A LOUD SQUEAK IS OCCURRING WHEN I PRESS AND RELEASE MY CLUTCH. I HAD MY CLUTCH REPLACED ABOUT 10K MILES AGO DUE TO A SEIZED THROWOUT BEARING. I BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALER, THEY LUBED IT ALL UP BUT SQUEAK IS STILL THERE. THE TECH SAID THE NOISE IS ACTUALLY COMING FROM THE BRACKET THAT IS MOUNTED TO THE FIREWALL UNDER THE DASH. AFTER A FEW HOURS OF RESEARCH, I HAVE FOUND NUMEROUS POSTS ABOUT THIS ISSUE AND IT LIES WITH THE WELDS HOLDING THE BRACKET BEING FAULTY AND BREAKING. THIS CAUSES THE FIREWALL TO FLEX AND YOUR WHOLE PEDAL ASSEMBLY, CLUTCH AND BRAKE, TO MOVE AROUND WHILE IN OPERATION. *TR
I WAS OUT ALL MORNING RUNNING ERRANDS. I CAME HOME FROM ABOUT 4 HOURS OF DOING THE RUN AROUND. AT 12:25 PM I GOT HOME , TOOK MY BABIES OUT OF THE CAR AND PUT THEM DOWN FOR A NAP. I WENT OUT ABOUT 40 MINS LATER TO THE CAR AND THE KEY FOBS WERE NOT WORKING SO I THEN WENT TO UNLOCK THE DRIVER DOOR WITH THE KEY AND WHEN I OPENED IT BLACK SMOKE STARTED ROLLING OUT. I THEN CALLED 911 AND REPORTED THE FIRE. THE FIRE ITSELF WAS OUT BUT THE INSIDE OF THE CAR ALL UNDER THE DRIVER SEAT WAS BURNED UP. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT STARTED GOING THREW THE CAR AND SAID THEY ARE CLAIMING IT AS ELECTRICAL. I REPORTED IT TO MY INSURANCE COMPANY AND NOW THEY ARE INVESTIGATED IT AS WELL. THE CAR WAS TOTALED OUT BY THE INSURANCE COMPANY SINCE THERE WAS SO MUCH DAMAGE TO THE INSIDE. *TT
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 SUBARU IMPREZA WRX. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE EXPERIENCED DIFFICULTY SHIFTING GEARS AT VARIOUS SPEEDS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE CLUTCH ASSEMBLY BROKE LOOSE FROM ITS WELD. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND ADVISED THE CONTACT TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 130,000.
THE CLUTCH PEDAL ON MY 2008 WRX MAKES A LOUD CREAKING NOISE EVERY TIME IT'S DEPRESSED (IT WILL ALSO POP IF COLD OUT). AFTER READING OTHER COMPLAINTS ONLINE I FOUND THE ENTIRE CLUTCH PEDAL BRACKET ASSEMBLY (ATTACHED TO THE FORWARD FIREWALL) SHIFTS APPROX 1/4 INCH EVERY TIME THE CLUTCH PEDAL IS DEPRESSED, ALSO CAUSING THE BRAKE PEDAL TO FLEX TO THE LEFT. I CAN SEE AT LEAST TWO OF MY THREE SPOT WELDS SECURING THE CLUTCH PEDAL BRACKET TO THE FORWARD FIREWALL ARE BROKEN. THE WHOLE CLUTCH PEDAL ASSEMBLY PULLS AWAY FROM THE FIREWALL EVERY TIME THE CLUTCH PEDAL IS DEPRESSED, THE SLAVE CYLINDER UNIT VISIBLY MOVES. THIS ALLOWS THE ENTIRE CLUTCH PEDAL BRACKET ASSEMBLY TO MOVE, CAUSING THE CREAKING NOISE. IF THE BRACKET COMPLETELY SEPARATES FROM THE FIREWALL, THE CLUTCH MAY BECOME COMPLETELY INOPERATIVE, IT ALREADY FREQUENTLY FEELS LIKE I CANNOT PUSH THE CLUTCH IN FAR ENOUGH TO GET IT INTO GEAR. WHEN I INVESTIGATED THE NOISE, I NOTICED THAT THE ENTIRE CLUTCH PEDAL BRACKET ASSEMBLY (ATTACHED TO THE FORWARD FIREWALL) SHIFTS APPROX 1/4 INCH EVERY TIME THE CLUTCH PEDAL IS DEPRESSED. I FOUND THAT THE THREE SPOT WELDS SECURING THE CLUTCH PEDAL BRACKET TO THE FORWARD FIREWALL WERE BROKEN. FROM THE OUTSIDE OF THE FIREWALL, JUST UNDER THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS, I SAW THE SPOT WELDS PULLING AWAY FROM THE FIREWALL EVERY TIME THE CLUTCH PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED. THIS ALLOWS THE ENTIRE CLUTCH PEDAL BRACKET ASSEMBLY TO MOVE, CAUSING THE CREAKING NOISE. IF THE BRACKET COMPLETELY SEPARATES FROM THE FIREWALL, THE CLUTCH MAY BECOME COMPLETELY INOPERATIVE - ESPECIALLY DANGEROUS WHILE DRIVING...I ALSO HAVE A VIDE FILE IF NEEDED. *TR
CAR BEGAN 'STUMBLING' AT 3K RPM UNDER VERY LIGHT LOAD/THROTTLE. HAD SUBSTANTIALLY LESS POWER AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. SMALL TRACE OF WHITE SMOKE DURING STARTUP, ONLY HAPPENED ONCE. COMPRESSION/LEAKDOWN RESULTS; CYL1 = 115 / 10%, CYL2 = 125 / 10%, CYL3 = 117 / 18%, CYL4 = 100 / 23%. DRIVING HABITS ARE MILD, I-MODE 90% OF THE TIME, SHIFTING AT 2800-3200 RPM... CAR IS CURRENTLY AT DEALER, THEY HAVE CONFIRMED AN ISSUE AND WE'RE AWAITING RESPONSE FROM SUBARU OF AMERICA ON WHETHER OR NOT THIS WILL BE WARRANTIED. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 SUBARU IMPREZA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE EXITING A DRIVE-THRU, THE VEHICLES EXHIBITED A LOUD BANG AND THE VEHICLE IMMEDIATELY ACCELERATED ABNORMALLY. THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO APPLY THE BRAKES, BUT THERE WAS NO RESPONSE CAUSING THE CONTACT TO CRASH INTO A TREE. THE CONTACT WAS SEVERELY INJURED AND WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE CONTACT WAS TOLD THAT THE THROTTLE HAD ERRONEOUSLY OPENED FULLY AND WOULD NOT CLOSE, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO ACCELERATE ABNORMALLY. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 20,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 SUBARU IMPREZA WRX. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN DEPRESSING THE CLUTCH, THE BRAKE PEDAL WOULD MOVE OVER AN INCH. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE THEY ADVISED HIM THAT THE BRACKET FOR THE BRAKE AND CLUTCH PEDALS WERE FRACTURED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND THEY OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 65,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.
WHEN DRIVEN ON DRY PAVEMENT THE CAR BEHAVES NORMALLY. HOWEVER, WHEN THE CAR IS DRIVEN ON HARD PACKED SNOW OR WET PAVEMENT THE REAR END OF THE CAR WOBBLES VIOLENTLY FROM SIDE TO SIDE, MAKING IT HIGHLY UNSTABLE. THIS PROBLEM OCCURS AT RELATIVELY SLOW SPEEDS (BELOW 50 MPH). THIS PROBLEM INCREASES WHEN THE CAR IS SUBJECT TO LOADS SUCH AS ADDITIONAL PASSENGERS OR CARGO. SIMILAR COMPLAINTS HAVE REFERRED TO THE PROBLEM AS "GHOST WALKING". *TR
VEHICLE STARTED WITH A NOISE IN THE CLUTCH PEDAL. WENT AWAY WITH LUBRICANT. THEN BEGAN TO MAKE A CLICKING SOUND AND THE CLUTCH AND BRAKE BOTH STARTED TO MOVE AS I DEPRESSED THE CLUTCH . THE SHIFTING OF GEARS BECAME DIFFICULT FROM THE START OF REVERSE OR FIRST GEAR. THEN IT BE CAME REAL LOOSE I HAD A MECHANIC LOOK INTO IT AND MENTIONED THAT A WELD HAS BROKEN AND DID NOT RECOMMEND HIM FIX BUT TO HAVE THE DEALER TAKE A LOOK AT IT BECAUSE ITS A SAFETY ISSUE AND IF IT BREAKS COMPLETELY THAT IT MAY CAUSE THE CAR TO BE UNABLE TO STOP . SO I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND MENTIONED IT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. BUT THEY WILL LOOK AT IT. CURRENTLY THEY MENTIONED THEY CANNOT FIX IT UNDER WARRANTY SO CURRENTLY I CANNOT AFFORD TO GET IT RESOLVED SO IM UNABLE TO DRIVE THE CAR. *TR
VEHICLE BEGAN SMOKING ON COLD START UP. COMPRESSION TEST WAS PERFORMED AND CYL 4 RESULTED IN ~50-70 PSI, WHICH IS LESS THAN HALF THE SUBARU SPECIFICATION. SHORTBOCK HAD TO BE REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY AT APPROX 20,000 MILES. NO ROOT CAUSE FOR THE FAILURE WAS DETERMINED. *TT
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
I BOUGHT MY CAR USED, 38 MONTHS OLD AND 33,000 MILES, AND NOTICED THE CLUTCH WAS VERY HARD TO PRESS DOWN. I THOUGHT SINCE ITS A PERFORMANCE DRIVEN CAR, THAT'S JUST THE WAY IT WAS. AFTER DRIVING FOR ABOUT 3000 MILES I WAS SHIFTING FROM 1ST TO 2ND AND WHEN I PRESSED IN THE CLUTCH THERE WAS A LOUD POP. THE THROWOUT BEARING SEIZED AND COMPLETELY DISABLED THE CLUTCH ASSEMBLY. I WAS TOLD THAT THE THROWOUT BEARING WASN'T SLIDING ALL THE WAY OUT SO THE CLUTCH WAS ALWAYS SOMEWHAT ENGAGED AND THIS IS WHAT CAUSED THE FAILURE. THEY SAID EVERYTHING NEEDED TO BE REPLACED; THROWOUT BEARING, CLUTCH PLATE, PRESSURE PLATE, AND FLYWHEEL. *TR
ON THE MORNING OF NOVEMBER 4, 2011 , I PULLED INTO THE PARKING AREA BEHIND A MIDDLE SCHOOL AND MY CAR WOULD NOT STOP. I APPLIED MY BRAKES, THE CAR STILL CONTINUED TO GO FORWARD OVER THE CEMENT BUMPER AND INTO THE BUILDING. THE ONLY THING TO STOP MY CAR WAS PULLING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. I WENT TWO FEET INTO THE MIDDLE SCHOOL BUILDING. THE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE CAR AND THE BUILDING RECEIVED EXTENSIVE DAMAGE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 SUBARU IMPREZA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT ANOTHER VEHICLE CAME ACROSS THREE LANES OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC AND CAUSED A CRASH. THE OTHER VEHICLE CRASHED INTO THE FRONT OF THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE AND THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE DRIVER SUSTAINED MAJOR INJURIES. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND STATED THAT THE IMPACT DID NOT MEET THE SPECIFICATIONS THAT WOULD WARRANT AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 8,000.
THE PEDAL ASSEMBLY OF MY VEHICLE HAS DISCONNECTED FROM MY FIREWALL DUE TO FAULTY WELDS. MY CLUTCH AND BRAKE PEDALS NOW HAVE AN UNSAFE AMOUNT OF PLAY AND IS CAUSING ISSUES WITH BRAKING AND DISENGAGING MY CLUTCH. SUBARU OF AMERICA REFUSED TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM WITH MY CAR. *TR
WELDS ON CLUTCH PEDAL ASSEMBLY FAILED CAUSING POOR CLUTCH FEEL AND EXCESSIVE NOISE. THERE ARE SEVERAL SPOT WELDS ON THE ASSEMBLY THE CLUTCH PEDAL MOUNTS TO WHICH ATTACH IT TO THE FIREWALL. SOME OF THESE WELDS BROKE AND NOW GIVE THE CAR AN UNUSUAL FEELING RESPONSE TO THE PRESSING OF THE CLUTCH. IN ADDITION THERE IS NOW EXCESSIVE NOISE FROM THE CLUTCH ASSEMBLY THAT IS PERSISTENT. WITH SOME OF THE WELDS NO LONGER FUNCTIONING THE CLUTCH ASSEMBLY IS NO LONGER ADEQUATELY SECURED TO THE FIREWALL AND THERE IS A RISK THE REMAINING WELDS COULD BREAK. THIS WOULD CAUSE COMPLETE CLUTCH FAILURE POSSIBLY DURING USE ON THE ROAD. WITH A SUB-PAR CONNECTION TO THE FIREWALL NOW THERE IS NOTICEABLE BENDING AND FLEXING OF THE FIREWALL INSIDE THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT NEAR THE CLUTCH CYLINDER AND THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER. THE FLEXING OF THE FIREWALL COULD EVENTUALLY IMPACT THE ABILITY OF THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER TO PERFORMANCE AT TOP PERFORMANCE OR POSSIBLY FAIL. *TR
LOUD GROANING NOISE COMING FROM CLUTCH PEDAL EACH TIME PEDAL IS DEPRESSED TO SHIFT THE CAR. ON CLOSER INSPECTION OF THE NOISE COME TO FIND OUT THAT THE ENTIRE (CLUTCH AND BRAKE) PEDAL ASSEMBLY IS FLEXING AND THE FIREWALL OF THE CAR IS DEFLECTING EACH TIME THE PEDAL IS ACTUATED. LOOKING AT HOW THE PEDAL ASSEMBLY IS ATTACHED TO THE VEHICLE BELIEVE THAT WITH ENOUGH CYCLES THE PEDAL ASSEMBLY COULD BECOME DISPLACED DUE TO FAILURE OF THE PEDAL ASSEMBLY. WHILE MY VEHICLE HAS HIGH MILEAGE THIS IS DUE TO LONG DISTANCE TRAVEL FOR WORK. AN OWNER LIVING IN AN URBAN AREA MAY HAVE A HIGHER DUTY CYCLE WITH THE PEDALS AND EXPERIENCE ISSUES SOONER.
ENGINE STARTED KNOCKING. SET UP AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE DEALER FOR THE NEXT DAY. ON THE WAY TO THE DEALER THE KNOCKING GOT WORSE AND THE ENGINE STARTED SQUEALING AND LOSING POWER. ENGINE SEIZED UP AND WOULD NOT START AGAIN. THE ENGINE HAD TO BE REPLACED WITH A NEW ONE. *TR
2008 SUBARU IMPREZA. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO STEERING RACK FAILURE ISSUES *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE HAD ABOUT 47,500 MILES WHEN THE STEERING SUDDENLY BECAME TIGHT AND MADE A HORRIBLE NOISE. THE STEERING RACK WAS REPLACED AT A COST OF $1400. *JB
BROKEN SPOT WELDS ON REAR HATCH OPENING. *KB
THIS CAR IS A LEMON. I PREVIOUSLY OWNED 2 SUBARUS (BOTH USED), THAT I HAD VIRTUALLY ZERO PROBLEMS WITH, THEN BOUGHT THIS NEW FROM APPLE SUBARU IN YORK, PA. IT HAS EXPERIENCED PROBLEMS BEFORE IT EVEN HIT 50,000 MILES. THE TRANNY THEY REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY; BUT IT TOOK THEM 3 WEEKS TO DO SO, AND ONLY COMPLETED JOB WHEN THEY NEEDED THE LOANER CAR BACK WITHIN 24 HOURS. LESS THAN 6,000 MILES LATER, ON CHRISTMAS EVE, THE CLUTCH THROW OUT BEARING FAILED, I HAD TO PAY FOR TOWING TO AND FROM THE DEALERSHIP. THEY CALLED ON12/26, AND INFORMED ME THAT IT WOULD NOT BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY ( EVEN THOUGH THEY EASILY COULD HAVE RUSHED THE TRANNY JOB AND CAUSED THIS), THAT IT WAS A "WEAR POINT." WHEN I HEARD $1700, ASKED TO SPEAK WITH THE SERVICE MGR., WHO INFERRED THAT I WAS IGNORANT, AND HUNG UP ON ME! I HAVE NEVER REPLACED A CLUTCH IN NEARLY 40 YEARS OF DRIVING MANUAL TRANSMISSION AUTOS. MOTOR NOW TAPS AT 69,000 MI.; NEEDS REPLACEMENT BECAUSE ONE OF THE CONNECTING RODS IS BENT, AND I AM BEGINNING TO LOSE OIL. BECAUSE OF THIS, I AM GOING TO TAKE A 50-75% REDUCTION ON THE SALE/TRADE VALUE OF THIS HAUNTED VEHICLE. I AM THE THIRD FAMILY MEMBER THAT SUBARU HAS SCREWED, SURE HOPE THEY TREAT THEIR OTHER LOYAL , DECADES-LONG CUSTOMERS BETTER THAN THEY HAVE TREATED US. *TR
THE CAR WAS SMOKING ON COLD STARTS ONLY. PISTON # 4 RINGLAND CRACKED AT 33,000 MILES ON THE CAR. SHORTBLOCK HAD TO BE REPLACED. *KB
THE DRIVER SIDE VISOR FAILED TO REMAIN IN POSITION. AFTER HITTING A SMALL BUMP THE VISOR FLIPPED DOWN FROM IT'S POSITION AGAINST THE ROOF TO A COMPLETELY VERTICAL POSITION BLOCKING MY VIEW OF THE ROAD. I AM ONLY 5 FOOT 7 INCHES, BUT WHEN THE VISOR IS COMPLETELY DOWN MY VISION IS COMPLETELY BLOCKED. THE VISOR WOULD NO LONGER REMAIN UP AGAINST THE ROOF, NOR FULLY FORWARD AGAINST THE WINDSHIELD. I HAD TO PULL OVER AND REMOVE THE SCREWS HOLDING THE VISOR MOUNT TO THE ROOF. WHEN I DID THIS THE SHAFT THAT CONNECTS THE VISOR TO THE ROOF MOUNT CAME OUT OF THE VISOR. THE PLASTIC PORTION HAD BROKEN COMPLETELY INSIDE THE VISOR. THE FORCE HOLDING THE VISOR IN THE UP POSITION HAD BEEN GETTING PROGRESSIVELY WEAKER FOR MORE THAN A YEAR BEFORE IT FAILED COMPLETELY. SEARCHING THE WEB IT APPEARS THIS IS A COMMON COMPLAINT. THIS CAUSED THE CAR TO PRODUCE A WHITE SMOKE CLOUD ON START UP. BEFORE I PURCHASED THIS CAR SUBARU ISSUED A STOP SALE ON ALL 2008 WRX'S. THE CAR WAS REPAIRED AT A LOCAL DEALERSHIP UNDER A GOODWILL REPAIR. TO WHICH I WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR PART OF THE COST. THIS REPAIR WAS CONDUCTED IN MAR 2010. SINCE THEN THE CAR HAS BEEN OPERATING VERY WELL UNTIL RECENTLY TO WHICH THE ENGINE HAS DEVELOPED A KNOCK. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP TO DETERMINE WHAT THE ISSUE WAS. THE DEALERSHIP CONTACTED ME THE NEXT DAY TO INFORM ME THAT THE ROD BEARING ON CYL #4 HAD FAILED. THIS IS THE SAME ISSUE THAT PROMPTED SUBARU TO PLACE A STOP SALE ON THE VEHICLES. DURING THE INITIAL STOP SALE THEY HAD A RANGE OF VIN'S THAT COULD HAVE BEEN AFFECTED, MINE WAS NOT IN THAT LIST. I THINK SUBARU HAD MIS-CALCULATED THE NUMBER OF CARS THAT WERE AFFECTED ON THIS STOP SALE. 3. MY CAR IS CURRENTLY AT THE DEALERSHIP AWAITING A RE-MANUFACTURED ENGINE, TO WHICH I HAVE TO DISAGREE WITH. I PURCHASED THIS CAR NEW WITH NO RE-MANUFACTURED ON IT FROM THE FACTORY. MADE IT TO 106,000 MILES ON THE ORIGINAL CLUTCH, HAD IT REPLACED AS ROUTINE MAINTENANCE WITH THE GOAL OF THE SOUND GOING AWAY. THE SOUND AND CLICKING CONTINUED, YET THE CAR CONTINUED TO DRIVE NORMALLY. AT THE TIME OF CLUTCH REPLACEMENT, THE ENTIRE PEDAL ASSEMBLY MOVED AS ONE UNIT WHEN DEPRESSING THE CLUTCH - THIS CONTINUED TO BE AN UNDIAGNOSED PROBLEM (YET THE CAR CONTINUED TO DRIVE NORMALLY). BROUGHT CAR TO DEALERSHIP FOR ROUTINE MAINTENANCE, AGAIN COMPLAINED ABOUT THE NOISE - WAS INFORMED ABOUT THE FIREWALL WELD ISSUE BEING THE CAUSE FOR THE NOISE. FIREWALL WELDS WERE REPLACED WITHOUT COST TO ME. UPON PICKING UP THE CAR, THE SQUEAKING AND CLICKING NOISE WAS STILL PRESENT. UPON INSPECTION UNDER THE STEERING COLUMN / DASH, IT WAS NOTED THAT A CONNECTING BAR (CLUTCH / BRAKE) WAS FRACTURED AND FLEXES UPON DEPRESSION OF THE CLUTCH. ESTIMATED COST OF REPAIR IS ABOUT $1000. IN FEBRUARY 2010, I PURCHASED A 2008 SUBARU IMPREZA STI FROM A SUBARU DEALERSHIP WITH FACTORY WARRANTY AND I PURCHASED AN EXTENDED FACTORY WARRANTY. AFTER MULTIPLE TIMES OF BRING THE CAR IN FOR REPAIR THE DEALERSHIP COULD NOT FIGURE OUT THE PROBLEM. BUT I BEING VERY CAR SOCIAL ON THE INTERNET I FOUND THAT MANY AND I MEAN MANY PEOPLE WERE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE WITH THE ACCELERATION OF THE VEHICLE AND SOME HAD COME TO FIND OUT THAT THERE MOTORS PISTONS "RINGLANDS" WERE CRACKED AND THE CYLINDER WAS LOSING COMPRESSION. AFTER MULTIPLE SERVICES AS EXPLAINED BEFORE SUBARU FINALLY FOUND THAT MY MOTOR ALSO HAD A "RINGLAND" FAILURE! THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE BOTTOM END OF THE MOTOR AND I RECEIVED MY CAR BACK. IT RAN GREAT I KNEW THAT'S HOW IT SHOULD HAVE FELT IN THE FIRST PLACE.BUT NOW AROUND 3000 MILES LATER THE SAME ISSUE IS BACK AGAIN! IT IS MY WORRY THAT I GO TO PULL OUT OF A SIDE ROAD EXPECTING THE CAR TO BE ABLE TO MAKE IT OUT, AND I GO, BUT THE CAR IS BOGGING DOWN AND IS STRUGGLING TO GET UP TO SPEED AND THE OTHER CAR HAS TO JAM ON THERE BREAKS OR THEY END OF REAR ENDING ME CAUSING AN EVEN BIGGER PROBLEM.THE SAME COULD BE SAID FOR EXIT ENTRANCES ONTO HIGHWAYS. AFTER RESEARCHING ON THE INTERNET I COME TO FIND OUT THAT THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN PLAGUING SUBARU OWNERS FOR YEARS NOW AND SUBARU HAS DONE NOTHING TO FIX THIS ISSUE. BETWEEN THE TIME THE ENGINE COMES OFF HIGH IDLE (AFTER BEING STARTED COLD) AND WHEN IT IS COMPLETELY WARMED UP, THE ENGINE WILL DROP ITS RPM TO 0 CAUSING AN ENGINE STALL WHEN THE CLUTCH IS DEPRESSED IN ORDER TO CHANGE GEARS. THIS RECENTLY HAPPENED WHEN ENTERING A ROUNDABOUT WHEN I WAS GOING TO SHIFT DOWN FROM 3RD TO 2ND GEAR. AT THIS POINT I ONLY HAVE MY LEFT HAND ON THE STEERING WHEEL AND RIGHT ON THE SHIFT LEVER. THE ENGINE STALLS AND I LOOSE POWER STEERING. POWER BRAKING ALSO SEEMS DECREASED AS I WAS UNABLE TO PREVENT THE CAR FROM RUNNING INTO THE CENTRAL ISLAND OF THE ROUNDABOUT. THIS HAPPENS CONSISTENTLY IN COLD WEATHER. DEALERSHIP HAS TRIED REPAIRS, BUT IS UNABLE TO FIND ANYTHING WRONG (3 SEPARATE ADMISSIONS FOR SERVICE FOR THIS PROBLEM OVER LAST 9 MONTHS). COMPUTER ERROR CODES RETURNED WERE 301,302,303,304. AS OF TODAY THE CAR IS AT THE LOCAL SUBARU DEALER FOR THE SECOND DAY THIS EPISODE. *JB

ALSO SOMETIMES THE HILL START ASSIST AND ABS LIGHT COME ON RENDERING THOSE UNAVAILABLE AS WELL. MAKING THE VEHICLE NOT AS SECURED AS ADVERTISED. IT STARTED IN 2010 TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY JUST ERASED THE CODES, BUT THE PROBLEM CONTINUED, STILL HAPPENING TODAY.

I BOUGHT USED 11/2009 WITH APPROXIMATELY 27,000 MILES. THE CLUTCH WAS ALWAYS VERY STIFF WHICH I ASSUMED WAS NORMAL. SHORTLY AFTER PURCHASE I BEGAN TO NOTICE A SQUEAK WHEN I DEPRESSED THE CLUTCH. THE SQUEAK WAS FAIRLY INTERMITTENT BUT BECAME PROGRESSIVELY WORSE FOR A TIME AND THEN TURNED INTO A CLICKING NOISE. IT WAS FREQUENT ENOUGH TO BE ANNOYING BUT I JUST ASSUMED THE CLUTCH ASSEMBLY WAS SQUEAKY AND THERE WAS NO OTHER PROBLEM. OVER THE LAST FEW MONTHS I HAVE BEEN HAVING MORE AND MORE DIFFICULTY ENGAGING THE CLUTCH AND ASSUMED THAT I NEEDED A NEW ONE. I TOOK THE CAR INTO A MECHANIC TO REPLACE THE CLUTCH BUT WAS TURNED AWAY BECAUSE OF WHAT HE FOUND: WHEN THE CLUTCH PEDAL IS DEPRESSED, IT, ALONG WITH THE BRAKE PEDAL, MOVE TO THE LEFT AND FORWARD. FURTHERMORE, THE SLAVE CYLINDER INSIDE THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT MOVES OUT AND UP WHEN THE CLUTCH PEDAL IS DEPRESSED. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH ONLINE I HAVE FOUND THAT THIS IS NOT AN UNCOMMON PROBLEM FOR THE SUBARU CLUTCH ASSEMBLY, THOUGH NO RECALL HAS BE INITIATED. WHAT HAPPENS IS THAT THE WELDS ON THE FIREWALL BREAK, CAUSING THE ABNORMAL MOVEMENT OF THE CLUTCH AND BRAKE PEDALS AND EVEN A WARPING OF THE FIREWALL, NOT ALLOWING THE CLUTCH TO DISENGAGE. *JB
