The electric power steering failed on the truck. It is almost impossible to turn. Sometimes it will work again after cranking the vehicle only to have it fail again in few minutes. This makes the truck undrivable and unsafe.
Loss of power steering
sudden failure of power steering, with out any prior warning or symptoms
The steering went out on my 2013 Dodge Ram 1500. I purchased this vehicle used in July 2016 The dealership stated that this recall has already been fixed however if that's the case it wasn't fixed properly and failed again. To fix the problem is thousands of dollars. There was no warning lamps that indicated a problem. It acutely happened.
Driving to work and the electric power steering quit working as I was turning onto the roadway, this caused me to almost hit an oncoming vehicle, I was able to avoid hitting said vehicle.
Power steering went out with no warning.
Electronic power steering unit failure. EPS Unit. Loss of power assist. Warning light came on Friday Sept 29, 2023 at approximately 1:30pm est. when I entered the vehicle and started the engine. Vehicle had been driven and parked for approximately 10 min before I went back to vehicle and leave that location. Warning light was a large icon of a red steering wheel with a red exclamation mark ️ then the screen said, “service power steering “ with the red indicator still remaining on. No other warning lights or symptoms prior to the above information. Vehicle taken to Signature Automotive 2725 Northgate Court Cumming, GA 30041 (770) 889-5959 at 8:00 am 10/4/23 for diagnosis. Service advisor stated that there was internal circuit failure. Throwing all “sorts” of internal codes in the electronic unit. Was unable to have system Reestablish communication. Entire rack and pinion unit needs replacement. Called Dodge dealership at 5855 Ga Highway 400 Cumming, GA 30028-4194 I spoke with parts dept. regarding OEM replacement , etc. Advised me that it would be a week to 10 business days before they could get the part. Even then didn’t guarantee that because of the latest strike happening. Informed me it could take much longer. I was also advised not to drive the vehicle. Due to the fact of steering could lock-up while driving and cause a crash. Putting myself and others at risk! At this time the indicator light is still on. Remains on when vehicle is running. No power assist. Extremely difficult to turn.
Power steering failed while driving making steering very difficult. The safety of myself and my passenger were definitely put at risk as we were in the midst of a left 90 degree turn when the failure occurred. When failure occurred a warning light appeared on dash. Problem persisted after restarting vehicle. Incident just occurred today. In researching problem I saw where several hundred people had reported the same problem, so I thought I should report it. I will take it to the dealer for service and ask them to save any replaced parts.
On April 5 2022 I took my 2013 dodge ram 1500 5.7 2wd truck to get repaired it cost me $5000 to fix the lifters, cam ,oil pump , rocker arms ,push rods hoses, manifold bolts too cause they were stuck this is at 154,000 mile and like 40,000 mile later 9/25/23 it gives me a code p1416 misfire cylinder 6 / come again. Now the cam could be damaged too just to get the truck opened up again is $2600 Mechanic says the lifter could be deactivated or worse could of been damaging the cam ??? Now what Can you guys help me please
Power steering failure without warning when driving, steering wheel with exclamation illuminated on dash. Serious and dangerous situation that could have potentially resulted in an acccident or injury. Dodge Chrysler Fiat needs to issue recall immediately.
Truck will stall out pulling out in traffic with no signs of a problem. It happened to me today with my kid in the truck. This is unacceptable. This trucks are to expensive to have this. It also will surge and try to go without foot on gas. This is totally unsafe. Dodge needs to fix this.
Failure mode is currently unknown but electric steering failed when pulling vehicle out of the garage. Currently waiting on dealer to diagnose and repair issue but had this failure occured at highway speeds, this could have resulted in severe injury to the driver or other motorists.
Electrical power steering failed. I reported this last year to this agency, but somehow it is not available. Cranked up vehicle and the power steering failed on and off. At times it would clear out until the light stayed on and the power steering stopped working.
After picking up some supplies from the store, I was about to make a left turn onto main road from the parking lot area when the electric power steering went out, so I had to turn the steering with tremendous force to get into a safe spot. So I contacted two shops and one quoted me for like $3900 and would take months to get replacement parts. Also, contacted another shop as well and still haven't heard from them.
Power steering comes and goes with no rhyme or reason. You have to shut truck off and restart and hope it comes back on. Have looked at replacement parts but they are hard to come by and repair is expensive. Looking at the web it seems like there should be a recall.
The power steering failed without warning while I was pulling into my driveway and I could no longer turn the steering wheel. I was completely surprised by this and ended up driving about 10 feet into my front yard grass before slamming on the brakes and coming to a stop. Kids often play in this area of my yard...this could have ended tragically. My vehicle was towed to a repair shop where it was confirmed that the power steering system failed and had to be replaced. Only the repair shop has inspected the faulty power steering system, but I did take pictures of it when I picked up the vehicle. There was no warning light prior to the failure but, Immediately afterwards, a light and message indicating "SERVICE POWER STEERING" came on in my in-dash display. I keep my vehicle well maintained and with only 90,000 miles, this failure was inexcusably premature.
I believe the problem is with the electronic steering component. This issue started about a month ago. When I'm backing out of my driveway it seems the power steering is failing, making it hard to steer. Secondly when I'm at a red light making a right or left hand turn, the power steering fails making it hard to make the turn, and once the turn is completed, I must manually straighten the vehicle out. I looked for recalls and saw there has been 200 plus complaints about this year vehicle and the steering problem. The repair cost is very expensive what I read on line. I have not taken the vehicle to an Dodge dealer yet, trying to do some research first to see if this problem was recalled Please help and thank you in advance. Respectfully, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
THE POWER STEERING GOES OUT INTERMITENTLY. SOMETIMES IT COMES BACK, OTHER TIMES IT WILL STAY OUT FOR A PROLONGED TIME. WARNING LAMP ONLY COMES ON ONCE THE POWER STEERING GOES OUT.
Electronic Power Steering died. Could not turn steering wheel. I was just informed by repair shop that the steering control module and rack/pinion will have to be replaced at a cost of $3,600. No warning lights prior to the failure. Service center has ordered the parts and I am having them installed next week so I don't have a receipt for repairs yet.
First intermittent, then full loss of power steering when driving. This is a common problem with 2013-2016 ram trucks and should be recalled for safety reasons
Gearshift Bracket Broken into two pieces. MOPAR Part number 5057506AD.
While driving on the highway may power steering stopped working. I didnt know it stopped working until I started to steer to stay in the lane. This could have been a major problem if I needed to move suddenly and couldn't. I found on the electric power steering has been a problem in these. I had no warning, no alert, nothing. Just felt it and then noticed the warning light on the dash. I pulled over and took off the negative cable. This reset it and it continued to work for about 15 miles and it did it again. Now its like that all the time. I am starting to work the problem to figure out what is exactly wrong with it.
Unable to steer truck. Power steering malfunction. Places driver and others on the road at risk. Unable to turn steering wheel.

The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 130,000.
Steer controls were lost while driving around a 3 lane curb. I was responsive enough to refrain from hitting the vehicle in the lane next to me. I have not had the vehicle checked by a mechanic but I have investigated all electrical connections as well as fuses and found no culprit.
I was driving home from the grocery store my trucked started jerking to the right and I lost all power steering the safety light came on. I lost control of the truck pulling into driveway and took out my mailbox due to the power steering failure. This had not been a previous issue and it just occurred while driving
The power steering went out. I took it to the Dodge dealership and they said it was the electric power steering module and to replace it the rack and pinion steering had to be replaced as well at a total cost of $4100.00 . This vehicle only has 36400 miles on it and I feel it should be included in a recall.
Power Steering not activating immediately at ignition start. It takes 2-3 minutes. It was a few seconds at first, now it has become longer.
The contact owns a 2013 Ram 1500. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost power steering functionality. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000.
2103 Ram 1500 Electronic Power Steering failed or malfunctioned, my vehicle is available for inspection if needed The loss of power steering capabilities put my safety and the safety of my family at risk by the possibility of and accident and injury. The loss of power steering capabilities is still evident and has been electrically verified. While driving the vehicle the electric power steering unit failed. We have reset the computer and checked the fuses and it is still not working. I will be taking to the dealership today.
1. Air Ride Suspension Compressor and Air Bags keep going out. Yes it is available to inspect. 2. As i was riding coming from 4 hrs away from my home rear air suspension bag went as I was on Interstate 75 at a speed of 63 miles an hr, rear started swaying. 3. Independent Repair Service 4. No 5. An Air Suspension Service light came on then went out only saw it once maybe 3 months prior to the air bags malfunctioned As I have been reading up on this, it is a Popular issue with Ram 1500.
Service power steering fault , power steering is intermittent and will throw a code and you will loss power steering until you reset ignition! Also exhaust manifold bolts seem to break alot
Electronic power steering failed while driving. Power steering has remained inoperable and vehicle can not be safely driven.
The service power steering light appears often upon starting the truck and the steering wheel is locked. The power steering warning lamp comes on with no warning at all and the power steering locks up intermittently while driving or cornering. I have not had a dealership look it over. I just discovered this complaint form. My mechanic will take a look at it this coming weekend. Until then the truck isn't drivable and I am out of a vehicle. It is extremely dangerous and now costing me money in lost work.
The contact owns a 2013 Ram 1500. The contact stated while reversing at 2 MPH, the steering wheel was difficult to turn. The power steering warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed and determined that the power steering rack assembly needed to be replaced and reprogrammed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 62,000.
Vehicle power steering failure. Steering operating as designed until I parked in a bank parking lot to use to ATM when I attemped to back out the power steering was inop. A local repair shop dignosed the problem as an internal failure of the power steering pump. Had this happen while driving an accident would almost certainly have occured. Very unsafe, the replacement part cost more than two thousand not to include the replacment cost.
I believe the exhaust manifold is leaking as I can smell gas in the cabin and also truck makes a ticking sound that goes away after 30 seconds when it's warmed up. This seems to be a common issue with this type of truck and should be recalled.
The vehicle rolls away while still in park and showing it’s in park. No one was in the vehicle. All passengers had exited and was in a building.
Intermittent loss of Power Steering (EPS) Losing power steering limits my control of the truck, especially when it’s unpredicted. Dealership inspected the problem.
The power/electric steering fails intermittently making it impossible to control the vehicle
Steering randomly stopped working upon cranking up. Dealership says codes lead to replacing rack/pinion for $4000. There is no seen damage & nothing leading up to this problem, so I wanted to make you aware since this topic is being investigated.
POWER STEERING QUIT WORKING AND SOMETIMES WORKS INTERMINTENTLY. POWER STEERING QUIT IN THE MIDDLE OF A TURN AND I HAD TO DRIVE THOUGH A FRONT YARD TO AVOID COLLISION. HAS NOT BEEN INSPECTED, CAN NOT TAKE IT IN BECAUSE I NEED IT TO GET TO WORK. NO WARNING LIGHT PRIOR TO FAILURE, LIGHT COMES ON ONCE THE STEERING LOCKS UP.
The power steering suddenly stopped working. There was absolutely no warning prior to the incident. The part is still on my truck. I was pulling onto a major highway at the time and was just lucky there was no traffic anywhere near me or this could have caused a major wreck. If I turn the truck off and back on, the problem corrects itself, but it comes back. Sometimes after 30 secs or sometimes not until the next day, but it will always come back. I have not had it checked out yet.
While making a left turn my husband states the power steering went out and he almost lost control of the truck and hit a utility pole.
EPS stopped working. The truck has less than 40,000 miles on it.
The contact owns a 2013 Ram 1500. The contact stated while starting the vehicle, the ABS warning light was illuminated, and the cruise control feature disengaged. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the ABS module had failed and needed to be replaced. The dealer informed the contact that the part was not available and was under engineering review until April 2024. The contact related the failure to TSB Number: S200500000. Additionally, the contact stated while starting the vehicle, the power steering warning light was illuminated, and the steering wheel was difficult to turn. The contact stated that the failure occurred on two occasions. The contact turned off and restarted the vehicle on each occasion, and the warning light was no longer illuminated. Additionally, the steering wheel became inoperable. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the power steering control module (PSCM) had failed and needed to be replaced; however, the part was not yet available. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Action Number: RQ23003 (Steering). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 43,000.
While traveling 70 mph down a straight highway my power steering jerked and became inoperable with no prior indications or warnings. The Service Power Steering indication came on afterwards. I was able to regain and maintain control with great physical exertion and difficulty. If my wife, daughter, or someone with a weaker stature was driving, the results could have been catastrophic. I checked all connections and fuses related to the electric power steering and everything appeared to be is good operating condition, indicating the likely culprit is an EPS module. The nature in which the EPS failed can and will cause serious injury and death if not resolved.
