2024 Toyota Corolla Cross Complaint Log

My car was stopped at a stop sign. My auto off engaged, and then my engine shut down. I was stalled out on the road and it took me 6 attempts to restart my car. Message was engine stopped, power steering failure

Incredibly dangerous situation! Driving down I-15 in SLC when my Sunroof EXPLODED! 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid, 22k miles, purchased new and sunroof came with the car. Sounded like a gunshot. Luckily, no one was injured by flying glass and kept the car stable. I could see how someone reacting to this sound might slam on their brakes or swerve the car or worse the driver could be cut by falling glass if the slider were open. My "damage" is having to pay for a new roof. Toyota dealer tried to say that something hit my car and it wasn't a manufacturer defect. Right. Tell me how a rock is going to get past my large Thule cargo box to drop a hole like this one! I filed a claim with State Farm but the part is special and must be ordered. UP until yesterday I have never had any issues with the sunroof. Such a racquet. Toyota gets to keep selling replacement sunroofs and the insurance companies and consumers are the ones paying for their poor workmanship.

My 2024 toyota corolla xse hybrid had died 3 times because the 12 volt battery is no good. The battery has been replaced with the same type of 12 volt battery 2 times and the car still died. the car becomes inoperable. Hybrid cars, particularly Toyota, are experiencing significant 12-volt battery failures due to parasitic drain, leading to premature battery death. Affected models include the Toyota Corolla. The issue, often linked to faulty software, can cause the car to become completely inoperable. Commonly Reported Models with 12V Battery Issues: Toyota Corolla: Multiple reports of 12V battery issues, especially in, but not limited to, colder climates.

See attached document for complaint.

During start atempt, car could not find the key fob even in front of the start button. Car would not start and I was in a unknown area where there are multiple safety concerns and hazards to driver and passenger.

The vehicle’s multimedia screen intermittently displays a message prompting to “enter 6-digit PIN.” This message frame appears randomly and covers the center of the screen, including while the vehicle is in motion. When this occurs, the navigation display becomes blocked, creating a potential safety hazard as the driver’s view of navigation instructions is obstructed. To clear the message, the driver must manually press the “X” icon and then reselect the map display. This action requires driver attention and physical interaction with the screen while driving, increasing the risk of distraction and compromising safe vehicle operation. The issue occurs unpredictably—sometimes after several days, sometimes within minutes, or even immediately after pressing X to close the message. This recurring behavior significantly limits the use of navigation and other vehicle functions, effectively impairing normal and safe vehicle operation. Toyota dealer advised contacting the Brand Engagement Center. The Brand Engagement Center referred back to the dealer, suggesting the issue may be “mechanical.” The dealer reports that the vehicle is functioning normally. This creates a closed loop in which neither the dealer nor Brand Engagement Center accepts responsibility for resolving the issue. As a result, the safety concern remains unaddressed. Toyota should investigate and provide a definitive resolution to prevent the multimedia system from displaying the PIN prompt while the vehicle is in motion.

On July 2, 2025, while driving at approximately 8:35 PM my 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross suddenly and unexpectedly came to a complete stop. The vehicle's Pre-Collision System (PCS) activated without any obstacle, pedestrian, or vehicle in front of me. I was decelerating at about 15–20 mph in clear weather and road conditions. The abrupt stop was extremely dangerous and could have caused a serious rear-end collision had another car been behind me. This created a significant safety risk to me and to others. I had already completed the Toyota recall related to the pre-collision/braking system weeks prior. Despite this, the malfunction still occurred. The issue has not yet been confirmed or reproduced by a dealer, but I have contacted Toyota and scheduled a full inspection. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. There were no warning lamps, messages, or error alerts before the incident. The car simply braked suddenly without warning. Out of fear for my safety, I have since disabled the PCS system. I am now afraid to drive the car, especially at higher speeds, and have requested that Toyota escalate the matter for further resolution or potential buyback.

January of 2025 the vehicle was put in drive and the vehicle shut down. "Power steering low egine stopped" message appeared. I Put the vehicle in park and started the car back up. I took it to the dealership. The battery was low they charged it and released it back. The vehicle was brought back shortly after that due to the vehicle being put in park and shutting down displaying the same "low power steering. Egine stopped" message. Along with "EPB stopped Incompletely". Brought it back in and the battery was low and they replaced it. A few months later the vehicle was brought in due to multiple braking events either when pulling forward with no acceleration (nothing was around the vehicle) or putting the vehicle into reverse with no acceleration (nothing behind the vehicle). During these events the car made a loud grinding sound and displayed BRAKE across the dash. The 3rd time at the dealership was due to the car shutting down when put into park and braking when reversing out of a parking spot. The code "epb stopped Incompletely" and the BRAKE message appeared. The dealership checked for codes but the car didn't have any saved. They can't recreate it. They had a feild tech come out but I'm unsure of what was found because they haven't released it. As of June 22, 2025 I was driving and the car braked on me while going 40 mph. The seat belt locked up and threw me and my passenger forward. A red BRAKE message appeared and the car sounded an alarm. The vehicle was brought back into the dealership on June 23, 2025 the dealership turned me away. Corporate started a case.

On [XXX], at the intersection of [XXX] and [XXX] in Los Angeles, [XXX] was operating the subject vehicle when it was involved in a hit-and-run that resulted in a secondary collision with multiple vehicles. Photos (attached) document the significant impact. Emergency responders were required to extricate [XXX]from the vehicle, during which they informed her that the airbags failed to deploy—a fact also documented in the official LAPD report. The failure of the airbag system represents a significant and dangerous malfunction of the vehicle’s safety features. This is particularly troubling in light of Toyota’s recent recall, which affects more than 400,000 vehicles. Roof rail attach to the vehicle is appears to be loose. Can cause a safety hazard if it rips off vehicle while driving on the highway

Brakes were malfunctioning and did not work. I was traveling South of Hwy 99 in the middle lane and noticed the vehicles in front of me were slowing down and braking. I attempted to applied the brakes but it was not working. I swerved to the left to avoid a collision with the vehicles in front of me. As I swerved to the left onto the fast lane, I hit the vehicle in that lane. Myself, along with the 3 passengers were transported to the hospital. The vehicle is towed and has not been inspected by the insurance company. Police was called to the scene. There are no recalls that I know of on brakes for my vehicle.

On January 10, 2025, I was driving my 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross and entered a parking lot to park. I started a three-point turn to park head-in and was slowly turning the steering wheel to the right. I was about to switch from the accelerator to the brake when the car suddenly accelerated rapidly. It felt like the front of the car lifted, and I lost control, colliding with a parked car to the left of the space. The distance between the two cars was about 5 feet, and the sudden acceleration lasted only 1-2 seconds. My car has a proximity warning and automatic emergency braking system, (Pre-Collision System) but neither activated, and the airbags did not deploy. My husband, in the passenger seat, heard a loud engine noise when the car surge forward unexpectedly. After the crash, I parked the car, checked for any objects near the pedals but found nothing. The other car had rear bumper damage, and mine had significant front-right damage, including a severely worn tire. I reported the incident to the police, exchanged information with the other driver, and called a tow truck. I later suspected a malfunction in the throttle or safety systems, such as the proximity warning or braking systems, which failed to activate. No prior warning lights or issues were present. The failure of these systems increased the risk to both myself and others in the parking lot. The cause of the malfunction has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or service center. The vehicle’s onboard diagnostic (OBD) system could be checked for errors, as a potential cause of the sudden acceleration but was told that it is difficult to diagnose such issues and was told that it was slim to find anything even if I did a diagnostic check. Given the car’s advanced systems, I believe these components should be thoroughly inspected to prevent future incidents.

Corolla Cross Hybrid SE- The tail lights are almost non existent. At night when I look from behind, the car is almost invisible from 50 feet away. Lic plate light is the only help. Looks very dangerous and scary to drive in the evening or in the dark. Please look into this.

After taking my vehicle for the hard braking recall, the rear liftgate no longer opens. The door latch is released and I can manually open the door. Once open the door does respond and closes with FOB or close button.

Brake lights dont completely light up. High chance of rearend accident at night.

Key FOB will not be detected onboard by the system after start and alarm persist for more than 30-45 minutes.

Toyota recall 24TA11 was performed by the dealership. It is a software update to help with braking under certain conditions. However, this update has led to the power tailgate not longer opening. This is an unintended side effect of the update. Several other instances of the tailgate failing after the software update have been reported. Toyota must fix this.

While returning home from an outing, I accelerated the gas to switch lanes and the check engine light came on, I heard a gravel like pop noise. And saw smoke coming from my car towards the back. A car next to me told me to pull over as my car was on fire. After finding a safe destination to pull over, the hood of my car and engine caught on fire. Thus resulting to a total loss of the car and assistance from the fire department as well as the police department to deal with the aftermath of the vehicle.

Received message in car stating power brake low. On the app, received a message stating there is a malfunction with the brakes. The messages have since gone away and will be contacting dealership.

After turning left into a parking spot, car did not stop as usual. The car went over curb and hit a 'no overnight parking sign. The collision bent the sign pole and damaged my driver front black bumper. I was stunned and did not realize it was a vehicle error, at first. I have owned the vehicle 6 months and have had difficulty understanding the technical aspects of it. I searched online and found the recall, but have not been officially notified yet. I had a similar incident the first month i owned it. I turned left into a parking spot, the car did not stop until hitting bushes in front of me. At that time I thought it was my error. No, it has not been inspected. I was distraught and decided to leave it as is. This is very dangerous,as I could have hit a pedestrian or crashed down a hill.

When i unlocked my vehicle and step on the brakes and press the ignition, the car suddenly alarms and says “check hybrid system, ignition on, no key detected”. Several attenpts are made and it keeps happening five times until it stops. This condition kept me from travelling and delayed me for more than 45 minutes.

The headlights on this vehicle are not safe. They have a shadow , or curtain over the top half of beam. This severely curtails your ability to see safely down the road. Going up to a hill, your ability to see road hazards are almost nill. You cannot see hazards to the side of vehicle , or above, either. My wife is a school bus driver, and is aware you should be able to see 15 seconds in front of you, or a city block. This vehicle totally fails to illuminate anything near that. And you cannot read street signs, unless they have their own lighting. We took it to the dealer. They adjusted the lights, which didn’t solve the problem, and now we are getting flashed by other drivers, and are causing road rage. Please help!

Vehicle: 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross (gas‑powered, non‑hybrid) System/Component: Electrical System → Start/Stop System → Driver Information Display Issue Type: Design Defect / Driver Distraction I am reporting a recurring issue with my 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross (gas‑powered, not a hybrid). The vehicle frequently displays a “Battery Charging” message on the dashboard whenever I come to a stop at traffic lights or stop signs. This message appears even when the vehicle is operating normally and there is no actual charging system problem. According to Toyota documentation and owner discussions, this message is triggered when the auto start/stop system decides not to shut off the engine due to the 12‑volt battery’s state of charge. However, the message is unnecessary, cannot be disabled, and provides no actionable information to the driver. It functions as a non‑critical status notification but is presented with the same prominence as a warning. This creates a driver distraction, as the message repeatedly draws attention away from the road for a condition that is not a fault, not a safety issue, and not something the driver can address. The message appears frequently during normal driving and cannot be suppressed. I believe this is a design flaw in Toyota’s start/stop implementation and dashboard messaging. The system should not display a warning‑style message for normal operating behavior, especially when it cannot be corrected by the driver. I am requesting that NHTSA log this issue as a potential driver‑distraction concern and encourage Toyota to revise the software to eliminate or suppress this unnecessary message.

The contact owns a 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross. The contact stated while driving at approximately 55 MPH, the front windshield suddenly fractured on the passenger’s side without impact. The contact had not taken the vehicle to the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to the Insurance provider for assistance. The failure mileage was 2,688.

AWD Transmission slips when trying to "shift" and sometimes feels like it loses power while gas is applied. Already brought to dealer for service, and they confirmed it will need a new CVT transmission. This is only after 6 months of ownership. There was no indication on the dashboard lights that the transmission was about to fail, nor was this brought up during regular service intervals. This [XXX] we were travelling up on [XXX] past Baker and the car lost forward momentum, even though I was pressing fully on the gas pedal. We had to coast to the side of the road while the trucks were whizzing by, and had to be towed to the closest Toyota dealership in Las Vegas. At first, there were no warning lights, but after turning the engine off and then on, warnings about the AWD system, Check Engine lights, and a "Drive-Start failure" message started showing. Engine itself had no issues, but it felt like the car was stuck on a high gear (or its CVT equivalent), and refused to move forward and actually rolled back as we were on an incline. Eventually it would move forward and then it seemed like it was no stuck on 1st/launch gear, which it kept up until we got dropped off by the tow truck to Autonation Toyota in Las Vegas, and the car handed off to them. Last update was that Toyota confirmed it was a transmission issue and the CVT will be replaced by them. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The vehicle, Toyota Corolla Cross seems to have an issue with stopping from a reasonable distance. Unlike other Toyota models, I find it difficult to stop the car in the stop signs and traffic lights with reasonable brake pressures.

We recently leased a 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross. While driving home on I4, there is a section of the road that has (longitudinal) grooves in the road surface between exits 118 and 129. The vehicle starts to bounce 'back and forth' in the lane, as if it wants to change lanes, but it stays in the lane, continually moving from side to side. No indication in the steering wheel that anything is wrong. We brought it to a Toyota dealer, and they said 'some cars have that problem on grooved surfaces, but nothing is wrong with the vehicle'. Thanks

While driving down long hills, car jumps out of adaptive cruise control. Car just goes into coasting mode and never picks up again. Speed drops and car doesn't return to cruise. If you step on accelerator cruise doses return. This occurred many times descending Blue Mountain on route 309. Could be a problem if cars trail to close behind. Car also jumps out of cruise control when going over rough bumps.

After dark, the vehicle was started and the dashboard touchscreen that displays backup camera and other information was moderately bright. The display setting was set to 'Automatic', expecting the screen to dim when ambient light is low. On shifting into forward gear, the screen actually brightens. In the dark. With the inside light too bright, it is difficult to see objects outside of the vehicle. I scraped a mailbox, which I couldn't see as I pulled to the side of the road to turn the display off. Vehicle cosmetic damage, no police report. Cost of repairs at this time is unknown - scratched paint & creased metal along passenger front fender, 2 doors and rear panel. I do not know if this issue has been reproduced; this occurred on a rental with less than 3500 miles on the odometer. It has been reported to the insurance company and will be reported to the rental agency during business hours. There would be no warning as the condition is obvious as one pulls out of a lighted area, which is what happened.

The contact owns a 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the transmission failed to properly shift into third gear. Additionally, the vehicle was hesitating while accelerating and was losing automotive power. The vehicle was driven to the dealer, but the vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 150,082.

The rod holding up the hood appears to be an dangerous arrangement.

The absence of towing eyelets on the Toyota Corolla Cross, despite suggestions in the Owner's Manual to utilize them in emergencies, may pose a safety risk to drivers and the vehicle itself. Additionally, the presence of plastic covers on the bumpers falsely suggests the existence of towing eyelets, potentially misleading consumers. Please see attached PDF

This concerns the media screen and has affected several models from 2023, incl my car. I use the screen for my GPS, for getting around and making timely turns and signals when in unfamiliar areas. The problem is that, starting a month after I acquired the car, this screen has pop-up ads that completely cover the screen that try to sell a service I do not want, called "drive-connect". (This is NOT part of the "free trial" services that are not invasive; there is a $15 charge for "drive-connect".) So I can find myself on a multi-lane highway needing advance warning for timely lane-changes etc, when suddenly my map is fully covered up. I then need to press a tiny button twice in order for it to clear, all at 65 mi/hour - for one example. The dealership is unable to remove it and employees have apparently been instructed to hush. Here is the link for more complaints about this issue, incl people wanting to sell their car and "never use Toyota again" because of it: [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Night driving in this vehicle is impaired because of the dark spots and shaded areas coming from the headlights. It creates a distraction for the driver and is safety concern. I find it very difficult to drive at night. I have contacted Toyota directly and had vehicle inspected. Their response is that it is part of the design and is not repairable.

The car started alarming and cannot detect the key fob. I got stock for 15 minutes.
