2000 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX GTP SUPER CHARGED V6 ENGINE 2-DOOR WITH APPROXIMATELY 43,000 MILES AND WELL MAINTAINED -- FIRE IN ENGINE COMPARTMENT DESTROYED MOST OF ENGINE COMPARTMENT. CAR WAS PARKED IN PARKING LOT FOR ABOUT AN HOUR BEFORE FIRE STARTED. POLICE CALLED FIRE DEPT TO PUT OUT FIRE. NO PRIOR INDICATION OF ANY PROBLEM. *JB
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE SUBSTANCE IN THE ELECTROCROMATIC REAR VIEW MIRROR HAD BROKEN DOWN WHICH CAUSED A DUPLICATE VIEW OF THE OBJECT BEING VIEWED. THE IMAGE IN THE MIRROR IS DISTORTED, AND IS WORSE WHEN DRIVEN AT NIGHT. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED ON 07/17/06 AND DETERMINED THAT THE VEHICLE NEEDED TO BROUGHT TO A SERVICE DEALERSHIP. THE SERVICE DEALER WAS CONTACTED ON 07/17/06 AND DETERMINED THAT THE VEHICLE NEEDED TO INSPECTED BY A SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE AT A DEALERSHIP. ON 07/19/06, THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY THE DEALERSHIP AND DETERMINED THAT THE PROBLEM COULD NOT FIXED, BUT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED WITH A NEW REAR VIEW MIRROR. MIRROR WAS ORDERED ON 07/21/06 AND WILL BE REPAIRED BY THE OWNER.
WINDSHIELD WIPERS WILL NOT DISBURSE FLUID TO THE WINDSHIELD. IF I NEED TO CLEAN THE WINDSHIELD, I HAVE TO ROLL WINDOW DOWN, SPRAY FLUID ONTO WINDSHIELD,R OLL WINDOW BACK UP AND ALL WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE. *JB
ELECTRICAL FIRE IN ENGINE COMPARTMENT DUE TO UNKNOWN REASONING. TOTAL LOSS ON CAR. MY WIFE DROVE 20 MINUTES, PARKED AND WENT TO A STORE. FIVE MINUTES LATER, OUR BABYSITTER CAME IN WITH OUR CHILD AND TOLD MY WIFE THAT THE VEHICLE WAS ON FIRE.
TRAC LIGHT COMES ON, TAC GOES TO 0, CAR STALLS. THIS COULD EASILY RESULT IN US BEING REAR ENDED. THE CAR IS MOVING ALONG AND JUST STOPS. REPLACED COMPUTER AND IGNITION MODULE PROBLEM STILL PERSIST. GARAGE AND DEALER IS UNSURE OF THE PROBLEM. AT THIS POINT IT IS PROCESS OF ELIMINATION COSTING US A LOT OF MONEY. *NM
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE ACCELERATING, THE ENGINE STALLED. THIS OCCURRED 9 OR 10 TIMES IN THE PAST MONTH. TWO DEALERS HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM. THE FIRST DEALER REPLACED THE CRANKSHAFT CENSOR, HOWEVER THE PROBLEM RECURRED. A SECOND DEALER WAS ALSO UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. THE CONTACT EXPRESSED CONCERNED ABOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF A FUTURE ACCIDENT DUE TO THIS PROBLEM.
OWN A 2000 AND 2002 MODEL PONTIAC GRAND PRIX GT. BOTH VEHICLES ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM OF KEY WILL NOT COME OUT OF IGNITION DUE TO SAFETY INTERLOCK WILL NOT ACTIVATE IN PARK TO ALLOW KEY TO BE ROTATED TO THE FULLY OFF POSITION. I AM AWARE THIS IS NOT A SAFETY CONCERN BUT I BELIEVE SINCE I RESEARCHED THE INTERNET THAT MANY OF THE PONTIAC GRAND PRIX ARE EXPERIENCING THIS PROBLEM AND THIS WOULD BE A COMMON DEFECT IN THE DESIGN. *JB
I JUST PURCHASED MY 2000 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX THIS PAST JANUARY AND AS I HAPPENED TO BE DRIVING IT HOME FROM A NAVY EVENT IN FRONT OF MY HUSBAND (THANK GOODNESS). HE PULLED UP ALONG SIDE OF ME ON HIS MOTORCYCLE AND LET ME KNOW THAT I HAD NO BRAKE LIGHTS. CRUISE CONTROL ALSO STOPPED WORKING BEFORE THIS, BUT I AM ASSUMING THIS ALL HAPPENED AT THE SAME TIME. HE IS AN ELECTRONICS TECHNICIAN AND HAS SPENT HOURS TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THE HECK IS WRONG. TOMORROW I AM GOING TO GO AHEAD AND CALL THE DEALERSHIP AND HAVE THEM LOOK AT IT. I ALSO HAVE SURGING WITH LIGHT ACCELERATION OR AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS WITH NO DIAGNOSTICS TROUBLE CODES. BOTH OF THESE STARTED AT THE SAME TIME, BUT HE KNOWS THEY ARE UNRELATED. *NM
HAZARD FLASHER SWITCH BURNT OUT AND CAUSED BRAKE LIGHT AND HORN TO BECOME INOPERATIVE. NONE OF THIS WAS DISCOVERED UNTIL THE TIME CAME FOR STATE INSPECTION. WE BELIEVE THE CAR WAS DRIVEN FOR SEVERAL MONTHS IN THIS CONDITION. *JB THE SWITCH WAS REPLACED. THE OLD SWITCH IS STILL AVAILABLE. DATE ENTERED BELOW IS DATE PROBLEM WAS DISCOVERED. WE BELIEVE THE PROBLEM OCCURRED SEVERAL MONTHS EARLIER WHEN A PASSENGER NOTICED A PUFF OF SMOKE IN THE CAR.
THE CAR CAUGHT FIRE UNDER THE HOOD IN FRONT OF THE FIRE WALL ON THE MANIFOLD THE SECOND TIME. FIRST TIME IT CAUGHT ON FIRE ON THE FRONT OF THE MOTOR BEHIND THE RADIATOR. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED, THE CONTACT NOTICED SMOKE COMING FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. HE ALSO NOTICED A LEAK COMING FROM THE VALVE COVER GASKETS. HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND HAD THE VALVE COVERS REPLACED. A YEAR AFTER THE REPAIRS WERE MADE, HE BEGAN TO NOTICE SPOTS AND LEAKS ON THE FLOOR AGAIN, AS WELL AS SMOKE FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. HE TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER AND THEY REPLACED THE LOWER INTAKE GASKETS AND THE SUPER CHARGER GASKETS AT 65,000 MILES. THE CONTACT CALLED GMC TO EXPLAIN HOW HE FELT THAT THE OTHER GASKETS SHOULD HAVE ALSO BEEN REPLACED AND INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. HE FEELS THAT GMC DID NOT ADDRESS HIS ISSUES PROPERLY. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 58,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 72,000. UPDATED 07/10/08. *LJ UPDATED *JB
DRIVING HOME AROUND 5 30 IN THE EVENING, EXITED OFF THE GARDEN STATE PARKWAY AT EXIT 91. CAME UP TO THE FIRST LIGHT AND THE SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT CAME ON AND FLASHED A COUPLE OF TIMES. AFTER THAT THERE WAS A PUFF OF WHITE SMOKE THAT CAME FROM THE HOOD. THEN THE LIGHT WENT OUT. AT THIS POINT I WAS ABOUT A 1/2 MILE FROM HOME. AS I CONTINUED TO DRIVE THE CAR BEGAN TO HESITATE. TURNING ONTO THE STREET I LIVE OFF THE CAR DIED, NO STEERING, NO BRAKES, NOTHING. I HAD TO FORCIBLY TURN THE STEERING WHEEL, AVOIDING ON COMING TRAFFIC AND LUCKILY WITHOUT INCIDENT STEERED THE CAR INTO A VACANT RITE AID. WHERE I PULLED THE KEYS OUT OF THE IGNITION AND EXITED THE CAR. POPPED THE HOOD AND SAW A FLAME SPARK AROUND THE PLASTIC SUPERCHARGER COVER. AFTER SEEING THE FLAMES I RAN AS FAR AS POSSIBLE AND CALLED 911. POLICE AND FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVED SHORTLY AFTER. THE CAR'S ENGINE WAS COMPLETELY ENGULFED IN FLAMES. I AM LUCKY THAT I WAS NOT INJURED, IMAGINE IF I WAS TRAVELING ON THE PARKWAY AND THE CAR DIED OUT. I MIGHT NOT BE TYPING THIS LETTER RIGHT NOW! SOMETHING FOR GM TO THINK ABOUT. DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHEN TURNING AT SPEEDS BELOW 15 MPH, THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD STICK. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP. THE REPAIR SHOP IS FLUSHING THE STEERING SYSTEM AND ADDING A CONDITIONER. THIS IS AN ATTEMPT TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM BEFORE CHANGING THE RACK AND PINION.
WHILE DRIVING MY 2000 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX GTP, THE SES LAMP SUDDENLY BEGAN FLASHING. I PULLED OVER AND THE ENGINE BURST INTO FLAMES. THE CAR HAD BEEN RUNNING FINE BEFOREHAND. THE CAR WAS TOTALLED. *JB
I ARRIVED HOME FROM WORK AT 3:30 P.M. I WENT BACK OUT TO MY CAR ABOUT 10 MINUTES LATER TO RUN SOME ERRANDS AND MY CAR WAS ON FIRE. EVERYTHING IS ROASTED FROM THE FRONT WINDSHIELD FORWARD THROUGH THE ENGINE. I HAD TO CALL THE LOCAL FIRE DEPARTMENT AND THEY PUT OUT THE FIRE FOR ME AND TOOK ALL MY INFORMATION. I KNOW THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED TO 2000 GRAND PRIX GTP'S. I HAVE DONE SOME RESEARCH AND HAVE NOTICED A GREAT NUMBER OF INCIDENTS THAT HAVE THE SAME CONDITIONS AS MINE. AND SOMETHING SHOULD BE DONE ABOUT THIS, BECAUSE OBVIOUSLY THERE IS A MANUFACTURER DEFAULT OUT THERE AND GM SHOULD HAVE AN ANSWER FOR THIS ISSUE. *JB
BLOWER MOTOR FAILED. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE, FOR THOSE OF US WHO LIVE IN COLD CLIMATES AND DRIVE THROUGH SNOW AND RISK THE POSSIBILITY OF NOT BEING ABLE TO REMOVE FROZEN RAIN AND SNOW FROM THE WINDSHIELD WHILE DRIVING. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THERE ARE MANY GRAND PRIES THAT HAVE HAD THEIR BLOWERS FAIL. THIS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED A SAFETY ISSUE AND TAKEN SERIOUSLY, AND SOMETHING SHOULD BE DONE SO THAT AN ALREADY DANGEROUS DRIVING SITUATION (IEEE DRIVING IN SNOW) IS NOT MADE WORSE WHEN SOMEONE ELSE SUDDENLY FINDS THAT THEIR BLOWER IS NO LONGER WORKING.*AK
MY 2000 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX HAS A FUEL PUMP RESISTOR PROBLEM WHICH IS QUIET COMMON BECAUSE OF IT'S LOCATION. MY CAR BROKE DOWN 4 TIMES AND WAS TOWED 3 TIMES THROUGH AAA AND 1 TIME OUT OF POCKET $300 FROM OUTSIDE SYRACUSE TO WATERTOWN, NY. PLUS OUT OF POCKET EXPENSES FOR REPAIRS APPROX. $425. *NM
DT: COSCO TOURIVA MODEL # 22-130 WAL. THE CONTACT STATED THE LEFT SIDE OF THE BAR ON THE CHILD SEAT CAME OFF. THE HARNESS BAR ASSEMBLY CAME APART. THE MANUFACTURER TOLD THE CONTACT THAT THEY KNEW WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS, AND THEY WOULD SEND HER THE REPLACEMENT PART. ALSO, THEY SAID IT WAS SAFE TO USE IT. *AK
SINCE THE PURCHASE OF THIS CAR, EVERY TIME THAT IT RAINS WE HAVE A HUGE 2-3" PUDDLE OF WATER ON THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT FLOOR BOARD. THERE ARE NUMEROUS FORUMS ONLINE WITH HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE WITH THE SAME CAR AND THE SAME PROBLEM, GM CAN NOT CONTINUE TO IGNORE THIS. *JB
MY 2000 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX HAS HAD TWO FAILURES OF THE PRESSURE CONTROL SOLENOID AND THE CORRESPONDING VALVE BODY, CAUSING MY CAR TO UNEXPECTEDLY SURGE WHEN ACCELERATING. THE DEALERSHIP KEPT BOTH OLD PARTS, BUT THIS SEEMS TO BE HAPPENING TO MANY PEOPLE SO IT SHOULDN'T BE HARD TO FIND ONE. BOTH REPAIRS WERE COVERED UNDER WARRANTIES. THE FIRST ONE WAS REPLACED AT 32,000 MILES, AND THE SECOND AT 73,000 MILES. I HOPE NO ONE HAS AN ACCIDENT WHEN THIS HAPPENS, I KNOW I ALMOST DID, THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED I WAS SO SURPRISED I NEARLY RAN INTO ANOTHER CAR.*JB
DT: THE CONSUMERS VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN THE GARAGE AT 1:30 AM IN THE MORNING ON SEPTEMBER 6, 2005. THE ALARM WENT OFF. THE MANAGER OF THE CONSUMERS APARTMENT BUILDING INFORMED HER THAT THE VEHICLE WAS SMOKING, THE ALARM WAS GOING OFF, THE LIGHTS WHERE FLASHING AND THE VEHICLE WAS SMOKING. THE VEHICLE WAS FILLED WITH SMOKE. THE HOOD AND THE TRUNK WAS POPPED OPEN. THE CONSUMER VIEWED SPARKS COMING FROM THE TRUNK. THE CONSUMER TRIED TO START THE VEHICLE AND IT WOULDN'T START. THE INDIVIDUALS ON THE SCENE UNHOOKED THE BATTERY. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHO DETERMINED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS COMING FROM THE WIRING HARNESS. TL*- THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX GTP WITH AN ODOMETER READING OF 112365 MILES. IN SEPTEMBER 2005 THE VEHICLE CAUGHT ON FIRE STOPPING FOR 10 - 15 MINUTES. THE POLICE AND FIRE DEPARTMENTS WERE INVOLVED. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT CONFIRMED THAT THIS WAS A FUEL RELATED FIRE. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN PARKED SINCE ,AND NO REPAIRS HAS BEEN PERFORMED ON IT SINCE THERE WAS NO INSURANCE. THE CONTACT FILED COMPLAINT ABOUT THE VEHICLE AS A SAFETY PROBLEM WITH GM. *AK
DT: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE TRAVELING ON A HIGHWAY AT 65 MPH THE VEHICLE HYDROPLANED ON A WET ROAD, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO SPIN AROUND SEVERAL TIMES, AND TAKING OUT PART OF A FENCE ON A SIDE ROAD. THE VEHICLE THEN CAME TO REST UPON A TREE. THIS WAS A FRONTAL IMPACT; UPON IMPACT, THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE PASSENGER'S SIDE DOOR WAS DAMAGED. THE SEAT BELTS WERE WORN BY ALL THE PASSENGERS, BUT THEY DID NOT RESTRAIN THEM. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED INJURIES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED. THEY SENT AN INVESTIGATOR TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE. *AK
CONTACTED GM TO TELL THEM I HAVE INFORMATION REGARDING ENGINE COMPARTMENT FIRES IN W BODY CARS 1997-2004. THEY DON'T SEEM TO BE INTERESTED.
LOSS OF THE LOWER BRAKE LAMPS-VEHICLE HAS ABOUT 58000 MILES-HAZARD /TURN SIGNAL SWITCH HAS FAILED-WORK THE HAZARD SWITCH AND THE BRAKE LAMPS START WORKING-BUT SOON QUITS WORKING AGAIN
THE VEHICLE HAS HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE TRANSMISSION SLIPPING OFF AND ON FOR ABOUT A YEAR. AAMCO COULDN'T DETECT A PROBLEM WITHOUT A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. THE LIGHT CAME ON IN FEBRUARY 2005. THE VEHICLE NEEDED A SENSOR REPLACED AND THERE WAS A ERROR ON THE TRANSMISSION ALSO. A COMPLETE FLUID REPLACEMENT WAS DONE AND A CONDITIONER ADDED HOPING THAT THIS WOULD CURE THE PROBLEM. ON JUNE 1 THE LIGHT CAME ON AND THE SLIPPING OCCURRED AGAIN. IT LOST MERGING POWER ON THE BALTIMORE BELTWAY AND I BROUGHT IT INTO AAMCO FOR AN ANALYSIS. THEY CONCLUDED THAT THE TORQUE CONVERTER IS STUCK AS WELL AS SOME ADDITIONAL ITEM. THE CAR IS A 2000 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX WITH 83,000 MILES ON IT. I BELIEVE THAT THE POWER TRAIN WARRANTY ONLY COVERS THE VEHICLE FOR 80,000 MILES. SINCE THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING PROBLEM PRIOR TO THE 80,000, I WOULD LIKE TO THINK THAT GM WOULD ASSUME SOME LIABILITY FOR THE REPAIR ($1900.00). FROM SOME OF THE COMPLAINTS ON YOUR WEBSITE, I BELIEVE THAT THE TRANSMISSION IN THIS VEHICLE MAY BE DEFECTIVE IN SOME WAY.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX. THE CONTACT STATED WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH WHEN THE VEHICLE BEGAN JERKING ABNORMALLY AS THE VEHICLE ATTEMPTED TO SHIFT GEARS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER BUT WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 90,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 150,000.
CAR WOULD NOT TURN OVER. HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED TO A MECHANIC SHOP IN LANGHORNE PA. THE MECHANIC REPLACED THE ENTIRE FUEL PUMP FOR 800$.
DT: THE CONSUMER STATES SHE WAS IN HER VEHICLE DRIVING ON AN INCLINE, WHEN SHE SMELLED SOMETHING HOT ONCE THE VEHICLE WAS TURNED OFF. SMOKE WAS COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONSUMER RAISED THE HOOD. SHE STATED THAT THERE WAS A FIRE UNDERNEATH THE HOOD BEHIND THE ENGINE WHILE AWAITING FOR RESPONSE FROM A LOCAL DEALERSHIP. SHE ALSO IS WAITING FOR SOMEONE FROM PONTIAC/GM TO GET BACK WITH HER WITHIN 48 HOURS. *NM *SC *JB
DT: THE CONTACT STATES THAT HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO DEALER AND THE BRAKES PADS WERE FALLING APART. THE DEALER STATED ON HIS REPAIR INVOICE THAT FRONT BRAKE PADS WERE COMING OFF. THE DEALER SAID THAT THE VEHICLE NEEDED ALL NEW ROTORS BECAUSE THEY ALL WERE RUSTED.*AK *JB
THE TRANSMISSION IN MY 2000 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX STARTED SHIFTING FUNNY THEN IT WOULD SHIFT FINE AFTER SHUTTING IT OFF AND RESTARTING AFTER THIS HAPPENING A FEW TIMES I TOOK IT TO A TRANS SHOP AND THEY INFORMED ME THAT THIS A COMMON PROBLEM ON GM CARS AND THAT THE REPAIR WOULD BE $600-$700 THE CAR ONLY HAS 60,000 MILES.AFTER TALKING TO A PERSON FROM GM HE ADMITED THAT THEY HAD A BAD SUPPLIER OF PARTS FROM 1998-2000 AND THAT IF IT WAS UNDER WARRANTY THEY WOULD HAVE FIXED IT FOR FREE.WELL ITS NOT UNDER WARRANTY AND IM STUCK WITH A $600+ BILL TO FIX A PROBLEM THEY WHERE AWARE OF.THE GUY AT THE TRANS SHOP SAYS HE SEES ABOUT 3-4 OF THESE A WEEK.ALSO IF YOU DO ANY SEARCHES AND READING ON THE 4T65E TRANS YOU WILL FIND ALOT OF PEOPLE COMPLAINING OF THE SAME THING.TO FIX THIS TRANS THEY PULL IT ALMOST APART AND PUT NEW PRESSURE SOLENOIDS IN IT.*AK
THE TRANSMISSION IN MY 2000 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX GT HAS BEEN SHIFTING WITH A "HARD" SHIFT AFTER ABOUT 30-40 MINUTES OF TRAVEL. THIS USUALLY HAPPENS AFTER I HAVE COME TO A FULL STOP OR AFTER A SLOW TURN AS IF WHEN COMING OFF THE FREEWAY AND MERGING INTO TRAFFIC. THIS GOES AWAY AFTER I TURN THE MOTOR OFF, WAIT FOR APPROX. 10 MIN. AND RESTART THE MOTOR AND AT TIMES DOES NOT RETURN UNTIL I TRAVEL FOR A FEW MILES. *AK
POOR LIGHT OUTPUT OF HEADLAMPS DUE TO FOGGING AND OR DETERIATION OF LENS ON LOW/HIGH BEAM ASSEMBLY. HEADLAMPS TURN OFF WHEN HVAC FAN SWITCH IS IN ANY POSITION EXCEPT THE 'OFF" POSITION.
NHTSA RECALL CAMPAIGN 00V116000; GENERAL MOTORS ISSUED A SUSPENSION RECALL. THIS VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED DUE TO VIN ALTHOUGH IT HAD SUSPENSION PROBLEMS, WHICH MADE IT DIFFICULT TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE. *AK

STEERING IS HARD TO TURN AT LOW SPEEDS. HAVE HEARD POPPING SOUNDS. POWER STEERING FLUID IS GOOD. WHEN BRAKING CAR PULLS TO THE LEFT, WHEN LETTING OFF THE BRAKE THE STEER WHEEL TURNS. I HAVE A 200 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX GT ON MONDY DEC 20,2004 I NOTICED THE STEERING ON MY CAR WAS ARMSTRONG POWER STEERING SO I TOOK TO A MECHANIC AND HE SAID THE RACK AND PINION WAS LEAKING, AND SEEMED TO BE THE PROBLEM I ONLY HAVE 32,000 MILES ON THIS AND MY RESEARCH FOUND OUT I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS PROBLEM. I WAS WONDERING IF PONTIAC HAD A RECALL ON THIS PROBLEM.*AK
I WANTED TO MAKE YOU AWARE OF A POTENTIAL SAFETY HAZARD ON THE ROAD WITHIN GM VEHICLES. I ALREADY HAD TWO MAJOR TRANSMISSION REPAIRS ON CAR WITH ABOUT 75,000 MILES. THE FIRST PROBLEM OCCURRED WHEN MY CAR WAS BARELY OUT OF WARRANTY, AT APPROXIMATELY 42,000 MILES. THE TRANSMISSION STOPPED SHIFTING INTO OVERDRIVE. THIS FORCED US TO DRIVE 150 MILES BACK HOME ONLY GOING 40 MPH. THIS WEEKEND, I EXPERIENCED A TOTAL TRANSMISSION FAILURE. WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY, MY CAR SUDDENLY MADE A LOUD NOISE AND DECELERATED FROM 65 MPH TO AROUND 35 MPH IMMEDIATELY. THE DEFECT ALMOST CAUSED A MAJOR ACCIDENT AS WE WERE IN THE HIGH SPEED LANE. WHEN WE GOT OFF THE FREEWAY AND PARKED, WE REALIZED THE CAR WOULD NO LONGER GO IN REVERSE. I SHELLED OUT ALMOST $1,800 ON A REBUILT TRANSMISSION. MY REPAIR SHOP INFORMED ME THAT THEY ARE REGULARLY DOING REBUILDS ON THE SAME GM TRANSMISSION THAT IS IN MY PONTIAC. A COMMON SIGN ON THE FAILURE IS THE LOSS OF THE REVERSE GEAR. IN FACT, PARMA TRANSMISSION HAD DONE THREE ALONE DURING THE WEEK MY CAR WAS IN THE SHOP. I AM SHOCKED THAT GM WOULD INSTALL SUCH A FAULTY AND DANGEROUS PIECE OF MACHINERY ON ITS VEHICLES. I HARDLY FIND IT COINCIDENTAL THAT ALL OF THESE OWNERS ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEMS WITH YOUR CARS. PLEASE BE SURE NOT TO GROUP THIS PROBLEM JUST WITH PONTIAC. THEY PUT THE SAME TRANSMISSION IN MANY OF THEIR CARS, SO YOU WILL NEED TO FIGURE OUT ALL THE VEHICLES THAT ARE UNDER THIS PART NUMBER. I DID NOT KEEP THE OLD PARTS, BUT I AM SURE THE SHOP I WORK WITH WOULD BE ABLE TO START SAVING ALL OF THE DESTROYED COMPONENTS THAT THEY CONTINUALLY REPAIR. *NM
SHORTLY AFTER I BOUGHT MY USED 2000 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX WITH 52,000 MI. IN MAY 2004, I NOTICED IT WAS GOING THROUGH AN UNUSUALLY LARGE AMOUNT OF ENGINE COOLANT AND OIL. I TOOK IT TO 2 DIFFERENT SHOPS AFTER HAVING MY LOW COOLANT LIGHT CONTINUOUSLY COME ON BETWEEN OIL CHANGES. BOTH SHOPS TOLD ME THAT IT NEEDED A NEW INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET, WHICH WAS AROUND $700 TO REPAIR DUE TO THERE BEING SO MUCH LABOR INVOLVED. (AND SAID IF I DIDN'T GET IT FIXED, IT COULD LEAD TO MY ENGINE OVERHEATING AND BLOWING UP!) BY THE TIME WE REALIZED WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS, MY WARRANTY HAD ALSO RAN OUT. I GOT IT FIXED ONCE THE PROBLEM WAS IDENTIFIED IN NOV. 2004, WHEN THE CAR HAD 61,000 MILES. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH ONLINE A FEW MONTHS LATER, FOUND THAT THIS SEEMS TO BE QUITE A COMMON PROBLEM IN PONTIAC'S AROUND THAT YEAR, ONCE THEY GET TO AROUND 50,000 MILES. OR SO (WHICH MY CAR WAS AT WHEN PURCHASED) I DON'T FEEL THAT A 4 YEAR OLD CAR WITH MILEAGE THAT LOW SHOULD ALREADY HAVE SUCH AN EXPENSIVE PROBLEM THAT NEEDS TO BE FIXED, IT SEEMS TO ME THAT IT IS A MANUFACTURING PROBLEM, THEY PUT IN FAULTY, TEMPORARY INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKETS IN THEIR CARS AND THEY SHOULD PAY TO REPLACE THEM. *JB

I HAVE TRIED TO CONTACT PONTIAC NUMEROUS TIMES ABOUT THIS BOTH AT THE DEALER LEVEL AND THE CUSTOMER SERVICE DEPARTMENT FOR PONTIAC BUT HAVE HAD NO RESPONSE. ALSO, I HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING A LEAKAGE INTO THE VEHICLE OF WHAT APPEARS TO BE WATER. THIS HAS BEEN OCCURING SINCE ABOUT THE SECOND YEAR I HAVE HAD MY VEHICLE. CAUSES LEAK OUT OF COOLANT, MIGRATION OF COOLANT TO OIL AND OIL TO COOLANT RESERVOIR DAMAGING INTERNAL COMPONENTS AND HOSES AS WELL AS RUNNING VEHICLE LOW ON FLUID LEVELS AND MAKING A GENERAL MESS OF EVERYTHING AROUND IT. GM IS FULLY AWARE OF THIS DEFECT YET REFUSES TO ACT ON IT IN THE FORM OF A RECALL. THERE ARE NUMEROUS TSB'S REGARDING REPLACEMENT OF THE GASKET WITH A NEWER METALLIC VERSION CREATED DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE PLASTIC VERSIONS IN SO MANY GM VEHICLES FAIL. A RECALL IS DEMANDED. *NM
