I BOUGHT MY NEW 2010 PRIUS JUNE 6TH 2009. SINCE ABOUT OCT 2009, I HAVE NOTICED WHEN I AM BRAKING AND GO OVER A POTHOLE IN THE ROAD, THE CAR SEEMS TO SPEED UP. THERE IS A POTHOLE BY MY HOUSE SO I CAN TEST THIS FREQUENTLY. IT HAPPENS WHEN I GO ABOUT 30 MPS (AS I'M SLOWING DOWN DUE TO THE STOP LIGHT ON THE CORNER). I TOOK MY 2010 PRIUS INTO THE DEALERSHIP ON DEC 28TH AND THEY WERE VERY UNHELPFUL AND RUDE. THEY TOLD ME TO REMOVE MY FLOOR MATS EVEN THOUGH WHAT MY ISSUE WAS HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH FLOOR MATS OR THE GAS PEDAL. WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP ENCOURAGE THEM TO FIX THIS ISSUE AS I FIND IT UNSAFE TO DRIVE MY CAR?? I HAVE ALMOST REAR ENDED THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME TWICE. IT'S VERY CONCERNING. *TR
WE HAD PICKED UP OUR BRAND NEW TOYOTA PRIUS 2010 ON SEP 24TH 2009. A WEEK LATER, ON OCT 1, I WAS DRIVING IN TO MY BROTHER IN LAW'S DRIVEWAY (MAYBE AT 5MPH) WHEN I FELT THAT THE BRAKE PEDAL DID NOT ENGAGE. I CRASHED INTO THEIR GARAGE DOOR. SINCE, THIS WAS A METAL DOOR, WE THOUGHT WE COULD DENT IT BACK IN AND REPAINT IT. THEREFORE, IT WAS NOT REPORTED TO INSURANCE. SINCE THEN, I HAVE FELT A COUPLE MORE TIMES THAT THE BRAKE DID NOT ENGAGE EITHER QUICKLY ENOUGH OR HARD ENOUGH. I AM NOT A RASH DRIVER. I HAVE NOT HAD A TRAFFIC VIOLATION IN ABOUT 8 YEARS OR SO. I AM VERY WORRIED OUT THIS. WE HAVE 2 CHILDREN THAT ARE IN THE CAR A LOT WITH ME. PLEASE ADVISE. *TR
2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. I PURCHASED A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS SERIES V IN JULY 2010 ... I HAVE NOTICE THAT WHEN GOING OVER A "POTHOLE" OR VERY ROUGH PAVEMENT THAT THE VEHICLE DOES SOMEWHAT SPEED UP AND HAVE A MOMENTARY LOSS OF BRAKING CAPABILITY. EXPERIENCE SUDDEN LOSS BRAKING POWER WHEN MY PRIUS HIT A POTHOLE WHILE APPLYING THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE CAR REGAIN BRAKING POWER AFTER SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. THIS ISSUE HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES. THE CONTACT TOOK HIS VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THERE WAS NO PROBLEM WITH THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THE CONTACT STATED HE HEARD ABOUT THE PROBLEM ON THE NEWS AND HE WAS REPORTING THE PROBLEM. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 2,010.
I OWN A 2010 PRIUS, PURCHASED 7/22/09. I HAVE EXPERIENCED A SUDDEN SURGE WHEN TRAVELING OVER A BUMP OR LARGE POTHOLE. THE CAR MOMENTARILY SURGES AND FEELS SLIGHTLY OUT OF CONTROL. THIS HAS HAPPENED ABOUT A DOZEN TIMES IN THE 6 MONTHS I HAVE OWNED THE VEHICLE. I AM CONCERNED ABOUT MY SAFETY AND THIS IS WHY I AM WRITING TO YOU. *JB
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 PRIUS. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH ON UNEVEN PAVEMENT THE VEHICLE LUNGED FORWARD AND SHE WAS FORCED TO ENGAGE THE BRAKE PEDAL TWICE TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE OCCURRED 10 TIMES PRIOR TO HAVING IT DIAGNOSED BY THE DEALER. THE DEALER STATED THAT NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 4. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 3,800. 2010 PRIUS BOUGHT IN JULY OF 2009. SIMILAR PROBLEM TO WHAT IS CURRENTLY BEING INVESTIGATED. WHEN COMING TO A STOP (USUALLY FROM HIGHWAY SPEED) ON A ROAD WITH POTHOLES, THE CAR WILL HIT A POTHOLE AND WILL LURCH FORWARD, AS IF I HAD TAKEN MY FOOT OFF OF THE BRAKE. I HAVE A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS PURCHASE IN 9/2009. WHEN I SLOW DOWN TO STOP AND GO OVER A BUMP IT FEELS AS THOUGHT THE POWER BREAKS GO OUT AND THE VEHICLE SURGES FORWARD. I HAVE NOTICED AN ISSUE WITH THE BRAKES NOT WORKING FOR A SECOND WHEN I AM GOING DOWNHILL IN THE PARKING GARAGE, AND GOING OVER A SPEED BUMP, WHEN I GO OVER THE BUMP WHILE THE BRAKES ARE SLIGHTLY PRESSED, IT MOMENTARILY LOSES BRAKING AFTER GOING OVER THE BUMP. PROBLEM VEHICLE: 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS PURCHASED IN SEPTEMBER 2009. WHEN FOOT IS ON OR OFF BRAKE AT SPEEDS < APPROX 45 MPH, AND A LARGE BUMP/POT HOLE/ETC IS TRAVERSED, THE BRAKES FAIL FOR ABOUT A SECOND (WHICH FEELS LIKE AN UNCONTROLLED ACCELERATION). FOR THAT SECOND THE CAR IS UNCONTROLLED. THIS HAS HAPPENED AT LEAST 15 TIMES SINCE SEPTEMBER 2009. THIS IS ESPECIALLY DANGEROUS IS SUDDEN BRAKING IS REQUIRED OR ROAD CONDITIONS ARE HAZARDOUS. *TR
1. LOW DRIVING SPEEDS (<30 MPH), MOVING DOWN HILL, DECELERATING AS APPROACHING A STOP SIGN. 2. WHEN THE FRONT WHEEL STRIKES POT HOLE, THE BRAKING ACTION STOPS/DECREASES, THE CAR MOVES FORWARD MORE QUICKLY. IN THE CURRENT CASE, THERE ARE A SERIES OF THREE POT HOLES, SO HITTING EACH POT HOLE INCREASES THE FORWARD MOTION DESPITE HAVING BREAK PEDAL DEPRESSED. CONSEQUENCE, IS IMMEDIATE DIFFICULTY TO COME TO A STOP AT A STOP SIGN. 3. NO CURRENT CORRECTION HAS BEEN ATTEMPTED. *TR
WE HAVE AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH OUR 2010 PRIUS, PURCHASED IN 9/09. WHEN GOING OVER A DEPRESSION IN THE ROAD, OR A BUMP, WHEN BRAKES ARE PRESSED, WE FEEL LIKE THE CAR IS BUCKING/ACCELERATING. MY PRIUS 2010 3RD GENERATION MODEL'S BRAKES SEEM TO GO OUT WHEN BRAKING OVER UNEVEN ROAD. THIS HAS HAPPENED MORE THAN 10 TIMES STARTING FROM THE FIRST WEEK I GOT THE CAR. TWICE MY 2010 PRIUS HAD A DELAY WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES. MOMENTARILY I THOUGHT I HAD A BRAKING FAILURE. *TR
I HAVE 2010 PRIUS. I AM EXPERIENCING AN ENERGY SURGE FROM MY BACK WHEELS WHEN I STEP ON MY BRAKES WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY GOING OVER A BUMPY SURFACE LIKE RAIL ROAD TRACKS, POT HOLE OR ROUGH GROUND. IT OCCURS SEVERAL TIMES A WEEK. THE RESULT IS THAT MY CAR SUDDENLY SPEEDS FORWARD WHEN I LEAST WANT IT TO - I AM BRAKING. I HAVE IT THRUST ME INTO AN INTERSECTION. I REPORTED IT TO MY SERVICE DEPT IN NOV 09. THEY TOLD ME THEY HAD NEVER HEARD OF THIS PROBLEM BEFORE AND HAD NO OTHER COMPLAINTS. WITH A FRONT WHEEL DRIVE I DIDN'T UNDERSTAND WHY THE POWER SEEMED TO BE COMING FROM THE BACK WHEELS. NOW I AM ASSUMING IT IS SOME KIND OF CONNECTION TO THE ABS SYSTEM. THIS HAPPENS MOST NOTABLY AT LOWER SPEEDS, ROUNDING A CORNER. BUT I THINK IT MAY ALSO BE HAPPENING ON THE HIGHWAY, BUT THE SURGE IS HARDER TO DETECT AT HIGHER SPEED. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE INTEGRATED NAVIGATION SYSTEM WAS PROVIDING INACCURATE READINGS WHEN ENTERING ANY STREET ADDRESS. HE NOTICED THAT THE NAVIGATION SYSTEM WOULD PLACE HIM ABOUT ONE QUARTER OF A MILE OFF FROM HIS DESTINATION. BOTH THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE NAVIGATION SYSTEM AND ADVISED HIM TO TAKE THE VEHICLE THROUGH THE ARBITRATION PROCESS. SHE EXPERIENCED THE BRAKE FAILURE THREE TIMES; DURING THE SECOND FAILURE THE BRAKES DIDN'T RESPOND AND SHE COLLIDED INTO A VEHICLE AND INJURED HER NECK. SHE HAS NOT TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER SINCE THE FAILURE OCCURRED ONLY WHEN SHE HIT A BUMP IN THE ROAD. SHE WILL TAKE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER TO BE DIAGNOSED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 3,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 10,000. MY 2010 PRIUS HAS ISSUES WITH BRAKING UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS. IT SEEMS TO HAPPEN MOSTLY WHEN I AM BRAKING ON BUMPY ROADS OR GOING OVER RAILROAD TRACKS. THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENT INSISTS THEY ONLY KNOW OF RECALLS REGARDING THE STICKING ACCELERATOR PEDALS, NOTHING ABOUT THIS BRAKING ISSUE. YET I READ PLENTY ONLINE ABOUT THIS PROBLEM, SO I KNOW IT ISN'T ONLY HAPPENING TO ME. WHAT CAN YOU DO?? I'VE LISTED ALL THREE TYPES OF BRAKES IN THE EQUIPMENT AREA OF THIS FORM, BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS - SOMETHING ABOUT THE HYBRID BRAKING SYSTEM ALSO CHARGING THE ENGINE? ONCE THE CONTACT DROVE INTO THE POT HOLE THE BRAKES RELEASED AND SHE WAS FORCED TO PUMP THE BRAKES IN ORDER TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WAS A LOUD SCREECHING NOISE AS WELL. THE NEXT DAY I PURPOSELY WENT THROUGH IT TO "TEST" AND IT DID THE SAME THING BUT LUNGE INTO THE OTHER LANE. I WAS SCARED AND CALLED BUTLER TOYOTA. THEY TOLD ME TO CALL NATIONAL TOYOTA TO REPORT. THEY CONTACT BUTLER AND I WENT BACK IN MAY 21, THEY DID NOT REPAIR IT AND "SHRUGGED" THEIR SHOULDERS SAYING IT'S THE ABS. THEY OFFERED TO HAVE A FIELD TECH PERSON COME DRIVE MY CAR. I CALLED NATIONAL AGAIN AND THEY SEEM TO BE "MEDIATING" THIS WITH BUTLER. I FOUND A REPORT FROM CONSUMERAFFAIRS.COM THAT THIS VERY SIMILAR ISSUE WAS OCCURRING BACK IN 2008 AND THEY CALLED IT "TRACTION CONTROL". NO ONE FROM TOYOTA HAS TOLD ME THIS. I WANT IT FIXED OR A DIFFERENT CAR. I HAVE A TEENAGE WITH A PERMIT AND IF HE WAS DRIVING THIS AND IT OCCURRED, HE WOULD PROBABLY RUN INTO SOMEONE BECAUSE IT TAKES YOU BY SURPRISE. I DO FEAR HIM DRIVING IT DUE TO HIS INEXPERIENCE AND I FRANKLY AM CONCERNED AND AM VERY CAUTIOUS AS A RESULT. *TR
OWN A 2010 PRIUS. HAVE EXPERIENCE INTERMITTENT BRAKE ISSUES. THE BRAKES SEEM TO NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY WHEN THEY APPLIED OVER UNEVEN SURFACES. THE CAR FEELS LIKE IT IS "SLIDING" OR "HYDROPLANING" FOR A BRIEF MOMENT, THEN THE BRAKES "CATCH" AGAIN. I WAS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT ON SEPTEMBER 24, 2009 AND NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT THE ISSUE WITH THE BRAKES. *TR

HE HAD NOT TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP BUT CALLED; HE WAS TOLD THAT THEY WERE LOOKING INTO THE PROBLEM. HE HAD NOT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER TO-DATE. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED AT THE TIME OF THE COMPLAINT. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 7,200. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 2,100.

MY NEW 2010 PRIUS ACCELERATED ON IT'S OWN AS I WAS BRAKING AND SLOWLY APPROACHING THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME THAT WAS STOPPED AT A STOP LIGHT QUITE SOME DISTANCE AWAY. MY CAR HAD ALMOST COME TO A COMPLETE STOP WHEN SUDDENLY THE ENGINE REVVED ON IT'S OWN AS MY FOOT WAS STILL ON THE BRAKE. I HAD TO PRESS DOWN SO HARD ON THE BREAK TO KEEP IT FROM SURGING FORWARD THAT THE ABS LIGHT CAME ON AND THEN THE CAR'S REV WENT DOWN ON IT'S OWN AND ALL WAS BACK TO NORMAL AND HADN'T HAPPENED AGAIN SINCE. I BROUGHT THE CAR TO THE DEALER AND THEY KEPT IT FOR TWO DAYS BUT DIDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT. I HAVE TWO SMALL CHILDREN AND BOUGHT THIS CAR FOR A NUMBER OF REASONS, SAFETY BEING ONE OF THE IMPORTANT ONES. I AM NO LONGER FEELING SAFE. THIS WAS NOT THE FLOOR MATS, OR A SUDDEN STOP MISTAKING ONE PEDAL FOR ANOTHER, OR ANY OTHER FORM OF DRIVER ERROR. THIS WAS THE CAR! THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 4,000. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 500.

ON THREE OCCASIONS, WHILE DRIVING ON CLEAN, DRY ROAD SURFACES, MY 2010 PRIUS SUDDENLY AND BRIEFLY ACCELERATED WITHOUT ANY WARNING AFTER I DROVE OVER MINOR BUMPS AND, ONE 1 OCCASION, A MANHOLE COVER, WHILE BRAKING. THE SENSATION WAS THAT OF THE ENGINE SUDDENLY SURGING AND ACCELERATING. I WAS FORTUNATELY ABLE TO APPLY HARDER PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE PEDAL, REGAINED CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND AVOIDED CRASHING INTO THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. I SPOKE WITH A TOYOTA FIELD TECHNICAL SPECIALIST TODAY WHO TOLD ME THAT THE MECHANICS OF THE CAR ARE SUCH THAT IF A WHEEL HITS A BUMP OR MOVES ONTO A SURFACE THAT CAUSES IT TO ROTATE AT A DIFFERENT RATE VERSUS THE OTHER WHEELS, THE CAR THINKS IT IS GOING INTO A SKID, AND THE ABS SYSTEM KICKS IN. ALSO, THE SYSTEM THAT GENERATES ENERGY TO RECHARGE THE BATTERY, WHICH ALSO EFFECTIVELY BRAKES THE CAR, SUDDENLY CEASES TO OPERATE. CONSEQUENTLY, YOU HAVE THE SENSATION OF ACCELERATION WHEN IN FACT, ACCORDING TO THE TOYOTA SPECIALIST, THE CAR STOPPED DECELERATING. NONETHELESS, THIS SUDDEN DECELERATION IS UNEXPECTED, AND IF I WAS NOT FOCUSED AT THOSE EXACT MOMENTS AND FAILED TO IMMEDIATELY APPLY SIGNIFICANT PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE PEDAL, I COULD HAVE EASILY CRASHED INTO AN OBJECT, OR CAR, OR PERSON, IN FRONT OF ME. I DO NOT FEEL SAFE IN THIS CAR, AND AM WORRIED THAT MY WIFE OR SON COULD HAVE A MAJOR PROBLEM RESPONDING TO THIS SUDDEN LACK OF CONTROL. THERE IS GREAT POTENTIAL FOR SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH FROM THIS TYPE OF INCIDENT. MY CAR IS ABOUT 1 MONTH OLD, WITH 1,250 MILES ON IT. I UNDERSTAND FROM THE SPECIALIST THAT TOYOTA DEALERSHIPS ON LONG ISLAND HAVE HAD AT LEAST ONE OTHER SIMILAR COMPLAINT. *TR
ON MY 2010 PRIUS IV WHICH I TOOK DELIVERY OF IN AUGUST, 2009, EVERY TIME I BRAKE, GOING OVER A POTHOLE OR LARGE BUMP, THE CAR LURCHES FORWARD EVEN THOUGH I AM STEPPING ON THE BRAKE. SOMETIMES WHEN BRAKING AND HITTING A BUMP OR POTHOLE, THERE SEEMS TO BE A BRIEF PERIOD WHERE THE CAR FEELS LIKE ITS ACCELERATING OR THE BRAKES ARE NOT SLOWING IT DOWN PROPERLY. KEEPING PRESSURE ON THE BRAKES GETS BY THE PROBLEM BUT IT IS VERY UNSETTLING AND I HAVE NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM WITH BRAKES IN ANY CAR BEFORE. IT HAS HAPPENED A FEW TIMES SINCE WE BOUGHT THE CAR IN JULY 2009 BUT VERY INTERMITTENTLY. THE DATE I AM PICKING IS JUST AN APPROXIMATE DATE FOR ONE OF THE INCIDENTS. I AM REPORTING THIS NOW IN LIGHT OF THE RECENT PUBLICITY ABOUT SIMILAR EVENTS REPORTED BY OTHER OWNERS, WHICH MADE ME REALIZE WHAT I HAD BEEN NOTICING WAS A REAL ISSUE. *JB
