The rear fuel tank mounting strap rusted in half. After filling vehicle with fuel and driving 10 miles home, I noticed the skid plate hanging down that covers the fuel tank. The plastic skid plate started to crack from the weight of the tank. The design of the skid plate to the tank allows moisture and contaminants to reside between the two, rotting the straps. Thankfully I noticed this as if I had kept driving I fear the tank would have completely fallen out of the vehicle. I ordered new straps and hardware, but during the parts search I found many owners of the Toyota FJ, all years, are having the same problem. Apparently the straps are just mild steel and were not treated with any corrosion preventative from the factory. I feel they should have been at least stainless steel. Part numbers for the straps are 77602-35050 and 77601-35110. I'll have photos once the parts come in and I take the vehicle apart. Currently I have a floor jack holding up the tank. Also to clarify, the skid plate is mounted to the fuel tank straps. Once both straps let go, the fuel tank is coming out with the skid plate. The fuel tank is located in front of the rear axle, the vehicle would run over it's own fuel tank, at least until the engine shuts off.
No proper rust protection causing corrosion and irreparable transmission damage.
The frame has rusted so badly it no longer is road safe and the frame needs to be replaced. Large hole in frame on front passenger side, and bad rusting all over. Mechanics said this is a known issue with FJ and Tacoma frames , and in my case the only solution is to replace the frame, which will cost (with associated work) $22K.
The frame has alot of rust on metal and on welds affraid of frame failing and coming apart.
Owner of a 2010 FJ Cruiser. The amount of corrosion on the frame and components is very high for the age of the vehicle, it leads to significant safety concerns (Including gas tank straps are corroded). Toyota should rectify this issue as it seems like they did a poor job on this model to isolate against rust the frame. There should be a Recall for a re-treatment of the frame (Just like they did on the Tundra and Tacoma models).
The contact owns a 2010 Toyota FJ Cruiser. The contact stated while driving at various speeds over speed bumps, the vehicle would shake abnormally and was not stable while driving. The contact stated there was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed with the rear axle needing to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 66,731.
Single Toyota 2010 FJ Cruiser Owner. Over the last 10/11 have been really diligent taking care of my truck, unfortunately due to what seems very poor quality steel or treatment of the frame and some parts when was build by Toyota, it has cause severe rust/rotten issue leading not only to significant safety concerns (broken gas tank straps and fuel lines) but also a significant amount of money spend treating the frame and part to prevent further corrosion that could\will eventually lead to complete failure.
WHILE VIEWING THE UNDERCARRIAGE OF THE VEHICLE I NOTICED EXCESSIVE FRAME AND STRUCTURAL RUST AND CORROSION ON A MAJORITY OF THE FRAME, SUSPENSION, FUEL TANK STRAPS, AND OTHER METAL PARTS OF THE VEHICLE.
CATASTROPHIC FRAME FAILURE FROM DELAMINATION AND RUST HOLES IN FRAME AND GAS TANK STRAPS, AND SUSPENSION COMPONENTS.
OWN A 2010 TOYOTA FJ CRUISER. THE FRAME IS COVERED IN RUST. I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS AND KNOW THIS IS AN ON GOING PROBLEM WITH THESE VEHICLES. TOYOTA SHOULD BE DOING SOMETHING ABOUT THIS. WE FOUND EVEN MORE RUST RECENTLY ONCE WE HAD A CHANGE TO GET UNDER THE VEHICLE. NO CAR I HAVE OWNED AT THIS MUCH RUST ON IT IN SUCH A SHORT TIME.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA FJ CRUISER EQUIPPED WITH FOUR GOODYEAR TRAILMARK AT TIRES, SIZE: P265/65/R18 (NA). THE CONTACT INDICATED THAT ALL FOUR TIRES EXPERIENCED SIDEWALL RUBBER SEPARATION AND CRACKED. THE FAILURE CAUSED THE TIRES TO DEFLATE APPROXIMATELY 1 TO 2 LBS PER WEEK. WALMART INSPECTED THE TIRES AND DID NOT IDENTIFY A DEFECT. THE MANUFACTURER WAS ALSO NOTIFIED AND REFERRED THE OWNER TO A DEALER. THE TIRE AND VEHICLE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 5,000. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN.
FRAME AND GAS STRAP RUST. POSSIBLE SAFETY HAZARD WITH RUSTING. NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED WITH TOYOTA.
UNDERCARRIAGE OF 2010 FJ CRUISER RUSTED. FRONT BRAKE LINES RUSTED OUT AND I LOST FLUID. COULD HAVE GOTTEN KILLED. THANK GOD ONLY GOING 25 MPH NEAR HOME
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA FJ CRUISER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE SEAT BELT DID NOT RETRACT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO PLAZA TOYOTA (347-554-6090, LOCATED AT 2721 NOSTRAND AVE, BROOKLYN, NY 11210) WHERE IT WAS STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THE CONTACT WOULD BE CALLED BACK. THE CONTACT WAS NOT CALLED BACK. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 70,000.
WHEN APPROACHING AN INTERSECTION TO TURN OR STOP, WITH BRAKES APPLIED, AND VEHICLE ENCOUNTERS A POT HOLE OR BROKEN PAVEMENT, BRAKE PEDAL GOES TO THE FLOOR AND VEHICLE LOSES BRAKES. THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS. OTHER DRIVERS OF THE SAME MODEL VEHICLE HAVE ENCOUNTERED SAME ISSUE ACROSS MULTIPLE YEAR MODELS.
I WENT TO THE POST OFFICE CAME OUT AND MY SEAT BELT WAS FROZEN UP WONT MOVE AT ALL HAD TO DRIVE ALL THE WAY HOME WITH NO SEAT BELT ON STILL CANT GET IT TO WORK
REVIEW MIRROR FAILING TO AUTOMATICALLY DIM UNDER ANY LIGHTING, INCLUDING SUN, DIRECTLY ENTERING THROUGH THE REAR WINDOW OF THE VEHICLE. THIS HAS ALWAYS BEEN LIKE THIS, IT IS JUST WITH THESE NEW HIGH-INTENSITY LIGHTS ON THE NEW, 2016-2019, THAT IT HAS BECOME MORE OF A HAZARD AT NIGHT. THIS OCCURS ON ALL ROADWAYS.
WEAK TORQUE CONVERTER IN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. CAUSES SHAKING BETWEEN 35-45 MPH AND EVENTUALLY RESULTS IN REPLACEMENT OF TRANSMISSION.
PASSENGER AIRBAG COVER IS WARPED AND IS GETTING WORSE. POSSIBLE DEPLOYMENT OF PASSENGER AIRBAG IS POSSIBLE AND CAN CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. THIS SAFETY ISSUE IS DUE TO DEFECTIVE SRS PASSENGER AIRBAG COVER. COMPLAINTS ARE HIGH IN NUMBER AS SEEN ON 'FJ FORUMS' WEBSITE AS WELL. *TR
THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN MY DRIVE WAY. SQUIRRELS CHEWED THE WIRING HARNESS CAUSING LOSS OF ABS BRAKING, STABILITY CONTROL AND LOSS OF WINDSHIELD WIPERS (DURING A RAIN). I UNDERSTAND TOYOTA USES FOOD BASED INSULATION IN THE 2010 FJ CRUISER. A NICE SOURCE OF SQUIRREL FOOD. FROM THE BARE WIRES AND SQUIRREL NESTING, IT IS A WONDER MY ENGINE COMPARTMENT DIDN'T CATCH FIRE. I BELIEVE THE SQUIRREL NEST BUILDING WAS DUE TO THE CLOSE FOOD SOURCE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA FJ CRUISER. WHILE DRIVING BETWEEN 50-60 MPH, THERE WAS AN ABNORMAL VIBRATION IN THE STEERING WHEEL. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VIBRATION MADE THE VEHICLE UNCONTROLLABLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO MILLER TOYOTA (LOCATED AT 8566 SUDLEY RD, MANASSAS, VA 20110, (703) 369-3040) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THERE WAS A BENT WHEEL; HOWEVER, REPLACING IT WOULD NOT REMEDY THE ISSUE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 48,000.
VEHICLE SHAKES VIOLENTLY AT SPEEDS BETWEEN 50-60 MPH. HAVE HAD TIRES BALANCED, ALIGNED AND EVEN HAD TOYOTA DEALERSHIP DO A HIGH-SPEED BALANCE. HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR AT LEAST 3 YEARS. TRUCK IS DIFFICULT TO CONTROL AT TIMES DUE TO THE SHAKING.
WOKE UP AND FOUND MY WINDSHIELD CRACKED FROM THE BOTTOM DRIVER'S SIDE CORNER TO THE MIDDLE OF THE WINDSHIELD. UPON CLOSER INSPECTION, IT APPEARS THAT IF IT WAS CAUSED BY ANYTHING STRIKING IT, IT WAS MOST LIKELY A LARGE BUG. THE SUSPECTED POINT OF IMPACT WAS NOT PITTED AND THE GRIME AT THAT POINT RUBS AWAY EASILY. I WAS TOLD BEFORE BUYING THIS VEHICLE THAT THE WINDSHIELD HAS BEEN REPLACED ONCE ALREADY. TALKING WITH OTHER FJ CRUISER OWNERS, I FOUND OUT THAT CRACKED WINDSHIELDS ON THESE VEHICLES ARE FAIRLY COMMON AND IT WAS SUGGESTED THAT I FILE A COMPLAINT HERE. HOPEFULLY IN THE LONG RUN, SOMETHING WILL BE DONE ABOUT THIS RECURRING ISSUE. THANK YOU FOR READING. *TR

THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH, THE CONTACT CRASHED INTO THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE OF ANOTHER VEHICLE AND THE DRIVER'S SIDE AIR BAG DEPLOYED BUT DEFLATED. THE PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG ALSO DEPLOYED. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED NECK, HEAD, SPINE, HAND AND KNEE INJURIES. THE PASSENGER SUSTAINED BACK INJURIES THAT REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 61,000.
I WOULD LIKE TO NOTE THAT THIS WAS THE THIRD INCIDENT IN OVER A TWO YEAR PERIOD. THE FIRST TWO INCIDENTS I DISMISSED AS DRIVER ERROR BUT NOW I AM CERTAIN THAT THIS WAS NOT THE CASE. THIS IS CERTAINLY A VEHICLE DEFECT, AND A DANGEROUS ONE AT THAT. HERE IS WHAT HAPPENED: I WAS AT A FULL STOP AT A RED LIGHT. ON GREEN, I ACCELERATED VERY SLOWLY AS I WAS TAKING A 90 DEGREE LEFT TURN. AT THE EXIT OF THE TURN THERE WAS A METAL PLATE (MAYBE A MANHOLE COVER OR OTHER UTILITY TYPE COVER) WHICH WAS PART OF THE ROAD. I PASSED OVER THIS OBJECT, LIKE ALL OTHER TRAFFIC DOES, ABOUT THE SAME TIME AS I STARTED APPLYING MY BRAKES TO SLOW DOWN (I THINK I BRAKED IMMEDIATELY AFTER...NOT SURE). I HAD A SUDDEN FEELING THAT THE ABS BRAKE SYSTEM WAS ON AND THE TRUCK WAS NOT SLOWING NEARLY AS FAST AS REQUIRED. THE BRAKES CLEARLY FELT AS THEY FAILED. ANOTHER LIGHT LAY RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME. HAD THERE BEEN TRAFFIC, I WOULD HAVE REAR ENDED THE PERSON AND BEEN AT FAULT. ON THE PREVIOUS OCCASION, I FELT THE SAME EXPERIENCE. AT THAT TIME I REACTED BY LIFTING MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE, AND IT RESTORED BRAKING POWER. AGAIN, FORTUNATELY, NO ONE WAS IN FRONT SO I DID NOT COLLIDE. HOWEVER, BOTH TIMES MY STOPPING DISTANCE INCREASED DRAMATICALLY AND UNSAFELY. WEATHER CONDITIONS AT BOTH OF THESE TIMES WAS DAYTIME, CLEAR, DRY, AND TEMPERATURES SAY IN THE 30-40S. THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO ICE, RAIN, SAND, OR SNOW. BRAKE ISSUE COMES ON, IT SEEMS, WITH A SUDDEN WHEEL HOP OR LOSS OF TRACTION, ALMOST IN TANDEM. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS ISSUE AND I AM EXTREMELY CONCERNED, AS I FEEL MY LIFE IS LITERALLY AT STAKE. I LOVE MY FJ CRUISER AND IT IS MAINTAINED BY TOYOTA AND TAKEN CARE OF EXTREMELY WELL. FJ RAN OFF THE ROAD AND HIT A TREE HEAD ON WITHOUT BRAKING. RIPPED THE FRAME IN HALF AND SPLIT A WHEEL IN HALF COMPLETELY IN TWO PIECES. GREATER THAN 17000 DOLLARS IN DAMAGE. FJ TOTALED OUT. AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY AND PASSENGER SUSTAINED A BROKEN COLLAR BONE. WHY DID AIR BAGS NOT DEPLOY? *TR
UPON OPENING THE CAR DOOR ON THE MORNING OF 4/7/14, I DISCOVERED THAT SOMETIME BETWEEN THE EARLY MORNING HOURS OF APRIL 5 AND THE MORNING OF APRIL 7 THE INTERIOR CAUGHT FIRE. IT HAD BURNED ITSELF OUT BY THE TIME I DISCOVERED IT. DAMAGE TO THE 2 FRONT SEATS, THE CENTER CONSOLE AND ALL 4 WINDOW VISORS. INTERIOR OF VEHICLE IS COVERED WITH BLACK RESIDUE. THE FIRE APPEARS TO HAVE ORIGINATED IN OR NEAR THE CONSOLE BETWEEN THE 2 FRONT SEATS. THERE IS NO ELECTRICAL INPUTS IN THIS AREA (I.E. MP3 SLOT, ETC). THERE WERE NO COMBUSTIBLE MATERIALS PRESENT THAT TO MY KNOWLEDGE COULD HAVE IGNITED. CAUSE OF FIRE UNKNOWN. NO PREVIOUS ISSUES WITH THE CAR. *TR
THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG COVER HAS WARPED AND IS PEELING AWAY FROM THE DASH. *TR
WHEN BRAKING AT FREEWAY SPEEDS (ANYTHING ABOVE 60) THE CAR VIBRATES, MOST APPARENT IN BRAKE PEDAL AND SEVERE VIBRATION IN THE STEERING WHEEL. FIRST STARTED HAPPENING WHEN THE CAR WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY, BUT AFTER SEVERAL MONTHS WITH THIS PROBLEM, WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED. LOOKED ON THE INTERNET AND CAME TO DETERMINATION THAT FRONT BRAKE ROTORS WERE PREMATURELY WARPED - SOMEONE ELSE WITH FJ CRUISER HAD THE SAME ISSUE. VIBRATION WORSENS WITH HIGHER SPEED CONDITIONS. COULD LEAD SOMEONE TO LOSE CONTROL OF CAR OR HIT SOMETHING IN EMERGENCY BRAKING CONDITION. TOOK MY CAR IN FOR RECALL ON SEAT-BELT AND HAD THE DEALER LOOK AT THE BRAKES TOO. DEALER INDICATED THAT SUFFICIENT BRAKE PADS EXISTED AT BOTH FRONT AND BACK, BUT FRONT ROTORS WERE WARPED. I HAD FRONT BRAKE JOB (REPLACE PADS AND MACHINE ROTORS) AT A COST OF $249.77. IN MY OPINION, THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AND SHOULD BE CORRECTED BY TOYOTA MOTOR COMPANY AT THEIR EXPENSE. *TR
2010 TOYOTA FJ CRUISER; THE HOOD LATCH KEEPS RELEASING THANKS TO THE SAFETY CATCH IT HASN'T OPENED ALL THE WAY YET. THIS HAS HAPPENED THREE (3) TIMES ALREADY ON THE HIGHWAY I AM GOING TO HAVE TO TIE IT DOWN I CANT FIGURE WHAT IS WRONG WHY IT STAYS SHUT FOR SOME TIME THEN JUST HAPPENS TO OPEN AND I CAN SEE THE HOOD BOUNCE UP AND DOWN.THIS COULD CAUSE A REAL PROBLEM IF THE SAFETY CATCH FAILS AS WELL? *TR
AN UNDETECTABLE LEAK IN THE BODY OR DOOR OF OUR VEHICLE IS ALLOWING RAIN WATER TO ACCUMULATE INSIDE THE DOOR. THE WATER SATURATES THE PASSENGER SEAT BELT AND IS COMPROMISING THE INTEGRITY OF THE WEBBING. *TR

THIS VEHICLE CAN NOT MAINTAIN SAFE HIGHWAY SPEEDS OF 55 MPH DUE TO SEVERE WHEEL SHIMMY. I HAVE ASK DAY TOYOTA, AND SPITZER TOYOTA AND I GET THE SAME RESULTS, NOTHING CAN BE DONE. I HAVE BEEN TOLD IT IS THE TIRES. I HAVE REPLACE BOTH WHEEL AND TIRES AND HAVE THE SAME RESULT. I HAVE DONE RESEARCH ON TOYOTA FORUMS AND THE 2010 AND NEW TOYOTA FJ CRUISERS ARE HAVING A PROBLEM, AND TOYOTA WILL NOT DO ANYTHING ON THIS SAFETY ISSUE. I HAVE A COPIED A POST I FOUND REGARDING 2007 FJ'S, AS I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY '07 FJ, AND AFTER 6 MONTHS OF REPAIRS AND NO SOLUTIONS, I TRADED IT IN FOR A 2010 FJ, AND NOW I'M HAVING THE SAME EXACT PROBLEMS, AS DESCRIBED BELOW: I HAVE A 2007 TOYOTA FJ. THE STEERING SEEMS TERRIBLY WEAK AND UNPREDICTABLE. I'VE HAD THE WHEELS ALIGNED THREE TIMES, BUT THE PROBLEM CONTINUES. TOYOTA SAYS THE THERE IS NO ISSUE BUT THAT THE STEERING ON THIS STYLE VEHICLE IS JUST SENSITIVE. WHILE I REALLY ENJOY THE VEHICLE, I'M ALWAYS ON FULL ALERT WHEN DRIVING KNOWING THAT AT ANY GIVEN TIME, THE STEERING MAY SUDDENLY TAKE THE VEHICLE LEFT OR RIGHT WITH NO PREDICTABILITY. I HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED A NEWER VEHICLE THAT REQUIRES SO MUCH ATTENTION TO THE STEERING. IT MAY GO LEFT OR RIGHT WHEN THE ROADWAY SURFACE CHANGES, WHEN ENCOUNTERING UNEVEN ROADWAY SURFACES, WHEN TRANSITIONING FROM WET TO DRY OR ICE TO CLEAR PAVEMENT, OR FOR SEEMINGLY NO REASON AT ALL. OFTEN I FIND MYSELF ACTUALLY COUNTER STEERING (INPUTTING OPPOSITE TENSION ON THE WHEEL) TO KEEP THE VEHICLE FROM GOING LEAVING THE LANE I'M TRAVELING IN. IT IS VERY UNPREDICTABLE WHILE CHANGING LANES. AS I BEGIN A SLOW MOVE TO AN ADJACENT LANE, THE STEERING MAY SUDDENLY JUST PULL ME OVER TO WHICH I THEN HAVE TO COUNTER STEER TO KEEP FROM GOING TOO FAR. I TOOK MY 2010 FJ TO A TOYOTA DEALER WHERE I BOUGHT IT HERE IN ABQ, AND THEY SAID THEY COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG, OF COURSE. THEY SAID THEY WOULD FILE A COMPLAINT WITH TOYOTA HEADQUARTERS AND SENT ME ON MY WAY. WITH MY '07 FJ I HAD THE FRONT BRAKES DONE, ALL NEW LUG NUTS, NEW TIRES, NEW SHOCKS AND STRUTS, 7 ALIGNMENTS, AND 3 ROTATION AND BALANCES (ON THE NEW TIRES), ALL WITHIN ONLY SIX MONTHS USING 5 DIFFERENT SHOPS, AND IT STILL WASN'T FIXED. I AM VERY UNHAPPY AND DO NOT FEEL SAFE ON THE ROAD IN MY 2010 FJ. PLEASE HELP. *TR
WHILE APPROACHING A STOPLIGHT WITH LIGHT BRAKING, FOR APPROXIMATELY A HALF BLOCK, THE ABS STARTED TO PULSATE THE FRONT BRAKES THUS CAUSING THEM TO LOSE EFFECTIVENESS. I TRIED TO PUSH HARDER BUT HAD NO EFFECT ON THE CONDITION. I THEN LET CLEAR OFF THE BRAKE PEDAL IN ORDER FOR THE BRAKES TO "RESET" IF YOU WILL, THEN I WAS ABLE STOP PRIOR TO RUNNING THROUGH THE RED LIGHT. HAD THERE BEEN A VEHICLE OR PEDESTRIAN IN FRONT OF ME THE OUTCOME WOULD HAVE NOT BEEN A GOOD ONE. I BELIEVE TOYOTA HAS A PROBLEM WITH THIS ISSUE. *TR

2 WHEEL STUDS FAILED ON TWO DIFFERENT WHEELS AFTER APPLYING 80 FOOT POUNDS TORQUE TO THE LUG NUTS. ROUTINE RE-TORQUE AFTER THE DEALER ROTATED THE TIRES FOR A 10,000 MILE SERVICE. THE STUD METAL APPEARS TO BE TOO SOFT. EVEN IF THESE STUDS WERE OVER TIGHTENED AT THE DEALERSHIP, THEY SHOULD BE ABLE TO HANDLE WAY MORE THAN 80 FP BEFORE BREAKING. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. TOYOTA SHOULD REPLACE ALL THE STUDS ON THE VEHICLE AS A PRECAUTIONARY MEASURE. TAKING THE ISSUE UP WITH THE DEALER TOMORROW. I WILL NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING THIS VEHICLE UNTIL ALL THE STUDS HAVE BEEN INSPECTED AND REPLACED AS NECESSARY. *TT

STEERING WHEEL VIBRATES AND SHAKES AT RANDOM TIMES BETWEEN 50 AND 60 MPH. *TR
WHEEL STUD BROKE OFF WHEN CHANGING TO WINTER TIRES. A TORQUE WRENCH WAS USED TO PREVENT OVERTORQUEING. THE CAR HAS 3247 MILES. NO ONE HAD TOUCHED THE WHEELS UNTIL TODAY. ACCORDING TO MY RESEARCH, THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM SEEN WITH 2010 TOYOTA FJ CRUISER AND 2010 TOYOTA 4RUNNER MODELS. NHTSA SHOULD ASK TOYOTA TO INSTITUTE A SAFETY RECALL FOR THE DEALERS TO INSPECT AND REPLACE ANY DAMAGED WHEEL STUDS. DRIVING A NEW 2010 TOYOTA FJ CRUISER WITH APPROXIMATELY 600 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. MODERATE RAIN. WHEN TURNING OFF A PAVED ROADWAY ONTO A FLAT, WET, AND MUDDY SURFACE I HAD THE EXPERIENCE OF TOTAL MOMENTARY BRAKE FAILURE. THIS OCCURRED AS MY LEFT FRONT TIRE LEFT THE ROAD SURFACE AND HIT THE SLICK MUD. MY SPEED WAS UNDER 20 MPH AND I WAS ABLE TO REGAIN BRAKING POWER BY RELEASING THE BRAKE AND THEN RE-APPLYING IT. MY ASSUMPTION AT THE TIME WAS IT WAS THE RESULT OF SOME KIND OF WEIRD ABS BEHAVIOR. I WAS APPLYING THE BRAKES VERY LIGHTLY TO GRADUALLY SLOW MY VEHICLE. THE BRAKES BEHAVED NORMALLY UNTIL THE FIRST TIRE HIT THE SLICK MUDDY SURFACE. SOMEHOW THE SYSTEM CAUSED ALL 4 WHEELS TO LOSE ALL BRAKING POWER. *TR
2010 TOYOTA FJ CRUISER WHEEL STUDS FAILED WHEN REMOVING BOLTS TO ROTATE TIRES. AMERICAN TIRE CENTER OF PALMDALE CALIFORNIA ORIGINALLY INSTALLED FOUR NEW TIRES WITH LESS THAN 10K MI. ON ODOMETER. AT APPROXIMATELY 15K MI. WHEN SAME COMPANY ATTEMPTED TO REMOVE WHEELS FOR ROUTINE TIRE ROTATION THE WHEEL STUDS BEGAN BREAKING ONE AFTER THE OTHER. 4 OUT OF 6 WHEEL STUDS FAILED ON FRONT RIGHT WHEEL ALONE. AMERICAN TIRE CENTER REPLACED THE BROKEN STUDS, HOWEVER, WHEN OWNER TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER TO PERFORM PRECAUTIONARY WHEEL STUD REPLACEMENT THE DEALER, (WITHOUT PERFORMING INSPECTION) SAID IT WAS AMERICAN TIRE CENTER WHO LIKELY OVERTORQUED BOLTS AND THAT IT WOULD NOT BE COVERED UNDER FACTORY WARRANTY. LUGS WERE ALL DEFORMED AT SPECIFIC POINT ALONG THE MIDDLE OF THE SHAFT AND HAD A STRETCHED "TAFFY-LIKE" APPEARANCE BUT ONLY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE LUG. REPLACEMENT COST FOR COMPLETE WHEEL LUG REPLACEMENT WAS ESTIMATED AT $600.00 BY HUNTINGTON BEACH TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. BROKEN WHEEL STUDS RETAINED BY OWNER FOR FURTHER INVESTIGATION. FURTHER ACTION SUSPENDED UNTIL OWNER RETURNS FROM MILITARY DUTY OVERSEAS. VIN NOT IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE TO COMPLAINANT DUE TO OVERSEAS DEPLOYMENT. *TR

CONSIDERING THE SOUND THAT IT MADE WHEN I HEARD IT I SIMPLY CANNOT BELIEVE THE AMOUNT OF DAMAGE THAT HAS OCCURRED. IF YOU SIMPLY DO A GOOGLE SEARCH FOR "FJ CRUISER WINDSHIELD ISSUES/COMPLAINTS" YOU WILL FIND A PLETHORA OF COMPLAINTS/BLOGS/RANTS & RAVES ABOUT HOW THIS HAS HAPPENED FROM 2007 ONWARDS AND ALL COMPLAINTS HAVE SEEMINGLY FALLEN ON DEAF EARS. REPAIRS RANGE ANYWHERE FROM AROUND $500 - $1200 DEPENDING ON WHERE YOU GO TO REPLACE IT. AND AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED THAT AFTER SPENDING $38,000.00 ON A VEHICLE THIS SIMPLY SHOULDN'T HAPPEN. THIS IS AN ISSUE THAT HONDA FACED IN CERTAIN YEAR/MODEL "HONDA ELEMENTS". NOT ONLY WAS THERE ISSUE COMPLAINED ABOUT ENOUGH TO GET FREE REPLACEMENTS BUT IT ALSO SPURRED HONDA TO TOTALLY RE-DESIGN THE WINDSHIELD FOR THE FOLLOWING YEARS. 2010 FJ CRUISER STEERING WHEEL SHAKE/VIBRATION. ONLY OCCURS WHEN DRIVING THE VEHICLE BETWEEN 55 MPH AND 65 MPH. DRIVING THE VEHICLE ON IDENTICAL ROAD CONDITIONS BELOW 55 MPH OR ABOVE 65 MPH DOES NOT CAUSE THE STEERING WHEEL TO SHAKE/VIBRATE. STEERING WHEEL SHAKE/VIBRATION OCCURS DURING THE ABOVE MENTIONED SPEEDS, REGARDLESS OF ROAD CONDITIONS. DEALER CLAIMS THIS IS NORMAL AND REFUSES TO ADDRESS SAFETY ISSUE. I have a dangerous steering issue. I tried to get my Toyota dealer to fix it, or adjust it but they said nothing was wrong. I feel they didn't want to even try. This issue has almost led to head-on collisions many times. I have replaced the tires, no help there. I had it aligned, (at dealer I purchased it from) with no improvements at all. What it does is, to stay in the center of the road I can not turn my head away from constantly adding steering input. This is an issue a big one, my car Drifts left or right but rarely goes straight when steered straight, I must constantly make adjustments to its direction. Before I replace the tires again, (the car has only 53,000 miles on it) and align it again I feel this problem must be fixed or properly adjusted to work without constant steering input to stay in my lane. I replaced tires with better than it came with, costing around $750 these are now showing bad wear after less than 20,000 miles and purchase information said I should not need to replace them for 60,000 miles. Additional information is the last 300 feet to my house is a dirt road, but it's not that bumpy and shouldn't be the reason that I can't steer it straight on asphalt.
WHEN THE VEHICLE REACHES 65 MPH THE STEERING WHEEL SHAKES. NOT A UNCONTROLLABLE SHAKE BUT ITS FELT AND IT CAN BE SEEN IF THE STEERING WHEEL IS RELEASED. SHAKE CONTINUES UP UNTIL ABOUT 70 MPH. HAVE INSTALLED NEW TIRES AND WHEELS WITH REPEATED BALANCING, BUT SHAKING CONTINUES. *TR
VEHICLE EXHIBITS STEERING SHIMMY BETWEEN 40-60 MPH. DEALER HAS REPLACED 4 SETS OF LT TIRES AND 1 SET OR RIMS. AFTER EACH NEW SET OF TIRES AND A FRESH ROAD FORCE BALANCE THE TIRES AND A FEW HUNDRED MILES OF DRIVEN THE SHIMMY WOULD COME BACK. THE VEHICLE'S DOOR PLACE CARD FOR THE TIRES SAYS 33PSI AND 35PSI IN TWO DIFFERENT STICKERS. THE TIRES WOULD SELF DESTRUCT WITHIN A FEW THOUSAND MILES AND THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO BALANCE THEM AGAIN. THIS IS A RESULT OF UNDERIN-FLATION FOR "E" RATED TIRES. TOYOTA HAS SINCE CHANGED THE PSI TO 46 VS 35 VIA A RECALL. IN MANY CASES THE ECU NEEDS TO BE REPLACED IN ORDER FOR THIS RECALL TO BE PERFORMED. TOYOTA MOTOR SALES IS REFUSING TO PERFORM THIS RECALL GOING BACK TO 2008 ON VEHICLES NOT RUNNING THE OE TIRE. EVEN IF IT IS "E" RATED. THIS CREATED A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD. RUNNING UNDER-INFLATED TIRES WILL HEAT UP AND RISK A BLOW OUT. RUNNING THE NHTSA PSI OF 46 WILL CAUSE THE CURRENT TOMS TO FAIL AND DEFEATS THE WHOLE MANDATED TPMS SYSTEM. *TR
