NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2017 Nissan Altima. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
My nissan altime 2017 has 35000 miles on it. My car has never been into any accident. The Airbag warning light was on June 2023 and I sent it to the Cost Mesa/CA dealer to check (if there was no issue identified, they would still charge $200 for examination; but if anything need to be fixed/replaced, the $200 would go to part of the repair fee). They reported that the battery was low and caused the issue. They replaced the battery ($280) and reset the warning light. But now, one week later, the airbag warning light is on again and I will sent it to the dealer to check again. Nissan should check/recall their 2017 Alitma airbag system given some many filed reports. It is hard to not relate this airbag problem with the airbag recall on previous 2013-2016 Altima models.
The rear O2 sensor failed on my 2017 Nissan Altimas with only 29,900 miles on it and it cost me almost $400.00 to replace it.This is a part that should easily last for 150,000 miles. The failure of this part affects public safety by causing abnormally high emissions if not replaced. This failed component is identical to the recall issued in 2022 which covers the rear O2 sensor for 2013 - 2016 Nissan Altimas for 20 years or 200,000 miles. 2017 models should be covered under the same recall as it is the same problem and same part (even the same part number) which was covered under the 2013 - 2016 recall and I hope the NHTSA will pursue this on my behalf.
I changed the transmission fluid at 60K on my 2017 Nissan Altima SV. At 70,500 miles while driving on the highway my car started slipping, jerking off wears. I had no warning lights or signs that it was overheating. We pulled over for 30 minutes and continued. We were 45 minutes from home. It didn’t take long before it started again. The car would come out of wear and it would only run at 40mph going up hills. Once we got off the highway, the car wouldn’t go into gear. We didn’t make it home. I called my local Nissan dealership and they informed me I had no warranty at all. We had the car towed to a local transmission repair shop. My transmission was done. I put in a used transmission in for $3,300. 2 months later I get a notification from Nissan that the cvt transmission warranty has been extended to 84000 miles or 84 months, whichever came first. I called Nissan consumer affairs and they basically said, you repaired your car on your own there’s nothing we can do. Nissan has class action lawsuit which the time limit that has already expired. I still filled my paperwork proof with no answer what so ever. I can assure you I will not buy another Nissan vehicle again!
The airbag light turned on and will stay on. The car was taken into the dealership for inspection and diagnose the problem. The vehicle has only 36,000 miles and it has not been involved in an accident. The dealership advised that the front driver side airbag module needs to be replaced. The price quoted for this is over $3k. The service advisor advised that even with replacing the part that we may need to replace further parts due to this problem. Nissan consumer affair was contacted, and they have denied helping with this problem due to the vehicle being out of warranty because of the age of the vehicle. Airbag may or may not deploy and that does NOT make me feel safe when driving.
When I am driving this vehicle, I get to a stop sign or red light or even stopping at a drive-through window and when I need to go the car will not accelerate I have to shut the car off and turn it back on to get it to accelerate and go. This keeps happening and is very dangerous especially when I have my children in the car. The car also has trouble shifting into gear and jerks when I get onto the hwy. The car dealership last year told me it was nothing that they could not locate any issue with the vehicle. No symptoms prior to failure of the car sometimes it does it and sometimes it doesn't
Nissan has a very serious safety concern that if not remedied I will have to take action elsewhere. My 2017 altima lags and sputters randomly. I was almost hit today when I turned from an intersection and the car slowed down in the middle of the intersection. I demand more information about this issue and how to fix it within reasonable price range. The dealer couldn't find a problem. This is a huge problem that could cost many people their lives and money I do not have right now.
I got this car 2 weeks ago and 4 days after i got it, I was driving on the free way when it started lunging forward and slowing down. There was a car behind me that almost hit me because the car was malfunctioning. This problem caused danger to me and others on the road.
Both front springs broke at 30k miles.
Subject: Urgent Complaint Regarding Nissan Altima CVT Transmission and Emergency Brake System Failure I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the recent failure of my Nissan Altima's CVT transmission and emergency brake system. This unexpected issue has jeopardized the safety of myself and others on the road, and I urgently need assistance in resolving these critical issues. The failure was confirmed by a trusted, who emphasized the seriousness of the situation. Without warning signs or symptoms leading up to the failure, the safety implications are even more concerning. I kindly request immediate action from the manufacturer to investigate and provide a solution to ensure the safety of all Nissan Altima owners. Additionally, I seek assistance from insurance representatives and other relevant parties in addressing this urgent matter, including guidance on replacing my transmission. Your prompt attention to this matter is greatly appreciated, and I look forward to a swift and satisfactory resolution. Sincerely, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
April-May, Key fob not being recognized so changed the battery in key fob 4 times. May, Driving at 55MPH on I495 beltway, pushed on gas and did not get gas. Immediately put on flasher and drifted to right curb. Dashboard was still lit. Turned the car off. Within minutes restarted the car and went where I was going. I had AutoZone run a diagnostic and they said the car was fine. Drove another couple of weeks before it happened again. This time the car would not restart and I was stopped in a very dangerous location so I had AAA tow it to my residence. The next day the car started. I drove another two weeks before reoccurring. I was able to drive it home and it has been parked. There are never any warning, check engine light, etc. A Nissan mechanic told me the symptoms I told him sounds like an issue with the sensor mobilizer. I Google searched and found a recall for the Nissan Rogue but not the Nissan Altima. I did a VIN report and it showed 0 recalls. I definitely have a serious safety issue. Without warning the car gets no response from the gas pedal.
I was at work, the car was parked and off for more than 4 hours, came out and my car was on fire. Passenger driver side, at that point me and coworkers were rushing buckets of water and dumping them on my car. The fire department investigated and it was the cooling fan wiring that caused the fire.
Nissan of Cerritos knowingly and with malice sold me a defective car. The car has a delayed acceleration issue. It is the most helpless feeling to be in such danger everyday due to this ongoing CVT defect. My life and passenger lives is in danger because I never know when the issue will occur.
My car is periodically not accelerating at a stop when I push on the gas pedal.
I was driving my nissan altima when the recall hood latch let my hood open.Yes my car is available for inspection. I was driving on public road when the hood open with out any warning. It stop me from see the road and cars in front of me. Yes they replaced the recalled hood latch again. They did not fix the damages that happened to my car but give me the run a round. Now my windshield is broke, both finders are damaged and the hood is dented. Sutherlin Nissan in Cherokee County is where they replaced the recall hood latch and told me to get quote from ny body shop of choosing and send to Nissan Consumer affairs and they told me that Sutherlin Nissan should have runned it thru warranty. No warning lamps or messages appeared before the hood open.
CVT Transmission issues The car looses power starts high RPM and will not shift then accelerator fails to respond altogether causing car to suddenly slowdown in traffic. This is second time this has happened; first occurrence was on 3/27/22. the dealership reprogramed the cars computer that time. 4/23/23 This time I had to have the car towed back to the dealership.
Air bag light continues to turn on, possibly making side air bag inoperable. The dealership tells us that dirt or debris getting under the front seat can cause the airbags to malfunction.
I was driving my 2017 Nissan Altima SV, today on 3/3/23, and had just got on to a busy highway. I had my foot on the gas pedal trying to get to 60 mph. However, the car wouldn't accelerate past 40mph and was making a humming noise, even as I floored it. I looked to see if the car was in another gear but it was in drive. I had to pull the to slow lane and try to find a place to turn off. I came to an intersection where I had to stop, and again, couldn't accelerate to the 60mph that other traffic was traveling. It would only go about 40mph. People were changing lanes to pass me in busy Friday afternoon traffic. I finally found a shopping center to stop as I didn't want to get on the freeway to get home. I stopped the car but ended up eventually getting on the freeway and didn't have the problem again for the 15 miles. No check engine light came on at all during the acceleration problems. I have been researching the problem and the car may have gone into limp mode. I am taking the car to the shop tomorrow. I don't drive the car a lot, and it doesn't have a lot of miles on it, so I'm very surprised and terrified now to drive the car. I've been reading people with Altimas saying they have had a hard time getting a diagnosis for this problem because it doesn't occur sometimes at the shop. It's distressing to think this problem may come and go and I could be in 70mph traffic on a busy freeway, which I often am. I have not been in an accident, so no inspections until tomorrow when I go to the mechanic. This if the first time this has happened and I had no indication there could be a problem. I have barely been driving my car for the past two years as I have been working remotely. I bought Nissan 100% because it had a good reputation, but now I'm reading about this weird and potentially deadly problem.
low beam headlights extremely dim
The contact owns a 2017 Nissan Altima. The contact stated that while stopped at a traffic light, the accelerator pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle failed to accelerate. Additionally, while driving at an undisclosed speed, the contact smelled an abnormal odor. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who informed the contact that the transmission had a defective solenoid. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 137,000.
Air bags have stop working
After stopping at red light, Vehicle could not go more than 10mph. Stop the vehicle, turn off and restarted, now Vehicle could not go further or reverse. Luckly, at the intersection, i did not get into accident. My Altima is at 65000 miles. Nissan Altima CVT had an issue and need to recall for this fix. I saw Nissan did recall up to 2016 Altima, some reason, they did not include 2017 Altima. Please take a look into 2017 Altima data from Repair and Dealers shop to find out how much consumers are paying out and got into safety issue.
When driving my Nissan I had stop at light/ stop sign.My car notify me with a check engine light. It wouldn't accelerate in a matter of seconds I was able to continue driving. I notice it happens every time I have to stop at lights and or stop signs frequently. It first started at about 85,000 miles. I bought it at 65,000 miles I still owe for the car I took it to Nissan and they told me that it no longer had a warranty for the transmission. It has alittle over 100,000 just think that if there's alot of consumers complaining about the same issue it needs to be investigated and stop selling it until the issue is corrected.. In my opinion..
The contact owns a 2017 Nissan Altima. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the air bag warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer where the warning light was reset; however, the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, where the diagnostic codes were cleared, and the vehicle was test driven; however, the failure persisted. A Nissan warranty inspector recommended the replacement of the front driver's side air bag module, the driver's air bag and the air bag sensor. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle could not be repaired under the warranty unless the driver's side air bag module completely failed. The failure mileage was approximately 29,000.
The seat belt light stays on even when I have mines on and nobody is sitting in the passenger seat and the airbag light goes on and off for no reason
In mid December LF airbag light went on. Dealer found no issues cleared the code and problem recurred in 2 weeks. Dealer states airbag has to be replaced and if problem recurs then the module needs replacement. Repair for replacement airbag is 2625 and module according to the dealer would also be 2500 estimate. Wrote to Nissan since it appears this problem is fairly new and widespread some remediation should be offered
After coming to a complete stop at a red light or stop sign, there is a delay of acceleration. It takes 3-4 seconds to even respond to me depressing the gas pedal, with no change in RPMs or response in the first 3-4 seconds. Then, the car accelerates very quickly like a sling-shot. This is dangerous particularly in stop-and-go traffic. I have videos of the issue. The dealership stated that they cannot replicate the problem in their shop so it can’t be fixed. This might cause an accident and this seems to be happening to multiple other Altima drivers but there is no recall. This has been occurring for over six months and three trips to the mechanic/dealership with no resolve.
I was driving on the highway and lost all my speed it dropped from 70 to 30 on the highway had to pull over and shut my car down. I restarted it, and my RPMs went up but were not moving. After this happen I have been in almost 15 accidents. The stops and then happens again. I hear like a winding noise when I try to keep a safe distance from people on the highway. Now all of a sudden my car is shaking and feels like my tires are going to fall off they are not through. No lights came on before this happend.
Airbag is off and airbag indicator light is illuminated. The vehicle has not been in any accidents and Nissan states that this is an airbag issue (known). They refuse to warranty it even though the unit is under 100k miles. The dealership confirmed that the SRS Airbag system is not operational. A Google search for this provides many 2017 Altima drivers with the same issue and Nissan is not fixing this.
The driver side airbag warning light appeared on dashboard approx 2 months ago. I took it to Piazza Nissan for service, where a 27 point vehicle inspection was performed. I was told the airbag needed to be replaced, as well as the LF seat back assembly. The parts would cost just over $2000.00, and with labor would be just over $3000.00. I was also told there is a national backorder for the parts, and the dealer would call me when they are available. The airbag does not work on the front driver’s side of the car anymore. My car has never been in an accident, the airbags were never deployed, and I have regularly had all of the maintenance checks done at Nissan dealers. I do not understand what would cause this problem except for faulty parts.
From a stop the car is delayed when trying to drive for 5 secs then takes off like a slingshot. I see a lot people have been complaining about this issue with no resolve. Last Nissan I will ever purchase.
The locking mechanism on the rear passenger door has broken twice. The electric switching mechanism does not lock or unlock the door. Has to be done manually. Additionally the child safety lock also had to be replaced on the same door. Causing the door to only be able to be opened from the outside. Both are potentially very dangerous in the emergency situations.
Headlights are to dim to see the road at night. Very dangerous. This has gotten progressively worse. When researching I found their are class action lawsuits about this issue. While there does not appear to be an official recall, I was not notified of the lawsuit and wonder why there is not an official recall.
The transmission. The scar started to slow down in the middle of the Highway. No warning lights ever appeared. Car was always serviced and well cared for. Car was checked by dealers to see what was going on and the transmission went bad. My life and children’s was put at risk! This was such a scary moment
Headlights are continuing to get Dimmer. I was never notified by Nissan regarding the replacement campaign
On September 14, 2022 at about 7: 30 PM I attempted to shift from park to reverse and the gear shift would not move from park. I reset the park brake and released it once again thinking perhaps the brake did not fully release but it would not go into reverse. The gear shift was locked. I restarted the car and did everything I normally do and still nothing. I wiggled the shift after making sure I pressed the release lock on the shift at the same time and made sure the break was not the cause. Finally the shift released and I was able to put it into reverse. The next morning the same thing happened. I am taking it to the shop for an evaluation. My concern is that this situation is happening more than consumers are reporting and I suggest that NISSAN should look into having a recall for whatever the fix is to correct this so that wear and tear is not what it is considered as. As a result I would like to know what can be done to better address this inevitable problem with the gear shift
I was driving for work and all the sudden the airbag light came on and stayed on. Was told I had an Error Code B0020 and that the LF drive side airbag needed to be replaced. It will be 3000 to fix, or I have NO AIRBAGS working in my car to drive my family. The car has been serviced every couple months since purchase. No accidents.
Transmission jerk and stalling
Follow-up to issue #11479380 Just 6 days ago, I filed a complaint regarding acceleration issues with my 2017 Nissan Altima. Unfortunately, yesterday (8/20/2022), I was involved in an accident with the car as a direct result of these ongoing acceleration issues. I was the driver in the driveway of a friend’s house and as I tried to pull closer to the house (to perform a K-turn in a tight spot), with my foot (lightly) on the gas pedal, the car suddenly surged forward and hit the house. A passenger and I both experienced minor injuries (no medical attention required), and both the car and the house now require repairs. I’m in touch with both my insurance and Nissan about this accident, but no longer feel safe driving this vehicle (which is now pending repairs due to this accident). I wanted to post a follow-up since there was an accident directly related to this issue.
Airbags deployed with no collision, so I had an inspection done with Nissan, and they reported that there was no malfunction. It does not make sense because airbags are not supposed to deploy mid-driving without anything hitting them. I was at risk, and other people on the road were put at risk of an accident. If I were on the freeway instead of a rural road, there would have been a higher risk of an accident and people getting hurt and causing an accident from the airbags deploying. I was lucky enough to be on a rural road where I was not going as fast, so people could avoid hitting me because I had slowed down very abruptly; I thought I got hit when the airbags deployed from the loud noise that the airbags made when they deployed. Previously my vehicle has been serviced at the dealership for any issues it had prior, and it was in excellent condition. After removing myself from the vehicle in the middle of the road, I checked around the vehicle, and there was no other vehicle. I also went around my vehicle and checked for any damages; there was no physical damage, and it was exactly how it was before. I had two witnesses walking on the sidewalk that came towards me and talked to me, we had a police officer come check out the situation and talk to me; they were puzzled as well. Called my insurance company, and they will not cover airbags deploying on their own. I also have a police report as well. I checked for any recalls, and there are no recalls obtaining my vehicle via my VIN number. The VIN number and recall check was done by me through the website and Nissan consumer affairs. I got bruised and hurt and went to the emergency room the following day. There was no other warning signs on my dashboard prior.
Delays in acceleration. When operating the vehicle. At a complete stop. When I depress the gas pedal there is a few seconds delay before the vehicle starts to accelerate. No warnings appear on dashboard. No check engine light, no visible indication of problem.
I own a 2017 Nissan Altima. It has 57,000 miles. About a week ago, I started the car after it was parked overnight and the air bag light illuminated and stayed on. This vehicle had not been in an accident and I am the only driver of this vehicle. I took the vehicle to a Nissan dealership. They diagnosed it and I was told it would be a $3,000.00 repair (although I have not seen a copy of the diagnostic findings). I did get a copy of a partial listing of the parts involved which included: pressure detection sensor, curtain module assembly, side air bag module assembly, air bag pressure detect module and to replace the left seat back frame assembly. Unfortunately, my extended warranty does not cover air bags. I am wondering if my car should have been included in the air bag recall that included the 2016 Nissan Altima. It is difficult for me to understand how my 5 year old car with no accidents has an airbag system that needs such and intensive and significant repair. I'm not a mechanic by any means, but I would think it should be no more than a faulty sensor causing the light to come on without a cause.
The transmission failed at around 44,000 miles. It started losing power on the Highway causing it to lunge forward at times and die out while pulling out and slowing down. Eventually the reverse gear stopped working . It would stall above1,000 RPMs and only operate at low speeds. Nissan knows good and well about this issue and does nothing to offer monitory assistance of replacing the transmission and not much of A guarantee on A replacement only A year warranty . They should be pulling these hazardous cvt transmissions out and pull these cars off the market before someone gets killed. The cost of replacing this transmission is over 5,000 and that’s only A limited 1 year warranty.
Delay acceleration at stop sign/red light : car moves very slow after pressing the gas paddle, engine revs 3-4K. It is really a safety issue when it comes to left turns with incoming traffic. Car move slow after complete stop with pressed gas paddle.
I've been experiencing ongoing transmission problems with my car for over 2 years now. The most common problem is when I come to a complete stop, then step on the gas, the car hesitates for about 5 seconds and then takes off very quickly. This happens intermittently, usually after the car has been running for about 15 minutes (or more) although I have had it happen after running for shorter periods of time. If I turn the car off and back on, it does solve the problem temporarily. I can't even count how many times this has happened to me - probably more than 100. My biggest concern with this issue is when I'm at a multi-way stop sign with at least 1 other car at the intersection. It may be my turn to go and I'm trying to go, but other cars may perceive that I'm waiting to let them go. I've taken it to 2 different dealerships and they have not been able to replicate the problem, but most recently, I did send one of those dealerships a video showing the problem. My first report to a dealership was on 6/24/2020 and I've reported it several times since, but they have not done anything to fix it since they were not able to replicate the problem themselves. I sent a video on 7/17/2022 but have yet to hear a response from Nissan. Another issue I've had is general loss of power or inability to shift out of low gear (which has only happened a handful of times, i.e., less than 5 times). For example, merging on a busy highway with a short merge lane and my car had very little power to merge in a small window. And once merged, the car wouldn't shift past 2nd gear, limiting my speed. The second example, I was stopped going up a hill and when I stepped on the gas, I had no power, then it seemed to have a little power but would not shift out of first gear. In both instances, I pulled over and turned the car off and back on and it was ok again. I listed a date below but this is an ongoing issue.
After being stopped, waiting to turn left at an intersection, pressing on the gas pedal produced no acceleration for several seconds. This is not he first time that this has happened and could easily lead to an accident.
While driving down the highway at 70 mph approximately 23 miles from my house, my car began to jolt and the RPM on the instrument began to fluctuate up and down. I heard the sound of the car braking, but I was not on the brakes. There was no warning light (engine light was not lit at that time). I was able to drive the car 23 miles back to my house with it jolting and with the sounds of sudden braking. I was fearful that the car would stop on the road. I took the car in to a local repair shop on 07/29/22 because our local Nissan dealership was backup for two weeks and could not check it out. While driving I experienced the same problems then the engine light came on. My car began to rumble and shake. I was able to drive it to have it to have it checked out, not without some hesitation when putting the car in drive. The technician checked the OBD and it gave him a transmission code. I drove my car to the local Nissan dealership and they informed me several days later that the transmission has gone out and cost $6500 to repair. Of course the extended warranty is out. There should be no way the transmission should have gone out at 78,000 miles. I have a 2010 Nissan and have never experienced transmission issues and it has well over 120,000 miles.
Headlights are dim. I am aware that there is a settlement in place where Nissan extended the warranty to 6 years. My car is in this warranty period. The headlights are dim and getting worse, I have taken it to the Nissan dealership and they test them and note that there is not a problem, but it is difficult to drive at night and it is a safety issue.
My problem began about a year to a year and a half ago. When I come to a full stop, and I press the accelerator pedal down, the engine does not rev, the RPM’s do not go up and the car does not move for about 3-5 seconds, and then the car just starts accelerating rapidly all of a sudden. This problem has been persistent and very random. It has occured countless times and at first I thought oh, that’s weird, maybe the car was just on an incline but that was not the case because it kept happening over and over. This problem has become more persistent and it is very scary, as whenever I am trying to turn left at a green light at a busy intersection, there have been times that I was almost hit by an on-coming car because my car would just roll for about 3-5 seconds, regardless of how far down I pressed the accelerator pedal, and then it would very rapidly accelerate all at once. I do not know what the issue could be, there has never been a check-engine light, nor any errors or codes. My mechanic can’t do anything for me as they do not know what the problem could be. I urge you, can you please, please help me with this by issuing a recall, or contact Nissan on me and many other Nissan Altima owners behalf as there is a lot of evidence that this problem is very wide-spread. My car currently has 47,000 miles on the odometer, and I have done regular maintenance as required in the owners manual. I simply do not know what to do, and I also do not want to keep driving a car that potentially puts my own life, as well as other road users at risk. Please I urge you to look into this problem and contact me as soon as possible. At this point I would really like to resplve this issue as soon as physically possible.
Know issue by Nissan with 2013-17 Altima. I experienced Pedal throttle delay response with no engine acceleration. They have identified the issue in the vehicles , but will not fix. I just took my vehicle to the dealer today and they said that they could not find anything wrong. I found many online forums and Nissan documents outlining the issue just as I have experienced. Nissan service bulletin NTB16-110L
The contact owns a 2017 Nissan Altima. The contact stated that on two separate occasions, the center light console located on the roof in between the front driver and passenger seat had fallen off while driving at various speeds. After the initial failure, the vehicle was taken to a dealer where the console was repaired free of charge. The contact stated that almost two years after the initial failure, the same failure reoccurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer and the contact was provided an estimate for the repair. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure and informed the contact that there were no recalls or warranties on the vehicle. The contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline to file a complaint. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000.
