MY DAUGHTER HAD A SERIOUS ACCIDENT IN A 2004 TOYOTA COROLLA AND NONE OF THE AIRBAGS DEPLOYED. *TR
THE LOCK CYLINDERS ON BOTH FRONT DOORS HAVE MALFUNCTIONED. THE PASSENGER SIDE (WHICH I RARELY USE) WILL NO LONGER UNLOCK; THE DRIVER SIDE WILL NO LONGER LOCK. I HAVE NEVER USED THE OUTSIDE LOCK TO LOCK THE DOOR SO DIDN'T EVEN KNOW THE PROBLEM UNTIL THE MECHANIC TOLD ME. $450 TO FIX BOTH LOCKS BUT I NEED TO BE ABLE TO GET IN THE CAR. *TR
SEAT BELTS IN REAR OF TWO TOYOTA VEHICLES FAILED TO ENGAGE LATCH. THIS OCCURRED IN BOTH THE 2004 TOYOTA COROLLA AND THE 2004 TOYOTA 4-RUNNER. THIS IS A SAFETY CONCERN AS THE PASSENGER IS FORCED TO RIDE UNSECURED IN THE VEHICLE. THIS ALSO FACE THE DRIVER TO VIOLATE STATE LAW. I FIND IT IRONIC THAT THE SAME BELT IS USED ON BOTH VEHICLES AND BOTH VEHICLES HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA COROLLA CE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE LENSES ON THE EXTERIOR LIGHTING HAVE BECOME OPAQUE, WHICH MAKES IT DIFFICULT FOR HIM TO DRIVE IN THE DARK. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA COROLLA. THE CONTACT RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FOR NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 08V162000 (VISIBILITY:GLASS, SIDE/REAR). THE DEALER PERFORMED THE RECALL REPAIRS. APPROXIMATELY TWO MONTHS LATER, THE CONTACT BEGAN HEARING A RATTLING SOUND WITH THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE WINDOWS. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOT NOTIFIED. ECU (SRS) & TAKATA RECALL
CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, SHOWED EVAP FUEL LEAK. PROBLEM WAS TRACED TO CORRODED FUEL FILLER NECK. PARTS ARE BACK-ORDERED BECAUSE THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM. TOYOTA ISSUED A TSB ON THIS PROBLEM BUT NO RECALL YET. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA COROLLA. THE CONTACT STATED THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED THREE TIMES WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS. THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED AS SHE DROVE INTO THE DRIVEWAY AND NEARLY CRASHED INTO THE GARAGE UNTIL SHE APPLIED EXTREME PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE PEDAL. JUNE 24 I TOOK MY 2004 TOYOTA COROLLA -- VIN [XXX] --- IN FOR THE RECALL SSC # 80A 03-04 FRONT DOOR GLASS BOLTS SAFETY RECALL. THE WINDOW APPEARED TO BE IN WORKING ORDER, WHEN I PICKED IT UP. THE WINDOW CAME TO A TIGHT SEAL AT THE UPPER PART OF THE WINDOW. JUNE 25, THE WINDOW IS OFF TRACK AGAIN LEAVING A GAP AT THE UPPER PORTION WHEN THE WINDOW ROLLS UP! TOYOTA SAID THEY WILL NOT REPLACE THE WEATHER STRIPPING. THE WINDOW BECAUSE IT WENT OFF TRACK BECAUSE OF A DEFECT AT THE FACTORY, MADE THE RUBBER AROUND THE WINDOW ALL LOOSE AND MAYBE AFFECTING THE WINDOW NOW. I CAN SEE HOW THE STRIPPING HAS FORMED IN A WAY THAT IT MIGHT PUSH THE WINDOW AWAY FROM THE INNER TRACK -- WHEN WINDOW GOES UP, THE STRIPPING IS LOOSE AND THE WINDOW MOVES AS GOING UP. I PERSONALLY THINK TOYOTA IS GETTING THE EASY WAY OUT OF THIS. ON A SIDE NOTE.. I ALREADY HAD TO REPLACE THE WINDOW CAUSE IT SHATTERED ON ME, THANK GOD I HAD TINT ON THE WINDOW. CRUISE CONTROL DOESN'T WORK. I HAD IT REPAIRED AT THE DEALERSHIP AND ABOUT A MONTH LATER IT WENT OUT AGAIN. WHEN I CALLED BACK, THEY SAID THEY WOULD REPAIR IT, BUT IT WOULD NOT BE FREE OF CHARGE. SEEMED LIKE THE REPAIR SHOULD HAVE LASTED IF IT TRULY WAS FIXED. HAVEN'T HAD CRUISE SINCE AND IT WAS SO NICE FOR LONG DISTANCE TRAVEL. *TR

WATCHED 20/20 MAY 9TH 2008 ABOUT HOW TO CHECK FOR PRODUCTION DATE ON TIRES. CHECKED DATE ON TIRES MAY 10TH 2008. DATE IS REMOVED OR BUFFED OFF OF TWO FRONT TIRES! THE CIRCLE WHERE THE NUMBERS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE IS STILL ON THE TIRE BUT THE DATE HAS BEEN REMOVED. TWO FRONT TIRES WERE BOUGHT APRIL 22ND 2008. (I STILL HAVE THE RECEIPT). *TR

THE CONTACT HAD TO REPAIR THE FAILURE AT HIS OWN EXPENSE. AFTER THE REPAIR WAS MADE, THE DEALER INFORMED HIM OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 08V162000 (VISIBILITY:GLASS, SIDE/REAR). THE CONTACT IS CURRENTLY SEEKING REIMBURSEMENT FOR THE REPAIR COSTS AND IS EXPERIENCING THIS FAILURE WITH ALL OF THE POWER WINDOWS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 48,400.
DRIVERS SIDE POWER WINDOW HAS ALWAYS MADE POPPING & CLICKING NOISES AND IS NOW OFF TRACK AND INOPERABLE WITHOUT MANUAL ASSISTANCE. *TR

I HAVE A 2004 TOYOTA COROLLA AND MY FRONT WINDOW BROKE BEFORE THE RECALL. I CONTACTED TOYOTA DIRECTLY AND THE TOLD ME THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD OR WOULD TO ABOUT IT BECAUSE MY CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. I HAD THE GLASS REPLACED BY A AUTO GLASS CO., BUT IT WAS NOT OPERATING RIGHT. WENT TO TOY. DEALERSHIP THEY SAID REGULATOR WAS BENT BY NOT USING TOY.GLASS. I EXPLAINED THAT REGULATOR FELT LIKE IT WAS COMING THROUGH THE DOOR WHEN WINDOW BROKE. GOT RECALL NOTICE AND BOLTS WERE PUT IN BUT WINDOW ON DRIVER SIDE STILL DOES NOT LINE UP RIGHT. IT IS STARTING TO WARE AWAY MY WEATHER STRIPPING AND ALOT OF WIND NOISE COMES THROUGH. TOYOTA STILL DOES NOT WANT TO FIX THIS PROBLEM. *TR

CAR ACCIDENT:HIT A WALL AT 45M/H OR HIGHER, AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY AND FRONT PASSENGER HAD A LOT OF BRUISES ON THE CHEST, ARM, STOMACH AND PAIN FOR SEVERAL WEEKS. DRIVER HAD AND ELBOW PROBLEM WITH PAIN AND ENABLE HIM TO LIFT HEAVY WEIGHT, BECAUSE ALL THE IMPACT FORCE WAS SUPPORTED BY HIS ARMS ON THE STEERING WHEEL. *TR
I STARTED HEARING A HUMMING, VIBRATION NOISE COMING FROM MY WHEELS IN NOVEMBER 2007. I TOOK IT INTO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY REPLACED THE WHEEL BEARINGS ON THE R/F. THIS HAPPENED AGAIN AND AGAIN... JANUARY 2008 - L/F WHEEL BEARINGS REPLACED. JUNE 2008 - R/F WHEEL BEARINGS REPLACED. MARCH 2009 - R/F WHEEL BEARINGS REPLACED. THE NOISE GETS WORSE AT HIGHER SPEEDS AND MAKES ME VERY CONCERNED FOR MY SAFETY. *TR
THE BELT TENSIONER ON THIS VEHICLE HAS FAILED FOR THE SECOND TIME. VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED NEW, AND NEEDED A NEW BELT TENSIONER AT 44K. THE WORK WAS DONE AT AN AUTHORIZED TOYOTA DEALER, AL HENDRICKSON TOYOTA. THE SECOND BELT TENSIONER FAILURE WAS AT 78K AND THE TENSIONER WAS REPLACED AGAIN AT A TOYOTA DEALER, PALM BEACH TOYOTA. THE SECOND DEALER, PALM BEACH TOYOTA, FOUND A DEFECTIVE CLAMP ON A POWERSTEERING HOSE AFTER REPEATED POWER STEERING FAILURES SUBSEQUENT TO REPLACEMENT OF TENSIONER. BOTH TENSIONER FAILURES WERE PRECEDED BY OILY SPOTS ON DRIVEWAY UNDER TENSIONER UNIT AND WERE LIKELY CAUSED BY THE DEFECTIVE POWER STEERING HOSE CLAMP FOUND BY PALM BEACH TOYOTA ALLOWING LEAKING POWER STEERING FLUID ONTO BELT AND TENSIONER ASSEMBLY. *TR
DATE 10/20/2007 THIS SATURDAY MORNING AT 9:05 AM, AFTER MASS AT THE MIAMI ARCHDIOCESES, I HAD A MOST UNPLEASANT EXPERIENCE WITH MY 2004 TOYOTA COROLLA. WHEN I MOVED TO REVERSE MY CAR FROM MY PARKING PLACE, I EXPERIENCED A SUDDEN DRAMATIC INCREASE FROM THE CAR'S IDLE AND A RELEASE OF THE ACCELERATION, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO MOVE BACKWARD VERY FAST. I IMMEDIATELY PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL, BUT DID NOT STOP AND THEN, IN A FEW SECONDS TO FORWARD TO AVOID HITTING ANY PERSONS OR VEHICLES IN MY BACK IN THE CHURCH PARKING LOT. IN TOTAL ABOUT 45 FEET BACKWARD AND FORWARD, PERHAPS 30 SECONDS PLUS IN TOTAL . I THEN CRASHED ON THE WALL OF ST. MARTHA RECTORY. THE CAR WAS UNCONTROLLABLE AND THE FRONT OF MY CAR'S HOOD, FRONT DOORS WERE BADLY DAMAGED, (ESPECIALLY THE RIGHT SIDE, WHERE MY SICK WIFE SAT ) DAMAGES WITH A PRELIMINARY ESTIMATE OF $ 5864. I HAVE TWO CONCERNS: A) SUDDEN ACCELERATION WHEN CAR IS STARTED AND INABILITY TO STOP IT . B) NO AIR BAG SYSTEM DEPLOYMENT IN SPITE OF THE STRENGTH OF THE IMPACT AND HAVING THE ENTIRE FRONT BUMPER OF THE CAR DESTROYED. 2) I HAVE LOST MY TRUST IN MY PRESENT TOYOTA COROLLA CAR (I HAVE HAD ONE BEFORE AND A CAMRY, AND THEIR PERFORMANCE WAS SATISFACTORY). I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE A VERY CAREFUL INSPECTION OF OUR VEHICLE, ITS CAPACITY FOR SUDDEN UNCONTROLLABLE ACCELERATION, LACK OF AIR BAG PROTECTION, AND THE LIKE. *TR

THE DEALER STATED THAT SHE WOULD HAVE TO PAY HALF PRICE FOR THE WINDOW REPLACEMENT. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 25,532 MILES. THE PURCHASE DATE OF THE VEHICLE WAS UNAVAILABLE. WE BOUGHT A TOYOTA CORROLA MODEL 2004. SINCE WE BOUGHT IT TIL NOW, IT ALWAYS HAS A PERSISTENT PROBLEM WITH GAS TANK (GAS TANK, GAS PUMP, GAS ROD (?-PER DEALERSHIP PERSONNEL). OUR VEHICLE USED MAINLY TO COMMUTE A SHORT DISTANCE FROM HOME TO WORK AND VICE VERSA. THE ODOMETER WAS CURRENTLY ABOUT 31,000 PLUS MILES. *JB
SUMMER 2007, WITH ABOUT 65,000 MILES ON MY 2004 TOYOTA COROLLA S (BOUGHT NEW), I STARTED TO NOTICE AN UNUSUAL SOUND WHEN I SHIFTED GEARS--SOUNDED A LITTLE LIKE A DIESEL ENGINE SOUND BUT VERY FAINT. SOUND SLOWLY BECOME MORE PRONOUNCED, UNTIL IT BECAME A WORRY. IT HAPPENED WHEN I USED THE CLUTCH (IT'S A MANUAL). I BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALER TO HAVE THEM LISTEN TO IT. THEY DIDN'T HEAR IT, BUT RECOMMENDED THAT I LEAVE IT FOR SERVICE. I DID. DEALER SAID THEY FOUND NO PROBLEM. ALSO SAID THEY RARELY WORK ON MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS ANY MORE. CONCERNED ABOUT POTENTIAL SAFETY ISSUES, I BROUGHT IT TO A LOCAL MECHANIC PERSONALLY KNOWN TO ME. HE IMMEDIATELY IDENTIFIED IT AS A TRANSMISSION BEARING PROBLEM. THOUGHT IT WAS POSSIBLY THE PILOT BEARING. HE RECOMMEND I TAKE IT TO A TRANSMISSION PLACE FOR A LISTEN. THE TRANSMISSION SHOP CAME TO THE SAME CONCLUSION AS THE LOCAL MECHANIC. I REPORTED BACK TO MY MECHANIC WHO CALLED THE DEALERSHIP TO CHECK WHETHER THERE WERE ANY SERVICE BULLETINS ABOUT TRANSMISSION BEARING PROBLEMS AND THEY SAID THERE WEREN'T. I CONTACTED THE DEALER TO REPORT THE FINDINGS OF THE TRANSMISSION SHOP AND THEY SAID THAT THEY DIDN'T THINK THERE WAS A PROBLEM. I RETURNED TO THE TRANSMISSION SHOP TO HAVE THE TRANSMISSION WORK DONE AND HE REPLACED THE BEARINGS. NO MORE UNUSUAL SOUND WHEN I SHIFT. I STILL HAVE THE OLD PART, WHICH SHOWS WEAR ON ONE OF THE BEARINGS. THE DEALER WAS NOT HELPFUL IN RESOLVING THE PROBLEM. THE MANUFACTURER WAS EVEN LESS HELPFUL. THE REPAIR WAS VERY EXPENSIVE, ABOUT ~1600 (I ALSO DECIDED TO REPLACE THE CLUTCH WHILE WE WERE IN THERE). *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA COROLLA. ON JUNE 1, 2007, THE ENGINE FAILED WHILE IDLING AT A STOP LIGHT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE BATTERY WORKED, BUT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT NEVER ILLUMINATED. ON JUNE 4, 2007, WHILE DRIVING UP A HILL AND OVER A RAILROAD TRACK, THE VEHICLE FAILED TO ACCELERATE ABOVE 50 MPH. THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO SHAKE. SHE TRIED NOT TO PUT HER FOOT ON THE BRAKE IN FEAR THAT THE ENGINE WOULD FAIL AGAIN. WHEN SHE REACHED THE END OF THE HILL, SHE PULLED INTO A PARKING LOT AND THE ENGINE FAILED. SHE WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE INSTANTLY. THE CONTACT TURNED THE VEHICLE ON AND OFF FOR A PERIOD OF TWENTY MINUTES AND IN THAT TIME FRAME, THE VEHICLE FAILED EVERY THREE MINUTES. THE DEALER COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT NO ONE IS EVER IN THE VEHICLE WITH HER WHEN IT FAILS AND SHE IS AFRAID THAT SHE MAY CAUSE A CRASH. THE ENGINE SIZE WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE IS 55,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 54,980.
I HAD A RAPID ACCELERATION PROBLEM WITH MY 2005 TOYOTA COROLLA YESTERDAY. THE ENGINE RPM WENT TO ABOUT 50,00RPM. BEFORE ANY DAMAGE OCCURRED I SHUT THE VEHICLE OFF. WHEN STARTING UP AGAIN THERE SEEMED TO BE NO PROBLEM. I IMMEDIATELY CALLED THE DEALER AND AFTER CHECKING OUT THE VEHICLE THEY COULD NOT FIND A PROBLEM. *TR

THE CONTACT IMMEDIATELY APPLIED THE BRAKE AS HARD AS HE COULD, AND PUT THE VEHICLE INTO NEUTRAL. HE ALSO APPLIED THE GAS, ALLOWING THE VEHICLE TO STOP IDLING. THE VEHICLE WAS AT THE DEALER BEING LOOKED AT CONCERNING THIS PROBLEM. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 32,000.*AK UPDATED 04/30/07. *JB
I AM HAVING WHAT COULD BE A SERIOUS PROBLEM WITH MY ALMOST NEW COROLLA 2004 WITH ONLY 8000 MILES. IF I LEAVE THE CAR PARKED FOR SAY MORE THAN A WEEK, I THEN START IT, AND TRY TO GO INTO REVERSE THE CAR TAKES (LAGS) LIKE 5 OR 6 SECONDS TO SORT OF ENGAGE THE GEAR. AT FIRST IT SORT OF LIKE STARTS TO GO BUT NOT FULLY (SLIPS) AND AFTER THAT IT GOES SOLID IN TO REVERSE. I HOPE YOU UNDERSTAND MY EXPLANATION?? DEALER HAS PERFORMED THE HYDRAULIC TEST, RESET THE MEMORY, AND CHANGED THE OIL. *AK
I PULLED INTO HANDICAPPED PARKING SPACE AT A LOCAL RESTAURANT AND WHEN I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR, MY 2004 TOYOTA COROLLA UNEXPECTEDLY ACCELERATED, CAUSING MY CAR TO JUMP CURB AND PROCEED FORWARD APPROXIMATELY 30 FEET WHERE IT CRASHED INTO SIDE OF RESTAURANT. I AM FAIRLY CERTAIN I DID NOT HAVE MY FOOT ON THE ACCELERATOR AND ABSOLUTELY DID NOT KEEP IT ON THE ACCELERATOR AFTER IT JUMPED THE CURB AND PROCEEDED INTO THE BUILDING. *TR

IN 2007, A CRASH OCCURRED WHEN THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE UNINTENTIONALLY ACCELERATED AND REAR ENDED ANOTHER VEHICLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE AIR BAG DEPLOYED AFTER THE CRASH. A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED ABRASIONS AND CONTUSIONS THAT REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED NOR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000.
2004 TOYOTA COROLLA--DRIVING ON RIGHT MOST LANE AT SPEED ABOUT 25 MILES BECAUSE SNOWING HAD STARTED . DATE 02-12-2008 ON I 96 EAST NEAR INKSTER , EXIT. (-POLICE DEPT-LIVONIA, MI-POLICE. CAR WAS TOTAL WRECK WITH FRONT DAMAGE AND CHASIS BENDING OUTWARD ON RIGHT SIDE. CAR WAS TAKEN TO TROY COLLISION , TROY , MI. CITIZEN INSURANCE DECLARED " TOTAL ". THOUGH I WAS NOT INJURED , IT IS CLOSE TO WORST CRASH AND I HAD TO BUY NEW CAR SPENDING $10,000 EXTRA. I HAD NO ANSWER FOR SUDDEN ACCELERATION AND VEHICLE TURNING AND CRASHING. DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 45 MPH TOWARD AN INTERSECTION, THE CONTACT FELT LIGHTHEADED, AND COLLIDED WITH AN IMMOBILE VEHICLE AT THE STOP SIGN. THE CONTACT DEPRESSED THE BRAKES, PRIOR TO THE COLLISION, BUT WAS UNABLE TO AVOID THE ACCIDENT. THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY, HOWEVER THE SEAT BELT RESTRAINED THE CONTACT. THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT. THE CONTACT SUFFERED A STRAINED NECK. THE POLICE AND FIRE DEPARTMENT WERE PRESENT BUT THE CONTACT REFUSED TO BE TAKEN TO A HOSPITAL. A POLICE REPORT WAS TAKEN. THE OWNER'S MANUAL STATED THE AIR BAGS SHOULD DEPLOY AT A MINIMUM OF 25 MPH. THE POLICE OFFICER ORDERED THE VEHICLE NOT TO BE DRIVEN BECAUSE THE AIR BAGS COULD SUDDENLY DEPLOY. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A BODY SHOP TO BE LATER BE INSPECTED BY THE INSURANCE COMPANY. THE DEALERSHIP AND THE MANUFACTURER WOULD BE CONTACTED.
I OWN A 2004 TOYOTA COROLLA (45,000 MILES) AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED, (READ CODE P0456, EMISSION CONTROL EVAP SMALL LEAK). MY INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT THERE WERE MANY OTHER VEHICLES WITH THE SAME ISSUE AND TOYOTA HAS CORRECTED THIS PROBLEM WITH REPLACING THE FUEL FILLER TUBE AT THE OWNERS EXPENSE (APPROX. $300.00). SHOULD THIS NOT BE A RECALL DUE TO THE VEHICLE BEING ONLY 2YRS OLD AND A EMISSION PROBLEM, THAT HAS HAPPENED TO MANY OTHER CONSUMERS? I FEEL TOYOTA SHOULD STEP UP AND REPLACE PART AT NO COST TO OWNER, THE CAR IS TOO NEW TO HAVE PROBLEMS. *NM
I HAVE TWO CLAIMS ON TOYOTA COROLLA'S. EACH VEHICLE HAD A FIRE START IN THE WHEEL WELL AREA. THE DEALER IS BLAMING BRAKE FAILURE. THE FIRST VEHICLE IS AN 06 COROLLA AND THE OTHER IS AN 04 COROLLA. NEITHER VEHICLE HAS EVER HAD ANY BRAKE WORK DONE AND BOTH HAVE VERY LOW MILES. CERTAINLY THE 06 COROLLA SHOULD BE HANDLED BY TOYOTA UNDER WARRANTY BUT SO FAR THEY ARE NOT WANTING TO HANDLE THIS LOSS. *JB
2004 TOYOTA COROLLA DRIVE BELT CRACKED AT ABOUT 5K MILES I HAVE A 2004 COROLLA WHICH IS MAINTAINED REGULARLY AT DARCARS TOYOTA OF SILVER SPRING, MARYLAND. WHEN I HAD MY CAR OIL CHANGED AT MILEAGE 53200, THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE TOLD AND SHOWED ME THAT MY CAR'S DRIVE BELT HAS MANY, MANY CRACKS ON IT. THEY TOLD ME I NEED TO REPLACE IT WITH A NEW BELT AND WILL BE CHARGED $210. TOYOTA OFFICIALLY RECOMMENDS AN INITIAL INSPECTION OF DRIVE BELT AT 60K/72 MONTHS, 15K THEREAFTER. IT MEANS BEFORE 60K MILES THERE SHOULD BE FINE. I SENT AN EMAIL TO TOYOTA AND ASKED THEM IF MY CAR HAS A QUALITY PROBLEM. IN THEIR REPLY, THEY REFUSED TO ANSWER MY QUESTION. TOYOTA IS FAMOUS FOR THEIR VEHICLE EXCELLENT QUALITY, BUT IT LOOKS NOT IN MY CASE. *NM
MY DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING HER 2004 TOYOTA COROLLA FROM SAN DIEGO TO DALLAS. ABOUT 60 MILES EAST OF YUMA, AZ THE MANUAL TRANSMISSION WENT OUT IN THIS CAR. HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED BACK TO YUMA AND A WHOLE NEW TRANSMISSION REPLACED BECAUSE THE TRANSMISSION HAD GROUND ITSELF TO PIECES AND THERE WERE PIECES OF THIS IN THE TRANSMISSION PAN. ON 4 OCCASIONS, OUR 2004 TOYOTA COROLLA ENGINE HAS RACED WHILE THE CAR WAS BEING BACKED UP AND MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE MOST SERIOUS INCIDENT WAS IN A PARKING LOT WITH MANY PEOPLE MILLING AROUND TO WATCH A FIREWORKS SHOW. THE HARDER I PUSHED ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, THE FASTER THE ENGINE RAN. FORTUNATELY, THE BRAKES STOPPED THE CAR BEFORE I RAN OVER ANYONE. APPARENTLY, THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT DOWN SO FAR THAT MY FOOT COULD HIT THE GAS PEDAL AT THE SAME TIME. THE CONTACT EXPRESSED CONCERN ABOUT THE REPAIR PERFORMED BECAUSE THE RUST COULD DETERIORATE THE TUBE WHICH COULD RESULT IN A GAS LEAK.

AFTER THE REPAIRS WERE MADE, THE PROBLEM PERSISTED. THE CONTACT AFFIRMED THAT WHEN THE BRAKES WERE FULLY DEPRESSED, VEHICLE CONTROL COULD NOT BE COMPLETELY MAINTAINED, AND THERE WAS NOT SUFFICIENT STABILITY POWER.*AK

ON ONE OCCASION, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED AND STRUCK ANOTHER VEHICLE. THE OCCUPANTS IN THE OTHER VEHICLE WERE INJURED AND THE CONTACT SUSTAINED CHEST PAIN FROM THE SEAT BELT. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND THEY MADE REPAIRS. THE CONTACT DID NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING THE VEHICLE; THEREFORE, IT WAS REPLACED WITH A 2006 COROLLA. CURRENTLY, THE 2006 COROLLA IS EXPERIENCING THE SAME FAILURES AS THE 2004 MODEL. THE DEALER STATED THAT SHE COULD BRING IN THE VEHICLE AND PAY $98 PER HOUR FOR A DIAGNOSTIC.
