TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA AVALON. WHILE DRIVING SPEEDS OVER 45 MPH, THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD SHAKE AND VIBRATE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE VEHICLE NEEDED A WHEEL ALIGNMENT. THE WHEEL ALIGNMENT WAS PERFORMED BUT THE FAILURE CONTINUED TO OCCUR. THE CONTACT INDICATED THAT LATER, WHEN STARTING THE VEHICLE THE STEERING WHEEL WAS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO TURN IN EITHER DIRECTION. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER, WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE FAILURE WAS DUE TO AN INTERNAL LEAK IN THE RACK AND PINION. NO FURTHER INFORMATION WAS AVAILABLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE SRS WARNING LIGHT PREVIOUSLY ILLUMINATED INTERMITTENTLY. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED HEAD AND MOUTH INJURIES THAT REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE AIR BAG WARNING INDICATOR OF MY CAR LIGHTS UP ON A REGULAR BASIS. THE VEHICLE OWNER'S MANUAL STATES CLEARLY THAT IF THIS HAPPENS, THE VEHICLE MUST BE TAKEN TO A TOYOTA DEALER FOR SERVICE. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER, AND THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE INFORMED ME THAT THEY COULD SOLVE THAT PROBLEM BY REPLACING THE AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE, OR BY CHANGING THE CABLE THAT CONNECTS THE MODULE TO THE ACCOMPANYING AIR BAG DEVICES. BECAUSE THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT DIDN'T HAVE A REPLACEMENT CONTROL MODULE AVAILABLE, THEY REPLACED ONLY THE CONNECTING CABLE. AFTER THE VISIT TO THE DEALER, THE AIR BAG WARNING INDICATOR DIDN'T LIGHT. HOWEVER, A FEW WEEKS LATER, THE WARNING INDICATOR BEGAN LIGHTING OCCASIONALLY, AND AS TIME PASSED, THE INDICATOR AGAIN BEGAN LIGHTING REGULARLY. WHEN I CALLED THE TOYOTA DEALER TO REPORT THIS CONDITION, THE DEALER TOLD ME TO CALL TOYOTA DIRECTLY FOR MORE INFORMATION. THE REPRESENTATIVE AT TOYOTA SAID THAT THEY HAD ISSUES A RECALL NOTICE, BUT A SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM WASN'T AVAILABLE, AND THEY WOULD NOTIFY ME WHEN IT BECAME AVAILABLE. IN THE MEANTIME, I CONTINUE TO SEE THE AIR BAG WARNING INDICATOR LAMP LIGHTING ALMOST ALL THE TIME. I AM VERY CONCERNED THAT TOYOTA IS ATTEMPTING TO AVOID THE COST OF REPLACING THE DEFECTIVE AIR BAG CONTROL MODULES, AND INSTEAD TRYING TO FIND A LESS EXPENSIVE ALTERNATIVE. I FIND THIS BEHAVIOR DANGEROUS ON THE PART OF TOYOTA AND WANT THEM TO OWN UP TO THE ISSUE AND PROVIDE A TIMELY SOLUTION TO THIS DANGEROUS SITUATION.

I TOOK MY CAR TO HERRIN-GEAR TOYOTA SCION ON WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2014 AT 6100 I-55 NORTH IN JACKSON, MS TO FIX THE RECALL NOTICE FOR THE SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE REPLACED. ON THE DRIVE HOME I NOTICED THE AIRBAG LIGHT COMING ON AND OFF SO I TOOK IT BACK TO THE THEM ON FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2014. I WAS TOLD BY [XXX] , ADVISOR IN THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT, THAT THE PART THEY HAD PUT ON WEDNESDAY WAS DEFECTIVE AND THEY WOULD HAVE TO ORDER IT AND IT WOULD BE A WEEK OR TWO BEFORE THE PART CAME IN. SO, IN THE MEANTIME, I AM STILL DRIVING MY CAR WITH THE AIRBAG ISSUE STILL NOT REPAIRED AND I DON'T KNOW DEFINITELY WHEN IT WILL BE FIXED. I HAVE CONTACTED 2 DEALERS, BOTH OF WHOM HAVE SAID THEY DON'T HAVE THE NECESSARY PARTS AND WILL CONTACT ME WHEN THEY CAN DO THE REPAIR. THE RECALL NOTICE SAYS THAT TOYOTA HAS A SUFFICIENT SUPPLY OF SUB-WIRE HARNESSES (FILTER) FOR THIS CAMPAIGN. PALM TOYOTA SAYS NO. PALM TOYOTA SUGGESTED I CALL TOYOTA CORP WHICH I DID ON MARCH 15, 2015 AND WAS ISSUED A CASE #. NO ONE CAN GIVE ME ANY IDEA OF WHEN MY CAR CAN BE FIXED FOR THE RECALL PROBLEM. *TR

I TOOK MY CAR TO HALEY TOYOTA ON HULL STREET IN RICHMOND VIRGINIA FOR THE AIR BAG RECALL....THEY SO CALL FIXED THE AIR BAG ISSUE AND THEN SAID WHEN THEY PUT THE CAR BACK TOGETHER THE AIRBAG LIGHT STAYS ON AND THEY DON'T KNOW WHERE IT WAS COMING FROM. AFTER SOME RESEARCH THEY SAID THAT IT WAS THE WIRING HARNESS THAT WAS THE PROBLEM. MY AIR BAG LIGHT WAS NEVER ON PRIOR TO ME BRINGING THEM MY CAR. THEY ARE TRYING TO CHARGE ME $1400.00 FOR REPAIRS. THE RECALL WAS FOR THE AIR BAG AND IF THE LIGHT STAYS ON THEN THEY NEED TO FIX IT. I CONTACTED TOYOTA CORPORATE OFFICE AND THEY SAID THE ONLY THING THEY CAN DO IS TO OFFER ME $500.00 TOWARD THE REPAIR BUT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY UP FRONT AND SEND IN THE DOCUMENTATION AND THEN I WOULD ONLY BE REIMBURSED THE $500. I DON'T FEEL LIKE I SHOULD HAVE TO PAY THEM ANYTHING BECAUSE I FEEL LIKE THE MECHANIC DID SOMETHING FOR THE AIR BAG LIGHT TO STAY ON. HE SAID THAT MAYBE SOME WIRES GOT CROSSED OR CONNECTORS GOT MOIST AND TRY TO PUT IT ON ME. I BROUGHT THE CAR FROM THAT DEALERSHIP AND HAVEN'T DONE ANYTHING TO THE CAR SINCE I GOT IT BUT KEEP UP THE MAINTENANCE. MY COMPLAINT HAS TO DO WITH THE AIR BAG RECALL. THE DEALER ON TWO OCCASIONS REPLACED COMPONENTS OF THE AIR BAG SYSTEM BUT HAS BEEN UNABLE TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. THE SERVICE CONSULTANT CLAIMS TO HAVE CONTACTED TOYOTA TECH PERSONNEL IN CA AND WAS TOLD, BASICALLY, "THERE'S NOTHING ELSE WE CAN DO UNDER THE RECALL." IF THE PROBLEM STILL EXISTS, I.E. THE WARNING LIGHT STILL COMES ON AND, APPARENTLY, THERE IS STILL THE RISK OF A MALFUNCTION, I FAIL TO SEE WHY FURTHER ACTION CANNOT BE TAKEN. FROM WHAT I HAVE READ AND HEARD THE CONSEQUENCES OF AN AIR BAG MALFUNCTION CAN BE FATAL. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS PREVIOUSLY INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V373000 (AIR BAGS) LAST YEAR AND REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V043000 (AIR BAGS). THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 147,000.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 12 MPH, ANOTHER VEHICLE CRASHED INTO THE REAR OF THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE CAUSING IT TO CRASH INTO THE REAR OF SECOND VEHICLE. THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE DRIVER SUSTAINED BACK, SHOULDER AND NECK INJURIES, THE FRONT SEAT PASSENGER AND REAR SEAT PASSENGER SUSTAINED UNKNOWN INJURIES WHICH ALL REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 80,000.
I WAS DRIVING ON AN EXPRESSWAY AT APX 65 MPH GOING ONTO THE OFF RAMP GOING DOWN TO 25MPH THE STEERING BECAME VERY TIGHT AND THEN AS I DROVE HOME THE STEERING WHEEL STARTED CLICKING. I CHECKED FLUIDS AT HOME AND THEY LOOKED OK. DROVE AROUND THE BLOCK AND POWER STEERING WAS GONE LEFT AND RIGHT THEN HEARD A GRINDING NOISE, IT FELT OK GOING STRAIGHT. AFTER I DROVE IT IT BECAME MORE INTERMITTENT WITH POWER COMING AND GOING ALTOGETHER. ON 8/26/15 HAD A SMALL ACCIDENT ON THE FRONT QUARTER PANEL. IT WAS AT BODY SHOP FOR 4 DAYS. I HAD ASKED THEM TO CHECK THE STEERING AND THEY SAID IT WAS THE RACK AND PINION. CALLED TOYOTA AND WAS TOLD THE RECALL IN 2010 WAS FOR A DIFFERENT STEERING ISSUE THAN THE STEERING PROBLEM THAT I MENTIONED. TOYOTA SAID THEY CANNOT HELP ME. I INFORMED THEM OF A DISABILITY I HAVE AND MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO ADJUST TO IT. TOO BAD!
THERE WAS A RECALL INITIATED 27 MARCH 2014 FOR THE SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE (ECM). TOYOTA MAILED LETTERS ON 05 MAY 2014 ADVISING OWNERS OF THE RECALL. AS OF TODAY (16 SEP 2014), TOYOTA HAS FAILED TO PROVIDE THE PARTS AND/OR FIX THE SRS ECM. AS OF TODAY, TOYOTA DOES NOT HAVE AN ESTIMATED DATE THAT THE PARTS WILL BE AVAILABLE TO REMEDY THIS RECALL #14V147. SINCE THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND THE AIRBAG COULD DEPLOY UNEXPECTEDLY AT ANY TIME, PLEASE DIRECT TOYOTA TO PROVIDE THE PARTS AND FIX THIS SAFETY ISSUE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. 6 MONTHS DELAY IS 5 MONTHS TOO LONG FOR DRIVERS TO BE PUT AT RISK BY TOYOTA'S FAILURE TO FIX THE PROBLEM. *TR

I AM WRITING YOU TO ASK TOYOTA TO FOLLOW THROUGH WITH IMPLEMENTING THIS RECALL REMEDY. AFTER RECEIVING THE INTERIM NOTICE, I HAVE BEEN PATIENTLY WAITING FOR THE "FIX" OR REMEDY. HOWEVER I HAVE BEEN STONEWALLED IN A CALL TO TOYOTA -- TOYOTA CONTINUES TO SAY "NO REMEDY IS CURRENTLY AVAILABLE" AND THAT THEY WILL "NOTIFY YOU WHEN THE REMEDY IS READY." HOW LONG WILL NHTSA ALLOW TOYOTA TO KEEP DELAYING "PREPARING THE REMEDY?" I AM DELAYING DRIVING THIS CAR UNTIL THE "REMEDY" HAS BEEN IMPLEMENTED. AFTER NOTIFYING THE DEALER, THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE PARTS NEEDED TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE WERE NOT AVAILABLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 73,000.
