I HAVE PURCHASED IT. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THERE ARE NOT ANY RECALLS OR TBS'S ON THE 4RUNNER FOR THAT PROBLEM. TODAY(2/24/10) I FIND ONLINE A TBS FOR THE PROBLEM THAT I HAVE. I CALLED A DEALER AND HE SAID THAT SINCE I HAVE OVER 80K ON THE TRUCK, THAT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR IT. THIS IS NOT FAIR AND I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR IT. YOUR PEOPLE HAVE TOLD ME SEVERAL TIMES THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THAT COULD BE DONE ABOUT THE SMELL. FROM WHAT I HAVE READ ONLINE THERE ARE SEVERAL OTHERS IN THE SAME SITUATION THAT I AM IN. TSB NO. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA 4RUNNER. WHILE DRIVING ANY SPEED, THE BRAKE PEDAL AND THE VEHICLE VIBRATE AND PULSATE WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL IS DEPRESSED. THE DEALER HAS NOT INSPECTED THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT REPLACED THE BRAKE PADS, HOWEVER, THE PROBLEM CONTINUES TO PERSIST. THE CURRENT MILEAGE IS 65,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000.
ALMOST CONSTANT SULPHER SMELL. DEALER STATES THAT THEY HAVE NO KNOWLEDGE OF PROBLEM, AND NO TSB'S. THEY TELL ME TO KEEP REAR WINDOW CLOSED. WHEN MY WIFE IS A PASSENGER SHE HAS HER EYES BURNING ALL THE TIME. IF YOU NEED TO STEP HARD ON THE GAS THE WHOLE CABIN FILLS AND IS ENOUGH TO MAKE YOU NOXIOUS. TOYOTA NEEDS TO REMEDY THE PROBLEM ASAP, OR A CLASS ACTION SUIT SHOULD BE FILED. THIS PROBLEM HAS SOURED ME ON TOYOTA PRODUCTS FOR GOOD. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 15 MPH ON NORMAL ROAD CONDITIONS; PROCEEDING TO A STOP SIGNAL PRESSURE WAS APPLIED TO THE BRAKE PEDAL, FOLLOWED BY AN UNINTENDED AND FORCEFUL ACCELERATION. THE DRIVER WAS ABLE TO COME TO A COMPLETE STOP. THE FAILURE OCCURRED INTERMITTENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR INSPECTION. THE TECHNICIAN WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 111,000. UPDATED 02/18/10
WINDSHIELD CONTINUE TO CRACK STARTING EACH TIME MID WAY THE WIND SHIELD WIPER ON DRIVER SIDE. I AM MY THIRD WINDSHIELD AND IT IS CRACKED AGAIN ALSO LOTS OF TUNDRA TRUCKS ARE CRACKING THE SAME IDENTICAL PLACE. *NM
DT: ONTACT STATES THE DRIVER'S LUMBART SECTION OF THE SEAT IS LOOSE. WHEN YDRIVING AND STOPPING Y CAN FEEL THE FRONT SECTION OF THE SEAT MOVING. AND WHEN TURNING LEFT OR RIGHT CAN FEEL THE SEAT MOVING. THIS HAPPENS ALL OF THE TIME. HE HAS TAKEN IT TO THE DEALERSHIP TWICE AND BOTH TIMES THEY SAID IT IS WORKED AS DESIGNED. HE NOTICED THIS ON 6-30-05. THE DEALERSHIP DID COMPARE THE PROBLEM TO A 2005 TOYOTA FORERUNNER AND SAID THE SAME PROBLEM WAS HAPPENING WITH THE 2005 MODELS BUT THEY COULD NOT DO ANYTHING UNTIL TOYOTA COMES OUT WITH A SERVICE BULLETING OR A RECALL. HE HAS TALKED TO TOYOTA AND THEY GAVE HIM A CLAIM NUMBER AND SAID SOMEONE SHOULD GET BACK WITH HIM ON OR AROUND THE 21ST. OF JULY 05.*AK

UPON ACCELERATION THE EXHAUST EMITS A VERY STRONG ROTTEN EGG SMELL INTO THE CABIN OF THE VEHICLE. THIS ESPECIALLY HAPPENS WHEN THE REAR WINDOW IS LOWERED.
AFTER PICKING MY CAR UP FROM THE DEALERSHIP FROM AN OIL CHANGE LAST OCTOBER, MY VEHICLE STABILTY CONTROL (VSC) SYSTEM ZEROED THE CALIBRATIONS IN EFFECT SHUTTING THIS SYSTEM DOWN. AS A RESULT, THE CAR WENT INTO A SIDEWAYS SKID AND NEARLY ROLLED. I HAD TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP WHO RECALIBRATED THE SYSTEM AND ACCUSED MY OF INDUCING THE SKID AND INFORMED ME THE SYSTEM IF SUPPOSE TO TURN OFF IF A TIRE STARTS TO SPIN FASTER THAN ANOTHER. IN MAY, AFTER PICKING THE CAR UP FROM ANOTHER OIL CHANGE AT THE DEALERSHIP, THE VSC SYSTEM AGAIN ZEROED THE CALIBRATION WHILE BEING DRIVEN FROM THE SERVICE BAY TO THE FRONT. THIS TIME FOR KNOW KNOWN REASON. THE DEALERSHIP AND TOYOTA TECHNICAL SUPPORT HAVE TOLD ME TO TAKE THE CAR, DRIVE IT AND "SEE WHAT HAPPENS". THIS SEEMS TO BE OCCURRING ON A 13,000 MILE FREQUENCY AND WHEN THE SYSTEM DOES TURN OFF, THE CAR IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE. MY CAR HAS BEEN AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR 9 DAYS NOW.
INVOLVED IN ACCIDENT,AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY,SEAT BELTS DID NOT HOLD RESULTING IN HITTING STEARING WHEEL AND FRACTURING MY STEARNUM. COLLISION REPAIR CENTER REPLACED COMPUTER THAT CONTROLS AIR BAG AND SEAT BELTS.
DRIVER'S DOOR WILL NOT OPEN. DOOR LOCKED IN LOCK POSITION, WILL NOT UNLOCK USING THE KEY OR MANUAL SWITCH INSIDE OF VEHICLE. UNABLE TO EXIT DRIVER'S DOOR. TOOK VEHICLE TO TOYOTA DEALER, AWAITING WORD ON REPAIR. *AK
FRAME RUSTING BADLY, ESPECIALLY THE LOWER FRONT RADIATOR SUPPORTS. PAINT CLEAR COAT HAS FAILED. RUST AROUND THE FRONT WINDSHIELD AREA. THE COATING ON THE ALLOY WHEELS STARTED FALLING OFF WITHIN ONE YEAR OF PURCHASE. THE VEHICLE HAS 125000 MILES I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER AND LIVED IN THE NEW ENGLAND AREA FOR 15 YEARS, 3 YEARS IN FLORIDA.
I AM THE OWNER OF A 2004 TOYOTA 4-RUNNER SE, THE DRIVER'S SEAT IS CONSTANTLY CLICKING AND SHIFTING UPON ACCELERATION, BRAKING AND TURNING. THE TECHNICIAN'S AT THE DEALER SAY IT IS OPERATING AS DESIGNED AND THEY ALL DO IT. THE CAR HAS 7500 MILES ON IT AND HAS BEEN TO THE DEALER 2 TIMES FOR THE SAME AND IT IS GOING BACK AGAIN FOR IT ON 5/27/05. I FEEL IF IT MOVING THIS MUCH WITH SUCH LOW MILEAGE WHAT WILL IT BE DOING IT A COUPLE OF YEARS FROM NOW. I FEEL IT IS DANGEROUS BECAUSE SOMETIME THE SEAT WILL ACTUALLY MOVE BACK A NOTCH WHILE ACCELERATING AND ALMOST CAUSE ME TO LOOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE WHILE STEERING AROUND A CAR THAT HAD PULLED OUT IN FRONT OF ME. AS FOR THE ROTTEN EGG SMELL I ALSO GET THAT WHEN THE WINDOWS ARE OPEN MOSTLY AND IT IS VERY ANNOYING AS IS THE DRONNING OF THE DRIVETRAIN OR DIFFERENTIAL UPON ACCELERATION, THAT I HOPE WILL BE ADDRESSED AT THE NEXT SERVICE DATE ABOVE. I THINK TOYOTA SHOULD BE ABLE TO REPAIR A LOOSE SEAT IT IS RIDICULOUS WITH ALL THE TECHNOLOGY OUT THEIR THAT THERE IS NO REPAIR FOR SUCH A SIMPLE PROBLEM.

I HAVE BEEN TO THE DEALER 5 TIMES AND ALL THEY SEEM TO DO IS CHECK THE SPARE TIRE AND RESET THE WARNING LIGHT AFTER THE DIAGNOSTIC. AFTER 1 DAY THE WARNING LIGHT COMES BACK ON. ON ANOTHER TOYOTA 4RUNNER I TEST DROVE I NOTICED THE SAME BLINKING TIRE PRESSURE SENSOR WARNING LIGHT.
PURCHASED BRAND NEW 2003 TOYOTA 4 RUNNER 4X4..ON SNOW,ICE AN WET ROADS THE FRONT END VIBRATES AN BUCKS. ITS BEEN BACK TO THE DEALER TWICE, AN TWICE WERE TOLD THE TRUCK CHECKS OUT FINE(OF COURSE THEY ARE GOING TO SAY THAT, BECAUSE THIS PROBLEM ONLY OCCURS IN WEATHER MENTIONED ABOVE) AN THEY HAVE NOT TEST DRIVEN IT IN SUCH WEATHER. *JB

ROTORS HAVE BEEN "CUT" ALREADY WITH JUST 13K ON THE VEHICLES DUE TO RUST BUILD UP.BOCH TOYOTA IN NORWOOD MASS. TELLS ME THAT THE BRAKE ISSUE IS "NORMAL" !! THERE IS ALSO A LOUD WHINING NOISE WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES. THEY TELL ME THIS IS NORMAL ALSO ! ALSO, THE TIRES HAD TO BE REBALANCED AT 13K AS I WAS TOLD THEY WHERE "CUPPING". VIBRATION THROUGH STEERING WHEEL AT RPMS B/W 1600-2300, INCREASED WITH SPEED. *JB
STEERING WHEEL AND GAS PEDAL HIGH FREQUENCY VIBRATION WHEN ACCELERATING AT 1500 RPM TO 1800RPM (IN VARIOUS SPEED). I HAD TAKEN THIS CONCERN TO MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER. THE DEALER SERVICE WAS GOOD, BUT NO SOLUTION PROVIDED. THE REASON WAS "ALL 4 RUNNER V8 4X4 DO THIS, AND THERE IS NO TSB SOLUTION FOR IT". I HAVE SEEN COMPLAINS ABOUT THIS ANNOYING VIBRATION IN '03 AND '04 4RUNNERS IN VARIOUS PLACE - EDMUNDS.COM, THIS SITE, AND ETC. SHOULD TOYOTA CONSIDER THIS A DEFECT OF THE VEHICLE AND PROVIDE A SOLUTION?*AK
RELATES TO A 2004 TOYOTA 4RUNNER. THE TIRE PRESSURE SENSOR SYSTEM MALFUNCTIONS AND THE LIGHT BLINKS INDICATING LOW PRESSURE IN THE TIRES (BLINKING OF THE LIGHT PER THE PROVIDED MANUAL IS INDICATIVE OF LOW PRESSURE IN TIRES). TOYOTA AND ITS DEALERS REFUSE TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE ISSUE AND UNABLE TO OFFER A FIX. I HAVE HAD MY VEHICLE IN THE DEALER SHOP NOW TWICE AND INVOLVED REGIONAL TOYOTA TECHNICAL SUPPORT WITH NO RESOLUTION. EACH TIME THE SENSOR IS RESET, THE LIGHT TRIGGERS ON AFTER A FEW DAYS. LIKELY A FAILURE OF THE EITHER THE TIRE SENSOR OR THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE. BY ADMISSION OF THE DEALER MULTIPLE VEHICLES HAVE SIMILAR PROBLEMS. THE FAILURE OF THE TIRE PRESSURE SENSOR SYSTEM TENDS TO OCCUR EACH TIME AFTER DRIVING CONDITIONS THAT INVOLVE HIGHER (LEGAL) SPEEDS AND AFTER CONTINUOUS DRIVING FOR MORE THAN 30 MINUTES ON HIGHWAYS. *NM
MY TOYOTA 4 RUNNER SMELLS LIKE ROTTEN EGGS. THE DEALER TRIED TO REPLACE THE CATALITIC CONNVERTER AND IT STILL SMELLS.*AK
I BOUGHT A BRAND NEW 2004 4 RUNNER SR5 V6 IN MAY OF 2004, I HAVE NOTICED SOME VIBRATION FROM THE FRONT END WHEN DRIVING ABOVE 60MPH. I HAVE HAD THE TIRES BALANCED ALREADY 3 TIME IN THE PAST 3 MONTHS OF OWNERSHIP WITHOUT AN SUCCESS.*AK
THIS IS AN E-MAIL I SENT TOYOTA HEADQUARTERS: I HAVE HAD MY NEW 2004 4RUNNER LIMITED BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP (RON CARTER, ALVIN, TX.) 4 TIMES BEFORE I EVEN HAD 500 MILES ON THE VEHICLE. THE REASON IS BECAUSE OF STEERING WHEEL OSCILLATION/VEHICLE VIBRATIONS BETWEEN 55 AND 70 MPH. THE DEALERSHIP RE-BALANCED THE WHEELS AND TIRES THAT CAME WITH THE VEHICLE (DUNLAP GRANDTREK AT20) TWICE WITHOUT ANY LUCK. I THEN HAD THEM UPGRADE THE TIRES (FOR AND ADDITIONAL $420) TO MICHELIN TIRES. THIS DIDN'T SOLVE THE PROBLEM EITHER. I THEN BROUGHT VEHICLE BACK IN ONE MORE TIME THE FOLLOWING MONDAY FOR ANOTHER ATTEMPT TO FIX THE PROBLEM. NO LUCK AGAIN. ALL OF THIS TOOK PLACE WITHIN 7 DAYS OF ME TAKING OWNERSHIP OF THE VEHICLE. EVERY TIME I TOOK IT IN FOR THIS INVESTIGATION, THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT TOLD ME THAT THE PROBLEM WAS FIXED (ALL 4 TIMES). IT WAS NOT FIXED! I HAD THE TECHNICIAN WHO BALANCED THE TIRES (HIS NAME WAS TRACY) DRIVE THE VEHICLE AND HE TOO NOTICED THE STEERING WHEEL OSCILLATION/SHIMMY. ONE OF THE SERVICE ADVISORS (HER NAME WAS KIM) ALSO DROVE THE VEHICLE AFTER A DIFFERENT ATTEMPT TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM AND NOTICED THE SAME CONCERN. 9/8/04 I'M STILL WAITING ON THE TOYOTA REGIONAL OFFICE TO CONTACT ME BACK LIKE THEY PROMISED TO GET THIS PROBLEM RESOLVED. I REALLY LIKE THIS VEHICLE AND WOULD LIKE TO GET THIS PROBLEM FIXED. I'M NOT SURE WHAT TO DO NEXT (LEMON LAW?). I AM WRITING TOYOTA TO SEE WHAT ELSE CAN BE DONE TO SOLVE THIS ISSUE THAT THE DEALERSHIP COULD NOT. STEERING WHEEL VIBRATES AROUND 45-60 MPH. IT IS A PRONOUNCED VIBRATION THAT IS UNCOMFORTABLE TO DRIVE WITH.
RESONANCE THROUGH STEERING WHEEL DURING LIGHT TO HEAVY ACCELERATION WHEN TRANS WAS SHIFTING. DEALER, AT THIS TIME SAYS IT IS A CHARACTERISTIC OF THIS VEHICLE. 1000'S RPMS AND UP SOMETIMES WORSE THEN OTHERS. *JB
DASH LIGHTS ARE ON ALL THE TIME MAKING IT HARD TO KNOW IF YOU HEADLIGHTS ARE ON OR NOT. HAVE DRIVEN SEVERAL TIMES AT NIGHT IN LIGHTED AREAS THINKING MY HEADLIGHTS WERE ON WHEN INDEED THEY WERE NOT. *NM

I HAVE A 2004 TOYOTA 4 RUNNER AND I TOOK IT IN WHEN IT WAS NEW FOR THE FRONT DRIVER SEAT. WHERE THE SEAT CONNECTS TO THE BACK WHEN YOU STOP OR START THE HINGE OR TRACK HAS CONSIDERABLE PLAY IN IT AND YOU FEEL A CLUNK EVERY TIME. THEY REPLACED THE SEAT BUT THE PROBLEM CAME BACK. I REPEATEDLY ASK TOYOTA IF THIS PRESENTS AND DANGER IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT SINCE THERE IS SO MUCH PLAY IN THE SEAT. THEY TOLD ME THERE IS NO SAFETY CONCERN. ON SUNDAY, JULY 25, 2004, I WAS PULLING FROM A DRIVEWAY TO A TAR ROAD AND WHEN APPLYING MY BRAKES THE VEHICLE DID NOT SLOW DOWN AND MADE A VERY LOUD TICKING NOISE IN THE REAR OF THE CAR. I ASSUMED IT WAS MY ABS SYSTEM MAKING THE NOISE. I WAS NOT GOING MORE THAN 2 MILES AN HOUR AND WAS ABLE TO JUST ACCELERATE AND GO ON MY WAY. I USED THE BRAKES IN MY VEHICLE AT LEAST 5-10 TIMES ON MY WAY HOME. I PULLED IN MY DRIVEWAY AND PARKED MY VEHICLE. APPROXIMATELY 6 HOURS LATER, MY HUSBAND GOT INTO THE VEHICLE TO MOVE IT IN THE DRIVEWAY ABOUT 10 YARDS FORWARD. I WAS IN THE HOUSE. IN THE HOUSE I HEARD THAT VERY SAME TICKING NOISE AND THEN A LOUD NOISE AND I KNEW THAT MY HUSBAND HAD CRASHED MY CAR. THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT RIGHT TO THE FLOOR AND THE CAR SMASHED THRU OUR GARAGE. I GOT INTO THE VEHICLE AND PRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL AND IT AGAIN WENT RIGHT TO THE FLOOR. I CALLED MY TOYOTA DEALERSHIP THE NEXT MORNING AND THEY AGREED TO COME PICK IT UP. BEFORE THE CAR LEFT THE YARD MY FATHER IN -LAW CAME OVER AND WATCHED THE BRAKE PEDAL GO TO THE FLOOR. TOYOTA CAN FIND NOTHING WRONG WITH MY VEHICLE AND WANT ME TO TAKE IT BACK AND DRIVE IT. MY 2004 TOYOTA V8 4WD SR5 4RUNNER WAS BOUGHT BRAND NEW IN FEB/2004. AT SPEED 71-73 MPH, IT GENERATES ANNOYING HARMONIC HUMMING NOISE FROM TRANSMISSION AND/OR DRIVELINE. THE NOISE IS MORE NOTICEABLE IN COLD WEATHER THAN IN HOT ONE. IT BECOME LESS NOTICEABLE AT SPEED ABOVE 78 MPH. A TOYOTA DEALER MECHANIC TEST DROVE THE CAR AND CONFIRMED THE NOISE, BUT OFFERED NO HELP TO FIX THE PROBLEM BECAUSE THEY DO NOT KNOW HOW TO. *AK
PURCHASED TOYOTA 4 RUNNER V8 SPORT EDITION IN MAY 2004. AFTER APPROXIMATELY 2,000 MILES, THE CAR BEGAN HAVE ALMOST CONSTANT SULFUR EMISSIONS (HEAVY SMELL) WITHIN THE CAR WITH WINDOWS EITHER UP OR DOWN, AND WITH EITHER FRESH AIR OR RECIRCULATED AIR. THE ODOR IS NOXIOUS AND EXACERBATING HEALTH PROBLEMS. DEALERSHIP (CONICELLI) TOLD ME THIS SMELL WAS NORMAL AND UNAVOIDABLE. I HAVE A 2004 TOYOTA 4 RUNNER. I NOTICED THE EXTREME SULFUR ODOR WITHIN THE FIRST 500 MILES OF DRIVING THE VEHICLE. I WAS TOLD IT WAS JUST A COATING ON THE ENGINE. NAIVE AS I AM I BELIEVED THEM. LOW TIRE PRESSURE INDICATOR LIGHT COMES ON AND BLINKS AFTER VEHICLE HAS BEEN TRAVELLING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS FOR EXTENDED PERIODS OF TIME. USUALLY OCCURS AFTER DRIVING FOR AN HOUR OR MORE. DEALER REPORTS THAT NO TIRE PROBLEMS FOUND AND RESETS INDICATOR. INDICATOR MUST BE RESET BY DEALER, OR IT WILL CONTINUE ITS ANNOYING BLINKING.*AK

LEFT SIDE MANIFOLD CATALYTIC CONVERTER ASSEMBLY, ONE MANIFOLD STUD BROKEN, TECHNICIAN DRILLED AND REMOVED STUD THEN RETAPPED HOLE. NEW STUD INSTALLED. C/S VSC LIGHT ON ENGINE LIGHT ON, CATALYTIC INEFFICIENCY. CONVERTERS CHANGED OUT. REPLACED CATALYTIC CONVERTERS. A C/S VSC LIGHT LIT, YAW SENSOR OUT OF TOLERANCE, RECALIBRATED YAW SENSOR. *JB
1. 2004 TOYOTA 4RUNNER PURCHASED FROM FRED ANDERSON TOYOTA, 9101 GLENWOOD AVENUE, RALEIGH, NC,27622 ON 3/18/2004. ON 3/29, THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT INSTALLED AN ELECTROCHRMIC MIRROR THAT HAD BEEN ORDERED AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE. 2. AFTER THAT I NOTICED THAT THE ENGINE WARNING LIGHTS, THE VSC TRAC AND VSC OFF LIGHT CAME ON IN THE DASH. ALSO NOTICED AN AMMONIA SMELL. 3. I TOOK THE VEHICLE IN 4 TIMES FOR EACH PROBLEM, FOR A TOTAL OF 6 TIMES. THE FIRST TIME 4/15, THE PROBLEM WAS DIAGNOSED AS THE PURGE VALVE AND IT WAS REPLACED. THE SECOND TIME 4/29, THE CHARCOAL CANNISTER WAS DIGANOSED AS THE PROBLEM, BUT THE PART HAD TO BE ORDERED. THE THIRD TIME 5/6, , THE CHARCOAL CANNISTER WAS REPLACED. THE FOURTH TIME, 5/24, IT WAS FOUND THAT THE ELECTROCHROMIC MIRROR WAS INSTALLED INCORRECTLY. THE LIGHTS HAVE SINCE GONE OFF, BUT THE AMMONIA SMELL STILL OCCURS INTERMITTENLTY DURING ACCELERATION. I AM CURRENTLY IN ARBITRATION BECAUSE TOYOTA HAS BEEN LESS THAN WILLING TO COOPERATE WITH ME. I'M ALSO WONDERING WHAT PERMANENT DAMAGE HAS BEEN CAUSED TO THE VEHICLE. ADDITIONALLY I HAVE ALSO NOTICED A VIBRATION IN THE STEERING AND NOTED IT AT THE LAST TWO VISITS TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT. *MR

VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION, AND MECHANIC DETERMINED THAT THE MIRROR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, AND REPLACED IT THREE TIMES. HOWEVER, THE PROBLEM RECURRED.
