TOYOTA PRIUS 2010, SUDDEN SURGE OF POWER, WHEN SLOWING OR BRAKING TO COME TO A STOP. EXTREMELY DANGEROUS IN TRAFFIC OR WHEN PARKING. HAVE REPORTED TO TOYOTA, WHO CLAIMED NO KNOWLEDGE OF PRIUS'S HAVING THIS DEFAULT. ANOTHER SAID THIS WAS A COMMON FUNCTION OF THE HYBRIDS. RECENT SERVICE DEPT. CLAIMED CHECKED BUT FOUND NO EVIDENCE. THIS PROBLEM HAPPENS INTERMITTENTLY. BECAUSE WE KNOW OF THIS PROBLEM, ARE EXTRA CAUTIOUS. *TR
I HAVE A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. ON A DAILY BASIS I DRIVE OVER TWO SEPARATE SPEED BUMPS ON THE STEEP DOWNHILL-INCLINE ENTRANCE TO MY OFFICE PARKING GARAGE, AT A LOW SPEED (ALWAYS LESS THAN 10 MPH). UPON GOING OVER EACH BUMP, MY BRAKES (WHICH ARE ENGAGED DUE TO THE STEEP DOWNHILL INCLINE) DISENGAGE BRIEFLY AND THEN RE-ENGAGE. SOMETIMES THE BRAKES ALSO MOMENTARILY DISENGAGE WHEN I AM CONTINUING DOWN THE RAMP IN THE PARKING GARAGE, EVEN IN THE ABSENCE OF A SPEED BUMP. THIS SEEMS TO HAPPEN MOST OFTEN WHEN I AM TURNING. EACH TIME THE BRAKES DISENGAGE, THE CAR SLIPS AND I FEEL IT IS NOT UNDER CONTROL. I HAVE TRIED TO AVOID THESE SYMPTOMS BY KEEPING MY SPEED EXTREMELY LOW IN THE PARKING GARAGE (5 MPH), BUT THAT ONLY WORKS SOMETIMES. THE "DATE OF INCIDENT" IS REALLY ON A DAILY BASIS EVERY DAY I DRIVE INTO WORK. THIS SYMPTOM HAS OCCURRED CONSISTENTLY SINCE I PURCHASED THE CAR IN JUNE, 2009 AND CONTINUES TO THIS DAY. THE BRAKE SYSTEM I AM REFERRING TO IS THE BRAKES THAT ARE ACTIVATED WHEN I DEPRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL WHILE DRIVING. *TR
THE BRAKES ON MY 2010 PRIUS HAVE A PROBLEM WHEN GOING SLOWLY OVER UNEVEN, BUMPY ROAD CONDITIONS. THE CAR SEEMS TO LURCH FORWARD DURING THE BRAKING SEQUENCE. IT IS VERY STARTLING. LUCKILY NO ONE HAS BEEN IN FORNT OF ME, CLOSE ENOUGH TO MAKE CONTACT. IT HAS HAPPENED 5 TIMES. I CANNOT PREDICT WHEN IT WILL OCCUR. WHEN I FIRST TOLD THE SERVICE DEPT AT DEALERSHIP, WITHIN 2 WEEKS OF OWNING CAR, THEY SIAD IT'S JUST SOMETHING TO GET USED TO WITH THE BRAKING SENSOR OR SOMETHIONG AND IT ISN'T ACTUALLY ACCELERATING FORWARD. I MENTIONED IT AGAIN LAST WEEK AFTER THE ISSUES WITH THE OTHER CARS ACCELERATORS, AND THE SERVICE DEPT SAID I HAVE TO REPLICATE IT WITH THEM, TO ADDRESS IT. I CALLED THEM AFTER INFO WAS BROADCAST ON THE RADIO, AND THEY SAID THEY HAD NOT HEARD ANYTHING. NOW I HEAR IN THE NEWS THAT THEY KNEW OF THIS PROBLEM AND ALMOST EXACTLY DESCRIBE IT AS I EXPERIENCE IT. I DRIVE OVER THIS TYPE OF ROAD DAILY, AND AM TRYING TO AVOID AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. *CN
DEAR SIR, I WOULD LIKE TO BRING A PROBLEM TO YOUR ATTENTION. I PURCHASED A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS, VIN# [XXX] , IN JUNE 2009. THE PROBLEM IS NOT THE BRAKE PROBLEM BEING DESCRIBED IN THE PREDICTED RECALL. MY PROBLEM IS AS FOLLOWS: WHEN THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN AND THEN PARKED (SHUT DOWN ) AND STARTED AGAIN, THE BRAKES WILL LOCK UP AT THE SLIGHTEST PRESSURE ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. WHEN STARTING OUT OF A PARKING SPOT, EITHER FORWARD OR BACKWARD, THE SLIGHTEST TOUCH OF THE BRAKE PEDAL WILL LOCK THE BRAKES AND STAND THE CAR ON IT'S NOSE. I HAVE FOUND THAT IF THE PROBLEM OCCURS, I CAN EITHER STOP THE VEHICLE ( SHUT OFF WITH THE START BUTTON ) OR HOLD DOWN HARD ON THE PEDAL FOR 10 TO 20 SECONDS, THE BRAKES PERFORM NORMALLY. I RETURNED THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER IN AUGUST 2009 FOR AN OIL CHANGE AND REPORTED THE PROBLEM, BUT THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT DISMISSED THE COMPLAINT AS 'COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE COMPLAINT' EVEN THOUGH I EXPLAINED THAT IT DID NOT OCCUR EVERY TIME. I CAN NOT CONNECT THE PROBLEM WITH ANY PARTICULAR SITUATION. IT CAN OCCUR WITH NORMAL DRIVING OR IN ECO MODE. I FEEL IT IS AN ANNOYANCE MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE, BUT COULD POSE A PROBLEM IN CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES. I WILL GLADLY ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE REGARDING THIS PROBLEM. WHILE BRAKING ON ROADWAY THAT HAS A MANHOLE OR A PATCH IN THE ASPHALT THAT IS NOT EXACTLY LEVEL WITH THE REST OF THE ASPHALT, THE TIRES FEEL LIKE THERE IS NO TRACTION AND THE CAR FEELS LIKE IT IS HYDROPLANING. I HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS WHILE DRIVING ON TWO SPECIFIC ROADS AND NOW I TRY TO AVOID THE AREAS TO PREVENT THE FEELING OF HAVING NO CONTROL OVER THE CAR. IT FEELS LIKE THE CAR LURCHES FORWARD AND HAS NO TRACTION. THIS HAPPENS ON DRY ROADS. IT IS VERY FRIGHTENING WHEN IT HAPPENS. I FIRST NOTICED IT WHEN I FIRST PURCHASED THE CAR IN JULY AND IT HAS CONTINUED TO HAPPEN. *TW

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY BETWEEN 10 TO 20 MPH ON AN UNEVEN ROAD SURFACE; PROCEEDING TO A COMPLETE STOP AND APPLYING PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE PEDAL, WAS FOLLOWED BY A NO POWER RESPONSE. SUDDENLY, THE VEHICLE RESUMED NORMAL OPERATION WITHIN A FEW SECONDS. THE FAILURE CONTINUED TO OCCUR INTERMITTENTLY WHENEVER ENCOUNTERING AN UNEVEN ROAD SURFACE OR POTHOLE. WHILE BRAKING AND ON UNEVEN SUFRACE BRAKES FEEL LIKE THEY HAVE SROPPED WORKING AND THEN LATER CATCH, VEHICLE SEEMS TO ACTUALLY SPEED UP. IT OCCURES AT LEASE 1+ A DAY DEPENDING ON WHERE I AM DRIVING AND OR WEATHER CONDITIOND. SPEED DOSN'T ALWAYS MATTER, AS IF COMING OFF EXPRESSWAY AND BRAKING, SPEEDS CAN BE 55MPH AND IT STILL HAPPENS. LUCKILY I HAVE NOT HIT ANY THING YET.
MY PRIUS STOPS BRAKING AND ALMOST FEELS LIKE IT IS ACCELERATING IF I APPLY THE BRAKE JUST AS I HIT A BUMP OR HOLE IN THE ROAD. THIS FEELS VERY DANGEROUS--IF I WERE NEEDING TO STOP SUDDENLY TO AVOID A POTENTIAL ACCIDENT AND MY BRAKES DID NOT WORK DUE TO A BUMP IN THE ROAD, IT COULD LEAD ME TO CRASH INTO THE OBJECT I'M TRYING TO AVOID. I OWN A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS, 3RD GENERATION. WHEN I AM BRAKING AND HIT A POTHOLE OR A MANHOLE COVER, THE CAR SURGES FORWARD. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP TODAY AND THEY CHECKED THE CAR AND SAID THEY COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT. THEY ALSO SAID THEY HAD NO KNOWLEDGE OF ANY KIND OF BRAKING OR SURGING PROBLEMS WITH THIS VEHICLE. OUR DEALER WAS EASTERN SHORE TOYOTA IN DAPHNE, AL. THIS HAS HAPPENED APPROXIMATELY 6 DIFFERENT TIMES SINCE WE BOUGHT THE CAR IN 2009. IT STARTED TO OCCUR APPROXIMATELY IN JULY 2009, WITH THE MOST RECENT EPISODE IN JANUARY 2010. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 20 MPH ON AN UNEVEN RAISED ROADWAY SURFACE; PROCEEDING TO MAKE A LEFT TURN. PRESSURE WAS APPLIED TO THE BRAKE PEDAL, FOLLOWED BY AN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION. THE VEHICLE RESUMED TO NORMAL OPERATION AFTER APPLYING PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE FAILURE OCCURRED WHENEVER ENCOUNTERING AN UNEVEN ROAD SURFACE. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN INSPECTED FOR THE MALFUNCTION. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 400.
SINCE PURCHASING MY 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS, I HAVE HAD SERIOUS ISSUES AND SAFETY CONCERNS WITH THE BRAKING SYSTEM. WHEN YOU BRAKE AND HIT A BUMP OR POTHOLE OR LARGE DIP, THE BRAKE CUT OUT AND THE CAR IS NOT CONTROLLABLE UNTIL A FEW MOMENTS LATER. I REPORTED THIS TO THE DEALER AND WAS ASSURED IT WAS PERFORMING AS INTENDED AND NORMAL FOR AN ANTI-LOCK SYSTEM. HAVING USED ANTI-LOCK BRAKES FOR NEARLY 20 YEARS, I KNOW THIS TO NOT BE THE CASE AND STATED THIS. I NOW UNDERSTAND THIS PROBLEM IS WIDESPREAD. I UNDERSTAND THAT LATE FRIDAY TOYOTA CORPORATION ADVISED DEALERS THAT CORPORATE WOULD ANNOUNCE A FIX EARLY THIS WEEK. I HONESTLY WOULD HAVE PREFERRED TO HAVE LEARNED THIS FROM COLONIAL, THAN FROM THE NY TIMES. AS I EXPRESSED DURING MY SALES EXPERIENCE AND TROUBLES WITH CASH FOR CLUNKER PROGRAM - I UNDERSTAND THERE ARE CERTAIN THINGS AS A DEALER THAT YOU ARE NOT IN CONTROL OF, BUT I EXPECT AND WOULD APPRECIATE CLEAR AND TIMELY COMMUNICATION. MOREOVER, GIVEN THE SERIOUSNESS OF THIS AS A SAFETY CONCERN, I AM CONCERNED THAT THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT DID NOT AT LEAST OFFERING TO HELP LOOK INTO MY BRAKING ISSUE WHEN I VERBALLY REPORTED IT DURING SERVICE. INSTEAD, I WAS ASSURED IT WAS NORMAL FOR ANTI-LOCK BRAKES AND MY CLEAR STATEMENT THAT IT WAS SOMETHING I HAD NEVER ENCOUNTERED BEFORE, DESPITE OWNING ANTI-LOCK EQUIPPED CARS FOR THE PAST 19 YEARS WAS DISMISSED. I WOULD LIKE TO REITERATE MY REQUEST BELOW REGARDING BRINGING MY VEHICLE IN IMMEDIATELY TO FIX THE ISSUE (AND RELATED DAMAGE) AS SOON AS YOU ABLE TO AND PROVIDING A LOANER AT TOYOTA'S EXPENSE. DURING MODERATE BRAKING WHEN THERE ARE UNEVEN OR POTHOLES IN ROAD THERE IS A HESITATION BETWEEN THE DYNAMIC BRAKING AND THE DISC BRAKES. THERE SEEMS TO BE A DELAY ENOUGH TO SCARE THE DRIVER ESPECIALLY IF IT WAS THE FIRST TIME. *TR

OCCASIONALLY, THE VEHICLE ALSO RESPONDED AS IF IT WERE HYDROPLANING ON NORMAL ROAD CONDITIONS AND WITHIN MOMENTS, THE BRAKES WOULD RESET. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS EQUIPPED WITH AN ABS. THE FAILURE WAS A NORMAL OCCURRENCE FOR THE VEHICLE. THERE WERE NO RECALLS. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 7 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 3500.

I NOTICED MY BREAKS WOULD NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY WHEN I TRIED TO STOP ON UNEVEN PAVEMENT OR WET PAVEMENT. MY HUSBAND LATER DROVE THE CAR AND THOUGHT WE GOT HIT FROM BEHIND WHEN HE TRIED TO BREAK. THE CAR SURGES FORWARD BEFORE IT STOPS. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP IN LATE NOVEMBER-DECEMBER FOR THE PROBLEM THEY TELL ME THE BRAKES FUNCTION PROPERLY. I HAVE SINCE SCHEDULED ANOTHER APPOINTMENT, THEY DID NOT SEEM TO CARE THAT A BRAKE ANNOUNCEMENT HAD BEEN MADE ON MY PRIUS. I EXPLAINED TO THEM THAT IF THEY DID NOT WANT TO FIX OR ADDRESS MY PROBLEM, THAT WHEN I HIT SOMEONE BECAUSE MY CAR DOES NOT STOP AND SURGES FORWARD, I WILL SUE TOYOTA. WHEN BREAKING MY 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS, IF I GO OVER A BUMP OR POT HOLE, IT FEELS LIKE THE BRAKES CUT OUT AND MY CAR JOLTS FORWARDS. IT SEEMS TO HAPPEN ONLY WHEN I GO OVER A BUMP OR SOMETHING THAT WOULD SHAKE THE CAR A BIT. NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE AS OF YET TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. TW*
MY 2010 PRUIS TENDS TO LURCH FORWARD WHEN BRAKING. THIS MAINLY SEEMS TO OCCUR WHEN THE SURFACE CHANGES WHILE BRAKING, LIKE DRIVING OVER A MANHOLE COVER, POTHOLE OR SLIPPERY SURFACE. I HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS EVERY SINCE I BOUGHT THE CAR IN JUNE 2009. I REPORTED IT TO THE DEALER AT MY FIRST CHECK-UP, AND WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS A FUNCTION OF THE UNIQUE BRAKING SYSTEM ON THE PRIUS, AND THAT THEY HADN'T HEARD THE COMPLAINT BEFORE (TOO NEW IN THE MODEL YEAR). NO RECORD WAS MADE OF MY COMPLAINT. I HAVE LIVED WITH IT EVER SINCE, AND IT HAPPENS AT LEAST TWICE A WEEK; JUST HAPPENED AGAIN YESTERDAY. AT ONE INTERSECTION ON MY COMMUTE I HIT THE SAME SURFACE EVERY TIME AND IT LURCHES ALMOST EVERY TIME. IT FEELS ALMOST AS IF I HAVE LIFTED MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE PEDAL AND IT LURCHES FORWARD, ALTHOUGH I CAN'T SAY IF IT FEELS LIKE IT IS ACCELERATING OR IF IT IS JUST THE INERTIA OF THE CAR THAT CAUSES IT TO LURCH FORWARD. IT HAS NOT CAUSED AN ACCIDENT YET, BUT SINCE THE CAR LURCHES A FEW FEET FORWARD, I KNOW THAT I WOULD HIT ANY CAR TOO CLOSE IN FRONT OF ME. I ALSO WORRY THAT IN SNOW OR ICE IT WOULD CAUSE A SKID TO OCCUR OR SEND ME INTO A DIFFERENT LANE. I WAS NOT AT ALL SURPRISED TO HEAR ABOUT THIS ON THE NEWS THIS MORNING, AND REGRET THAT I DID NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS COMPLAINT FORM TO FILE OR I WOULD HAVE BACK IN JULY. WHILE DRIVING MY 2010 PRIUS, I HAVE EXPERIENCED UNINTENDED BRAKE RELEASE ON 6 OCCASIONS SINCE TAKING DELIVERY OF THE CAR IN JUNE 2009. DURING THE SUMMER, ON DRY PAVEMENT, THE 1ST INCIDENT OCCURRED WHILE APPROACHING AN INTERSECTION AND GOING INTO A RIGHT TURN, THE LEFT FRONT WHEEL ROLLS OVER A (FLUSH TO THE PAVEMENT) MANHOLE COVER. THE CAR LOST BRAKING AND JUMPED/SLIPPED FORWARD. FORTUNATELY, THERE WAS NO CAR CLOSE IN FRONT OF ME. THIS OCCURRED 2X AS THIS IS ONE OF MY NORMAL ROUTES TO WORK. ON 2 OTHER OCCASIONS, NEAR MY HOME APPROACHING AN INTERSECTION IN WHICH I NEEDED TO SLOW DOWN, THE CAR JUMPED WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES. THE PAVEMENT WAS IN 2 SECTIONS (SPLIT HORIZONTALLY), ONE PART CONCRETE AND THE ADJOINING SECTION ASPHALT. THE CAR SLIPPED/JUMPED FORWARD WHILE BRAKING. THE 5TH OCCASION OCCURRED APPROACHING AN INTERSECTION AND THE CAR LURCHED FORWARD AS I TRIED TO STOP ALMOST HITTING THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. THIS WAS ON DRY PAVEMENT, DON'T KNOW THE REASON. GOING OVER POTHOLES ON AT LEAST 1 OCCASION,THE SAME REACTION. HAD MENTIONED TO THE DEALERSHIP SEVERAL TIMES, THE FIRST TIME BEING AT A NEW OWNER ORIENTATION MEETING. THEY WERE NOT FAMILIAR WITH THIS ISSUE. WAS ADVISED IF IT KEEPS OCCURRING, TO BRING THE CAR IN FOR AN INSPECTION. I NOW HAVE AN INSPECTION SCHEDULED FOR FRIDAY FEB 5TH AT THE DEALERSHIP. *TR

INFREQUENTLY, BUT REPEATEDLY, WHILE BRAKING AT LOW SPEEDS, THE BRAKES ON MY 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS WILL BRIEFLY CUT OUT. WHEN THIS OCCURS, THE CAR WILL OFTEN SEEM TO SURGE FORWARD FOR THE BRIEFLY PERIOD; IT IS HARD TO TELL IF THIS IS SIMPLY A PERIOD OF DISCONTINUED DECELERATION, OR IN FACT A BRIEF BURST OF ACCELERATION. IN OVER SEVEN MONTHS OF OWNERSHIP, THIS HAS OCCURRED AT LEAST 10 TIMES, BUT CERTAINLY LESS THAN 50. IT TYPICALLY SEEMS TO HAPPEN WHEN TRAVELING ON WET ROADS (I LIVE IN SEATTLE) OR AFTER SUDDEN CHANGE IN THE NATURE OF THE ROAD (I.E. A POT HOLE OR CHANGE OF ROAD SURFACE HEIGHT/TYPE). SO FAR THIS HAS NOT RESULTED IN ANY INJURY OR CRASH, BUT IS CONCERNING. *TR
MOMENTARY BRAKE FAILURE ON 2010 PRIUS, HAS OCCURRED ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS. *TR

PURCHASED 2010 PRIUS V APPORX. MID-JUNE. DRVING IN FIRST WK OF OWNERSHIP, OBSERVED BREAK PROBLEM. VEHCILE HAD APPROX. 50 MILES ON. DRINING 25-30 MPH ON STRAIGHT, SMOOTH, BLACKTOP ROAD ON A SUNNY, NICE DAY. A CAR BACKED OUT OF A 45 DEG PARKING SPOT WITHOUT WARNING, I HAD TO SLAMP ON BREAKS AT THE SAME TIME THE GAS/ELECTRIC MOTORS WERE SWITCHING. THE BREAK PEDAL LOST FEELING THAT IT HAD PRESSURE UNTIL I PUSHED THE BREAK PEDAL ANOTHER 2 INCHES MORE TO FEEL PRESSURE AND THAT THE BREAKS WERE GRABBING. I DID NOT REPORT THIS IN JUNE, DUE TO I THOUGHT I WAS IMAGINING THINGS DUE TO THE EMERGENCY STOP TOOK MY ATTENTION TO SOME DEGREE.
