NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2016 Nissan Rogue. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
The transmission began stuttering and making clunking noises as it was being driven normally down the road. This issue put me and my family at risk because we were not sure if we’d make it home and if the transmission would suddenly lock up leading us to an accident. The car has been gone through by a dealership in Jacksonville NC and was declared to have a faulty transmission. The check engine light turned on right when the stuttering started to occur
The Nissan Rogue 2016 transmission failed at 106,853 miles. The entire transmission had to be replaced at a cost of $4,850 6/19/24
While driving home from work, the Nissan went from 50mph, suddenly down to 4mph. (literally 4mph) Pressing the gas down all the way would not allow the car to move any faster. It would occasionally get up to 15mph, but wouldn't stay. I was LUCKY beyond belief that a car or semi didn't hit me at highway speed before I could move over in rush hour traffic. Both the local dealership and Nissan USA executive offices concluded that this does not fall within the extended warranty forced on them by the NTHSA for many, many similar incidents. The dealer, asking like it was an oil change, asked if I wanted a new $9k transmission. As I can't afford anywhere near that, nor is the car worth it, I was required to drive it home from the dealership, again putting my life at risk. IN ADDITION - a recall repair was requested (the driver door wiring harness) - and the dealership told me that it was completed. They did not complete this recall either. Nissan should not be allowed to make vehicles in the USA. If they actually stood behind their product and made repairs and replacements when there are manufacturing issues, I would feel much better about the situation. For now- I want to ensure no one I care about actually dies from driving a Nissan.
The passenger airbag light always reads OFF even when someone is sitting in the passenger seat.
I was driving down the road and suddenly my back right passenger window imploded, it sounded like a gunshot going off it was so loud and sudden. There had been no previous damage to the window and I was on a completely paved road with no construction or other vehicles near for anything to have hit the window. The glass went inside all over my back seat and even into the trunk area, if my children had been in the backseat they could have been seriously injured and I could have swerved due to being startled but luckily I was able to safely pull over. I took it to the Nissan dealership to see if they could inspect it to see if it was a defect or fault of the vehicle and they told me there was nothing they could do that I would just need to file a claim with my insurance.
The vehicle began experiencing difficulties accelerating especially in instances where acceleration was necessary as in merging onto highways. The car began jerking through acceleration and consequently revving sporadically. I took the vehicle in and was informed the entire transmission needs to be replaced. The car is just passed the warranty in both mileage and the year so the dealership offered no assistance.
Engine stumbles or even stalls out suddenly on acceleration, often at intersections, and then "forward collision warning sensor malfunction" flashes on the screen. Then, when accelerator is pressed further in an attempt to get the vehicle to move, the engine revs and vehicle lurches forward.
The contact owns a 2016 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated while driving 60 MPH, the contact noticed a failure with the transmission. The contact stated that when he attempted to shift the gear shifter, the transmission remained in neutral. There was no warning light illuminated. The dealer was not contacted, and the vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHSTA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 117,000.
Nissan knows their transmissions aren’t good. They are putting bad transmission into cars and scamming people out of money. My transmission just blew with 92,000 miles on it. There was formally a class action lawsuit. They know they have bad transmissions and don’t care
The left rear suspension arm has failed. This part supports the left rear tire and wheel assembly and its failure cause the left rear tire and wheel to tilt to about a 45 degree angle. The car was able to be safely stopped, although control was severely effected. Continued driving would likely have caused the tire and wheel to separate from the vehicle. See attached photo. It appears as if the rear suspension arm welds have broken and or the part has failed due to corrosion. It is a 2016 vehicle with only 105,000 miles. See attached photos. The last photo shows the right rear suspension link, undamaged, to illustrate the extent of degradation on the left side. The Girard Nissan dealership in Groton, CT informed me they have seen a number of cars with this problem, but there has been no recall. The provided a verbal order of magnitude estimate to repair the vehicle, based on photos, at $4,000 or higher.
The contact owns a 2016 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the hatchback was not working as intended. The contact stated that the hatchback opened correctly; however, the hatchback closed automatically, without warning. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer, and the contact was informed that the spindle needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 178,000.
Trunk Lift Gate Trunk will not stay open, it slams back shut, causing injury, risk for closed limbs problem has been confirmed with dealership no warning lights or mesages
CVT transmission on a 2016 Nissan Rogue SL with 43,800 miles. Its available foe inspection. The vehicle transmission jerks, it hesitates, there is revving, and shudders. The problems was reproduced by a Nissan Dealer and inspected with a diagnosis of a bad transmission needing replacement. No warning or lamps before the 1st incident on April 8, 2024.
Driving in the highway and RPM kept going higher but vehicle was slowing down and it happened during bad traffic. Happened again same day at a traffic light, light turned green and my vehicle didn’t move for a short while
Transmission revs and won't shift. At the time I was bringing my husband from VA Hospital. I pulled over and waitedfor a few minutes. I drove to my mechanic and he checked it out and said I need a new transmission. I have had this issue before over the years but this time engine light stayed on.
The contact owns a 2016 Nissan Rogue. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V024000 (Electrical System). The vehicle was taken to the dealer for the recall repair, and the dealer only applied white lithium grease to the electrical connectors. The contact stated that the dealer refused to replace the wiring harness connector and informed the contact that it was not necessary. The contact stated that after the recall repair was performed, the vehicle failed to start. The contact replaced the battery. The vehicle later lost motive power while driving. The contact pushed the vehicle to the side of the road, and the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who replaced the alternator; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the ABS wiring harness, ABS control module, and wheel speed sensor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 51,000.
The contact owns a 2016 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated that while driving at 55 MPH, the vehicle began to jerk. The RPM increased, but the vehicle failed to accelerate. The RPM decreased, and the RPM went to the correct level. After reaching an approximate speed of 40 MPH, the vehicle failed to accelerate further. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact called the local dealer, who informed the contact about having a transmission flush and adding transmission fluid. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 116,000.
The contact owns a 2016 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated that while driving at 20 MPH, the vehicle shut off as a key fob warning symbol appeared on the instrument panel. Due to the failure, the vehicle was initially towed to an independent mechanic and was later towed to the dealer. Two separate diagnostics were performed on the vehicle; however, they were unable to determine the cause of the failure. The dealer later informed the contact that a defective belt located underneath the dashboard may have caused the failure. The mechanic gave the contact an estimate for the repair but warned that the repair may not fix the failure. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was unknown.
My car stopped working at the middle of the freeway, luckily I was going downhill. Just like everyone else it may be a transmission issue, as I pressed the gas the far would not moved. I kept shifting gear and it feels like it’s stuck, I can reverse but only for a little bit but once I press the gas it doesn’t go anywhere.
I recently was notified that my vehicle has a factory recall for the jackknife key. So I brought it to my local Nissan dealership and they said they would fix the recall. After checking out my key and car the dealership said I would have to buy a brand new key which was around $300 dollars. The key is only 3 months old because I changed out the old key because the recall caused the old key to malfunction and not start up the car. They're solution was to put a spacer in the key to fix the recall but then said my car wouldn't turn on if they put in spacer to fix recall. My problem is why would i have to purchase something that is being recalled, also if it's a factory recall that would mean it has to be fixed as part of a federal law. Also, the reason for both keys malfunctioning is because of the recall in the first place. It seems the dealership is trying to get out of fixing this problem and they just want me to buy a new key to fix the issue instead of taking care of it, when it was the manufacturer's fault in the first place. The Nissan dealership is Destination Nissan located at 770 Central Ave, Albany, NY 12206, is there anything that can be done so they fix this issue? I also reached out to Nissan national help line, but they couldn't do anything but reach out to the dealership and ask what happened with no solution. They ended up not fixing the recall or anything on my vehicle and I currently have both keys that are malfunctioning because of Manufacturer Recall Number: R22C9 and NHTSA Recall Number 23V-093. But now I am at risk of key malfunctioning while driving and turning the car off and could cause possible crash, injury or worse. I don't understand how they can do this because under federal law they would need to fix any problems caused by this recall. Please any help would be greatly appreciated. ECU go out and cause vehicle to accelerate when brakes is mashed
Air bag light is on telling that is mulfunctioning
Smell gas inside the car
Rear hatchback power strut/ shocks. Hatch will go up entire way but comes back down automatically, hitting my head , therefore I do not use hatch compartment because of safety issues. Nissan dealer states needs new struts and to check to see if recalled due to fact should have lasted life of vehicle
The contact owns a 2016 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated that the air bag warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer where it was diagnosed that the front passenger’s side air bag needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000.
transmission failure suddenly while driving with no check engine or warning lights.
Vehicle intermittently drops out of gear/will not engage transmission while in use.
While driving home from work, my wife was attempting to merge onto the on-ramp to the highway, and the vehicle jerked violently and RPM's skyrocketed but the speed was barely climbing. The speed didn't rise above 20mph until RPM's reached 4k. We had to creep all the way home with the engine whining and juddering and couldn't go above 45mph. This is extremely dangerous and the mechanics are saying there's nothing they can do other than buy an entirely new transmission because the CVT is complete trash, ,there was all kinds of debris in the bottom of the pan and Nissan is acting like they have no idea what we are talking about. I'm at a complete lost as to why there aren't any recalls for the 2016 Nissan Rogue CVT transmissions!!!!!! This is unsafe and I will never purchase anything affiliated with Nissan!
The contact's daughter owns a 2016 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated that the front passenger's side air bag warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the front passenger's seat Occupant Classification System (OCS) Electronic Control Unit (ECU) and the seat sensors needed to be replaced. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V911000 (Air Bags); however, the dealer informed the contact that the VIN was not included in the recall. The vehicle was not repaired due to the cost. The vehicle was then taken to an independent mechanic, where the same assessment was made, and the mechanic determined that the front passenger's seat assembly and seat belt assembly needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired due to the cost. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 55,000.
Follow up from Nissan district regional manager was the same as the Nissan dealership. They refuse to help and have zero issues sending people off onto the road with an unsafe vehicle that can stall or stop at any time. There needs to be another class action lawsuit opened for all of the people who are still experiencing these problems because there are a ton of Nissan Rogue owners who have transmission issues that the dealership refuses to acknowledge and fix.
I am back at the Nissan dealer to fix a recall but also to express my continued concerns regarding the clunking noise that I keep hearing when I accelerate. A year ago I was told by this same Nissan dealer that it was part of the transmission and there was nothing that they could do for me. Today I requested for it to be looked into again and the report back is they test drove it and hear no noise which is a LIE. I hear it every single time I drive my car and now u am being sent back on the road to drive a car I feel unsafe in. Nissan intentionally ignores you simply because there is no check engine light on despite there being a problem driving the car. They are forcing time to pass on so that the warranty and mileage is past the point of them being accountable to fix the issue. I don’t recommend anyone buying a Nissan rogue because they don’t care whether or not you feel safe.
Good evening, I’m not sure if I’m doing this correctly. The reason I’m writing this letter is because my wife was currently driving a Nissan Rogue 2016 SV until we purchased a new car this year. I cannot recall exactly when I started to hear the noise or feel my driver seat on my Nissan Rogue rocking back when accelerating and rocking forward when pressing the brakes normally. I verify my VIN number to see if there a was a recall for my vehicle because I thought Nissan sent an email pertaining to certain Rogues were having seat issues. I took my Nissan Rogue to Bill Seidle’s Nissan in Miami to get my regular maintenance and I ask them to check my driver’s seat. My Rogue had 85,056 when I took it to the dealer on 10/9/2023. The dealer stated the driver seat had excessive play because of the railings. This repair will cost $1,747.57 parts and labor. The price of the seat frame ranges from $1,200.00 to $1,400.00. I do not know what the threshold for a vehicle is to be place under recall list, however I do think, an investigation should start with the 2016 Nissan Rogue. There are blogs regarding the driver’s seat of the Nissan Rogue with the same problem that I have. I did reach out to Nissan customer support however I lost my case number. My concern is what happens if I get rear ended. How much does my weight affects the frame or the railing. Is the railing weak from the manufacturer and as a consumer I have to $1,700.00. The contact owns a 2016 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 35 MPH, the vehicle shut off independently. The vehicle was immediately restarted and operated normally. The contact stated that the failure had occurred on another occasion. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The manufacturer and local dealer were not contacted. The failure mileage was 30,000.
Driving home on the highway my car begin to rev high, but lose speed, then again when I went to pass in the passing lane, I pulled over for about 5mins, then proceeded to drive, about 2 mins in it started doing it again, but this time it made noises, and was vibrating/shuddering as if something was in the gears, I pulled over and got roadside assistance which in-turn led to the towing of my car to a safe location. once off the flatbed, I went to park my car, it did all the noises and revving once again, but as I placed it in park there was fast clicking sound and the car rolled back (while in park), I then applied the brakes harder then released again, and it began to roll again... once again I applied the brakes, as well as the parking brake and it remained stationary.
rear view mirror detached
My car key fob is in perfect working conditions with no defect. I was told by a person my key fob, would ve deactivated if it wasn't repaired. My fob work just fine, and my bigger concern is that my alarm with locking my car is associated with my fob. My safety of car jacking and theft is larger if my fob is deactivated. I dont have a broken fob. So if my car can't lock and it gets stolen, I will sue Nissan, and and will go after those who can't just change or replace the gobs with some thing updated.
A transmission issue with my vehicle first occurred on the highway. I purchased the vehicle in 2021 from Carvana who stated all open recalls had been taken care of. When I took the car into the dealership for the transmission issue, Nissan said the recall expired a couple months ago and would not honor the expired class action lawsuit. I'm trying to see what my options are for getting this repair done.
The contact owns a 2016 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated that the front driver's side seat belt locking mechanism had malfunctioned and was sometimes difficult to lock and unlock. The contact stated that the locking mechanism had become stuck and would not immediately unlock and release on multiple occasions. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The local dealer and manufacturer were not yet notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 140,000.
In September 2023, my 2016 Nissan started vibrating with noise. It was not shortly after that a warning appeared on the console. The warning, "Chassis Control System Error" caused research as the vehicle worsened. As I was driving, a warning of the brakes shutting down appeared. I returned home in time, and parked the vehicle. The truck was then sent to the mechanic where I was told that the transmission failed. The CVT failed at 83,000 miles. The vehicle is currently at a Nissan dealership service department, while I'm in the process of litigation with Nissan North America, Inc. Nissan offered just $1500.00 towards an estimated $6000 CVT repair bill. This problem is an extension of the 2022 Class Action Lawsuit that needs to be re-established. Nissan manufactured the vehicles with the knowledge of the defective CVT and did not make the consumers aware of the defect. Nissan dealerships also needs to be held accountable for their knowledge of the fraudulent act of Nissan to the consumers. Dealerships sold the vehicles also with the knowledge of the defective CVT. Nissan manipulated the law with a bogus extended warranty that protects Nissan from having to correct the wrong.
While driving on a major highway, my newly licensed 16-year-old son experienced shuddering, jerking (slight at first, but progressively worse) and failure to take off from a traffic light. He turned on the emergency flashing lights to alert other drivers, and he was able to take off about 5 seconds later, but the RPMs raced sporadically and acceleration stopped working. He drifted into a left turn lane and prayed he would make it across two lanes of active traffic without stopping. My independent service center and our closest dealer confirmed diagnosis (transmission replacement needed) and I had to have it towed to the dealer through my insurance company. NO WARNING LAMPS OR MESSAGES APPEARED PRIOR TO THIS INCIDENT. Nissan was unwilling to provide any financial assistance or goodwill toward the necessary transmission replacement, although this is a known defect in CVT transmissions. Their only action has been service bulletins and a settlement for an extra 24,000 miles beyond the original 60,000. I am fortunate my son was not a casualty of this poor craftsmanship, but I guess since no one has died yet, Nissan doesn't have to do the right thing and recall these faulty transmissions. Poor customer service and poor vehicles. This is my fourth Nissan, and two of them have had transmission issues. I will NEVER buy another. My family is too valuable to risk in one of these experiments.
The warnings shown in the attached picture came on for no reason all at once then after a restart of the engine, they all disappeared except the check engine light. OBDII code reader shows the code P2004, but after clearing the code with the OBDII tool, the check engine light doesn't come back, which should mean the problem P2004 does not exist anymore. The same story has happened several times in the past year.
AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY IN A VIOLENT CAR ACCIDENT. OTHER VEHICLE'S AIRBAGS DID DEPLOY. I HIT MY HEAD ON THE SIDE WINDOW OR DOOR VERY HARD, AND THE HEAD INJURY WAS FELT INSTANTLY AND ONSITE, I HAD TO GO TO THE ER AND GET A CT SCAN AND HAD A CONCUSSION. A COLLISION COMPANY IS INVESTIGATING THE DAMAGE AND AIRBAGS. AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST IF YOU WANT TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE. THERE WERE AIRBAG LIGHTS THAT CAME ON FOR THE PASSENGER SEAT FROM TIME TO TIME.
When I am driving my 2016 Nissan Rogue the automobile itself with no others in the vehicle starts unlocking and locking the doors automatically.
While driving home from work, the vehicle's transmission stopped working, resulting in coasting out of traffic and requiring a tow home at night. My safety and the safety of others were at risk. The next morning, the vehicle was towed to the mechanic shop, which confirmed the transmission failed and needs a complete replacement. There was not any warning lights or clear symptoms. In hindsight, there were some slight performance warnings that began about 2 miles prior to failure. The vehicle had a slight hesitation (like driving a car that wasn't warmed up prior to the 1990s or using cheap gas) but it was so slight and not alarming or cause for concern. The following day I was scheduled to drive to San Fransisco, had the failure occurred on I-80, it would have been a dangerous situation. Another safety issue is the radio screen that doesn't work when the outside temperature is hot, it flashes so bright, and it is so distracting that I put a postcard in front of it to dim the strobe effect. The dealership said I need to replace the computer but it was safe to drive. This vehicle has been well maintained and has approx 121k miles. The link to the repair estimate from the mechanic stopped working after I declined the $9000 cost. So I cannot provide that. The vehicle was towed back to my home, and it is parked in my driveway until I figure out what to do.
During highway driving speeds vehicle will suddenly lose power and slow down. Pressing accelerator pedal increases RPM but not the speed. With cruise control engaged vehicle will suddenly and abruptly slow down with RPMs climbing to 4000. I fear that I will be hit from behind because of suddenly slowing down. Also unable to pass vehicles due to loss of power.
On August 12 2023 on a trip to hershey PA my rogue felt like she was barely stuttering. I was passenger at the time, asked the driver if they felt that and if it was the car or the road because it felt almost like vibrations on uneven road. Then the rpm's dropped at highway speed like it needed to downshift, paused just above 2k and popped back up. Minutes later the transmission light came on. It continued to happen on and off on the way home and to the airport the following day. I parked her for a week until could get her to the garage (she moved less than 20 miles in that week). Taking her to winchester, the stutter became more "vibrant" and distinct happening no less than 12 times in 35 miles. I've never had issues previous to Aug 12. The shop said transmission failure. When I brought up the history of cvt issues and asked for additional warranty on the repair (beyond the 12 mos they quoted) . Obviously this is a known issue, the dealer makinge feel as if they are trying to ignore it is frustrating.
The contact owns a 2016 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle lost automotive power and decelerated and failed to properly accelerate. During the failure, the cruise control unexpectedly deactivated. After turning off and restarting the vehicle, the failure was self-corrected. Additionally, the contact stated that while standing near the vehicle, the rear hatch door erroneously unlocked without pressing the key fob button. While operating the vehicle, the message "Key not Detected" was displayed. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The manufacturer and local dealer were not yet contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 75,000.
Air conditioner and fan shuts off when driving long distance (50 - 100 miles) then comes back on intermittent.
The contact owns a 2016 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle stalled and lost motive power. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed with rear differential failure, all-wheel drive failure, and clutch unit failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The contact stated that she was informed by the warranty company that the part needed to complete the repair was not covered under her warranty. The failure mileage was approximately 76,000.
Problem with transmission- sluggish when accelerating Very unsafe to drive I obtained diagnostic test from Simba Automotive- code: p1564-p0841-p17f0 At first there was no warning but after a few more drives warning engine light appeared on dashboard. Recommendation is to replace the transmission- cost around 7500 USD
