INTERMEDIATE SHAFT (STEERING) ON 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY. CAR HAS ONLY 36K AND "CLUNKING NOISE. ONLY REAL FIX IS TO REPLACE SHAFT. STARTED TO READ ONLINE AND FOUND THAT THIS IS A VERY FREQUENT OCCURRENCE IN THIS MODEL/YEAR. IN SHORT, THE PART APPEARS TO BE DEFECTIVE AND THE POSSIBILITY FOR STEERING FAILURE IS PRESENT. NO INJURIES TO REPORT; HOWEVER, THE POTENTIAL FOR STEERING FAILURE IS PRESENT. ASKING THAT NHTSA LOOK INTO THIS MATTER TO PREVENT POTENTIAL DISASTER. *TR
1 THE SAFETY BELT FAILS TO RECOIL BACK AFTER USE, SO WHEN THE WIFE GETS INTO THE CAR THE BELT IS NOT USABLE FOR HER OR MYSELF FOR ANOTHER TRIP. 2 THE FAILURE OCCURS AT LEAST 10X A MONTH. THE CONSEQUENCES WOULD BE A FAULTY SEAT BELT THAT WOULDN'T SECURE THE USER IN CASE OF AN ACCIDENT. 3 WE ALWAYS TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY TOOK IT APART AND RECOILED THE SEAT BELT. HOWEVER IN A COUPLE OF DAYS ITS BROKEN AGAIN. ONE OF THE TECHNICIANS AT THE DEALERSHIP SAID THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM. EVERY TIME WE TOOK IT IN FOR REPAIR WE WERE NEVER GIVEN A REPAIR TICKET. WE WERE NEVER CHARGED FOR THE REPAIRS. HOWEVER THE LAST TIME WE WERE TOLD IT WOULD COST US $365.00 FOR A NEW ONE. BECAUSE THIS IS A CONTINUING PROBLEM WE FEEL THIS SHOULD BE COVERED BY TOYOTA. *TR
2005 TOYOTA CAMRY. CONSUMER STATES VEHICLE HAS AN INTERMITTENT ACCELERATOR PROBLEM *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED WHILE DRIVING IN THE CITY, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED WITH A LOUD ROAR AND HIT A CURB DAMAGING THE FRONT TIRE AND HUBCAP. THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE WAS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO CONTROL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR AN INSPECTION, BUT THEY WERE UNABLE TO FIND ANY PROBLEMS. *JB
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING AT 25 MPH THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED. THE CONTACT SLAMMED THE BRAKES TO BRING THE VEHICLE TO A COMPLETE STOP. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A DEALER AND THE DEALER COULD NOT FIND A PROBLEM. THE CONTACT FEELS THIS YEAR MAKE AND MODEL SHOULD BE ADDED TO THE RECALL LIST SO THE VEHICLE CAN BE REPAIR. ON OR ABOUT JAN. 25, 2010, I WAS PARKING MY 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY ON THE STREET IN FRONT IF MY HOUSE. AS I PUT IT INTO REVERSE TO BACK INTO THE PARKING SPACE, IT SUDDENLY SURGED BACKWARD INCREDIBLY FAST. THE ONLY THING THAT STOPPED IT WAS THE CAR PARKED BEHIND ME. NO DAMAGE WAS VISIBLE ON THE OTHER CAR; BUT MY BUMPER WAS SCRATCHED AND CRACKED. IT SCARED ME. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY. WHILE DRIVING AT SPEEDS OF 10 MPH, THE CONTACT DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL IN AN ATTEMPT TO MAKE A RIGHT TURN. THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED. SHE ATTEMPTED TO STOP THE VEHICLE BY DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL WITH BOTH FEET BUT THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT RESPOND. THE CONSUMER THEN HIT A CEMENT BLOCK AND FLEW INTO THE AIR AND CAME LANDED DOWN HARD ON THE SIDEWALK. . THE CONTACT WAS UNINJURED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. TL*THE CONTACT OWNED A 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY. IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS TURNED ON, IT BEGAN TO IDLE AND AFTER HE PUT THE VEHICLE IN DRIVE THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED TO SPEEDS OF OVER 55 MPH. THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO GAIN CONTROL OF THE STEERING WHEEL AND DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL AS HARD AS HE COULD TO NO AVAIL. THE CONTACT WAS UNABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE UNTIL HE CRASHED INTO A TREE. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED MINOR INJURIES TO HIS KNEES AND ARMS. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE UNDER 68,000.
WHILE I WAS PULLING INTO A PARKING SPACE IN A PARKING DECK, MY 2005 CAMRY CRASHED INTO THE WALL AT THE END OF THE SPACE BECAUSE OF SUDDEN OR UNINTENDED ACCELERATION. EXTENSIVE DAMAGE WAS DONE TO THE BUMPER AND HOOD, BUT THERE WERE NO INJURIES TO ME OR MY PASSENGER. THIS HAPPENED IN ARLINGTON, VA ON 1/23/10. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY PURCHASED NEW. THE DRIVER ENTERED THE VEHICLE, TURNED ON THE IGNITION AND PROCEEDED TO PLACE THE VEHICLE INTO REVERSE TO LEAVE A PARKING SPACE. THE VEHICLE THEN BEGAN TO SPIN AROUND REPEATEDLY AS IT ABNORMALLY ACCELERATED AND SHE ATTEMPTED TO DEPRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE BRAKES WOULD NOT RESPOND. THE DRIVER NOTICED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS STUCK DOWN INTO THE FLOORBOARD. THE VEHICLE CRASHED INTO SEVERAL OTHER PARKED VEHICLES AND BEGAN TO SLOW DOWN AFTER EACH CRASH. EVENTUALLY, THE VEHICLE CAME TO A STOP ON ITS OWN. THE DRIVER SUSTAINED MINOR BRUISING AND SEAT-BELT BURNS. A WITNESS CALLED THE POLICE TO THE SCENE AND A REPORT WAS FILED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND BECAUSE THERE WERE NO RECALLS ON THE VEHICLE, THEY WOULD NOT ASSIST. THE VEHICLE SUFFERED SEVER BODY DAMAGE. NO REPAIRS WERE MADE TO THE VEHICLE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE UNDER 65,000.
I HAD AN ACCIDENT ON THE 22ND OF JANUARY, 2010. WHEN I EXITED THE FREEWAY, I TRIED TO USE THE BRAKE, BUT THE CAR WOULD NOT STOP. IT WENT FASTER AND HIT A TREE. MY CAR WAS DAMAGED. ANOTHER THING IS THAT I NOTICED THAT MY REAR SPEAKER COVERS WERE CRACKED ON BOTH SIDES. A CLOSE LOOK SHOWS THAT THE COVER HAS DISINTEGRATED AND BECOME WEAK. WHEN YOU TOUCH IT, IT CRUMBLES INTO LITTLE PIECES. THIS IS A VERY UNUSUAL THING; I HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCE THIS IN OTHER CARS BEFORE. I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE EXACT PROBLEM IS. I THINK THAT TOYOTA SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS. MY CAR IS A 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY LE MODEL. *TR
DRIVING ON SNOW PACKED ROADS TO SALT LAKE CITY. AT AROUND 65 MILES OF DRIVING THE TRANSMISSION WENT OUT IN MY TOYOTA CAMRY. WE HAD NO WARNING AT ALL, UNTIL THE CAR WOUD NO LONGER DRIVE AND THE INSIDE WAS FILLING UP WITH SMOKE. WE HAD TO HAVE THE CAMRY TOWED TO A REPAIR SHOP AND THEN TOWED BACK TO VERNAL UT. WE TOOK IT TO A TRANSMISSION REPIAR SHOP AND THEY TOLD US, THAT A ROD HAD COME OUT OF THE TRANSMISSION AND THE ONLY WAY IT WOULD DO THAT, IS TO GO FROM A WET ROAD TO A DRY ROAD. WE WERE ON SNOWY ROADS THE WHOLE TIME. WE HAVE NOT REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION, SINCE IT WILL COST US NEARLY $5,0000. WE DON'T HAVE THAT KIND OF MONEY AND IT IS NOT OUR FAULT. WE FEEL THAT THIS IS A MANUFACTOR DEFECT ON THE TRANSMISSION. NOW I HAVE A 2005 CAMRY, THAT I CAN NOT DRIVE AND AM STILL PAYING FOR. IF WE WOULD HAVE HAD ANY INDICATIONS OF THE TRANSMISSION GOING, WE WOULD HAVE TAKEN CARE OF IT. BUT AS I SAID WE HAD NO WARNING. THE CAR JUST QUIT GOING.
I HAVE BEEN A LOYAL TOYOTA OWNER FOR 20 YEARS AND I WOULD LIKE TO TELL YOU ABOUT MY LATEST EXPERIENCE WITH MY 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY. AFTER 91,000 MILES, I NEEDED TO GET A NEW TRANSMISSION. I TYPICALLY DROVE MY TOYOTA TO 150,000 MILES AND NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE POWER TRAIN. I CONTACTED TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE, THEY INITIALLY SAID THEY MIGHT BE ABLE TO HELP ME BUT NEVER FOLLOWED UP. I TRIED TO CONTACT CUSTOMER SERVICE, BUT COULD NOT GET THROUGH. I RECENTLY HAD MY CAR REPAIRED FOR $3300 AT AAMCO TO GET IT DRIVABLE. THEY HAD TO FIX THE TRANSMISSION AND THE WIRING TO GET THE CAR WORKING AGAIN. SEVERAL ELECTRICAL CONNECTIVITY ISSUES EXISTING; AND STILL REMAIN. THE ONLY GOOD NEWS WAS THE ECM WAS OPERATING CORRECTLY. NOW THAT AAMCO FIXED MY CAR, I'VE NOTICED THAT MY CARS ABOUT 400 - 600 RPM LOWER THAN BEFORE. OTHER PROBLEM WITH THE CAR INCLUDE DASH LIGHTS GOING OUT AFTER 4 YEARS. CLEARLY THIS IS NOT A GOOD SITUATION WHEN IT TAKES SEVERAL HUNDRED DOLLARS OF LABOR TO REPLACE A $2 LIGHT BULB. THE LIGHTS THAT ARE OUT ARE THE FAN SPEED, HEAT DIAL AND THE LIGHTS ON THE DASHBOARD FOR THE SHIFT INDICATOR. I BELIEVE THERE IS AN ELECTRICAL ISSUES WITH THE 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY THAT ALSO NEED INVESTIGATION. *TR
MY 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY HAS HAD NO PROBLEMS AND HAS BEEN MAINTAINED AS RECOMMENDED FOR 5 YEARS UP TO THE DATE OF THE ACCIDENT WHICH OCCURRED ON JANUARY 17, 2010. I WAS PULLING INTO A PARKING SPOT AT APPROXIMATELY 1 MILE PER HOUR, LIGHTLY TOUCHED THE BRAKE AND INSTEAD OF STOPPING THE CAR LUNGED FORWARD (SELF-ACCELERATED) UP OVER A CONCRETE BLOCK ONTO A SIDEWALK AND CAME TO A STOP WHEN IT HIT A HEAVY METAL RAILING. AN 8' SECTION OF THE RAIL WAS BROKEN OFF AND FELL 4' AWAY FROM THE CAR. I REPORTED THE ACCIDENT TO THE POLICE AND TO MY INSURANCE COMPANY. A TOW TRUCK DRIVER GOT THE CAR MOVED, CHECKED THE BRAKES - WHICH HE SAID WERE WORKING PROPERLY - AND SUGGESTED THAT THE ACCIDENT MAY HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY A STUCK THROTTLE. NEITHER THE FLOOR MATS OR THE GAS PEDAL CAUSED THE PROBLEM. THE DAMAGE TO THE CAR CAME TO $2200.00 BUT NOTHING WAS DONE TO FIX THE PROBLEM BECAUSE TOYOTA HAS NOT RECALLED THIS YEAR VEHICLE AND THE FORENSIC MECHANIC WHO INSPECTED IT FELT THAT IT WAS A COMPUTER PROBLEM AND THE SOLUTIONS OFFERED BY TOYOTA WOULD NOT ADDRESS THE RANDOM ACCELERATION PROBLEM. *TR

THE DRIVER CRASHED INTO THE DRIVER SIDE OF AN UNOCCUPIED PARKED VEHICLE. THE POLICE WAS NOT CALLED TO THE SCENE. THERE WAS NO PERSONAL INJURY. THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO RESUME IN OPERATION WITH CAUTION. THE AUTHORIZED DEALER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE MALFUNCTION. THE TRUNK AREA AND REAR BUMPER SUSTAINED DAMAGES. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED AT THIS TIME. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 31,933.

THE MANUFACTURER ADVISED HER TO TAKE THE VEHICLE INTO A LOCAL DEALER. THE DEALER STATED THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. MY NAME IS [XXX] AND I AM AN ATTORNEY PRACTICING IN WHEATON, ILLINOIS (TELEPHONE NUMBER [XXX] ). ON JANUARY 11, 2010 OUR CLIENT, [XXX] , WAS INVOLVED IN A TWO-CAR MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT INVOLVING HER 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY. UPON EXITING A CAR WASH, SHE PLACED HER CAR INTO DRIVE (FROM NEUTRAL) AND THE CAR IMMEDIATELY ACCELERATED ALTHOUGH SHE HAD NOT DEPRESSED THE ACCELERATOR. AS THE CAR BEGAN ACCELERATING OUT OF THE PARKING LOT, SHE TRIED TO BRAKE BUT THE BRAKES WERE NONREPONSIVE. UPON EXITING THE PARKING LOT, HER CAR STRUCK A CAR IN THE ROADWAY. WHEN BACKING UP, DRIVING AT SLOW SPEEDS, AND TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL, A CLICKING OR DULL CLUNK CAN BE FELT THROUGH THE STEERING WHEEL. THIS OCCURRENCE IS REGULAR. NUMEROUS ONLINE COMPLAINTS HAVE BEEN SUBMITTED TO THE TOYOTA VEHICLE FORUMS AND TOYOTA HAS ISSUED A TSB #ST001-06 DATED FEBRUARY 16, 2006 FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF THE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT AS THE CORRECTIVE ACTION. HOWEVER, BECAUSE OF THE NUMEROUS ONLINE FORUM COMPLAINTS OF THIS PARTICULAR ISSUE, THERE IS A TREND DEVELOPING FOR VEHICLES THAT HAVE MORE THAN 40,000 MILES. FAILURE OF THE SHAFT IS A SAFETY ISSUE. *TR
WHILE ACCELERATING FROM A STOP THE CAR SUDDENLY LURCHED FORWARD AND ACCELERATED AT A HIGHER RATE. *TR
I OWN A 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY AND EVERY TIME I BRAKE ON ICE OR SNOW MY BRAKES MAKE A LOUD GRINDING AND VIBRATING NOISE. I REPORTED THE CONCERN TO THE DEALERSHIP SEVERAL TIMES AND THEY CONTINUE TO SAY IT'S NORMAL ABS WORKING LIKE THEY SHOULD. I HAVE NEVER HAD A CAR THAT HAS EVER MADE THIS TYPE OF GRINDING SOUND WHEN BRAKING IN THE SNOW. WE ALSO OWN A COROLLA AND IT DOESN'T MAKE THIS SOUND. *TR
I WAS IN A MULTI-STOREY CAR PARK AND I SPOTTED A FREE SPACE 20 YARDS AHEAD. I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR, AND THE VEHICLE BEGUN TO LOSE SPEED NORMALLY. I APPLIED THE BRAKE GENTLY TO TURN RIGHT INTO AN EMPTY SPOT. I WAS BRAKING TO A HALT AT AN APPROPRIATE DISTANCE FROM A RETAINING WALL WHEN SUDDENLY, WITH NO WARNING, THE TOYOTA LURCHED FORWARD AT AN INCREDIBLE RATE OF ACCELERATION, STRUCK THE WALL THEN BOUNCED BACK SEVERAL FEET AND THE ENGINE CUT OUT. I SUFFERED SEVERE NECK TRAUMA, DUE FIRST TO THE SUDDEN ACCELERATION AND THEN THE IMPACT. THE AIRBAG DID NOT DEPLOY DESPITE THE FACT THAT THE DAMAGE TO THE FRONT OF THE CAR WAS ACCORDING TO AN EXPERT CONSISTENT WITH AN IMPACT SPEED OF 30 TO 35 MPH. EARLIER IN THE SAME TRIP, I WAS STOPPED AT TRAFFIC LIGHTS WITH THE CAR IN DRIVE AND MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE. SUDDENLY THE CAR VIBRATED AND LURCHED AGAINST THE BRAKE, TRYING TO MOVE AHEAD. I HAD TO BRAKE HARD TO PREVENT IT FROM DOING SO. THE LIGHTS CHANGED AND I PROCEEDED TOWARDS THE PARKING GARAGE WHERE THE ACCIDENT DESCRIBED ABOVE SUBSEQUENTLY OCCURRED. THE DAMAGE TO THE FRONT OF THE CAR HAS NOT YET BEEN FIXED AND THE CAR HAS NOT BEEN USED SINCE THE ACCIDENT. I REPORTED THIS ACCIDENT TO TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE WHO ARRANGED FOR SOMEONE FROM THEIR LOCAL SERVICE COMPANY TO EXAMINE THE VEHICLE AT THE BODY SHOP WHERE IT WAS LOCATED. THE MAIN CONCLUSION OF THEIR EXAMINATION WAS THAT THEY FOUND NO PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKES. IN FACT, MY COMPLAINT WAS NOT ABOUT THE BRAKES, WHICH HAD ALWAYS WORKED PERFECTLY NORMALLY. THEIR REPORT ALSO SAID "WE ARE HAPPY THAT YOU DID NOT SUSTAIN INJURIES IN THIS INCIDENT". I AM SORRY TO INFORM THEM THAT I AM STILL SUFFERING FROM SEVERE BACK AND NECK PAIN FROM THE INJURIES THAT I SUSTAINED. *TR

WHENEVER THE CONTACT DROVE THE VEHICLE AT VARIOUS SPEEDS INCLUDING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH HE NOTICED THAT THE ABS LIGHT AND ENGINE LIGHT APPEARED ON THE DASHBOARD. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT RODENTS WERE BITING THE ENGINES WIRING. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 36000.
WHEN BACKING UP, DRIVING AT SLOW SPEEDS, AND TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL, A CLICKING OR DULL CAN BE FELT THROUGH THE STEERING WHEEL. THIS OCCURRENCE IS REGULAR. AT FIRST THIS WAS EXPERIENCED 36K MILES, AT THAT TIME REPAIR WAS DONE UNDER THE WARANTY. UNCLEAR IF THE PART WAS REPLACED OR REPAIRED. NOW SAME OCCURED AT 72K MILES, WHEN BROUGHT TO THE DEALER'S ATTENTION, THE MECHANIC STATED THAT IT WAS NORMAL AND NO PEPAIRS NEEDED TO BE DONE *CN
TOYOTA CAMRY 2005 LX. BRAKE FAILURE OCCURS WHEN BRAKING ON SLIGHTLY UNEVEN SURFACE WHILE DEPRESSING BRAKES ON A SMALL BUMP OR POTHOLE. THE BRAKES MAKE A GRINDING NOISE AND DO NOT WORK FOR A FEW SECONDS. AFTER THE SURFACE IS EVEN THE BRAKES WORK FINE. THIS IS NOT SIMPLY THE ABS. FOR SAFETY REASON I MUST USE EMERGENCY 'HAND BRAKE' TO PREVENT MAJOR ACCIDENTS WHILE ON UNEVEN SURFACES. I HAVE MANAGED TO AVOID ACCIDENTS BY USING THE HANDBRAKE OR BRAKING WAY AHEAD OF TIME WHEN I SEE AN UNEVEN SPOT IN FRONT OF ME. I HAVE A 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR IS THE ONLY DOOR THAT HAS AN OUTSIDE LOCK THAT WORKS WITH A KEY. THE LOCK BEGAN NOT WORKING EITHER WITH THE KEY OR WITH THE REMOTE. THE DEALER REPLACED THE LOCK ASSEMBLY AND ACTUATOR FOR APPROXIMATELY $500.00. NOW THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE DOOR HAS FAILED. AGAIN THEY ARE TELLING ME I NEED A NEW ACTUATOR. THERE ARE MANY COMPLAINTS ONLINE FROM OTHER 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY OWNERS THAT DESCRIBE THIS SAME FAILURE. IT SEEMS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM FOR NOT ONLY 2005 BUT OTHER YEARS. CONSUMER STATES THAT 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY NEEDS TO BE ADDED THE TOYOTA RECALL. *NJ THE CONSUMER STATED HE EXPERIENCED SUDDEN ACCELERATION ON 3 SEPARATE OCCASIONS. THE FIRST INCIDENT HAPPENED IN 2008. AS HE APPROACHED AN INTERSECTION WITHIN AN ENCLOSED PARKING LOT BUILDING, HE APPLIED THE BRAKES, BUT SUDDENLY THE VEHICLE SHOT FORWARD AT AN INCREDIBLE SPEED AND CRASHED INTO 3 PARKED CARS. THERE WERE NO INJURIES, BUT THE DAMAGE WAS SEVERE. THE OTHER TWO INCIDENTS HAPPENED ON CHRISTMAS DAY 2009. THE FIRST WAS AT A STREET INTERSECTION NEAR THE CONSUMER'S HOME WHERE HE NARROWLY MISSED A CAR. THE SECOND WAS WHEN THE VEHICLE DRASTICALLY ACCELERATED INTO HIS GARAGE HITTING A DESK AND PUTTING A HOLE IN THE WALL. THE DAMAGE WAS MINIMIZED BY THE USE OF THE PARKING GEAR. AS SHE SWERVED THE VEHICLE AND DEPRESSED THE BRAKES THE VEHICLE STOPPED. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT SHE HAD TO PAY $90 FOR A DIAGNOSTIC TEST. THE CONTACT DID NOT PAY THE COST AND THE DEALER WOULD NOT DIAGNOSE THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT DID NOT CALL THE TOYOTA MANUFACTURER AND REPORT THE FAILURE. ROUTINE MAINTENANCE WAS NOT PERFORMED ON THE VEHICLE PRIOR TO THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 40,000.
I GOT A CAR ACCIDENT IN 12/18/2009. I RENTED A NISSAN CAR WHEN MY TOYOTA CAMRY WAS IN AUTO SHOP. WHEN I WAS DRIVING THE NISSAN I FELT THE BRAKE SYSTEM WAS SO DIFFERENT BETWEEN MY CAR AND THE NISSAN CAR. THEN I TALKED WITH MY FRIEND WHO ALSO HAS A TOYOTA CAMRY LE 2005. HE TOLD ME THE SAME THING THAT I DO EVERYDAY REGARDING HOW TO PUSH THE BRAKE PEDAL. AS LONG AS THE SPEED IS OVER 10 MILES, WHEN I PUSH THE BRAKE PEDAL AND TRY TO STOP MY CAR, THE CAR NEITHER STOPS NOR SPEEDS DOWN, THE CAR RATHER SPEEDS UP (ACCELERATES) FIRST, THEN SPEEDS DOWN. THE BRAKE SYSTEM MAKES ME ALWAYS STAY AWAY CERTAIN DISTANCE FROM THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME AND GET ALARMED BY THE DRIVERS WHO WERE BEHIND OF ME. ON 11/30/2009 MY WIFE WAS PARKING HER 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CAR SUDDENLY SPED UP AND SHE TURNED TO THE RIGHT AND CRASHED THE LEFT FRONT OF THE CAR INTO THE POURED CONCRETE FOUNDATION. FORTUNATELY SHE WAS NOT INJURED. SHE IS CERTAIN THE FLOOR MAT DID NOT GET STUCK UNDER THE GAS PEDAL. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER THEY TOLD US THE 2005 MODEL YEAR CAMRY WAS NOT INVOLVED IN THE RECALL (THEY ALSO TOLD US THE 2005 MODEL YEAR WAS NOT FLY-BY-WIRE AND AFTER CHECKING RECANTED THAT STATEMENT) AND SUBMITTED A CLAIM TO OUR INSURANCE COMPANY. THE INSURANCE COMPANY WILL NOT PURSUE TOYOTA FOR REIMBURSEMENT BECAUSE THE COST TO DO SO WOULD EXCEED THE COST TO REPAIR THE CAR (ABOUT $5,000). THE DEALERS REPAIR SHOP SAYS THAT THE TRANSMISSION FLUID WAS LOW, BURNED AND BLACK AND THIS CAUSED THE CAR TO LURCH FORWARD. IN THE COURSE OF REPAIRS THEY FLUSHED AND REFILLED THE TRANSMISSION FLUID (AT OUR EXPENSE) AND SAID THAT WOULD SOLVE THE PROBLEM. THE CAR WAS PURCHASED WITH ONLY 12,630 MILES ON THE ODOMETER AND THE FRONT END REPAIRED AFTER A SIMILAR CRASH. WE HAD NO IDEA ABOUT ANY PROBLEM REGARDING THE ACCELERATOR SYSTEM STICKING AT THAT TIME. WITH THE MOST RECENT TOYOTA RECALL I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP ABOUT REFLASHING THE COMPUTER FOR THAT PORTION OF THE SOFTWARE THAT CONTROLS THE ACCELERATOR SYSTEM. IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT THE REFLASH INSTALLS AN OVERRIDE THAT CANCELS THE ACCELERATOR WHEN THE BRAKES ARE DEPRESSED. I WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS NO COMPUTER UPGRADE AVAILABLE FOR THE 2005 MODEL CAMRY, ONLY 2007 AND NEWER MODELS.
DRIVER'S SEAT BELT DEFECTIVE. WHEN HOOKED UP, THERE IS NO APPARENT "G" FORCE STOP WHEN YOU JERK ON THE BELT (I.E., SIMULATE AN EMERGENCY STOP). BELT JUST GIVES WAY WITH NO "G GRAB" AT ALL. SHOULD YOU PULL THE SEAT BELT OUT TOO FAR, IT STAYS OUT, WILL NOT RETRACT, AND THEREBY BECOMING TOTALLY USELESS, AND UNSAFE AS WELL AS MAKING IT ILLEGAL TO DRIVE (WITH NO FUNCTIONING SEAT BELT FOR THE DRIVER). TOYOTA DEALER (REPAIR) SERVICE DEPARTMENT CLAIMS IT IS DRIVER'S FAULT FOR "TWISTING THE SAFETY BELT AS IT RETRACTS." WRONG! WHEN SAFETY BELT IS FULLY EXTENDED, AND CAN NOT BE PULLED OUT ANY FURTHER, THERE IS A VISIBLE "TWIST" IN WEBBED BELT AS IT FEEDS OUT OF THE UNIT THAT RETRACTS THE BELT. IT APPEAR THAT THE FIRST 10 TO 15 INCHES OF THE SEAT BELT WILL COME OUT AND RETRACT BACK IN WITH NO PROBLEM. IT IS WHEN THE BELT IS PULLED OUT JUST A LITTLE MORE THAN 15 INCHES (SAY, FOR A LARGE PERSON GETTING INTO THE DRIVER'S SEAT) IS WHEN IT JAMS UP. VERY DANGEROUS, AS IT MAKE THE DRIVER'S SEAT BELT PRACTICALLY UNUSABLE. SO FAR, TO THE EXTENT THAT IT HAS TO BE TAKE BACK TO THE DEALER, THIS HAPPENED TWICE. *TR

THE MANUFACTURER SENT A REPRESENTATIVE TO FURTHER INSPECT THE VEHICLE BUT HAS YET TO INFORM THE CONTACT OF THE FINDINGS OF THE INVESTIGATION. HI, I HAVE A 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY. I READ A RECENT ARTICLE REGARDING THE LEXUS AND TOYOTA HAVING UNEXPECTED ACCELERATION. THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME 3 TIMES IN THE LAST 30 DAYS. THE FIRST COUPLE OF TIMES I WAS COMING TO A STOP AT A STOP SIGN AND AT A RED LIGHT. I WAS APPLYING MY BRAKES AND THE CAR SUDDENLY ACCELERATED FOR A COUPLE OF SECONDS. I HAD TO PUT A LOT MORE PRESSURE ON THE BRAKES TO STOP. THE THIRD INCIDENT HAPPENED IN A PARKING LOT. I PULLED IN THE LOT BEHIND ANOTHER CAR AND WAS APPLYING THE BRAKES. I WAS STOPPED WITH THE BRAKES APPLIED AND SUDDENLY THE CAR ACCELERATED. LUCKILY I STILL HAD MY FOOT ON THE BRAKES OTHERWISE I WOULD HAVE HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. I DID, HOWEVER BURN RUBBER AS THE TIRES SPUN WHILE I HAD TO PRESS DOWN HARD ON THE BRAKES. I TOOK IT IN TO MY MECHANIC. THEY CALLED A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP IN MODESTO, CA TO SEE IF THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM OR IF THEY HAD HEARD OF A SIMILAR TYPE PROBLEM. THEY SAID THERE WAS NO RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM AND WERE NOT AWARE OF OTHER INCIDENTS. TO ME THIS WAS A VERY SCARY SITUATION. I BOUGHT USED 2005 TOYOTA CAMRY FOR MY 16 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER. WHILE WE WERE TRAINING HER, THE CAR ACCELERATED QUICKLY FOR ABOUT 2 SECONDS AS IF SOMEONE FLOORED IT.
