MY NISSAN ALTIMA WOULD NOT START DUE TO THE STEERING LOCK. I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE WITH NO CELL SERVICE. IT WAS THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT SO I WAITED IN MY CAR UNTIL MORNING. I THEN WALKED 5 MILES TO THE NEAREST CONVENIENCE STORE TO CALL AAA. ONCE I GOT MY CAR TOWED HOME, I CALLED NISSAN & DESPITE ALL OF THE SAME COMPLAINTS AS MINE, NISSAN WOULD NOT COVER THE PART EVEN THOUGH I COULD HAVE DIED THAT NIGHT. THE PART IS OVER 500 DOLLARS & I CANNOT AFFORD THAT. PLEASE HELP ME!
I STARTED MY CAR AS USUAL TO RUN SOME ERRANDS. IT STARTED FINE. I STOPPED AT THE GAS STATION AND SHUT OFF THE CAR. IT WOULD NOT START AGAIN. IT WAS FREEZING COLD. MY CAR WAS BLOCKING THE GAS PUMP AND IT COULD NOT BE MOVED. I RULED OUT THE KEY FOB BECAUSE IT STILL UNLOCKED THE DOORS. I INSERTED THE KEY FOB IN THE EMERGENCY SOCKET THAT IS SUPPOSED TO START THE CAR IN CASE THE BATTERY IN THE KEY FOB DIES. STILL NOTHING. I HAD MY BROTHER BRING ME A NEW BATTERY FOR THE KEY FOB. STILL NOTHING. HE TOOK ME HOME. I HAD TO LEAVE THE CAR THERE. AFTER SOME INTERNET RESEARCH, MANY MANY OTHERS WITH NISSANS WERE HAVING THE SAME ISSUES. THE CULPRIT IS THE ELECTRONIC STEERING LOCK MODULE. IT LOCKS THE STEERING WHEEL AND YOU CANNOT START THE CAR WHEN IT IS LOCKED. I WENT BACK TO THE CAR TORE THE PANEL APART AND LOCATED THE STEERING LOCK. THE RESEARCH I DID SAID THAT SOMETIMES YOU COULD GET IT TO RELEASE THE LOCK PIN IF YOU TAP ON IT WITH HAMMER. SO I STEPPED ON THE BRAKE WHILE HOLDING IN THE START BUTTON AND TAPPING ON THE STEERING LOCK MODULE. AFTER 20 MINUTES OF BANGING ON THE MODULE IT DISENGAGED ENOUGH TO START THE CAR. I DROVE IT HOME AND SHUT IT OFF. IT WON'T START AGAIN. NISSAN SAYS THE WARRANTY RAN OUT JAN. 1ST, 2016. THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL. THE DEALERSHIP QUOTED ME A PRICE OF $679.51 JUST FOR THE PART NOT INCLUDING LABOR. THAT IS RIDICULOUS! WHAT IF I WERE SOMEWHERE REMOTE AND THE CAR WOULD NOT START? I COULD HAVE FROZE TO DEATH. PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS ISSUE AS IT SEEMS TO HAVE HAPPENED TO 1000S OF PEOPLE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 NISSAN ALTIMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE STEERING WHEEL SEIZED WITH NO WARNING AND THE VEHICLE WAS UNABLE TO BE DRIVEN DUE TO THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR FURTHER INSPECTION AND DIAGNOSIS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
THE STEERING LOCK FAILED WITHOUT WARNING,LEAVING ME STRANDED.THE ONLY WAY TO FIX IT WAS TO HAVE THE CAR TOED TO A DEALER. THE PRICE OF THE PART WAS VERY HIGH AND THE LABOR WAS VERY HIGH ALSO.NISSAN IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND DID NOT SEND A NOTIFICATION TO ME ABOUT THE PROBLEM. THIS LEFT ME STRANDED AND ALSO LEFT ME WITH THE BILL. NISSAN REPLACED THE PART FOR FREE FOR AWHILE BUT STOPPED BEFORE MY CAR BROKE. I WORRY IF THERE ARE OTHER PROBLEMS THEY DID NOT NOTIFY ME ABOUT.
ON THURSDAY FEBRUARY 2, 2017 APPROXIMATELY 5:45 PM, I WAS DRIVING IN THE MIDDLE OF ON KIRKWOOD HIGHWAY IN NEWARK, DE WHICH IS 3 LANES. THE CAR BEGAN TO SHAKE AND HESITATE TO TAKE OFF. WHILE IN THE MIDDLE OF HEAVY TRAFFIC THE CAR FINALLY STOPPED ACCELERATING AND WOULD NOT MOVE. I HAD MY 3 YEAR OLD SON IN THE BACK SEAT AT THE TIME. AN PASSERBY FINALLY PULLED UP BEHIND ME AND HELPED ME PUSH MY CAR OUT OF THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY TO THE LEFT TURN LANE SO THAT I WASN'T BLOCKING THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC. AFTER ABOUT 2 HOURS, A TOW TRUCK FINALLY CAME AND TOWED THE CAR TO BENCHMARK TRANSMISSION IN NEWARK, DE. THE MECHANIC NAMED DANTE ADVISED THAT THE TRANSMISSION HAD DIED. HE ALSO NOTIFIED ME THAT THIS WAS A KNOWN RECALL ISSUED BY NISSAN SEVERAL YEARS BACK WHICH MY TRANSMISSION WAS NOW OUT OF RECALL DUE TO THE MILEAGE. MY CAR WAS IN THE NISSAN SERVICE DEPARTMENT IN NOVEMBER 2012 TO FIX THE ELECTRONIC STEERING COLUMN LOCK THAT ALSO TURNED INTO A RECALL. AT THAT TIME NISSAN HAD MY UPDATED ADDRESS AS WELL AS IT HAS BEEN CONTINUOUSLY UPDATED WITH THE DELAWARE DMV AND I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED OF ANY RECALL. THERE WAS ALSO NO INDICATION THAT ANY ISSUE WAS OCCURRING WITH THE TRANSMISSION (NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT) PRIOR TO THE INCIDENT. I WANT NISSAN TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THIS INCIDENT. THE COST OF REPAIR WILL BE IN UPWARDS OF $4,000.00
VEHICLE FAILED TO START AND VEHICLE WAS IN A VERY RISKY AREA. WE WERE AFRAID FOR OUR SAFETY AND AFRAID THAT OUR VEHICLE MIGHT BE DAMAGED BY VANDALS IN THAT AREA.
ISSUES WITH STEERING WHEEL WHICH LEADS TO THE CAR NOT TURNING ON AT ALL .
ISSUE WITH STEERING WHEEL THAT CAUSES THE CAR NOT TO TURN ON
I HAD A KNOCKING NOISE IN THE LEFT FRONT WHEEL AREA WHILE THE CARE WAS BEING DRIVEN. THE REPAIR FACILITY DIAGNOSED A STRUT BROKEN AND HAD TO REPLACE THE LEFT FRONT STRUT MODULAR ASSY AND THE RIGHT FRONT STRUT ASSY ALSO. THIS EXPENSIVE REPAIR COST $1.020.26
OUT OF NOWHERE, I PARKED MY CAR AND WHEN I WENT TO START IT, THE CAR WOULD NOT START AND THE KEY LIGHT WAS ON. I THOUGHT MY KEY BATTERY DIED AND AFTER TRYING DIFFERENT KEYS, ETC, DETERMINED THERE WAS ANOTHER ISSUE. AFTER RESEARCH, I DISCOVERED THAT IT IS A WELL-KNOWN ISSUE WITH THE STEERING LOCK. AFTER TAPPING THE UNIT BELOW THE STEERING WHEEL, I WAS ABLE TO GET IT TO LOCK AND START THE CAR. THEN, 2 DAYS LATER, IT HAPPENS AGAIN. I WAS ABLE TO TAP IT TO GET IT TO WORK AGAIN BUT THIS COULD HAPPEN AT ANY TIME IN ANY PLACE LEAVING YOU STRANDED. *TR
THIS IS BY FAR THE WORST VEHICLE I HAVE EVER PURCHASED. I HAVE REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION ONCE....IT STILL DOES NOT WORK PROPERLY AND SHIFTS SO HARD MY PASSENGERS THINK I'M SLAMMING ON THE BRAKES. AND NOW THE STEERING LOCK MODULE HAS FAILED. AFTER READING 100S OF COMPLAINTS FROM PEOPLE WITH THE SAME ISSUE, I AM APPALLED TO FIND THAT THIS IS NOT A RECALL. I WILL NEVER PURCHASE ANOTHER NISSAN NOR WILL ANYONE THAT KNOWS ME AS THEY'VE WITNESSED ALL ISSUES OCCUR WITH ZERO ACCOUNTABILITY ON NISSAN'S ACCOUNT.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 NISSAN ALTIMA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 20 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED AND DID NOT START AGAIN. THE CONTACT THOUGHT THE BATTERY DIED AND WENT TO GET JUMPER CABLES. WHEN HE RETURNED, THE VEHICLE WAS ON FIRE. THE FIRE AND POLICE DEPARTMENTS WERE PRESENT AND A REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DESTROYED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VIN WAS INVALID. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 105,000.
WHEN LEAVING WORK CAR WOULD NOT START USING THE PUSH START. AFTER CONTACTING NISSAN THEY INFORMED ME THAT IT WAS THE STEERING LOCK AND IT WAS ONLY COVERED FOR AN EXTENDED 6 YEARS AFTER ORIGINAL PURCHASE. I FEEL THAT IF THEY KNEW THAT THIS PART WAS FAULTY THEY SHOULD HAVE OFFERED A RECALL. A $1000 DOLLARS IS A LOT OF MONEY TO PAY OR REPAIRS ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY KNOW THIS PART WILL LEAVE YOU STRANDED. *TR
STEERING LOCK UNIT FAILURE, CAR WOULDN'T START AND LEFT ME STRANDED AND HAD TO BE TOWED. I UNDERSTAND THIS PART HAS HAD THOUSANDS OF FAILURES FROM ONLINE RESEARCH FOR THIS VEHICLE BUT HASN'T BEEN RECALLED
WHILE VISITING A LOCAL PARK I CAME BACK TO MY CAR TO FIND IT UNABLE TO BE STARTED. IT IS AN AUTOMATIC START AND THE KEY FOB BATTERY HAD BEEN REPLACED BUT IT WAS A FAULTY PART WITHIN THE CAR, THE ELECTRONIC STEERING COLUMN LOCK, THAT PREVENTED ME FROM BEING ABLE TO START MY CAR. I WAS LEFT STRANDED IN THIS PARK WHILE IT WAS GETTING DARK AND I WAS BY MYSELF FOR 4 HOURS BEFORE A TRUCK COULD GET TO ME.
VEHICLE WOULD NOT START AND I WAS STRANDED. MY CELL PHONE BATTERY WAS DYING AND COULD NOT RECHARGE BECAUSE THE STEERING LOCK PART MALFUNCTIONED AND WOULD NOT ALLOW CAR TO START. THIS IS A WELL KNOWN PROBLEM THAT NISSAN IS AWARE OF AND THEY WILL NOT RECALL OR REPLACE. THE VEHICLE WAS COMPLETELY DISABLED.
2009 NISSAN ALTIMA CAR WOULD NOT START. LEFT STRANDED AT WORK. HAD TO HAVE CAR TOWED TO HOME AND THEN TOWED TO DEALERSHIP. COST OF ELECTRONIC BOX IN STEERING 1100.00. THIS IS WRONG SO MANY PEOPLE ARE HAVING THIS PROBLEM. THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL. *TR
CAME OUT TO GET IN THE CAR WHICH WAS PARKED, USED THE FOB TO UNLOCK THE DOOR GOT INTO THE CAR AND NOTHING. THE BRAKE WAS HARD TO PRESS, THE STEERING WAS LOCKED, COULD NOT GO INTO ANY GEAR, THE CAR COULD NOT BE JUMPED WITH CABLES. I HAD 2 INDICATOR LIGHTS ON. I NEEDED TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED TO A NISSAN DEALER. THE DIAGNOSIS IS THE STEERING ACTUATOR. I AM BEING CHARGED ROUGHLY $1100. I DON'T YET HAVE MY DOCUMENTATION AS THE CAR IS WITH THE DEALERSHIP. THIS SOUNDS LIKE IT HAS BEEN AN ISSUE RECENTLY WITH SEVERAL 2009 NISSAN ALTIMAS. NISSAN MAY WANT TO RETHINK MAKING THIS A RECALL. I WAS LUCKY TO BE IN A PUBLIC PLACE IN THE DAYTIME.
MY DAUGHTER DROVE THE CAR TO HER HOSPITAL IN NJ AND WHEN SHE RETURNED A FEW HOURS LATER TO DRIVE BACK TO HER HOME ON LI THE CAR WOULD NOT START. THE REMOTE OPENED THE DOORS BUT THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS HARD AND CAR WOULD NOT START WHEN SHE PUSHED THE START BUTTON. I WAS TOLD THE PROBLEM IS A FAULTY ESCL. APPARENTLY THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE 2009 ALTIMA'S. I CALLED NISSAN AND WAS ASSIGNED A CASE NUMBER. DON'T KNOW IF IT WILL HELP. DEALER QUOTED ALMOST $700 JUST FOR THE PART, SAID THE PROBLEM IS SO COMMON HE KEEPS THE PART IN STOCK.
INTELLIGENT KEY WARNING LIGHT CAUSING STEERING WHEEL TO LOCK UP AND NEED TOW TO NISSAN DEALER FOR REPAIR. THERE IS NO WARNING FOR THIS MALFUNCTION.
NISSAN ALTIMA STEERING LOCK MECHANISM. THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM IN 2009 NISSAN ALTIMA. THE CAR WILL NOT START. NISSAN EXTENDED THE WARRANTY ON THIS PART FOR SOME OF ITS VEHICLES. THE PART IS DEFECTIVE AND THE RECALL SHOULD BE CONTINUED.

MY NISSAN ALTIMA 2.5 S COUPE WAS FUNCTIONING NORMALLY WITH NO ISSUES WHATSOEVER UNTIL 3 MORNINGS AGO WHEN I WAS AT HOME AND LEAVING FOR WORK. I OPENED MY CAR DOOR WITH THE PUSH-BUTTON KEY AND TURNED ON THE HEADLIGHTS WITHOUT ISSUES. WHEN I PUSHED THE START/IGNITION BUTTON NEXT TO THE STEERING WHEEL ON MY PARKED CAR, THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO RESPONSE FROM THE VEHICLE. THE ENGINE DID NOT TURNOVER OR MAKE ANY NOISE SUGGESTING IT WAS ATTEMPTING TO. I HAD DRIVEN THIS CAR 8 HOURS PRIOR AND SAW NO LIGHTS ON THE DASHBOARD OR ABNORMAL NOISES INDICATING THAT THERE WAS AN IMPENDING ISSUE. AFTER DOING MY OWN RESEARCH ON THE PROBLEM AND HAVING THE CAR EVALUATED AT A NISSAN DEALERSHIP, I DISCOVERED THAT I WAS NOT ALONE IN HAVING THIS OCCUR, AS THERE HAD BEEN OTHER NISSANS AND INFINITIS FROM THAT YEAR THAT HAVE HAD THE EXACT SAME ISSUE WITH THE ESCL (ELECTRONIC STEERING COLUMN LOCK) UNIT. NUMEROUS PEOPLE HAVE BEEN IN THE SAME SITUATION AS ME AT DIFFERENT TIMES OF THE DAY/NIGHT AND LOCATIONS. THIS POSES A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY RISK TO PEOPLE WHO OPERATE THIS CAR. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO WARNING THAT THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH THE STEERING COLUMN AND CAN HAPPEN ANYWHERE, AT ANY TIME, AND IN ANY WEATHER. LUCKILY I WAS IN A SAFE AREA AT THE TIME WHEN IT HAPPENED TO ME, BUT I FEAR FOR ANYONE ELSE THAT HAS THIS OCCUR IN AN UNSAFE LOCATION OR IN UNSAFE WEATHER CONDITIONS. I BELIEVE THAT NISSAN SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THE PROBLEMATIC CAR PART, REGARDLESS OF WHEN THE CAR WAS PURCHASED, THAT HAS OBVIOUSLY GIVEN SEVERAL PEOPLE ISSUES AND CAN LEAVE PEOPLE STRANDED SOMEWHERE WITHOUT ANY WARNING. *TR
AS I WAS LEAVING WORK ON FRIDAY NIGHT AT ABOUT 11:35PM WHEN I GOT TO MY CAR, I FOUND MYSELF STUCK IN A PARKING LOT TRYING TO TURN ON MY IGNITION. THE CAR DIDN'T GIVE ME NO WARNING AS THE DASHBOARD GAVE ME A SYMBOL OF THE WORD "KEY" DISPLAY WITH A KEY BELOW IT. I WOULD PUSH THE BRAKE AND THE START BUTTON AND THE CAR WOULD NOT MAKE A SOUND. I HAD TO GET MY CAR TOWED TO MY HOUSE IN ORDER TO REMOVE IT FROM THE PARKING LOT. AS I WAS GOING THROUGH THE MANUAL I FOUND OUT THAT IT WAS THE STEERING IGNITION LOCK THAT WAS CAUSING THIS ISSUE WITH THE IGNITION. I'M A 24 YEAR OLD PREGNANT WOMAN AND THIS IS REALLY UNSAFE. I WAS READING ONLINE AND IT SAID THAT NISSAN GAVE A 6 YEAR EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR THIS ISSUE BUT I NEVER RECEIVED A NOTICE FROM THE DEALER WHILE I WAS PAYING IT OFF AND NOW THAT THE ISSUE HAS POPPED OUT BEING 2017 THE DEALER IS TELLING ME THAT THE WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED IN 2015 AND IT WILL COST ME $1,200 TO FIX THE ISSUE. *TR
I HAD STEERING WHEEL LOCK FAILURE IN AN AREA THAT WAS UNSAFE AND I COULD NOT START MY CAR AGAIN TO DRIVE AWAY. I HAD TO CALL EMERGENCY ROAD SIDE SERVICE TO TOW MY CAR TO THE DEALER WHO REPAIRED MY CAR FOR A $900 FEE. AFTER DOING FURTHER RESEARCH I HAVE FOUND THAT HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE THAT HAVE HAD THIS CAR HAVE BEEN AFFECTED BY THIS ISSUE. NISSAN IS WELL AWARE OF THIS ISSUE AND YET HAVE FAILED TO DUE RECALLS ON THE CAR TO REPAIR THE ISSUE ONCE AND FOR ALL. I HAVE HAD 2 RECALLS ALREADY ON THIS CAR AND THIS ISSUE SHOULD BE CONSIDERED A NECESSARY RECALL AS WELL. PEOPLE COULD BE IN AREA THAT ARE NOT SAFE AND ARE UNABLE TO MOVE THEIR VEHICLE OR COULD BE IN FREEZING OR HOT WEATHER AND ARE UNABLE TO MOVE THEIR VEHICLE. THIS IS DANGEROUS. YOUR CAR BECOMES COMPLETELY DISABLED AND THIS IS AN ISSUE THAT CONTINUES TO PLAGUE THEIR CUSTOMERS. I WAS FORTUNATE THAT THIS DID NOT OCCUR UNTIL I REACHED OVER 100,000 MILES, BUT OTHER PEOPLE HAD THIS OCCUR AT A SCHOOL LOW AS 33,000. THIS REPAIR RANGES ANYWHERE FROM $900 TO $1200 TO REPAIR. NISSAN SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR REPAIRING THIS FOR THEIR CUSTOMERS AS THEY KNOW THAT THIS IS AN ISSUE WITH THIS VEHICLE FOR THE 2009 AND 2010 MODELS.
MY CAR WOULDN'T START, WITH NO WARMING OR INDICATOR. THANKFULLY, FOR MY SAFETY, IT WAS PARKED IN MY GARAGE OVERNIGHT, HOWEVER, THIS COULD BE DANGEROUS SITUATION. I LOOKED THROUGH THE MANUAL AND FOUND OUT THAT THE CAR HAS A DEFECTIVE STEERING WHEEL LOCK THAT WILL COST AROUND $1,000. THIS IS A COMMON AND KNOWN PROBLEM WHICH NISSAN IS APPARENTLY AWARE OF, SO I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO SEE THEM RECALL THIS PART.
CAME OUT OF THE STORE COULDN'T START VEHICLE ALL OF A SUDDEN, WHEEL WOULDN'T TURN, BRAKES WERE HARD TO STEP ON, "KEY" LIGHT ON! DOORS ABLE TO UNLOCK AND LOCK AND TRUNK. NOW A MONTH LATER, THANKFULLY, THIS HAPPENED AGAIN IN MY DRIVEWAY AT HOME! I COULD HAVE BEEN MURDERED OR RAPED IN THAT PARKING LOT! I AM HEARING THERE WAS A RECALL THAT WAS AMENDED IN JANUARY 2016. I DON'T HAVE OVER $10000. FOR THIS REPAIR THAT COULD HAVE TAKEN MY LIFE. I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE FOR FEAR OF BEING STRANDED AGAIN!

I WAS AT A GAS STATION IN A UNSAFE AREA (HIGH CRIME) AND MY CAR WOULD NOT START BACK UP. MY CAR WENT INTO "LOCK MODE", AFTER RESEARCH THE STEERING LOCK CAN MALFUNCTION ON THE 2009 NISSAN ALTIMA. LOOKS LIKE THE WARRANTY USED TO BE 8 YEARS AND IT WAS CHANGED TO 6 YEARS. THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN THE 8TH YEAR FOR ME. I WAS TERRIFIED BEING STUCK WITH NO RIDE. IT TOOK ME AN HOUR TO FIND SOMEONE TO PICK ME UP. I HAD TO LEAVE THE CAR OVERNIGHT. IF THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE WHY WAS THE WARRANTY SHORTENED? OR WHY IS THERE NOT A LIFETIME WARRANTY ON THIS PART? BEING STRANDED FOR AN ISSUE THAT IS THE MANUFACTURERS FAULT IS UNACCEPTABLE. I HAVE NEVER BEEN MORE SCARED IN MY LIFE THAN I WAS LAST NIGHT. I SAT IN MY CAR WAITING FOR A TOW. MY CAR WAS PARKED IN A BUSINESS LOT WHEN THIS OCCURRED. THERE WAS NO INDICATION OF ANYTHING BEING WRONG WITH THE CAR. HOWEVER WHEN I WENT TO START THE CAR IT WOULD NOT START. IT WAS NOT AN ISSUE WITH THE KEY FOB. IT WAS AN ISSUE WITH THE STERLING LOCK SYSTEM IN THE CAR. AN ISSUE THAT NISSAN SAID WAS MADE FAULTY. SO AS A RESULT, I COULD NOT START MY CAR AND WAS STRANDED. SO I HAD TO CALL A CAB TO GET HOME AND HAVE MY CAR TOWED. I UNDERSTAND THAT THINGS GO WRONG WITH CARS AND SOMETIMES IT IS BECAUSE PEOPLE PUT OFF NECESSARY REPAIRS. HOWEVER THERE WAS NO SIGN THIS WAS GOING TO HAPPEN AND NISSAN KNOWS IT'S A PROBLEM WITH THE PRODUCT THEY PUT OUT. I THANK GOD I WASN'T OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE WHEN THIS HAPPENED. AFTER MY 4.5 HR. SHIFT AT THE HOSPITAL, I WENT OUT TO START MY CAR & IT WOULDN'T START. IT SHOWED "NO KEY". I HAD BATTERY POWER BUT THE OWNER'S MANUAL SHOWED THAT THE FOB WAS NOT CONNECTING TO THE CAR. I WAS STRANDED AND IT WAS BELOW ZERO TEMPERATURES. THE NEXT DAY AFTER CHANGING THE BATTERIES IN THE FOB, MY SON BROUGHT ME TO THE CAR. STILL NO STARTING IT. WE HAD TO TOW THE CAR TO A DEALER WHO PROCEEDED TO CHARGE ME $1301 DOLLARS TO FIX. IT WAS THE "DEFECTIVE STEERING LOCK MODULE" (EXACT WORDS ON THE BILL) AND I NEEDED A NEW BATTERY EVEN THOUGH IT WAS ONLY 2 YEARS OLD. THE DEALER DIDN'T KNOW WHY MY BATTERY WAS AFFECTED BUT IT WOULD NO LONGER HOLD A CHARGE. WHEN I LOOKED ON EBAY FOR THE STEERING PART, IT WAS $350. NISSAN CHARGED ME DOUBLE. I ASKED THE DEALER WHY THE DOUBLE CHARGE, THEY SAID "WHO KNOWS, CALL NISSAN." WHEN I ASKED WHY THIS "DEFECTIVE PART" WAS NOT RECALLED, THE REPLY WAS "NISSAN OFFERED AN EXTENSION ON THE WARRANTY. YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED." THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AS THERE WAS NO WARNING OF IT'S GOING OUT AND NISSAN KNOWS ABOUT IT.

I HAD TO CALL MY WIFE TO COME WITH OUR 5 WEEK OLD INFANT IN HER CAR TO GET AAA. THE AAA GUY COULD NOT FIND WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS. THEN WE TOWED THE CAR TO THE DEALER. AND WE HAD TO WAIT FOR THE NEXT DAY TO FIND OUT THAT THE STEERING LOCK WAS BAD. AND IT WAS A KNOWN ISSUE TO NISSAN AND THEY DID NOT ISSUE A RECALL. INSTEAD NISSAN EXTENDED THE WARRANTY FOR ESCL. UNFORTUNATELY, IT WAS PAST THE WARRANTY EXTENSION. AND I HAD TO PAY OVER $1100 TO FIX SOME DEFETIVE PART. SHAME ON NISSAN. STARTED CAR WITH NO ISSUES AND DROVE TO A PLACE OF BUSINESS. APPROXIMATELY 3 HOURS LATER, CAR (STATIONARY IN A PARKING LOT) UNLOCKED, BUT WOULD NOT START. "KEY" INDICATOR LIGHT BLINKS, WHICH USUALLY MEANS REMOTE BATTERY IS LOW. AS I ATTEMPT TO PUSH BRAKE AND PUSH BUTTON TO START CAR, RED LIGHT BLINKS INDICATING MY CAR IS NOT RECOGNIZING THE KEY. IT'S 25 DEGREES OUTSIDE AND I HAVE MY 2 YEAR OLD CHILD AND NO HEAT IN MY CAR, SO I HAVE A FRIEND DRIVE ME HOME. I RETURN WITH NEW BATTERIES IN THE KEY. CAR STILL WILL NOT START. INSERTED THE KEY IN THE PORT, BUT THAT DIDN'T START THE CAR EITHER. AFTER READING AND RESEARCHING THE ISSUE, I'M SURE IT'S THE STEERING WHEEL LOCK MECHANISM. I THEREFORE HAVE TO CALL A TOW TRUCK AND HAVE MY CAR TOWED TO THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP.
THE CAR FAILED TO START DUE TO A STEERING WHEEL LOCK MECHANISM FAILURE AND THE CAR HAD TO BE TOWED AND THE STEERING WHEEL LOCK MECHANISM REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY AT THE TIME OF THIS FAILURE, HOWEVER THESE UNITS SHOULD BE FAIRLY RELIABLE AND SHOULD NOT BE FAILING. IT APPEARS THAT THE UNIT USED IN THESE CARS HAS A PARTICULAR DESIGN FLAW THAT CAUSES THESE UNITS TO FAIL AND NISSAN HAS MANY COMPLAINTS AGAINST THE FAILURE OF THESE UNITS. MY BIGGER QUESTION IS TO WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THESE UNITS FAIL WHILE DRIVING THE CAR. IS IT POSSIBLE THAT PEOPLE ARE DRIVING AROUND IN DEATH TRAPS THAT MAY LOCK THEIR STEERING WHILE DRIVING? I HAD THE UNIT REPLACED AND CONTACTED NISSAN AND WAS NOT ABLE TO GET A STRAIGHT ANSWER ON IF THESE UNITS ARE SAFE, IF THE REPLACEMENT IS SAFE, IF THE REPLACEMENT CONTAINS THE SAME DEFECT AS THE ORIGINAL UNIT. NISSAN HAD EXTENDED THE WARRANTY ON THIS UNIT, BUT OBVIOUSLY IT HAS NOT BEEN LONG ENOUGH, OR THE REPLACEMENT UNITS ARE FAILING AS WELL. SUCH A SIMPLE UNIT THAT OBVIOUSLY HAS A WEARING DESIGN FLAW THAT MAY POTENTIALLY LEAD TO LOSS OF CONTROL OF A VEHICLE IF IT DOES NOT FAIL SAFE. DOES IT FAIL SAFE?

THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS BECAUSE SOMEONE COULD RUN INTO THE BACK OF THE CAR AT ANY GIVEN TIME. I TRAVEL UP AND DOWN THE ROAD A GOOD BIT. HAVING THIS PROBLEM IS VERY DANGEROUS FOR ME. NOW, A FEW MONTHS MY CAR WANT START AGAIN. THE DEALERSHIP THINKS ITS THE STEERING COLUMN THIS TIME. MY CAR DON'T EVEN HAVE 70,000 MILES ON IT. THIS DOESN'T MAKE SINCE TO ME. THIS 2009 ALTIMA IS THEIR ONLY VEHICLE AND SOURCE OF TRANSPORTATION. AT WORK LAST WEEK, MY MOTHER WAS HEADED HOME TO CHECK ON MY FATHER WHO HAS RECENTLY HAD A STROKE. HER VEHICLE WOULD NOT START. AFTER CONVERSATIONS WITH DEALERS WHO ARE 75+ MILES AWAY, WE DETERMINED THAT HER STEERING WHEEL LOCK MECHANISM HAD FAILED. THIS RENDERED THE CAR UNDRIVEABLE AND IT HAD TO BE TOWED TO A DEALER WHERE THIS PART WAS REPLACED FOR $1055, (NOT INCLUDING TOWING FEE, $327). THIS IS THE SAME PART THAT NISSAN HAD ISSUED AN "EXTENDED WARRANTY" ON FOR 6 YEARS WITH FREE REPLACEMENT AND UNLIMITED MILEAGE RESTRICTION. NEEDLESS TO SAY, THEY HAVE YET BEEN UNCOMPROMISING THAT THIS IS NOW AN OUT OF WARRANTY REPAIR. STILL YET, THEY HAVE ACKNOWLEDGED THAT THIS IS A KNOWN PART FOR FAILURE AND NEVER CONTACTED MY PARENTS REGARDING THIS POSSIBLE ISSUE. THIS CAR HAD 43,989 MILES ON IT WHEN THIS EVENT TOOK PLACE. MY CONCERN IS THAT THIS ISN'T JUST A WORN OUT CUSHION ON A SEAT THAT COULD EASILY BE OVERLOOKED IF FAILURE OCCURRED. INSTEAD, THIS RENDERS THE VEHICLE UN-OPERABLE AND COULD HAVE HAPPENED AT A TIME OF GREATER NEED. IF THE PART HAS BEEN KNOWN TO BE DEFECTIVE AND WAS DISCONTINUED ON THE NEXT GENERATION OF THE ALTIMA, WHY WAS IT NOT RECALLED? THE EXTENDED WARRANTY WAS A BANDAID ON A LARGE WOUND. PERHAPS THE LOW NUMBER OF MILES NEVER LET THIS CAR BE CYCLED AS OFTEN IN ORDER FOR THE FAILURE TO OCCUR PRIOR TO THE 6 YEAR CUTOFF. STILL YET, A BILL OF NEARLY $1400 HAS BEEN GENERATED FOR TWO SENIOR ADULTS WHO LIVE ON A FIXED INCOME, BUT DO STILL RELY ON THEIR VEHICLE. AT THE VERY LEAST, THEY SHOULD COVER THEIR EXPENSES.
