We (my wife and I) were driving our vehicle Sunday November 5th 2023 in the morning and experienced a serious issue. While on the highway, the car was stuck with the gas petal in the down position (we did not realize this until after we were able to successfully power down the car) and continued to accelerate in an uncontrolled manner. We were fortunate that our breaks were able to stop the car, and we navigated it to the shoulder of the highway. We then put the car in park, all while the engine was full throttled. We powered down the car and removed the keys. We waited a few moments and tried to power the car again - the engine however remained full throttled. We turned the vehicle off once again and then realized the gas petal was stuck in the down position. We were able to manually get the petal unstuck at this time. We have not driven the vehicle since this incident and consider it too dangerous to do so. Since this incident, we have looked up any potential recalls for this issue and have not found any. To answer the questions above: The gas petal/acceleration malfunctioned. The safety of everyone in the vehicle and other drivers on the road were at significant risk. The vehicle has not been driven since, and the issue has not been reproduced. No recalls were found for this VIN. The vehicle has not been inspected since the incident, but otherwise has passed inspection in our state. There were no warning lamps or messages on the vehicle before or after the incident. We believe the manufacturer is responsible for addressing the issue, even though there is not a recall for this particular problem. This is a known issue by the manufacturer, as they have released many recalls for similar models/years and have even created a video on youtube to instruct drivers how to address this issue, if it happens, while driving.
ACCELERATOR GETS STUCK OPEN. I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE GAS AND THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED. IT WOULD REV AT HIGH SPEEDS WHEN I STEPPED ON THE BRAKE. I TRIED DOWNSHIFTING WITH NO EFFECT. WHEN I FINALLY STOPPED AT A STOPLIGHT WITH BOTH FEET ON THE BRAKES THE ENGINE REVVED UP TO VERY HIGH RPMS, EVEN WHEN I PUT THE VEHICLE IN PARK. THEN IT FINALLY STALLED OUT.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 TOYOTA CAMRY. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED. THE CONTACT HAD TO APPLY EXTREME FORCE TO THE BRAKE PEDAL TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS COASTED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE GEAR WAS SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL AS THE RPMS INCREASED. THE GEAR WAS SHIFTED INTO PARK AND THE VEHICLE WAS TURNED OFF, BUT WAS UNABLE TO BE RESTARTED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THERE WAS ENGINE FAILURE DUE TO NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBERS: 10V017000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL) AND 09V388000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL). THE PREVIOUS OWNER DID NOT HAVE THE RECALL REPAIRS PERFORMED ON THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO TOYOTA WORLD OF NEWTON (66 HAMPTON HOUSE RD, NEWTON, NJ 07860, (973) 383-0200) AND BOTH RECALL REPAIRS WERE PERFORMED. THE VEHICLE WAS STILL AT THE DEALER UNTIL THE MANUFACTURER DETERMINED IF THEY WOULD AUTHORIZE THE ENGINE ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURES AND WAS TO RESPOND TO THE DEALER AND THE OWNER. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 158,000.
THE CAR HAS BURNED OIL FROM DAY ONE. THE TRANSMISSION WILL NOT DOWNSHIFT ENOUGH TO HOLD MOTOR BACK PROPERLY GOING DOWN AN INCLINE. IT WON'T HOLD BACK BY TRANSMISSION EVEN IF YOU DOWN SHIFT YOUR SELF.
SUDDEN CLUSTER FAILURE OF DASHBOARD WHILE DRIVING, POSSIBLE SHORT IN ABS CONTROL SYSTEM CAUSES LOSS OF ODOMETER AND SPEEDOMETER, JUMPING NEEDLE FOR ENGINE TEMPERATURE AND TACHOMTETER, LOSS OF GEAR INDICATOR LIGHT. BOTH CHECK ABS AND BRAKE LIGHTS ARE ILLUMINATED. UNPLUGGING ABS REMEDIES ENGINE, TACHOMETER, AND GEAR INDICATOR. STILL HAVE NO ODOMETER, SPEEDOMETER, AND WARNING LIGHTS FOR BRAKE AND ABS PERMANENTLY ILLUMINATED.

THE POLICE DEPARTMENT HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO AN UNKNOWN LOCATION. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100,000.

THE DEALER COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 119,000.
WE HAVE AN INTERMITTENT REOCCURRING ISSUE WHEN VEHICLE US DRIVEN BEFORE FULL WARM-UP (10 MINUTES OR LONGER). THE ISSUE IS WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A ZERO RPM (STOP LIGHT) SCENARIO, THE VEHICLES RPMS GO UP HIGH, BUT THE THE CAR MOVES VERY SLOWLY. AS IF IT'S NOT IN SYNC WITH THE GAS PEDAL WHEN BEING PRESSED. TRANSMISSION FAILURE HAS BEEN TESTED AND NOT NOTED. DUE TO THE INTERMITTENT NATURE OF THE PROBLEM, WE HAVE TAKEN DRASTIC MEASURES, SUCH AS INSTALLING A REMOTE START TO BRING VEHICLE TO TEMPERATURE BEFORE DRIVING. THIS COULD BE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS IF THE CUT OUT OF THE ACCELERATION HAPPENS WHEN MERGING ONTO A HIGHWAY OR CAUSING REAR IMPACT TO UNSUSPECTING DRIVERS. CAR HAS BEEN INSPECTED AT LOCAL DEALER, WHERE THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO REPLICATE THE ISSUE, BUT I WANT THIS DOCUMENTED SHALL ANY ACCIDENT EVER OCCUR DUE TO SPEED CONTROL FAILURE.
WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS THE SPEEDOMETER GOES TO 0 EVEN THOUGH THE CAR IS STILL PERFORMING AND ACCELERATING. THE ABS LIGHT COMES ON AND THE DEALER SAID THAT THE ABS ACTUATOR NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. IT SEEMS LIKE THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE ESPECIALLY WITH THE HYBRID MODEL AND SHOULD BE RECALLED AND REPAIRED BY TOYOTA
11/01/2015 @ 10:05AM ON MARYLAND ROUTE 29 NORTH, ROUTE 40 EXIT. CAR SPEED AROUND 30 MPH - SLOWLY EXITING ON RAMP. SUDDENLY, FOUR DISTINCT BEEPS WERE HEARD AND CAR ACCELERATED WITHOUT WARNING. LOST STEERING AND CONTROL OVER SPEED - CAR ZIG/ZAGGED. STEPPED ON BRAKE AS HARD AS I COULD - CAR EVENTUALLY CAME TO A STOP. ROAD CONDITION WAS SLIGHTLY DAMP AFTER LIGHT RAIN. LUCKILY, NO OTHER CAR WAS AROUND. TAKING THE VEHICLE TO TRUSTED MECHANIC TO HAVE IT EVALUATED FOR SAFETY CONCERNS.

I STARTED THE CAR AND EVERYTHING SEEMED NORMAL. I STARTED ACCELERATING DOWN THE STREET AND THE DASHBOARD LIGHTS UP WITH ALL KINDS OF WARNING LIGHTS. MILEAGE WAS BETWEEN 69000-69450. THE TRACTION CONTROL, BRAKE, MASTER WARNING LIGHT, ABS AND THE CENTER DISPLAY SAID "CHECK VSC SYSTEM". I CONTINUED TO COAST UNTIL A NEARBY STOP SIGN AND WHEN APPLYING PRESSURE TO BRAKE, TO MY HORROR THE BRAKES HAD AN ALMOST COMPLETE FAILURE. I IMMEDIATELY WENT HOME, LESS THAN A MILE AWAY AND THE BRAKES CONTINUED TO MALFUNCTION THE WHOLE WAY. I WAS ABLE TO STOP BUT ONLY WITH SEVERE PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE PEDDLE WHICH ONLY PRODUCED SLIGHT BRAKING. THERE WAS NO ACCIDENT. COMING BACK TO THE CAR THE NEXT DAY THE WARNING DASH LIGHTS WERE OFF AND VEHICLE WAS WORKING NORMAL AGAIN. HOWEVER, THIS ALSO HAPPENED THE FOLLOWING DAY HALFWAY THROUGH A SHORT TRIP ACROSS TOWN. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY REPLACED A RECALL PART, THE BRAKE FLUID RESERVOIR. THEY CHECKED THE COMPUTER FOR CODES AND THESE CODES DID NOT SHOW UP IN THE CODE HISTORY DESPITE IT BEING 2 DAYS BEFORE. THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN INTERMITTENT AND DID NOT HAPPEN THE DAY I TOOK IT IN TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE CHECK VSC SYSTEM WARNING CAME ON ALONG WITH ABS AND BRAKE LIGHT WARNINGS. OUT OF THE BLUE THE CAR WAS VERY HARD TO STOP. WAS LUCKY TO BE IN A PARKING LOT AT THE TIME. HAD THE CAR TOWED HOME. THE TOW DRIVER DID NOT SEE THE WARNING LIGHTS WHEN HE WAS GETTING THE CAR IN POSITION TO TOW IT. CHECK ONLINE AND SAW THAT MANY OTHER PEOPLE WHERE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE THAT I WAS HAVING. I THINK THE CAR IS UNSAFE AND A RECALL SHOULD BE ISSUED BEFORE PEOPLE ARE KILLED. *TR
ABOUT A MONTH AGO I WAS DRIVING ALONG AND THE RADIO GOT REALLY LOUD FOR NO REASON FOR 10 SECONDS AND THEN SUBSIDED. I DIDN'T THINK MUCH OF THIS AT THE TIME, BUT AFTER WEDNESDAY, I NOW BELIEVE IT MUST HAVE BEEN RELATED SOMEHOW. I WAS SITTING OFF-ROAD WAITING FOR TRAFFIC TO PASS BY IN ORDER TO TURN-AROUND AND BEGIN DRIVING SOUTH. I HAD JUST TURNED ON THE CAR AND TURNED THE STEERING WHEEL IN ORDER TO MAKE MY APPROXIMATE 175 DEGREE TURN. MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE AND THE CAR READY TO MOVE. ALL OF A SUDDEN THE ENGINE REVVED UP AND THE CAR TRIED LURCHING FORWARD AS THOUGH SOMEONE'S FOOT WAS ON THE ACCELERATOR. I HAD TO REASSERT MY FOOT PRESSURE ON THE BRAKE IN ORDER TO KEEP THE CAR FROM MOVING. MY FOOT HAD NOT LEFT THE BRAKE, THERE WAS NO PERSON OR THING TRYING TO ACCELERATE THE CAR, IT JUST OCCURRED. THE NEWS ABOUT FAULTY ACCELERATORS ENTERED MY MIND. THERE HAS NOT BEEN ANY FURTHER INCIDENT AT THIS TIME. *TR
