I DROVE TO WORK EVERYTHING WAS FINE WENT OUT ON BREAK TO START MY CAR AND CAN'T DO ANYTHING WINDOWS ARE LOWERED AND IT STARTED TO RAIN THE STEERING LOCK HAS WENT OUT AND LEAVES YOU KNOW WAY OF DOING ANYTHING WITH THE CAR NOW I HAVE TO MISS WORK TO GET VEHICLE PUT IN TO A DEALERSHIP I SEE MANY OTHERS WITH THE SAME PROBLEMS
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 NISSAN ALTIMA. WHILE ATTEMPTING TO START THE VEHICLE, THE INTELLIGENT KEY MALFUNCTION INDICATOR ILLUMINATED AND THE ENGINE WOULD NOT START. THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100,000.
I AM THE LATEST VICTIM OF FAULTY STEERING LOCK ON 2009 NISSAN ALTIMA. I DIDN'T KNOW UNTIL IT HAPPENED WITH ME. I ALONG WITH MY FAMILY (INCLUDING 10 MONTHS OLD KID) WENT OUT AROUND 7:30 PM ON 10TH DEC 2016 AND STOPPED TO FILL FUEL AT THE NEARBY FUEL STATION. SWITCHED OFF CAR'S IGNITION BEFORE FILLING FUEL AS USUAL BUT WAS UNABLE TO START IT LATER. CAR IGNITION DIDN'T START AT ALL, BOTH STEERING AND BRAKES GOT LOCKED AND DIDN'T MOVE AT ALL. EVENTUALLY CAR WAS SHOWING KEY SYMBOL REPEATEDLY. IT WAS LITTLE COLD OUTSIDE AND STARTED RAINING AS WELL. HAD TO GET CAR TOWED BACK HOME, IT TOOK ME 3 HOURS TO GET HOME AS TOWING SERVICE WAS DELAYED AS WELL. MEANWHILE ATTEMPT TO JUMP START THE VEHICLE ALSO DIDN'T HELP AS BATTERIES WERE ALL OKAY. BEING SUNDAY NEXT DAY, NO REPAIR SHOPS AND NISSAN DEALER WERE OPENED. DURING THIS TIME RESEARCHED ABOUT THE ISSUE AND LEARNT THAT THERE IS A DEFECT ON 2009 NISSAN ALTIMA STEERING LOCK SYSTEM WHICH DISABLED THE CAR UNTIL REPLACED. AND NISSAN HAD KEPT ONLY EXTENDED WARRANTY OF 6 YEARS ON THIS PART BUT THERE WAS NO RECALL. I HAD TO GET VEHICLE TOWED TO NEAREST NISSAN DEALERSHIP ON MONDAY AND UPON DIAGNOSTIC THEY ALSO FOUND THE SAME PROBLEM. HAD TO COUGH UP $1200 TO GET IT REPLACED INCLUDING LABOR CHARGES. IT IS HUGE DENT TO POCKET BUT SEEMS THERE WAS NO CHOICE. IT IS UNFORTUNATE THAT NISSAN HAS DECIDED TO NOT TO RECALL THIS PART EVEN AFTER LEARNING MUTLIPLE REPORTS AND ITS DEFECTIVENESS. KEEPING 6 YEARS EXTENDED WARRANTY DOESN'T HELP AS LOW MILEAGE CAR WILL TAKE MORE YEARS TO DETECT THIS PROBLEM. MOREOVER THERE IS EXTRA BURDEN ON CONSUMERS OF THEIR TIME, SPOILED PLANS AND MONEY. WORST CASE IF IT HAPPENS TO SOMEONE AT REMOTE LOCATION WHERE GETTING HELP IS BLEAK. I URGE NHTSA TO TAKE THIS MATTER SERIOUSLY AND DIRECT NISSAN TO RECALL/REIMBURSE ON THE DEFECTIVE PARTS. SAFETY OF CONSUMER SHOULD BE TOP PRIORITY THAN PROFITS.
I WAS PARKED IN BANK PARKING LOT ON 601. S CLARK ST, CHICAGO, IL WHEN PUSHING THE THE START PUSH BUTTON, THE CAR WOULD NOT START. THE KEY SYMBOL WAS ILLUMINATING. TRIED TO JUMP THE BATTERY AND THE CAR WOULDN'T START. CONTACED NISSAN DEALERSHIP TO TRY TO TROUBLESHOOT. SO, I HAD FMY BOYFRIEND DRIVE ME TO THE DEALERSHIP, BOUGHT A NEW BATTERY FOR THE REMOTE TRANSMITTER, THE CAR STILL WOULDN'T START. SO THE CAR WAS TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP THE ELECTRONIC STEERING LOCK MODULE WENT OUT ON THIS CAR. AND THE COST OF REPAIRS WAS 1,162.15
I GO TO COLLEGE IN A REMOTE PART OF NEBRASKA AND IN THE WINTERS IT GETS REALLY COLD AND WHEN YOU HAVE A CAR IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE AND IT DOES NOT WANT TO START. THANKS NISSAN FOR NOT CARING IF I DIE OF EXPOSURE. I LIVE IN REMOTE TOWN THAT DOESN'T EVEN HAVE A GROCERY STORE. EVERYTHING IS CLOSED BY 6PM IN MY TOWN AND WE ARE THE LAST PLACE TO CLOSE IN MY WORK TOWN WHICH IS A 30 MIN DRIVE HOME. BOTH OF THESE TOWNS WOULD BE CONSIDERED SMALL TOWN MIDWEST FARM TOWNS, SO WHEN I CLOSE WORK AND I CAN'T START MY CAR AT MIDNIGHT, I'M STRANDED. I CAN'T GO BACK INTO WORK TO KEEP WARM AS THE LOCK AND ALARM ARE ACTIVATED WHEN I LEAVE. NO ONE IS UP AND THE ONLY PEOPLE ON THE STREETS ARE THE COPS & ARE NOT TAXIS TO DRIVE ME 30 MINS TO ANOTHER TOWN HOME. POINT IS, MY CAR DOESN'T TURN ON, I'M LEFT OUT IN ZERO DEGREE WEATHER OR BELOW ZERO WITH ONE HECK OF A WIND CHILL TO JUST WAIT FOR SOME ONE THAT IS OVER AN HOUR AWAY TO COME GET ME. IF I'M LUCKY ENOUGH TO FIND SOME ONE IN PERU, NE. OTHERWISE I AM CALL MY MOTHER IN LINCOLN, NE. THAT'S OVER AN HOUR AND HALF DRIVE. I HAVE BEEN STRANDED NOW 3 TIMES SINCE DECEMBER 10, 2016. 1ST TIME. I WAS TOLD IT IS MY BATTERY. REPLACED IT TO NO RESOLVE. 2ND TIME WAS TOLD IT IS MY ALTERNATOR. TESTED FINE AND SINCE IT STARTED FINE AT THE DEALERSHIP THEY SAID MY CAR WAS FINE. 3RD TIME, I HOPED ON THE INTERNET AND TO MY COMPLETE SURPRISE AND SHOCK TO FIND THAT THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED ISSUES. NISSAN HAS KNOWN ABOUT THE STEERING LOCK CONTROL UNIT STRANDING PEOPLE FOR YEARS AND HAS DONE NOTHING TO NOTIFY THERE CUSTOMERS OR HAVE IT AS A RECALL, BUT ONLY AS A WARRANTY ISSUE WHICH EXPIRED 1-2016. I HAVE ALREADY SPENT OVER $300 TRYING TO GET THE PROBLEM FIXED. I AM A COLLEGE STUDENT PUTTING MYSELF THROUGH COLLEGE. THAT WAS MY BOOK MONEY THIS SEMESTER. I DON'T HAVE RICH PARENTS AND NEED A RELIABLE CAR. NISSAN GET IT TOGETHER AND MAKE THIS A RECALL TO FIX IT!!
MY 2009 NISSAN ALTIMA'S STEERING COLUMN LOCK IS DEFECTIVE. IT'S FAILED IN MY CAR TWICE NOW LEADING TO COSTLY REPAIRS/REPLACEMENTS. THE CAR WILL BE RUNNING PERFECTLY WHEN I ARRIVE AT MY DESTINATION AND I PROCEED TO TURN OFF THE CAR AND LEAVE. UPON RETURNING, THE INTELLIGENT KEY WARNING LIGHT APPEARS AND IT BECOMES NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO TURN ON THE CAR. SOMETIMES A JUMP WILL START THE CAR (WHICH HAS A NEW, FULLY CHARGED BATTERY), BUT MANY TIMES NOTHING WORKS EXCEPT GETTING THE CAR TOWED TO MECHANIC TO HAVE THE COLUMN LOCK REPLACED. THE STEERING COLUMN LOCK IS SUPPOSED TO STOP THEFT, NOT KEEP ME FROM STARTING MY CAR WHEN I'M TRYING TO GET HOME FROM WORK AT NIGHT. IT'S ABSURD THAT THIS IS SUCH A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE NISSAN ALTIMA'S AND THAT NISSAN REFUSES TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR DEFECTIVE PRODUCT. NOW THAT WINTER IS APPROACHING, I MAY BE FORCED TO SPEND HOURS OUTSIDE IN THE FREEZING COLD TRYING TO GET MY CAR TO START BECAUSE THE COLUMN LOCK IS DEFECTIVE AND COMPLETELY UNRELIABLE. IT IS JUST NOT SAFE TO DRIVE IN A CAR YOU ARE AFRAID TO TURN OFF BECAUSE IT MAY NOT START AGAIN, ESPECIALLY IN THE COLD OR WHEN YOU ARE FAR FROM HOME.
WENT TO WORK CAR, WILL NOT START WHEN I WENT TO LEAVE WORK. STANDARD FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS. NO WARNING IT WAS GOING BAD.
DRIVER SIDE DOOR WILL NOT OPEN. ONLINE RESEARCH REFERS TO "ACTUARY" NEEDING TO BE REPLACED. THE DOOR WILL LOCK AND UNLOCK BUT DOOR WILL NOT OPEN. FORTUNATELY, OTHER DOORS STILL FUNCTION.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 NISSAN ALTIMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE FAILED TO START AND THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE STEERING COLUMN HAD TO BE REPLACED AND REPROGRAMMED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 45,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 NISSAN ALTIMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START AND THE INTELLIGENT KEY WARNING SENSOR ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE IGNITION LOCK/SMART KEY LOCK NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE EXTENDED WARRANTY EXPIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000.
THE DATE WAS 12/7/2016. MY 2009 NISSAN ALTIMA FAILED TO START AT THE END OF MY SHIFT AT WORK. AFTER SOME RESEARCH I FOUND THAT WHAT I HAD WAS A FAULTY ESCL. I FOUND THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM FOR THIS MODEL CAR. THE CAR FAILS TO EVEN TURN ON THE TO THE ACC MODE. NISSAN KNOWS THAT THIS IS A PROBLEM AND EXTENDED THE WARRANTY FOR ONLY 72 MONTHS AND HAS REFUSED TO MAKE A RECALL SINCE IT INVOLVES A PARKED CAR. THE TEMPERATURE FOR TODAY WAS 26 DEGREES AND HAD I BEEN SOMEWHERE FAR FROM HOME WHERE MY FATHER COULDN'T PICK ME UP THEN I'D BE STRANDED IN THE COLD TO FREEZE. THIS IS ALSO A SAFETY CONCERN BECAUSE THE CAR MAY FAIL TO START IN AN UNSAFE NEIGHBORHOOD OR OTHER UNSAFE CONDITIONS. NISSAN NEEDS TO EITHER RECALL OR EXTEND THEIR WARRANTY ON THE ESCL.
SO I WAS AT WORK CAME OUT TO START MY CAR AND IT WOULDN'T START...THOUGHT IT WAS MY BATTERY IT WASNT THAT. GOT IT TOWED TO NISSAN DEALERSHIP.YOUNG LADY ADVISED ME IT WAS STEERING COLUMN LOCK.AFTER DOING MY RESEARCH I SEEN THIS MATTER TO ALOT OF NISSAN CUSTOMER'S.THE COST WAS OVER 1,000 DOLLARS AND SEEN THE WARRANTY EXPIRED LAST YEAR. HAD TO PAID OTHER PEOPLE TO GET BACK AND FORWARD TO WORK AND PICK MY CHILD UP FROM CHILDCARE. CALLED NISSAN1 THE WOMAN TOLD ME IT WOULD TAKE 3 BUSINESS DAY TO REVIEW MY CASE....SHE CALLED TODAY TELLING ME IT WAS NOTHING THEY CAN ABOUT THIS MATTER.I WAS PISSED OFF. THIS PROBLEM WASNT MY FAULT AND NISSAN KNEW ABOUT THIS PROBLEM WAY BEFORE ME. ITS SAD TO BE A CUSTOMER TO NISSAN. THEY REALLY DONT CARE ABOUT THEIR CUSTOMERS OR THIS PROBLEM SEEM LIKE EVERYONE HAVING. *TR

THE ESCL DIED TODAY, AT NIGHT HERE IN MAINE. SEARCHING THE FOR THIS PROBLEM, IT SEEMS THAT THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH NISSAN, WHICH DID NOTHING TO PREVENT MY TEENAGER FROM BEING STRANDED, AT NIGHT. I SEE THE PART IS ON AMAZON FOR ONLY $400, AND TAKES ABOUT 30 MINUTES TO INSTALL. WHY DOES A DEALER WANT $1000 FOR A REPAIR OF THIS SORT? THIS IS CRAZY - CONSIDERING THAT NISSAN EVEN EXTENDED THE WARRANTY ON THIS PART TO 6 YEARS - I JUST MISSED THE DEADLINE.

FOR THE 2ND TIME, THE ELECTRONIC STEERING COLUMN LOCK HAS MALFUNCTIONED IN MY 2009 NISSAN ALTIMA. THIS IS UTTERLY RIDICULOUS! THIS IS NOT NORMAL MAINTENANCE. SOMEONE NEEDS TO HOLD NISSAN OR THE MANUFACTURER OF THIS PART ACCOUNTABLE FOR THIS. I AM SO DISGUSTED WITH NISSAN!!
WHEN LEAVING TO GO HOME FROM AN EVENT FOR MY KIDS, THE CAR WOULD NOT AND COULD NOT START. THE KEY LOCK SYMBOL (RED) AND LOCK SYMBOL (YELLOW) WERE LIT ON THE DASHBOARD. I DID SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND THAT THE IT WAS THE STEERING COLUMN LOCK WHICH MANY HAS BEEN COMPLAINING ABOUT. THIS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED A RECALL WITH ALL THE PROBLEMS. *TR
THE STEERING LOCK BROKE WHILE I WAS DRIVING STRAIGHT IN A PARKING LOT, FORCING THE ENGINE TO SHUT OFF. I HAVE 10 MONTH OLD TWIN DAUGHTERS AND THIS COULD HAVE RESULTED IN A VERY SERIOUS CAR ACCIDENT IF THE VEHICLE WAS ON A MAIN ROAD OR HIGHWAY AND GOING AT A FASTER SPEED. SUPPOSEDLY THIS IS A WELL-KNOWN ISSUE WITH 2009 NISSAN ALTIMA'S (AND OTHER YEAR MODELS AS WELL). INSTEAD OF A RECALL, NISSAN EXTENDED THE WARRANTY ON THIS PART BY ONE YEAR. I CALLED NISSAN AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THE EXTENDED WARRANTY EXPIRED IN AUGUST 2015, SO I WILL HAVE TO PAY FOR THIS OUT OF POCKET. THE ESTIMATED COST IS BETWEEN $1,100 AND $1,300. THE CAR DOESN'T START AT ALL, AND APPARENTLY ONLY NISSAN DEALERS CAN FIX IT. THIS IS VERY WORRISOME THAT NISSAN ACKNOWLEDGED THIS AS A PROBLEM, BUT DID NOT CONSIDER THE SAFETY OF ITS CUSTOMERS AND ISSUE A RECALL. *TR
THE STEERING LOCK CEASED UP AND MY CAR WOULD NO LONGER START. I WENT INTO A STORE CAME OUT AND THE CAR WOULD NO LONGER DO ANYTHING! THE KEY BUTTON WOULD COME ON BUT NOTHING ELSE. WAS LIKE I WASNT EVEN TRYING TO START THE CAR. I HAD MY TWO CHILDREN WITH ME AND IT WAS IN THE EVENING. WINTER TEMPS ARE GETTING INTO THE FREEZING TEMPS. I AM THANKFUL THIS DID NOT HAPPEN ON MY WAY HOME, IF I HAD TO PULL OVER ON THE HIGHWAY FOR SOME REASON AND TURN OFF MY CAR TO GET SOMETHING FOR MY CHILDREN WE WOULD HAVE BEEN STUCK IN 30 F WEATHER. THIS HAPPENED WITH NO WARNING AT ALL!!! THIS CAN BE A VERY DANGEROUS LIABILITY!! THIS NEEDS TO BE RECALLED AND ALL REPLACED! RIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS AND WE NOW HAVE TO PAY A MINIMUM OF $600 JUST FOR THE PART.
12-2-16, FRIDAY 9:30 PM VERY COLD IN NORTHEASTERN OHIO. CAR IN PARKING LOT WOULD NOT START BECAUSE OF A STEERING LOCK FAILURE. CALLED NEIGHBOR 25 MILES AWAY FOR A RIDE HOME. 12-3-16,SAT.CAR TOWED TO NISSAN DEALER WHERE PURCHASED. REPAIR WOULD COST UPWARDS OF $1,000. RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET INDICATES NISSAN HAD EXTENDED WARRANTY REPAIRS FOR THIS PROBLEM AND THEN RECINDED IT. I BELIEVE THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE. IF A PERSON IS STRANDED AND CANNOT GET A CELL TOWER CONNECTION, ONE COULD FREEZE TO DEATH. WHAT IF A FAMILY WITH SMALL CHILDREN EXPERIENCED THIS ON A SUB-ZERO NIGHT? THE CAR HAS ONLY 55,400 MILES ON IT BUT I DO NOT TRUST IT FOR ME OR MY WIFE TO DRIVE. THERE SHOULD BE A FEDERAL RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM.

I GOT IN MY CAR THE OTHER DAY TO RUN TO THE STORE AND THE CARS PUSH BUTTON IGNITION WOULD NOT START THE CAR, THE LLGHT ON THE DASH SUGGESTS THAT THE STEERING WHEEL IS NOT LOCKED, BUT IT IS LOCKED. VEHICLE IS PARKED IN MY DRIVEWAY
STEERING COLUMN LOCK SYSTEM I WAS STRANDED IN FREEZING TEMPERATURES WITH MY 3YEAR OLD WHEN THE STEERING LOCK SYSTEM FAILED AND MY CAR WOULD NOT START. I HAD STOPPED TO DROP OFF MY 6 YEAR OLD AT SCHOOL AND WHEN I RETURNED TO MY CAR IT WOULDN'T START. I HAD NO WARNING OR INDICATION THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM. NOT WAS I AWARE OF THE FREQUENCY OF THIS HAPPENING TO OTHER NISSAN VEHICLES.
THE STEERING LOCK MECHANISM FAILED WHILE STOPPED AND PARKED, RESULTING IN MY SIGNIFICANT OTHER BEING STRANDED TWICE IN A 3 DAY PERIOD. THE FIRST DAY A LIGHT TAPPING ON THE DEVICE ALLOWED THE CAR TO BE STARTED. BUT AFTER THE SECOND TIME, NOTHING COULD BE DONE TO GET THE CAR TO START. THIS HAS HAPPENED 5 TOTAL TIMES NOW OVER THE COURSE OF THE PAST 2 YEARS. WHAT IF THIS WERE TO HAPPEN IN BELOW 0 CONDITIONS WHERE HELP IS NOT CLOSE BY?
THE STEERING WHEEL LOCK HAS FAILED LEAVING THE CAR UNABLE TO BE STARTED. I WAS STRANDED AT MY WORK AND THE CAR NEEDED TO BE TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP TO BE DIAGNOSED. THE DEALER IS AWARE OF THIS AS A COMMON PROBLEM YET ARE UNWILLING TO ISSUE A RECALL AND MY CAR IS OUT OF THE WARRANTY PERIOD. THIS PROBLEM IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE BEING STRANDED ON THE ROAD. IF YOU'RE LUCKY, THEN YOU ARE PARKED SAFELY IN A PARKING LOT BUT YOU MIGHT NOT BE SO LUCKY AND IT COULD FAIL WHILE YOU ARE DRIVING. *TR
MY CAR WOULD NOT START AND I WAS FORCED TO SIT IN MY CAR FOR HOURS AS THE STORES HAD CLOSED AND IT TOOK OVER A HOUR TO HAVE MY CAR TOWED. THIS LEFT ME IN A SITUATION IN WHICH I COULD HAVE BEEN HARMED AS A YOUNG WOMAN IN VULNERABLE SITUATION. NISSAN STATES THAT THIS IS A MANUFACTURER IRREGULARITY WHICH MEANS THIS IS SOMETHING THAT SHOULDN'T BE HAPPENING AND IS A MANUFACTURE ISSUE. AFTER GETTING IT DIAGNOSED BY A CERTIFIED NISSAN DEALER, I WAS TOLD IT WAS MY ESCL. NISSAN SHOULD HONOR THEIR WORD AND FIX THE ISSUE AT NO COST SINCE IT'S A MANUFACTURE MALFUNCTIONING ISSUE IN WHICH THE CUSTOMER HAS NO CONTROL OVER.
ELECTRONIC STEERING COLUMN LOCK (ESCL) FAILED AND WAS STICKS AND STRANDED. I AM A FULL TIME STUDENT AS WELL AS WORKING FULL TIME. HAD TO GET MY 09 ALTIMA TOWED TO THE DEALSHIP AND LOST OUT ON WORK AND MADE MY DAILY LIFE A FINANCIAL HARDSHIP. IT IS GOING TO COST ME $1100 JUST FOR THE PART AND LABOR. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH 2009 ALTIMA'S AND NEEDS TO BE RECALLED UNTIL NISSAN FIXES THE ISSUE. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION TO BE IN, IF I WAS CAMPING AND HAD NO CELL PHONE SERVICE MY LIFE COULD SERIOUSLY BE IN DANGER. PLEASE ISSUE A RECALL FOR THIS PART.

LUCKILY THE CAR WAS PARKED AND WOULDN'T START FOR THIS INCIDENT. AFTER HAVING IT TOWED THEY NEEDED TO REPLACE THE STEERING LOCK MECHANISM. WE'RE GLAD IT WASN'T BEING DRIVEN ON THE HIGHWAY AT THE TIME IT FAILED AND POSSIBLY LOCKED UP THE STEERING COLUMN. THAT COULD HAVE BEEN DEADLY. THE REPLACEMENT COST OF THIS PART IS OUTRAGEOUS AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN COVERED OR REPLACED BY NISSAN. THEY'VE HAD A HISTORY OF ISSUES WITH THIS AND SHOULD REFUND US THE $1000 IT COST JUST FOR THE REPAIR BILL. IT'S RIDICULOUS THAT PEOPLE KEEP GETTING TAKEN FOR SOMETHING LIKE THIS. STERLING LOCKED, CANNOT OPERATE VEHICLE
IN THE EVENING OF NOV 26, 2016. IT WAS A FREEZING COLD NIGHT. MY CAR COULD NOT START WITH "KEY AND KEY SIGN" LIGHT ON. IT WAS ON BRIEFLY BEFORE. BUT IT WENT AWAY AFTER CHANGING BATTERY ON THE FOB. THIS TIME I TRIED ALL TRICKS FROM INTERNET AND IT DOES NOT WORK. FINALLY I TOOK THE ELECTRIC STEERING LOCK FROM THE STEERING ROD. DEPRESS THE PISTON. THE CAR CAN BE TURNED ON. FROM INTERNET, THERE ARE SO MANY 2009 ALTIMA OWNER HAS THE SAME ISSUE AND NISSAN ALSO KNEW IT BECAUSE IT EXTENDED THE WARRANTY TO MARCH 2016. IT COULD FAIL ANYTIME AND ANYWHERE. IT IS A BIG SAFETY ISSUE. I SUGGEST NISSAN TO MAKE THE WARRANTY LIFETIME AND REPLACE ALL DEFECTIVE STEERING LOCK.
THE CAR DOESNT START BECAUSE THE CAR'S STARTING SYSTEM IS FAULTY. IT IS CALLED ELECTRONIC STEERING COLUMN LOCK (ESCL) FAILURE. ONLY NISSAN DEALERS CAN FIX THIS ISSUE AND THEY CHARGE EXORBITANT AMOUNT OF MONEY FOR REPLACING A SMALL PART AND FOR LABOR. THIS IS NOT CAUSED BY A USER ERROR BUT BECAUSE OF A DEFECT WITH THIS MODEL ITSELF. THERE ARE MANY SUCH COMPLAINS ONLINE AND HAPPENS TO PEOPLE RANDOMLY. THIS IS A SEVERE HEALTH AND LIFE HAZARD. ME AND MY WIFE WERE ABOUT TO LEAVE FOR REMOTE PLACES WHEN THIS ISSUE HAPPENED AND IF THAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED, WE WOULD HAVE BEEN IN A HUGE MESS! NISSAN DOES NOT EVEN HAVE THE COURTESY TO REIMBURSE THE FULL REPAIR AMOUNT. I DIDN'T EVEN ASK FOR THE HOTEL AND TRIP CANCELLATION REIMBURSEMENT BUT STILL THEY ARE NOT READY TO BUDGE. I ESCALATED IT TO THREE LEVELS BUT TO NO EFFECT. THIS IS SAD. THERE MUST BE A RECALL ON THIS MODEL. MY CAR JUST HAS 60K MILES ON IT AND I FEEL CHEATED TO HAVE TO PAY $1100 FOR NISSAN'S FAULT JUST FOR THE REPAIR, LET ALONE ADDITIONAL EXPENSES I HAD TO INCUR TO BOOK HOTEL LAST MINUTE FOR TWO DAYS AND INCUR CHARGES FOR THE HOTEL STAYS FOR THE REST OF MY TRIP. MY HONEYMOON TRIP WAS SCREWED UP BECAUSE OF NISSAN AND THEY ARE SAYING THEY CAN ONLY REIMBURSE ME FOR THE PART WHICH IS ONLY HALF THE COST. I WILL SELL THIS CAR AS SOON AS I CAN AND WILL NEVER EVER BUY A NISSAN CAR AGAIN. BUT, I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THIS CAR RECALLED ASAP BEFORE IT LEADS TO SOMEONE'S DEATH.
THE VEHICLE STEERING LOCKED UP IN GROCERY STORE PARKING LOT, LEAVING ME STRANDED, IT HAD TO BE TOWED TO DEALERSHIP, THE DAY BEFORE THANKSGIVING LEAVING ME WITH NO TRANSPORTATION. THE SHUTTLE VAN HAD SHUT DOWN FOR THE DAY, BEING OUT OF WORK AND NOT HAVING THE FUNDS FOR A RENTAL CAR, I DID GET A LOANER CAR. THEY CALLED ON FRIDAY AND STATED THEY DID HAVE THE PART NEEDED FOR THE REPAIR AND HOPEFULLY WOULD HAVE CAR READY BY MONDAY AFTERNOON TO THE TUNE OF $1021.00. I REVIEWED INFORMATION ON THIS PROBLEM SEEING THE MILEAGE OF VEHICLES STARTING AT 88,000 TO 156,000 MILES, MY VEHICLE HAS 57,000 MILES. NEEDLESS TO SAY I AM VERY UNHAPPY THAT THIS HAS NOT BEEN MADE A RECALL BY NISSAN AS IT CERTAINLY SHOULD. THE CAR WAS PARKED. *TR

I CALLED NISSAN AND WAS NOTIFIED THAT THE RECALL ENDED IN 2015. I WAS NOT NOTIFIED. ONCE I SPOKE TO GENE AT NISSAN COMPANY SAID THE DEALER NEVER NOTIFIED THEM I WAS A NISSAN OWNER. DROVE MY 2009 ALTIMA TO LOCAL NISSAN DEALERSHIP FOR AN EVAP CANISTER SES LIGHT ISSUE. GOT OUT OF THE CAR TO GET EARLY BIRD PAPERWORK AND CAR WOULD NOT RESTART WHEN I RETURNED TO IT. THE SERVICE ADVISOR ADVISED THAT THE STEERING LOCK MECHANISM WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. MY RECEIPT FOR THE STEERING LOCK MECHANISM ALONE SHOWS A CHARGE OF $1110.78. FILED A COMPLAINT WITH NISSAN USA THAT SAME DAY AND WAS GIVEN A CASE NUMBER (24724130). I WAS TOLD IT WOULD HAVE TO BE HANDLED BY THE REGIONAL OFFICE AND TO EXPECT A CALL NLT 11/22/16 BY COB. RECEIVED A CALL FROM SHONECIA AT 12:32PM ON 11/22. THE CALL WAS BASICALLY TO INFORM ME THAT BECAUSE THEY HAD ORIGINALLY EXTENDED THE WARRANTY ON THE ISSUE AND IT HAD ENDED THEY WERE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIRS. WHEN I PROTESTED THAT THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE, SHE JUST REPEATED THE PREVIOUS COMMENTS ALONG WITH THE FACT THAT THEY ONLY ACKNOWLEDGE MAINTENANCE RECEIPTS FROM "CERTIFIED NISSAN-TRAINED SERVICE DEPARTMENTS" WHEN CONSIDERING HOW TO HANDLE REPAIR REIMBURSEMENTS. MY UNDERSTANDING IS THAT EVEN THOUGH THEY KNOW THIS IS A DEFECT IN THE CAR, THEY HAVE NO INTENTION OF DOING MORE THAT THE PREVIOUSLY MENTION WARRANTY EXTENSION. I STRESSED THAT THIS REALLY IS A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO WARNING--NOT A LIGHT, NOT A WHISPER, NOT A SHOUT-OUT--ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! I TOLD HER MY ONLY SILVER-LINING TO YESTERDAY WAS THAT IT HAPPENED AT THE DEALERSHIP AND NOT OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE. PRETTY SURE SHE DIDN'T CARE AND NEITHER DOES NISSAN. I DID ADVISE HER THAT I WOULD BE FILING A COMPLAINT WITH YOU AND MY STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE STEERING WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND THE MECHANIC INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE STEERING LOCK MECHANISM FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 113,000.
MY WIFE WAS DRIVING HER 2009 NISSAN ALTIMA AND PARKED. WHEN LEAVING TO GO HOME, THE CAR WOULD NOT AND COULD NOT START. THE KEY LOCK SYMBOL (RED) AND LOCK SYMBOL (YELLOW) WERE LIT ON THE DASHBOARD. I DID SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND THAT THE IT WAS THE STEERING COLUMN LOCK WHICH MANY HAS BEEN COMPLAINING ABOUT. I TOOK IT TO THE NISSAN DEALER AND THE PART WOULD BE $600.00. ATTACHED IS THE PRINTOUT OF THE WARRANTY. THIS HAD ME AND MY WIFE STRANDED ON ONE OF THE COLDEST DAY OF THE YEAR. THEY WOULDN'T CONSIDER FIXING IT UNLESS IT WAS A STANDARD REPAIR. THIS IS CRAZY!!! NISSAN DID NOT ISSUE A RECALL ON THIS DANGEROUS ISSUE, BUT INSTEAD OFFERED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY IF THE PART FAILED, WITHOUT NOTIFYING CONSUMERS. THIS IS SHAMEFUL ON NISSAN'S PART TO ALLOW PEOPLE TO BE STRANDED IN POSSIBLY DANGEROUS SITUATIONS. THE REPAIR WILL NOW COST HER BETWEEN $1000 AND $1200
STEERING WHEEL LOCK RECALL. THE STEERING WHEEL WAS ABLE TO BE TURNED ALL THE WAY AROUND AND WOULD NOT LOCK CAUSING THE CAR TO BE UN-DRIVEABLE. ONCE THE CAR WAS POWERED OFF AND TO A STOP THE CAR WOULD NOT START BACK UP AGAIN.

STEERING WHEEL LOCK WOULD NOT RELEASE TO START. THIS OCCURRED VERY FAR FROM HOME AND WITHOUT WARNING. NASSAN IS AWARE OF THIS AND DOES NOT ACT IN FAVOR OF OWNERS TO REMEDY THE PROBLEM THUS ALLOWING FOR COSTLY EXPENSE AND REPAIRS.
