TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA AVALON. THE CONTACT STATED THAT DURING A ROUTINE MAINTENANCE CHECK, THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE RACK AND PINION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 70,000.
STEERING PLACEMENT LOCK CAME LOOSE WHILE DRIVING AND STEERING COLUMN DROPPED TO LOWEST LEVEL. THIS HAS HAPPENED 3 OTHER TIMES IN CITY TRAFFIC. TRYING TO TIGHTEN THE STEERING PLACEMENT FRICTION LOCK ONLY SEEMS TO HOLD TEMPORARILY. *TR
STICKY, CRACKED, AND SHINY DASHBOARD CAUSES GLARE ON WINDSHIELD. *TR
IDLER BEARING FROZE WHICH TOOK OUT SERPENTINE BELT. LOST POWER STEERING AND COOLING AND ELECTRIC. THIS IS THE SECOND ONE I HAVE REPLACED THIS YEAR BOTH BEING OEM PARTS. *TR
I WAS STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT RIGHT OFF A HIGHWAY EXIT ON A BUSY MALL ROAD. WHEN THE LIGHT CHANGED AND I TRIED TO PRESS THE GAS PEDAL THE CAR WOULD NOT MOVE. ENGINE WAS RUNNING, EVERYTHING WAS WORKING PERFECTLY BUT CAR WOULD NOT MOVE. I TRIED TO TURN OFF AND RESTART SEVERAL TIMES TO NO AVAIL. ATTEMPTED TO SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL OR ANY OTHER GEAR AND ALTHOUGH SHIFT MOVED CAR STILL WOULD NOT RESPOND. CAR COULD NOT EVEN BE PUSHED OFF OF ROAD IN NEUTRAL. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO A MECHANIC AND SAT FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS. WHEN THE MECHANIC TURNED THE CAR ON IT PRESENTED NO ISSUES, RAN PERFECTLY FINE AND NO SIGNS OF PROBLEMS ON DIAGNOSTIC COMPUTER. THE CAR RAN PERFECTLY FOR ANOTHER WEEK OR SO UNTIL MY FATHER WAS DRIVING ON HIGHWAY AND ALL OF A SUDDEN COULD FEEL THAT CAR WAS JUST ROLLING, AND THE POWER WAS GONE. HE WAS COASTING IN HIGH SPEED LANE OF INTERSTATE. LUCKILY HE PULLED TO SAFETY. WHEN CAR WAS TOWED TO SAME MECHANIC IT WAS CLEAR THE TRANSMISSION WAS GONE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. WITH NO WARNINGS THIS METICULOUSLY MAINTAINED CAR JUST GAVE OUT AND PUT MYSELF AND MY FATHER IN VERY DANGEROUS SITUATIONS WHERE WE COULD HAVE BEEN HIT BY OTHER CARS. I HAVE READ MANY SIMILAR STORIES ONLINE FROM TOYOTA OWNERS WITH CARS BUILT WITHIN SAME TIMEFRAMES WHO HAVE HAD THEIR TRANSMISSION GIVE OUT, OR CAUSE PROBLEMS ON THE ROAD AS WELL. TOYOTA REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE THERE IS A DEFECT IN THEIR PRODUCTS AND HAS ONLY RESPONDED THAT THE CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY AND WE WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL COSTS. *TR
AT 7 YEARS OLD, MY TOYOTA AVALON IS LEAKING FROM THE BODY OF THE RACK AND PINION GEAR. DEALER SERVICE STATES THAT 'THIS HAPPENS'. CONCERNED THAT LEAK MAY CAUSE LOSS OF POWER STEERING WHILE DRIVING CAUSING DRIVER TO OVER OR UNDERSTEER THE VEHICLE. COULD BE CONSIDERED FOR A POSSIBLE SAFETY ISSUE. *TR
LEAKING TIMING COVER. SERVICE MANAGER AT JAY WOLFE TOYOTA, MO., SAY THAT 20% OF AVALONS HAVE THIS LEAK AND WILL COST ME $2,464 TO REPAIR. I MENTIONED THAT I WORKED FOR FORD MOTOR CO AND SAT IN ON THE WEEKLY SAFETY OFFICE RECALL MEETINGS. HE REPLIED, 'IT'S NOT A SAFETY ISSUE', I SAID THAT IF 20% VEHICLES HAVE A FAILURE RATE AFTER 7 YEARS, NHTSA WOULD LIKE TO BE MADE AWARE OF PROBLEM. *TR
UNEXPLAINED CRACKS IN A NUMBER OF AREAS OF DASHBOARD, WHICH HAS BEEN POLISHED AND MAINTAINED REGULARLY. HAVE HAD TOYOTA AVALONS BEFORE, 2000, 2005, AND TOYOTA CARS SINCE 1973 (CORONA, CAMRY ETC.) BUT HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED THIS TYPE DAMAGE. TOLD DEALERSHIP. THEY SAY NOT UNDER WARRANTY. TOLD IT WILL COST $5,00 TO REPAIR DO I HAVE A ANY GROUND? *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA AVALON. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS FLICKERED AND SHORTED INTERMITTENTLY ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT ONLY THE LOW BEAM BULBS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A SECOND INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE DRIVER SIDE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 147,000.
IN JUNE 2008, I BOUGHT A NEW 2007 TOYOTA AVALON AT A LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP, HARR TOYOTA AT 100 GOLD STAR BLVD, WORCESTER, MA 01606. I HAD BEEN ENJOYING DRIVING THE CAR FOR THE PAST 6 YEARS AND HAVE ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT THE NEXT VEHICLE FOR MY FAMILY WILL BE ANOTHER TOYOTA AVALON. I LIKED IT SMOOTH DRIVE, NUMBER OF FEATURES, PLENTY OF SPACE AND THE MOST THE RELIABILITY. ALL MAINTENANCE ON THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN PERFORMED AS REQUIRED AND I THOUGHT THAT AS LONG AS I TAKE GOOD CARE OF IT, I COULD DRIVE IT FOR MANY MORE YEARS. UNFORTUNATELY, ONE WEEK AGO, WHEN MY FAMILY AND I WERE TRAVELING ON THE STATE HIGHWAY, I-90, THE CARS SPEED DROPPED FROM ABOUT 67 MPH TO 0 IN A MATTER OF SECONDS. THE VEHICLE BECAME UNRESPONSIVE CAUSING ME A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF STRESS. I MUST HAVE BEEN BORN UNDER A LUCKY STAR? BECAUSE I WAS ABLE TO MOVE TO THE BREAK DOWN LANE WITHOUT CAUSING WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN A MAJOR ACCIDENT. I AM SURE THAT ANYONE THAT HAS HAD THEIR LOVED ONES AT A GREAT RISK WOULD UNDERSTAND MY FEELINGS. WE RECEIVED HELP FROM THE STATE POLICE IN TERMS OF TOWING THE CAR TO THE NEAREST TOYOTA DEALERSHIP, BERNARDI TOYOTA AT 1626 WORCESTER RD, FRAMINGHAM, MA. THE PROBLEM WITH A CAR WAS IDENTIFIED AS FAILURE OF THE TRANSMISSION SYSTEM AND THE CAR WAS REPAIRED AT A COST OF $5,100. GIVEN THE FACT THAT THE CAR HAS ONLY 57,000 MILES ON IT (MINIMAL MILEAGE WHEN COMPARE TO THE ANTICIPATED LONGEVITY AND RELIABILITY OF TOYOTA) AND ONE YEAR PAST 5-YEAR WARRANTY (2008-2014) MAKES ME EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED. DASHBOARD IS CRACKING AROUND THE AIRBAG AREA. *TR
MY 2007 AVALON NEVER HAD AN OIL PROBLEM. LAST THURSDAY I NOTICED OIL IN THE DRIVEWAY AS A SHOVELED SNOW. I CHECKED THE OIL LEVEL AND THE VEHICLE WAS 1 1/2 QUARTS DOWN. I PUT THE 1 1/2 QUARTS INTO THE CAR AND DROVE IT TO MY MECHANIC 5 MILES AWAY. THE MECHANIC SAID THAT THE VEHICLE WAS TOTALLY OUT OF OIL AND THAT I WAS VERY LUCKY THAT THE ENGINE DIDN'T CATCH ON FIRE BECAUSE THE OIL WAS SPRAYING ALL OVER THE ENGINE. THE MECHANIC DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS AN OIL LEAK FROM THE VVT-I OIL HOSE. I WENT ON LINE AND DISCOVERED THIS LIMITED SERVICE CAMPAIGN FOR VVT-I OIL LINE. I CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE. THEY STATED THAT THEY WOULD GET BACK TO ME. THEY NEVER DID. I CONTACTED TOYOTA.COM AND SPOKE TO THE REPRESENTATIVE. THEY STATED THAT THE LSC WAS FOR 07 TOYOTA AVALON'S BUT MY VIN WASN'T INCLUDE IN THE LSC, EVEN THOUGH IT WAS THE SAME PROBLEM ALL THE 07 AVALONS WERE HAVING. THIS PROBLEM IS GOING TO CAUSE MAJOR DAMAGE TO THE AVALONS. IT IS ALSO VERY DANGEROUS THE WAY THE OIL LEAKS ALL OVER THE ENGINE. THERE IS GOING TO BE A LARGE NUMBER OF ENGINE FIRES. TOYOTA BASICALLY TOLD ME TO BAD AND GOOD LUCK. I HOPE SOMETHING WILL BE DONE BEFORE SOMEONE GETS BADLY HURT. OBVIOUSLY ALL 07 AVALONS ARE EFFECTED NOT JUST A CERTAIN FEW VINS THE LSC CAN BE OBTAINED BY GOGGLING VVT-I OIL LEAK, 2007 AVOLONSHERE IS THE LSC. *TR
WHILE DRIVING TOWARD A STOP SIGN, ATTEMPTED TO APPLY THE BRAKES. THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT VERY LOW TO THE FLOOR, CAR SLOWED DOWN, BUT DID NOT STOP. LOUD ABNORMAL GRINDING SOUNDS COULD BE HEARD AND LOCKING OF ALL BRAKES WERE FELT. I MOVED THE GEAR FROM DRIVE TO NEUTRAL TO PARK, BECAUSE THE CAR WOULD NOT STOP BY USE OF BRAKES. IF I WERE ON A MAJOR ROAD, I WOULD HAVE CRASHED INTO SOMEONE, OR BEEN REAR ENDED. *TR
CAR STALLING OUT ,ENGINE LIGHT COMING ON, SPEED FLUCTUATES, , TIMING BELT CHANGE IS DUE. BUT SUSPECT ENGINE COIL PACK IS FAILING AGAIN. THIS WILL BE 3 TIMES REPLACED IN 7 YEARS. *TR
2007 TOYOTA AVALON. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO VEHICLE ACCELERATION ISSUES. *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS, SHE EXPERIENCED SUDDEN ACCELERATION, IN WHICH THE FIRST INCIDENT RESULTED IN AN ACCIDENT. THE CONSUMER STATED THE FIRST INCIDENT HAPPENED ON DECEMBER 23, 2013. AS SHE WAS PULLING INTO A PARKING SPACE, THE VEHICLE LOST MOMENTUM AND AS SHE PRESSED THE ACCELERATOR TO FINISH PARKING, THE VEHICLE SHOT FORWARD. THE VEHICLE JUMPED THE CURB OF THE SIDEWALK NEXT TO THE WALL OF THE BUILDING HITTING THE WALL OF A STORE, THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE WAS ON THE RECALLED LIST, AND THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, BUT SHE DID NOT KNOW WHAT WAS DONE TO THE VEHICLE AT THE TIME. THE CONSUMER HAS SINCE TRADED THE VEHICLE. *JB
THE DASHBOARD HAS DEVELOPED SEVERAL CRACKS ALL ACROSS IT. AND THE TAPE BETWEEN THE WINDSHIELD AND DASHBOARD HAS ALSO COME LOOSE AND IS PEELING AWAY FROM THE INTERIOR BASE OF THE GLASS. AT THE TIME I MADE A COMPLAINT TO THE DEALER BUT THEY TOLD ME TO CALL TOYOTA BECAUSE I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR FIXING IT MYSELF AS THEY COULD DO NOTHING. *TR
IT WAS DAYLIGHT AT APPROXIMATELY 3 PM LOCAL TIME. WE WERE ON GOOD INTERSTATE ROAD WITH MODERATE TRAFFIC AND DRY PAYMENT. WE WERE ON I-65 ABOUT 10 MILES SOUTH OF FRANKLIN, TN. MY WIFE AND I WERE THE ONLY PASSENGERS IN OUR VEHICLE AND WE WERE BOTH WEARING SEAT BELTS. WE ARE THE ORIGINAL VEHICLE OWNER AND THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN WELL MAINTAINED. WE WERE NOT IMPAIRED AND HAD STOPPED FOR A REST BREAK AND A DRIVER CHANGE 15 MINUTES EARLIER. SHE WAS DRIVING, I WAS IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT. WE WERE IN THE LEFT LANE. THE DRIVER IMMEDIATELY IN FRONT US IN THE RIGHT LANE SUDDENLY SWERVED INTO OUR LANE FOR REASONS UNKNOWN. WE HAD TRAFFIC TO OUR IMMEDIATE RIGHT SO THE ONLY PLACE AVAILABLE FOR MY WIFE TO AVOID WAS THE LEFT EDGE OF THE HIGHWAY WHICH IS WHERE SHE WENT. THE LEFT SHOULDER WAS ROUGH DUE TO RECENT CONSTRUCTION IN THE AREA. SHE LOST CONTROL AND WE SPUN OUT IN THE GRASSY MEDIUM WITHOUT HITTING ANYTHING. SHE WAS UNHURT. MY RIGHT CLAVICLE WAS BROKEN IN TWO PLACES WITH THE TWO BREAKS THE WIDTH OF THE SHOULDER BELT APART WHICH IS ASSUMED TO BE THE PROXIMATE CAUSE OF THE BREAK. I WAS EVACUATED BY AMBULANCE TO THE NEAREST TRAUMA CENTER AND HAD SURGERY TWO WEEKS LATER TO REPAIR MY CLAVICLE. IT TOOK SURGERY, THE LARGEST CLAVICLE PLATE THEY MAKE, AND 10 SCREWS TO PUT MY SHOULDER BACK TOGETHER. OUR AIR BAGS DID NOT FIRE. OUR SEAT BELT PRE-TENSIONERS DID NOT FIRE. THE OTHER VEHICLE FLED THE SCENE. OUR CAR WAS REPAIRED AT A STATE FARM CERTIFIED REPAIR CENTER. *TR
UPON TRAVELING THROUGH NASH, TX ON NOVEMBER 5, 2013, THE OIL LIGHT ON MY 2007 TOYOTA AVALON CAME ON. THE LEAKING LINE OVER THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL BUSTED. I PULLED INTO ROBBINS TOYOTA. I SPOKE WITH SERVICE CONSULTANT [XXX]. HE ASKED ME WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS AND I STATED MY OIL LIGHT CAME ON AND I WAS EXPERIENCING AN OIL LEAK. HE SAID HE KNEW WHAT IS WAS AND GOT MY INFORMATION AND HOW I WAS GOING TO PAY. I TOLD HIM CASH, CREDIT, OR CHECK. THEN HE ASKED WHERE I WAS FROM. I TOLD HIM GEORGIA. HE SAID HE HAD THE PART TO FIX IT AND I ASKED [XXX] HOW MUCH IT WOULD COST ME? HE REPLIED $400. I SAID THAT SOUNDS LIKE A LOT FOR A 6 INCH HOSE. HE STATED I COULD HAVE IT FIXED SOMEWHERE ELSE BUT THEY HAD THE PART IN STOCK. I SAID YOU KNOW I CANT DRIVE THIS CAR LIKE THIS SO GO AHEAD AND FIX IT. THEY FIXED IT BUT ONLY CHARGED ME $339. I WAS THERE FOR TWO HOURS AND THEY CHARGED ME WITH TWO AND A HALF HOURS. ACCORDING TO TOYOTA IT SHOULD TAKE LESS THAN AN HOUR. I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM TOYOTA ON NOVEMBER 29, 2014 THAT THIS PART ON MY 2007 YEAR MODEL TOYOTA HAD BEEN RECALLED. THE LETTER STATED IF THE PART HAD NOT BEEN REPLACED MAKE AN APPOINTMENT TO HAVE IT REPLACED BY DECEMBER 31, 2021. I SENT ALL THE INFORMATION THE LETTER STATED AND WAS SENT A LETTER BACK SAYING I WAS DECLINED FOR NOT SENDING EVERYTHING THAT WAS ASKED. ON JANUARY 8, 2015, I CONTACTED MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND HE SENT OVER ALL THE INFORMATION AGAIN AND EXPLAINED TO THEM THAT I TRADED THE CAR IN JUNE 2014. MY CASE NUMBER IS 1412170721. WE NEVER HEARD BACK ON MY CASE AS OF MARCH 24, 2015. THE LETTERS RECEIVED WERE FROM TOYOTA MOTOR SALES, U.S.A., INC. AS I WAS WIPING DOWN MY DASHBOARD I NOTICED A FINE HAIRLINE CRACK ABOUT AN INCH LONG. WITHIN A WEEK IT GREW ANOTHER 2 INCHES. NOW APPROXIMATELY TWO MONTHS SINCE I NOTICED THE FIRST CRACK I HAVE ANOTHER CRACK IN A DIFFERENT SPOT. THIS CRACK IS ABOUT AN INCH AND A HALF LONG. BOTH ARE IN THE AREA OF THE AIR BACK. MY CAR IS IN PERFECT CONDITION AS I HAVE ALWAYS DONE THE RECOMMENDED MAINTENANCE AND I KEEP MY CAR PARKED IN A GARAGE AT HOME AND AT WORK. I AM EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED THAT MY TOP OF THE LINE AVALON IS TURNING TO CRAP! *TR
I PRESSED BRAKE PEDAL AS I WAS ABOUT TO EXIT A DRIVEWAY AND THE CAR CONTINUED TO ROLL INTO THE ROADWAY. TO AVOID A SPEEDING PICKUP TRUCK IN THE SECOND LANE THAT DID NOT APPEAR TO SLOW DOWN, I ACCELERATED ACROSS THE TWO LANE ROADWAY AND WAS ABLE TO STOP ON THE OTHER SIDE. THE BRAKES APPEARED TO WORK NORMALLY AFTER THAT AND I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE APPROXIMATELY 5 MILES AND LEAVE THE CAR AT THE TOYOTA DEALER. THE FRONT BRAKES HAD JUST BEEN REPLACED TWO WEEKS EARLIER. THE DEALER CHECKED THE BRAKE SYSTEM MECHANICALLY AND HYDRAULICALLY AND FOUND NO PROBLEM. THEY ROAD TESTED THE VEHICLE AND KEPT IT FOR A SECOND DAY AND FOUND THE BRAKES TO WORK PROPERLY AFTER ROAD TESTING IT EXTENSIVELY. SINCE NO PROBLEM WAS IDENTIFIED, THIS LEAVES ME VERY UNEASY ABOUT CONTINUED USE OF THE VEHICLE. *TR
IN JULY 2013, MY PERFECTLY WONDERFUL TOYOTA AVALON (2007, 67,700 MILES) RUPTURED A TTVI OIL HOSE AND WITHIN A MATTER OF MINUTES BLEW UP MY ENGINE. UPON CONTACTING TOYOTA, I WAS TOLD THERE HAD BEEN A SERVICE CAMPAIGN FOR THE EXACT PROBLEM FOR CAMRYS AND AVALONS INCLUDING MY YEAR AND MODEL, BUT THAT I WAS NOT NOTIFIED NOR COVERED BECAUSE MY VIN #WAS OUTSIDE THE PARAMETERS. I FILED WHAT I THOUGHT WAS AN APPEAL OF THIS PHONE AND LOCAL DEALER DETERMINATION. I RECEIVED ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF MY COMPLAINT (1307241937) BUT NO DETERMINATION. I JUST CALLED TOYOTA NATIONAL TORRANCE, AND WAS TOLD MY STATUS WAS CLOSED BECAUSE THEY HAD DETERMINED MY VIN WAS NOT COVERED-- MY APPEAL WAS TO THE POINT OF WHY MY VIN WAS NOT COVERED. I LIVE IN KY, 20 MILES FROM THE TOYOTA PLANT AND HAVE MANY FRIENDS THAT WORK THERE. MANY HAVE TOLD ME THAT THE VIN IS AN UNRELIABLE PARAMETER, BECAUSE OFTEN THEY HAVE OLD PARTS ON THEIR TRAYS THAT ARE INSTALLED ON LATER VEHICLES. EVERY PARTY AGREES THAT THERE WAS A SERVICE CAMPAIGN ON THE EXACT RARE DEFECT-ORIGINATED PROBLEM AND THAT MY DAMAGE WAS THE RESULT OF THE EXACT DEFECT DESCRIBED IN THE CAMPAIGN. EVERY PARTY AGREES THAT I WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE ISSUE IS WHY MY VIN NUMBER (AND THOUSANDS OF OTHERS I AM SURE) WAS NOT INCLUDED AND WHY, GIVEN THE EVIDENCE THAT IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN INCLUDED, TOYOTA IS NOT WILLING TO REIMBURSE ME FOR THE REPAIR OF THE CAR---$307 FOR HOSE AND $6500 FOR ENGINE WHICH ENDED UP BEING THE MARK DOWN OF WHAT LOCAL TOYOTA GAVE ME FOR MY CAR TOWARD A NEW CAR. *JS

I WAS DRIVING MY 2007 TOYOTA AVALON ON 3/23/13 WHEN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT, AND STABILITY CONTROL LIGHT ALL CAME ON. I IMMEDIATELY WENT TO A LOCAL NAPA STORE AND DISCUSSED THE ERROR/S (FOUND ON MY VEHICLE DASH) WITH ONE OF THE SALES ASSISTANTS.. THE SALES ASSISTANT THEN WENT OUT TO MY CAR AND INTERFACED HIS "BLACK BOX" WITH MY AUTOMOBILE COMPUTER AND AN ERROR CODE P 2197 SHOWED UP. AS IT TURNS OUT THIS ERROR CODE IS A FAULTY OXYGEN SENSOR IN BANK TWO OF MY RIGHT EXHAUST MANIFOLD. THE NAPA STORE DID NOT HAVE THE OXYGEN SENSOR IN STOCK HOWEVER, AS A FAVOR TO ME THEY RESET THE COMPUTER AND I REGAINED USE OF MY TRACTION CONTROL,STABILITY CONTROL, AND ELIMINATION OF THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. AFTER FURTHER RESEARCH AND VERIFICATION FROM AN INDEPENDENT GARAGE IT APPEARS THAT TOYOTA HAS A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN ON THIS ISSUE. THE TECHNICAL BULLETIN IS T-SB-0114-08. IT APPLIES TO 2005-2007 AVALON'S AND 2007-2008 CAMRY'S. THE TSB STATES THAT THE CORRECTIVE ACTION SHOULD INCLUDE REPLACING BOTH EXHAUST MANIFOLD OXYGEN SENSORS AS WELL AS THE RIGHT EXHAUST MANIFOLD AND GASKETS TO THE TUNE OF APPROXIMATELY $1,800.00. THIS IS QUITE EVIDENTLY AN EMISSION ISSUE IMPACTING THE SAFETY (NO TRACTION CONTROL AND NO STABILITY CONTROL) OF PASSENGERS IN THE AFOREMENTIONED VEHICLES. IT IS ALSO QUITE EVIDENT THAT THIS DEFECTIVE DESIGN PUTS THE REPAIR COST RIGHT ON THE BACK OF THE CONSUMER. WHO HAS EVER HEARD OF REPLACING AN EXHAUST MANIFOLD. *TR

MY CAR WAS PARKED IN A PARKING LOT AND WAS HIT BY SOME TYPE OF VEHICLE. THE DAMAGE WAS EXTENSIVE AND THE AIRBAGS DEPLOYED AND THE SEAT BELT LOCKED ON THE DRIVERS SIDE. I DO NOT KNOW FOR SURE WHAT HIT MY CAR, I JUST DO NOT FEEL IT IS FAIR THAT USAA IS TELLING ME THE AIRBAG CAN NOT DEPLOY WITHOUT THE IGNITION BEING ON. WE WERE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN WE HEARD A CRACK NOISE ON THE DASHBOARD. TWO CRACKS APPEARED ALL OF A SUDDEN. SINCE THEN THERE HAVE BEEN 3 MORE CRACKS ON THE DASHBOARD. THEY APPEAR WITHOUT ANY PARTICULAR REASON. THE CRACKS ARE BETWEEN THE GLOVEBOX AND THE AIRBAG ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. THE CAR IS GARAGED AT ALL TIMES, WHEN NOT DRIVEN. I EXPLAINED THE IT WAS A SERIOUS SAFETY PROBLEM AND STILL NOTHING! I ALSO WENT TO LIPTON TOYOTA ON 8-20-13 AND SPOKE TO THE SERVICE DIRECTOR, [XXX], AND EXPLAINED THE PROBLEM TO HIM AND HE ALSO TOOK PICTURES TO SHOW TO HIS REPRESENTATIVE. HE CALLED ME BACK A COUPLE OF DAYS LATER AND TOLD ME THAT HIS BOSS WANTED NOTHING TO DO WITH IT BUT THAT HE WOULD SPLIT THE COST WITH ME AND REPLACE THE DASH BOARD FOR $900 OUT OF MY POCKET. I TOLD HIM THAT THE OFFER WAS OUTRAGEOUS, I EXPLAINED THAT IF IT WERE MY FAULT 100% I WOULD PAY THE &1,800, IF IT WERE 50% MY FAULT I WOULD PAY THE $900, BUT SINCE IT WAS TOYOTA'S FAULT 100% THEY SHOULD REPLACE THE DASHBOARD AT THEIR EXPENSE. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT PRIOR TO THE FAILURE, THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER TO BE REPAIRED UNDER THE RECALL ASSOCIATED WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 09V388000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:ACCELERATOR PEDAL). UNLESS TOYOTA CAN PROVE TO YOU ALL THAT THE BADLY CRACKED DASH IS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE, I MAINTAIN THAT IS IS. DASHBOARD AND PANEL HAVE MELTED AND CRACKED, CREATING A GLARE FROM THE SHINY AND STICKY SURFACE. THIS IS MAKING THE VEHICLE DANGEROUS TO DRIVE. I WAS PARKING MY CAR IN REVERSE AT A SPEED OF LESS THAN 5 MILES IN A DESIGNATED SPOT ADJACENT TO MY DAUGHTER'S HOUSE IN QUEBEC, CANADA. THE ENGINE ACCELERATED AND HIT A WOODEN FENCE BEHIND MY CAR. I APPLIED THE BRAKE AND PUT IT INTO DRIVE TO GO FORWARD AND TO GET OUT OF THE CAR TO SEE WHAT HAPPENED. THEN, THE CAR SPED AT ABOUT 100 MILES AN HOUR AND CRASHED INTO A METAL FENCE OF A KINDERGARTEN SCHOOL ACROSS THE STREET AND HIT A TREE INSIDE THE KINDERGARTEN. THEN AGAIN, THE VEHICLE CRASHED INTO THE BRICK WALL OF MY DAUGHTER'S HOUSE IN REVERSE. A 2X2 CONCRETE BLOCK FROM THE BRICK WALL THAT MY CAR ENCOUNTERED HIT MY REAR WINDSHIELD AND LANDED INCHES AWAY FROM MY HEAD INSIDE MY CAR. I CALLED 911 AND POLICE SHOWED UP AND THEY TOWED THE CAR AND I REALIZED IT WAS 9:41 PM AS CONFIRMED BY THE TIME ON MY CELLPHONE AND LUCKILY NO CHILDREN WERE THERE TO GET KILLED. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA AVALON. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE ATTEMPTING TO CHANGE A FLAT TIRE, THE FACTORY JACK DID NOT RAISE THE CAR HIGH ENOUGH TO INSTALL OR REMOVE THE TIRE AND FAILED. THE FACTORY JACK WAS LABELED AS HAVING A LIFTING CAPACITY OF 2,200 LBS HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE WEIGHED APPROXIMATELY 4,000 POUNDS. THE CONTACT DETERMINED THAT SITUATION TO BE A VERY SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER NOR WAS THE MANUFACTURER MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FACTORY JACK WAS NOT REPLACED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 62,000.
