GAS PEDAL STICKS AT A FULL STOP AND TO ACCELERATE THE DRIVER MUST PRESS HARD ON THE ACCELERATOR THAT CAUSES JERKING MOTION IN VEHICLE. WHEN VEHICLE IS COLD, AN EXTRA HARD STOMPING OF ACCELERATOR IS REQUIRED TO GET THE GAS PEDAL TO WORK. *TR
I HAVE ATTEMPTED TO INSTALL THE EDDIE BAUER EB ADJ BOOSTER CAR SEAT (MODEL 22880-MTTA) IN 3 DIFFERENT CARS AND IT SIMPLY WILL NOT TIGHTEN INTO PLACE. IT'S AS IF THE SHAPE OF THE CAR SEAT IS AT A 90 DEGREE ANGLE AND THUS WILL NOT FIT INTO THE SEAT OF THE CAR. IF THE BASE SITS FLAT ON THE SEAT OF THE CAR, THE HEAD SITS STRAIGHT UP, LEANING FORWARD FROM THE SEAT OF THE CAR ABOUT 6 INCHES. TIGHTENING IT WITH A BELT DOES NO GOOD BECAUSE IT CONTINUES TO WOBBLE BACK AND FORTH SEVERAL INCHES FROM FRONT TO BACK OR EVEN FROM SIDE TO SIDE. EVEN THE LATCH SYSTEM DOES NOT WORK BECAUSE IT ONLY PULLS THE CARSEAT BACKWARDS, LEAVING A GAP OF SEVERAL INCHES BETWEEN THE BASE AND SEAT OF THE CAR. THIS IS AN INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS DESIGN. *TR
WAS DRIVING MY 1998 TOYOTA CAMRY. CAME TO A STOP LIGHT. LIGHT TURNED YELLOW. I PUT ON THE BRAKE AND THE CAR CONTINUED TO GO FORWARD. FORTUNATELY THE TRAFFIC CROSSING THE ROAD HAD NOT STARTED. I PUMPED THE BRAKES AND IT DID NOT STOP. I TOOK THE CAR TO MY MECHANIC AND WAS TOLD THERE WERE NO BRAKE PROBLEMS. IT WAS AN ISOLATED INCIDENT. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 TOYOTA CAMRY. WHILE EXITING THE DRIVE- WAY AT 5 MPH, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED WITHOUT INTENTION INTO THE BUILDING. THE VEHICLE WAS MODERATELY DAMAGED, BUT THERE WAS A HOLE IN THE BUILDING. THE MANUFACTURER HAD NOT BEEN CONTACTED. NO REPAIRS WERE MADE TO THE VEHICLE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE UNDER 149,000. THE VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER WAS UNAVAILABLE.
1998 TOYOTA CAMRY. CONSUMER STATES UNINTENDED ACCELERATION CAUSING A CRASH. *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED IN THE SECONDS THE VEHICLE LEFT THE STREET, IT JUMPED THE CURB, RAN OVER A SMALL TREE TRUNK, CROSSED TWO DRIVEWAYS AND HIT A 25 YEAR OLD DOGWOOD HEAD-ON. THE VEHICLE WAS STOPPED BY THE TREE BEING UPROOTED BECAUSE THE SOIL WAS SATURATED FROM THE RECENT HEAVY RAINS. THE TRESS AND BRANCHES DESTROYED THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE AND ITS UNDERCARRIAGE. THE VEHICLE CAME TO REST AFTER IT HIT THE SECOND DOGWOOD TREE. THE WINDSHIELD WAS INTACT, HOWEVER, THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. *JB UPDATED 03/24/10.*JB
1998 TOYOTA CAMRY. CONSUMER STATES SUDDEN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION *TGW THE CONSUMER WAS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT DUE TO UNWANTED ACCELERATION. THE VEHICLE WAS TOTALED BY THE INSURANCE COMPANY. *JB
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 TOYOTA CAMRY XLE. WHILE DRIVING INTO A PARKING SPACE AT VERY LOW SPEEDS THE CONTACT APPLIED PRESSURE TO THE BRAKES, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED, AND CRASHED INTO A WALL. THE CONTACT WAS NOT INJURED AND THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE FLOOR MAT ADVISORY IS NOT RELATED TO THE VEHICLE ACCELERATING. THE CONTACT IS AWARE OF THE SAFETY RISK INVOLVED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 23,900.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 TOYOTA CAMRY. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH ON NORMAL CONDITIONS THERE WAS A LOUD NOISE INSIDE THE VEHICLE. THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHT INDICATORS ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE DRIVER STOPPED THE VEHICLE AND OBSERVED FLAMES FROM UNDERNEATH THE HOOD. THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE EXHIBITED DAMAGES WITH HEAVY SMOKE AND FLAMES. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT AND POLICE WERE NOTIFIED. THERE WERE NO PERSONAL INJURIES SUSTAINED. THE VEHICLE WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED AND TOWED TO THE CONTACTS RESIDENCE. THE CONTACT IS AWARE OF THE SAFETY RISK. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 150,000. THE BALANCE SHAFT HIT THE OIL PAN AND MADE A HOLE IN THE ENGINE AND THE OIL SPREAD ALL OVER THE ENGINE THAT LED TO LOT OF SMOKE FROM THE ENGINE. *TR

HIT HEAD ON WITH MY TOYOTA CAMRY LE 1998. THE STEERING WHEEL AIRBAG DID NOT DEPLOY IN A HEAD ON COLLISION. NO PREVIOUS ACCIDENTS OR AIRBAG DEPLOYMENTS. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 TOYOTA CAMRY. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, THE CONTACT WAS INVOLVED IN A FRONTAL CRASH. THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY AND HE SUSTAINED MINOR INJURIES. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER HAVE NOT BEEN NOTIFIED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 120,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 119,700.
CAR BOTTOMED OUT OVER ANY UNEVEN SURFACE EVAN AFTER I REPLACED SHOCKS AND MOUNTS FOR OVER 850 DOLLARS ON FRONT END. FIINALLY REPLACED FRONT AND REAR SPRINGS AND STRUTS FOR 2000 DOLLARS AND CAR STILL BOTTOMS OUT AND IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE . CONTACT TOYOTA ABOUT PROBLEM BUT NO DEALER WOULD ADMIT TO SUSPENSION DESIGN FLAW IN 1998 CAMRY SUSPENSION. OTHER FAULTS WITH ACCELERATION AND SERIOUS INJURIES DUE TO GAS PEDALS WE'RE A NATURAL PROGRESSION IN CAMRYS THAT FOLLOWED. *TR
GAS PEDAL STICKS WHILE DRIVING OR MOVING AFTER A STOP SIGNAL . IT DOES EVERYDAY WHEN I DRIVE . TOLD THE DEALER , THEY SAID MY VEHICLE YEAR IS NOT IN RECALL BY TOYOTA NOW. NO REPAIRS DONE NOW. ALSO LIGHTING SYSTEM IT BLOWS LIGHT BULB , ALWAYS ONE HAS TO BE OUT OR ELSE IT WILL BLOW OUT COUPLE HOURS. *TR
PROBLEM WITH STICKY GAS PEDAL OFF AND ON FOR 1 YEAR. HAVE BEEN PRESSING HARD TO GET PEDAL TO WORK PROPERLY. SO FAR, NO PARTS HAVE BEEN REPAIRED OR REPLACED ON 1998 TOYOTA CAMRY. ALSO STEERING PROBLEMS IN 2008; TOOK TO DEALER WHO ADDED POWER STEERING FLUID. *TR
OVER THE LAST YEAR OR SO, I HAVE ENCOUNTERED AN INTERMITTENT ISSUE WHERE THE ACCELERATOR ON MY 98 CAMRY BECOMES HARD TO DEPRESS AFTER SITTING AT A STOP LIGHT/SIGN. TAPPING THE PEDAL MULTIPLE TIMES FINALLY ALLOWS THE PEDAL TO RELEASE. HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO DETERMINE WHAT CIRCUMSTANCES CAUSE THE PROBLEM, BUT IT IS ONLY AFTER COMING TO A STOP. I HAVE NOT EXPERIENCED ISSUES WITH UNCONTROLLED ACCELERATION, BUT SUSPECT THAT MAY BE NEXT. *TR
IGNITION KEY JAMS, WILL NOT TURN TO START ENGINE, AND CAN NOT BE REMOVED WHEN ENGINE IS TURNED OFF. FREQUENCY OF JAMMING INCREASED UNTIL I SWITCHED TO USING THE SPARE "MASTER" KEY. IT WORKED FINE FOR A WHILE AND THEN THE SAME PROBLEM OCCURRED. FINALLY, I USED THE "VALET KEY" AND IT HAS WORKED FINE FOR NEARLY 2 YEARS. WHEN I RECENTLY WENT TO THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER TO PURCHASE 2 NEW KEYS, AFTER NEARLY 2 HOURS I WAS ADVISED THAT DUE TO THE AGE OF THE VEHICLE THE NEW KEYS COULD NOT BE PROGRAMMED WITHOUT THE PURCHASE AND INSTALLATION A NEW IGNITION MODULE (ON-BOARD COMPUTER) COSTING $1,812 INCLUDING LABOR AND 2 KEYS. TOYOTA'S CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE OFFICE HAS REFUSED ANY ASSISTANCE. *JS
REAR PASSENGER BELT STUCK AND WILL NOT MOVE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT IN NOVEMBER 2008 WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED. SHE APPLIED HER FOOT TO THE BRAKE PEDAL AND THE VEHICLE "SPUN OUTWARD". NO WARNING LIGHTS WERE ILLUMINATED. THE FAILURE OCCURRED SEVERAL TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHO STATED THAT HER VEHICLE WAS NOT PART OF ANY RECALLS. THE OIL PUMP WAS REPLACED AND THE PEDAL SYSTEM WAS CLEANED AT THE CONTACTS EXPENSE. THE FAILURE HAD NOT OCCURRED SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 116,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 117,000.
I BOUGHT 98 TOYOTA CAMRY 3MOS AGO, THE CAR PULLS ACROSS ROAD, I FIGURED NEEDED ALIGNMENT AND I KNEW IT NEEDED STRUTS,, I HAD STRUTS , AXLE REPLACED THEN NEW TIRES AND BROUGHT TO RUSTY WALLACE FOR ALIGNMENT. THEY DID ALIGNMENT, I LEFT CAR STILL PULLS I BROUGHT BACK AND THEY RECHECKED STILL PULLS SAID THERE NOTHING ELSE THEY CAN DO.. I HAVE ROTORS REPLACE AND BRAKES CHECKED AND NOTHING, I SEEN RECALL BOUT STEERING ON MY YEAR CAMRY BUT TOYOTA SAYS NOT MY CAR! THE REAR MIDDLE SEAT BELT SUDDENLY WILL NOT RETRACT. THE REAR SIDE SEATBELTS SEEM TO GET STUCK EVERY ONCE IN AWHILE. MY BROTHER PURCHASED THIS CAR FROM OUR MOM (WHO HAS BEEN THE ONLY OWNER) LAST YEAR, AND WERE WONDERING IF SHE MISSED A RECALL. *TR

I HAVE A '98 TOYOTA CAMRY LE WITH A FRONT-END RATTLING NOISE EMANATING FROM THE SUSPENSION. WHEN I DRIVE OFF IN THE MORNING (COLD) OVER A MODERATELY BUMPY ROAD, ITS SOUNDS LIKE MY FRONT END WAS GOING TO FALL OFF. THIS RATTLE IS DEFINITELY TEMPERATURE DEPENDENT AND DRIVING ME CRAZY. ON 2/21/2008 I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AND MY AUTO BURST INTO FLAMES. MY AUTO IS A 1998 TOYOTA CAMRY 4CYL. I RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT ABOUT TWO YEARS AGO STATING THAT TOYOTA HAS AN ENGINE OIL SLUDGE DEFECT ON CERTAIN MODELS. MY AUTO IS ONE OF THEM. ADDITIONALLY THE NOTIFICATION I RECEIVED STATED THAT I CAN TAKE MY AUTO INTO TOYOTA TO BE REPAIRED. OVER ABOUT TWO YEARS I TOOK MY AUTO IN WITH ALL THE PAPER WORK/DOCUMENTS AND EACH TIME TOYOTA STONEWALLED ME. ALSO I JUST WENT INTO TOYOTA FOR THE SAME REASON AND WITH ALL THE PAPER WORK ON 2/14/2008 AND AGAIN TOYOTA TOLD ME THEY KNEW NOTHING ABOUT THIS AND THEY WOULD NOT DO ANYTHING. I AM VERY MUCH LUCKY TO HAVE SURVIVED THIS INCIDENT ON 2/21/2008. *TR
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
STEERING IS LOOSE CAR WANDERS LEFT AND RIGHT. RACK AND PINION IS LEAKING. SEEMS TO BE TO MANY COMPLAINTS OF THE RACK AND PINION FAILURES AND THE COST OF REPAIR. TOYOTA YOU KNOW YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THIS AND IT NEEDS TO BE FIXED. WHAT WILL IT TAKE TO GET YOUR ATTENTION? *TR
AIR INDUCTION HOSE ON 1998 TOYOTA CAMRY LE JAPAN BUILT IS FAILING. THE AIR INDUCTION HOSE FROM THE AIR FILTER BOX THAT LEADS TO THE THROTLE BODY IS CRACKING. AND I HAVE CHECKED INTO THIS MATTER FROM READING USER REVIEWS OF THIS YEAR MODEL CAR AND IM THE ONLY ONE WHO IS EXPERENCING THIS ISSUE. THE CAR IS STILL FUNCTIONAL HOW EVER IT HAS A VERY DIFFUCULT TIME STARTING IN THE MORNING. *CN
I HAVE A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT THAT WON'T GO AWAY. SUPPOSEDLY IT WAS RELATED TO THE O2 SENSORS. THEY'VE BOTH BEEN REPLACED, TO NO AVAIL. A DUAL-CERTIFIED TOYOTA MASTER MECHANIC IS SCRATCHING HIS HEAD ON THIS ONE. THERE'S OBVIOUSLY NOTHING WRONG WITH THE ENGINE AS IT'S BEEN PERFORMING WELL FOR THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS, WITH AN ENGINE LIGHT BURNING BRIGHTLY, REGARDLESS. IT'S VERY ANNOYING AS IT'S OBVIOUSLY A USELESS LIGHT, NOW, AND ALL I CAN HOPE FOR IS FOR THE BULB TO EVENTUALLY BURN OUT - AS I DON'T CARE TO GET INTO TEARING OUT THE DASH TO REMOVE IT. VERY VERY ANNOYING (NOW HAVE A PIECE OF BLACK DUCT TAPE OVER THE LENS BUT THAT'S HARDLY A FIX). *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED WHEN THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO STOP. THE FAILURE OCCURRED ON TWO OCCASIONS. ON ONE OCCASION, SHE STRUCK AND DESTROYED A BICYCLE AND ON ANOTHER, SHE STRUCK THE REAR END OF A VEHICLE WHILE ATTEMPTING TO PARK. SHE DAMAGED HER VEHICLE'S BUMPER. THE VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY AT THE DEALER. THE PURCHASE DATE AND SPEED WERE UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 49,750.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 TOYOTA CAMRY LE WHICH WAS PURCHASED BRAND NEW IN 1997. HE STATED THAT THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WOULD INTERMITTENTLY REMAIN STUCK IN POSITION CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO ACCELERATE RAPIDLY. THE FAILURE WAS EXHIBITED MOST FREQUENTLY WHILE ACCELERATING FROM A STOP SIGN OR RED LIGHT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE HE WAS ADVISED THAT THE DRIVER'S SIDE FLOOR MATS WERE CAUSING THE FAILURE; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE PERSISTED WHEN ALL MATS WERE REMOVED FROM THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER INVESTIGATED FURTHER BUT COULD NOT IDENTIFY A PROBLEM. NO REPAIRS WERE MADE TO THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE BECAME PROGRESSIVELY WORSE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 80,000 AND CURRENT WAS 110,000.
FOR GENERAL TIRE ALTIMAX HP - DOT 65UV 3T4 2707, THE LAST FOUR DIGITS (2707) OF THE DOT TIRE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER ARE ONLY MOLDED INTO ONE SIDE OF THE TIRE; YOU HAVE TO REMOVE THE TIRE OR LIFT THE VEHICLE TO SEE THE FULL IDENTIFICATION NUMBER, INCLUDING THE DATE OF MANUFACTURE, WHICH IS NEEDED TO REGISTER THE TIRE WITH THE MANUFACTURER, IN ORDER TO BE NOTIFIED IN CASE OF A RECALL. *TR
MY DAUGHTER HAS 2 1998 TOYOTA CAMRYS BOTH HAVE HAD MASSIVE ENGINE BLOCK FAILURE BY THE FRONT MOTOR MOUNT, ONE RESULTED IN A FIRE UNDER THE HOOD. HER FIRST CAMRY I HELPED HER BUY IT USED ABOUT 1 1/2 YEARS AGO (THIS CAR WAS ACTUALLY TITLED IN MY NAME) AND APPROXIMATELY 6 MONTHS AGO WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED THE ENGINE BLOCK CAME APART BY THE FRONT MOTOR MOUNT SPRAYING OIL ALL OVER THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT, WHICH PROCEEDED TO CATCH ON FIRE, LUCKILY NO ONE WAS HURT AND THE FIRE WAS CONTAINED UNDER THE HOOD. THERE WAS PARTS OF THE ENGINE BLOCK, AND BOLTS AND OIL SCATTERED ON THE HIGHWAY. THAT CAMRY WAS NOT REPAIRABLE. WE FOUND HER ANOTHER 1998 CAMRY ABOUT TWO MONTHS AGO AND THIS ONE SHE BOUGHT ALL ON HER OWN AND IT IS TITLED IN HER NAME. WELL A COUPLE OF DAYS AGO HER NEW 1998 CAMRY HAD MASSIVE ENGINE BLOCK FAILURE AT THE FRONT MOTOR MOUNT IN THE SAME LOCATION AS THE OTHER CAMRY. THERE WAS NO FIRE INVOLVED ON THIS ONE. THE POLICE WERE CALLED TO BOTH SCENES, AND THE FIRE DEPT. WAS CALLED ON THE FIRST INCIDENT. THIS FORM DOES NOT HAVE INPUT FOR 2 VEHICLES. THE SECOND 1998 CAMRY IN MY DAUGHTERS NAME. WE DO STILL HAVE POSSESSION OF BOTH VEHICLES AND IN THE SAME CONDITION AS THE DAY THEY STOPPED WORKING. *TR

MY WIFE STARTED UP HER 1998 TOYOTA CAMRY, SLOWLY MADE A RIGHT TURN WHEN SUDDENLY THE AUTOMOBILE ACCELERATED AT A HIGH SPEED, JUMPED THE CURB, KNOCKED OVER A PARKING METER AND HIT THE SIDE OF AN APARTMENT HOUSE. SHE WAS NOT HURT AND THE AIR BAG DID NOT DEPLOY, DESPITE THE IMPACT. TOYOTA, WHICH HAD JUST SERVICED THE CAR TWO WEEKS BEFORE, REPAIRED THE CAR (WITH MY INSURANCE). WE INSISTED ON A FULL INVESTIGATION BY TOYOTA, WHO DETERMINED THAT THE FLOOR MAT JAMMED THE ACCELERATOR. WE DO NOT BUY THAT STORY IN LIGHT OF RECENT EVENTS AND WHAT HAPPENED TO US. AND THAT IS WHY WE ARE WRITING NOW TO SHOW THIS PROBLEM HAS EXISTED FOR A WHILE. *TR

THE CONTACT STATED THAT ALL FOUR TIRES ARE CONSTANTLY UNDER-INFLATED AND HAVE ACCELERATED AIR LOSS. CURRENTLY, THERE IS A BUMP IN THE DRIVER SIDE FRONT TIRE. WE PURCHASED OUR 1998 TOYOTA CAMRY FROM MY HUSBAND'S 70 YEAR OLD PARENTS LAST YEAR. THERE ARE 82,000 MILES AS OF 1/08. THERE ARE TWO BROKEN SEATBELTS IN THE BACK SEAT(PASSENGER SIDE AND MIDDLE), AND BOTH FRONT SEATBELTS EITHER DO NOT RETRACT OR HAVE TO BE MANUALLY FED BACK INTO THE RETRACTOR. THERE WAS NO PRIOR EVENTS LEADING UP TO THE CAR FIRE. THE DAY OF THE FIRE THE CRUISE CONTROL WOULD NOT WORK. AS THE CAR WAS TRAVELING, IT DECREASED AND INCREASED IN POWER QUICKLY AND FREQUENTLY. WHILE TRAVELING ON INTERSTATE 80 THE CAR SUDDENLY LOST POWER, AND THE GAS WOULD NOT INCREASE THE SPEED OF THE CAR. WE PULLED OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD , AND IMMEDIATELY NOTICED SMOKE COMING OUT OF THE FRONT HOOD OF THE CAR. WE GOT OUT OF THE CAR AND QUICKLY SAW FLAMES COMING FROM UNDER THE FRONT HOOD. WE COULD NOT GET THE HOOD OPENED BECAUSE THE FLAMES WERE TOO CLOSE. WE ATTEMPTED TO PUT OUT THE FIRE BY USING FOUR FIRE EXTINGUISHERS FROM PEDESTRIANS. BEFORE THE FIRE FIGHTERS GOT TO THE SITE. THE ENTIRE FRONT OF THE CAR WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES.*AK WE NOTICED ABOUT 50 YARDS OF FLUID ON THE GROUND PRECEDING THE SITE OF THE FIRE. THE FLUID WAS DARK AND RESEMBLED OIL. IT JUST SO HAPPENS THAT WE WERE MOVING THAT DAY, SO WE LOST A LOT OF PERSONAL ITEMS IN THE FIRE (CLOTHING, ELECTRONICS, PICTURES). WE ONLY HAD LIABILITY AUTO INSURANCE, SO THE CAR WAS NOT REPLACED. THERE WAS TOO MUCH DAMAGE TO REPAIR THE CAR.

WHILE DRIVING 20 MPH, HE LOST COMPLETE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND FEARS THAT A CRASH MAY OCCUR IF HE DRIVES ON THE HIGHWAY. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE TWO REAR PASSENGER AND DRIVER SIDE SEAT BELTS FAIL TO RETRACT PROPERLY. HE IS UNABLE TO PULL THEM BACK INTO THEIR REGULAR POSITION OR PUSH THEM IN ANYMORE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE IS 135,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 130,000.
PRIOR TO DRIVING CAR MY WIFE NOTICED TIRES APPEARED TO BE FINE BEFORE DRIVING ON FREEWAY. WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY WITH CRUISE CONTROL ACTIVATED MY WIFE NOTICED CAR BEGAN TO LOSE POWER. GRADUALLY DROVE OFF TOWARDS SHOULDER. TIRE SEPARATED AND LANDED ABOUT 20 FEET IN BACK OF CAR ON ROAD. NO INJURIES. WE HAVE NOT SPOKEN TO DEALER YET. MY MOTHER'S 1998 TOYOTA CAMRY EXPERIENCED THE GAS PEDAL STICKING ON HER CAR ON A REGULAR BASIS, IN 2006, TO THE POINT THAT THE CAR WOULD NOT GO AFTER ATTEMPTING TO TAKE OFF AFTER A STOP OR AFTER STARTING UP THE CAR. THIS WAS EXPERIENCED OVER A 3 MONTH PERIOD WHEREIN IT WOULD TAKE ANYWHERE FROM 5-10 MINUTES BEFORE THE GAS PEDAL WOULD WORK TO TAKE OFF FROM THE STOP POINT. THIS CONTINUED UNTIL 12/06 AT WHICH TIME THE GAS PEDAL WOULD NOT ACCELERATE AT ALL WHILE SITTING AT A RED LIGHT ON A BUSY HIGHWAY IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC. SHE ATTEMPTED TO TAKE OFF FROM THE STOP POINT FOR OVER 30 MINUTES UNTIL SOMEONE PHONED THE POLICE TO REPORT THAT SHE WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY AND COULD NOT TAKE OFF. THE POLICE SHOWED UP AND ATTEMPTED TO ACCELERATE THE CAR WITH NO SUCCESS. THE CAR WAS THEN PUSHED TO AN AUTO REPAIR SHOP WHO REPAIRED THE GAS PEDAL. SHE WAS CHARGED $50 FOR THE REPAIR. THE TOYOTA RECALL COVERS ONLY THE CARS FROM 2007-2010, BUT THIS PROBLEM EXISTS ON CARS PRIOR TO 2007 AS THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED TO MY MOTHER'S 1998 CAMRY. THIS NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED BY TOYOTA ON MODELS PRE-2007 AS THERE IS UNCERTAINTY THAT THE REPAIR TO MY MOTHER'S GAS PEDAL IS A PERMANENT FIX. *TR
TL* - THE CONTACT STATES THAT IN DECEMBER OF 2001 3 OUT OF HER 4 DOOR HANDLES FAILED. THE ONLY ONE THAT DIDN'T FAIL WAS THE PASSENGER SIDE DOOR HANDLE, SINCE IT WAS RARELY USED. THEN ON DECEMBER 11 OF 2006 THE PASSENGER REAR DOOR HANDLE FAILED. THE CONTACT IS CONCERN BECAUSE ON 12/06/06 THE FRONT PASSENGER DOOR HANDLE THAT SHE GOT REPAIRED IN DECEMBER OF 2001 FAILED, AS WELL AS THE REAR LEFT HANDLE DOOR SEEMS TO BE ON THE VERGE OF BREAKING. THE CONTACT ALSO STATES THAT ONCE THE DOOR HANDLE FAILS THERE ISN'T A WAY TO GET OUT THE VEHICLE AND THAT IS DEFINITELY A SAFETY CONCERN FOR HER. BLUE SMOKE COME FROM TAIL PIPE AFTER CAR SIT FOR A FEW DAYS AND THE FRONT RIGHT STRUT OR SOMETHING ON THAT SIDE RATTLE. THE DATE IS WHEN I FIRST HEARD THE NOISE BUT THE PREVIOUS OWNER HEARD THE NOISE A YEAR OR TWO AFTER PURCHASE,SHE HAD THE STRUTS CHANGED AND THE NOISE IS STILL THERE. *NM
I OWN A TOYOTA CAMRY 1998 MODEL. THE ENGINE OIL LEAKS NON-STOP. SEVERAL MONTHS BACK I RECEIVED A NOTICE OF CLASS ACTION SETTLEMENT WITH THE TOYOTA COMPANY. IT STATED THAT ALL TOYOTA CAMRYS 1998 HAD AN ENGINE OIL LEAK DEFECT, AND AS PER THE CLASS ACTION SETTLEMENT I COULD TAKE MY CAR TO A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND THEY WOULD FIX THIS PROBLEM AT THEIR COST. ALSO, THAT IF I HAD INCURRED ANY COSTS TRYING TO HAVE THIS PROBLEM FIXED ON MY OWN, TOYOTA WILL PAY SUCH COSTS TO THE OWNER. ACCORDINGLY, I TOOK MY CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP. THEY TOOK THE COPY OF THE NOTICE FROM ME AND INFORMED ME THAT IT DOES NOT APPLY TO MY CAR. I WAS TOLD THAT THEY COULD CHECK AND FIX THE PROBLEM, BUT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR IT. IF THIS WAS THE CASE, THEN WHY WAS I SENT A NOTICE IN THE FIRST PLACE TO TAKE MY CAR TO A DEALERSHIP FOR THE PROBLEM FIX? THIS HAS BEEN A VERY FRUSTRATING AND EMBARRASSING EXPERIENCE. THIS IS MY COMPLAINT, AND I REQUEST HELP IN GETTING THIS PROBLEM RESOLVED. *JB
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY, THE ENGINE BLEW. SMOKE CAME OUT OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AS THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY. THE SERVICE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOTIFIED.

I STARTED SMELLING GAS ODORS INSIDE OF THE CAR AFTER FILLING THE TANK. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER IN JULY 2006 AND TOLD THEM THAT I ALSO SAW GAS DRIPPING ON THE GROUND. THEY FOUND NOTHING. I CONTINUED TO HAVE THE SMELL. TWO WEEKS AGO I SMELLED THE FUMES INSIDE AND SAW LEAK. DEALER REPLACED GAS TANK, SAYING THERE WAS RUST NEAR THE TOP OF THE TANK. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE FOR 98 CAMRY'S. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS COMING FROM 0 MPH GOING TO AN UNKNOWN SPEED TRYING TO GET THE VEHICLE TO MOVE AND CONSUMES A LOT OF GAS WHEN THIS HAPPENS.
