I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE INTERSTATE WITH MY 3YR OLD SON WHEN MY CARS CHECK ENGINE LIGHT POPPED ON AND THE CAR TURNED OFF AND IMMEDIATELY STARTED SLOWING DOWN. IT WAS NIGHT TIME AND AFTER A LARGE SNOW STORM SO I WAS UNABLE TO GET OFF THE SHOULDER FULLY. LUCKILY A POLICE OFFICER CAME AND SAID I WAS IN A VERY DANGEROUS POSITION AND THAT SHE WAS GOING TO SPEED UP THE PROCESS BY CALLING A TOW AGENCY HERSELF. SHE THEN CORNERED HER CAR WITH LIGHTS ON TO ADD SOME SAFETY. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO A REPAIR SHOP WHERE THEY STATED NOTHING WAS PHYSICALLY WRONG WITH THE CAR BUT THE COMPUTER HAD DIED. I CALLED TOYOTA TO SEE IF THERE WAS ANYTHING THAT THEY COULD DO AND THEY STATED THEY WERE AWARE THIS WAS A STANDARD PROBLEM BUT SINCE THE CAR WAS OVER 80,000 MILES THAT IT WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY AND WOULD BE FULL PRICE TO FIX. I STATED THAT I FELT WHEN I PURCHASED THE CAR THEY NEEDED TO INFORM ME THAT AFTER 80,000 MILES MY CAR HAD THE POTENTIAL TO SHUT DOWN AT ANYTIME. I CAN ASSURE YOU I WOULD NOT HAVE PURCHASED IT. I HAD TO ORDER A NEW PART WHICH IS STILL NOT GUARANTEED. I FEEL THAT THIS IS A SCAM BY TOYOTA TO ENSURE THAT THEY ARE STILL MAKING MONEY ON CARS EVEN WHEN YOU TAKE THE BEST OF CARE. *TR
DRIVING ON THE ROAD AND MY ACCELERATOR DIDN'T WORK. THE ENGINE WAS STILL ON BUT WHEN I PRESSED ON THE ACCELERATOR IT DIDN'T REGISTER THAT I WAS PRESSING THE FOOT. TOWED TO TOYOTA DEALER AND THEY SAID THAT SOME ECM - ENGINE CONTROL COMPONENTS WERE DEFECTIVE AND THEY REPLACED THE ENGINE COMPUTER. DIDN'T THINK IT NECESSARY TO DO A RECALL BECAUSE IT WAS ONLY IN SOME CARS. *CN
PRIOR TO JANUARY 1, 2010 STARTED HEARING SQUEALING NOISE COMING FROM ENGINE. AT REGULAR MAINTENANCE INTERVALS BROUGHT TO THE ATTENTION OF SERVICE DEPARTMENTS AND WAS TOLD THIS WAS NOT UNUSUAL DUE TO MOISTURE BUILD UP ON BELTS. ACCEPTED EXPLANATION AT TOYOTA DEALERSHIPS. NOISE CONTINUED TO GET WORSE SO TOOK IN AGAIN ON JANUARY 17, 2010 - MILEAGE @ 50,496. TENSIONER ASSY. WAS REPLACED (NOT UNDER WARRANTY) @ A COST OF $368.18. A COUPLE OF DAYS LATER THE SAME NOISE RETURNED. CONTINUED TO BRING TO THE ATTENTION OF SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT REGULAR MAINTENANCE INTERVAL 3/27/10-MILEAGE @53,192 AND THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE NOISE I WAS HEARING. NOISE CONTINUED AND GOT WORSE - TOOK BACK TO DEALERSHIP ON 8/16/10-MILEAGE @58,411, AGAIN THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE NOISE? NOISE CONTINUED EVERY DAY - ALL THE TIME. TOOK BACK TO DEALERSHIP ON 11/26/10 - MILEAGE @61,521. THEY REPLACED TENSIONER ASSEMBLY @ NO COST AND WAS TOLD MY TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER WAS LEAKING OIL AND THE BELT TENSIONER WAS LEAKING TOO? WHAT THE [XXX]? SERVICE MANAGER SUGGESTED I CALL 1-800-331-4331 TO FILE A COMPLAIN, I DID SO ON 11/29. CASE #[XXX]. I WAS TOLD THE TENSIONER ASSEMBLY (3 YEAR/36,000MILES) WAS NOT UNDER WARRANTY AT THE INITIAL REPAIR AND THE TIMING CHAIN REPAIR IS NOT UNDER WARRANTY EITHER (5 YEAR/60,000 MILE) WHICH WILL COST ME $173.00. MY POINT HERE IS THAT TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION ALL THE RECALLS FOR TOYOTA VEHICLES -- TOYOTA CAN'T POSSIBLY HOLD THE CONSUMER TO THE WARRANTIES THEY HAVE IN PLACE. IT IS APPARENT TO ME THAT THE PARTS ARE DEFECTIVE AND I DON'T FEEL I SHOULD HAVE TO PAY ANYTHING FOR THESE REPAIRS. AS OF TODAY, I AM STILL HEARING THE SAME NOISE WHEN I CRANK MY CAR FROM THE TENSIONER ASSEMBLY JUST REPLACED ON 11/26. TOYOTA SHOULD REIMBURSE ME FOR ALL THE DEFECTIVE PARTS/LABOR/AND MY PERSONAL TIME/MILEAGE TO GET THIS REPAIR DONE AND THE REPAIR TO THE TIMING CHAIN SHOULD BE AT NO COST TO ME. THE WHEELS OF MY 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA WERE RUSTING, WHILE UNDER WARRANTY THE DEALER REMOVED THEM AND REPAINTED THEM. NOW THEY ARE RUSTING AGAIN WITH ONLY 19,000 MILES ON THE CAR. *TR
MY 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA HAS HAD SEVERAL EPISODES OF UNINTENDED ACCELERATION WHILE GOING DOWN STEEP MOUNTAINS SUCH AS THE GRAPEVINE PASS NEAR LA AND HIGHWAY 101 BETWEEN LA AND SANTA BARBARA. WHILE GOING DOWNHILL, MY 21 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER TRIED TO STEP ON THE BRAKES TO SLOW DOWN THE CAR, BUT IT SUDDENLY ACCELERATED TO 90 MILES AN HOUR AND SHE HAD SOME VERY VERY SCARY MOMENTS... WE HAVE TAKEN THE CAR TO 2 DIFFERENT TOYOTA DEALERSHIPS ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS AND CALLED TOYOTA'S CUSTOMER SERVICE NUMBER AND SERVICE SUPERVISORS BUT OUR COMPLAINTS WERE IGNORED ON GROUNDS THAT THE 2006 COROLLA WAS"NOT ON THE RECALL LIST" OR THAT THEY COULD NOT "REPLICATE THE PROBLEM". SINCE THE PROBLEM ONLY HAPPENS ON STEEP, DOWNHILL ROADS WHEN MY DAUGHTER STEPS ON THE BRAKES TO SLOW DOWN THE CAR, IT NATURALLY CANNOT BE REPLICATED ON THE FLAT SURFACES OF SACRAMENTO OR ONTARIO, CA. AFTER GIVING TOYOTA SUCH SPECIFIC INFORMATION, ONE WOULD HOPE THAT THEY WOULD TRY TO EXPLORE IT, FIX IT OR REPLACE THE CAR GIVEN THE HIGH DEGREE OF DANGER AND THE HIGH INCIDENCE OF DEADLY CRASHES IN RECENT YEARS. WE ARE VERY FRUSTRATED WITH THEIR FAILURE TO FIX THE PROBLEM OR REFUND US THE BLUE BOOK VALUE SO THAT WE COULD PURCHASE A SAFER CAR FOR OUR CHILD. THE PROBLEM REOCCUR EVERY TIME MY DAUGHTER DRIVES THIS ROUT TO COME HOME FROM COLLEGE ON VACATIONS. SHE HAS ADAPTED BY DRIVING ONLY 55 MILES PER HOUR ON THE GRAPEVINE PASS ON THE SLOWEST LANE. HOWEVER, NOW THAT WE ARE COGNIZANT OF THE PROBLEM AND HEAR ABOUT SO MANY OTHER PEOPLE WITH SIMILAR COMPLAINTS, WE ARE SIMPLY TERRIFIED AND WANT TO BUY HER A NEW AND A SAFER CAR. WE FEEL TOTALLY FRUSTRATED BY TOYOTA'S FAILURE TO ADDRESS THE PROBLEM AND BY THEIR TENDENCY TO BRUSH IT OFF DESPITE THE MANY FATALITIES. PLEASE CONTINUE TO PUT GOVERNMENTAL PRESSURES ON TOYOTA AND INSIST THAT THEY FIX THE PROBLEM RATHER THAN HIDE FROM IT AND ABDICATE THEIR RESPONSIBILITY TO THEIR CLIENTS AND OTHER INNOCENT DRIVERS. WHILE DRIVING ON A LOCAL STREET MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, WITHIN SECONDS THERE WAS NO FUEL (POWER) TO DRIVE. I PRESSED THE GAS PEDAL TO THE FLOOR BUT THE CAR WOULD NOT GO MORE THAN 5RPM, GOING LESS THAN 5 MPH, THEN CAR JUST SHUT OFF. THIS HAPPENED IN LESS THAN 20 SECONDS. I TRIED TO RE-START THE CAR BUT WITH NO LUCK. I WAS ABLE TO PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND WITH HELP PUSH THE TO LOCAL REPAIR SHOP, THEY DIAGNOSED IT AS FAULTCODE P0607 AKA "BAD ECM". THE MECHANIC CALLED THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER AND THEY TOWED THE CAR TO THERE SHOP SINCE IT WAS COVERED UNDER WARRANTY OF 8 YRS AND/OR UP TO 80,000 MILES. HOWEVER THE PART WAS NOT IN STOCK SO I HAD TO WAIT 2 DAYS. I WAS OUT OF A CAR FOR A TOTAL OF 3 DAYS AND MY LOCAL REPAIR SHOPPED CHARGED $109.00 FOR DIAGNOSED THE CAR. LUCKY FOR ME TOYOTA DEALER WAS NO CHARGE BECAUSE IT WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY 8 YRS, OR 80,000. MY CAR HAD 71,260, HOWEVER I AM STILL NOT HAPPY BECAUSE I COULD HAVE BEEN BADLY INJURED IF I WAS ON A HIGHWAY AND THIS HAD HAPPEN, OR I COULD HAVE HURT SOMEONE ELSE. I AM NOT PLEASED THAT I WAS WITHOUT A CAR FOR 3 DAYS AND INCURRED TRAVEL EXPENSES AND HAD TO PAY MY LOCAL REPAIR SHOP $109.00 WHICH I FEEL TOYOTA SHOULD COVER. THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE AS IT CAN BE FATAL. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HIS VEHICLE SHUT OFF AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT AND WOULD NOT RESTART. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A MECHANIC AND LATER TOWED TO A TOYOTA DEALER. THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE FAILURE WAS A CHIP IN THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM WHICH NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED UNDER THE WARRANTY. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 45,000. MARCH 4, 2010 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA LE. OVER THE LAST FEW MONTHS, I AM NOTICING SUDDEN ACCELERATION OF MY VEHICLE EVEN WHEN I AM BRAKING THE VEHICLE AND TRYING TO STOP IT. BEFORE ALL THESE RECALL ISSUES STARTED, I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST ME OR THE ROAD MAY HAVE SOME DOWNGRADES. BUT NOW AFTER SEEING THAT THOUSANDS OF OTHER DRIVERS ARE HAVING THIS ISSUE, I NOW FEEL MY OBSERVATION WITH MY VEHICLE SPEEDING SUDDENLY IS NOT AN ILLUSION. TOYOTA HAS NOT INCLUDED 2006 TOYOTA COROLLAS IN THEIR RECALL LIST. BUT I STRONGLY FEEL THAT THEY SHOULD ALSO BE IN THE LIST AS THERE MAY BE SEVERAL THOUSANDS OF DRIVERS LIKE ME, FEELING THIS SUDDEN ACCELERATION AND NOT REPORTING IT BECAUSE OF THE PROLONGED PROCESS. I WAS DRIVING MY 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA CE ON THE FREEWAY AT 65 MPH WHEN THE ENGINE SUDDENLY TURNED OFF. I WAS ABLE TO COAST TO THE SHOULDER TO AVOID GETTING INTO AN ACCIDENT. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THE TOYOTA DEALER AND THEY REPLACED THE ECM UNIT AND RESET THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. THE DEALER KEPT THE OLD ECM UNIT AND DID NOT CHARGE ME FOR THE WORK WHICH WAS UNDER WARRANTY. MY CAR WAS 4 YEARS OLD AND ONLY HAD 28150 MILES ON IT WHEN THIS HAPPENED. I FOUND OUT THAT THIS WAS A KNOWN PROBLEM BY CHECKING OUT THE TOYOTANATION.COM WEBSITE. *TR

THE VEHICLE RESTARTED AFTER THREE TRIES. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE HOME. THE CONTACT CALLED THE DEALER AND THE DEALER ASKED THE CONTACT TO BRING THE VEHICLE IN BUT THE CONTACT DOES NOT FEEL COMFORTABLE DRIVING THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT IS DISABLED AND WAS UNABLE TO HAVE THE VEHICLE DIAGNOSED BY THE DEALER. THE CONTACT IS CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY RISK. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 52,000. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON AND THEN THE ENGINE DIES. THIS HAS HAPPENED TWICE SO FAR AND THE ECM WERE CHANGED BY TOYOTA ON BOTH OCCASIONS BUT IT JUST HAPPENED A THIRD TIME AND I AM FED UP. *TR
DRIVING HOME WHEN CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND ENGINE SHUT OFF WHILE IN A BUSY CURVE OF A LOCAL STREET. LOST POWER STEERING ASSIST. CREATED A SAFETY HAZARD BEING THAT I WAS CAUSING A TRAFFIC HAZARD IN A CURVE. ONLY ABLE TO START ENGINE BY HOLDING GAS TO THE FLOOR, ENGINE SOUNDED LIKE A LAWN MOWER AND RAN BARELY OVER IDLE. MADE IT HOME AT ABOUT 10 MPH. NEXT DAY ENGINE STARTED BUT CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS STILL LIT. DROVE TO DEALER, ENGINE WAS SURGING AND CAR SHIFTED VERY HARD. DEALER FOUND THAT THE ECU OR COMPUTER HAD FAILED AND REPLACED IT UNDER THE EMISSIONS WARRANTY. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THAT THIS COMPUTER HAS FAILED ON MY VEHICLE. FIRST TIME WAS AT 25,939 MILES ON 08/15/07 AND THEY REPLACED THE SAME ENGINE COMPUTER THIS TIME MY WIFE WAS DRIVING THE CAR IN TRAFFIC AND IT DID THE SAME THING. CURRENT INCIDENT HAPPENED ON 12/28/09 WITH 48,874 MILES ON VEHICLE. I CAN SEE THAT THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A MORE SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE IF WE HAD BEEN PULLING OUT INTO TRAFFIC WHEN THE COMPUTER FAILED. *TR
12/26/2009 MY TOYOTA COROLLA JUST STOPPED SUDDENLY AS I WAS DRIVING ALL IDIOT LIGHTS CAME ON AND THE CAR WOULD NOT MOVE. I WAS LUCKY THAT I HAD NOT ENTERED HIGHWAY IN CENTRAL PA WITH INTERSTATE TRUCKERS USUALLY MOVING AT 80MPH.I WOULD BE DEAD. THE CAR JUST COMPLETELY CAME TO AN IMMEDIATE HALT. MY CAR WAS BROUGHT TO A LOCAL REAPIR SHOP WHO TOLD US IT WAS A COMPUTER FAILURE AND WE HAD TO TAKE IT TO TOYOTA.CALLED TOYOTA SAID THEY WERE UNAWARE OF THE PROBLEM BUT WE SHOULD HAVE CAR TOWED AND THEY WOLD LOOK AT IT NEXT DAY WE WERE TOLD THE ECM HAD TO BE REPLACED BUT WAS UNDER WARRANTY.WILL PICK UP CAR TODAY. HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL DIE BEFORE NHSTA ACTS . MY FAMILY WE WOULD HAVE DIED. *TR
DRIVING ON I-20 WEST IN GOOD WEATHER AND GOOD ROAD CONDITIONS, I SUDDENLY LOST CONTROL OF THE STEERING WHEEL AND COULD NOT SLOW THE CAR DOWN, RESULTING IN THE CAR DRIVING OFF THE ROAD AND FLIPPING OVER SEVERAL TIMES. THE CAR WAS TOTALED BY THE INSURANCE COMPANY. *TR
THIS ABOUT A TIRE CALLED RIKEN RAPTOR'S. I NOW HAVE HAD THIS HAPPEN TWICE WHERE THE TOP PART OF THE TIRE COMES OFF THE SIDE WALLS, IT HAPPENED IN AUGUST AS WELL. THE TIRES WERE PERFECTLY FINE AS FAR AS AIR GOES AS I MAINTAIN MY CAR. BUT FOR A 2ND ONE TO HAVE HAPPENED TO ME TELLS ME THERE IS A PROBLEM AND I WOULD HOPE SOMEONE WOULD LOOK INTO THIS. I FOUND A THREAD VIA GOGGLE THAT HAD MANY OF THE EXACT SAME ISSUE ON THESE TIRES. MICHILEN IS THE MFG OF THEM AND THEY JUST TELL PEOPLE ITS A CASE OF TO LITTLE AIR. HOW WOULD THEY KNOW 1ST OF ALL AND I DO KNOW IT WAS INFLATED CORRECTLY. I TRIED CALLING THE RETAILER BUT GOT NO WHERE SO TRYING HERE SO AS NO ONE ELSE GETS HURT FROM THESE TIRES. I WAS LUCKY ONLY A FENDER LINER AND MINOR BODY DAMAGE AFTER IT BLEW OF AT 65MPH. *TR
2006 COROLLA STALLS WHILE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY. I LET THE CAR REST FOR ABOUT 30 MINS. AND THEN I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE AGAIN FOR ABOUT 20 MINS. AT WHICH TIME IT STALLED AGAIN. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. ISSUE TURNED OUT TO BE A BAD ECM. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS COASTED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE ENGINE RESTARTED AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS. THE FAILURE OCCURRED INTERMITTENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE THROTTLE BODY WAS CLEANED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON A SEPARATE OCCASION. THE FAILURE WAS CONTRIBUTED TO THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE (ECM). THE PART WAS UNAVAILABLE AND ORDERED FOR THE SERVICE REPAIR. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 80,700. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 80,900. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.
CAR STALLING & ROUGH ENGINE IDLING CAUSED BY FAULTY ENGINE INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET. *TR
I HAVE A 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA, WITH INTERMITTENT PROBLEM WITH THE ACCELERATION OF THE CAR. I TOOK IT IN AND THE DEALER IS SAYING THAT THERE IS NOT PROBLEM WITH THE ACCELERATION OF THE CARE. BUT THEY SAID THERE IS A BAD THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR AND THAT IT WOULD COST WE $1200.00 TO REPAIR. (THE ACCELERATION PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED 3 OF 4 TIMES IN THE PAST 6 MONTHS. THEY ARE SAY IS CODE # P0121. THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR OUT OF RANGE. *TR
I CURRENTLY HAVE A 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA. IT FREQUENTLY SHUTS COMPLETELY OFF. SEVERAL TIMES I WAS STOPPED AT A STOP SIGN OR SIGNAL LIGHT AND IT DIES. I PUT IT INTO PARK AND IT DOES EVENTUALLY START UP AGAIN. MY HUSBAND WAS ENTERING THE FREEWAY, ON THE ON-RAMP, AND THE CAR DIED. THIS HAS HAPPENED THROUGHOUT THIS YEAR. *TR

THEY REPLACED THE COMPUTER MODULE ON MY CAR. MY CAR NOW SHIFTS ODD AT DIFFERENT TIMES A HARD JERKING AND THEN IT SHIFTS NORMALLY AGAIN. ALSO AS SOON AS MY CARS COMPUTER MODULE WAS REPLACED THE CAR ALARM BEEPS AT 1:16 AM EVERY MORNING. I AM REALLY FRUSTRATED BECAUSE MY CAR IS NOT THE SAME. I TOOK MY CAR INTO THE DEALERSHIP, THEY SAID THE ALARM WAS TOO SENSITIVE, AND THEY ADJUSTED IT. I AM CONCERNED THAT THESE PROBLEMS ARE EFFECTING MY TRANSMISSION. SUDDEN ACCELERATION AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS IN 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA - ON 11-24-09 TRAVELING SOUTH ON HIGHWAY 5 IN CALIFORNIA NEAR BUTTONWILOW AT APPROXIMATELY 70-75 MILES PER HOUR IN THE FAST LANE, PROBABLY WHILE ON CRUISE CONTROL, CAR BEGAN TO ACCELERATE, HIT THE BRAKE WHICH HAD NO EFFECT, AND IF IT HAD BEEN ON CRUISE CONTROL, IT DID NOT OVERRIDE THE ACCELERATION. I TURNED OFF THE CAR ENGINE, THE ACCELERATION STOPPED, I HIT THE BRAKE SOMEWHAT TO GET IT DOWN TO A REGULAR SPEED, PUT THE CAR INTO NEUTRAL, STARTED IT WHILE COASTING, PUT IT BACK INTO GEAR (MANUAL TRANSMISSION), AND THE CRISIS WAS OVER. THEN, ABOUT AN HOUR LATER, WHILE ON THE GRAPEVINE PORTION OF HWY 5 AFTER THE SUMMIT, IT DID THE SAME THING WITH LESSER TRAFFIC. I PUT IT INTO NEUTRAL THIS TIME, HIT THE BRAKE, SLOWED A LITTLE, PUT IT BACK INTO GEAR AND SINCE THEN IT HAS NOT OCCURRED. SEE NEXT PARAGRAPH. THE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY IS MOUNTED IN THE TOP OF THE FUEL TANK , HANGING DOWN SUBMERGED IN THE GAS. ONE OF THE POWER WIRES FROM THE PUMP ASSY. GOING TO THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR AT THE TOP MOUNTING PLATE OF THE PUMP, WAS BADLY BURNED AND MELTED CAUSING THE PUMP NOT TO WORK WHEN IT WARMED UP ALONG WITH THIS ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR. REMEMBER THIS IS INSIDE THE FUEL TANK. THIS COULD HAVE CREATED A SERIOUS EXPLOSION ! TOYOTA ISSUED A RECALL FOR "ECM" (ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE) PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH STALLING ENGINE, SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER AND ENGINE CRANKS AND WILL NOT START. I THINK SOME OF THE "ECM " PROBLEMS COULD HAVE BEEN MIS-DIAGNOSED AND WERE THIS BURNT WIRE AND CONNECTOR FROM THE FUEL PUMP. ON TOP OF THAT THIS REPAIR COST ME APPROX. $1500.00 BUT MAYBE IT SAVED MY LIFE. FOR SAFETY REASONS ALONE , THIS SHOULD BE LOOKED INTO AND RESOLVED. I OWN A 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA. ON NOVEMBER 11TH, AS I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, THE CAR STALLED. I WAS ABLE TO COAST THE CAR TO THE SHOULDER OF THE HIGHWAY AND HAD IT TOWED TO THE NEAREST TOYOTA DEALER. THE COMPUTER, THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE, HAD TO BE REPLACED. AT THE TIME OF THE FAILURE I HAD APPROXIMATELY 81,000 MILES ON MY CAR AND THE WARRANTY COVERED THE COMPUTER UP TO 80, 000 MILES. THE ENGINE WAS RACING AND I FLOORED THE BRAKE AND THREW THE CAR INTO NEUTRAL TO AVOID A HUGE CRASH INTO THE VEHICLES IN FRONT OF ME. I BOUGHT THE CAR NEW IN 2006 AND THE COMPUTER HAS HAD TO HAVE TWO REPLACEMENTS. THE CAR WOULD NOT RUN WITHOUT WARNING AND HAS HAD TO BE TOWED. ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2009, MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON IN MY 2006 TOYOTA COROLLA LE. ONCE THE LIGHT CAME ON, THE CAR HAD A "HARD SHIFT". ON FRIDAY OCTOBER 30, 2009, I TOOK THE CAR TO THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND HAD THE DIAGNOSTICS RUN, WHICH INDICATED A FAULTY P2716 PRESSURE CONTROL SOLENOID "D" ELECTRICAL. THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE TOLD ME THAT I NEEDED TO HAVE THE COMPUTER REPLACED ($900) AND THAT THE CAR COULD SHUT OFF ON ME WHILE IN OPERATION IF I DID NOT. AFTER I HAD IT REPLACED, I LOOKED IT UP ON THE INTERNET. TURNS OUT THAT TOYOTA WAS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM BASED ON A 9/2006 SERVICE BULLETIN, BUT CHOSE TO NOT ISSUE A RECALL. I HAVE A 110 MILE ROUND TRIP COMMUTE DAILY AND AFTER READING HUNDREDS OF POSTING FROM OTHERS THAT HAVE ENCOUNTERED THIS PROBLEM, I COUNT MYSELF LUCKY. MANY OTHERS HAVE HAD THE CAR STOP ON THEM GOING 70 MPH ON THE INTERSTATE. I WAS LUCKY, BUT IT COULD HAVE TURNED OUT DEADLY. THERE ARE INCIDENTS OF ACCIDENTS OCCURRING DUE TO FAULTY P2716'S. CAR WAS TOWED THE LAST 2-3 MILES. DEALER SAID A NEWER FIRMWARE VERSION WAS REQUIRED. PRINT-OUT SAID THE ECM WAS REPLACED. THIS WAS DONE WITHOUT CHARGE AND DEALER WAS COOPERATIVE. TOYOTA WAS NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM, YET REFUSES TO RECALL THIS PART SAYING THAT IT IS NOT A "SAFETY ISSUE." I PERSONALLY KNOW OF OTHER DRIVERS WHO HAVE INCURRED THE SAME PROBLEM IN THEIR VEHICLES. I ALSO WAS TOLD BY THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT THAT THE RESPONSE IS DIFFERENT IN CARS WITH A MANUAL TRANSMISSION, WHICH IS WHAT WE OWN. KNOWING THE DETAILS OF THE CASE, THE COMPANY STILL REFUSED TO OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE, EVEN THOUGH THE REPAIR CALLS FOR A TOTALLY DIFFERENT PART, AND THAT THE OLD PART IS DEFECTIVE. WHEN DRIVING OVER 60 MPH THE CAR WILL RANDOMLY PULL BACK AND FORTH ACROSS THE LANE. IT WILL ONLY DO IT FOR SOME TIME AND THEN STOP. THIS MAKES IT HARD TO STEER THE CAR AND I MUST SLOW DOWN UNTIL IT STOPS. SOMETIMES I CAN BARELY MAINTAIN THE SPEED LIMIT ON FREEWAYS WHEN THIS OCCURS. I AM AFRAID THAT IT WILL CAUSE AN ACCIDENT ONE DAY. NO REPAIRS HAVE BEEN MADE BECAUSE THIS IS NOT A CONSISTENT PROBLEM THAT CAN BE SHOWN TO A MECHANIC. I HAVE EVEN HAD IT CHECKED OUT BY A MECHANIC BUT HE DIDN'T ENCOUNTER THE PROBLEM. SINCE THE CAR IS STILL RELATIVELY NEW, I WAS ASTONISHED TO FIND THAT THE "BRAIN" OF THE CAR IS OUT OF ORDER AND HAS TO BE REPLACED. WHAT'S WORSE IS THAT THIS PROBLEM COULD CAUSE HIGHLY DANGEROUS SITUATIONS WHERE THE CAR'S ENGINE STALLS IN THE MIDDLE OF A HIGHWAY WHILE DRIVING AT 65 MPH. MANY PEOPLE COMPLAIN ABOUT THE SAME PROBLEM ON THE INTERNET AND DESCRIBE SUCH CASES WHERE EITHER THE CAR'S ENGINE DIES IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD, OR THE CAR LEAVES PEOPLE IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE AND WON'T START AT ALL (HTTP://WWW.TOYOTANATION.COM/FORUM/SHOWTHREAD.PHP?T=201631). INFORMATION ON THE INTERNET SUGGESTS THAT FAULTY SOLENOIDS ON THE ECM BOARD ARE CAUSING THE COMPUTER TO GO CRAZY. GIVEN THE SEVERITY OF THE PROBLEM, I DON'T BELIEVE THAT TOYOTA SHOULD BE LEAVING ALL COROLLA AND MATRIX DRIVERS GET STUCK ON THE ROAD BEFORE REPLACING THE FAULTY PARTS. I BELIEVE THAT FOR ANY SUCH ROAD HAZARDOUS SITUATIONS WHERE THE MANUFACTURER ACKNOWLEDGES THAT FAULTY PARTS WERE INSTALLED SHOULD RECALL ALL AFFECTED MODELS AND REPLACE THEM ACCORDINGLY. SINCE THIS IS THE FIRST TIME SUCH THING HAS HAPPENED TO ME, I AM NOT SURE WHAT THE PROCEDURES ARE BUT JUST WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW ABOUT MY EXPERIENCE SO THAT YOU DECIDE WHAT'S APPROPRIATE. ON 3, AUGUST 2009, I DROPPED OFF MY TOYOTA COROLLA, YEAR 2006, TO POWER TOYOTA, IRVINE, CA DUE TO THE VEHICLE ABRUPTLY LUNGES FORWARD WHEN ACCELERATOR PEDAL IS BARELY TOUCHED. WHEN I PICKED UP THE CAR, THE VEHICLE STILL LUNGES FORWARD WHEN BARELY TOUCHING GAS PEDAL. THUS, IMMEDIATELY BROUGHT THE CAR BACK TO SERVICE, ASKED TO HAVE THE ISSUE LUNGING FORWARD LOOKED AT AGAIN. POWER TOYOTA SERVICE TEAM ASSIGNED A MECHANIC TO RIDE ALONG WITH ME FOR A TEST DRIVE. DURING THE TEST DRIVE, THE MECHANIC AGREED THE LUNGING FORWARD FROM A DEAD STOP IS NOT NORMAL AND WE DROVE BACK TO POWER TOYOTA FACILITY. ONCE ARRIVED AT TOYOTA, THE MECHANIC WENT TO TALK TO HIS SUPERVISOR AND A DIFFERENT MECHANIC CAME OUT AND LOOKED AT THE CAR. THE SECOND MECHANIC STATED 'THIS IS NORMAL FOR TOYOTA', DISMISSING THE FIRST MECHANICS OBSERVATIONS. I ASKED FOR THE FIRST MECHANIC, THE SECOND MECHANIC STATED 'THE MECHANIC (FIRST) IS NOT AVAILABLE. IF I WISH, I COULD HAVE THE ELECTRONIC ACCELERATOR PARTS REPLACED, BUT I WILL NEED TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR/SERVICE AND THE EXPENSE WILL NOT BE COVERED BY TOYOTA. RECENTLY I CONTACTED POWER TOYOTA TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT TO HAVE MY VEHICLE'S ACCELERATOR SYSTEM INSPECTED, POWER TOYOTA SAID 'SINCE THE VEHICLE IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL, I WILL NEED TO CONTACT TOYOTA'S CONSUMER DEPARTMENT, POWER TOYOTA CANNOT DO ANYTHING'. THUS, CONTACTED TOYOTA CONSUMER DEPARTMENT AND VERBALLY MADE A COMPLAINT ON SAID ISSUE. 'VEHICLE ABRUPTLY LUNGES FORWARD WHEN THE ACCELERATOR PETAL IS BARELY TOUCHED. WITH RECENT INFORMATION RELEASED BY TOYOTA ON COROLLA ACCELERATOR SYSTEMS (OTHER TOYOTA MODELS ARE INCLUDE) AND RECALLS. I AM FORMALLY ASKING TOYOTA MOTOR SALES SERVICE DEPARTMENT TO CRITICALLY INSPECT MY VEHICLE'S ACCELERATOR'S ELECTRONIC AND MECHANICAL SYSTEM AND REPLACE ALL PARTS IN QUESTION, TO ENSURE OCCUPANTS SAFETY.
