I DID NOT GIVE PERMISSION FOR TESLA OWNERS TO DRIVE AT ME IN THEIR 3 TON HIGH PERFORMANCE CAR WHILE THE BUG RIDDEN AUTOPILOT IS IN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. I COULDN'T STAND THE NEW NAG HAPPY 8.0. AND TO ADDRESS ALL THE OTHER POSTS IN THIS THREAD, IT'S COMPLETELY SAFE. THE NAGS DON'T ACTUALLY NEED YOU TO GUIDE THE WHEEL, THEY'RE JUST MAKING SURE YOU'RE PAYING ATTENTION, WHICH I AM. I JUST FIND THE NAGS TO BE MORE DISTRACTING AND BEING COMPLETELY HANDS FREE IS A BETTER DRIVING EXPERIENCE FOR ME. MORE RELAXED = LESS FATIGUE AND MORE ATTENTIVE FOR LONG ROAD TRIPS. NOW I CAN GO 100+ MILES WITHOUT HAVING TO TOUCH THE WHEEL ON ROUTES THAT WOULD'VE OTHERWISE NAGGED ME 30 TIMES, AND AP WAS FLAWLESS WITH NO INTERVENTION. IT ACTUALLY LET ME GAIN A TON OF CONFIDENCE IN HOW WELL THE LATEST AP CAN PERFORM. I'M STILL PAYING ATTENTION IF I NEED TO TAKE OVER, BUT IT'S WAY BETTER THIS WAY, AND IT'S THE EXPERIENCE I PAID FOR WHEN I GOT THE CAR. *TR
I HAVE THREE ISSUES REGARDING VISIBILITY FOR SAFE DRIVING: 1) A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO THE COMPUTER SYSTEM OF THE CAR EXPERIENCED A SOFTWARE CRASH. AS A RESULT THE SIDE MIRRORS DID NOT OPEN AND THE REAR VIEW CAMERA DID NOT WORK. THE CAR WAS STILL DRIVE-ABLE I NEEDED TO TAKE MY SON TO SCHOOL SO DIDN'T HAVE TIME TO TROUBLESHOOT THIS. THIS WAS VERY UNSAFE TO DRIVE, PARTICULARLY ON THE FREEWAY, AND I BELIEVE IT IS ILLEGAL IN CALIFORNIA TO DRIVE WITHOUT WORKING MIRRORS. I CONTACTED TESLA ABOUT THIS AND THEY DID NOT OFFER ANY SPECIFICS. I BELIEVE THIS IS A MAJOR ISSUE. OPERATIONAL MIRRORS ARE ESSENTIAL EQUIPMENT, I THINK IT IS BAD DESIGN THAT THESE ARE DEPENDENT ON THE SAME SYSTEM AS THE ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM. TESLA'S PLAN TO REPLACE SIDE MIRRORS WITH VIDEO CAMERAS IS WORRISOME IN THIS REGARD. 2) THE RADIO CONTROL BUTTONS FOR CHANGING THE STATION ON THE STEERING WHEEL NO LONGER WORK. I BELIEVE THIS IS THE RESULT OF A SOFTWARE UPGRADE BY TESLA. TO CHANGE THE STATION NOW REQUIRES DIVERTING ATTENTION FROM THE ROAD TO A TOUCH SCREEN. I HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THIS TO TESLA AND THEY HAVE REPLIED WITH ANY MATERIAL EXPLANATION. 3) WHEN THE CAR IS IN REVERSE THE BACKUP CAMERA CAN BE BLOCKED ON THE DISPLAY BY OTHER ACTIVITY. THIS IS A PROBLEM IN THAT A PASSENGER CAN INADVERTENTLY TURN OFF THE CAMERA DISPLAY WHILE CAR IS IN REVERSE MOTION. A SECOND ISSUE IS THAT THE BACKUP CAMERA WILL OCCASIONALLY DISPLAY IN SOME SORT OF SPLIT SCREEN MORE. IT LOOKS LIKE THEY ARE TRYING TO DISPLAY BOTH A WIDE ANGLE VIEW AND NARROW VIEW. THIS ONLY HAPPENS RANDOMLY (MAYBE ANOTHER SOFTWARE ISSUE) BUT IT DOES DIMINISH THE USEFULNESS OF THE CAMERA. I HAVE NOT CONTACTED TESLA FOR THESE ISSUES CONCERNING THE REAR CAMERA.
THIS IS ANOTHER COMPLAINT ABOUT THE TESLA AUTOPILOT. OWNERS ARE COMPLAINING ON THE FORUMS THAT THE NEW UPGRADE VERSION 8.0 HAS MADE THINGS EVEN MORE DANGEROUS. ALL BETS ARE OFF WHAT AP IS GOING TO DO WHEN YOU CREST A HILL, SO A FIRM GRIP ON THE WHEEL TO MAKE SURE AP DOES NOT DO SOMETHING SILLY IS REQUIRED WHEN CRESTING A HILL. 2) THERE IS A USE CASE WHICH IS QUITE DANGEROUS. WHEN YOU APPROACH STOPPED TRAFFIC DIRECTLY AHEAD THE RADAR 'SEES' THE STOPPED TRAFFIC, IDENTIFIES THE STOPPED TRAFFIC AS A TARGET, AND BRAKES SENSIBLY. EVERY TIME SO FAR. HOWEVER, WHEN THE ROAD IS CURVED AND THE STOPPED TRAFFIC IS NOT DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF THE CAR (BUT IS OFF TO THE RIGHT OR THE LEFT) THEN THE AP DOES NOT ACQUIRE THE STOPPED TRAFFIC AS A TARGET, AND DOES NOT BRAKE. YOU HAD BETTER BE PREPARED TO MANUALLY BRAKE HARD IN THIS CIRCUMSTANCE. MINE HASN'T IMPROVED. IT STILL WANDERS ACROSS CLEAR LINES INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC. THE LINES ARE INDICATED ON THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER IN BLUE AND THE CAR IS SHOWN STRADDLING THE LINE. IT'S LIKE THE AP HAS GIVEN UP BUT HASN'T WARNED ME. I HAD THE AP SET FOR 50 MPH AND A CAR PULLED OUT AND STOPPED ACROSS MY LANE ABOUT 800 FT AHEAD. AP SHOWED NO SIGNS OF SLOWING, AND AT ABOUT 150 FT I HAD TO COME TO A HARD STOP MANUALLY TO AVOID A COLISION. FUNNY I WAS GOING TO START A NEW THREAD ABOUT HOW AP IS TOO SCARY TO USE IN 8.0. GUESS I'M NOT ALONE. BOTH BRAKING AND STEERING. IF I COULD GO BACK SEVERAL REVISIONS, I WOULD. I DON'T FEEL LIKE USING IT ALMOST ANYWHERE ANYMORE. TTHE CAR BRAKES TOO HARD AND TOO FAR AWAY FROM CARS AHEAD TURNING RIGHT - EVEN WHEN THERE'S A TURN LANE. I'M ALWAYS AFRAID THAT SOMEONE IS GOING TO REAR-END ME WHEN THIS HAPPENS
In 2016, approximately 18 months after purchasing my Tesla Model S, I was driving to work and brushed a curb on a tight city street. Upon arriving at my office parking garage, as I was parking and turning the steering wheel sharply to park in a space, my front right wheel fell off and the axle completely sheared off. Tesla blamed the incident on my curbing the wheel, which only caused light damage. However, more and more reports have come out recently (including this article: [XXX] ) which suggests that Tesla has known defects they are denying and blaming on customers. Not only did this cost me money out of pocket (more than just my deductible), but my insurer had to pay the full amount. Tesla admitted no fault and made me & insurance pay the full amount. I have multiple photos, but the Upload feature on this site is NOT working so I am unable to upload them but can provide them later as needed. I WAS DRIVING MY CAR TO WORK AND ACCIDENTALLY SCRAPED THE FRONT RIGHT WHEEL ON A CURB NEAR A ROUNDABOUT ON AN OLD/NARROW SEATTLE STREET (THERE WAS ONCOMING TRAFFIC AND PARKED CARS SO I HAD VERY LITTLE ROOM ON MY RIGHT AND MIS-JUDGED). THE PAINT ON THE WHEEL WAS PRETTY BADLY SCRAPED UP BUT OTHERWISE THE CAR WAS FINE (NO BODY DAMAGE) AND THE WHEEL HAD NO VISUAL STRUCTURAL DAMAGE (THE CAR'S ALIGNMENT WAS NOT AFFECTED). I CONTINUED DRIVING TO WORK WITHOUT ISSUE, INCLUDING 5-6 MILES ON THE HIGHWAY AT 60MPH. WHEN PARKING IN THE UNDERGROUND GARAGE AT MY OFFICE 20 MINUTES AFTER THE CURB INCIDENT, I TURNED THE WHEEL TO THE LEFT TO ADJUST MY CAR IN THE PARKING SPOT AND HEARD/FELT A RUBBING SOUND, FOLLOWED BY A LOUD CLUNK. THE FRONT RIGHT OF THE CAR DROPPED AND THE WHEEL FELL OFF THE SUSPENSION AND WAS WEDGED UNDER THE FRONT OF THE CAR. THE CAR WAS DISABLED AND HAD TO BE TOWED TO TESLA. GIVEN THE AMOUNT OF FORCE APPLIED TO THE WHEEL BY THE CURB AND THE LACK OF OTHER SYMPTOMS, IT SEEMS UNLIKELY THAT ANY NORMAL, STOCK SUSPENSION SHOULD FAIL AS IT DID WITH THIS CAR. IT APPEARS A BOLT ON THE LOWER CONTROL ARM SHEARED OFF COMPLETELY WHEN I WAS PARKING (AND HAD PROBABLY BEEN FATIGUED BY THE CURBING INCIDENT).
DRIVING DOWN THE FREEWAY AT MAXIMUM SPEED LIMIT (65) NEEDED TO REMOVE WALLET FROM BACK POCKET. UNBUCKLED SEAT BELT WHY STILL MOVING AT MAXIMUM SPEED LIMIT. UPON UNBUCKLING SEAT BELT ENGINE IMMEDIATE SHUT OFF AND VEHICLE CAME TO INVOLUNTARY STOP WITHIN APPROXIMATELY 5 SECONDS. FORTUNATELY, THE VEHICLE FOLLOWING WAS ALERT AND STOPPED IN TIME TO AVOID SERIOUS REAR END ACCIDENT. VERY CONCERNING IF THIS OCCURS AND OWNERS ARE NOT NOTIFIED OF THE DANGER WE EXPERIENCED.

THE NHTSA TENDS TO WORK WITH MANUFACTURES THEY GIVE THE MANUFACTURE A CHANCE TO COMPLY WITH WHAT THEY "RECOMMEND" WITHOUT OFFICIALLY ORDERING THEM TO DO ANYTHING. US CORPORATIONS HATE REGULATION, AND TEND TO BEND OVER BACKWARDS TO AVOID IT. IN THE US YOU CAN'T EVEN WATCH A VIAGRA COMMERCIAL WITHOUT PART OF THE AD BEING DEDICATED TO SAYING THAT IT WON'T PREVENT STD'S. LIKE HOW IN THE WORLD WOULD I EVEN GET IT IN MY MIND THAT IT WOULD? GREEN1 ALBERTA, CANADA NEW IF YOU WANT THE ADDED HOLD WHEEL NAGS, FEEL FREE TO INSTALL THE DOWNGRADE. THERE IS NOTHING STOPPING YOU FROM DOING SO. I'M JUST POINTING OUT THAT I DON'T HAVE TO. AND THAT TESLA HAS NO LEGAL ABILITY TO FORCE ME TO DO SO. THEY ARE FREE TO CHANGE THE WAY THINGS WORK FOR NEW OWNERS, BUT THEY HAVE NO LEGAL ABILITY TO MAKE ANY CHANGES WHATSOEVER TO SOMEONE ELSE'S PROPERTY WITHOUT THAT PERSON'S EXPRESS CONSENT. IN FACT THAT IS ALMOST GUARANTEED TO BE THE WHOLE REASON WHY YOU HAVE TO ACCEPT SOFTWARE UPDATES MANUALLY. THEY HAVE THE ABILITY TO PUSH THEM AUTOMATICALLY, BUT THEIR LAWYERS PROBABLY DIDN'T WANT TO DEAL WITH THE LEGAL FALLOUT OF THAT ONE, THIS WAY THEY CAN SHOW YOU CONSENTED. THERE HAS NEVER, IN THE ENTIRE HISTORY OF AUTOMOTIVE TRANSPORT, BEEN EVEN A SINGLE TIME WHEN THE GOVERNMENT HAS FORCED OWNERS TO COMPLY WITH AN OFFICIAL RECALL, THEY CERTAINLY WON'T BE FORCING IT FOR SOMETHING THAT THEY WON'T EVEN GO ON RECORD AS HAVING REQUIRED. I DROVE THE CAR INTO A PARKING SPACE AT THE SCHOOL (DESERT CHRISTIAN ELEMENTARY) IN TUCSON ARIZONA ON SEPT 16TH ABOUT 11:05 AM, WHEN THE CAR ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN (UNINTENDED ACCELERATION) AND CRASHED INTO 2 PARKED VEHICLES AND AIRBAGS DEPLOYED AND I SUSTAINED A FRACTURE OF MY RIGHT ARM REQUIRING SURGERY. ALSO MY CAR (THE TESLA MODEL S) WAS DAMAGED AND THE TWO OTHER PARKED CARS.

THE WHEEL LINER IS SHREDDED. THERE IS NO IMPACT DAMAGE FORWARD OF THE WHEEL THAT WOULD ACCOUNT FOR THE DAMAGE. TESLA SUSPENSIONS ARE FAILING IN A VARIETY OF WAYS WHICH SUGGESTS THAT THE DESIGN, MANUFACTURE, AND TESTING ARE INADEQUATE AND PRESENT A HAZARD TO THE PUBLIC. PLEASE INVESTIGATE.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2015 TESLA MODEL S. WHILE DRIVING 70 MPH WITH THE AUTO PILOT ENGAGED, THE AUTO PILOT STEERED THE VEHICLE TO THE LEFT. AS A RESULT, THE VEHICLE CRASHED INTO A METAL DIVIDER. THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED AND THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 13,000.
MY TESLA MODEL S - 2015 - HAD THE LEFT FRONT SUSPENSION MALFUNCTION. TESLA CLAIMS IT WAS DAMAGED - ALTHOUGH THE CAR HAS ONLY BEEN DRIVEN 12000 MILES - AND ONLY ON CITY STREETS AND HIGHWAYS. THERE HAS BEEN NO OFF ROADING AND HAZARDOUS ROAD CONDITIONS. THE CAR WAS LEFT UNABLE TO BE DRIVEN. THE TESLA DEALER REFUSES TO DISCUSS THE MATTER - SIMPLY SAYING THAT THIS IS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY AND INSISTING I FILE AN INSURANCE CLAIM. I HAVE ASKED TO SPEAK TO A SUPERVISOR - AND CAN NOT GET A REPLY FROM THEM. I HAVE CALLED TESLA HEAD OFFICE - AND THEY REFERRED ME BACK TO THE LOCAL DEAL - AND ASSURED ME THEY WOULD FOLLOW UP AND THEY HAVE NOT. FURTHER MORE - THE REPLACEMENT PARTS HAVE BEEN ON ORDER AND ARE TAKING AN EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF TIME. I AM CONCERNED - AFTER RESEARCHING THIS - THAT THE TESLA AIR SUSPENSION MAY BE FAULTY - AND MY IN FACT BE HAZARDOUS WHEN DRIVING.

I AM ONLY PLAYING AMATEUR CRASH INVESTIGATOR BECAUSE I BELIEVE THAT MOST OF THESE CRASHES WOULD NOT ATTRACT THE ATTENTION OF OFFICIAL INVESTIGATORS BUT WOULD BE HANDLED AS ROUTINE TRAFFIC INCIDENTS BY LOCAL POLICE WHO MIGHT NOT NOTICE THE PATTERN OF FAILURES. I BELIEVE THAT THE TESLA SITUATION IS UNIQUE. THERE IS A CULTURE OF DENIAL AND COVER UP BY THE COMPANY AND BY OWNERS.THERE ARE NO INDEPENDENT DEALERSHIPS THAT COULD REPORT PROBLEMS. EX-EMPLOYEES REPORT A DICTATORIAL WORK ENVIRONMENT THAT DISCOURAGES REPORTING OF PROBLEMS. EVEN ON THE TESLA INTERNET FORUMS OWNERS THAT SPEAK ABOUT DEFECTS ARE ABUSED AND INTIMIDATED AND ACCUSED OF MAKING FALSE REPORTS IN ORDER TO DRIVE DOWN THE SHARE PRICE. PLEASE INSPECT SOME OF THESE CRASHED CARS AND ALSO SOME RANDOM SAMPLES OF THE FLEET FOR PROBLEMS IN THE SUSPENSION AND FOR SEIZED BRAKE CALIPERS AS PREVIOUSLY REPORTED. THE STEEL BUMPER BAR FORWARD OF THE WHEEL IS COMPLETELY UNDAMAGED WHICH MAKES IT UNLIKELY THAT THE WHEEL WAS STRUCK FROM THE FRONT. IT IS QUITE POSSIBLE THAT ALL OF THE DAMAGE CAUSED TO THE FRONT END IS SIMPLY THE RESULT OF THE SUSPENSION FAILURE. THERE ARE FAR TOO MANY OF THESE FAILURES IN PROPORTION TO THE SMALL NUMBER OF TESLAS THAT HAVE BEEN SOLD. THIS SPECIFIC SCENARIO WAS ON A HAS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES AND I HAVE MADE TESLA AWARE OF THE DEFECT/BUG.
