THE HEAD LIGHTS ON MY 2006 TOYOTA PRIUS GO OUT AFTER A PERIOD OF TIME DRIVING. IF YOU TURN THEM OFF AND THEN BACK ON THEY COME BACK ON FOR A WHILE THEN GO OUT AGAIN. I HAVE HAD BOTH THE BULBS AND CONTROL MODULE REPLACED ANT THE TUNE OF $500 BUT THE PROBLEM STILL PERSIST. *TR
MY 2006 TOYOTA PRIUS BEGAN EXPERIENCING SUDDEN HEADLIGHT FAILURE AFTER 20,000 MILES. I WOULD BE DRIVING AT NIGHT AND SUDDENLY BOTH HEADLIGHTS WOULD GO OUT, I WOULD SWITCH THEM OFF AND ON AGAIN, AND THEY WOULD COME BACK ON. SOMETIMES I WOULD BE DRIVING ON CITY STREETS, NOT AWARE THAT THEY HAD GONE OFF, AND OTHER DRIVERS WOULD STOP ME AND TELL ME THAT MY HEADLIGHTS WERE OFF. I WOULD CHECK THE SWITCH, SEE THAT THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO BE ON, TOGGLE THE SWITCH AND THEY WOULD COME ON. I TOOK THE CAR TO MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER WHERE I HAVE ALL MY MAINTENANCE DONE. AFTER INVESTIGATING FOR A FEW DAYS, THEY REPLACED BOTH H.I.D. HEADLIGHTS AND CORRECTED THE PROBLEM. NOW, 20,000 MILES LATER, I'M EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM. MY LEFT HEADLIGHT SUDDENLY WILL GO OUT AND HAVE TO BE TURNED OFF AND THEN ON AGAIN TO LIGHT. THIS HAPPENS EVERY FEW MINUTES, MOST ALARMINGLY ON CROWDED FREEWAYS AT NIGHT. I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALER, AND THEY REPLACED THE LEFT HEADLIGHT. THEY DIDN'T CHARGE ME FOR THE LIGHT BECAUSE OF MY PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE, BUT I DID HAVE TO PAY THE LABOR FEES, SINCE THE CAR IS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY, BUT EXHIBITING THE SAME PROBLEMS THAT IT DID WHEN IT WAS. I'M VERY CONCERNED THAT THIS IS GOING TO CONTINUE TO BE A DANGEROUS AND COSTLY PROBLEM. I DON'T FEEL CONFIDENT THAT MY CAR IS SAFE TO DRIVE AT NIGHT, BECAUSE UNLESS YOU ARE LOOKING FOR THE PROBLEM, HEADLIGHT FAILURE IS SOMETHING THAT YOU MIGHT NOT REALIZE HAS OCCURRED UNTIL IT'S TOO LATE. ALSO, IT DOESN'T SEEM REASONABLE THAT I'M SUPPOSED TO REPLACE A VERY EXPENSIVE PART EVERY 20,000 MILES OR MORE TO CONTINUE TO OPERATE MY CAR SAFELY. *TR
2006 TOYOTA PRIUS WITH HID LIGHTS. AT 30,000 MILES, IN DECEMBER 2007, THE PASSENGER SIDE LIGHT BEGAN TO TURN OFF BY ITSELF. IT WOULD TURN BACK ON IF WE TURNED THE LIGHTS COMPLETELY OFF, THEN ON AGAIN (DANGEROUS AT NIGHT, OF COURSE). AT 35,000 MILES, THE DEALERSHIP ESTIMATED $350 TO REPLACE THE BULB, BUT THEN REPLACED BULB UNDER WARRANTY. AT 50,000 MILES THE DRIVERS SIDE HEADLIGHT BEGAN TO DO THE SAME THING. WE COULD NOT AFFORD TO PAY FOR THE REPLACEMENT SO HAVE BEEN TURNING OFF AND ON TO REMEDY. LAST WEEK THE PASSENGERS SIDE HEADLIGHT STARTED DOING IT AGAIN, EVEN THOUGH IT IS ONLY 1 YEAR OLD. THERE ARE TIMES WE HAVE ONE HEADLIGHT, AND TIMES WE HAVE NO HEADLIGHTS OTHER THAN THE FOG LIGHTS. WE HAVE BEEN STOPPED BY POLICE AND GIVEN A WARNING ABOUT A HEADLIGHT BEING OUT. THIS IS A DANGEROUS SITUATION AND WE THINK THAT IT CANNOT BE THE HID LAMPS THEMSELVES, AS THEY COME BACK ON AGAIN WHEN WE RECYCLE THE SWITCH. IT MUST BE A COMPUTER OR RELAY. HEAD LIGHTS AND REAR LIGHTS SUDDENLY WENT OUT WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AT NIGHT. A TRACTOR TRAILER ALMOST KILLED ME AS A RESULT OF THE LIGHT FAILURE. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED. THEY TOLD ME TO CALL CORPORATE. " IT IS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY" WAS THE COMMENT MADE. I CALLED CORPORATE AND WAS GIVEN A REFERENCE NUMBER.200712041057. I WAS TOLD THAT SOMEONE FROM THE DEALER, ATLANTA TOYOTA WOULD CONTACT ME AND ASSIST ME WITH THIS PROBLEM. NO ONE HAS CALLED. THE CORPORATE OFFICE ALSO STATED SOMEONE WOULD CALL. I AM STILL WAITING. I WILL HOLD TOYOTA LIABLE IF I AM INJURED AS A RESULT OF LIGHT FAILURE WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND SHOULD BE ADDRESSED IMMEDIATELY!!!!. THE DEALERSHIP, ATLANTA TOYOTA DOES NOT GIVE A ?!@#$% ABOUT MY SAFETY. THEY DID NOT OFFER TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM AND RANDY PENLAND STATES HE " THOUGHT IT WAS A RELAY PROBLEM. I ALSO FILED A COMPLAINT WITH THE CUSTOMER RELATIONS MANAGER CAROLE NEWCOMB. I TOLD THEM EXACTLY WHAT I AM TELLING YOU. FRANKLY THEIR RESPONSE WAS UNACCEPTABLE. ALL THEY WANTED WAS MY MONEY WHEN I PURCHASED IT. NO CUSTOMER SURVIVE AT ALL. PLEASE LET THEM KNOW. NEEDLESS TO SAY I WILL NOT BE RETURNING TO THAT DEALERSHIP. NEVER. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA PRIUS. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, THE EXTERIOR LIGHTS ON THE PASSENGER SIDE LOST POWER. AS A RESULT, THE CONTACT COULD ONLY DRIVE WITH THE HIGH BEAMS ACTIVATED. HE STATED THAT THE EXTERIOR LIGHTING ON THE PASSENGER SIDE HAS BEEN LOSING POWER INTERMITTENTLY FOR THE PAST YEAR. THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN TO THE DEALER ON THREE OCCASIONS. THE FIRST TWO TIMES THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED. ON THE THIRD VISIT, THE DEALER STATED THAT THE COMPUTER THAT CONTROLS THE HID HEADLIGHTS WAS DEFECTIVE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MECHANIC ALSO STATED THAT THE HID HEADLAMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN REPAIRED, BUT THE MANUFACTURER HAS NOT BEEN NOTIFIED. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 51,056 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 38,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE DRIVER'S SIDE HEADLIGHT INTERMITTENTLY FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THE FAILURE WAS UNABLE TO BE DUPLICATED. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR THE SAME FAILURE ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS AND ON ONE OCCASION THE DRIVER'S SIDE HEADLIGHT WAS REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE WAS NOT CORRECTED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 29,580 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 132,855. *TR
IN NOVEMBER OF 2007, I WAS DRIVING MY WIFE'S 2006 TOYOTA PRIUS TO TAKE THE FAMILY TO LUNCH. I APPROACHED THE INTERSECTION, I WAS ON THE CEL PHONE, AND THE BRAKES FAILED TO WORK AND I CRASHED INTO A TRUCK WHO WAS OUT IN THE INTERSECTION, CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE FRONT END OF THE PRIUS. MY WIFE HAD BEEN COMPLAINING FOR MONTHS THAT THE PRIUS HAD BRAKE FAILURE INCIDENTS ONCE A MONTH. I WOULD TEST DRIVE THE CAR, AND COULD NOT GET THE BRAKES TO FAIL. THAT IS UNTIL THE INCIDENT MENTIONED ABOVE HAPPENED. I IMMEDIATELY DROVE THE CAR TO THE TOYOTA DEALER. I INFORMED THEM THAT THE BRAKES FAILED. I INFORMED THEM THAT THEY WOULD NEED TO DRIVE THE CAR EVERY DAY FOR A MONTH BEFORE THEY COULD GET THE BRAKES TO FAIL. THEY KEPT THE CAR FOR A MONTH, BUT DID NOT TEST IT AS I RECOMMENDED......AND INFORMED ME THAT THEY COULD NOT SEE ANY PROBLEM, FORCING ME TO PAY OUT OF POCKET FOR THE DAMAGES TO THE CAR $1,566.57....AS WELL AS FOR THE $1,440.38 RENTAL CAR BILL. I IMMEDIATELY PICKED UP THE CAR AND DROVE IT TO ANOTHER MANUFACTURERS DEALERSHIP AND TRADED IT IN ON HONDA ACCORD. THERE WAS NO WAY I WAS GOING TO RISK MY FAMILIES LIVES, DRIVING THAT CAR ANOTHER DAY. HEADLIGHTS ON 2006 TOYOTA PRIUS INTERMITTENTLY SHUT OFF. FIRST RIGHT SIDE, THAN LEFT. ONCE LIGHTS SHUT OFF, THE SWITCH CAN BE TURNED OFF AND ON AND THEREAFTER LIGHTS WILL STAY ON FOR A SHORT WHILE THAN SHUT OFF AGAIN. FROM MY READING ON THE WEB, THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED CASE, AS OTHER OWNERS OF THE 2006 ARE HAVING THE SAME IDENTICAL PROBLEM. *TR
CONTINUAL PROBLEM WITH HEADLIGHTS ON MY 2006 PRIUS GOING OUT. I TOOK MY CAR INTO CABE TOYOTA IN LONG BEACH A FEW TIMES AND THEY COULD NOT FIND THE PROBLEM OR RECREATE IT. I HAVE BEEN HAVE TROUBLE WITH IT FOR 6 MONTHS , FINALLY ON MY LAS VISTS TOYOTA TECH DEPARTMENTS TOLD THEM TO CHECK GROUNDING AND IF NOT AT FAULT JUST TO REPLACE THE LAMP ASSEMBLY NOW THE OTHER HEADLIGHT S GOING OUT RANDOMLY. REPLACING THE HEADLIGHT I DO NOT BELIEVE WILL SOLVE THIS SAFETY RELATED ISSUE. I AM STARTING TO HEAR THAT THIS IS A WIDE SPREAD PROBLEM WITH THE 2006 PRIUS, TOYOTA IS RATHER SILENT ON THIS ISSUE. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE AUTOMATIC WINDOW UP CONTROL ROLLED UP THE DRIVER SIDE WINDOW AND WOULD NOT STOP UNTIL THE WINDOW WAS COMPLETELY UP. THE WINDOW WOULD CONTINUE TO CLOSE EVEN IF THERE WAS AN OBJECT IN ITS PATH. THIS FAILURE HAS OCCURRED NUMEROUS TIMES. THE CONTACT HAS NOT SPOKEN WITH TOYOTA. THE VIN AND ENGINE SIZE WERE UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 49,922.
WHEN THE LIGHTS ARE FIRST TURNED ON, THERE IS A FEW SECONDS OF FULL BRIGHTNESS, THEN DIMMING IN THE RIGHT LIGHT, AND THEN AFTER A MINUTE OR TWO, IT GOES OUT. IT COMES BACK ON IF YOU TURN OFF THE LIGHTS AND THEN BACK ON. I FIRST NOTICED THIS AROUND 40,000 MILES. 2006 TOYOTA PRIUS HEADLIGHTS INTERMITTENTLY GO ON AND OFF, USUALLY ONE AT A TIME, BUT SOMETIMES BOTH AT ONCE. TURNING THEM OFF AND THEN BACK ON TEMPORARILY RESOLVES THE PROBLEM. THE PROBLEM WITH INTERMITTENT HID HEADLIGHT OPERATION APPEARS TO BE COMMON WITH THE PRIUS, BUT IS ALSO OCCURRING WITH OTHER MODELS. I OWN A SIENNA WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. THE DEALER FIRST REPLACED THE HID COMPUTER $1,100, THEN THE BULB $400, AND NOW TELLS ME I NEED A WHOLE NEW HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY FOR ANOTHER $1,100. THIS IS ALL IN THREE MONTHS. THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN SAID "IF ITS NOT WORKING, GIVE IT A LITTLE HIT WITH YOUR FIST." NOT EASY TO DO ON THE HIGHWAY. THE POINT IS THAT INOPERABLE HEADLIGHTS ARE A SAFETY ISSUE, POLICE OFFICERS CAN STOP YOU FOR IT, AND YOU CANNOT PASS INSPECTION WITHOUT OPERATING HEADLIGHTS. READING THE POSTS ON THIS SITE, IT IS CLEAR THAT THERE IS A MANUFACTURING DEFECT THAT IS CONTRIBUTING TO THE PROBLEM. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA PRIUS. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL ACTIVATED, THE STEERING FAILED TO RESPOND WHILE SWERVING LEFT TO AVOID STRIKING A DEER. THE CONTACT LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND IT VEERED TO THE RIGHT. ALL FOUR TIRES BLEW OUT AND CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO ROLL OVER THREE TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A STORAGE TOWING SHOP. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED AND INJURIES WERE SUSTAINED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 50,000.
I CAME TO A STOP AND THE CAR ACTUALLY CAME TO A STOP AND THEN SUDDENLY STARTED CREEPING TOWARDS THE OTHER CAR. I THOUGHT I WAS ACCIDENTALLY PRESSING THE GAS PEDAL AS WELL BUT I WASN'T SO I STARTED PRESSING HARD ON THE BRAKE AND NOTHING! I STARTED PUMPING THE BRAKES AND THE CAR STOPPED. THEN I CONTINUED MY DRIVE AS USUAL WITHOUT IT HAPPENING AGAIN. NO LIGHTS CAME ON, NOTHING UNUSUAL. JUST WEIRD. CAR HAS ALMOST 36K MILES 06 MODEL. *JB
ALL TOYOTA PRIUS VEHICLES SINCE 2004-- CANNOT SEE THE DASH BOARD DURING ALL BRIGHT, SUNNY DAYS. CANNOT SEE SPEEDOMETER- DO NOT KNOW THE SPEED OF THE VEHICLE. VERY DANGEROUS !!!!!!! AT NIGHT, A WIDE GREEN SLASH APPEARS ON THE WINDSHIELD AT DRIVERS EYE LEVEL. IMPAIRS NIGHT VISION. AGAIN, DANGEROUS -IMPEDES RIVERS ABILITY TO SEE PROPERLY. *JB

I OWN A 2006 TOYOTA PRIUS. I AM HAVING PROBLEMS AS WELL AS MANY OTHER 2006 PRIUS OWNERS WITH THE HEADLIGHTS TURNING OFF WHILE DRIVING. THE ISSUE IS RESOLVED FOR A SHORT TIME BY TURNING THE LIGHTS OFF AND BACK ON AGAIN- UNTIL THE LIGHTS TURN OFF AGAIN A FEW MINUTES LATER. I HAVE HAD IT IN TO 2 TOYOTA DEALERS AND THEY ARE STATING THAT IT IS BAD LIGHTBULBS. IN ORDER TO REPLACE THESE LIGHTBULBS (2) IT IS $900!! AND MIGHT I ADD THAT THE TOYOTA DEALERS NO NOT CARRY THESE LIGHTBULBS IN STOCK. THEREFORE, THIS LEADS ME TO BELIEVE THAT THESE LIGHTBULBS ON A 2006 NEW PRIUS SHOULD NOT BE GOING OUT WHILE DRIVING IN THE DARK AND ARE NOT A REGULAR REPLACEMENT ITEM IF TOYOTA DOES NOT EVEN KEEP THE LIGHTBULBS IN STOCK. I CURRENTLY CAN NOT DRIVE MY CAR AT NIGHT BECAUSE IT IS A SAFETY HAZARD. MY LIGHTS COULD TURN OFF AT ANY SECOND AND I COULD EASILY GET HIT/AND OR KILLED IN AN ACCIDENT DUE TO FAILING HEADLIGHTS. I AM CURRENTLY IN THE PROCESS OF DEALING WITH TOYOTA AND THIS ISSUE. I ALSO HAVE THE EXTENDED WARRANTY ON MY CAR WHICH I HAVE SPENT A LOT OF MONEY FOR AND THEY ARE CLAIMING THIS IS NOT COVERED UNDER THE WARRANTY. I AM SORRY BUT IF THERE ARE NUMEROUS 2006 PRIUS OUT THERE THAT ARE HAVING THIS DEFECT, THEN IT SHOULD BE TURNED INTO A RECALL RATHER THAN HAVE EVERYONE PAY FOR THEIR OWN NEW $900 LIGHTBULBS! I NEVER WOULD HAVE BOUGHT THIS CAR IF I HAD KNOWN I WOULD HAVE TO REPLACE SPECIAL LIGHTBULBS EVERY 2 YEARS FOR $900! *TR
HARD TIME GETTING GAS IN THE VEHICLE. FOR EXAMPLE, I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALERSHIP TO LET THE GAS GAUGE GET DOWN TO 1/4 TANK OR LESS AND FILL THE TANK SLOWLY AS THERE MAY BE AIR BEHIND THE BLADDER THAT IS IN THE GAS TANK ON THE PRIUS. ABOUT 2 MILES FROM THE GAS TANK THE "ADD FUEL" WARNING CAME ON IN THE VEHICLE. UPON PULLING INTO THE GAS STATION AND ADDING GAS INTO THE VEHICLE I WAS ONLY ABLE TO GET SLIGHTLY OVER 4 GALLONS INTO THE TANK. THE PRIUS HAD AN 11.9 GALLON GAS TANK. SO IF THE GAS WAS REALLY BELOW 1/4 TANK, WHY AM I ONLY GETTING 4 GALLONS IN THE TANK. EVEN IF THE 1/4 TANK MEANS THERE ARE 3 GALLONS LEFT IN THE TANK, THOSE 3 PLUS THE 4 THAT I GOT IN THE TANK STILL ONLY ADD UP TO 7 GALLONS. WHAT HAPPENED TO THE OTHER 4+ GALLONS THAT I SHOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO PUT IN THE TANK? THIS HAPPENS EVERY TIME I PUT GAS IN THE VEHICLE. SO FAR THE DEALERSHIP HAS TOLD ME ITS BECAUSE ITS COLD OUTSIDE THAT THIS HAPPENS... WELL HOW DO THEY EXPLAIN IT IN SUMMER? IT WAS OVER 60 DEGREES WHEN I GOT GAS LAST THURSDAY. THE HAVE TOLD ME THAT I HAVE TO PUT THE GAS IN SLOWLY, AND THEY HAVE RE-SET THE GAS GAUGE. *TR
MULTIPLE INTERMITTENT OUTAGES OF PASSENGER SIDE HID HEADLIGHT WHILE DRIVING. SERVICED BY A DEALER TWICE WITH DEALERS NOT ABLE TO REPEAT OUTAGE. PULLED OVER BY POLICE OFFICER FOR OUTAGE. *TR
BOTH HEADLAMPS WOULD GO OUT INTERMITTENTLY, TURNING THEM OFF AND BACK ON WOULD WORK FOR A WHILE, BUT EVENTUALLY OVER A 2 WEEK PERIOD WOULD NOT COME BACK ON. TOYOTA FIRST DENIED THE PROBLEM TELLING ME IT WOULD COST 750 EACH BULB PLUS LABOR TO FIX. I FOUND ON A TOYOTA WEB SITE THE PROBLEM WITH 2006 PRIUS HEADLAMPS SHOWED THE DEALER AND CALLED AN 800 #. I WAS ASSIGNED A CASE # AND IN A SHORT TIME MY DEALER CALLED AND SAID THEY COULD FIX THE PROBLEM FOR LABOR COST ONLY ABOUT $198. IF THIS PROBLEM GOES TO A RECALL STATUS THEY WILL REIMBURSE MY LABOR COST. I NOW SEE 16 COMPLAINTS FOR THE SAME HEADLAMP PROBLEM ON 2006 PRIUS ON THIS SITE. *TR
I HAVE A BRAKE PROBLEM WITH MY 2006 TOYOTA PRIUS. SEVERAL TIMES (AT LEAST 6 TIMES) THE BRAKES HAVE FAILED TO FUNCTION WHEN I TRY TO STOP. THE CAR DOES NOT RESPOND WHEN I PRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL AND CONTINUES TO MOVE FORWARD SEVERAL SECONDS. SO FAR I HAVE BEEN LUCKY AND NOT HAVE HAD AN ACCIDENT BUT IT HAS BEEN CLOSE SEVERAL TIMES. I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP TWICE BUT THEY HAVE NOT FOUND ANY PROBLEMS. I HAVE OWNED A 2006 PRIUS SINCE FEBRUARY, 2006. I NOTICED (AND SO DID THE POLICE WHO STOPPED ME ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS!) THE HEADLIGHTS WORKING INTERMITTENTLY. THIS STARTED IN OCT. 2007. SINCE THEN I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE 3 OF THE HEADLIGHTS AND 2 OF THE HEADLIGHT MODULES AT A COST OF $1589.35 TOTAL. THE HEADLIGHTS STOP WITH NO WARNING. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE, AS I DRIVE AT NIGHT WITH MY CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILD. THE LIGHTS HAVE ONLY STOPPED ONE AT A TIME, NEVER AT THE SAME TIME, AND I PRAY THAT THEY NEVER DO. I HAVE CONTACTED TOYOTA HEADQUARTERS AND THEY ARE REVIEWING MY CASE TO SEE IF THEY CAN REFUND SOME OF MY OUT OF POCKET EXPENSES FOR THIS. WE HAVE HAD SEVERAL HEAD LIGHTS ON OUR PRUIS STOP WORKING. USUALLY YOU HAVE TO TURN THE LIGHTS ON AND OFF TO GET THEM TO GO BACK ON WHEN THEY TURN OFF ON THEIR OWN. WE HAVE REPLACED THE HEADLIGHTS APPROX. 4 TIMES OVER THE YEARS AND AGAIN WE ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. I HAVE A 2006 PRIUS. THE HID HEADLIGHTS ARE NOT RELIABLE. THEY WORK SOMETIMES & SOMETIMES THEY DON'T. THE PROBLEM IS WITH THE HID BULB. THEY TURN OFF & ON UNEXPECTEDLY. THE DEALER PRICE TO REPLACE THE ONE BULB WAS $479. BOTH OF MY HEADLIGHT FAILED WITHIN A WEEK OF EACH OTHER. *TR
THREE WEEKS AFTER OBTAINING MY NEW 2006 PRIUS, THE RIGHT HEADLIGHT STARTED GOING OFF WHILE DRIVING. WHEN I TURNED THE LIGHTS OFF AND ON AGAIN, IT WOULD COME BACK ON. AFTER 3 TRIPS TO THE DEALERSHIP THEY REPLACED THE HEADLIGHT (I NOTICED THAT THE LIGHT WAS ALSO NOT AS BRIGHT AS THE OTHER LIGHT). THEN THE LEFT ONE STARTED DOING THE SAME, MANY TRIPS IN AND THEY REPLACED THAT ONE. THE PROBLEM WOULD STOP FOR A WHILE AFTER THE NEW HEADLIGHT THEN START AGAIN. LAST NIGHT I WAS DRIVING HOME AND WAS STOPPED BY POLICE. BOTH OF MY HEADLIGHTS HAD GONE OFF. SAME FIX, WAS TO TURN THE LIGHTS OFF AND THEN ON AGAIN. THERE IS NO WARNING LIGHT IN THE CAR, SO I HAVE NO IDEA IF THE LIGHTS ARE ON OR OFF, UNLESS I AM BEHIND A CAR IN WHICH I CAN SEE THE REFLECTION OF MY LIGHTS IN THEIR BUMPER. THIS IS VERY DISTURBING AND SCARY. MY CAR IS IN THE SHOP NOW AGAIN AND TOYOTA IS TELLING ME THAT IT IS "NORMAL " TO REPLACE THE HEADLIGHTS AFTER 50,000 MILES. THEY ARE STILL LOOKING AT IT AS A HEADLIGHT BULB PROBLEM. THEY ARE NOT LISTENING TO ME THAT THERE IS A MAJOR ISSUE WITH THE WIRING OR COMPUTER SOMEWHERE IN THE CAR. THE INTERNET IS FILLED WITH COMPLAINTS OF PRIUS HEADLIGHT PROBLEMS, BUT AS FAR AS I CAN TELL TOYOTA IS IGNORING IT. I HAVE EVEN BROUGHT THEM THE LISTS OFF OF THE INTERNET, AND THEY SAY THAT "EVERYONE COMPLAINS ON THE INTERNET". *TR
ON SEPTEMBER 23, 2007, I WAS TRAVELING ON I-70 RETURNING FROM BLOOMINGTON INDIANA TO WEBSTER GROVES MISSOURI. AS I WAS DRIVING THE ADD FUEL LIGHT CAME ON. BASED ON MY PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE, I KNEW I HAD AT LEAST 40 MILES. ALL OF A SUDDEN, ALL OF THE WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON AND THE CAR LOST POWER. LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO MANEUVER TO THE SHOULDER. I GOT THE CAR TO GO A LITTLE FURTHER BEFORE IT DIED ON THE RAMP OF THE NEXT EXIT. THE TOTAL MILES TRAVELED FROM THE TIME THE ADD FUEL LIGHT CAME ON UNTIL THE CAR COMPLETELY DIED WAS 18 MILES. I NOTIFIED TOYOTA AND THEIR RESPONSE WAS THAT I RAN OUT OF GAS. THEY TOLD ME I SHOULD HAVE 50 MILES OR SO FROM WHEN THE ADD FUEL LIGHT CAME ON BEFORE RUNNING OUT OF GAS. THEY COULD NOT EXPLAIN WHY I ONLY GOT 18 MILES. I TOLD THEM THAT I BELIEVE THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE FUEL SENSOR AND THAT THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE SINCE MY CAR DIED WHILE TRAVELING ON AN INTERSTATE. TOYOTA SAID IT WAS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE SINCE THEY HAVE NOT HAD MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS. FOR WHAT IT IS WORTH, IT WAS A VERY HOT DAY AND I HAD BEEN TRAVELING ABOUT 3 HOURS OR SO. MY GUESS IS THAT THE FUEL SENSOR IS NOT ACCURATE UNDER THESE CONDITIONS. I ASKED TOYOTA WHY I ONLY GOT 18 MILES AFTER THE ADD FUEL LIGHT CAME ON. THE REPRESENTATIVE COULD OFFER NO EXPLANATION. AT NO TIME DID TOYOTA CHECK THE FUEL SENSOR. *TR
HEADLIGHTS WENT OUT ON PRIUS 2006 MODEL. FIRST ONE WENT BAD, COMING ON AT TIMES; THEN THE OTHER ONE WENT BAD AND I WOULD BE DRIVING IN THE COMPLETE DARK-VERY SCARY. I HAD REPORTED IT TO THE TOYOTA DEALER AND THEY SAID NOTHING WAS WRONG AND THERE HAD NOT BEEN ANY SIMILAR PROBLEM REPORTED. I WENT BACK AGAIN THE NEXT WEEK WITH THE SAME COMPLAINT. THE SUPERVISOR OF MAINTENANCE SAID HE WOULD LOOK INTO IT. FINALLY, THE LAST TIME I TOLD THEM THAT IF I END UP IN A FATALITY D/T THIS PROBLEM WITH THE HEADLIGHTS, SOMEONE IN TOYOTA WILL BE IN DEEP TROUBLE. THAT IS WHEN THE SUPERVISOR TOOK CARE OF THE PROBLEM THE NEXT DAY. THE CAR WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY. SAME THING HAPPENED NEXT YEAR 2008. I WAS GOING APPROXIMATELY 3 TO 4 MILES PER HOUR TO MAKE A Y-TURN TO BACK INTO OUR DRIVEWAY AND WHEN I PUSHED DOWN ON THE BRAKE THE CAR THRUSTED FORWARD WHILE ON ELECTRIC WITH GREAT FORCE THROUGH THE NEIGHBOR'S SIX FOOT WOODEN FENCE WHERE THE CAR STOPPED (I DON'T KNOW IF IT STOPPED ON IT'S OWN OR GOT HUNG UP IN FENCE AND ALSO STUCK FROM HILL DECLINE.) I NEVER HAD A CHANCE TO TRY PUSHING DOWN ON THE BRAKE A SECOND TIME DUE TO THE FACT IT HAPPENED THAT FAST AND FORCE FULL. THE CAR WAS RUNNING ON ELECTRIC AND BARELY MOVING. I HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS WITH THE HID HEADLIGHTS ON MY 2006 PRIUS FOR OVER A YEAR. EACH TIME I TOOK THE CAR IN THE DEALER WAS NOT ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. WHEN I INVESTIGATED THIS FURTHER ON MY OWN AND WENT BACK TO THE DEALER I WAS INFORMED THAT THE BULBS ARE SOLD INDEPENDENTLY AND THAT THEY ARE $312 EACH, AND 1.5 HOURS OF LABOR TO INSTALL. I HAVE AN EXTENDED SERVICE PACKAGE (PLATINUM) THAT DOES NOT COVER LIGHT BULBS. I AM APPALLED THAT HEADLIGHTS THIS EXPENSIVE CAN HAVE CHRONIC ISSUES AFTER 1 AND 1/2 YEARS OF USE AND TOYOTA WILL NOT TAKE OWNERSHIP OF THE FACT THAT THERE IS A MANUFACTURER PROBLEM HERE. *TR
I WAS COMING TO A STOP ON A BUSY STREET. AS I APPLIED BRAKES, THE BRAKES DID NOT "CATCH." I COULDN'T AVOID THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME AS BOTH SURROUNDING LANES WERE FULL. I LITERALLY WATCHED HELPLESSLY AS I HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. MY CAR IS A 2006 TOYOTA PRIUS WITH 27,000 MILES ON IT. PROBLEM STARTED IN AUGUST 07 WITH DRIVER'S SIDE HEADLIGHT INTERMITTENTLY SHUTTING OFF. NO HIGH OR LOW BEAM, OFTEN VERY DIM. HEADLIGHT BULB REPLACED DUE TO SHORT CIRCUIT. HEADLIGHT FAILURE ON 2006 TOYOTA PRIUS. CAR WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WITH APPROXIMATELY 38,000 MILES AND THE DEALER BEAT ON THE HEADLIGHT UNIT AND ADVISED ME THAT IT NOW WORKED. AS THE MONTHS HAVE GONE BY, BOTH HEADLIGHT HAVE BEEN SHUTTING DOWN AT SEPARATE TIMES AND BY TURNING THE LIGHTS ON AND OFF THE HEADLIGHTS RETURN TO NORMAL. THE DEALER NOW ADVISES ME THAT HE "THINKS" THE BULBS NEED TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF ABOUT $400 EACH. I SEE ON THE INTERNET THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM ON THE 2006 PRIUS AND TOYOTA HAS DONE NOTHING TO PROTECT THE OWNERS FROM THIS POTENTIALLY LIFE THREATENING ISSUE. I BELIEVE IT IS MANDATORY THAT TOYOTA MAKE A RECALL OF ALL 2006 PRIUS MODELS ASAP TO REPAIR THIS PROBLEM BEFORE SERIOUS INJURY OR LOSS OF LIFE IS CAUSED BY LOSING THESE LIGHTS DURING BOTH NIGHT DRIVING AND DAY DRIVING WHEN USED AS AN EFFECTIVE MEANS OF LETTING OTHER DRIVERS SEE YOUR POSITION. *TR
I HAVE A 2006 PRIUS AND IN THE FALL OF 2007 THE HEADLIGHTS STARTED GOING OUT WHILE I WAS DRIVING. THE PROBLEM WAS FIXED BY TURNING THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH OFF AND ON. HOWEVER, THE PROBLEM PERSISTS. SOMETIMES THE LEFT WILL GO OUT SOMETIMES THE RIGHT WILL GO OUT AND SOMETIMES BOTH AT THE SAME TIME WHICH IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. AFTER SEVERAL TRIPS TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP MAINTENANCE DEPT. THEY COULD NOT DETERMINE THE PROBLEM AND SUGGESTED THAT I PURCHASE NEW HEADLIGHTS AT $300.00 EACH NOT INCLUDING LABOR. THEY COULDN'T GUARANTEE THAT THE BULBS WERE THE PROBLEM BUT THOUGHT IT WAS WORTH A TRY. I DIDN'T LIKE THE IDEA. THE HEADLIGHTS WERE LESS THAN 2 YEARS OLD AND HID LIGHTS ARE SUPPOSED TO HAVE A LONG LIFE. I HAVE SEEN WHERE OTHER OWNERS OF THE PRIUS WERE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE. WHEN HEADLIGHTS GO OFF WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT AND THE DRIVER CAN'T TELL IT IS DANGEROUS TO EVERYONE AROUND. IT IS ALSO A DRIVING VIOLATION AND WILL BE A PROBLEM WITH ANNUAL INSPECTIONS. TOYOTA SHOULD RECALL THE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY UNIT AND REPLACE THE FAULTY ONES BEFORE SOMEONE GETS SERIOUSLY HURT. *TR

TOYOTA IS AWARE OF THIS RAMPANT PROBLEM. THE SOLUTION FROM TOYOTA WAS TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY AT $1216. THIS PROBLEM SHOWED ITSELF SOON AFTER THE WARRANTY EXPIRED. PEOPLE ARE NOT GOING TO PAY THAT KIND OF MONEY TO REPAIR THIS DESIGN FLAW. THIS IS NOT JUST A BURNED OUT BULB. INSTEAD PEOPLE WILL CONTINUE TO ALLOW THESE LIGHTS TO CYCLE OFF AND WILL APPLY THE MANUAL OFF/ON. THIS CREATES AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SITUATION - ESPECIALLY WHEN BOTH HEADLIGHTS GO OUT AT THE SAME TIME AT NIGHT. TOYOTA SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO RECALL AND REPAIR THIS DESIGN FLAW. *TR
MY HEADLAMP WILL TURN OFF AT RANDOM TIMES. AT FIRST IT WAS JUST THE DRIVER'S SIDE HEADLAMP, NOW IT IS BOTH HEADLAMPS. IT OCCURS ALMOST DAILY. I TOOK MY CAR INTO THE DEALERSHIP AND TOLD THEM ABOUT THE ISSUE. THE REPLACEMENT OF THE HEADLAMPS WILL COST OVER $700. WHEN THE CAR WAS UNDER WARRANTY THEY FOUND NO ISSUES, AS SOON AS IT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY THEY WANTED TO REPLACE THEM. AFTER I DID NOT REPLACE THEM, ALL OF A SUDDEN THEY COULD RUN A DIAGNOSTICS TO DETERMINE IF THEY WERE FAULTY. WHERE WAS THIS DIAGNOSTICS THE FIRST TWO TIMES? *TR
WHILE UNDER WARRANTY, DRIVER SIDE HEADLIGHT FLICKERED AND WOULD GO OUT. IT WOULD ALWAYS COME BACK ON AFTER TURNING THE HEADLIGHTS OFF AND ON AGAIN. SAME THING HAPPENED A FEW MONTHS LATER WITH PASSENGER SIDE HEADLIGHT. DEALER REPLACED OR REPAIRED BOTH AT DIFFERENT TIMES WHILE UNDER WARRANTY. NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY, AND I HAVE PAID FOR A REPLACEMENT HEADLIGHT ONCE. AT PRESENT, BOTH HEADLIGHTS FLICKER AND GO OUT, NOW WITH REMARKABLE REGULARITY. FORTUNATELY, TURNING THEM OFF AND ON AGAIN CORRECTS THE PROBLEM FOR A FEW MINUTES, SO I HAVE NEVER BEEN FORCED TO STOP DRIVING AT NIGHT (ALTHOUGH I HAVE BEEN STOPPED FOR DRIVING WITH ONLY ONE HEADLIGHT AT TIMES). AT THIS TIME, I AM AT THE POINT WHERE I TURN MY HEADLIGHTS OFF AND ON EVERY FIVE MINUTES DAY AND NIGHT. IT HAS BECOME A NERVOUS TIC. *TR

HISTORY: DRIVER'S SIDE HEADLIGHT INTERMITTENT AFTER 30,000 MILES. REPEATED COMPLAINTS TO DEALER, FINALLY REPLACED BULB AT 38,000 MILES. HANDLED UNDER WARRANTY. PASSENGER SIDE HEADLIGHT INTERMITTENT AROUND 50,000 MILES. AFTER REPEATED COMPLAINTS TO DEALER, "STARTER BULB" WAS REPLACED AT 54,000 MILES - ALSO HANDLED UNDER WARRANTY. MOVED TO NEW ADDRESS - SO NEW DEALER. RECEIVED LAME TOYOTA LETTER THAT PRETENDS TO ADDRESS THE SITUATION BY LOWERING THE COST OF THE PART, WHILE NOT ADDRESSING THAT THIS PART SHOULD NOT BE FAILING IN THIS WAY OR AS QUICKLY AS IT IS! PRESENT SITUATION: DRIVER'S SIDE HEADLIGHT AGAIN INTERMITTENT - AROUND 80,000 MILES. ASKED DEALER TO INVESTIGATE AT LAST SERVICE (87,000). "NO PROBLEM FOUND" "BRING IT BACK WHEN IT'S TOTALLY OUT" "IF HEADLIGHT IS THE SAME ONE THAT FALLS INTO SPECIAL CATEGORY OF LIGHTS, IT'LL BE $150 PLUS LABOR" "BUT IT COULD BE 1 OF 2 DIFFERENT LIGHTS WHICH WILL BE $300+ OR $600+ - WE WON'T KNOW UNTIL WE PULL IT APART." EVEN THOUGH I PURCHASED EXTENDED WARRANTY COVERAGE, THE HEADLIGHTS ARE EXCLUDED. EVEN THOUGH PREVIOUSLY-REPLACED BULB IS ONLY SLIGHTLY OLDER THAN ORIGINAL PROBLEM. PROBLEM IS THAT TOYOTA IS NOT TAKING REAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE LEVEL OF PROBLEM THAT THIS IS. THEY SHOULD BE COVERING LABOR COSTS, EXTENDING WARRANTIES AND PROVIDING A NEW REPLACEMENT LIGHT THAT ACTUALLY WORKS! I BELIEVE NEW PRIUS USES LEDS. CHARGING LESS MONEY ON AN ALREADY EXORBITANTLY OVERPRICED PART AND REQUIRING CUSTOMERS TO PAY MORE OUT-OF-POCKET FOR A PART THAT DOESN'T WORK PROPERLY TO BEGIN WITH IS OUTRAGEOUS! THE INVESTIGATION MUST BE CONTINUED. TOYOTA IS NOT SERVING THEIR CUSTOMERS AND IT IS UNSAFE AND AT AN UNREASONABLE COST. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE FOR THIS BEHAVIOR. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH ON NORMAL ROAD CONDITIONS. THERE WAS PRESSURE APPLIED TO THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL, FOLLOWED BY AN UNINTENDED INCREASE IN ACCELERATION. THE DRIVER APPLIED PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE PEDAL AND THE VEHICLE FAILED TO SLOW DOWN. THE GEAR SHIFT FAILED TO OPERATE IN THE "NEUTRAL" POSITION. IN ADDITION, THE ENTIRE GEAR INDICATORS ILLUMINATED AT THE SAME TIME. THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN INTO A BARRIER OF DIRT AS A RESULT OF THE VEHICLE COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP. THE FAILURES OCCURRED ON FOUR SEPARATE OCCASIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED FOR THE MALFUNCTIONS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 41,404.
