IN ADDITION, WHEN SHIFTING GEARS WHILE DRIVING OVER 20 MPH, THE ENGINE WOULD REV. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A PRIVATE MECHANIC, WHO STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS DUE TO A GEAR SHIFT MALFUNCTION. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 88,700 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 94,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.

2004 NISSAN MAXIMA TRANSMISSION FAILURE. THE TRANSMISSION JERKS WHEN SHIFTING FROM 1 TO 2ND GEAR AND IT JERKS WHEN SHIFTING FROM 1ST GEAR TO 2ND. IT JERKS WHILE DRIVING AND IT GETS STUCK. IT GOT STUCK WHILE I WAS DRIVING UP A PARKING GARAGE RAMP AND IT WOULD NOT MOVE. WHEN I LET GO OF THE GAS IT BACKED UP ON ITS OWN AND I AM GRATEFUL THE CAR BEHIND ME HAD ALREADY MOVED BACK OR IT WOULD OF CAUSED A COLLISION. THE CAR ONLY HAS 78K MILES AND HAS BEEN VERY WELL TAKEN CARE OF. TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION IT COSTS ME $3500!! A CAR WITH ONLY 78KMILES SHOULD NOT NEED A TRANSMISSION REPLACED! *TR
THE PASSENGER FLOOR BOARD HAS RUSTED THROUGH CREATING A HOLE ABOUT 7" BY 14" UNDER THE CARPET. NISSAN WAS CONTACTED THROUGH OUR LOCAL DEALER IN MAY AND NISSAN RESPONDED THAT THEY WOULD NOT REPAIR THE ISSUE WITHOUT COST TO US. IN INVESTIGATING IT IS INTERESTING TO NOTE THAT THE PANEL THAT IS RUSTED OUT APPEARS TO BE PAINTED IN A GREEN GLOSS PRIMER WHEN THE REMAINDER OF THE FLOOR IS THE BODY COLOR OF WHITE. IN SEARCHING THE INTERNET IT APPEARS THAT THERE ARE MANY OTHER MAXIMA OWNERS WITH THE SAME ISSUE. THE CAR IS GARAGE KEPT IN OHIO, AND RARELY HAS A PASSENGER ON THAT SIDE. CAR IS IN MY WIFE'S NAME.

TRANSMISSION HANGS INBETWEEN PARK REVERSE NEUTRAL AND DRIVE. JERKS WHEN SHIFTING BETWEEN 1ST AND 2ND. *TR
AFTER THE CAR GETS HOT, IT WILL REV VERY HIGH GOING FROM 2ND TO 3RD GEAR. IT WILL NOT SHIFT INTO 3RD GEAR UNTIL I TAKE MY FOOT OF THE GAS, LET THE RPM'S GO DOWN, THEN HIT THE ACCELERATOR AGAIN. IT WILL ALSO HARD SHIFT GOING FROM PARK TO REVERSE AND REVERSE TO FORWARD GEAR. ALSO WHEN DOWNSHIFTING THE CAR WILL SHIFT HARD, MAINLY GOING TO LOWER GEARS, WHICH CAUSES JOLTS AND UNEXPECTED INCREASES IN THE RPM AS THE SHIFT HAPPENS. THIS IS DANGEROUS BECAUSE IT IS UNEXPECTED AND HAS CAUSED ME TO SLAM ON THE BRAKES IN TRAFFIC, WHEN STARTLED BY THIS ACTION OF THE TRANSMISSION.
WHEN ACCELERATING THERE IS A HARD JERKY STALL SHIFT FROM 1ST TO 2ND GEAR. AFRAID I'M GOING TO BE REAR-ENDED. WHEN DECELERATING, THERE IS A HARD SHIFT JERK FROM 3RD TO 2ND GEAR. REMINDS ME OF SEMI TRUCK ROAD SIGNS (NO ENGINE BRAKE ALLOWED). *TR
THE SKYVIEW ROOF IN MY 2004 NISSAN MAXIMA IS LEAKING WATER. DURING A HARD RAIN WHEN THE CAR IS SITTING STILL FOR MORE THAN ONE HOUR, WATER WILL RUN THROUGH THE INTERIOR LAMPS ONTO THE INTERIOR. THIS IS VERY ANNOYING TO THE POINT THAT I HATES WHEN IT RAINS. I HAVE TO PLACE A LARGE BATH TOWEL OVER THE DASHBOARD AND GEAR LEVER TO HELP PREVENT WATER AND ELECTRICAL DAMAGE! I ALSO THE BACK SEAT GETS WET. *TR
I BOUGHT A USED 2004 NISSAN MAXIMA SE AND I'M HAVING PROBLEMS THE JERKING, THRUSTING FORWARD AND THE BAD DOWN SHIFTING. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP ACT LIKE THEY NEVER HEARD OF A PROBLEM BEFORE AND THEY SAID THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED A FLUSH ($200), SO I DID, IT CONTINUED KICKING. I TOOK IT BACK TO NISSAN THEY DROVE IT AND TOLD ME IT NEED MOTOR MOUNTS ($2,000), I GOT THE MOTOR MOUNTS REPLACED AT LOCAL AUTO SHOP. THEY HAVE NO PROBLEM WANTING ME TO SPENDING MONEY ON DIAGNOSIS THE PROBLEM, WHEN THEY KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS. THE TRANSMISSION IS A RECALL ISSUE THEY DON?T WANT TO MAKE PUBLIC. I?M VERY DISAPPOINTED IN NISSAN. I?VE HAD 2 ALTIMA, I HAVE A 1997 MAX AND NEVER HAD MAJOR ISSUES (I DRIVE THAT MORE THAN THE NEW CAR) AND I HAVE A 2004 ARMADA, I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THEM TO ANYONE ANY MORE. THEY PRIDE THEMSELVES IN NOT SELLING LEMONS...WELL I GOT ONE! I DON?T UNDERSTAND HOW I CAN HAVE 1997 MAX AND NOT HAVE TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS AND NEW MODEL CAR 2004 AND HAVING ALL THESE ISSUES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO ADVISED THAT THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS 2004 NISSAN MAXIMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED AND THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER ADVISED THAT THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NEED REPLACING. THE DEALER DID NOT STATE WHAT CAUSED THE TRANSMISSION TO FAIL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 63,000.
MY 2004 NISSAN MAXIMA TRANSMISSION WENT BAD AS I WAS DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE. I WAS DRIVING ABOUT 55 MPH AND ALL OF A SUDDEN THE ENGINE STARTED TO REV AND I HAD NO POWER TO THE WHEELS/DRIVE TRAIN. THE TRANSMISSION WENT WITHOUT ANY WARNING. I DID ALSO EXPERIENCE THE ROUGH SHIFTING THAT MANY OTHERS HAD COMPLAINED ABOUT. I ONLY HAVE 69000 MILES ON IT. THE CAR IS 9000 MILES OUT OF DRIVE TRAIN WARRANTY. I ALWAYS TOOK THE CAR TO A AUTHORIZED NISSAN DEALER PAYING G THE HIGHER SERVICE COSTS. I DID THIS IN CASE I EVER HAD A PROBLEM THINKING THAT THE MANUFACTURE WOULD THEN STAND BY THE CAR. I GOT NOTHING. THE DEALER WAS NOT ABLE TO HELP. I CALLED NISSAN MOTORS OF AMERICA AND I TOLD THEM ABOUT MY SITUATION. NISSAN TOLD ME THERE IS NOTHING THEY COULD DO FOR ME. I ASKED WHY, THEY SAID THE CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY. I SAID I KNOW THE CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY, THAT IS WHY I'M CALLING THE CONSUMER AFFAIRS LINE. I TOLD THEM THAT I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER FOR ALL MY SERVICE, THAT I ALWAYS PURCHASED ALL THE PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE THAT THE MANUFACTURE AND DEALER RECOMMEND, I'M THE ORIGINAL OWNER AND THAT I ONLY DRIVE THE CAR TO WORK. I ASKED WHAT IS THE CRITERIA FOR NISSAN TO ASSIST A CUSTOMER IF A CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY. THEY SAID THAT THEY LOOK AT WHAT MAINTENANCE WAS DONE AT A AUTHORIZED DEALER AND WAS THE CAR OWNED BY THE ORIGINAL OWNER. I SAID THAT I HAD DONE ALL OF THIS. I ASKED WHY THEY CAN'T HELP, THEY AGAIN SAID BECAUSE THE CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY. I WENT ONLINE AND READ ABOUT THE 500 PLUS TRANSMISSION COMPLAINTS. IT NOW MAKES SENSE WHY NISSAN WILL NOT HELP US. THEY KNOW THEY HAVE A TRANSMISSION PROBLEM AND DON'T WANT TO PUT OUT A RECALL. THE COST IS ABOUT $3800. IS THIS GROUNDS FOR A CLASS ACTION SUIT? NISSAN DOES NOT STAND BY IT'S CARS. UPDATED 05/25/11
THE FAILURE IS WITH THE ABS SYSTEM ON MY 2004 MAXIMA. THERE IS A DOCUMENTED TSB FOR THIS PROBLEM FOR 2004-07. A POOR DESIGN OF REAR WHEEL ASSEMBLY(BY NISSANS OWN ADMITTANCE) CAUSES WHEEL SENSOR TO PREMATURELY FAIL, CAUSING ABS CONTROLLER/SOLENOID TO FAIL. THIS HAS BEEN DOCUMENTED TO OCCUR WITH LESS THAN 40,000 MILES ON A VEHICLE. THIS IN TURN COMPLETELY DISABLES THE VEHICLE'S ABS SYSTEM. NISSAN REFUSES TO ISSUE A RECALL OR EVEN ASSIST WITH REPAIRS, EVEN WITH ALL OF THE REPORTED INCIDENTS. IN MOST INCIDENTS THAT I FOUND, IT FAILS RIGHT AFTER THE FACTORY WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED. IN MY PARTICULAR CASE, I HAVE AN EXTENDED PRE-OWNED WARRANTY THROUGH NISSAN. THOUGH, NISSAN SAYS THAT IT ISN'T COVERED UNDER MY WARRANTY. REPAIRS ARE ESTIMATED TO COST IN THE AREA OF $2100.00. AS HEAVY AS THE VEHICLES ARE, NOT HAVING FUNCTIONING ABS CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS. I DON'T KNOW EXACTLY HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM, BUT A QUICK SEARCH OF AUTOMOTIVE FORUMS FOR THE NISSAN MAXIMA RETURNED A GREAT AMOUNT, COMPLETELY DESCRIBING THE PROBLEM AND FIX NEEDED. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS 2004 NISSAN MAXIMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ANTILOCK BRAKE SENSORS CAME ON AS SOON AS THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS ENGAGED. THERE WAS ALSO A LOUD NOISE WHEN THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO STATED THAT THE SENSORS AND WHEEL HUB NEEDED TO BE REPLACED BY DRILLING NEW DRAIN HOLES INTO THE WHEEL ASSEMBLY. THE REPAIR WOULD COST $1700 SINCE THERE WERE NO RELATED RECALLS OR WARRANTIES FOR THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND GAVE HIM THE NHTSA HOTLINE NUMBER TO FILE A COMPLAINT. YES I BROUGHT MY 2004 MAXIMA INTO NISSAN DEALERSHIP AT 58,000 MILES FOR LOUD NOISE ON COLD START UP'S, COMING FROM PASSENGER SIDE OF MOTOR AND NISSAN TECH TOLD ME THAT I DIDN'T HAVE NISSAN OIL FILTER AND IT NOT PURGING THE OIL TO TOP OF MOTOR ON COLD STARTS. SO I RECENTLY HAD OIL CHANGE A FEW HUNDRED MILES BEFORE SO NOT CHANGING IT TILL NEXT REQUIRED OIL CHANGE AT 61,000 WHEN IT CAME TIME BROUGHT IT TO NISSAN FOR OIL CHANGE BECAUSE THEY HAVE SPECIAL OIL FILTERS I GUESS. WELL NOW AT 65000 MILES MY NOISE IS THERE ALL THE TIME HOT OR COLD AND COLD START IS THE WORSE AND EVEN WHEN ITS RUNNING, AND ITS NOT THE OIL FILTER THERE'S IS NO DIFFERENT THAN ANY OTHER BRAND AND IT IS THE PLASTIC GUIDES IN THE TIMING CHAIN THAT HAVE FAILED AND NOW IT'S MY PROBLEM TO FIX AROUND 2000 DOLLARS TO FIX AND NISSAN SAYS IT'S OUT OF WARRANTY SO THEY WON'T COVERIT WELL NISSAN WAS WRONG AGAIN NISSAN IS AWARE OF THEIR FAULTY PARTS YOU CAN SEARCH THE ORIGINAL PART NUMBER FOR MY MAXIMA AND YOU WILL FIND A NEW PART NUMBER FOR THE GUIDES BECAUSE NISSAN CHANGED PART NUMBER AND MATERIAL WHEN MAKING THE NEW PART WITHOUT A RECALL OR CONSUMERS KNOWLEDGE OF THEM DOING IT. *TR

ALSO, WHEN COMING TO A STOP THE VEHICLE WOULD ACT AS IF SOMEONE HAD REAR ENDED THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHERE THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED THAT THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE WOULD TAKE THE VEHICLE FOR A SECOND OPINION BEFORE REPAIRS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED AND THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 99,200 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 99,300.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE E WAS 92,000.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE BRAKES WERE RECENTLY SERVICED AND THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER BUT THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE RECURRED ONE WEEK LATER AND THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AGAIN FOR DIAGNOSIS. AGAIN, THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE AND THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 105,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 106,000.

THE CONTACT STATED THE TRANSMISSION SLIPS AND JERKS VERY HARD WHEN GOING BETWEEN GEARS, BUT MOSTLY BETWEEN SECOND AND THIRD GEAR. THE VEHICLE FINALLY STOPPED ALTOGETHER. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING WHEN THE VEHICLE STOPPED MOVING, BUT THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED, BUT DID SPECIFY WHY. THE TRANSMISSION WAS REBUILT FOR THE VEHICLE. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 85,000.
I PURCHASED A 2004 NISSAN MAXIMA IN AUGUST 2006, AND IT ALL SEEMED FINE FOR A BIT BUT ONCE I REACHED ABOUT 84K MILES, THE TRANSMISSION STARTED HAVING PROBLEMS. FIRST, WHEN I SHIFT FROM PARK TO ANY OTHER GEAR. IT SEEMS TO EITHER HESITATE TO SHIFT INTO GEAR AND ONCE IT DOES IT SHIFTS IN A HORRIBLE KNOCK! IT CONTINUES TO DO THE SAME PROBLEM AS WELL AS SLIP GEARS WHILE IN MOTION. IT USUALLY SLIPS FROM 1ST TO 2ND, OR 2ND TO 3RD. IT CAUSES THE CAR TO REV AND SHIFTS WHEN IT WANTS. THAT MAKES IT SNAP EVEN HARDER. I TOOK THE CAR TO A LOCAL TRANSMISSION SHOP WHICH PLACED IT ON THE COMPUTER. THE ERROR WAS A FAULTY CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR (BANK 1). COST WAS $181.52. I'M STILL HAVING THE JERKING WITH SECOND GEAR BUT ONLY WHEN I SLOW DOWN EASILY. THE CAR SHIFTS NOW, BUT THE JERKING CONTINUES. THE LOCAL TRANSMISSION SHOP SAID THAT I WOULD HAVE TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION FOR AROUND $3,500 IN ORDER TO ALLEVIATE THE JERKING AND TRANSMISSION SLIP ISSUE. I BOUGHT A NISSAN BECAUSE THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO BE DEPENDABLE LONG LASTING CARS. I WOULD HOPE THAT IT WOULD LAST OVER AT LEAST 100,000 MILES BEFORE ANY SORT OF PROBLEMS WOULD EVEN OCCUR.
SAME AS EVERYONE ELSE WITH THE SAME MAKE AND MODEL. CAR RPM'S GO WAY HIGH AND THEN JERKS AND GOES INTO GEAR. HAPPENS AFTER THE CAR IS WARMED UP. PARTIAL BRAKE FAILURE WHEN APPROACHING HIGHWAY STOP LIGHT AT 45 MPH, DRY CONDITIONS. BRAKING DISTANCE MORE THAN DOUBLED AS FRONT BRAKES MADE VERY LOUD SCRAPING AND GRINDING SOUNDS (NOT TYPICAL ABS SOUND) WHILE NOT HAVING ANY STOPPING POWER - I APPEARED TO ONLY HAVE REAR BRAKES. WAS ABLE TO STOP JUST INSIDE INTERSECTION. LUCKILY NO TRAFFIC WAS IN WAY, AVOIDING AN ACCIDENT. DEALER IDENTIFIED PROBLEM AS CAUSED BY RUST BUILDUP ON REAR HUBS DUE TO LACK OF A DRAINAGE CHANNEL/PORT ON REAR "KNUCKLES" (SAID DRAINAGE PORT WASN'T THERE), A KNOWN PROBLEM. WATER BACKUP IN KNUCKLE CAUSES RUST ON HUB AND ON ABS SENSORS, RESULTING IN PREMATURE FAILURE OF BOTH ABS SENSORS, WHICH IN MY CASE CAUSED AN UNEXPECTED STOPPING PROBLEM. BOTH REAR HUBS AND ABS SENSORS HAD TO BE REPLACED AT COST OF OVER $1300. CAR IS VERY LOW MILEAGE AND GARAGED. DEALER IDENTIFIED THIS AS A KNOWN PROBLEM AND NISSAN DESCRIBED THE REPAIR IN SERVICE BULLETIN REFERENCE NTB07-016B, ALSO IN NHTSA DATABASE AS SERVICE BULLETIN NUMBER 07016, NHTSA ITEM # 10021681. THIS FAILURE WAS NOT ROUTINE AND ONLY THE LUCK OF THE SITUATION ALLOWED AN ACCIDENT TO BE AVOIDED. THIS KNOWN PROBLEM WAS IDENTIFIED IN 2007 AND I WAS UNAWARE OF IT, THOUGH NISSAN WAS. STILL MAKING PAYMENTS SO WENT BACK TO THE DEALER AND FOUND OUT THEN THE REPAIR THAT WAS COMPLETED 2 YEARS EARLIER WAS THE SECOND REPAIR DONE TO THE TRANSMISSION. THE WARRANTY THAT CAME WITH THE REPAIR HAD EXPIRED AND NOW I AM LEFT WITH A VEHICLE I AM STILL MAKING PAYMENTS ON, CAN'T DRIVE AND NOW HAVE TO COME UP WITH A WAY TO PAY $2500-$3000 FOR A NEW TRANSMISSION. TRANSMISSION KEEPS JERKING OFF. GEARS GET STUCK. *TR
2004 NISSAN MAXIMA TRANSMISSION STARTED TO GO AT 108,000 MILES. CAR HALTS AND THEN BUCKS FROM 1ST TO 2ND GEAR AND FROM 2ND DOWN TO 1ST GEAR. AT A RED LIGHT, CAR HALTED AND BUCKED IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSECTION AND NEARLY CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. NO ACCIDENT OCCURRED, BUT THE PROBLEM CONTINUES TO PERSIST AND THE TRANSMISSION NEEDS REPLACING. MULTIPLE 2004 AND 2005 NISSAN MAXIMA'S HAVE TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS DUE TO INSTALLATION OF FAULTY TRANSMISSIONS, YET NO RECALL HAS BEEN ISSUED. I HAVE FOUND 20-30 INTERNET REPORTS OF FAULTY 2004 AND 2005 NISSAN TRANSMISSIONS. I AM AFRAID THAT THIS CAR COULD DO THE SAME THING IN THE FUTURE WITH A WORSE OUTCOME.
