2001 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO RECALL NOTICE 15V-701 REPAIRS AND SEEKS REIMBURSEMENT. *LD ACCORDING TO THE INVOICE, THERMOSTAT, INTAKE MANIFOLD AND VALVE COVER GASKET WERE REPLACED. *JB
MY FRONT PASSENGER SIDE BRAKE LINE BURST SUDDENLY UNDER BRAKING WHILE EXITING THE HIGHWAY AT 70MPH. IT APPEARS ALL OTHER LINES ARE RUSTY AS WELL AND COULD RESULT IN ANOTHER FAILURE. I LOVE IN MINNESOTA SO SALT COULD CONTRIBUTE, BUT IT WAS DEFINITELY CORPORATE NEGLIGENCE. THE AGENCY FAILED TO ISSUE A RECALL FOR THIS IN 2015 FOR GM TRUCKS. I THINK THIS IS A MUCH LARGER ISSUE FOR ALL W-BODY GM CARS AS WELL. I WAS FORTUNATE ENOUGH THAT THE EXIT RAMP HAD A YEILD TURN ONTO THE NEXT ROAD INSTEAD OF A STOP. THIS COULD HAVE KILLED ME AND WILL KILL PEOPLE IF NOTHING IS DONE. PLEASE TAKE ACTION AND LOOK INTO THIS.
OUR CAR BURNED UP ALMOST COMPLETELY, STARTING IN THE ENGINE AREA. THE FIRE APPEARED AFTER DRIVING AND PARKING THE CAR. POLICEMEN AND FIREMEN CAME TO EXTINGUISH AND SAID CAR WAS SO DESTROYED ANY FURTHER INVESTIGATION WOULD BE POSSIBLE. WE HAVE PHOTOS OF THE CAR AND OTHER WITNESSES. AFTER WE HAD IT TOWED AND CRUSHED, GM RECALL 15757 CAME OUT. HOWEVER THEY ARE NOT APPLYING THIS RECALL TO OUR CAR. DO WE HAVE ANY RIGHTS?
ACCELERATOR PEDAL GOT STUCK WHILE MERGING INTO TRAFFIC. AFTER MERGING INTO TRAFFIC I REMOVED MY FOOT FROM THE GAS PEDAL BUT THE CAR RPMS WERE CONTINUING TO GO HIGHER. INMEDIATELLY HIT ON THE BRAKES AND THE CAR WAS STOPPED BUT THE ENGINE WAS REVVING. THEN I PUT THE TRANSMISSION IN NEUTRAL AND TURNED OF THE ENGINE. WITH THE ENGINE OFF AND MY HAZZARD LIGHTS ON, I PUSHED ON THE GAS PEDAL SEVERAL TIMES UNTIL IT RETURNED TO THE NORMAL POSITION. I RE-STARTED MY CAR AND THE PEDAL WAS AGAIN FINE. THIS HAPPENED IN DES PLAINES ILLINOIS AT AROUND 7:45 AM. NOT SURE EXACTLY HOW COLD IT WAS, BUT I GUESS IT WAS AROUND 15F. I NOTICED THAT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THE 2005 MODEL CARS FOR AN ISSUE WITH THE SPRINGS FAILING. GM RECALL 05018. I CALLED THE DEALER, BUT THEY SAID THERE ARE NO RECALLS OUTSTANDING FOR MY CAR. *JS

CAR JUST DIES WHILE DRIVING REPLACED MAF SENSOR MAP SENSOR WAS REPLACED PREVIOUS. TOOK CAR OF PROBLEM. 2 MONTH LATER SPUTTERING CODE CAME BACK CATALYTIC CONVERTER. HAD THAT CUT OFF. 2 WEEKS LATER CAR WON'T START CHANGED CRANKSHAFT SENSOR STARTED BUT MISFIRE COIL PACKS CHANGED AND IGNITION CONTROL MODULE. NEW SPARK PLUGS AND WIRE. CAR STARTED RAN PERFECT. NEXT DAY CAR WOULDN'T START. WENT BACK TO SHOP MECHANIC STARTED LOOKING AT SOME WIRES CAR WOULDN'T STILL START. NEXT DAY CAR STARTS UP JUST FINE N RUNNING PERFECTLY. WHEN ITS NOT STARTING IT WILL CRANK JUST NOT FIRE. HAVEN'T CHECKED TO SEE IF IT WILL RUN YET TODAY THOUGH. BROUGHT IT HOME YESTERDAY. COULD A KEY CAUSE IT TO CRANK AND NOT FIRE. *TR

THE KEY COULD BE REMOVED AFTER NUMEROUS ATTEMPTS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE ENTIRE IGNITION SWITCH CYLINDER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 106,000.
AS I WAS DRIVING (APPROXIMATELY 1 MILE FROM HOME) I LET UP OFF OF THE ACCELERATOR BECAUSE I WAS ALMOST READY TO TURN O TO MY DESTINATION, WHEN I TOOK MY FOOT OFF OF THE ACCELERATOR THE ENGINE BEGAN REVVING UP AND THE ACCELERATOR WENT TO THE FLOOR, THE RPM NEEDLE WENT UP TO 7 AND IT SOUNDED AS IF THE ENGINE WAS GOING TO BLOW. I PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND HAD THE BRAKE PEDAL TO THE FLOOR AND THE CAR WAS SCOOTING AS IF IT WAS STILL IN GEAR AND TRYING TO PULL ITSELF. I HAD TO PUT THE CAR IN PARK TO GET IT TO STOP AND I TURNED THE ENGINE OFF. AFTER SITTING THERE AND CALMING DOWN BECAUSE I WAS SCARED TO DEATH, I STARTED THE ENGINE AND IT RAN NORMAL, I PROBABLY SHOULDN'T HAVE BUT SINCE I WAS SO CLOSE TO HOME, I DROVE THE CAR HOME WITHOUT ANY ISSUES AND AM NOW AFRAID TO EVEN START THE CAR ANYMORE. IS THIS AN ISSUE WITH THIS VEHICLE? I HAD MY GRAND DAUGHTER AND 2 OF MY DAUGHTERS IN THE CAR WITH ME AND AM GRATEFUL THAT NO ONE WAS INJURED. *TR

WIRING HARNESS AND PLASTICS FROM THERE ACROSS FIREWALL TO MAIN FUSE BOX AND ELECTRICS AND PLASTICS ON TOP OF ENGINE MELTING. EXTINGUISHER USED TO PUT OUT FIRE AND DISCONNECTED BATTERY CABLE. REMOVED POWDER WITH WATER HOSE AND SURVEYED DAMAGED IT APPEARS TO HAVE STARTED AT OR VERY NEAR THE ABS MODULE/RELAY BOX AREA AND SPREAD TO FIRE WALL AND AROUND TOWARDS THE BATTERY AREA FROM THERE. THIS IS NOT THE FIRST INCIDENT, THIS IS JUST THE MOST RECENT. ON MONDAY, 4/7, I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY GOING HOME FROM WORK IN THE MIDDLE OF STORM AROUND 5 PM AND THE SHUT OFF. ITS AS IF THE KEY WAS ONLY TURNED ENOUGH TO TURN ON THE BATTERY. THIS HAS HAPPENED ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS GOING AS FAR BACK AS 2012 WHEN I PURCHASED THE CAR. IT HAPPENS MORE FREQUENTLY IF I DON'T REMOVE MY CAR KEY FROM THE REST OF MY KEYS. MY POWER STEERING LOCKS AND THE CAR IS UNABLE TO TURN. *TR
MY DAUGHTER ARRIVED HOME: TEN MINUTES LATER SOMEONE WAS BANGING ON OUR DOOR LETTING US KNOW THE CAR WAS ON FIRE. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVED AND EXTENGUISHED THE FLAMES. IT IS A TOTAL LOSS AND WE HAD LIABILITY. WE BOUGHT THE CAR ON FEBRUARY 13, 2014 FROM AN INDIVIDUAL. WE DID NOT KNOW, BUT ARE NOW AWARE THAT THERE IS A RECALL ON THIS PARTICULAR MAKE AND MODEL FOR UNDER THE HOOD FIRE. WE HAD NO WARNING AND HAD NOT DETECTED ANY MALFUNCTION IN THE VEHICLE UNTIL THIS. IN ADDITION, THE POWER STEERING FLUID WAS LEAKING FROM THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE POWER STEERING PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V400000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM). THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 140,000.
ORIGINAL OWNER OF VEHICLE. IN JANUARY THE CAR SHUT OFF WHILE MY WIFE WAS DRIVING ON A THREE LANE HIGHWAY. TOWED TO SHOP AND NEXT DAY THE CAR STARTED FINE WITH NO FAULT CODES. A FEW WEEKS LATER THE CAR SHUT OFF WHILE WARMING UP IN DRIVEWAY TWICE. TOOK TO AUTOZONE TO READ CODES, NONE AGAIN. A FEW WEEKS LATER THE CAR SHUT OFF ON A THREE LANE HIGHWAY WITH TWO CHILDREN IN CAR. I WAS ABLE TO GET OFF ROAD SAFELY. A STS AUTO SHOP WAS NEAR BY SO THEY TOOK IT TO THE SHOP. THEY BROUGHT THE CAR IN THE SHOP AND IT SHUT OFF ONCE BUT WAS CLOSING TIME SO THEY LOOKED AT IT THE NEXT DAY. NEXT DAY THE CAR STARTED FINE AND THEY TRIED TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM, BUT THEY WERE UNABLE. NO CODES AGAIN. THE CAR HAS NOT BEEN USED SINCE. OTHER HISTORY, PRIOR TO THIS THE CAR HAD SUFFERED NO START CONDITIONS FOR ABOUT FIVE YEARS. EACH TIME NO CODES WERE PRESENT. IN THE FALL 2013 THE FOLLOWING PARTS WERE REPLACED. FUEL PUMP, FUEL FILTER, CRANK SENSOR, IGNITION MODULE, FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR. THE CAR IS GOING TO HAVE THE IGNITION CYLINDER REPLACED NEXT. FYI - I HAVE EXTENSIVE MECHANICAL BACKGROUND, FAA LICENSED AIRCRAFT MECHANIC WITH 26 YEARS WORKING ON LARGE AIRCRAFT (747,777 ECT). I WOULD SEND IN CYLINDER IF THIS IS A POSITIVE FIX. BOTH THESE SHUT DOWNS WERE VERY DANGEROUS FOR ME AND MY FAMILY. *TR
ON JAN 9, 2014, I WAS PARKED IN MY CAR HAVING LUNCH WITH THE MOTOR RUNNING. FOR NO APPARENT REASON, THE ENGINE CAUGHT FIRE, CAUSING THE FUEL LINES TO BURST. THE CAR WAS NOT DRIVABLE AFTER THAT. THAT EVENING, WHEN I GOT HOME, I HAD A RECALL FROM GM FOR MY VEHICLE IN THE MAIL. (CODE 07035) I CALLED GM THE FOLLOWING DAY, TOLD THEM OF THE INCIDENT AND THEY BECAME MY BEST FRIENDS, ESPECIALLY WHEN I TOLD THEM NO ONE WAS INJURED. GM MADE AN APPOINTMENT AND HAD ME TOW (AT MY EXPENSE) MY CAR TO SAM SWOPE AUTO CENTER WHERE IT WAS EVALUATED. AT NO TIME DID SAM SWOPE SAY THE FIRE WASN'T CAUSED BY THE RECALL ISSUE. THE BILL TO REPAIR WAS GOING TO BE $4,700. SAM SWOPE SAID THEY COULD NOT FIX WITHOUT AUTHORIZATION FROM GM. AFTER 2 WEEKS OF GETTING THE RUNAROUND AND BEING ASKED QUESTIONS LIKE, "HOW MANY PONTIACS HAVE YOU OWNED" AND "HOW LOYAL OF A CUSTOMER ARE YOU", THEY DECIDED THE CAR WAS TOO OLD AND HAD TOO MANY MILES TO REPAIR AND STATED THAT GM'S LIABILITY ENDS 4 YRS AFTER PURCHASE, BUT DID OFFER TO FIX THE RECALL. I ASKED WHY IF THEY DIDN'T ASSUME ANY LIABILITY AFTER 4 YRS, WHY SEND A RECALL. THE REP STATED THAT THEY ARE COMPUTER GENERATED. I EXPLAINED THAT I DIDN'T WANT TO SUE ANYONE, I JUST WANTED MY CAR EITHER FIXED OR TOTALED OUT SO I COULD PURCHASE SOMETHING ELSE. BY THE WAY, I'VE OWNED 7 PONTIACS, AND 12 GM CARS TOTAL. I'M 62 YRS OLD. AND, THE CAR WASN'T A WORN OUT PIECE OF JUNK. IT HAD EVERY OPTION GM OFFERED INCLUDING HEADS UP DISPLAY, BOSE SOUND SYSTEM, HEATED 6-WAY SEATS, SUN ROOF AND MORE. THE CAR IS MINT. SECOND REQUEST...ON JAN 9, 2014, I WAS PARKED IN MY CAR HAVING LUNCH WITH THE MOTOR RUNNING. FOR NO APPARENT REASON, THE ENGINE CAUGHT FIRE, CAUSING THE FUEL LINES TO BURST. THE CAR WAS NOT DRIVABLE AFTER THAT. THAT EVENING, WHEN I GOT HOME, I HAD A RECALL FROM GM FOR MY VEHICLE IN THE MAIL. (CODE 07035) I CALLED GM THE FOLLOWING DAY, TOLD THEM OF THE INCIDENT AND THEY BECAME MY BEST FRIENDS, ESPECIALLY WHEN I TOLD THEM NO ONE WAS INJURED. GM MADE AN APPOINTMENT AND HAD ME TOW (AT MY EXPENSE) MY CAR TO SAM SWOPE AUTO CENTER WHERE IT WAS EVALUATED. AT NO TIME DID SAM SWOPE SAY THE FIRE WASN'T CAUSED BY THE RECALL ISSUE. THE BILL TO REPAIR WAS GOING TO BE $4,700. SAM SWOPE SAID THEY COULD NOT FIX WITHOUT AUTHORIZATION FROM GM. AFTER 2 WEEKS OF GETTING THE RUNAROUND AND BEING ASKED QUESTIONS LIKE, "HOW MANY PONTIACS HAVE YOU OWNED" AND "HOW LOYAL OF A CUSTOMER ARE YOU", THEY DECIDED THE CAR WAS TOO OLD AND HAD TOO MANY MILES TO REPAIR AND STATED THAT GM'S LIABILITY ENDS 4 YRS AFTER PURCHASE, BUT DID OFFER TO FIX THE RECALL. I ASKED WHY IF THEY DIDN'T ASSUME ANY LIABILITY AFTER 4 YRS, WHY SEND A RECALL. THE REP STATED THAT THEY ARE COMPUTER GENERATED. I EXPLAINED THAT I DIDN'T WANT TO SUE ANYONE, I JUST WANTED MY CAR EITHER FIXED OR TOTALED OUT SO I COULD PURCHASE SOMETHING ELSE. BY THE WAY, I'VE OWNED 7 PONTIACS, AND 12 GM CARS TOTAL. I'M 62 YRS OLD. AND, THE CAR WASN'T A WORN OUT PIECE OF JUNK. IT HAD EVERY OPTION GM OFFERED INCLUDING HEADS UP DISPLAY, BOSE SOUND SYSTEM, HEATED 6-WAY SEATS, SUN ROOF AND MORE. THE CAR IS MINT. THE COOLANT AND ABS LIGHT STAYS ON. IT USED TO BE THE ENGINE LIGHT BUT SINCE I HAVE GOTTEN THAT FIXED THIS IS THE ON-GOING PROBLEM. AT LEAST IT DOESN'T AFFECT ME PASSING A SMOG TEST NOW. MY BIGGEST ISSUE IS THE FUEL GAUGE. IT WILL READ FULL OR EMPTY AND NOTHING IN BETWEEN. I USED TO BE ABLE TO ESTIMATE, BY CHECKING MY MILEAGE WHEN I WAS NEAR FULL BUT IT IS HARD TO TELL NOW, BECAUSE IT BOUNCES BATH AND FORTH AT TIMES. MY LAST ISSUE IS HEAT. IT USED TO WORK WELL BUT NOW IT WON'T GIVE ME HEAT. THE AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM STILL WORKS GREAT.

A CAR SPED OUT FROM A STOP SIGN ON MY RIGHT INTO MY LANE AND SLAMMED ON THEIR BRAKES TO MAKE AN ILLEGAL LEFT TURN. I HAD TO SLAM ON MY BRAKES. MY CAR SLOWED TO WITHIN A COUPLE OF FEET OF THEIR BUMPER AND THEN I LOST BRAKING. MY BRAKE PEDAL CONTINUED TOWARD THE FLOOR AND MY CAR CONTINUED FORWARD. THE PEDAL WENT TO WITHIN A FEW INCHES BEFORE THE FLOOR WHERE I COULD FEEL THE BRAKES "RE-ENGAGE" AND I WAS ABLE TO COMPLETELY STOP MY CAR WITHIN A COUPLE OF INCHES OF THEIR BUMPER. WAS ABLE TO MAKE IT THE NEXT 12 MILES TO MY HOME AND CHECKED THE STEERING FLUID RESERVOIR. IT WAS EMPTY AND THERE WAS A LINE OF BIG DROPS BEHIND MY CAR FROM WHERE I TURNED TO PARK. POURED OVER HALF A BOTTLE OF BRAKE FLUID IN THE NEXT DAY, PUMPED THE BRAKES. NOT BETTER. I BACKED MY CAR OUT OF THE SPACE AND THERE WAS A PUDDLE WHERE THE REAR OF MY CAR WAS AND THE RESERVOIR WAS AGAIN EMPTY. LOOKED UNDER THE BACK OF THE CAR AND EVERYTHING WAS WET FROM THE DRIVER SIDE TO THE MIDDLE. CAR TOWED FOR REPAIR THAT DAY AND MECHANIC FOUND RUSTED BRAKE LINE. *TR

THE WHOLE CAR WAS DESTROYED, FRONT TIRES MELTED OFF, EVERYTHING UNDER HOOD WAS MELTED AND DESTROYED, THE WHOLE INSIDE WAS FRIED OR MELTED. WE LOST GPS, GARAGE DOOR OPENER, HIS SCHOOL BOOKS, HIS STEREO AND CD'S AND SOME MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS. CAR WAS HAULED TO A SALVAGE YARD AND DID NOT HAVE FULL COVERAGE ON CAR SO LOST EVERYTHING. THE VEHICLE IS RUNNING AND THE AUTO LIGHTS TURN ON AT NITE,WITH THE FAN SPEED ON OFF POSITION,THE LIGHTS SHUTOFF WHEN TURNING ON FAN. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED PRIOR TO THE FIRE UNDER A RECALL ASSOCIATED WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 08V118000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING). THE REPAIR REMEDY AS MENTIONED IN THE RECALL WAS NOT PERFORMED DUE TO THE LEFT ROCKET COVER GASKET AVAILABILITY HOWEVER, THE WIRE LOOM AND SPARK PLUGS WERE REPLACED. THE CONTACT EXPERIENCED THE CONSEQUENCE OF A FIRE AS INDICATED IN THE RECALL DEFECT, AS A RESULT OF THE INSUFFICIENT REMEDY PREVIOUSLY PERFORMED ON THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 145,000.
I HAVE READ NUMEROUS REPORTS OF PONTIAC GRAND PRIX'S FROM 1997-2003 CATCHING FIRE. THE REMEDY OFFERED BY GENERAL MOTORS WAS TO REPLACE THE FAILED VALVE COVER GASKET IN THE FRONT OF THE ENGINE (RADIATOR SIDE). THE PROBLEM IS THAT THE FAILURE IT IS NOT UNIQUE TO THE FRONT GASKET, AS THE FRONT AND REAR VALVE COVER GASKETS ARE IDENTICAL, AND THE REAR ONE FAILS AND LEAKS JUST AS MUCH AS THE FRONT. THE REASON GENERAL MOTORS REPAIRS ONLY THE FRONT GASKET IS THAT IT IS FAIRLY EASY TO REPLACE AND IS EASILY ACCESSIBLE. THE REAR VALVE COVER GASKET, HOWEVER, HAS A MYRIAD OF COMPONENTS IN THE WAY THAT HAVE TO BE REMOVED AND DISCONNECTED FOR ACCESS TO THE VALVE COVER AND GASKET, WHICH IS A MUCH MORE TIME CONSUMING AND COSTLY REPAIR. GM DENIES THIS FACT AND FORCES US TO BELIEVE THAT IT IS ONLY THE FRONT GASKET THAT IS TROUBLESOME. I OWN THREE GRAND PRIX GTP MODELS (1999,2001,2002) AND EVERY ONE HAS LEAKING VALVE COVER GASKETS, WITH SOMETIMES THE REAR ONE LEAKING MORE THAN THE FRONT DUE TO ITS CLOSE PROXIMITY TO THE FIREWALL, RESULTING IS LESS COOLING AND AIRFLOW, MAKING IT MORE SUSCEPTIBLE TO DAMAGE FROM HEAT, ESPECIALLY FOR A POORLY DESIGNED OR MADE OF INFERIOR MATERIAL GASKET IN THE FIRST PLACE. NOW I AGREE THAT THE AGE OF THE VEHICLE MAY BE AN ISSUE AS GASKETS DRY UP AND PERHAPS CRACK DUE TO THE MANY HEATING AND COOLING CYCLES OVER THE LIFE OF A VEHICLE, BUT SINCE GM HAS ACKNOWLEDGED A GASKET PROBLEM AND HAS REDESIGNED THE GASKET, BOTH SHOULD BE REPLACED AS A MEASURE OF RESPONSIBILITY ON GM'S PART, AND AS CONSIDERATION FOR THE SAFETY OF THEIR CUSTOMER BASE. WHY GM DOESN'T DO THE RIGHT THING IS ANYONE'S GUESS, BUT IGNORING CONSUMERS COMPLAINTS ON SUCH A SERIOUS ISSUE IS SHAMEFUL!. *TR
