFTER THE SALE THERE WAS NO BEAM FOR A HEADLIGHT. NOW WE SEE HEADLIGHTS FALL UNDER THE RECALL. MAYBE WE SHOULD HAVE KNOWN WE HAD A LEMON. STILL THE END WAS I PAID AND THEY DID NOT RETURN MY MONEY. WE HAVE HAD TO HAVE THE AIR COMPRESSOR REPLACED NOT ONCE BUT 3 DIFFERENT TIMES TO GET AIR CONDITIONING IN THE CAR. NOW TODAY THE CALL I GET SAYS THIS, THE "ENGINE IS SHOT" EXPECT TO PAY IN EXCESS OF $4900 TO GET IT FIXED. I WENT THROUGH THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION WEBSITE WHICH CLEARLY STATES THAT THIS IS A MANUFACTURING DEFECT AND IT NEEDS TO BE RECTIFIED BY NISSAN. NISSAN HAS ALSO TAKEN RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE SAME AND HENCE RELEASED THE RECALL CAMPAIGN BULLETIN. VEHICLE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. TOOK CAR IN TO GARAGE AND CODE READS CATALYTIC CONVERTER. CONVERTER WAS REPLACED, DROVE CAR HOME AND ENGINE WAS MAKING A TICKING NOISE. BROUGHT CAR IN TO DEALERSHIP ON SEPT. 30, 2009. DEALERSHIP SAID I NEEDED NEW TIMING CHAIN TO GET THE NOISE IN ENGINE TO STOP. TIMING CHAIN REPLACED, AND SAME NOISE STILL EXISTED. DEALERSHIP HAD MY CAR FOR 2 WEEKS AND IN THE END THEY SAID THEY CALLED A TECHNICAL SERVICE LINE FOR HELP AND AN REPRESENTATIVE SAID THAT THEY HAD REPORTS OF A SIMILAR NOISE AND THAT I WOULD NEED A NEW ENGINE. THIS DIAGNOSES WAS MADE OVER THE PHONE FROM A DESCRIPTION GIVEN BY THE TECHNICIAN TO THE SERVICE REP. ON THE PHONE. I CALLED NISSAN CONSUMER AFFAIRS TO EXPLAIN THIS AND WAS ASSIGNED A REP. WHOM DIDN'T GET IN CONTACT WITH ME FOR 10 DAYS. HE SAID HE CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP AND THAT I NEEDED A NEW ENGINE. HE EXPLAINED THAT NISSAN WOULD NOT PROVIDE A REPLACEMENT ENGINE SINCE IT IS OUT OF WARRANTY. I EXPLAINED THAT THE DEALERSHIP TECHNICIANS SAID THAT THERE COULD BE PARTICLES IN THE CYLINDER AND THAT IS AN ENGINE DEFECT. THE REP ONLY OFFERED A MASTER TECHNICIAN TO INSPECT THE CAR AND WAS NOT SURE WHEN THAT WOULD HAPPEN. I INVESTIGATED A RECALL THAT SHOWS WAS COMPLETED ON MY CAR, BUT IT DESCRIBES EXACTLY WHAT IS CURRENTLY HAPPENING WITH MY ENGINE. I FEEL THAT NISSAN SHOULD REPLACE MY ENGINE AS THE FAULTY ENGINE ISSUE WAS LISTED IN AN ENGINE CAMPAIGN RECALL. I AM IN NO WAY TO BLAME FOR PARTICLES ENTERING INTO THE CYLINDER OR A SCREW AS THE TECH'S DESCRIBED AS A POSSIBILITY. I SHOULD NOT BE OUT OF A VEHICLE DUE TO A FAULTY ENGINE, ESPECIALLY ONE THAT WAS LISTED IN AN ENGINE RECALL. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT MY RECOURSE IS IN THIS SITUATION TO GET MY ENGINE ISSUE COVERED UNDER THE CAMPAIGN OR HAVE NISSAN PLACE A REPLACEMENT ENGINE IN MY VEHICLE. I JUST WANT TO LET SOMEONE KNOW THAT I TRAVEL BACK IN FORTH TO WORK EVERY WEEK AND THERE WERE MAJOR BUMPS IN THE ROAD AND IT TORE UP MY TIRES. I PAY A LOT OF MONEY FOR MY TIRES AND I HAD TO REPLACE THEM WHICH COSTS ME ALOT OF MONEY AND NOT ONLY THAT MY RIMS ARE BENT UP . AFTER CONFRONTING THEM WITH THE FACT IT IS A KNOWN DEFECT IN THAT MODEL CAR THEY STILL INSISTED THEY CANNOT HELP US. IF ENGINE SEIZES WHILE DRIVING IT WILL MOSTLY LIKE CAUSE A DANGEROUS SITUATION. AS I WAS DRIVING UP A HILL, I HEARD A LOUD POPPING NOISE. INSTANTLY I NOTICED MY TEMPERATURE GAUGE SHOOT UP AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TURNED ON. I PARKED MY CAR AND JUST FIGURED THAT IT HAD OVERHEATED. I ADDED MORE WATER TO THE RADIATOR AND KEPT DRIVING. 2 MINUTES LATER IT WAS ALL THE WAY HOT AGAIN. I HAD MY CAR TOWED HOME AT WHICH POINT I INSPECTED THE RADIATOR AND DISCOVERED A 4 INCH HORIZONTAL CRACK IN THE PLASTIC HEAD OF THE RADIATOR DIRECTLY ACROSS FROM THE HOSE MOUNT. I COULD NOT BELIEVE THAT PLASTIC COULD CRACK LIKE THIS. I HAVE SEEN CRACKS IN PLASTIC ALONG SEAMS, BUT THERE WAS NO SEAM HERE. I JUST COULD NOT BELIEVE THAT THIS CRACK COULD HAPPEN THIS WAY. THIS MUST BE SOME SORT OF A DEFECT BECAUSE THIS WAS UNBELIEVABLE. I WENT ON TO PURCHASE A NEW RADIATOR PLUS HOSES AND ANTIFREEZE FROM THE AUTO PARTS STORE FOR A TOTAL OF $250, PLUS I WILL NOW HAVE TO TAKE 3 HOURS OUT OF MY DAY TO REPLACE THE RADIATOR. I DO ALL MY OWN WORK ON THE CAR AND TAKE GREAT CARE OF IT. I FIX ANY SMALL PROBLEMS RIGHT AWAY TO PREVENT LARGER PROBLEMS, SUCH AS THIS ONE, FROM HAPPENING. *TR
