DEFECTIVE IGNITION COILS IN MANY/MOST 2000-2003 NISSAN MAXIMA'S (MINE INCLUDED) IS NOT BEING RECONCILED IN GOOD FAITH BY NISSAN. NISSAN HAS BEEN AWARE OF THIS ISSUE FOR MANY YEARS -(CARS SPUTTER AND FAIL TO ACCELERATE CREATING HIGH-RISK SITUATIONS) BUT WILL NOT ASSIST WITH COST TO REPAIR OR REPLACE DEFECTIVE PARTS (IGNITION COILS). REPAIR WORK TYPICALLY COSTS OWNERS $600-900. I PURCHASED AS A "CERTIFIED" USED CAR BUT APPARENTLY THAT MEANT NOTHING FOR THIS SPECIFIC PROBLEM. 2000 NISSAN MAXIMA SE WITH 56,000 MILES. MIL LIGHT TURNED ON WHILE DRIVING AND STAYED ON. NO KNOCKING OR POWER LOSS. WENT TO DEALER AND FOUND DTC P1320 STORED. DEALER SAID NISSAN RECOMMENDS TO REPLACE ALL 6 IGNITION COILS ! COST ME $800 AND NISSAN AND DEALER REFUSED TO HELP PAY FOR THE DEFECT. THIS DEFECT IS REGULAR FOR 1995-2001 MAXIMAS BUT NISSAN REFUSED TO RECALL IT OR FIX IT UNDER WARRANTY ! THEY KNOW ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AS THEY HAVE A TSR OUT FOR THIS. THE DEALER TOLD ME MANY 2000 MAXIMAS ARE HAVING THIS PROBLEM FIXED. BUT THEY DON'T WANT TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY *LA
SIGNIFICANT DEEP CRACKS HAVE DEVELOPED AROUND THE CIRCUMFERENCE OF THE SIDEWALL OF THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE JUST INSIDE OF WHERE THE TREAD SURFACE MEETS THE SIDEWALL. IT APPEARS THAT THE TREAD SURFACE IS PREPARING TO SEPARATE. MY TIRES HAVE 26,000 MILES OF LIGHT-NORMAL DRIVING.*AK
THE REMOTE THAT CONTROLLED THE DOOR LOCKS MALFUNCTIONED. WHEN THE REMOTE WAS CLOSE TO THE VEHICLE IT CAUSED THE TRUCK TO POP OPEN UNEXPECTEDLY. THE REMOTE'S BATTERY WAS CHANGED BUT THE PROBLEM PERSISTED. NISSAN CUSTOMER AFFAIRS WAS CONTACTED. *AK *NM
IGNITION COIL FAILURE. ENGINE PING AND LOSES POWER WHEN ACCELERATING RESULTING IN DANGEROUS SITUATIONS WHEN MERGING INTO TRAFFIC ON HIGHWAY. MANUFACTURER REFUSE TO COVER REPLACEMENT UNDER POWER TRAIN WARRANTY. *CB
#5 IGNITION COIL EXPERIENCING MALFUNCTION. AFTER RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET FOUND THERE TO BE QUITE A NUMBER OF MAXIMA OWNERS EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM, YET A RECALL WAS NOT ISSUED. IN FACT, THE REPLACEMENT PART IS A REDESIGNED IGNITION COIL. THIS SAYS TO ME THAT NISSAN WAS AWARE THE PARTS ARE FAULTY, AND THERE ARE SIX IGNITION COILS IN THE 2000 MAXIMA. NISSAN CUSTOMER CARE WOULD NOT TAKE CARE OF THIS MATTER AND I HAD TO FIX ON MY OWN. HAD THIS FAILED A FEW MONTHS EARLIER, AND MY CAR STILL IN WARRANTY, NISSAN WOULD HAVE REPLACE ALL 6 COILS, NOT JUST THE ONE THAT WAS MALFUNCTIONING. *LA
BATTERY EXPLODED WHEN IGNITION TURNED ONE CLICK TO "ON" POSITION. VEHICLE WAS IN GARAGE. HEARD A BOOM WHEN I TURNED KEY. OPENED HOOD TO SEE SMOKE AND A DAMAGED BATTERY. CAPS WERE BLOWN CLEAR, TOP OF CELL WAS CRACKED IN 4 PLACES. BATTERY ACID SPRAYED HOOD AND SURROUNDING AREA.*AK
IGNITION COIL WIRES HAVE GONE BAD. *AK
IGNITION COILS HAVE FAILED AND BEEN REPLACED AND NOW ABS/TCS INDICATOR LIGHTS FLASH ON AND OFF; DEALER TOLD ME ABS WAS NOT OPERATIONAL IF THE LIGHT WAS ON, BUT ABS IS OPERATIONAL BASED ON SELF-TEST ON THE ROAD. BASED ON THE NUMBER OF ELECTRICAL/IGNITION COMPLAINTS, IT IS CLEARLY AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM THAT NISSAN AND/OR THE DEALER IS NOT ADDRESSING.*AK
WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY MY 2000 MAXIMA SUDDENLY SPUN OUT OF CONTROL FOR NO APPARENT REASON. THE VEHICLE SPUN AROUND SEVERAL TIMES AND DOWN INTO A TWENTY FOOT DITCH, COLLIDING WITH SEVERAL TREES. THE AIR BAG NEVER DEPLOYED. *NLM
THE "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" LIGHT HAS COME ON 3 TIMES WITHIN THE LAST YEAR, STARTING AT 25,290 MILES. THE FIRST 2 TIMES, MY MECHANIC SAID THE SCAN CODE PO 420 SHOWED A PROBLEM WITH THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER AND HE RESET THE COMPUTER. THE THIRD TIME IT CAME ON, I TOOK THE CAR TO THE NISSAN DEALER, AND THEY REPLACED NOTHING, BUT "REPROGRAMMED" THE COMPUTER TO CLEAR IT, AND CHARGED ME $147. MY MAXIMA HAS ONLY 32,013 MILES AND HAS BEEN SERVICED REGULARLY. THIS IS A RIP OFF. *NLM
I OWN A 2000 NISSAN MAXIMA. SINCE THE PURCHASE IN 2000 WE HAVE HAD SEVERAL PROBLEMS WITH THE ELECTRICAL. BLOWN FUSES, IGNITION COILS REPLACED, ETC. WHEN MY POWER WINDOWS STOPPED WORKING, THEN MY DOOR LOCKS, THEN MY LIGHTS I DECIDED TO TAKE IT TO AN INDEPENDANT MECHANIC. UNDER THE DRIVER'S SEAT THERE ARE 3 MOTORS, ALL WITH WIRING. THE WIRING WAS RUN IN SUCH A WAY THAT WIRES HAD BEEN RUBBED & PRESSED AGAINST METAL PARTSF OF THE VEHICLE, LEAVING BARE WIRES EXPOSED. SO, WHEN YOU WOULD SIT ON THE SEAT THE WIRES WOULD TOUCH METAL AND SHORT OUT. I FEEL FORTUNATE THAT I WAS NOT A VICTIM OF A FIRE BENEATH THE SEAT WHICH I BELIEVE WOULD HAVE BEEN THE ULTIMATE OUTCOME. I THINK THIS SHOULD BE CHECKED OUT TO SEE IF IT IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS YEAR AND MAKE OF VEHICLE. 2000 NISSAN MAXIMA SE. THANK YOU. *AK
THE COIL HAS GONE OUT ON MY 2000 NISSAN MAXIMA TWICE NOW THE FIRST TIME CATCHING ON FIRE. THE FIRST TIME I JUST THOUGHT THAT IT WAS JUST A PART THAT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, AFTER A LITTLE RESEARCH I NOW BELIEVE THAT THIS IS A DEFECTIVE PART THAT NEEDS TO BE RECALLED.*AK
AT ABOUT 75,000 MILES, ENGINE WOULD TAKE A LITTLE LONGER TO START ESPECIALLY IN RAINY WEATHER. IT SOUNDED LIKE IT WAS TAKING LONGER FOR FUEL TO GET TO ENGINE. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AT 80,000 MILES. CODE INDICATED BAD CATALYTIC CONVERTOR. MECHANIC RESET AND A FEW THOUSAND MILES LATER IT CAME ON AGAIN. MECHANIC DETERMINED THAT BOTH OXYGEN SENSORS WERE DEFECTIVE AND THEY HAD TO BE REPLACED TO PASS SMOG CHECK FOR $460 ALSO, AT ABOUT 80,000 MILES, CAR HAD INTERMITANT ACCELERATION PROBLEMS WHICH BECAME MORE PROBLEMATIC IN RAINY WEATHER. I WOULD FLOOR ACCELERATOR AND NOTHING WOULD HAPPEN. MECHANIC PRESSURE TESTED FUEL PUMP AND FOUND IT TOO LOW AND REPLACED FUEL PUMP FOR $478. THIS SOLVED PROBLEM FOR A FEW MONTHS AND IT BEGAN HAPPENING AGAIN. THEN, ONE DAY I TRIED TO BACK OUT OF MY GARAGE AND IT WOULDN'T GO IN REVERSE WHEN I SHIFTED IT. I PUSHED MY CAR OUT OF GARAGE AND WAS ABLE TO GET IT TO GO IN DRIVE. WHILE DRIVING TO MECHANIC'S, I PUT CAR IN CRUISE CONTROL AND IT WOULD LOSE POWER INTERMITANTLY TRYING TO MAINTAIN THE SET SPEED. I TOOK IT OUT OF CRUISE CONTROL AND FLOORED THE ACCELERATOR AND THE SAME PREVIOUS PROBLEM OCCURRED. IT REVED ENGINE BUT NOTHING WOULD HAPPEN. WHEN I GOT TO MECHANIC, IT WOULD GO IN REVERSE. HE DETERMINED THAT IT WAS THE TRANSMISSION THAT DIDN'T GIVE ENOUGH CLUTCH PRESSURE UNTIL IT WAS DRIVEN FOR A WHILE. IT WAS A FAILING TRANSMISSION THAT CAUSED THIS AND THE INABILITY TO ACCELERATE. IT WOULD COST OVER $3,000 TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION. I HAD TO REPLACE DEFECTIVE FRONT AND REAR STRUTS, FRONT TIE ROD GREASE BOOT, COMPRESS COIL SPRING, TIE ROD OUTER END AT 134,000 MILES FOR $1100. AT 137,000 MILES, THE EGR VALVE & GASKET FELL OUT WHILE I WAS DRIVING. MECHANIC DETERMINED THAT THE EGR VALVE HOUSING WAS BROKEN AND IT WAS REPLACED FOR $340. DUE TO THE AMOUNT OF MONEY SPENT ON THIS VEHICLE, I CANNOT AFFORD $3000 TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION AND WILL BE SELLING MY FIRST AND LAST NISSAN VEHICLE EVER.
2000 NISSAN MAXIMA - IGNITION COILS FAILING PRE-MATURELY. LOSS OF POWER. *AK
"SERVICE ENGINE" LIGHT CAME ON.DEALER(MAROONE NISSAN) STATED IGNITION COILS NEEDED REPLACING.CAR HAD 14,000 MILES ON IT,BUT WAS 4 MONTHS OVER WARRANTY.DEALER OFFERED NO CHARGE FOR COILS,BUT $200 FOR LABOR.I DECLINED SINCE CAR WAS RUNNING FINE.THE INITIAL INCIDENT WAS MAY,2003. SINCE THAT TIME LIGHT HAS GONE OFF AND ON SEVERAL TIMES.I HAVE TRIED TO CONTACT MARRONE'S SERVICE MANAGER(CHRIS GARELL) SEVERAL TIMES AND CALLS WERE NOT RETURNED.I THEN CALLED NISSAN'S MAIN NUMMBER-SPOKE TO "MARCELL".EXPLAINED PROBLEM TO HIM-HE SAID I'LL GET BACK TO YOU.HE NEVER DID.ON JUNE 18 ,I WROTE A PERSONAL LETTER TO NISSAN'S CEO.NO RESPONSE.I NOTED ON YOUR WEBSITE THAT 31 FAILURES LIKE MINE OCCURED.I FEEL THAT NISSAN SHOULD REPLACE THESE COILS,NO CHARGE,SINCE THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A MANUFACTURING DEFECT.THIS COMPANY DOES NOT HAVE THE COURTESY TO DISCUSS THIS PROBLEM WITH ME.THAT REALLY BOTHERS ME!*AK
PROBLEMS WITH IGNITION COILS ON VEHICLE.*MR THE VEHICLE'S IGNITION COIL FAILED WHICH CAUSED THE SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT TO ILLUMINATE ON THE DASH. ALTHOUGH THE VEHICLE ONLY HAD 14000 MILES ON IT THE WARRANTY EXPIRED FOUR MONTHS AGO. *NM
I PURCHASED A USED 2000 NISSAN MAXIMA THAT HAD 28,000 MILES ON IT ALMOST 3 YEARS AGO. I HAVE ONLY PUT 6,000 MILES ON THE CAR, BUT HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT BEING ON ALMOST CONTINUOUSLY SINCE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE. I TOOK IT TO MY REGULAR MECHANIC WHEN IT HAD TO PASS SMOG INSPECTION. HE TEMPORARILY FIXED THE ENGINE LIGHT PROBLEM, BUT SOON AS I ACCELERATED OVER 50 MILES PER HOUR, THE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. I HAVE ALSO HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE BRAKES, WHICH HAD TO BE COMPLETELY REPLACED TWICE, THE IGNITION (CAR WOULDN'T START), AND, A PROBLEM WITH THE CAR WHEN DOWNSHIFTING (ENGINE SEIZES UP VIOLENTLY). THERE IS ALSO A SUSPENSION PROBLEM, AS CAR MAKES LOUD NOISE EVERY TIME I HAVE TO GO OVER SPEED BUMPS. MY SON IS READY TO GET HIS DRIVER'S LICENSE, AND I WILL HAVE TO GET RID OF THIS CAR AT A LOSS, AS I DO NOT FEEL THE CAR IS SAFE FOR HIM TO DRIVE. *JB
I HAVE A 2000 NISSAN MAXIMA AND THERE IS A LEAK ON THE RIGHT AND LEFT SIDE OF MY CAR AND THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP IS STATING THAT IT IS SOMETHING WITHIN MY TRANSMISSION AND THAT THE BEARINGS AR WORN AND THE AXLE IS MOVING AROUND TOO MUCH. THE COST IS 1150.00 TO 1400.00 MY CAR IS FAIRLY NEW AND I CANNOT UNDERSTAND WHY THIS IS OCCURRING. THEY ARE STATING THEY HAVE TO REMOVE THE ENTIRE TRANSMISSION TO FIND OUT WHERE THE LEAK IS COMING FROM. *NLM

I AM AN OWNER OF A 2000 NISSAN MAXIMA SE. SHORTLY AFTER BUYING MY CAR IN AUGUST OF 2000, I HAVE FOUND MANY PROBLEMS WITH MY CAR. ONE PROBLEM IS A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT THAT KEEPS COMING ON. IT HAS BEEN CHECKED OUT WITH THE DEALER, AND WHILE THEY TURN IT OFF, IT HAS COME ON TWICE MORE. THE SECOND PROBLEM IS A VIBRATION THAT COMES FROM THE FRONT END FO THE CAR, AND IS FELT THROUGH THE STEERING WHEEL. THIS OCCURS DURING DEACCELERATION AT SPEEDS OF 60 MPH OR HIGHER. THIS HAS ALSO BEEN BROUGHT TO THE ATTENTION OF THE DEALER WHICH SAYS THE PROBLEM IS DUE TO WARPED ROTORS. I HAVE CHANGED THEM TWICE SINCE PURCHASING THE VEHICLE, AND THE CAR ONLY NOW HAS 37,000 MILES. FINALLY THERE IS A CONSTANT ROUGHNESS TO THE RIDE OF THE CAR AS IF THERE IS NO SUSPENSION SUPPORTING THE CAR. ALSO THERE IS A CONSTANT CLICKING NOISE COMING FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. COMPLAINTS AND REPAIRS HAVE BEEN BROUGHT TO THE ATTENTION AND DONE BY THE DEALER, BUT PROBLEMS STILL PERSIST.
FRONT BRAKE ROTORS HAVE BEEN FIXED 3 TIMES WITHIN 30,000 MILES. THE CAR WAS SHAKING AND VIBRATING WHEN DRIVING ABOVE 55 MPH.*AK
THE "SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT" COMES ON ABOUT ONCE A MONTH. MY AUTOMOBILE MECHANIC HAS TURNED OFF THE LIGHT EACH TIME. HE SAYS THAT THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER IS EITHER WEAKENING OR THEIR IS A DEFECT IN THE LIGHT. I FIND IT ALARMING ESPECIALLY WHEN I'M DRIVING AND I WORRY ABOUT IT EACH TIME IT COMES ON.
CAR WAS LEASED IN 2000, BROUGHT IT IN TO THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP IN 2002 FOR A REPAIR. THE CAR WAS ALMOST STALLING OUT AT LIGHTS. DEALERSHIP SAID THERE WAS A FAULTY COIL AND REPLACED. HOWEVER, 4 YEARS LATER THE SAME THING HAPPENED AND WHEN I BROUGHT THIS TO THE LOCAL MECHANIC THEY SAID THERE WAS A TSB FROM 2001 THAT SAID NISSAN RECOMMENDS REPLACING ALL 6 COILS. WHEN I CALLED NISSAN AFTER FINDING THIS OUT, THEY BASICALLY SAID YOUR CAR ISN'T UNDER WARRANTY AND WE DON'T GRANDFATHER THESE IN. MY QUESTION IS, WHY DIDN'T THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP LOOK A THEIR OWN TSB AND REPLACE ALL OF THESE WHILE UNDER WARRANTY? *NM
IGNITION COIL FAILED, THIS IS A DEFECTIVE PART, SO MANY HAVE FAILED ON THIS MODEL. THAT NONE ARE AVAILABLE AND NISSAN IS LOOKING AT DIFFERENT MANUFACTURERS BECAUSE OF THE NUMBER OF PROBLEMS. DT

CONSUMER BROUGHT VEHICLE IN FOR REPLACEMENT OF THE CYLINDER IGNITION COIL. THE REPLACEMENT PART WAS NOT COVERED UNDER ANY VEHICLE WARRANTIES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN IN FOR SERVICE BECAUSE IT WAS MIS FIRING UNDER DRIVING CONDITIONS AND WAS HAZARDOUS TO DRIVE. THE POWER TRAIN DID NOT OPERATE PROPERLY TO DELIVER POWER FROM THE ENGINE TO THE WHEELS. *JG
CONSUMER STATES THAT THE VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A FRONTAL COLLISION AND THE DRIVER SEAT BELT FAIL TO LOCK UP PROPERLY, CAUSES INJURIES TO THE DRIVER CHEST HITTING THE STEERING WHEEL. DEALER NOTIFIED. NLM THE AIR BAG FAILED TO DEPLOY DURING THE ACCIDENT. *YH

WHILE DRIVING AT 40-50 MPH, CONSUMER FAINTED AND THE VEHICLE RAN INTO THE GUARDRAIL ON ITS RIGHT FRONT END. NONE OF THE FRONT AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. *AKCONSUMER SUFFERED NECK INJURIES. *JG
EVERY FIFTEEN THOUSAND MILES FRONT BRAKE ROTORS HAVE TO BE REPLACED DUE TO WARPING. CONSUMER OWNS TWO OF THE SAME VEHICLES, BUT DIFFERENT YEARS, BOTH EXPERIENCE THE SAME PROBLEM. *AK
BOUGHT THE MAXIMA NEW AND AT 12000 MILES HAD TO HAVE THE ROTORS TURNED. THE DEALER AND NISSAN SAID IT WAS MY DRIVING HABITS. I PROMPTLY TOLD THEM THAT THIS IS THE FIRST CAR I HAD THIS DONE TO (OTHER THAN A USED 74 VEGA I HAD IN HIGH SCHOOL). NOW THE CAR IS AT 22,000 MILES (AND IS ONLY A LITTLE OVER 3 YEARS OLD) AND THE VIBRATION IS BACK. THE FIRST TIME THEY TURNED THE ROTORS IT COST ME $120 (BUT AFTER COMPLAINING TO NISSAN THEY GAVE ME A &100 SERVICE CREDIT). BUT I HAVE TO DO IT AGAIN AND THINK THAT IT IS CERTAINLY NOT MY DRIVING HABITS THAR ARE CAUSING THIS. AND THE COMMERCIALS THEY HAD PROMOTED THIS CAR AS SOME KIND OF SPORTS CAR ('CARS LIKE IT - 0') DRIVING VERY FAST ON THE SALT LAKES WHERE SPEED RECORDS ARE SET. MY PROBLEM WAS I BELIEVED THE COMMERCIAL. OTHER THAN THIS I AM HAPPY WITH THE CAR, BUT AM CONSIDERING REPLACING THE ROTORS WITH SOME OTHER MANUFACTURER'S IF THAT IS POSSIBLE.

WHILE TRAVELING 55 MPH AN OVERSIZED TRUCK WAS BACKING UP AND HIT CONSUMER'S VEHICLE. UPON IMPACT, AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY AT ANY TIME. MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED. *AK TWO PEOPLE WERE INJURED. *JG

ROTORS CAUSE SEVERE DRIEVABILITY PROBLEMS AT SPEEDS OVER 40 MPH AND MAY IMPACT EFFECTIVESNESS OF ABS SYSTEM. *AK
CONSUMER STATES THAT WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE WILL AUTOMATICALLY SHUT OFF IT HAPPENS AT ANY SPEED. HAS TAKEN THE VEHICLE 5 TIMES IN THE DEALER AND ALSO THEY HAVE HAD IT IN THE DEALER SINCE JANUARY OF 2002 BUT THEY CANNOT FIND THE PROBLEM. NLM

WHILE ACCELERATING INTO TRAFFIC VEHICLE HESITATES. VEHICLE WILL SHUTDOWN WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING.*AK
VEHICLE HAS STALLED 3 TIMES WHEN COMING TO A STOP. WAS TAKEN TO DEALER TWICE. IAC VALVE WAS REPLACED, DID NOT REMEDY THE PROBLEM.*AK
VEHICLE WOULD EXHIBIT LOSS OF POWER, MISFIRING AND LOUD PINGING NOISES AT HALF THROTTLE OR MORE WHEN PASSING OR ACCELERATING INTO HIGHWAY TRAFFIC AND WHEN PASSING AT ANY SPEED. ALSO, THE ENGINE HAD AN INTERMITTENT ROUGH IDLE PROBLEM. ROUGH ENOUGH TO SHAKE ENTIRE VEHICLE AND EITHER FORCE ME TO PULL OVER OR PREVENT ME FROM DRIVING OFF SAFELY. WHEN I LET THE ENGINE COOL I WOULD CONTINUE THE TRIP HOPING THE PROBLEM WOULD NOT RECUR. BOTH PROBLEMS WERE DETERMINED TO BE IGNITION COIL(S) RELATED. ALL SIX COILS WERE REPLACED BECAUSE NO DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE "DTC" TO PINPOINT AN INDIVIDUAL COIL HAD REGISTERED AT THE ECU COMPUTER ALONG WITH NO SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT "SES". THE VEHICLE WAS LESS THAN THREE YEARS OLD BUT HAD 37,500 MILES. THESE COILS ARE ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS AND ARE AFFECTED BY AGE AND/OR DESIGN AND NOT BY MILES DRIVEN. I DID NOT QUALIFY FOR WARRANTY REPAIR. *JB
