TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT HAD THE TRANSMISSION REPLACED THREE YEARS AGO. AFTERWARDS, THE TRANSMISSION BEGAN HESITATING WHEN ATTEMPTING TO SHIFT INTO HIGHER GEARS. THE CONTACT BELIEVED THAT SHE PAID FOR A TRANSMISSION THAT WAS NEVER REPLACED. THE REPAIR WAS PERFORMED BY MOSS BROS. TOYOTA OF MORENO VALLEY (12630 MOTOR WAY, MORENO VALLEY, CA 92555, (951) 247-8000). THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER APPROXIMATELY A YEAR AGO WHO PROMISED TO CONDUCT AN INVESTIGATION, BUT THE CONTACT HAD NOT HEARD BACK. THE DEALER EVEN INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE MANUFACTURER PAID FOR HALF OF THE TRANSMISSION REPAIR COST. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED AGAIN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 135,000.
THE EXHAUST SHIELD THAT PROTECTS THE FUEL TANK FROM EXHAUST HEAT FELL OFF. UPON INSPECTION, IT APPEARS AS THOUGH THE FASTENERS USED TO INSTALL THIS CRITICAL HEAT SHIELD ARE OF A DISSIMILAR METAL TO THE HEAT SHIELD ITSELF. THIS IS EVIDENCED BY CORROSION ELECTROLYSIS AROUND THE FASTENERS ONLY, THE REST OF THE SHIELD IS CORROSION FREE. A LITTLE RESEARCH HAS SHOWN THAT THIS IS A WELL KNOWN PROBLEM THAT COULD PROVE DANGEROUS IF NOT CORRECTED.
CAR HAS ABS,BRAKE WARNING,VSC,AND MASTER BRAKE WARNING LIGHTS ON. FROM WHAT I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS COULD BE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS.
2008 CAMRY HYBRID STOPPED AT A GAS STATION WITH CAR WAS IN PARK. NO ONE IN CAR, CAR CAME OUT OF PARK, ROLLED OUT OF STATION, ACROSS FIRST 2 LANES, THEN MEDIAN, THEN 2 ADDITIONAL LANES AND ENDED UP IN A TREE IN/NEAR A SCHOOL YARD/PROPERTY. TOYOTA HAD ENGINEER REVIEW IN EARLY SEPT. TOYOTA WROTE LETTER IN JANUARY THAT THEY REFUSE TO FURTHER EVALUATE OR BE RESPONSIBLE FOR COLLISION. AN INSURANCE AGENT AT MY CARRIER HAD EXACTLY THE SAME ISSUE BUT HER DAMAGE WAS BELOW HER DEDUCTIBLE AND SHE JUST HAD IT REPAIRED WITHOUT TELLING TOYOTA. *TR
ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. COMPUTER INDICATED THE TRANSMISSION CRANK SENSOR WAS OPERATING INTERMITTENTLY AND COULD CAUSE THE TRANSMISSION TO CEASE OPERATING. REPLACED THE SENSOR, WHICH WAS HARD TO GET AS TOYOTA CANNOT KEEP IT IN STOCK, DUE TO FAILURES OF THE SENSOR.
12/28/13 - ELSRODE AVE. BALTIMORE, MD 21214, SIDE STREET NEXT TO OUR HOUSE. [XXX] , WIFE, WAS PARALLEL PARKING THIS VEHICLE DRIVING IN REVERSE. VEHICLE HAD UNINTENDED ACCELERATION. BRAKES DID NOT WORK. VEHICLE WENT UP A SET OF CEMENT STEPS AND STOPPED FOR A SECOND, BUT THEN ACCELERATED IN DRIVE DOWN STEPS INTO STREET. AGAIN BRAKES DID NOT WORK. [XXX] DROVE VEHICLE INTO AN ALLEY AND HIT A STONE WALL WHERE IT STOPPED. ENGINE WAS SMOKING. IN REVERSE AND IN DRIVE, [XXX] HAD HER FEET ON THE BRAKES. THE BRAKES DID NOT WORK. THIS WAS WITNESSED BY HER SON, [XXX], WHO WAS THE FRONT SEAT PASSENGER. [XXX]. SUFFERED FRACTURED RIBS AND BRUISED LEGS. PASSENGER, [XXX] , WAS NOT INJURED. VEHICLE WAS TOTALED BY INSURANCE COMPANY. TOYOTA INSPECTED VEHICLE ON 2/24/14 WHO SAID " BASED ON OUR INSPECTION OF YOUR VEHICLE IT WAS DETERMINED THAT IT WAS NOT THE RESULT OF ANY TYPE OF MANUFACTURING OR DESIGN DEFECT". ONE COMPLAINT HAS ALREADY BEEN FILED AT THIS WEBSITE BY ANOTHER CUSTOMER. TOYOTANATION.COM FORUM IS FILLED WITH HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS AND PICTURES OF SIMILAR NATURE AND PEOPLE HAVE EVEN POSTED PICTURES AND INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO CHANGE THE WATER PUMP. I WISH TOYOTA WOULD HAVE SOME HONOR RESPECT FOR CUSTOMER SAFETY AND ACKNOWLEDGE THIS GRAVE PROBLEM. *TR
WHEN YOU DRIVE CAR FOR MORE THAN 20 - 30 MINUTES THE SHIFT SOLENOID LOCK GETS EXTREMELY HOT; THE HIGHER THE SPEED THE HOTTER IT GETS. I MENTIONED IT AT THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP WHEN I BROUGHT MY CAR IN. THE MECHANIC SAID IT DIDN'T GET HOT FOR HIM BUT HE DIDN'T DRIVE IT OVER 45 MPH AND ONLY FOR 10 - 15 MINUTES; BUT THEN HE OFFERED UP THE PART NAME, I.E., SHIFT SOLENOID LOCK. HE TOLD ME TO FOLLOW ALL THE RECALLS AND THAT I COULD FILE A COMPLAINT. *TR

THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE DRIVER'S SIDE SUN VISOR WAS DEFECTIVE AND WOULD NOT REMAIN IN AN UPWARD POSITION. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER FOR INSPECTION WHERE THEY STATED THAT THE TRANSMISSION AND THE VISOR CLIP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND STATED THAT THEY WOULD COVER HALF OF THE REPAIR COSTS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 85,000.
WHEN STATIONARY AT TRAFFIC LIGHT OR STOP SIGN. WHEN A/C IS TURNED ON AND BRAKE PEDAL IS DEPRESSED THE ENTIRE CAR IS DRASTICALLY SHAKING AN VIBRATING BEYOND CONTROLLABILITY. WHEN GEAR IS IN NEUTRAL THE HEAVY VIBRATION IS GONE AWAY. WAS TOLD BY SERVICE MANAGER THAT THIS IS AN NORMAL BEHAVIOR OF ALL CARS PAST 40,000 MILES. WAS TOLD THAT I WOULD HAVE TO LET THE VEHICLE LEARN MY DRIVING HABITS AGAIN SINCE THE NEW THROTTLE BODY COMPONENT WAS INSTALLED. ONCE THE UNIT WAS INSTALLED CORRECTLY AGAIN ENGINE LIGHTS KEPT COMING ON THUS RETURNING BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP. TOOK 3 ATTEMPTS TO COMPLETE THE ENGINE LITE ISSUE BUT THE VIOLENT SHAKING AND VIBRATION IS STILL GOING ON. *TR

THE CONTACT STOPPED THE VEHICLE ON THE SHOULDER AND NOTICED SMOKE COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD. THE VEHICLE THEN BECAME ENGULFED IN FLAMES. THE POLICE AND THE FIRE DEPARTMENT REPORTED TO THE SCENE TO ASSIST WITH EXTINGUISHING THE FIRE. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 135,000. COMPLETE TRANSMISSION FAILURE IN UPPER GEARS CAUSING CAR TO SUDDENLY SLOW DOWN IN THE MIDST OF HEAVY TRAFFIC ON FREEWAY. DRIVER WAS ABLE TO DOWNSHIFT TO 3RD (AFTER NEARLY BEING HIT FROM THE REAR) AND SAFELY LEAVE ROADWAY BUT MANY DRIVERS WOULD NOT BE AS QUICK THINKING. THERE WAS NO WARNING OF ANY IMPENDING FAILURE. *TR
WAS REVERSING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE IN MY 2008 SOLARA AND WHEN I WENT TO SHIFT INTO DRIVE, THE CAR LURCHED SEVERAL TIMES AND THEN ACCELERATED. WHEN THE CAR TOOK OFF, I WAS UNABLE TO STOP IT ACCELERATING USING THE BRAKES. A PASSENGER PULLED UP ON THE PARKING BRAKE, LAUNCHING US INTO A SERIES OF TIGHT SPINS AND COLLIDING WITH CONCRETE BUMPERS IN THE LOT. WE WERE ABOUT TO HEAD OUT INTO A MAJOR ROADWAY WHEN THEY DID SO. ONCE OUT OF THE SPINS, THE CAR HAD COME TO ENOUGH OF A HALT THAT I COULD SHIFT INTO PARK AND TURN THE CAR OFF. IT WAS ONLY WHEN THE CAR WAS TURNED OFF THAT THE FRONT WHEELS (FWD) STOPPED TRYING TO TURN. WHEN WE EXAMINED THE CAR, THE ACCELERATOR WAS STUCK IN A DEPRESSED POSITION. THE WEATHER HAS BEEN FINE AND DRY FOR SEVERAL DAYS PREVIOUSLY, SO THE PAVEMENT WAS NOT WET. AS THE INCIDENT HAPPENED OVER ~15 SECONDS, WE CANNOT GIVE AN APPROXIMATE MPH THAT THE CAR SPED UP TO, BUT IT WAS AT LEAST 30MPH. AMAZINGLY, MY PASSENGERS AND I WALKED AWAY WITHOUT A SCRATCH AND SO DID EVERYONE ELSE IN THE PARKING LOT. HOWEVER, THE SOLARA NEEDS EXTENSIVE BODY WORK BEYOND THE OBVIOUS ACCELERATOR ISSUE DUE TO THE COLLUSIONS. TOYOTA HAS SENT AN ENGINEER OUT TO LOOK AT THE CAR, BUT HAS NOT GIVEN ANY SUPPORT OTHERWISE. THE ENGINEER INFORMED ME THAT HE FOUND NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR, BUT HE DID NOT EXAMINE THE POWERTRAIN IN DETAIL. TOYOTA HAS INFORMED ME THAT IT WILL BE 30 DAYS BEFORE THEY GIVE ME AN OFFICIAL REPORT. WHILE THE SOLARAS WERE NOT INITIALLY INCLUDED IN THE RECALLS FOR THE ACCELERATOR ISSUE, 2008 CAMRYS WERE AND A SOLARA IS BASICALLY A 2-DOOR CAMRY. THE RECALL SHOULD BE LOOKED AT FOR THE SOLARAS AS WELL. I DO NOT WANT TO BE DRIVING A CAR THAT CAN ENDANGER ME OR ANYONE ELSE ON THE ROAD. THIS INCIDENT, AS FRIGHTENING AS IT WAS, LUCKILY TOOK PLACE WHEN I WAS NOT ALREADY AT A HIGHER SPEED AND WAS IN A PARKING LOT. IT HAD THE POTENTIAL TO BE MUCH WORSE. *TR

THE CONTACT MOVED OFF THE ROADWAY AND AS SHE SHIFTED INTO PARK, SHE IMMEDIATELY NOTICED FLAMES COMING FROM UNDER THE SHIFTER. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CONTACTED AND EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED AND TOWED TO A GARAGE LOT. THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED AND INFORMED OF THE FIRE. THE MANUFACTURER AND DEALER TOOK OPENED AN INVESTIGATION TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF FAILURE. THE DEALER ALSO STATED THAT THERE WAS NO DEFECT PRESENT AND THAT THE FIRE STARTED FROM THE CUP HOLDER. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 35000.

CONSUMER STATES PROBLEMS WITH REAR WINDOW DEFOGGER, MAP LIGHT AND JERKING *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED THE REAR WIDOW DEFOGGER WAS NOT WORKING AND WOULD NOT CLEAR FOG OR FROST FROM THE REAR WINDOW. ALSO, THE MAP LIGHT WAS INTERMITTENT AND WOULD NOT ALWAYS COME ON WHEN OPENING THE DOOR LOCKS. IN ADDITION, THE VEHICLE WOULD JERK WHEN ATTEMPTING TO ACCELERATE. THE DEALER STATED THE REAR DEFOGGER WAS INSPECTED AND CHECK AND EVERYTHING WAS FINE. THEY ALSO STATED THE DEFOGGER WAS DESIGNED ONLY TO REMOVE FOR FROM THE INSIDE OF THE WINDOW AND NOT FROST OR SNOW FROM THE OUTSIDE OF THE WINDOW. THE CONSUMER WAS THEN INFORMED THE ENTIRE ROOF WOULD HAVE TO REPLACED TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM WITH THE DEFOGGER. AFTER THE ROOF WAS REPLACED THE PROBLEM WITH THE REAR DEFOGGER HAD BEEN RESOLVED, REGARDING THE JERKING PROBLEM, THE DEALER STATED THAT TOYOTA TRANSMISSION WERE RECENTLY MODIFIED AND THE JERKING AT SLOW SPEEDS.
