TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA RAV 4. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED WITHOUT ANY WARNING. THE DRIVER DID NOT SUSTAIN ANY INJURIES. THE VEHICLE WAS LATER TAKEN TO A DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS PENDING A DIAGNOSIS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 155,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.
I HEAR A CLUNK. POP OR KNOCK-TYPE NOISE WHEN TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL LEFT OR RIGHT. ACCORDING TO TOYOTA SERVICE BULLETIN T-SB-0318-08, A NEW INTERMEDIATE SHAFT HAS BEEN DEVELOPED TO ADDRESS THIS CONDITION, THAT IS TO REMOVE AND REPLACE BOTH STEERING AND INTERMEDIATE SHAFTS (NO. 1 AND NO. 2.). THE TSB EXPRESSLY STATES THAT THE REPAIR IS COVERED ONLY UNDER THE 3 YEAR/ 36K MILESTOYOTA COMPREHENSIVE WARRANTY. MANY OWNERS OF THE RAV OF THIS ERA HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM, AND IT OFTEN OCCURS WHEN THE VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY. MANY OWNERS HAVE HAD TO PAY SEVERAL HUNDRED DOLLARS TO HAVE IT FIXED. ALSO, MANY OWNERS HAVE REPORTED THE SOUND GETTING WORSE OVER TIME IF NOT FIXED. ( THIS INFORMATION IS FREQUENTLY STATED IN FORUMS AND BLOGS ABOUT THIS ERA RAV 4). I BELIEVE THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT WILL, AT SOME POINT, RESULT IN NEGATIVE STEERING EFFECTS, IF NOT LOSS OF STEERING. AS SUCH, TOYOTA SHOULD BE FORCED TO INITIATE A RECALL CAMPAIGN TO FIX THIS TSB PROBLEM UNDER EXTENDED WARRANTY. *TR
ON JAN 9, 2013 WHILE BRAKING IN AN ATTEMPT TO STOP FOR A STOP SIGN, THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL STUCK CAUSING THE CAR TO ACCELERATE THROUGH THE STOP SIGN. AS I CONTINUED TO BREAK WHILE TURNING LEFT, THE CAR FINALLY CAME UNDER CONTROL. FORTUNATELY, THERE WERE NO CARS APPROACHING THE INTERSECTION IN EITHER DIRECTION NOR WERE THERE ANY POLICE PRESENT. THE FLOOR MAT WAS PROPERLY HOOKED IN PLACE. THE PEDAL HAD BEEN ADJUSTED ON JULY 7, 2011 BY ANDERSON TOYOTA OF RALEIGH, NC IN ACCORDANCE WITH TOYOTA'S RECALL AT THAT TIME.. THE NEXT DAY, JAN 10, 2013 I LEFT THE CAR WITH ANDERSON FOR REPAIR. (CASE # TAI30110070) ON JAN 17, 2013 I WAS INFORMED THAT KEVIN PILOTTE A TOYOTA TECHNICAL REP CLEARED THE CAR FOR RETURN TO ME. NO REPAIRS WERE MADE TO THE CAR TO MY KNOWLEDGE. I WAS INFORMED BY ANDERSON'S SERVICE MGR THAT THE PEDAL ASSEMBLY COULD HAVE BEEN REPLACED BUT THAT THIS WAS NOT AUTHORIZED BY THE REP. I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT I WOULD BE CONTACTED DIRECTLY AT SOME POINT BY TOYOTA. PRIOR TO THE 2011 RECALL, I EXPERIENCED ONE SIMILAR INCIDENCE WITH THE PEDAL BUT DID NOT REPORT IT BECAUSE I RECEIVED THE RECALL PROCEDURE WHICH I THOUGHT TOOK CARE OF THE PROBLEM. SINCE I HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM TWICE SINCE 2007, OBVIOUSLY IT IS AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM BUT AN EXTREMELY SERIOUS ONE THAT CAN CAUSE INJURY OR LOSS OF LIFE. MY CAR BEGAN TO MAKE A CLUNKING NOISE AT THE STEERING WHEEL EVERY TIME I WOULD TURN IT IN ANY DIRECTION AT ANY SPEED. I WAS WORRIED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF THE CAR SO I CALLED TOYOTA AND SCHEDULED FOR MY CAR TO BE INSPECTED. I WAS TOLD I HAD 3 RECALLS ON MY CAR. AFTER ALL THE REPAIRS WHERE MADE THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THAT THE ONLY CONCERN THEY STILL HAD WAS THE CLUNKING NOISE IN THE STEERING WHEEL. THEY TOLD ME THAT I NEEDED TO REPLACE THE ACCESSORY SHAFT. I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY OUT OF POCKET. I HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO DECLINE THE REPAIR DUE TO THE COST. I DECIDED TO DO RESEARCH OF MY OWN AND HAVE FOUND MANY OTHER TOYOTA RAV 4 OWNERS THAT HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME ISSUE WITH THEIR VEHICLES. ALL HAVE THE SAME COMPLAINTS AND FEEL THE SAME FRUSTRATIONS AS I DO. THIS PROBLEM SHOULD BE LOOKED AT. THIS COULD POSSIBLY BE A DEFECT IN THEIR DESIGN AT THE EXPENSIVE OF THE CAR OWNER. *TR
NOTICE A POPPING SOUND IN THE STEERING COLUMN. FOUND TOYOTA BULLETIN T-SB-0318-08 WHICH SUPERSEDED TSB ST001-08. THE BULLETINS GAVE NEW PARTS AND REPAIR FOR THE STEERING COLUMN. IF TOYOTA KNOWS THERE IS A DESIGN PROBLEM, THE FIX SHOULD BE COVERED BY TOYOTA. THE PARTS PERSON SAYS HE KNEW THE PART NUMBER BY HEART SINCE SO MANY WERE BEING REPLACED. *TR
OIL CONSUMPTION PROBLEM.
CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, VSC LIGHT AND 4WD LIGHT CAME ON AND STAYED ON. TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER AND THEY DIAGNOSED PROBLEM AS DEFECTIVE CHARCOAL CANISTER. WAS TOLD TOYOTA WOULD NOT COVER THE REPAIR OR PART UNDER THEIR EMISSIONS WARRANTY. TOYOTA IS ATTEMPTING TO BLAME THIS PROBLEM ON CONSUMER ERROR WHEN FILLING THE GAS TANK. HOW IS THE CHARCOAL CANISTER NOT PART OF THE EMISSIONS SYSTEM WHEN IT'S PURPOSE IS TO SERVE AS A FILTER OF GAS/EXHAUST FUMES. TOYOTA IS ONCE AGAIN NOT STANDING BY THEIR WARRANTIES OR PRODUCTS. *TR
THERE IS A CLUNKING IN MY STEERING WHEN I TURN THE CAR LEFT OR RIGHT AT ANY SPEED. THE STEERING FEEL AS THEIR IS LOOSENESS CAUSING NON ACCURATE TURNING AND WOBBLESNESS. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA RAV4. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE PARKED, THE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE CLOCK SPRING WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 140,000.
THE DRIVERS SIDE VISOR BEGAN FLOPPING FORWARD AND WILL NOT STAY IN THE UPRIGHT POSITION. SOMETIMES IT JUST DROPS DOWN WITHOUT BEING TOUCHED AND OF COURSE IT INTERFERES WITH VISIBILITY. I HAVE READ THAT THERE IS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THIS ISSUE. IT WAS MENTIONED AT ONE OF MY SERVICE VISITS AT THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP BUT I DO NOT FEEL THAT I SHOULD HAVE TO PAY $150.00 DOLLARS TO FIX IT. SINCE READING MORE COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS ISSUE IT SEEMS IT IS A DESIGN FLAW. IT WILL DROP DOWN WHEN I HIT THE BRAKES OR SOMETIMES BY ITSELF.
WE WERE ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY GOING HOME FROM ONE PART OF THE STATE TO ANOTHER WHEN WE THOUGHT WE HAD A FLAT TIRE. SUDDENLY WE LOST CONTROL OF THE CAR GOING FROM THE SLOW LANE, CROSSING THE PASSING LANE AND ENDING IN THE SNOWY MEDIAN. THE REAR LOWER SUSPENSION ARM NO. 1 TOTALLY FAILED. OUR HOME TOYOTA DEALER WAS SUPPOSE TO INSPECT IT ON DEC. 5 WHEN WE HAD OUR CAR IN FOR AN EARLIER RECALL. THEY HAD MENTIONED THAT WE WERE GOING TO GET A NOTICE IN THE MAIL AND IT WOULD BE TAKEN CARE OF THAT DAY. THAT DID NOT HAPPEN SINCE THE REPAIRING TOYOTA DEALER CHARGED BACK THE COSTS PLUS THE TOWING COSTS TO OUR HOME TOYOTA DEALER. WE JUST GOT OUR RECALL NOTICE TODAY. *TR UPDATED 02/26/13*L'S
THE VISOR ON THE DRIVER SIDE CONTINUALLY DROPS INTO THE VISION OF THE DRIVER. *TR
MY VEHICLE RECENTLY HAD A RECALL FOR POTENTIAL RUST ISSUES WITH THE REAR LOWER SUSPENSION ARM. BOTH MY SWAY BAR ARMS ARE NOW BROKEN DUE TO RUST AND TOYOTA IS CHARGING ME $500 TO FIX THE ISSUE. THE SERVICE REP AT THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME "THIS IS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE BUT THE SWAY BARS PREVENT THE CAR FROM ROLLING OVER." THIS SOUNDS LIKE A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE TO ME AND ALSO DIRECTLY RELATED TO THE RECALL ISSUE. THIS IS THE 6TH RECALL ON MY VEHICLE AND I HAVE SUBMITTED A REQUEST TO TOYOTA TO FIX THIS ISSUE AT NO COST. CONSIDERING TOYOTA DID NOT HAVE A SOLUTION TO THE REAR SUSPENSION RECALL AND FORCED IT'S OWNERS TO DRIVE WITH THE PROBLEM FOR MULTIPLE MONTHS EXPOSING US TO POTENTIAL DANGER, ASKING THEM TO FIX THIS PROBLEM AT NO COST IS REASONABLE. MY DEALERSHIP EVEN WENT AS FAR AS TO TELL ME THAT IF I WANTED THEM TO INSPECT THE RECALL SITUATION PRIOR TO A FIX BEING AVAILABLE I WOULD HAVE TO PAY LABOR COSTS. LAST TIME I CHECKED, THE CUSTOMER SHOULD NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYING LABOR COSTS DUE TO A RECALL. I WOULD APPRECIATE THAT THE SWAY BAR ARMS ON MY RAV4 ARE FIXED AT NO COST. IF RUST CAUSING "THREADS MAY WEAR, CAUSING THE ARM TO SEPARATE, WHICH COULD RESULT IN THE LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH" THAT RESULTED IN MY RECALL THAN IT SEEMS LIKE THE TWO PROBLEMS ARE RELATED AS THE PARTS ARE IN SIMILAR AREAS OF THE UNDERCARRIAGE. BOTH STRUTS GAVE OUT WHILE TOYOTA RAV4 PARKED AT FRED HAAS TOYOTA COUNTRY DEALERSHIP IN HOUSTON. SERVICE DIRECTOR INDICATES THIS IS KNOWN TOYOTA PROBLEM. EXECUTIVE OFFICES OF TOYOTA USA CONFIRMS BOTH STRUTS CAN GIVE OUT AT SAME TIME FOR OLDER VEHICLES. THEY SAY THIS IS NOT A TOYOTA ISSUE BECAUSE IS OUTSIDE WARRANTY PERIOD. PEOPLE COULD BE SERIOUSLY INJURED OR KILLED IF BOTH GIVE OUT AT SAME TIME AND VEHICLE IS MOVING; NO MATTER THE AGE.
VEHICLE PARKED STARTED TURNED STEERING WHEEL EXIT FROM GARAGE LOUD NOISE AT FULL LOCK LEFT AND RIGHT. CONTACTED DEALER . INFORMED PROBLEM IN MIDDLE SECTION STEERING SHAFT INHERENT TO V6 REPAIR COST 325 DEALER SAID INABILITY STEER NOT A SAFETY ISSUE. *TR
CONSOLE AIRBAG SENSOR WARNING LIGHT CAME ON WHILE DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY AND STAYS ON. COINCIDENTLY THIS AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT ISSUE CAME ABOUT AFTER HAVING TAKEN CAR INTO A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AROUND SEPT 2012 FOR A RECALL. THE RECALL HAD SOMETHING DO WITH FAULTY ROLL-OVER SENSOR FOR THE SIDE CURTAIN AIRBAG SYSTEMS. TOOK THE CAR TO A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. AFTER DTC CHECK, THE CAUSE TURNED OUT TO BE A SHORTED SPIRAL CABLE ASSEMBLY UNIT FOR THE SRS DRIVER AIRBAG. REPLACEMENT JOB REQUIRED TWO HOURS OF LABOR BY TECH, COSTING $210, $307 PART AND "SUPPLIES AND WASTE DISPOSAL" FEE OF $25.88. ACCORDING TO INTERNET SEARCH, IT IS SEEMS THERE HAVE BEEN CASES OF DEFECTIVE SPIRAL CABLE UNIT FOR TOYOTA RAV 4 CAUSING SRS AIRBAG SYSTEM TO GO INTO "INACTIVE" MODE THEREFORE LEAVING DRIVERS/PASSENGERS WITHOUT ANY PROTECTION AND THEREBY CREATING LIFE THREATENING SCENARIO. THEREFORE, THERE IS CLEAR AND STRONG NEED FOR THE NHTSA TO CONTACT TOYOTA CORPORATION TO INITIATE A RECALL ACTION TARGETING THE SPIRAL CABLE ASSEMBLY UNIT (84306-22010). IN RECENT PAST, "TOYOTA IS RECALLING 495,000 CERTAIN 2005 TO EARLY 2009 MODEL YEAR TOYOTA TACOMA VEHICLES SOLD IN THE U.S. NO OTHER VEHICLES ARE INVOLVED IN THIS RECALL". *TR
AIRBAG LIGHT TURNED ON AFTER A RECENT RECALL THAT DONE BY TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. THIS IS CRITICAL SAFETY ISSUE ON THE RAV4, WHICH TOYOTA IS NOT WILLING FIX AS PART OF A RECALL. *TR
2007 TOYOTA RAV 4. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO PROBLEMS WITH TIRE PRESSURE . *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED THE TIRES WOULD LOOSE AIR PRESSURE EVERY TWO TO THREE WEEKS, AND THE TIRE PRESSURE LIGHT WOULD ILLUMINATE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP, WHERE THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED THE TIRE PRESSURE SENSOR ON ALL FOUR WHEELS HAD DETERIORATED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONSUMER IT WAS A FREQUENT OCCURRENCE, BECAUSE THERE WERE SO MANY IN NEW ENGLAND AND DUE TO THE BAD WEATHER. THE DEALER STATED IT WOULD COST $250 PER TIRE TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. UPDATED 01/15/13
THIS MODEL TOYOTA HAS A RECORD OF STUCK OIL RINGS CAUSING EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION WHICH LEADS TO FAILURE OF ENGINE AND CATALYTIC CONVERTER. SEE NEW YORK TIMES OCT 14,2011 AND THE HUNDREDS OF ON LINE COMPLAINTS ABOUT USING ONE QUART OF OIL EVERY 1 K MILES. IN NOVEMBER OF LAST YEAR MY TECHNICIAN DID A COMPLETE CHECK WITH OIL CHANGE, IN JAN THIS YEAR THE OIL WAS DOWN ONE QUART AND IN FEB. I DID ANOTHER OIL CHANGE WITH ONLY TWO QUARTS OF OIL LEFT IN THE PAN WHEN IT TAKES 4-1/2 QUARTS. I TOOK MY RAV 4 TO THE DEALER(4-23-2013) I BOUGHT IT FROM AND WITHOUT LOOKING AT IT I WAS TOLD THE OIL RINGS GET STUCK AND I NEED AN ENGINE REPAIR FOR $3,000 PLUS TAX. I HAD THEM CHECK IT OUT AND I GOT A WRITTEN DOCUMENT WITH THE REPAIR THAT IS NEEDED DOCUMENTED. THIS "NEEDS" TO BE A RECALL ITEM. IF A CAR DOING 70MPH HAS AN ENGINE FAILURE DUE TO LOSS OF OIL THEN THE PERSON WILL LOOSE STEERING AND BRAKE CONTROL LEADING TO A SERIOUS ACCIDENT AND MOST LIKELY DEATH. TOYOTA DID TWO RECALLS ON MY CAR IN APRIL, DOOR SWITCH NEEDED A DROP OF OIL AND REAR SUSPENSION NEEDED TO BE RE-TORQUED. MADE A BIG DEAL OUT OF WHAT COST PENNIES TO FIX. NOW A $3,000 ENGINE REPAIR AND WE NEED TO GO TO SMALL CLAIMS COURT OR CLASS ACTION SUIT OR PLEAD TO YOU TO HELP US GET THIS A RECALL ITEM. *TR
NOISE IN STEERING COLUMN - TOYOTA SERVICE INSPECTED SAME - SUGGESTED STEERING SHAFT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED MILEAGE ON CAR 59200. *TR
2007 TOYOTA RAV 4. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO PROBLEMS WITH RECALL NOTICES FOR REAR SUSPENSION AND POWER WINDOW SWITCH. *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED DID NOT BELIEVE THE RECALL WAS PERFORMED, AS HE IS STILL EXPERIENCING PROBLEMS WITH THE POWER WINDOW SWITCH. ALSO, THE WATER PUMP WAS REPLACED. THE CONSUMER STATED THERE WERE STILL PROBLEMS WITH THE SUSPENSION, AFTER THE DEALER IT WAS FIXED. DUE TO THE ONGOING SUSPENSION PROBLEMS, IT WAS AFFECTING THE STEERING SHAFT, RACK AND PINION AND TIE ROD. UPDATED 03/12/13
WITH NO WARNING, THE THREE LIGHTS CAME ON: 4WD, VSC, ENGINE. NOW THE DEALER TELLS ME THAT COIL #5 FAILED AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED FOR A STAGGERING $350 PARTS AND LABOR. AMAZING, BECAUSE THE PART COSTS ONLY $40, WHAT IS THERE WORTH LABOR FOR $310? I RESEARCHED THIS ISSUE AND IT TURNS OUT THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON ISSUE WITH THESE TOYOTA RAV4 CARS. I FIXED IT AND TWO WEEKS LATER, COIL #4 FAILED, THIS ONE FOR ANOTHER $350! WHAT IS GOING ON WITH THIS CAR. IT IS A BIG PROBLEM WITH COILS FAILING.
I STARTED EXPERIENCING A CLUNKING NOISE WHENEVER I TURN THE STEERING WHEEL TO THE LEFT OR TO THE RIGHT AT LOW SPEEDS. IT HAS PROGRESSIVELY GOTTEN WORSE. RIGHT NOW, IT'S REALLY BAD. I TOOK IT IN TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AT 62K MILES AND THEY SAID I NEED TO REPLACE THE INTERMEDIATE SHAFT AT A COST OF $6,400 OUT OF OWNER'S POCKET. THEY SAID IT HAD BEEN OUT OF WARRANTY FOR A FEW MONTHS BEFORE I TOOK IT IN HENCE, COST TO OWNER. I REPORTED IT TO TOYOTA HEAD QUARTERS AND THEY OFFERED TO REIMBURSE $1K AFTER I SEND THEM RECEIPT OF REPAIRS, SINCE THEY SAID MY WARRANTY EXPIRED NOT LONG BEFORE. I THOUGHT IT WAS A KIND GESTURE BUT I DIDN'T HAVE $5,400 TO SPEND ON THOSE REPAIRS, SO I DIDN'T TAKE THEM UP ON THAT OFFER. I ASKED ABOUT THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF THIS BEING A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE STATED MODEL, AND THEY SAID I MAY HAVE SEEN THIS REPORTED FREQUENTLY IN FORUMS ONLINE, BUT UNTIL ENOUGH PEOPLE REPORT THE PROBLEM TO TOYOTA'S HEAD QUARTERS THEY WON'T HAVE GROUNDS TO ISSUE A RECALL. THE PROBLEM PERSISTS AND CONTINUES TO GET LOUDER AN IS NOW ACCOMPANIED BY VIBRATIONS IN THE STEERING WHEEL. I HOPE TOYOTA SEES THE NEED TO ISSUE A RECALL SOON. *TR
ALTERNATOR FAILS AT 45000
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA RAV4. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 35MPH THERE WAS A CLUNKING NOISE COMING FROM THE LEFT REAR OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE BECAME UNCONTROLLABLE AND SUDDENLY SPUN OUT AT A 180 DEGREE AND CRASHED INTO THE CURB. NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED. THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY AND THERE WAS NO WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATING. THE CONTACT STATED HE INSPECTS THE VEHICLE AND THERE WAS DAMAGES TO BOTH RIMS AND REAR TIRES, AND THE LOWER LEFT CONTROL ARM BROKE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER BUT THE INSURANCE COMPANY INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND STATED IT WAS THE LOWER CONTROL ARM AND BOTH REAR RIMS AND WHEELS OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT STATED HE RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT FOR RECALL NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 12V373000 (SUSPENSION: REAR). DEALER INFORMED ME YESTERDAY THAT INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED FOR THE THIRD TIME SINCE MANUFACTURE.SHAFT WAS REPLACED A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO AT A COST OF $880, OF WHICH I HAD TO PAY $500 AS VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. DEALER DOWNPLAYED WHETHER THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE BUT INSISTED THAT I SHOULD PAY $715 TO REPLACE THE SHAFT WHICH IS MAKING KNOCKING NOISES WHEN DRIVEN. AROUND THE 12TH OF OCTOBER 2012 I STARTED TO NOTICE A SOUND WHEN TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL TO THE LEFT. WITHIN A FEW DAYS I COULD HEAR IT WHEN TURNING LEFT OR RIGHT AT SLOWER SPEEDS. I TOOK MY CAR TO MY MECHANIC FOR AN OIL CHANGE AND MENTIONED IT. HE SAID THAT IT SEEMED TO BE THE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT. I CONTACTED A TOYOTA DEALER TO ENQUIRE ABOUT COST OF PART AND REPAIR. I WAS TOLD THAT THE PART WAS AROUND $400 AND THAT IT WOULD TAKE APPROXIMATELY 1.6 HOURS TO REPAIR AT $80/HOUR. I CONTACTED TOYOTA HEADQUARTERS AND WAS TOLD THAT EVEN THOUGH THERE WAS A SERVICE BULLETIN OUT ON THIS SAME PROBLEM, THAT THERE WAS NOT A RECALL AND THE CAR IS NOT UNDER WARRANTY NOW. IF I HAD NOT ASKED MY MECHANIC TO CHECK THE PROBLEM I VERY LIKELY WOULD OF HAD AN ACCIDENT WHEN THE SPLINES FINALLY GAVE OUT. I HAVE THE OLD SHAFT NOW AS I HAD MY MECHANIC ORDER THE PART FROM A TOYOTA DEALER (THE PRICE WAS JUST OVER $100) AND IT TOOK HIM 1.7 HOURS TO DO THE REPAIR, SO IT COST ME ABOUT $200 TOTAL. TOYOTA SAID THAT IF THERE WERE A RECALL I MIGHT BE ABLE TO GET SOME OF MY MONEY BACK. DOES SOMEONE HAVE TO DIE BEFORE THEY HAVE A RECALL ON THIS. MY MECHANIC JUST FOUND OUT THAT IN 2011, TOYOTA PUT OUT A SERVICE BULLETIN ABOUT EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION ON THIS CAR MAKE AND MODEL YEAR, AND OTHER TOYOTAS DUE TO A FAULTY PISTON ASSEMBLY. THEY ONLY COVER THIS REPAIR UP UNTIL 60,000 MILES. THIS IS AN ENGINE DEFECT AND MILEAGE SHOULD HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. COST TO REPAIR IS $5,500 ACCORDING TO MY TOYOTA DEALER. AT ANY SPEED, AN AUDIBLE "CLUNK" IS PRESENT WHEN STEERING WHEEL IS TURNED RIGHT OR LEFT. FURTHERMORE, ONE CAN FEEL A VIBRATION IN THE STEERING WHEEL THAT EXACTLY MATCHES THE "CLUNK" SOUND. DURING LOW SPEEDS AFTER STARTING THE VEHICLE THE NOISE AND VIBRATION IS PROMINENT ANY TIME THE STEERING WHEEL IS TURNED. AT HIGHER SPEEDS, THE SOUND IS LESS PRONOUNCED, BUT A VIBRATION AND FEELING OF "LOOSENESS" IN THE STEERING IS PROMINENT. SINCE THIS VEHICLE IS USED AS A FAMILY CAR WITH YOUNG CHILDREN (AND A PREGNANT WOMAN) PRESENT, THIS NOISE/VIBRATION COMBINATION IS DISTURBING AS WE FEAR STEERING FAILURE. I WAS WAITING AT A STOP WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE, AND THE TRANSMISSION IN DRIVE. SUDDENLY, WITH NO INPUT FROM ME, THE ENGINE ACCELERATED. ADDING MORE PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE I WAS UNABLE TO KEEP IT FROM MOVING FORWARD. WITH FULL PRESSURE ON THE BRAKE, THE VEHICLE SLOWLY MOVED INTO THE REAR PANEL OF A CAR IN FRONT OF ME, DOING FENDER DAMAGE TO BOTH VEHICLES. MY WIFE LEFT HOME TO DRIVE TO THE STORE - A 3-MILE TRIP, ALL IN-TOWN DRIVING. AFTER TRAVELING ABOUT 1/2 MILE, SMOKE STARTED COMING INTO THE CAR FROM BEHIND THE PANEL ON THE INSIDE OF THE DRIVER'S DOOR. SHE STOPPED THE CAR. THE VOLUME OF SMOKE ACCUMULATING IN THE CAR INCREASED. A PASSER-BY STOPPED, CALLED 911, REPORTED THE FIRE, AND ASSISTED MY WIFE, WHO CLIMBED INTO THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT AND EXITED THE CAR OUT THE FRONT, RIGHT PASSENGER DOOR. BY THE TIME THE FIREMEN AND POLICE ARRIVED, APPROXIMATELY 3-5 MINUTES LATER, SMOKE WAS DENSE AND FLAMES WERE SURROUNDING THE EDGES OF THE DOOR PANEL. FIREMEN SPRAYED WATER ON THE PANEL, PULLED THE PANEL OFF THE DOOR, AND CONTINUED TO APPLY WATER UNTIL THE FIRE WAS EXTINGUISHED. THANKFULLY, MY WIFE WAS ABLE TO STOP AND EXIT THE CAR QUICKLY. HAD SHE BEEN IN HEAVY, FAST-MOVING TRAFFIC, IT COULD HAVE BEEN A LIFE-THREATENING SITUATION. I WAS DRIVING DOWN FOREST AVE IN BROCKTON, MA, THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR STATED SMOKING, I QUICKLY TURNED THE ENGINE OFF, GOT ME AND MY SON OUT OF THE CAR AND CALLED THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WHO DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY AND SUGGESTED THAT I GOT IT TOWED TO A REPAIR SHOP. SO I DID, TO COPLAND TOYOYTA WHERE IT WAS TROUBLESHOOT TO A MASTER SWITCH ASS. IT WAS REPAIRED AND I HAD TO PAY $580.70 BECAUSE THEY SAID ITS NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY. *TR

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WAS A BURNING SMELL THROUGHOUT THE VEHICLE WHENEVER CONTACT USED THE POWER SWITCH FOR THE WINDOWS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO DEALER WHO INSPECTED VEHICLE AND DETERMINED THAT THE MOTOR FOR THE POWER SWITCH PASSENGER WINDOW NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MOTOR WAS NOT REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 42,000.

THERE IS A KNOCKING NOISE COMING FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. I CAN ALSO FEEL SOMETHING MOVING IN SYNC WITH THE KNOCKING WHENEVER IT OCCURS. IT FEELS AS THOUGH SOME CAR PARTS ARE MAKING CONTACT AND THE KNOCKING NOISE IS THE RESULT OF THE IMPACT. *TR
