DRIVER'S SIDE SUN VISOR WILL NOT STAY UP. KEEPS FALLING DOWN WHILE DRIVING. *TR
THREE TIMES REPORTED FEELING A RATTLE IN THE STEERING ON RIGHT TURN LN ROUGH ROAD TO TOYOTA SERVICE DEPT. THREE TIMES THEY DENY SAYING 3 PEOPLE (INCLUDING THE SERVICE MANAGER) DROVE IT AND DIDN'T FEEL ANYTHING. I TOLD THEM THAT WHEN THERE'S MORE WEIGHT ON THE FRONT END, LIKE BRAKING DOWNHILL AND TURNING RIGHT CAN FEEL IT MORE. BUT THE TESTED ON FLAT GROUND IN THE AREA OF MOTOR IMPORTS DOWNTOWN HONOLULU. I EVEN REPORTED IN EARLIER SERVICING THAT THE CAR DRIFTS FROM SIDE TO SIDE ON THE FREEWAY. AS IF THE STEERING IS LOOSE. AND THEY TEST DROVE AND SAID IT WAS FINE. THIS IS THE LAST DAY OF MY WARRANTY AND I GOOGLED THE PROBLEM TO FIND OTHERS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM AND EVEN A DIAGRAM OF THE FIX ON: HTTP://WWW.UNDERHOODSERVICE.COM/ARTICLE/110175/TECH_TIPS_TOYOTA_TACOMA_MAKES_RATTLING_NOISES_ON_ROUGH_ROADS.ASPX . THIS SHOWS THAT IN 2012 THEY FIXED IT ON SOME TOYOTA'S: A NEWLY DESIGNED STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT (P/N 45220-04020) HAS BEEN MADE AVAILABLE TO ADDRESS THIS CONDITION, BUT THAT'S 2012. MY CAR IS A 2010 BEFORE THE FIX. THE SOLUTION IS TO INSTALL A STEERING WHEEL HOLDER. SHOW THAT THE PROBLEM IS ABOUT $1500 TO FIX AND SOMEBODY EVEN HAD A STEERING COLUMN FAILURE. *TR
WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY, THE DRIVER'S SIDE SUN VISOR FELL DOWN AND OBSTRUCTED VIEW OF THE ROAD. WHEN ATTEMPTING TO PUSH VISOR BACK UP OUT OF MY LINE OF SIGHT, IT WOULD NOT STAY IN THE PROPER POSITION TO BLOCK SUN AND TO WHERE IT DID NOT OBSTRUCT VIEW OF THE ROAD. THE VISOR WILL EITHER STAY ALL THE WAY UP AGAINST THE CEILING OR ALL THE WAY DOWN ALMOST PARALLEL WITH THE WINDSHIELD. THERE SEEMS TO BE SOME TYPE OF SPRING OR PIECE OF MATERIAL BROKEN INSIDE VISOR CAUSING IT TO MALFUNCTION. THIS IS VERY ANNOYING AND VERY UNSAFE. *TR
MY HUSBAND AND TWO YEAR OLD DAUGHTER WERE IN A HEAD ON COLLISION WITH A TREE AFTER ANOTHER VEHICLE CAME INTO HIS LANE AND HE ATTEMPTED TO AVOID THE HEAD ON COLLISION WITH THE OTHER VEHICLE. NO AIRBAGS DEPLOYED. SIGNIFICANT INJURIES. THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE WRAPPED AROUND THE TREE. WINDSHIELD SHATTERED IN SEVERAL PLACES. RIGHT PASSENGER DOOR SMASHED IN. NO DOORS ON THE CAR CLOSE ALL THE WAY. REAR PASSENGER DOOR IS OFF THE HINGE. CAR IS A TOTAL LOSS. SIX AIRBAGS IN THE CAR AND NOT ONE OF THEM DEPLOYED. VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED BRAND NEW. NEVER BEEN WRECKED. *TR
VISOR ON DRIVERS SIDE WILL NOT GO UP. IT IS CONSTANTLY IN THE WAY OF MY VISION AS I DRIVE. *TR
AS I AM DRIVING THE SUN VISOR FALLS DOWN INTO MY DRIVING SIGHT. THE VISOR WILL NOT STAY DOWN OR UP. IT JUST REMAINS IN MY LINE OF VISION. IT CONCERNS ME BECAUSE IT LIMITS MY VISIBILITY AND THE POTENTIAL OF CAUSING AN ACCIDENT.
THE DRIVER'S SUN VISOR HAS BEEN USED INFREQUENTLY, AND IS TYPICALLY IN TACT. HOWEVER, TODAY WHEN USING THE VISOR TO BLOCK THE SUNLIGHT THE VISOR WOULD NOT RETREAT BACK INTO POSITION AND KEPT FALLING DOWN IN AN UNSECURED MANNER BLOCKING MY DRIVING VISION BECAUSE IT WOULD NOT STAY INTO PLACE. PROPER VISIBILITY WAS COMPROMISED BY THIS DEFECTIVE VISOR AND THIS IS A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY CONCERN FOR VEHICLE OPERATORS. *TR
THE DRIVER SIDE SUN VISOR DOES NOT RETAIN ITS CLOSED POSITION. IT FALLS DOWN DURING DRIVING AND HINDERS VISTO ABILITY OF DRIVER TO SEE. CLEARLY A SAFETY ISSUE AND A DANGER DURING DRIVING TIME TO THE DRIVER AND OTHER VEHICLES CLOSE TO THE DRIVER. *TR
THE DRIVER SIDE VISOR WILL NOT MAINTAIN IN THE UP POSITION. IF FALLS DOWN DIRECTLY INTO MY LINE OF VISION AND IS VERY DISTRACTING AND DANGEROUS. *JS
THE TRANSMISSION EXHIBITS TRANSMISSION FLARE AND EXTREMELY ROUGH SHIFTING. AS THE PROBLEM PROGRESSED I WAS TOLD I NEEDED A NEW TRANSMISSION.
DOOR AJAR CHIME GOES OFF AND SOMETIMES DOME LIGHTS FLASH ON WHEN MAKING A TURN, STOPPING, OR ACCELERATING FROM A STOP. THIS PRIMARILY HAPPENS WHEN THE OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE IS HOT (95+). ADDITIONALLY, THE RADIO DISPLAY WILL SHOW ILLEGIBLE INFORMATION OCCASIONALLY. I'VE HAD THE RADIO REPLACED, BUT THE ISSUE REMAINS. THIS WILL GO AWAY WHEN THE CAR IS TURNED OFF AND BACK ON AND ONLY HAPPENS WHEN THE EXTERNAL TEMPERATURE IS HOT (95+). *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DOOR AJAR ALARM WOULD SOUND WHILE TURNING LEFT. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 45,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER HYBRID. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE WHEEL BEARING SENSOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR THE SAME FAILURE ON THREE OCCASIONS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 77,000. *TR
THE OTHER DAY I LOWERED THE DRIVER'S SIDE SUN VISOR ON MY 2010 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER. WHEN I TRIED TO MOVE THE VISOR BACK TO THE UP POSITION I HEARD SOMETHING POP OR SNAP. AS A RESULT, THE VISOR WILL NO LONGER STAY IN THE UP POSITION, UNNECESSARILY OBSTRUCTING MY VISION WHILE DRIVING. THE SERVICE REP AT THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THE HINGE WAS BROKEN AND THAT IT WILL COST $300 (PARTS AND LABOR) TO REPLACE THE VISOR. WHEN I CHECKED THE INTERNET I LEARNED THAT OTHER PEOPLE ARE REPORTING THE SAME SUCH PROBLEM. *TR
2010 HIGHLANDER 4WD: SYSTEM CHECK PANEL INDICATING THE REAR DOOR IS OPEN, WHEN IT'S NOT. SOMETIMES THE INDICATOR ONLY CHIMES (& OVERHEAD LIGHT BLINKS) WHEN WE TAKE A LEFT OR RIGHT TURN. SOMETIMES IT CHIMES CONTINUOUSLY AS SOON AS WE GET THE CAR INTO GEAR. THE BACK DOOR IS MOST DEFINITELY CLOSED EACH TIME; THE BACK DOOR INDICATOR IS MALFUNCTIONING. *TR
I'D STOPPED ON THE RESIDENTIAL STREET TO LET A CAR PASS. AFTER THE CAR PASSED, I ATTEMPTED TO PULL UP ALONG THE CURB TO PARK, BUT THE CAR ACCELERATED AND CRASHED INTO A TREE. THE BRAKES DID NOT RESPOND AND THE STEERING DID NOT SEEM TO RESPOND. THE SPACE BETWEEN ACCELERATION AND IMPACT WAS 10-15 FEET. IT'S LIKE THE CAR HAD A MIND OF ITS OWN, AND I HAD NO CONTROL. NO WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON AND THE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE PASSENGER SIDE HEADLIGHT WAS SMASHED, THE HOOD WAS SMASHED, FRONT BUMPER AND PASSENGER SIDE FENDER WERE ALSO SMASHED. THE ONLY THING THAT STOPPED THE CAR WAS THE TREE. ONCE IT STOPPED, I SIMPLY TURNED THE IGNITION OFF. I IMMEDIATELY CALLED MY INSURANCE COMPANY AND THEY TOLD ME TO TOW IT TO SAN FRANCISCO TOYOTA FOR MECHANICAL INSPECTION. I CALLED SAN FRANCISCO TOYOTA AND SAID THAT I WAS TOWING MY CAR DOWN AND WAS TOLD THEY'D BE WAITING FOR IT. LATER THAT DAY I RECEIVED A CALL FROM DON'S AUTOBODY TELLING ME THEY HAD MY CAR. I CONFIRMED WITH SF TOYOTA AND THEY SAID THEY SENT THE CAR THERE AND THE AUTO BODY WORK HAD TO BE DONE PRIOR TO A MECHANICAL INSPECTION. ON 4/15/13, I WAS INFORMED THE CAR HAD BEEN REPAIRED AND WAS SENT TO SF TOYOTA. I REPEATEDLY CALLED SF TOYOTA TO SEE IF THEY HAD FOUND ANY MECHANICAL DEFECTS. ON 4/16/13, I WAS CONTACTED BY DON'S AUTOBODY AND TOLD THAT TOYOTA REFUSED TO INSPECT THE CAR. SINCE WE DON'T KNOW IF THE CAR IS SAFE TO DRIVE, THE PERSON FROM THE AUTOBODY SHOP SUGGESTED WE CALL TOYOTA USA. TOYOTA USA OPENED A CASE AND HAS ENLISTED BILL FROM ENGINEERING ANALYTICS TO INSPECT THE CAR. BILL PLANS TO INSPECT THE CAR ON 4/30/13. HE WILL COLLECT DATA AND SEND IT TO TOYOTA. TOYOTA SAID THEY'LL REVIEW THE DATA AND WILL MAIL US THE RESULTS WITHIN 30 BUSINESS DAYS. WHEN WE EXPRESSED CONCERN THAT TOYOTA WAITED 6 WEEKS TO LOOK AT OUR CAR (WHICH THE AUTOBODY SAID THEY'VE DRIVEN), TOYOTA HAD NO COMMENT. *TR
THE DRIVER'S SIDE SUN VISOR FELL DOWN WHILE DRIVING AND NOW WON'T STAY UP. THIS ALMOST CAUSED AN ACCIDENT AS MY VISIBILITY WAS CUT OFF. NOW I AM UNABLE TO DRIVE UNLESS I SOMEHOW PROP IT UP. THIS CAR IS LESS THAN 3 YEARS OLD AND SEEMS TO BE A PROBLEM FOR MANY HIGHLANDERS. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. *TR
THE DRIVER SIDE VISOR WILL NOT REMAIN IN THE UP POSITION. IF FALLS DOWN DIRECTLY INTO THE LINE OF VISION AND PARTIALLY OBSTRUCT VISION. IT MIGHT NOT BE AN ISSUE FOR DRIVER 5'2 TALL OR LESS BUT FOR 6 FT OR ABOVE IT'S AN ISSUE. *TR
THE DRIVER SIDE VISOR WILL NOT STAY IN POSITION AND FALLS DOWN OBSTRUCTING DRIVER'S VIEW OF THE ROAD. THE VEHICLE IS WELL MAINTAINED. BASED ON AN INTERNET SEARCH, THIS APPEARS TO BE AN ISSUE WITH OTHER TOYOTAS AS WELL. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER HYBRID. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 40 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE CONTACT TOWED THE VEHICLE TO A DEALER. THE DEALER PERFORMED A DIAGNOSTIC TEST. THE TEST SHOWED A DEFECTIVE COIL PACK WHICH CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO STALL. THE DEALER REPLACED THE COIL AS WELL AS THE BATTERY. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 25,400.
DRIVER SIDE SUN VISOR SPRING SEEMS TO BE DEFECTIVE AND THE SUN VISOR KEEPS FALLING DOWN (DOES NOT STAY IN UP POSITION) BLOCKING THE VISIBILITY OF THE ROAD. I CALLED THE DEALER TO VERIFY IF THIS WAS A RECALL ISSUE AND I WAS TOLD THAT IT IS A COMMON ISSUE BUT NOT ENOUGH FOR A RECALL. THE COST OF REPLACING IS AN ABSURD!!! *TR
I PURCHASED THIS 2010 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER NEW. AT 45,000 MILES, THE DRIVER-SIDE SUN VISOR FAILED TO REMAIN IN THE UPRIGHT POSITION. IT CONTINUES TO FALL AND BLOCK THE DRIVER'S VIEW WHEN DRIVING. EVEN THOUGH THE VEHICLE WAS WITHIN THE 50,000 MILE WARRANTY PERIOD, THE DEALERSHIP SAID THE SUN VISOR IS NOT COVERED UNDER THE WARRANTY. I NEW VISOR IS OVER $200. I USED TO WORK FOR THE TOYOTA AT THE HEADQUARTERS LOCATED IN TORRANCE, CALIFORNIA. IT IS UNFORTUNATE THAT TOYOTA DOES NOT RECOGNIZE THIS SUN VISOR AS A CUSTOMER HAZARD AND FAILURE OF THE PART. THIS FAILURE SHOULD BE REPAIRED/REPLACED AT TOYOTA'S EXPENSE BEFORE IT CAUSES SERIOUS HARM TO THE DRIVER AND PASSENGERS. *TR
THE SPRING IN THE VISOR NO LONGER WORKS IT IS FALLING DOWN IN THE SIGHTLINE OF THE DRIVER. AFTER LOOKING ON LINE THIS LOOKS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH TOYOTA. *TR
IN JANUARY OF 2013, I TOOK MY HIGHLANDER INTO A DEALER'S SERVICE DEPARTMENT TO DIAGNOSE A PROBLEM WITH MY DRIVER'S SIDE FRONT AUTOMATIC LOCK, WHICH HAD COMPLETELY STOPPED WORKING AT AROUND 46,000 MILES. THIS MEANS I HAD TO PHYSICALLY PRESS THE LOCK AS NOT EVEN THE KEY WOULD WORK. I HAD TO OPEN THE PASSENGER SIDE DOOR, CRAWL ACROSS THE SEAT, & UNLOCK THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR IN ORDER TO GET IN MY CAR. I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER THAT THE PROBLEM WAS THE DOOR LOCK ACTUATOR, WHICH WENT OUT, & IT WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. RATHER THAN PAYING $575 AT THE DEALER, I FOUND A MECHANIC THAT ORDERED THE PART & REPLACED THE ACTUATOR FOR LESS THAN $400. LESS THAN THREE MONTHS LATER, AT JUST OVER 50,000 MILES & ONLY 2.5 YEARS OF OWNING THE CAR, THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE ACTUATOR WENT OUT. NEEDLESS TO SAY, I HAD SOME WORDS WITH THE DEALER, & THEY AGREED TO DO A ONE-TIME "COURTESY" FIX, REPLACING IT AT NO COST. OVER THE NEXT FEW MONTHS, BOTH OF THE REAR DOOR ACTUATORS WENT OUT. NOT WANTING TO SPEND $800+ TO REPLACE THE ACTUATORS, I DECIDED TO LIVE WITH RISK & ANNOYANCE THIS CAUSED, HOPING THERE'D SOON BE A RECALL. WELL, HERE WE ARE IN MARCH 2015, & AT 87,000 MILES, GUESS WHAT? THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE ACTUATOR IS GOING OUT AGAIN. SEARCHING THE WEB FOR THIS ISSUE, I FOUND HUNDREDS OF SIMILAR COMPLAINTS FROM OTHER TOYOTA OWNERS, OVER A VARIETY OF MODELS & YEARS. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE & TOYOTA NEEDS TO RECALL ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES. I CAN COME UP WITH AT LEAST A DOZEN SCENARIOS WHERE THIS ISSUE COULD CAUSE SERIOUS HARM TO THE CAR'S OCCUPANTS. IF I CAN'T GET TO MY CHILD IN THE BACK SEAT BECAUSE I'VE BEEN IN A WRECK & DOOR IS LOCKED; IF I AM CAR-JACKED B/C THE DOOR WOULDN'T LOCK; IF I HAVE TO ENTER THROUGH THE PASSENGER'S SIDE TO UNLOCK MY DOOR AND X/Y/Z HAPPENS... I'VE ALREADY LOCKED MYSELF OUT DUE TO THIS ISSUE (CAR THINKS DOORS ARE UNLOCKED & WON'T WARN ME MY KEYS ARE INSIDE)! HELP! *TR
DRIVERS SIDE SUNVISOR DROPS DOWN INTO VIEW AND WILL NOT STAY UP, SEEMS TO BE A MAJOR PROBLEM WITH ALL THESE CARS FROM WHAT I SEE ON ALL THE FORUMS. *TR
THE VISOR IS DEFECTIVE AND GETS STUCK IN A 45 DEGREE ANGLE POSITION. A WARRANTY REPAIR WAS MADE, BUT IT HAPPENED A SECOND TIME OUTSIDE OF WARRANTY. ALSO, THE PASSENGER SIDE VISOR DEVELOPED THE SAME PROBLEM, ALSO OUTSIDE OF WARRANTY. BASED ON THE POSITION OF THE VISOR AT A 45 DEGREE ANGLE, IF THERE'S AN ACCIDENT THE HEAD OF THE DRIVER OR PASSENGER WILL GO RIGHT INTO THE BRIM OF THE VISOR. THIS IS OBVIOUSLY VERY DANGEROUS AND SHOULD BE ADDRESSED BY TOYOTA. I BELIEVE TOYOTA NEEDS TO ISSUE A RECALL IMMEDIATELY BEFORE SOMEONE GETS SERIOUSLY INJURED OR WORSE. *TR
THE DRIVER'S SIDE SUN VISOR HAS DROPPED, BLOCKING THE LINE OF VISION. IT DOES NOT ALLOW ME TO PUSH IT UP TO BE COMPLETELY OUT OF THE WAY. I HAVE READ THAT THE CAMRYS HAD THE SAME ISSUE AND TOYOTA ISSUED A RECALL FOR THE CAMRYS BUT HAS NOT FOR THE HIGHLANDER. TOYOTA NEEDS TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE . *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS STARTED, THE AIR BAG WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED INTERMITTENTLY. THE FAILURE RECURRED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG MODULE WAS FAULTY AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 25,000.
2010 HIGHLANDER 4WD: SYSTEM CHECK PANEL INDICATES REAR WINDOW IS OPEN WHEN IT'S NOT. THIS HAPPENS WHEN I TAKE A LEFT TURN OR HIT A DIP IN THE ROAD. ALSO IF THE MOON ROOF IS OPEN AND CLOSED AND WHEN THE DRIVERS OR PASSENGER WINDOW IS OPEN AND CLOSED THE PANEL WILL LIGHT UP, CHIME AND INTERIOR LIGHTS WILL ALL COME ON. THE ONLY TIME THE WINDOWS AND MOON ROOF SEEM TO EFFECT IT IS WHEN I AM DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. OTHERWISE THE SMALLER SIDE ROADS EFFECT IF WITH NO RHYME OR REASON. PROBLEM HAS BECOME INCREASINGLY WORSE OVER TIME. MECHANIC COULD NOT FIND THE PROBLEM SINCE THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN EVERY TIME THE CAR IS RUNNING. *TR
DRIVING ON I-5 MONDAY AM TO WORK AND DUE TO THE SUN SHINING IN MY EYES PUT THE VISOR DOWN. LATER WHEN THE SUN WENT BEHIND SOME CLOUDS I PUT THE VISOR BACK UP AND I HEARD NOISE FROM THE VISOR THAT APPEARED TO BE LIKE PLASTIC RUBBING TOGETHER. WHEN I LET GO OF THE VISOR IT DROPPED STRAIGHT DOWN IN MY LINE OF SIGHT AND WOULD NOT STAY UP OR EVEN FORWARD CLOSE TO THE WINDOW. SEEMS TO BE A DANGEROUS PROBLEM AS IT IS RIGHT IN THE LINE OF SIGHT AND CANNOT BE ADJUSTED. I HAD TO UNINSTALL THE VISOR AND NOW I DON'T HAVE ANY SUNLIGHT PROTECTION. THE VISOR WORKED FINE UP TO THIS POINT. NO INDICATION OF A PROBLEM. HAVE NEVER REPLACED A VISOR BEFORE THIS. *TR
SUN ROOF GLASS EXPLODED WHILE DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY AT ABOUT 60 TO 65 MILES PER HOUR. WE HAD THE SUN SHADE CLOSED SO WE DID NOT KNOW THE SUN ROOF GLASS HAD EXPLODED.
