AUTOPILOT SUDDENLY SWERVED VEHICLE OUT OF THE LANE TO THE LEFT TOWARD A BRIDGE ABUTMENT. I HAD TO YANK CONTROL AWAY FROM AUTOPILOT TO RECENTER VEHICLE IN THE LANE. I PROVIDED A DETAILED WRITTEN DESCRIPTION OF THE INCIDENT ALONG WITH THE TIME OF THE RECORDED "BUG REPORT" TO TESLA'S SERVICE CENTER. TESLA WROTE THE PROBLEM IN THE REPAIR ORDER AS "CUSTOMER CONCERN - AUTO PILOT IS INCONSISTENT" RATHER THAN THE MORE ACCURATE AND MORE SERIOUS DESCRIPTION I PROVIDED IN WRITING TO THEM. TESLA'S FINAL PAPERWORK SAID SYSTEM IS "OPERATING AS DESIGNED." A LANE KEEPING SYSTEM SHOULD BE DESIGNED TO KEEP A VEHICLE WITHIN A LANE, A LANE KEEPING SYSTEM SHOULDN'T SUDDENLY STEER THE VEHICLE OUT OF THE LANE. THE WAY AUTOPILOT SUDDENLY SWERVES OUT OF THE LANE SHOULD NOT BE CONSIDERED NORMAL. THIS PROBLEM HAS OCCURED MULTIPLE TIMES.
THIS A COMPLAINT ABOUT THE TESLA AUTOPILOT. HE ALSO FIDDLES WITH THE CENTRE SCREEN AND EVEN USES A HAND HELD MOBILE PHONE. THE IRRESPONSIBLE MARKETING OF THIS AUTOPILOT BY TESLA AND THE CLAIMS OF "40% SAFER THAN A HUMAN DRIVER" HAVE CAUSED OWNERS TO HAVE MISPLACED CONFIDENCE IN THE AUTOPILOT. DRIVERS OF ONCOMING VEHICLES AND OTHER ROAD-USERS DID NOT GIVE PERMISSION FOR THIS DANGEROUS EXPERIMENT. IN EVERY CASE WHERE THERE HAS BEEN A FATAL CRASH TESLA HAVE CLAIMED THAT AUTOPILOT WAS NOT RESPONSIBLE. THIS CLAIM MAKES IT EVEN MORE PROBABLE THAT OWNERS WILL DRIVE HANDS FREE AND TRUST IN THE HIGHLY DANGEROUS SO CALLED AUTOPILOT. PLEASE TAKE ACTION.

SHE ENCOURAGES THE PASSENGERS TO BELIEVE THAT THIS IS SAFE AND THAT IT IS ONLY NECESSARY TO SQUEEZE THE WHEEL OCCASIONALLY TO KEEP THE AUTOPILOT HAPPY. HERE IS YET ANOTHER INSTANCE OF A TESLA SUSPENSION FAILURE. PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS MAJOR DEFECT. I LIKE READING THE FORUMS AND HAVE BEEN A VERY HAPPY OWNER. HOWEVER, I WAS DRIVING HOME WITH MY WIFE FROM CHURCH THIS MORNING AND THE CAR HAD A POTENTIALLY LIFE THREATENING FAILURE. I BEGAN NOTICING A "THUD" TYPE SOUND ON NORMAL ROAD BUMPS ON MY DRIVE HOME, AND WHEN I SLOWED TURNING INTO MY DEVELOPMENT AND PRESSED ON THE BRAKES TO SLOW DOWN THE CAR, IT BEGAN MAKING A SHRILL SOUND AND THE CAR BEGAN JUMPING UP AND DOWN. I PULLED OVER AND NOTICED THAT IT LOOKS LIKE SOMETHING COMPLETELY FELL OFF THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE AXEL OR TURNING APPARATUS (I'M NOT VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT CAR PARTS!) HAS ANYONE ELSE EXPERIENCED THIS? I AM HOPING THIS IS AN ANOMALY AS I REALLY LOVE MY TESLA, BUT IF THIS WOULD HAVE HAPPENED ON THE HIGHWAY OR ON AUTOPILOT I CAN'T IMAGINE THINGS ENDING WELL FOR ME AND MY FAMILY. A BRAKE FAILURE WAS EXPERIENCED AT ROUGHLY 4 PM PDT ON JULY 3, 2017. I HAD TO SWERVE INTO THE MEDIAN TO PREVENT REAR ENDING THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME WHILE TRAVELING AT ROUGHLY 30MPH. ON THE SCREEN IN THE VEHICLE A WARNING WAS DISPLAYED "AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING DISABLED.." I PULLED INTO A BUSINESS PARK PARKING LOT AND IN ORDER TO STOP THERE WAS A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF BRAKE PRESSURE REQUIRED TO BRING THE VEHICLE TO A STOP. THE CAR WAS PARKED AND SUBSEQUENTLY TOWED TO MY HOME. ABOUT 5 DAYS LATER THE TESLA SERVICE CENTER IN RENO TOWED THE CAR FOR SERVICE. WE ARE AWAITING THE RESULTS.

THIS SIDE OF THE CAR DID NOT HIT THE POLE AND IS UNDAMAGED APART FROM THE COLLAPSED SUSPENSION. THERE HAVE BEEN DOZENS OF SIMILAR INCIDENTS IN WHICH THE TESLA SUSPENSION HAS COLLAPSED. THERE ARE NO BUMP STOPS ON THE TESLA SUSPENSION AND A SIMPLE AIR LEAK CAN CAUSE A DISASTER. THIS INCIDENT COULD EASILY HAVE CAUSED A FATALITY. PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS INCIDENT. THANK YOU. THIS IS ANOTHER COMPLAINT ABOUT THE TESLA AUTOPILOT. HERE IS A VIDEO OF AN OWNER USING AUTOPILOT HANDS FREE AT HIGH SPEED ON A FREEWAY AND INCHES AWAY FROM MANY ONCOMING CARS ON AN UNDIVIDED ROAD. THIS IS JUST ONE OF MANY VIDEOS SHOWING OWNERS DRIVING IN DANGEROUS WAYS. I BELIEVE THAT THESE OWNERS HAVE BEEN DUPED INTO HAVING MISPLACED CONFIDENCE IN THE AUTOPILOT AND THAT THE SITUATION HAS BEEN MADE WORSE BY TESLA USING NHTSA APPARENT ENDORSEMENT OF THE AUTOPILOT. NHTSA HAS STATED THAT TESLA AUTOPILOT IS 40% SAFER THAN A HUMAN DRIVER BASED ON THE NUMBER OF INCIDENTS WHICH RESULTED IN AIR-BAG DEPLOYMENT ACCORDING TO DATA SUPPLIED BY TESLA. THE PUBLICATION OF THIS FINDING HAS CAUSED OWNERS TO HAVE HIGH CONFIDENCE IN THE AUTOPILOT. MIGHT I POLITELY ASK - WHAT IS THE SAMPLE SIZE? IF THE SAMPLE SIZE WAS FOR EXAMPLE 100 AIR-BAG DEPLOYMENTS THEN THAT IS A RATHER LARGE NUMBER OF CRASHES IN PROPORTION TO THE NUMBER OF CARS ON THE ROAD. IT IS ALSO FAR TOO LOW A SAMPLE TO PROVIDE STATISTICALLY RELIABLE RESULTS. WHENEVER A CRASH OCCURS TESLA CLAIMS THAT THE AUTOPILOT WAS NOT ENGAGED AT THE TIME. THIS IS PROBABLY TRUE BECAUSE THE AUTOPILOT WILL DISENGAGE IF THE OWNER TOUCHES THE WHEEL OR THE BRAKE IN THE INSTANT BEFORE IMPACT. AT 3:20 IN THE VIDEO YOU CAN SEE THE OWNER GRAB THE WHEEL AFTER THE AUTOPILOT CROSSES DOUBLE LINES. PLEASE TAKE ACTION TO PREVENT FURTHER LOSS OF LIFE.
INTERMITTENT WINDSHIELD WIPERS MAY FAIL. HAS HAPPENED TWICE, VIDEO CAPTURED FOR SECOND EVENT. HEADLIGHTS HAVE TURNED OFF ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS WHILE DRIVING IN DARK. MOST RECENT EVENT WAS CAPTURED ON DASHCAM, AS WELL AS IPHONE VIDEO, WITH MULTIPLE TEST SCENARIOS (TURNING THEM FROM AUTO TO ON, AND BACK AGAIN. REBOOTING COMPUTER INTERFACE, ETC). THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS, AND COULD CAUSE SERIOUS HARM OR DEATH. I HAD MY WHEEL TURNED AND I PUT THE CAR IN PARK, THEN I SWIPED MY CARD TO GET INTO MY PARKING GARAGE. OWNERS HAVE MISPLACED CONFIDENCE IN AUTOPILOT AND REGARD THE INSTRUCTION TO KEEP HANDS ON THE WHEEL AS MERE LEGAL BOILERPLATE. REPEATED CLAIMS THAT AUTOPILOT IS 40% SAFER THAN A HUMAN DRIVER MAKE MATTERS EVEN WORSE. WHEN A CRASH DOES OCCUR TESLA WILL CLAIM THAT THE CAR WAS NOT ON AUTOPILOT. THIS IS A COMPLAINT ABOUT THE POWER ASSISTED STEERING IN THE TESLA MODEL S AND IT ALSO APPLIES TO THE MODEL X. THERE HAVE BEEN MULTIPLE REPORTS ON THE TESLA FORUMS OF OWNERS HAVING A FAILURE PF THE POWER ASSISTANCE CAUSED BY A BROKEN WIRE OR LOOSE CONNECTION. WE WERE DRIVING TESLA S NORTHBOUND ON HIGHWAY 101 GOING FROM NOVATO TO PETALUMA, WE WERE ON AUTO STEERING WHEN THE DRIVER (MY SON) SAW THE CAR MERGING STRAIT ON US, HE TRIED TO AVOID THE ACCIDENT AND SWUNG TO THE LEFT, BUT BECAUSE IT WAS ON AUTO STEERING THE STEERING WHEEL WAS BLOCKED/STIFF AND AT FIRST HE WAS NOT ABLE TO MOVE IT. IT TOOK HIM COUPLE OF SECONDS TO REALIZE IT. IN ORDER TO OVERRIDE THE AUTO STEERING HE HAD TO USE FORCE TO SWING LEFT BUT ONES THE AUTO STEERING WAS OVERRIDDEN WE SWUNG TO THE LEFT SUDDENLY ALMOST HITTING THE DIVIDER/WALL BETWEEN HIGHWAY'S BOUNDS, THEN HE SWUNG TO THE RIGHT TO AVOID THE WALL, SO WE FOUND OURSELVES SWINGING THROUGH 2 LANES AND SHOULDER LEFT AND RIGHT, GOOD OTHER CARS SLOWED DOWN WITNESSING THE ACCIDENT SO WE DID NOT HIT ANY OTHER CAR, CANNOT DRIVE THE CAR DUE TO SOME REAR WHEEL DAMAGE. THOUGH I INDICATED TODAY'S DATE FOR THE EVENT, HAS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES (AT LEAST 15) SINCE I TOOK DELIVERY OF THE CAR IN SEPTEMBER. I WOULD SAY ON AVERAGE IT OCCURS APPROX 1X PER WEEK, WHEN MANY SYSTEMS FAIL AND I GET MULTIPLE WARNINGS SCROLLING ACROSS THE DASH, FOLLOWED BY "CAR NEEDS SERVICE." THESE INCLUDE "ABS NEEDS SERVICE", "TIRE PRESSURE SYSTEM DISABLED", "STABILITY CONTROL DISABLED" "TRACTION CONTROL DISABLED" "PARK ASSIST DISABLED" "REGENERATIVE BRAKING DISABLED" "AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING DISABLED" "CONTACT TESLA SERVICE." IN ADDITION THE STEERING IS LESS RESPONSIVE. FURTHERMORE, TODAY FOR THE FIRST TIME THE "DRIVE SELECTOR STICK" THAT SELECTS DRIVE, PARK, REVERSE, NEUTRAL WAS UNRESPONSIVE WHEN STARTING. THEN WENT IN TO NEUTRAL. FINALLY AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS IT WENT IN TO REVERSE. THIS MOST FREQUENTLY HAPPENS WHEN STARTING THE CAR, BUT SOMETIMES OCCURS WHEN IN MOTION DRIVING, AT UNPREDICTABLE TIMES. THEY HAVE HAD THE CAR IN TO SERVICE A COUPLE TIMES. MOST RECENTLY THEY HAD THE CAR FROM NOVEMBER 26TH UNTIL JANUARY 2ND, AND ASSURED ME THAT THEY CORRECTED THE PROBLEM 100%. WHICH THEY DID NOT. *TR
I WAS STOPPED AT A STOP LIGHT ON MY WAY TO WORK AROUND 8AM ON A VERY CROWDED CITY STREET. AS THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN, I SLOWLY PRESSED ON THE GAS TO MOVE FORWARD AND THE CAR TOOK OFF AT TOP SPEED. I HIT THE BRAKE BUT THE CAR DID NOT RESPOND - IT DID NOT SLOW DOWN OR STOP, NOR DID ANY ALARM, EITHER VISUAL OR AUDITORY, GO OFF INSIDE THE CAR. TO HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME AND THEN HAD TO SWERVE TO AVOID HITTING DOZENS OF CARS IN MY PATH. I GRAZED PAST A LAMP POST, ANOTHER CAR AND FINALLY CRASHED INTO A TREE.

IT IS HARDLY SURPRISING THAT THE BOLTS (WELDED TOGETHER IN THE BALL JOINT STEM) ULTIMATELY SNAP OFF. THE FRONT LH WHEEL HAS BEEN SLICED COMPLETELY IN HALF WHICH INDICATES IT WAS GOUGED BY A BROKEN SUSPENSION PART WHILST STILL ROTATING. THE HOOD OF THE CAR IS ALMOST UNDAMAGED WHICH SHOWS THAT ALL OF THE DAMAGE COULD NOT HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY A HEAVY IMPACT. EVEN THE BACK WHEELS ARE GOUGED AND DAMAGED BY THE SUSPENSION COLLAPSE. THE NUMBER OF TESLAS WITH BROKEN SUSPENSIONS SHOWING UP IN SALVAGE YARDS IS ENORMOUS ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING HOW FEW OF THEM ARE ON THE ROADS. PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS PROBLEM.

HERE IS A TESLA IN THE JUNKYARD. IT IS IN IMMACULATE CONDITION EXCEPT FOR THE FACT THAT THE BACK LH WHEEL HAS GONE WHOMPY. THE WHEEL AND TIRE ARE UNDAMAGED AND IT SEEMS IMPOSSIBLE THAT THE CAR COULD HAVE HAD AN IMPACT THAT WOULD BREAK THE SUSPENSION WITHOUT EVEN BREAKING A SPOKE OF THE WHEEL.
