APRIL 2010 - TACHOMETER STARTED 'JUMPING' AROUND. CEL WOULD ILLUMINATE ON AND OFF AND THE CAR WOULD OCCASIONALLY ACT LIKE IT WANTED TO STALL AND ACTED SLUGGISH. JUNE 2010 - BROUGHT TO LOCAL SHOP THAT SAID IT MIGHT BE A COMPUTER ISSUE AND TO TAKE TO TOYOTA. TOOK TO TOYOTA, TOYOTA SAID THAT IT WAS JUST A BAD TACHOMETER AND THAT I COULD CHOOSE TO REPLACE IT. I DID NOT. CEL LIGHT CONTINUED TO GO ON AND OFF. VEHICLE WOULD SOMETIMES SHIFT VERY HARD OR SEEM TO HAVE TROUBLE. SEPTEMBER 2010 - THE VEHICLE ALMOST STALLED AT 45MPH WHEN IT SEEMED LIKE IT WAS TRYING TO SWITCH GEARS (AUTO TRANSMISSION). WHEN GOING HIGHWAY SPEEDS THE RPMS WOULD NOT GET OVER 1800 WHEN NORMALLY IT RUNS AROUND 2300 (AT 65MPH) WHEN I WOULD STEP ON BRAKE, RPMS WOULD DROP TO AROUND 1000 AND THEN TO THE POINT OF STALLING. SOMETIMES I HAVE TO DRIVE WITH THE LEFT FOOT ON THE BRAKE AND THE RIGHT FOOT ON THE ACCELERATOR TO NOT HAVE IT STALL IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC. SOMETIMES AT A LIGHT, I PUT IT IN NEUTRAL AND CONTINUE TO REV THE ENGINE. SOME DAYS THE VEHICLE SEEMS TO BE RUNNING FINE, OTHER TIMES IT IS VERY STRESSFUL TO DRIVE WHEN IT IS HAVING ISSUES. OCTOBER 2010 - RECEIVED RECALL LETTER FROM TOYOTA REGARDING THE ECM (ENGINE CONTROL MODULE) AND THAT PARTS WILL START TO BE COME AVAILABLE THE END OF NOVEMBER. CALLED TOYOTA CORPORATE AND THEY SAID THEY DID NOT CURRENTLY HAVE A FIX FOR THE PROBLEM. CONTINUE TO DRIVE THIS VEHICLE BECAUSE IT IS MY ONLY MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION. *TR
AIR BAG DID NOT DEPLOY DURING A 25 MPH FRONT END COLLISION. *TR
I HAD MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE TURNING INTO MY DRIVE WHEN SUDDENLY THE CAR ACCELERATED AND RAN INTO THE APARTMENT BUILDING WALL. I PUSHED HARDER ON THE BRAKE BUT IT WOULD NOT STOP AND WAS STILL ACCELERATING AFTER RUNNING THRU THE WALL . THE POLICE REPORT SAID IT SLUNG DIRT FROM THE FRONT TIRES, 24 FEET. UPDATED 11/22/11 *CN
MY COROLLA 2006 STALLED ON THE HIGHWAY WITH OUT WARNING. I WAS ALMOST HIT BY OTHER CARS WHILE TRYING TO GET MY COROLLA TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WITH NO POWER. IT WOULD NOT RESTART. CAR WAS TOWED TO DEALERSHIP AND WAS FOUND TO HAVE A BAD ECM. THE ECM WAS REPLACED AND WE WILL SEE IF THIS ONE WILL WORK. THIS COULD HAVE TURNED OUT BAD IF THERE WAS MORE TRAFFIC ON THE HIGHWAY! *TR

THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V285000 (AIR BAGS) AND THE DEALER INDICATED THAT IT MIGHT BE LONGER THAN SIX MONTHS TO SCHEDULE THE RECALL REPAIR APPOINTMENT. THE PARTS WERE NOT AVAILABLE WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME FRAME TO SCHEDULE THE REPAIR AND THE MANUFACTURER AS WELL AS THE DEALER WERE UNABLE TO DETERMINE WHEN THE VEHICLE WOULD BE SCHEDULED FOR REPAIRS. THE CONTACT WAS ALSO INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 10V384000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING) AND WAS TO DETERMINE WHEN THAT REPAIR MAY BE SCHEDULED ALSO. THE CONTACT WAS NOT EXPERIENCING A FAILURE. PARTS DISTRIBUTION DISCONNECT.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA. THE CONTACT WAS BRAKING FOR A TRAFFIC STOP WHEN THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO IMMEDIATELY RESTART THE VEHICLE AS IT OPERATED AS NORMAL. THE CONTACT CONTINUED DRIVING 70 MPH AS THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND THE VEHICLE STALLED A SECOND TIME. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE COMPUTER ENGINE MODULE WAS REPLACED. THE FAILURE DID NOT RECUR. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 104,296.
I OWN A 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON IN THE MIDDLE OF DRIVING BUT I DID NOT NOTICE ANY ISSUES. THE FOLLOWING DAY THE CAR STARTED SHIFTING HARD WHEN I ACCELERATED WHILE DRIVING. I TOOK THE CAR IN FOR AN OIL CHANGE AND THEY RAN A DIAGNOSTIC TEST AND THE CODE CAME BACK P2716: SHIFT SOLENOID VALVE SLT/RANGE. I RESEARCHED THE CODE AND FOUND MANY FORUMS WITH PEOPLE HAVING THE SAME ISSUES AND THE PROBLEM BEING THE ECM. I TOOK THE CAR INTO THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND GAVE THEM THE INFORMATION I FOUND ON THE ISSUES. THEY DIAGNOSED THE CAR AND I SAID I NEEDED THE ECM REPLACED. THE CAR HAS 82,000 MILES AND IS OUT OF WARRANTY. THE REPAIR IS RUNNING CLOSE TO $900, THE REGIONAL TOYOTA REPRESENTATIVE HAS OFFERED TO SPLIT THE COST. I FEEL THIS IS UNFAIR AND A RECALL SHOULD HAVE BEEN ISSUED. I ALSO HAVE A FRIEND WHO HAS A 2007 COROLLA THAT JUST TOOK HER CAR IN FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. I AM GOING TO CONTINUE TO SPEAK WITH TOYOTA IN HOPES THEY WILL COVER THE REPAIR. *TR
WHILE PULLING INTO PARKING SPACE, EXPERIENCED SUDDEN ACCELERATION, WHILE FOOT ON BRAKE . UNABLE TO STOP CAR, IT JUMPED THE CURB AND HIT A TREE. THE TREE STOPPED THE CAR, HOWEVER THE WHEELS MUST HAVE KEPT GOING, AS THERE WAS DIRT TORN UP AND SPEWED BEHIND THE TIRES. AIR BAG DID NOT DEPLOY. TOYOTA NOTIFIED. CAR TOWED TO DEALER. TOYOTA INVESTIGATION PENDING, WHICH ACCORDING TO TOYOTA MAY TAKE UP TO 2 MONTHS. TOYOTA SAID THIS 2006 COROLLA WAS NOT ON 'RECALL' LIST. THEY ALSO SAID THEY WILL INVESTIGATE BUT DO NOT EXPECT TO FIND IT TO BE THEIR FAULT, AS THEY SAID THEY HAVE NEVER FOUND THEMSELVES TO BE 'AT FAULT' WHEN THE CAR WAS NOT ON THE 'RECALL LIST'. *TR
WE BOUGHT A 2006 CERTIFIED COROLLA LE ON JUNE 19, 2010 FROM A DEALERSHIP IN NORTHERN VIRGINIA. ON AUGUST 18, 2010 MY DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING THE CAR AND WHILE AT STOP LIGHT EARLIER THAT DAY HER CAR HESITATED AND DIDN'T WANT TO MOVE. THAT EVENING AROUND 8:30 PM AS SHE WAS DRIVING HER CAR, THE ROAD CURVED SLIGHTLY TO THE RIGHT BUT SHE WAS NOT ABLE TO TURN THE WHEEL OR DEPRESS THE BRAKES. SHE CROSSED THE ON COMING LANE AND THE CAR WAS TOTALED. SHE WAS ABLE TO WALK AWAY FROM THIS WITH ONLY HUNDREDS OF SMALL CUTS FROM GLASS. THE INITIAL THOUGHT WAS THAT SHE HAD HYDROPLANED BUT AFTER FURTHER TALKING TO MY DAUGHTER SHE SAID THAT SHE TRIED TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL TO FOLLOW THE ROAD BUT SHE COULDN'T BECAUSE IT WAS TOO HARD AND THE BRAKES WOULD NOT DEPRESS EITHER. I HAD MY MECHANIC GO TO THE YARD WHERE THE CAR WAS STORED AND READ THE COMPUTER AND THIS IS WHAT HE FOUND: CHECK ENGINE LIGHT FIND P0430 EVAP SYSTEM PRESSURE SENSOR HIGH INPUT AND IN THE HISTORY HE FOUND 2 CODES: THE SAME P0430 AND B2799 ENGINE IMMOBILIZER SYSTEM FAULT. SO AS IT SEEMS NOW THE CAR DID SHUT OFF AND SHE WAS NOT ABLE TO CONTROL THE STEERING OR BRAKES DUE TO NOT HAVING POWER. I HAVE READ THAT THIS IS NOT THE FIRST REPORT OF THIS HAPPENING. SOMETHING SHOULD BE DONE BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT REALLY BAD OR THERE IS A FATAL ACCIDENT. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF BEING A CERTIFIED CAR, SHOULD THIS HAVE BEEN DETECTED BEFORE THE CAR WAS SOLD? ALSO, IS THE COMPUTER READ BEFORE THE CAR IS SOLD TO SEE IF THERE HAS BEEN OR IS A PROBLEM? IF IT IS NOT READ, THEN MAYBE IT SHOULD BE A NEW POLICY FOR THE DEALERSHIPS. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING 55 MPH WHEN THE BRAKES FAILED. THE CONTACT CRASHED INTO THE VEHICLE AHEAD OF HER. THE CONTACT STATED SHE DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL TO THE FLOOR BUT THE BRAKES FAILED TO OPERATE. THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE VEHICLE AHEAD OF HER WAS FLIPPED AND LANDED UPSIDE DOWN. THERE WAS SMOKE COMING FROM THE FRONT OF THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE. A POLICE REPORT WAS AVAILABLE. THE CONTACT WAS REMOVED FROM THE VEHICLE WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF THE FIRE DEPARTMENT. SHE SUSTAINED INJURIES TO THE NECK AND BACK WITH ADDITIONAL BRUISING. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000.
I WAS DRIVING IN AFTERNOON COMMUTER TRAFFIC IN WASHINGTON, DC, WHEN, WHILE STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT, MY CAR "HICCUPED" ONCE AND DIED. I WAS ABLE TO RESTART IT, BUT AS I DROVE THROUGH THE GREEN LIGHT, MY CAR BEGAN TO LOSE POWER, SLOW DOWN, THEN STALLED OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. I WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE CAR, BUT IT WOULDN'T GO OVER 25 MPH, THEN ALMOST IMMEDIATELY SLOWED AND STALLED OUT AGAIN. AFTER THAT, IT TOOK APPROXIMATELY 10 TRIES TO GET THE ENGINE TO TURN OVER AND THE CAR TO START ONLY LONG ENOUGH TO MOVE IT 50 FEET OR SO TO A SAFER AREA. THE PROBLEM, ACCORDING TO TOYOTA, IS A FAULTY COMPUTER (ECM) THAT THE COMPANY WAS AWARE OF BUT DID NOT DIRECTLY NOTIFY OWNERS OF. (BASED ON WHAT THE TOYOTA REPAIR PERSON SAID, THIS PROBLEM MIRRORS WHAT IS REPORTED IN NHTSA ACTION NUMBER PE09054 AND TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN TC015-07 - HARD SHIFT AND STALLING). *TR
I HAVE A 2006 COROLLA SPORT WITH 52,000 MILES ON IT. YESTERDAY IN MY WAY HOME IT STALLED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE TRAFFIC. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP. THE SERVICE MANAGER CALLED ME TODAY STATING THAT THE COMPUTER OR ECM HAD TO BE REPLACED. ACCORDING TO NHTSA ACTION NUMBER : PE09054 NHTSA RECALL CAMPAIGN NUMBER : N/A MAKE / MODELS : MODEL/BUILD YEARS: TOYOTA / COROLLA 2006 TOYOTA / COROLLA MATRIX 2006 WONDERING HOW MANY OWNERS OF THIS TYPE OF VEHICLE HAD SAME PROBLEMS, YET TOYOTA HAS NOT ISSUE A RECALL TO FIX THESE ISSUES. MY 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA IN EARLY AUGUST DEVELOPED A SHIFTING PROBLEM THAT SOUNDS LIKE THE PROBLEM I READ ABOUT IN STORIES TODAY ABOUT NHTSA'S INVESTIGATION OF COROLLAS. THE CAR'S AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION BEGAN TO SHIFT HARSHLY FROM FIRST GEAR TO SECOND GEAR. THE ENGINE WARNING LIGHT THEN CAME ON. I TOOK IT TO A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. THE DEALER REPLACED THE ONBOARD COMPUTER, UNDER WARRANTY. DEALER SAID THERE WAS A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN ABOUT THIS. THIS HAS FIXED THE PROBLEM. *TR
I HAVE A 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA THAT STARTED EXHIBITING VIOLENT SHAKING WHILE DRIVING. SHORTLY AFTER THEN CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I TOOK IT TO MY LOCAL AUTOZONE FOR A DIAGNOSTICS SCAN AND IT RETURNED CODE "P2716 - PRESSURE CONTROL SOLENOID". I DISCOVERED THAT TOYOTA CURRENTLY HAS A TSB ON THIS ISSUE (TC015-07) BUT NOT AN OFFICIAL RECALL. EVEN THOUGH NO ACCIDENT OCCURRED IN THIS CASE, THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AS THE SHAKING SLOWED THE CAR DOWN AND COULD HAVE CAUSED AN ACCIDENT HAD IT HAD BEEN ON THE HIGHWAY. OTHER PEOPLE HAVE REPORTED THE CAR COMPLETELY SHUTTING OF. *TR

THE VEHICLE WOULD ALSO BEGAN TO SHAKE WHEN SHIFTING FROM PARK TO DRIVE OR DRIVE TO PARK. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHO REPLACED THE ECU. THE ECU WAS REPLACED TWICE FOR THE IDENTICAL FAILURE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 150,000.
I WAS DRIVING 60 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY IN MY 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA (MANUAL TRANSMISSION, 40,331 ON THE ODOMETER) WHEN I LOST ALL ACCELERATION. THE CAR'S ENGINE DID NOT STOP BUT THE MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP CAME ON AND SIMULTANEOUSLY I LOST THE ABILITY TO ACCELERATE. LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO MANEUVER ACROSS THREE LANES TO THE SHOULDER; WHEN I FINALLY TRIED TO BRAKE, I HAD NO POWER AND HAD TO PUSH THE BRAKES TO THE FLOOR; WHEN I DID THIS THE CAR SHUDDERED. THE TOYOTA DEALER REPAIRED THIS BY REPLACING THE ECU (ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT/COMPUTER), CODE 0607 AT NO CHARGE TO ME. THE PART IS INCLUDED IN THE 8YEAR/80,000 MILE FEDERAL EMISSIONS WARRANTY. ACCORDING TO WHAT I'VE READ ABOUT THIS ISSUE, GLEANED FROM THE NHTSA DATABASE, MANY OTHERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM BUT TOYOTA HAS NOT RECALLED THIS DEFECTIVE PART. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN AND I URGE TOYOTA TO RECONSIDER ITS POSITION. *TR
2006 TOYOTA COROLLA- FOR THE THIRD TIME IN 3 WEEKS THE COMPUTER ECM HAS FAILED- EXTREMELY DANGEROUS IF THE CAR STALLS IN MIDDLE OF A HIGHWAY. TOYOTA KNOWS ABOUT IT, HAS A TSB ON IT. *TR
I WAS DRIVING MY 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA S ON THE FREEWAY TODAY, AND SUDDENLY, WITHOUT WARNING, THE ENGINE SHUT DOWN. I HAD NO POWER STEERING OR ABS BRAKES, AND NO CONTROL OF THE CAR. AFTER HAVING IT TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP, I FOUND OUT THAT 2005-2009 TOYOTA COROLLAS HAVE A HUGE ISSUE WITH THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE, AND THAT UPWARDS OF 5 CARS A MONTH COME INTO THE DEALERSHIP WITH THIS SAME COMPLAINT. I FIND IT RIDICULOUS THAT EVERY REVIEW I'VE READ MENTIONS THAT THIS CAR HAS THIS PROBLEM WITH THE ECM, BUT THAT NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE ABOUT IT YET. ON TOP OF THE REVIEWS, THERE HAVE BEEN NEWS REPORTS ABOUT HOW TOYOTA IS AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM, AND SAYS THAT THIS PROBLEM DOES NOT POSE AN UNREASONABLE RISK TO SAFETY. *TR
06 COROLLA STALLED @ INTERSECTION W/ CHECK ENG LITE ON- WOULD NOT RESTART-ALMOST GOT REAR-ENDED-HAD THE COMPUTER SCANNED BY A MECHANIC AND TOLD ME COMPUTER IS BAD-CAR STILL WON'T START. *TR
I HEARD ON THE RADIO THAT YOU HAVE HAD OVER 1,000 COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE 2005-06 TOYOTA COROLLAS WITH REGARD TO ENGINE CONTROL MODULES (ECMS) AND POSSIBLE STALLS. MY 2006 COROLLA STARTED TO STUTTER WHEN I ACCELERATED FROM 45 TO 55 MPH. I COULD TELL THAT ONE OF THE SPARK PLUGS WAS MISFIRING AND I WAS AFRAID THE ENGINE WAS GOING TO STALL IN HEAVY TRAFFIC. THE ENGINE DID NOT STALL, BUT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I SEARCHED THE INTERNET AND FOUND THAT TOYOTA HAD A BAD BATCH OF ECMS IN 2005-2006 , BUT DID NOT TO RECALL THEM. INSTEAD, THEY WAITED TO SEE WHICH UNITS ACTUALLY FAILED BEFORE REPLACING THE DEFECTIVE ECMS. WHEN I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP, I TOLD THE SERVICE WRITER THAT IT APPEARED TO BE A DEFECTIVE ECM. HE TOLD ME I WAS MISTAKEN ABOUT THE ECM AND THAT IT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE SPARK PLUG MISFIRING. AFTER THEY CHECKED THE CAR, I WAS TOLD THAT A PLUG HAD FOULED OUT. I WAS CHARGED OVER $500 TO REPLACE ALL OF THE PLUGS AND THE IGNITION COIL, NOT JUST THE ONE FOULED PLUG . I WAS ALSO CHARGED $120 TO CLEAN WHAT I WAS TOLD WOULD BE THE FOULED FUEL INJECTOR, BUT IT WAS LISTED AS 'INTAKE CLEANING SERVICE.' I PICKED UP THE CAR AND DIDN'T GET 2 MILES FROM THE SHOP BEFORE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. ON THE SECOND TRIP TO SHOP THEY RESET THE LIGHT AND SAID THAT THEY COULDN'T DUPLICATE THE CONDITION AGAIN. SO I TOOK THE CAR AND DROVE IT HOME. THE NEXT DAY ON THE WAY TO WORK, THE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. ON THE THIRD TRIP TO THE SHOP, THEY FINALLY ADMITTED THE ECM HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE ECM WAS FREE, BUT I AM STILL OUT OVER $620 IN REPAIRS FOR DAMAGE CAUSED BY A DEFECTIVE ECM. MY PLUGS HAD ONLY 70,000 MILES (MOSTLY HIGHWAY) ON THEM AND SHOULD HAVE LASTED UNTIL 120,000 MILES. ON TOP OF THE REPAIRS, I WASTED A LOT OF GAS. NOW THAT THE ECM WAS REPLACED, I AM GETTING 2 MORE MILES PER GALLON. *TR
MY TOYOTA COROLLA IS 4 YRS OLD WITH ONLY 18,000 MILES AND I AM HAVING THE STRAP ON THE FUEL TANK REPLACED BECAUSE IT HAS RUSTED OUT. I WAS COMING BACK FROM A TRIP THIS WEEKEND WHEN IT STARTED TO DRAG AND MAKE NOISE. THIS IS COSTING ME 331.00 FOR NEW PARTS AND REPAIR. DEAR TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE, I REQUEST PROMPT REIMBURSEMENT OF EXPENSES IN THE AMOUNT OF $656.47 INCURRED DUE TO THE MALFUNCTIONING OF THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE IN MY 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA LAST MONTH. WHILE A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP ULTIMATELY REPLACED THE ECM AT NO COST, I INCURRED RENTAL CAR EXPENSES FOR THE TIME I WAS WITHOUT MY COROLLA, AND PAID PARTS AND LABOR IN THE AMOUNT OF $521.76 TO MY INDEPENDENT MECHANIC TO INITIALLY REPLACE A TRANSMISSION SOLENOID WHICH HAD GONE BAD DUE TO THE FAILING ECM. I WILL NOT EVEN DESCRIBE THE AMOUNT OF MY TIME THAT TOYOTA WASTED BY FAILING TO NOTIFY ME, AS THE OWNER OF A CAR MODEL KNOWN BY TOYOTA TO FREQUENTLY HAVE PREMATURE ECM FAILURE, OF THIS ISSUE SO THAT I COULD RESOLVE IT AT A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP IMMEDIATELY. IN EARLY JULY I EXPERIENCED DIFFICULT AND JERKING SHIFTING OF THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION IN MY TOYOTA. I BROUGHT IT TO MY INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, WHO DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS A BAD TRANSMISSION SOLENOID (CODE P2716), AND SUBSEQUENTLY DETERMINED THAT THE SOLENOID HAD GONE BAD DUE TO THE ECM FAILING. AT THAT POINT, CONCERNED ABOUT THE STATE OF MY TRANSMISSION, I CALLED TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE AND WAS TOLD THAT THE ECM IS COVERED UP TO 8 YEARS/80,000 MILES, AND THAT IF THE SOLENOID HAD GONE BAD AS A RESULT OF THE FAILING ECM, THE SOLENOID REPLACEMENT, TOO, WOULD BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE ECM AT NO CHARGE. I BELIEVE THAT THE OUT-OF-POCKET EXPENSES I INCURRED, AS WELL AS THE CONSIDERABLE INCONVENIENCE I ENDURED, WOULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED IF TOYOTA HAD SHARED PROACTIVELY WITH ITS CUSTOMERS THE FACT THAT FAILING ECMS ARE UNUSUALLY COMMON IN COROLLAS. IF TOYOTA HAD REPORTED THIS INFORMATION TO ME, I WOULD HAVE RECOGNIZED THE SYMPTOMS DEMONSTRATED BY MY CAR, AND WOULD HAVE BROUGHT IT TO A DEALERSHIP IN THE FIRST INSTANCE TO BE FIXED. INSTEAD, I SPENT TIME AND MONEY USING A TRUSTED INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, AND LEARNED OF THE LARGER ECM PROBLEM THROUGH HIM AND THROUGH INDEPENDENT RESEARCH. *TR
ON 24 JUNE 2010 I DROVE 1331 MILES BACK FROM VIRGINIA WITH NO ISSUES. THE NEXT EVENING, MY PERMITTED 15 YEAR OLD SON WAS DRIVING MY 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA A MERE HALF MILE FROM OUR HOME WHEN MY CAR BEGAN TO SHUTTER AND LOSE POWER. THE ACCELERATOR WAS UNRESPONSIVE AND THEN THE CAR SHUT DOWN TAKING WITH IT ALL LIGHTS. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE CAR DID RESTART BUT INSTANTLY DIED LEAVING US ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AT NIGHT WITH NO LIGHTS AND UNABLE TO MOVE. FORTUNATELY I WAS WITH HIM AND WE WERE NOT IN TRAFFIC, AS HE IS INEXPERIENCED AND WOULD NOT HAVE REACTED WELL IF THIS HAD HAPPENED TO HIM ON THE ROAD UNACCOMPANIED IN ANY TYPE OF TRAFFIC. WE PUSHED THE CAR HOME THE MILE AND PARKED IT FOR THE NIGHT. THE NEXT MORNING THE CAR STARTED, RAN FOR ONE MINUTE, BOGGED AND DIED WITH THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STILL ILLUMINATED. I APPLIED A RENTED SCAN TOOL AND CAME BACK WITH A P0607 TROUBLE CODE WITH INDICATED A BAD ECU. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO TOYOTA AND WAS REPAIRED WITH THE REPLACEMENT OF THE ECU FOR $993.40. I AM OVER THE EMISSION WARRANTY OF 80,000 MILES PER THEIR TSB WITH 94,000, SO THIS IS OUT OF MY POCKET. THIS IS FRUSTRATING AS THE INTERNET IS LITTERED WITH STORIES OF THIS HAPPENING TO OTHERS. I AM GLAD THAT I MADE IT HOME BEFORE THIS PROBLEM OCCURRED AND IT APPEARS THAT TOYOTA HAS BEEN LUCKY AS WELL. THIS IS EXTREMELY UNSAFE AND OCCURS WITH NO WARNING. I JUST HOPE SOMEONE DOESN'T HAVE TO DIE AS A RESULT OF A WELL KNOWN BAD BATCH OF ECU'S, BEFORE THE PROBLEM IS FIXED BY A RECALL. *TR

2006 TOYOTA COROLLA WITH 1ZZ-FE ENGINE, LESS THEN 25,000 MILES, HAS STALLED AT A STOP SIGN/STOP LIGHT WHEN ENGINE WAS WARM. THIS HAS HAPPENED 3 TIMES IN THE PREVIOUS TWO MONTHS. THE CAR HAS ALWAYS RE-STARTED, BUT IT IS VERY UNNERVING, AND I AM WORRIED ABOUT A MORE SERIOUS FAILURE. *TR
WHILE DRIVING MY 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA S (SPORT) AT AROUND 60 MPH, THE ENGINE LOST POWER WITHOUT WARNING AND BEGAN RAPIDLY DECREASING TRAVELING SPEED TO 10-15 MILES MPH. THEN, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I ATTEMPTED TO APPLY GAS TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM, BUT THE CAR CONTINUED DECLINING IN SPEED. AFTER PULLING OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, I TURNED THE CAR OFF, AND THEN RESTARTED THE VEHICLE. THE CAR STARTED AND BEGAN OPERATION AS IF NOTHING HAD OCCURRED. I HAD THE CAR CHECKED AT AN AUTO PARTS STORE, AND WAS INSTRUCTED TO TAKE IT TO THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP. I RESEARCHED THE ISSUE ONLINE AND FOUND A PREPONDERANCE OF COMPLAINTS WITH THE EXACT EXPERIENCE TO MINE FROM OWNERS OF (2005-2007). OUTRAGED OWNERS EXPRESSED THAT IT WAS COMMON KNOWLEDGE AMONG DEALERS THAT THERE WAS ENGINE COMPUTER ISSUE, AND A SUBSEQUENT TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN WAS ISSUED WITHOUT NOTIFYING OWNERS OF THIS MATTER. I RELAYED THIS INFORMATION TO THE TOYOTA OF EASLEY DEALERSHIP. THE SERVICE MANAGER GAVE ME A LOT OF PUSHBACK ON THE MATTER, SAID I WAS 4,000 MILES OVER THEIR FREE REPLACEMENT PERIOD (8 YRS/80,000 MILES). I RESPONDED THAT THE MILEAGE WASN'T THE CAUSE IT IS COMMONLY KNOWN TO BE DEFECTIVE. FINALLY, AFTER SPEAKING MY CALL TO THE TOYOTA HELPLINE AND HIS DISTRICT MANAGER, THE PARTS MANAGER AGREED TO CUT THE FEE 50% FROM $724 TO $352. AT THIS POINT, THEY CHARGED ME $85 JUST TO LOOK AT THE CAR SO I HAD NO OTHER RECOURSE BUT TO PAY TO HAVE THEM FIX THIS SINCE THE CAR WAS BEGINNING TO LOSE ENGINE POWER IN THIS MANNER EVERY 10 TO 15 MILES. UPON LEAVING TOYOTA OF EASLEY AND RETURNING TO MY APARTMENT, I CALLED A FEW OTHER DEALERSHIPS THAT I HAD PATRONIZED PREVIOUSLY. THE RESPONSE THAT I RECEIVED FROM ANOTHER DEALERSHIP WAS BRING THE CAR IN IMMEDIATELY. THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE 2006 COROLLAS, AND EVEN IF WE CAN'T DO THIS FOR YOU FOR FREE, TOYOTA SHOULD BE ABLE TO REFUND YOU FOR THIS MATTER BECAUSE ITS SO COMMONPLACE. *TR
ABS SYSTEM ON 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA TRIGGERS TOO EASILY AND WHEN IT DOES ACTIVATE PROVIDES LITTLE OR NO BRAKING FORCE. PROBLEM CAN BE REPRODUCED ON COBBLESTONE OR BROKEN PAVEMENT AS WELL AS ON SNOW COVERED SURFACES. OTHER CARS WITH ABS DRIVEN OVER SAME SURFACE DO NOT TRIGGER ABS. I'VE DRIVEN MANY CARS WITH ABS AND BEHAVIOR OF THIS CAR DOES MATCH ANY OF THOSE. TWO PROBLEMS HERE 1- ABS TRIGGERING TOO EASILY AND 2- NO BRAKING FORCE WHEN IT DOES. ONLY REMEDY IS TO PUMP BRAKES IN THIS SCENARIO TO RESET BRAKES AND GET SOME BRAKING BACK. COWORKER HAS ;08 COROLLA WITH SAME PROBLEM. DEALER TOLD THEM, MAYBE HE DROVE THROUGH A PUDDLE. REALLY? AREN'T CARS TO BE DRIVEN IN THE RAIN ANYMORE? INTERNET IS LITTERED WITH SIMILAR REPORTS. NEED SOME FOCUS BY NHTSA AND TOYOTA ON THIS PROBLEM. NO BRAKING POWER IS A SERIOUS SAFETY PROBLEM. *TR

WHILE DRIVING OUR 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA, WITH APROX. 70,000 MILES ON IT.IN A PARKING LOT SEARCHING FOR A PARKING SPACE, WITH FOOT ON BRAKE, DRIVER TURNED TO PULL INTO A PERPENDICULAR TO DRIVE LANE PARKING SLOT. WITH FOOT STILL ON BRAKE, ENGINE SUDDENLY WENT TO FULL THROTTLE FIVE FEET FROM CURB, EVEN WITH BOTH FEET ON BRAKE PEDDLE, CAR WOULD NOT STOP. ENGINE OVERPOWERED BRAKES, CAR CAME TO A STOP AFTER HITTING CONCRETE/BRICK TWO FOOT SQUARE POLE. AIR BAGS DEPLOYED, HOOD HIT WINDSHIELD ALONG WITH AIR BAGS BREAKING WINDSHIELD INTO MANY SHARDS OF GLASS. ENGINE CONTINUED TO RACE AND FRONT WHEELS CONTINUED TO SPIN UNTIL IGNITION WAS TURNED OFF. THERE WERE NO PERSONAL INJURIES HOWEVER THE CAR WAS A TOTAL LOSS. POLICE WERE SUMMONED, PERSONAL INFORMATION WAS TAKEN, NO CHARGES WERE ISSUED. *TR

THE FAILURE RECURRED AND THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER ADVISED THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT (ECU) WAS DEFECTIVE AND WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT STATED THE ECU WAS PREVIOUSLY REPLACED LESS THAN A YEAR PRIOR TO THE FAILURE. THE ECU WAS REPLACED HOWEVER WHILE LEAVING THE DEALER, THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE DEALER THEN ADVISED THAT THE FAILURE WAS CAUSED BY THE AFTER MARKET SECURITY SYSTEM IN THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED ANY FAILURES WITH THE SECURITY SYSTEM SINCE PURCHASING FIVE YEARS PRIOR TO THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT FURTHER REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WOULD NOT PROVIDE ANY ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 58,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 58,022.
WITH NO WARNING, CAR STALLED IN MIDDLE OF ROAD, RESTARTED MOMENTS LATER WITH NO POWER, NOT REVVING OVER 2000 RPMS. 15- 20 MIN LATER WILL RUN FOR SHORT TIME, 3- 10 MILES, BUT THEN STALLS AGAIN. SQUEAK FROM ENGINE IN 3/4/08 WITH 15,800 MILES. I CAN ONLY HEAR OUT OF ONE EAR SO THIS SQUEAK WAS ONLY EVIDENT WHEN I WAS NEXT TO A BUILDING (DRIVE THRU AT BANK). NOT SCREAMING LIKE FAN BELTS TEND TO DO. TOYOTA SAID "BELT GLAZED OVER CAUSING BELT TO SLIP AT PULLEYS, REPLACED BELT, NOISE NO LONGER PRESENT AT THIS TIME." NOW AT 33,359 THE ECM HAD TO BE FIXED AND THEY SAID "THE DRIVE BELT TENSIONER AND DRIVE BELT NEED TO BE REPLACED COSTING OVER $400." THE SAME BELT THAT WAS REPLACE A LITTLE OVER 15,000 MILES BEFORE. I DID NOT HAVE THEM DO THE WORK BUT IT WILL HAVE TO BE FIXED BECAUSE IF THE BELT BREAKS THEN THE CAR IS DEAD, MUCH LIKE THE ECM PROBLEM (WHICH WAS A LARGE PAIN IN THE...). THERE WILL BE AN INCIDENT IF I DON'T GET IT FIXED. AND AGAIN I CANNOT HEAR A SQUEAK UNLESS A REALLY LISTEN OR AGAIN I PULL UP TO A BUILDING. *TR
I HAD AN ENGINE LIGHT COME ON AND THE CAR WOULD RUN ROUGH AND THE A/C WOULD NOT RUN. THEN THE CAR WOULD RUN OKAY AND THE A/C WOULD BE WORKING. I TOOK IT TO A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID I NEED A NEW EVAP CANISTER AND NEW A/C COMPRESSOR . THIS WAS PUT ON AND I BROUGHT THE CAR HOME. THE A/C WORKED TOO WELL..WHEN THE FAN AND HEATER WERE ON THE A/C KEPT RIGHT ON RUNNING. I TOOK IT BACK AND THEY REPLACED THE CONTROL AIR, COMPUTER AND STILL NOT WORKING. THEN THEY PUT ANOTHER NEW COMPUTER ON IT AND NOT WORKING. THEN THEY PULLED THE DASH AND CHECKED THE WIRING..NOTHING. THEN THEY DID REWIRING WORK, THEN THEY DID CIRCUIT WORK AND THE A/C STILL DOES NOT WORK. I WAITED FOR TWO WEEKS FOR THEM TO TELL ME WHEN AN ENG WILL COME LOOK AT THE CAR.THEY HAD THE CAR 6 OUT OF 7 WEEKS AND I FINALLY BROUGHT THE CAR HOME AND IT IS SITTING IN THE YARD..CAR IS RUNNING BUT I STILL HAVE NO A/C AND I AM STILL WAITING FOR A CALL FROM THE DEALERSHIP. NO ONE HAS EVER CALLED TO TELL ME ANYTHING AT ALL ABOUT THE CAR...I HAVE HAD TO CALL THEM . I LOOKED IN THE COMPUTER TO FIND THAT TOYOTA HAD A PROBLEM WITH THEIR 2006 COROLLA A/C BUT NEVER RECALLED. MY SON WAS DRIVING, I WAS A PASSENGER. HE PULLED INTO THE EMORY, VA POST OFFICE PARKING LOT AND BEGAN TO TURN INTO A PARKING SPACE. I WAS WATCHING HIM CLOSELY AS I WAS TEACHING HIM TO DRIVE. WE WERE GOING VERY SLOWLY WHEN THE CAR SUDDENLY LURCHED FORWARD AND CRASHED INTO THE SIDE OF THE POST OFFICE, SEVERELY DAMAGING THE BUMPER OF THE CAR. I CAN UNEQUIVOCALLY STATE THAT HE WAS BEGINNING TO APPLY THE BRAKES WHEN THE INCIDENT HAPPENED. YESTERDAY I GOT A CHECK FOR $20.46 FOR WHAT IS SAID TO BE A SETTLEMENT FOR ACCELERATION PROBLEMS WITH THE TOYOTA. I WAS TOTALLY UNAWARE OF THIS ISSUE UNTIL THIS CHECK CAME. WHY DID TOYOTA NOT CONTACT ME. WE WERE LUCKY THAT ONLY THE CAR WAS DAMAGED, AND NOT THE PASSENGERS. THE COST OF THE BUMPER REPAIR WAS APPROXIMATE $3500, PLUS I AM SURE AN INSURANCE RATE INCREASE.

4/18/10 CAR FELT LIKE IT WAS GOING TO STALL WHILE WE WERE DRIVING 4/24/10 ENGINE STALLED RIGHT AFTER IT WAS TURNED ON & THEN HALF A BLOCK AWAY AT INTERSECTION. INTERMITTENTLY MY 2006 TOYOTA MATRIX XR SUDDENLY SLOWS DOWN TO ABOUT 20 MILES PER HOUR AND WOULD NOT RESPOND TO PRESSING GAS PEDAL. WHEN THIS HAPPENS I WILL HAVE TO PULL UP TO THE SIDE AND TURN THE ENGINE OFF FOR COUPLE OF MINUTES AND THEN START. THEN IT WOULD BE FINE. IT HAS HAPPENED ON THE HIGHWAY AND LOCAL ROADS. IT COULD BE DANGEROUS IF IT HAPPENS RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF HIGHWAY. SO FAR IN THE SPAN OF LESS THAN A YEAR IT HAS HAPPENED MORE THAN FIVE TIMES. WE TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER. THEY QUOTED "P2103: THROTTLE ACTUATOR CONTROL MOTOR CIRCUIT HIGH" AND WILL COST $1085 TO FIX IT. I LOOKED UP THE WEB AND THERE WERE OTHERS WITH THE SAME ERROR CODE AND REPLACED IT BUT STILL EXPERIENCE THE PROBLEM. AFTER SOME RESEARCH ON THE WEB I FOUND THAT THERE WAS SAME SYMPTOM PEOPLE EXPERIENCE BUT DIFFERENT ERROR CODE THAT WAS COVERED BY TOYOTA EVEN WHEN THE WARRANTY EXPIRED. I WAS HOPING MY PROBLEM GETS COVERED, TOO BUT THEY INSIST NOT TO COVER IT. IF THIS PROBLEM IS A RESULT OF WEAR AND TEAR, I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH IT. BUT THIS IS CLEARLY A DEFECTS IN THE VEHICLE THAT SHOULD BE FIXED REGARDLESS OF THE WARRANTY EXPIRED OR NOT. *TR
UNINTENDED ACCELERATION. SLOWED TO A NEAR STOP AT A RED ARROW. THE CAR STARTED TO CREEP INTO THE INTERSECTION, PUSHED HARDER ON THE BRAKES AND IT DID NOT STOP THE CAR. THE ENGINE RPMS INCREASED. SHIFTED INTO N, WENT TO R FOR A SECOND THEN BACK TO N. RPMS DECREASED AND THEN THE CAR APPEARED OK. LOOK AT THE FLOOR MAT AND IT DID NOT APPEAR TO BE OUT OF PLACE. FIRST TIME WAS TODAY. DRIVING @ 60MPH WHEN THE ENGINE AND ALL ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS COMPLETELY SHUT OFF. I HAD NO POWER STEERING AND DUE TO NO POWER ASSIST BRAKES THE CAR WAS MORE DIFFICULT TO STOP. IT IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TO BE DRIVING ALONG AND HAVE THAT HAPPEN. I WAS FORTUNATE TO BE ON A COUNTRY ROAD WITH NO OTHER TRAFFIC. HAD I BEEN ON A BUSY INTERSTATE AT 70MPH IT COULD HAVE BEEN VERY PROBLEMATIC. TOYOTA HAS SAID THAT THE ECM NEEDS REPLACED AND THAT THE ENGINE CUT OFF ON THEM AS WELL WHEN THEY TRIED IT. ON APRIL 23,2010, OUR 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA SHUT ITSELF OFF WITHOUT WARNING WHILE WE WERE DRIVING. WE ONLY HAD A FEW SECONDS TO PULL OFF THE ROAD BEFORE IT COASTED TO A STOP. THE CAR WAS DOING FINE BEFORE THIS INCIDENT, AND WE HAD NO IDEA ANYTHING WAS WRONG. ON APRIL 27, THE ENGINE COMPUTER WAS REPLACED AT A TOYOTA DEALER. THE PARTS SALESMAN AND THE SERVICE RECEPTIONIST TOLD ME THAT THE COMPUTERS CHRONICALLY FAIL IN THESE CARS AND THEY KEEP ALL POSSIBLE TYPES IN STOCK TO REPLACE THEM. *TR

WHILE DRIVING MY 2006 COROLLA ON VACATION THE MOTOR STALLED AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. LUCKILY WE WERE IN A PARKING LOT AND AFTER A MINUTE OR TWO THE ENGINE RESTARTED BUT JUST WENT A FEW YARDS AND STALLED AGAIN. AFTER CHECKING THE FLUIDS (ALL OK) I WAITED ABOUT 10 MINUTES AND ONCE AGAIN STARTED THE ENGINE, THIS TIME I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE ABOUT ONE BLOCK BEFORE IT STALLED AGAIN IN TRAFFIC AND I HAD TO PUSH IT OFF THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I CALLED A TOWTRUCK AND HAD IT TAKEN TO A NEARBY TOYOTA DEALER IN SIMI VALLEY, CA. AFTER LEAVING IT THERE OVERNIGHT, THEY CALLED AND SAID IT NEEDED A NEW ECM (ENGINE CONTROL MODULE). THAT WAS REPLACED AS WELL AS SOME ROUTINE SERVICE WORK. THEY DID NOT CHARGE FOR THE ECM AS THEY WERE FAMILIAR WITH THAT PROBLEM. I CONSIDER THIS A SAFETY ISSUE AS IT RESULTS IN ALMOST COMPLETE LOSS OF BRAKES AND STEERING. *TR
I WAS DRIVING MY MOM'S 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA CE TONIGHT. I WAS STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT WAITING TO TURN LEFT. THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN, I PRESSED THE GAS PEDAL AND THE CAR STALLED AND IT WOULD BARELY MOVE AT ALL AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I WAS THANKFULLY ABLE TO GET OFF TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD WITHOUT BEING IN AN ACCIDENT. AFTER I GOT TO THE SHOULDER OFF THE ROAD THE CAR SOUNDED LIKE IT WAS ABOUT TO QUIT RUNNING AND JUST DIE OUT. I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND RESTARTED IT. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS STILL ON AND I WAS TERRIFIED ABOUT HAVING TO DRIVETHE CAR HOME, ABOUT 2 MILES FROM MY DESTINATION AT THAT TIME, BUT I TRIED IT AND WHEN I PUSHED THE GAS PEDAL, AFTER I RESTARTED THE CAR, IT DONE OKAY AND DID NOT STALL. HOWEVER, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT NEVER WENT OUT EVEN AFTER RESTARTING THE CARE. THIS IS A BIG SAFETLY RISK AND NEEDS TO BE FIXED BY TOYOTA. SOMEONE COULD HAVE HIT ME IN THE BACK END AND IT IS DEFINITELY A SAFETY HAZARD AND NEEDS TO BE RESOLVED! I WAS VERY UPSET WHEN THIS HAPPENED NOT SURE WHAT I WAS GOING TO DO. THE VEHICLE WAS COASTED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, AND TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER. THE FAILURE WAS CONTRIBUTED TO THE ENGINE SOFTWARE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED UNDER THE SERVICE WARRANTY. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WERE 26,000.
