TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2012 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER. WHILE STATIONARY, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED RAPIDLY WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE CRASHED INTO A CABINET IN FRONT OF HER HOUSE. THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED AND THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE CRASH. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 48,000.
ON FEBRUARY 2, 2017,MY 2012 HIGHLANDER WAS PLACED IN PARK AND LEFT IN HIGH SCHOOL( DHS DURANGO, CO) ROUND ABOUT WITH KEYS IN CAR. I PARKED MY CAR IN FRONT OF A SCHOOL ROUND ABOUT, LEFT THE KEYS IN IGNITION BECAUSE I WAS RETURNING. THE VEHICLE SHIFTED OUT OF PARK, ACCELERATED UP A SLIGHT INCLINE IN THE DRIVEWAY AND HIT A PARKED TRUCK. THERE WAS NO ONE IN THE VEHICLE. VIDEO FROM SAFETY OFFICER AT HIGH SCHOOL SHOWS THE WHOLE EVENT. THE VEHICLE WAS PLACED IN PARK, LIGHTS TURN OFF AS I PARKED VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE SITS STILL IN PARK FOR SOME TIME, THEN PROCEEDS TO MOVE ON ITS OWN AND RUNS INTO VEHICLE AHEAD OF IT. THE TRUCK IN FRONT HAD DAMAGE TO BACK LEFT BUMPER AND BODY....MY VEHICLE HAS DAMAGE TO FRONT RIGHT BUMPER. MOST ALARMED BY VEHICLE HAVING CHANGED GEARS AND MOVED ON ITS OWN WITH NO ONE IN VEHICLE. SEVERAL WITNESS AND VIDEO THAT I AM UNABLE TO UP LOAD. CASE HAS BEEN INITIATED WITH TOYOTA AND SOMEONE IS COMING FROM DENVER TO DO A EDR ON TUESDAY, MARCH 7TH, 2017. I'M AFRAID ALL THE STORIES I'VE READ OVER THE WEEKEND ON INTERNET ARE VERY TRUE...THERE IS NO OTHER EXPLANATION TO WHAT HAPPENED. CONCERNED THAT TOYOTA REP WILL TRY TO MISREAD AND MIS-INTERPRET FINDINGS OR CAUSE DATA TO BE TAMPERED WITH...MY MAIN CONCERN IS SAFETY AND ASIDE FROM THIS INCIDENT AND A FEW UNEXPLAINED PULLING ON THE GAS PUMP LIKE A DRAG OR ACCELERATION, I THOUGHT MY CAR WAS SAFE---SOMEONE COULD HAVE BEEN SEVERELY INJURED. SINCE I WAS NOT PRIVY TO WHAT HAPPENED UNTIL VIDEO WAS PROVIDED FE. 23, I HAD NO IDEA HOW TO REPORT TO INSURANCE MY VEHICLE RUNNING INTO SOMEONE WITH NO ONE IN IT!
THE REAR WIPER QUITS WORKING. INITIALLY THE DEALERSHIP TOOK IT APART, CLEANED IT AND IT WORKED TEMPORARILY. BUT THEN THE WIPER QUIT WORKING AGAIN. THERE APPEARS TO BE A PROBLEM WITH THE MECHANISM AND/OR REAR WINDOW ALLOWING IN MOISTURE FOR THIS TO CONTINUE OCCURRING, REQUIRING THE NEED TO KEEP GOING IN AND CLEANING IT OR HAVING TO REPLACE IT AS SOME HAVE REPORTED WHICH APPEARS TO BE THE POINT I AM AT THE LAST TIME I TOOK IT IN.
2012 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT FAILURE AND HORN CABLE FAILURE. *LD THE CONSUMER STATED THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL FOR THESE FAILURES AND TO BE REIMBURSED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. *JS
THE DOOR LOCKS ON MY 2012 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER STOPPED WORKING. WITH ONLY 51K ON THE CAR, ALL 4 DOORS WONT CLOSE WITH THE KEY FOB, OR ON THE DOOR. THEY OPEN BUT DONT CLOSE, I HAVE TO MANUALLY CLOSE EACH DOOR LOCK EVERY TIME I WANT THE DOORS LOCKED. I'VE SEEN MANY POSTS ABOUT THIS! I THINK ITS TIME TOYOTA FIXES THE PROBLEM WITH A RECALL! I WAS TOLD BY TOYOTA DEALER THAT IT IS MALFUNCTION OF THE ACTUATOR AND THAT THEY SEE THIS ALL THE TIME WITH THIS MODULE... IT WOULD COST ME $500-$600 TO LET THEM FIX IT!!WHY SHOULD THE CONSUMER HAVE TO PAY FOR THE MANUFACTURERS PROBLEMS!! CAN I HEAR RECALL! RECALL! RECALL!!
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2012 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH, CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE WAS LOST DUE TO THE ROAD BEING WET. THE VEHCILE BEGAN TO SPIN HITTING ANOTHER VEHICLE CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO LAND OFF THE ROAD INTO A DITCH. THE VEHICLE RECEIVED DAMAGE TO THE FRONT-END AND THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED AND TOTALED. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE CONTACT STATED THE DRIVER RECEIVED NECK INJURIES AND BOTH PASSENGERS THAT WERE SEATED IN THE REAR RECEIVED INJURIES TO THE HEAD AND RIGHT SIDE OF THE ABDOMIN. NO MEDICAL ATTENTION WAS NEEDED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 99,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2012 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MALE SEAT BELT CONNECTOR FAILED TO CONNECT INTO THE FEMALE CONNECTOR. THE SEAT BELT INDICATOR WAS ILLUMINATED. THE DEALER DIAGNOSED THAT THE FEMALE SEAT BELT CONNECTOR FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE SEAT BELT CONNECTOR WAS REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 70,000.
DOOR LOCK/UNLOCK STOPPED WORKING ABOUT 1 YEAR AGO. I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER THAT I HAD TO COVER THE DIAGNOSTIC TEST. I GOT IT DONE TODAY AND WAS TOLD THAT THE 3 DEFECTIVE DOORS HAVE AN ISSUE AND SOME PART MUST BE CHANGED AT A TUNE OF $1700! IF THE CAR HAS AN ELECTRICAL ISSUE, THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD COVER IT, ESPECIALLY BECAUSE IT INVOLVES 3 OUT OF 4 DOORS. THERE WAS NOTHING I DID OR COULD HAVE DONE TO MESS UP THE 3 DOORS.
2012 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO FAULTY ELECTRIC WINDOW MOTOR WHICH RESULTED IN A VEHICLE FIRE. *LD *JS
BOUGHT THE CAR CERTIFIED PREOWNED IN 2014 AND NOTICED A PROBLEM WITH THE REAR DOOR. WHEN TRYING TO CLOSE AUTOMATICALLY IT WOULD JERK TO A STOP, VIBRATE AND GO BACK UP. THE DEALER AGREED TO FIX IT AND TOOK IT IN BACK FOR AN HOUR. AFTER THAT IT WORKED ON AND OFF FOR TWO YEARS. I STARTED HAVING PROBLEMS AGAIN LAST YEAR AND NOW IT WONT CLOSE AT ALL OR OPEN WITH THE BUTTON- I CAN ONLY OPEN AND CLOSE IT MANUALLY. TOOK IT TO ANOTHER DEALER TWO WEEKS AGO AND THEY SEEMED DUMBFOUNDED DESPITE A NEW NOTICE FROM TOYOTA ON THE MATTER. I HAVE READ THIS IS NOW A COMMON PROBLEM AND THERE IS A CLASS ACTION AGAINST TOYOTA ON THIS MATTER. THE DEALER HAS ORDERED A NEW MOTOR AND I GO BACK NEXT WEEK - ALTHOUGH I'M NOT SURE THAT THIS WILL FIX THE PROBLEM. I HAVE READ ACCOUNTS OF OWNERS GOING BACK 6-8 TIMES AND STILL HAVING PROBLEMS.
THE EYEGLASSES HOLDER IN OUR 2012 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER HAS A MALFUNCTION OF DROPPING DOWN IN FRONT OF THE REARVIEW MIRROR DUE TO THE LOSS OF A SMALL RETAINING PIN. THE ISSUE CAUSES A DISRUPTIVE AND VERY ANNOYING SAFETY HAZARD. ATTEMPTS TO GET THE PROBLEM REPAIRED HAVE MET WITH NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCES AS THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP MECHANICS AND ANOTHER DEALERSHIP IN SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI HAVE CAME TO THE SAME CONCLUSION, NOT REPAIRABLE. WE HAVE TRIED TO TAPE UP THE EYEGLASSES HOLDER, BUT THE TAPE WILL NOT STICK DUE TO THE NATURE OF THE MATERIEL. THE SITUATION BECOMES EMBARRASSING WHEN FAMILY AND FRIENDS ARE IN THE VEHICLE AND TRY TO ASSIST IN KEEPING THE HOLDER UP WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION. HOWEVER, WITHOUT FAVORABLE RESULTS AND CONTINUED NAGGING OR COMPLAINING. WE ARE HOPING THAT THIS INCIDENT INFORMATION WILL BE SUFFICIENT IN FINDING A POSITIVE SOLUTION. THE TIMELINE IS APPROXIMATE AND COULD HAVE BEEN LONGER THAN MARKED BECAUSE OF BEING IN PLAUSIBLE DENIAL.
INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT 45220-48171 HAD TO BE REPLACED. AT HIGH RATE OF SPEED I HAD TO BRAKE HARD, THEN THE ABS INTERMITTENTLY PUSHED THE PADS AGAINST THE DISCS CREATING VIBRATION THAT WAS FELT AT THE STEERING WHEEL VERY NOISY AND SHAKE LIKE LOOKED LIKE MY HIGHLANDER FRONT WHEELS CAME APART .THEN I KNEW THE VEHICLE MUST BE REPAIRED IMMEDIATELY DUE SAFETY PROBLEM.
POWER LIFTGATE ON 2012 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER FAILS TO FULL CLOSE AND LATCH. 4 YEARS OLD NOW, PROBLEM BEGAN 2 YEARS AGO AT 12,000 MILES, AND NOW 1 YEAR PAST 3/36 WARRANTY AND 47,000 MILES. LIFTGATE HAS BEEN COMPLETELY MANUAL FOR LAST 1-1/2 YEARS. USING BUTTONS TO CLOSE POWER LIFTGATE RESULTS IN LEFT SIDE WHERE MOTOR IS TO BE CLOSE TO CLOSED, WHILE RIGHT SIDE HAS AN INCH GAP TO D-PILLAR. NO OTHER REASON FOR ME TO GO TO DEALERSHIP, SO I HAVEN'T SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT. FINALLY TOOK IT IN JUNE 6, 2016. OVER PAST 2 YEARS DEALER SERVICE DESCRIBED SOLUTION AS SIMPLE ADJUSTMENT. HAVE ASKED AT LEAST TWICE "ARE THERE ANY RECALLS OR SERVICE BULLETINS FOR MY HIGHLANDER?" ANSWER IS ALWAYS NO, INCLUDING DAY I TOOK IT FOR "SIMPLE ADJUSTMENT". HOWEVER RECENT RESEARCH FINDS TWO RECALLS AND MULTIPLE SERVICE BULLETINS FOR 2008-2012 HIGHLANDERS. IF THEY HAVE HAD ISSUES WITH POWER LIFTGATES SINCE 2008, WHY IS THERE NO RECALL ON THIS? POTENTIAL CAUSE IS POWERFUL MOTOR PULLS TOO HARD AND BENDS HINGES. NEW DESIGN USES PAIR OF POWER STRUTS TO PULL EVENLY. ESTIMATE APPROACHES $600 FOR NEW HINGES AND OTHER PARTS ($253+TAX), PAINT, AND LABOR. ALREADY PAID $100+TAX TO DIAGNOSE THIS ISSUE, WHICH TOOK ALL OF 15 MINUTES, LEADING ME TO BELIEVE THEY ALREADY KNEW ABOUT THIS ISSUE, AND LIED ABOUT RECALLS AND BULLETINS. MY WIFE'S 2014 RAV4 HAD 1 OF 2 STRUTS REPLACED, AND OTHER ISSUES REPORTED ON NEWER HIGHLANDERS. WOULD LIKE TOYOTA TO FIX THIS KNOWN ISSUE WITHOUT FURTHER COST.
REAR TAILGATE NO LONGER WORKS.STARTED NOT CLOSING OFF AND ON IN JUN. 2016. FINALLY STOPPED WORKING ALL TOGETHER IN AUG 2016. TOOK TO MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP TO SEE WHY IT WAS NOT WORKING THEY DIAGNOSED IT AS A BROKEN MOTOR.I WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE COST TO FIX IT.SINCE IT IS NOW OUT OF WARRANTY. THEY WOULD NOT COVER IT UNDER WARRANTY EVEN THOUGH THERE IS A TOYOTA SERVICE BULLETIN ON IT IN 2012 AND MANY CLASS ACTION LAW SUITS FILED ON IT.
CLUNKING IN STEERING AT SLOW SPEED WHEN MAKING SHARP LEFT OR RIGHT TURNS. DIAGNOSED AS INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT NEEDING REPLACEMENT. REPAIRED AT TOYOTA DEALERSHIP.
REAR TAILGATE MOTOR WITH POWER TO OPEN/LIFT AND CLOSE THE TAILGATE NO LONGER WORKS. COURTESY TOYOTA COLLISION CENTER PROVIDED ESTIMATE OF $1,431.82 ON 4-11-2016 TO REPLACE THE MOTOR. PROBLEM STARTED CIRCA JULY 2015 AFTER WARRANTY EXPIRED NOT CLOSING OFF AND ON UNTIL IT FINALLY STOPPED WORKING. FIRST CHECKED BY TOYOTA DEALER IN TALLAHASSEE, FL WHILE ON A TRIP TO MISSISSIPPI BEFORE THANKSGIVING IN 2015. ADVISED TO HAVE CHECKED UPON RETURN TO TAMPA AREA. THE TAILGATE NOW RATTLES WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2012 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FRONT DRIVER AND PASSENGER DOOR LOCKS FAILED WHEN ATTEMPTING TO LOCK THE DOORS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THE DOOR LOCKS WERE REPLACED PER AN UNKNOWN NHTSA CAMPAIGN. THE FAILURE RECURRED. IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE DOOR WINDOW FAILED TO ALIGN WHEN ATTEMPTING TO ROLL IT UP OR DOWN. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V689000 (VISIBILITY). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 58,109.
AT 40,000 MILES I NOTICED FOR THE FIRST TIME A CLUNKING NOISE IN THE STEERING COLUMN WHEN I TURNED THE STEERING WHEEL RIGHT OR LEFT WHILE AT A SLOW SPEED. OVER THE NEXT FEW WEEKS IT WORSENED. I LOOKED UP THE ISSUE ON THE INTERNET AND FOUND DOZEN OF SIMILAR OCCURRENCES IN THIS SAME MODEL WITH VEHICLE OWNERS REPORTING HAVING TO REPLACE THE STEERING SHAFT. SOMETIMES IF LEFT LONG ENOUGH, I READ THAT THIS HAS LEAD TO STEERING FAILURE. I TOOK THE HIGHLANDER TO MY DEALER TODAY WHO DETERMINED THE STEERING SHAFT REQUIRED REPLACEMENT WHICH WILL COST AROUND $600. THIS TO ME IS A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE WHO KNOWS WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF I HAD LET THIS GO. I HAVE MAINTAINED THIS CAR EXACTLY AS RECOMMENDED IN THE OWNERS MANUAL. THIS DOES NOT SEEM LIKE THIS IS NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. I HAVE OWNED OVER A DOZEN VEHICLES IN THE LAST 40 YEARS AND HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED A PROBLEM WITH THE STEERING SHAFT. I AM CURIOUS WITH SO MANY OTHER OCCURRENCES OF THIS SAFETY ISSUE BY OTHER VEHICLE OWNERS WHY THIS HASN'T RESULTED IN A RECALL TO REPAIR ALL HIGHLANDERS OF THIS VINTAGE WITH THIS STEERING SHAFT.
RE: OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM, SRS, ZERO POINT CALIBRATION SAFETY ISSUE. OWNERS WILL BE RELUCTANT TO SPEND $130+ AT THE DEALER FOR CALIBRATION. LOCAL REPAIR SHOPS IS NOT EQUIPPED TO DO THE CALIBRATION. MUST BE A DEALER. I SPENT THE MONEY. I KNOW OF OTHERS WHO HAVE NOT. THIS VEHICLE HAS 49000 MILES ON IT. THE PASSENGER SEAT IS INFREQUENTLY USED. THE WARNING LIGHTS AND DISPLAY WENT OFF JUST AFTER SOMEONE SAT IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT WITH THIS SEAT SENSOR SYSTEM. LOTS OF PEOPLE COMPLAINING ONLINE ABOUT THE NEED TO RE-CALIBRATE.
KLUNK SOUND AND FEELING IN STEERING WHEEL STARTED AROUND 48000 MILE AT 51000 TOLD BY DEALER THE INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT NEEDED REPLACING. THIS SEEMS TO BE AND ON GOING PROBLEM WITH TOYOTA CARS
LIFT GATE HANDLE LITERALLY FELL OFF AND BROKE AS WE WERE CLOSING THE DOOR USING THE POWER BUTTON ON THE REAR DOOR. SCREW JUST FELL OUT OF ITS ATTACHMENT. UNABLE TO USE POWER LIFT GATE FUNCTION. PART OF THE REAR DOOR AREA WHERE THE HINGE IS ATTACHED IS WARPED, POSSIBLY STRUCTURAL ISSUES.
PLACED VEHICLE IN PARK IN GARAGE AND TOOK FOOT OFF BRAKE. I OPENED THE CAR DOOR TO MAKE SURE IN WAS PARKED STRAIGHT, AND THE CAR BEGAN ROLLING BACKWARDS. THEM CAR ROLLED ABOUT A FOOT, WITH THE DOOR STRIKING A GARAGE PILLAR BEFORE I COULD APPLY THE BRAKES. DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE WAS ONLY COSMETIC, BUT THE EVENT WAS UNNERVING AND POTENTIALLY VERY DANGEROUS.
THE SUN VISORS ARE BOTH BROKEN AND ARE A SAFETY HAZARD. THE DRIVERS VISOR HAS BEEN DEFECTIVE FOR TIME. THE PASSENGER VISOR JUST BROKE RECENTLY. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD AND AM SURPRISED I HAVE NOT RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE. I HAVE WORN OUT LOTS OF VEHICLES, BUT NEVER THE SUN VISORS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE SUN ROOF NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 53,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.

FINALLY STOPPED WORKING ALL TOGETHER IN AUGUST 2015.TOOK TO MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP TO SEE WHY IT WAS NOT WORKING THEY DIAGNOSED IT AS A BROKEN MOTOR.I WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE COST TO FIX IT.SINCE IT IS NOW OUT OF WARRANTY. CONTACTED THE TOYOTA CORPORATION THEY WENT OVER MY COMPLAINT AND SAID THEY WOULD NOT COVER IT UNDER WARRANTY EVEN THOUGH THERE IS A TOYOTA SERVICE BULLETIN ON IT IN 2012 AND MANY CLASS ACTION LAW SUITS FILED ON IT.
THE ELECTRONIC DOOR LOCK (DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR) ON MY 2012 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER RECENTLY BEGAN TO HAVE PROBLEMS; IT WORKED INTERMITTENTLY FOR A SHORT TIME, THEN CEASED WORKING AT ALL. AFTER A RECENT SERVICE TRIP, TOYOTA QUOTED ME OVER $500 TO REPLACE THE DOOR ACTUATOR AND LABOR. I REALIZE THIS SEEMS LIKE A SMALL ISSUE. BUT I, AND MY FAMILY, HAVE OWNED TOYOTAS PREVIOUSLY AND HAVE HAD THE SAME ISSUE, EVEN WITH DIFFERENT MODELS. I CAN'T HELP BUT FEEL THAT TOYOTA IS MAKING A DEFECTIVE PRODUCT AND I, AS A CONSUMER, AM FOOTING THE BILL FOR THEIR FAULTY PART. MOREOVER, A SIMPLE INTERNET SEARCH FINDS THAT THIS PROBLEM IS UBIQUITOUS; THERE ARE MYRIAD FORUMS DEDICATED TO FINDING A SOLUTION. I FEEL THAT THIS MAY EVEN JUSTIFY A RECALL.
THE SUN GLASS HOLDER DOES NOT STAY LATCHED. IT WILL FALL AND PARTIALLY OBSCURES THE REAR VIEW MIRROR
REAR LIFTGATE ARM DETACHED FROM DOOR. THE BOLT THAT ATTACHES THE LIFTGATE ARM TO THE DOOR STRIPPED. THE PIECES SHOT OFF FROM THE VEHICLE WILE THE ARM WAS ATTEMPTING TO CLOSE THE GATE.
THE REAR PASSENGER DOOR LOCK NO LONGER WORKS. IT HAS TO BE MANUALLY LOCKED AND UNLOCKED. I SEE THAT MANY OTHER PEOPLE HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THE SAME TYPE FAILURE IN THEIR VEHICLES AT APPROXIMATELY THE SAME MILEAGE-RIGHT AROUND THE TIME THE WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED OR SOON AFTER. IT SEEMS THAT THIS IS A COMMON ENOUGH PROBLEM THAT IT SHOULD BE FIXED AT TOYOTA'S EXPENSE.
ON (OR ABOUT) THE LAST WEEK OF MAY 2015, I HAD MY AUTO SERVICED AT THE DEALSHIP. I WAS ADVISED THAT THE 'THROTTLE BODY' NEEDED 'CLEANING' AND THIS WAS DONE BY THE DEALERSHIP AT THAT TIME. ON JUNE 4, 2015, I WAS BACKING INTO A PARKING SPOT ON A PARKING LOT, WIITH THE CAR 'COASTING' BACK AND MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE. ABOUT HALF WAY INTO THE 'SPOT' THE CAR ENGINE SUDDELY ACCELLERATED AND I HAD TO USE EXTREME PRESSURE ON THE BRAKE PEDAL TO OBTAIN A 'MINIMUM' OF SLOWING. THE CAR ONLY CAME TO A STOP WHEN THE REAR TIRES, MADE CONTACT WITH AN 'IN-PLACE' CEMENT PARKING BARRIER AND THE ENGINE ACCELERATION ONLY CEASED WHEN I PUT THE CAR IN 'PARK' GEAR. IT HAS NOT OCCURED SINCE, NOR HAS IT EVER OCCURED WHILE DRIVING FORWARD. I AM A RETIRED POLICE OFFICER WITH YEARS OF TRAINING IN DRIVING AND DRIVER SAFETY, AND AM CERTAIN OF THIS ACTION OCURRING AS I HAVE DESCRIBED.

NO PRIOR HISTORY OF HYBRID PROBLEMS DURING PREVIOUS 65,000 MILES. ON MONDAY MORNING, THE HIGHLANDER HYBRID STARTED UP FINE. AFTER WARMING UP FOR 5 MINUTES TO SCRAPE OFF SNOW, SHIFTED TO DRIVE AND BEGAN DRIVING. CAR SHUT DOWN AFTER ABOUT 12 FEET. CAR WOULD NOT RESTART. WARNING MESSAGE APPEARED ON DISPLAY, INDICATING HYBRID SYSTEM PROBLEM. AAA CAME, PUT ON FLATBED, AND TOOK TO NEAREST DEALERSHIP. DEALERSHIP WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE CAUSE OR FIX PROBLEM FOLLOWING 6+ HOURS OF TROUBLESHOOTING BY THEIR HYBRID EXPERT YESTERDAY. THEY INDICATED IT COULD BE SOMETHING IN THE INVERTER, BUT THAT IT MAY NOT BE COVERED BY EXISTING EXTENDED WARRANTY, AND THAT WE MAY WANT TO CONTACT OUR INSURANCE COMPANY. AWAITING CALL BACK. AFTER RESEARCHING ON SAFECAR.GOV, THIS SOUNDS SIMILAR TO RECALL 13V396000 FOR 2006-10 HIGHLANDERS, AND 14V053000 FOR 2010-14 PRIUS. WE HOPE TOYOTA DOES THE RIGHT THING FOR US, AND FOR OTHERS WITH THE SAME DESIGN OR MANUFACTURING ISSUE. *TR

WHEN IN THE USED POSITION IT GOES AGAINST THE WINDSHIELD GIVING LITTLE BENEFIT AS IT IS TOO HIGH TO BLOCK SUN AT SUNSET OR SUNRISE. IT WILL NOT STAY IN A FULL DOWN POSITION. THE INTERNAL SPRING HOLDS THE SUN VISOR IN THESE 2 POSITIONS ONLY. IN AN ACCIDENT IT MAY POSE A CUTTING PROBLEM ON FOREHEAD IN THE RETRACTED/STOWED POSITION. THE SUN VISOR?S SPRING MECHANISM APPEARED TO ROTATE OUT OF POSITION UPON NORMAL USE. IT APPEARS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM AS TO MANY POSTS ABOUT THIS ISSUE. DEALER CONTACTED ABOUT ISSUE AND CLAIMED IT WASN'T COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. *TR

2012 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER LIMITED DOOR LOCK ACTUATORS BEGAN TO FAIL AT ABOUT 40K MILES. THE INITIAL FAILURE BEGAN WITH RT FRONT PASSENGER DOOR, BUT ALL FOUR DOORS BEGAN TO FAIL TO LOCK OR UNLOCK INTERMITTENTLY BY SMART KEY REMOTE OR BY DRIVER SIDE DOOR CONTROLS (SOMETIMES ALL THE DOORS WOULD FAIL TO UNLOCK). EMERGENCY ACCESS TO ANY OF THE PASSENGERS WOULD BE A CONCERN. AT 47K MILES, TWO OF THE DOORS' ACTUATORS (RT FRONT PASSENGER & LT REAR PASSENGER) HAD TOTALLY FAILED, AND ARE BEING REPLACED BY DEALERSHIP AT OWNER'S EXPENSE OF $900 PLUS $125 DIAGNOSTIC FEE. WEB RESEARCH OF MULTIPLE TOYOTA AND AUTOMOTIVE FORUMS HAVE REVEALED THAT SIMILAR DOOR ACTUATOR FAILURES HAVE OCCURRED WITH OTHER TOYOTA MODELS AND YEARS, MANY REPORTING FAILURES THAT OCCUR IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING EXPIRATION OF WARRANTY AT 3YRS/36K MILES. BASED ON OTHER TOYOTA OWNERS' REPORTS ON THIS ISSUE, WE ARE CONCERNED THAT THE OTHER TWO DOOR ACTUATORS ARE LIKELY TO FAIL IN THE NEAR FUTURE. *TR

I OPENED THE POWER REAR DOOR BY DEPRESSING THE SWITCH NEXT TO THE STEERING WHEEL AND THE DOOR BEGAN TO OPEN, MADE A CLUNKING NOISE, AND CLOSED ITSELF. I EXITED THE VEHICLE AND MANUALLY OPENED THE REAR DOOR AT WHICH TIME I NOTICED THE LIFTGATE ARM (WITH THE SCREW AND WASHER STILL ATTACHED TO THE EXPOSED END) HAD BECOME DETACHED FROM THE DOOR. DESPITE HAVING 55K+ MILES, MY HIGHLANDER IS JUST OVER 2 YEARS OLD AND THERE HAS NOT BEEN EXCESSIVE USAGE OF THE POWER DOOR. I'LL BE TAKING IT TO THE NEAREST DEALER FOR ASSESSMENT. *TR
VEHICLE GOT STUCK IN SHALLOW WET SAND, WITHIN LESS THAN A COUPLE MINS OF ATTEMPTS TO MOVE FORWARD AND BACKWARD BY SPINNING WHEELS , THE CAR STARTED SMOKING AND BECAME FULLY ENGULFED IN FLAMES. THE ISSUE IS THE LITTLE THAT IT TOOK TO START A FIRE LIKE THIS - PERHAPS SOME COMPONENT NEEDS TO HAVE SAFETY FEATURE ADDED OR STERN WARNING COMMUNICATED AND POSTED IN THE CAR OF THIS DANGER.
