HI I HAVE A 2005 NISSAN XTERRA. THESE VEHICLES ARE HAVING MAJOR PROBLEMS WITH THE FUEL SENDING UNIT, LOCATED IN THE GAS TANK ON THE FUEL PUMP. THE SYMPTOMS ARE THAT ONE DAY OUT OF THE BLUE, WITH LOW MILES ON THE VEHICLE, THE GAS GAUGE STOPS WORKING OR BECOMES INACCURATE. ON THE ODB II, IT SHOWS AS PO463. NISSAN WILL NOT COVER AND THIS IS UNSAFE, AS YOU HAVE TO "GUESS" BY MILEAGE HOW MUCH FUEL IS LEFT. MINE WENT OUT AND I FIXED IT MYSELF AS I WAS CONCERNED WITH SAFETY OF RUNNING OUT OF FUEL AT A BAD TIME. *TR
NON-WORKING FUEL GAUGE PROBLEM AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON! *TR
2005 XTERRA 35000 MILES FILLED UP AT GAS STATION GAUGE WENT TO COMPLETELY EMPTY. THE DTE READ ------ . DID SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND THAT THIS IS AFFECTING ALL EXTERRA WHICH SEEMS TO INDICATE THIS IS A REAL PROBLEM WITH SEVERAL MODELS, INCLUDING XTERRA'S. NOW TRYING TO FIND OUT WHY THEY APPARENTLY WON'T COVER IT. THIS NEEDS TO BE A RECALL AS THIS IS AFFECTING ALL CUSTOMERS. *TR
MY FUEL SENSOR AND EVAP VALVE HAVE BOTH FAILED ON MY '05 NISSAN XTERRA. I USE IT OFF-ROAD, WHICH IS SUPPOSEDLY WHY THE EVAP VALVE FAILED. SO MANY PEOPLE ARE HAVING THESE PROBLEMS THAT THEY ARE CLEARLY A MANUFACTURING DEFECT. NISSAN SHOULD BE ASHAMED NOT TO STAND BY THE QUALITY OF THEIR PRODUCT; THEY SHOULD BE REPLACING IT FOR FREE. *TR

INACCURATE FUEL GAUGE LEADING TO INACCURATE FUEL READINGS; THE GAUGE MAY SHOW GAS LEFT WHEN TANK IS ACTUALLY EMPTY OR VICE VERSA; ALL DIGITAL DASH READINGS AND COMPONENTS SHORT OUT OR COMPLETELY STOP WORKING INCLUDING MILEAGE READINGS; HAVE TO CONTINUALLY FILL UP WITH GAS TO ENSURE I HAVE ENOUGH TO RUN THE VEHICLE; I HAVE RUN OUT OF GAS WHILE TRAVELING AT 80 MILES PER HOUR ON THE HIGHWAY SEVERAL TIMES, THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD; I HAVE TWO SMALL CHILDREN TRAVELING WITH ME AND DO NOT NEED TO RUN OUT OF GAS ON THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 NISSAN XTERRA. THE CONTACT STATED AFTER REFILLING THE VEHICLE WITH GASOLINE FUEL, THE FUEL LEVEL GAUGE INDICATED THAT THE FUEL TANK WAS EMPTY. THE DEALER ADVISED THAT THE FUEL SENSOR WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED AND THERE WERE NO PRIOR WARNINGS OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 40,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE IS 63,400 UPDATED 9/13/10 *CN THE CONSUMER STATED THE FUEL GAUGE IN THE INSTRUMENT PANEL STARTED MALFUNCTIONING AND SHOWING ERRONEOUS FUEL LEVELS. THE GAUGE WOULD THEN FLUCTUATE BETWEEN NORMAL LEVELS TO SHOWING EMPTY OR NEARLY EMPTY INACCURATELY. THE CONSUMER REFERENCED RECALL 10V075000. THE EXACT PROBLEM THAT HE WAS EXPERIENCING. HOWEVER, HIS MODEL YEAR WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. UPDATED 09/15/10
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 NISSAN XTERRA. AFTER REFUELING THE FUEL GAUGE DISPLAYED A READING OF EMPTY. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ALSO BEGAN TO ILLUMINATE ON THE DASHBOARD. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE FUEL SENDING UNIT WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE CONTINUED TO RECUR INTERMITTENTLY AFTER REFUELING. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 65,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 118,000.
I HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING ISSUES WITH MY FUEL GAUGE ON MY 2005 NISSAN XTERRA. I CAN NO LONGER PLACE TRUST IN THE GAUGE, SINCE I HAVE RUN OUT OF GAS TWICE NOW, WHILE THE GAUGE STILL SHOWED FUEL AVAILABLE IN THE TANK. THE ERROR CODES ON THE COMPUTER MODULE STATE IT IS THE FUEL SENDING UNIT. I HAVE SPOKEN WITH NISSAN AND THEY REFUSED TO RECTIFY THIS ISSUE. *TR
I HAVE A 2005 NISSAN XTERRA. EARLIER THIS WEEK I FUELED UP THE VEHICLE AND CONTINUED HOME. I REALIZED THAT MY FUEL GAUGE WAS READING ONLY 3/4 OF A TANK. SO, I WENT BACK UP TO THE GAS STATION AND TRIED TO FINISH FILLING THE TANK (ON .57 CENTS). EVERY DAY SINCE THEN, ONCE I START THE CAR THE FUEL GAUGE READS BAD. THIS PAST MONDAY THE SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT HAD COME ON. I THEN WENT OUT AND PURCHASED AN OBD II SCANNER TO READ THE ERROR CODE. IT WAS P0463 (FUEL LEVEL SENSOR A CIRCUIT HIGH INPUT). DID SOME RESEARCH ON THE SUBJECT AND FOUND THAT IT MEANS THAT I HAVE A FAULTY FUEL SENDING UNIT. IT SEEMS TO BE A VERY COMMON PROBLEM FOR 2005-2007 NISSAN XTERRA. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUES. IF MY WIFE IS DRIVING MY DAUGHTER BACK TO NYC AND THE CAR RUNS OUT OF FUEL AND THEY ARE STRANDED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NEW JERSEY TURNPIKE WITH PEOPLE DRIVING PAST THEM IN EXCESS OF 70-80 MPH.... THAT IS FAR FROM SAFE. *TR
I FILLED THE TANK IN OUR 05 XTERRA ONLY TO FIND THAT THE GAS GAUGE WAS NOT ACKNOWLEDGING THE FILL UP. A FEW MINUTES LATER THE GAUGE DROPPED TO EMPTY, AND THEN THE FUEL LIGHT AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. NOW, THE FUEL GAUGE DOES NOT WORK AT ALL AND THE REPAIR ESTIMATES ARE $675+. NISSAN WILL NOT ACKNOWLEDGE THIS AS A PROBLEM, YET MUCH INTERNET RESEARCH TELLS ME THAT THIS OCCURS ON MOST XTERRAS. THIS XTERRA IS THE PRIMARY VEHICLE FOR MY WIFE AND TWO CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 3, AND TWICE NOW THEY HAVE RUN OUT OF GAS BECAUSE OF THIS. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 NISSAN XTERRA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH ON NORMAL ROAD CONDITIONS, THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED UNEXPECTEDLY ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE WARNING INDICATOR REMAINED ILLUMINATED UNTIL THE ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING AND THEY CONCLUDED THAT THE FUEL SENDING UNIT FAILED. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 NISSAN XTERRA. WHILE TRAVELING AT APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE FUEL GAUGE DID NOT ACCURATELY DISPLAY THE AMOUNT OF FUEL IN THE FUEL TANK. THE CONTACT STATED THIS FAILURE IS SIMILAR TO THE FAILURE IN RECALL 10V074000 (COMPONENT: FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER: STORAGE: FUEL GAUGE SYSTEM). THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALERSHIP WHERE THE FUEL GAUGE SENDING UNIT WAS REPLACED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 59,000. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 49,000.

2005 XTERRA FUEL GAUGE FAILURE. GAUGE SHOWS EMPTY WHEN FULL AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON. DEALER WANTS $550 TO FIX. THIS IS A KNOWN DEFECT AND SAFETY ISSUE AND SHOULD BE SUBJECT OF RECALL. IF A WOMAN WAS ALONE LATE AT NIGHT AND THE GAS GAUGE SUDDENLY SHOWED EMPTY SHE WOULD BE FORCED TO STOP AT THE NEAREST STATION WHICH MAY NOT BE IN THE SAFEST AREA. I KNOW, BECAUSE I WORK NEAR AN AIRPORT IN A HIGH CRIME AREA. *TR

1. NORMAL USE OF VEHICLE. CITY DRIVING MOSTLY. 2. FUEL GAUGE NEEDLE DOES NOT CORRECTLY SHOW THE AMOUNT OF FUEL AFTER INITIALLY FILLING UP THE GAS TANK. AFTER SOME MINUTES OF DRIVING, THE NEEDLE CORRECTLY SHOWS A FULL TANK. THEN AFTER ABOUT 3/4 FUEL LEVEL, THE NEEDLE DROPS BACK TO EMPTY. ADDITIONALLY, THE DIGITAL GAUGE DOES NOT ACCURATELY COMPUTE FUEL MILES LEFT AND MPG. THIS BEHAVIOR REPEATS EACH TIME THE FUEL TANK IS FILLED. WITHOUT THESE FUNCTIONS I AM UNABLE TO DETERMINE HOW MUCH FUEL I HAVE LEFT IN THE TANK. LEAVING THE POSSIBILITY FOR BEING STRANDED SOMEWHERE, IF I DO NOT ACCURATELY GUESS AT HOW MUCH GAS IS LEFT. 3. NOTHING WAS DONE (YET) TO CORRECT THE FAILURE. A MECHANIC TOLD ME IT THE PROBLEM IS PROBABLY CAUSED BY A MALFUNCTION FUEL SENDING UNIT/SENSOR. I HAVE ALSO CONFIRMED THE DIAGNOSIS ON X.NISSANHELP.COM. I AM AWAITING TO DETERMINE IF THESE VEHICLES COULD BE RECALLED BY THE DEALERS AND/OR NISSAN, AS IT APPEARS MANY PEOPLE ARE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE. *TR
I HAVE A 2005 NISSAN XTERRA. THE VEHICLE IS WELL-MAINTAINED. RECENTLY, AFTER SERVICE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, AND REMAINED ON FOR SEVERAL WEEKS. I NOTICED THAT MY GAS GAUGE WASN'T RESPONDING WHEN I FILLED UP THE FUEL TANK. MY FUEL GAUGE WOULD READ 1/4 TANK AFTER FILLING UP, AND THE "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" LIGHT WOULD COME ON. *TR
WE EXPERIENCED A FAILED FUEL LEVEL SENSOR ON OUR 2005 NISSAN XTERRA. WE FILLED THE GAS TANK COMPLETELY AND THEN NOTICED THE FUEL GAUGE WOULD NOT RISE ABOVE 2/3. THEN THE 'SERVICE ENGINE SOON' WARNING LAMP CAME ON. AFTER RESEARCHING THE INCIDENT WE FOUND THERE ARE MANY SIMILAR INCIDENTS POSTED ON THE INTERNET. THIS IS A RECURRING PROBLEM WITH SEVERAL NISSAN VEHICLES MODELS AND SEEMS TO BE AN INEVITABLE INCIDENT WITH MOST OF THE MODELS. WE BELIEVE THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL ISSUE. THE REPLACEMENT OF THE DEFECTIVE PART WILL COST BETWEEN $300 - $400. *TR
FUEL GAUGE READS EMPTY WHEN GAS IS PRESENT. I DO NOT KNOW HOW MUCH FUEL IS LEFT. THERE IS A RECALL ON 2006 AN NEWER VEHICLES OF THE SAME TYPE. MANY PEOPLE I TALK TO WITH THE SAME MAKE AND YEAR VEHICLE AS MYSELF HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. THIS IS A DEFINITE SAFETY ISSUE FOR ME CONSIDERING THE EXTENSIVE MILEAGE I DRIVE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 NISSAN XTERRA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE RADIATOR FLUID LEAKED INTO THE TRANSMISSION, CAUSING THE TRANSMISSION TO SEIZE. IN ADDITION, THE COOLING SYSTEM FAILED. THE RADIATOR AND THE TRANSMISSION WERE REPAIRED BY A LOCAL MECHANIC BUT THE COOLING SYSTEM WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 82,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 131,000.
THE ANCHOR PINS FOR THE ASSIST CYLINDERS ON THE REAR HATCH ARE RUSTING BADLY. I'VE TOLD MY WIFE NOT TO OPEN THE HATCH UNTIL THE DEALER CAN GET IN NEW PARTS WE ORDERED. WE ASKED THE DEALER IS THIS HAS BEEN A PROBLEM AND THEY SAID NO. SINCE WE DID NOT BUY THE EXTENDED WARRANTY AND MILEAGE IS 86000 THIS WOULD NOT BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. I CONTACTED NISSAN USA AND GOT THE SAME ANSWER. THE REAR HATCH IS MADE FROM METAL AND IS HEAVY. IF ONE OF THESE RUSTY PINS FAILS THE HATCH WILL FALL ON SOMEONE'S HEAD. THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL TO CHECK THE PINS FOR RUSTING AND REPLACED IF THEY ARE RUSTED. THE NEW PARTS ARE REDESIGNED AND I WONDER WHY THE PART WAS REDESIGNED? 2005 WAS THE FIRST YEAR OF THIS BODY STYLE SO THERE MAY HAVE BEEN PROBLEMS IN SOME OF THE COMPONENTS USED ON THIS VEHICLE. THE NEW PARTS ARE ABOUT $60.00 AND I'LL PUT THEM ON. HOW MUCH WOULD IT COST NISSAN IF THIS HATCH FALLS ON MY WIFE? *TR

I UNDERSTAND THAT THIS WAS A KNOWN DEFECT ON PRE-2005 XTERRAS, AND IS INCREASINGLY EMERGING AS A DEFECT IN MORE RECENT MODELS. 1. SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT COMES ON WHEN GAS GETS BELOW 1/2 TANK. WHEN I FILL THE TANK THE GAUGE DOESN'T REGISTER THE FILL UNTIL VEHICLE IS RESTARTED. OR, THE GAUGE DROPS TO E AND THE LIGHT COMES ON. 2. OCCURS ALL THE TIME. 3.THE PART REQUIRED IS A FUEL LEVEL SENDING SENSOR UNIT. *TR
I FILLED UP MY GAS TANK AND WHEN I TURNED MY CAR ON, THE GAS GAUGE NEEDLE DID NOT MOVE TO REFLECT HOW MUCH GAS WAS IN MY TANK. THE GAS STATION ATTENDANT PUT ANOTHER DOLLAR WORTH OF GAS INTO MY CAR. UPON TURNING MY CAR BACK ON, THE GAS GAUGE NEEDLE STILL DID NOT MOVE AND MY "CHECK ENGINE SOON" LIGHT CAME ON. THE GAS CAP WAS SECURE. I CALLED THE DEALER AND TOOK MY CAR INTO THEIR SERVICE DEPARTMENT. THE MECHANIC TOLD ME THEY COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG WITH MY CAR AND RESET THE LIGHT. THE SAME PROBLEM OCCURRED THE NEXT TIME I FILLED MY GAS TANK. FURTHERMORE, ABOUT A MONTH AFTER THE "CHECK ENGINE SOON" LIGHT CAME BACK ON THE GAS GAUGE WILL NOW DROP BELOW EMPTY AND MY GAS LIGHT WILL GO ON WHEN I HAVE ABOUT A HALF OF A TANK OR A QUARTER OF A TANK OF GAS LEFT. THE "CHECK ENGINE SOON" LIGHT REMAINS ON. *TR
SAME FUEL GAUGE PROBLEMS OTHER OWNERS ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT AND THE LACK OF SUPPORT FROM NISSAN. OURS WOULD READ EMPTY AND LOW FUEL LIGHT COMES ON BELOW 1/2 TANK OF GAS. TOOK IT TO A NISSAN DEALER AND $741.00 LATER THE FUEL SENDER/FUEL PUMP WAS REPLACED. THIS IS MY WIFE'S VEHICLE AND I WOULD HATE THE THOUGHT OF HER BEING STRANDED THINKING SHE HAD PLENTY OF FUEL AND IT RUNS OUT OF GAS. I GUESS NISSAN DOES NOT THINK OF THIS. THERE SHOULD DEFINITELY BE A RECALL ON THESE FUEL SENDERS AND ISSUE SOME KIND OF CREDIT OR CHECK FOR THE OWNERS WHO HAVE ALREADY HAD THE VEHICLE REPAIRED AT THEIR EXPENSE. *TR
SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON WENT TO HAVE IT TAKEN CARE OF AND GET AN EARLY STATE INSPECTION STICKER. FAILED INSPECTION DUE TO THE EVAPORATION VENT CONTROL. SEARCHED ONLINE AND FOUND THAT I WAS NOT ALONE. NISSAN HAS BEEN HAVING THIS PROBLEM SINCE 2003 ON X-TERRA, PATHFINDERS AND FRONTIERS. NISSAN KNOWS THERE IS A PROBLEM AND HAS KNOWN FOR A LONG TIME BUT WON'T FIX IT. 2008 MODELS ARE ALSO STARTING TO HAVE PROBLEMS. THE FUEL LEVEL SENSOR ALSO WENT OUT WITH IT AS WELL. *TR
THIS VEHICLE HAS A FAULTY FUEL GAUGE, GAS TANK, FUEL PUMP...WHATEVER! THIS IS THE 3RD GAS TANK AND FUEL PUMP FOR A 2005 MODEL! THE FIRST TIME, AFTER A FEW MONTHS OF OWNERSHIP, WAS COVERED BY WARRANTY. NOW AFTER LESS THAN 3 YRS OWNERSHIP, WE HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM AND WE HAVE TO PAY ALMOST 600.00! OUT OF WARRANTY. THIS IS EXTREME MAINTENANCE FOR THE SAME PROBLEMS/PARTS ON A 3 YR OLD VEHICLE! NISSAN SHOULD PAY FOR THESE PARTS. *TR
TODAY, I PUT A FULL TANK OF GAS IN MY CAR BUT MY GAS GAUGE SHOWED THAT IT WAS 1/4 FULL. I HAD AN ARGUMENT WITH THE GAS STATION CLERK THAT THEY RIPPED ME OFF. SINCE IT WAS LATE AT NIGHT I WASN'T ABLE TO SPEAK TO THE MANAGERS OF THAT STATION. I DECIDED TO DRIVE TO ANOTHER GAS STATION TO SEE IF I COULD FILL IT UP, BUT ALL OF SUDDEN, THE SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT TURNS ON AND NOW THE GAUGE WAS COMPLETELY DOWN WITH THE LIGHT ON. THE ONLY WAY FOR ME TO KNOW THAT MY TANK IS FULL IS TO TRY TO FILL IT UP AGAIN. BUT, BECAUSE IT WAS FULL, THE TANK WAS NOT ALLOWING ANYMORE GAS. I DECIDED TO DO A BRIEF RESEARCH TO FIND THAT MANY OTHERS HAS THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY CAR. IT'S A 2005 NISSAN XTERRA WITH 50,000 MILES. MOST OF THE PEOPLE ONLINE INDICATED THAT THEY ALSO HAVE THE SIMILAR PROBLEM AT THE SIMILAR MILEAGE COSTING THEM OVER 500 DOLLARS IN REPAIR. NOW THAT THE GAUGE IS DISABLED, I WOULDN'T KNOW WHEN MY TANK WILL BE EMPTIED. I COULD BE STUCK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FREEWAY OR SOMEWHERE IN THE WILDERNESS WITHOUT ANY GAS. PEOPLE ONLINE WERE SAYING ITS PART OF THE SENSOR IN THE CAR WHICH WAS MADE FAULTY FOR MANY OF THE NISSAN TRUCKS AND SUV'S. I STRONGLY BELIEVE THAT THIS IS A BAD MOVE BY NISSAN AND I WILL DEFINITELY WANT THEM TO HAVE A RECALL. IT IS UNFAIR FOR CONSUMERS TO BE PAYING EXTRA 400-600 DOLLARS TO REPLACE A FAULTY ITEM. *TR

I HAD SERVICED THE VEHICLE AT A NISSAN DEALERSHIP FOR AN OIL CHANGE, HOWEVER, WHEN THE SERVICE HAD BEEN COMPLETED, THE CD-PLAYER DID NOT FUNCTION CORRECTLY AND I HAD LET THE DEALERSHIP KNOWN OF THE ISSUE. I BOUGHT A BRAND NEW 2005 NISSAN XTERRA IN JANUARY OF 2006. AT APPROXIMATELY 48,000 MILES THE FUEL SENDING UNIT WENT BAD. AFTER FILLING UP WITH GAS, THE GAUGE DID NOT MOVE FROM ALMOST EMPTY AND THE ENGINE SERVICE LIGHT CAME ON. AFTER DRIVING AROUND 60 MILES, THE GAUGE BEGAN TO MOVE, BUT EVENTUALLY STALLED ON A HALF TANK OF GAS. AFTER A FEW WEEKS THE GAS GAUGE STARTED WORKING AGAIN, BUT NOW ABOUT 14 MONTHS LATER, THE SAME THING IS HAPPENING CONSTANTLY. I HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH GAS I HAVE IN THE TANK. I WAS TOLD IT WOULD COST OVER $500 TO REPAIR. AFTER RESEARCHING, I FOUND THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH NISSAN VEHICLES. THERE NEEDS TO BE A RECALL BEFORE AN ACCIDENT HAPPENS. *TR
