MY 2007 TOYOTA RAV 4 IS EXPERIENCING EXCESSIVE OIL USAGE WHICH TOYOTA KNOWS IS A PROBLEM WITH VEHICLES THAT HAS A 2AZ ENGINE. IT IS BELIEVED THAT IF THE ENGINE SIEZES DUE TO THIS EXCESSIVE OIL USAGE FOR A VEHICLE THAT IS IN MOTION, THE BRAKES AND STEERING FAILURE COULD CAUSE LOSS OF CONTROL AND RESULT IN A CRASH. AS SUCH, I BELIEVE TOYOTA SHOULD BE FORCED TO ISSUE A SAFETY RECALL TO CORRECT THIS ISSUE IMMEDIATELY.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA RAV4. WHILE DRIVING 40 MPH, THE OIL WARNING INDICATOR FAILED TO ILLUMINATE WITHIN A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME WHEN THE ENGINE OIL LEVEL WAS LOW. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER, BUT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 46,925.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA RAV4. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH, THE ENGINE BURNED OIL EXCESSIVELY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER AND A CONSUMPTION TEST WAS PERFORMED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED, BUT THE MECHANIC PLACED LESS OIL IN THE VEHICLE AND ADVISED THE CONTACT TO COME BACK AFTER THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN DRIVEN 500 MILES. THE FAILURE OCCURRED MULTIPLE TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 126,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA RAV4. THE CONTACT RECEIVED RECALL NOTIFICATIONS FOR NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V168000 (AIR BAGS) AND NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 13V383000 (SUSPENSION). THE PARTS NEEDED TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE WERE UNAVAILABLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE.
I HAVE BEEN HAVING REGULAR OIL CHANGES AT MY LOCAL AAA SHOP AS SCHEDULED FOR MY 2007 TOYOTA RAV4. WHEN MY MAINTENANCE LIGHT CAME ON I TOOK IT IN TO AAA WITHIN THE NEXT FEW DAYS. I WAS TOLD IT HAD ONLY BEEN 3000 MILES SINCE MY LAST OIL CHANGE, BUT THAT THERE WAS ONLY 1 QT. OF OIL LEFT IN THE CAR. THERE WERE NO LEAKS DETECTED AND THEY SAID THE CAR WAS NOT SMOKING TO INDICATE IT WAS BURNING OIL. TWO MOS. LATER I TOOK THE CAR TO MY TOYOTA DEALERSHIP FOR AN INSPECTION STICKER. I TOLD THEM THE CAR WAS RUNNING ROUGH AND TO CHECK IT OUT. THEY REPLACED SPARK PLUGS AND VALVE COVER GASKET. SHORTLY THEREAFTER I RECEIVED NOTICE FROM TOYOTA ABOUT EXCESSIVE OIL USE FOR MY MODEL. I TOOK IT IN FOR THE EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION TEST. DURING THE 1000 MI TEST IT BURNED ANOTHER QUART AND A HALF OF OIL. THEY DISREGARDED MY COMPLAINT ABOUT BURNING ALL BUT 1 QT. WITHIN 3000 MI. AND SAID THE CONSUMPTION WAS NORMAL. CAR CONTINUES TO RUN ROUGH.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA RAV4. WHILE STOPPED, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED WITHOUT WARNING AND CRASHED INTO A FENCE. THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. THE DRIVER SUSTAINED NECK INJURIES THAT REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE ISSUE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 88,000.
WAS EXPERIENCING AND INTERMITTENT CHECK OIL LIGHT SO I CALLED TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT. THE DAY BEFORE THE SERVICE APPOINTMENT AND DRIVING ON THE GARDEN STATE PARKWAY, MY ENGINE SLOWED WAY DOWN AND LOST ALMOST ALL POWER. THE ENGINE STARTED MAKING A VERY LOUD NOISE AND WOULD ONLY GO ABOUT 30 MPH. THE NEXT DAY THE AUTO REPAIR SHOP CALLS AND INFORMS ME THAT I NEED A NEW ENGINE. I WENT WITH A JASPER REBUILT ENGINE WHICH STILL COST ME $6,100 INSTALLED. *TR
WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY DURING MY RECENT VACATION I HEARD A LOUD BANG FROM UNDER THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. IMMEDIATELY AFTER WHILE STILL DRIVING, PIECES OF METAL FELL OFF THE BOTTOM OF MY CAR HITTING THE VEHICLE BEHIND ME. WE BOTH PULLED OVER, MY REAR STABILIZER / SWAY BAR HAD BUSTED AND FALLEN FROM THE CAR. NOW I HAVE TO PAY SEVERAL HUNDRED DOLLARS FOR REPAIRS, MY WIFE AND I COULD OF BEEN SEVERELY HURT OR WORSE, AND NOW POSSIBLY PAY FOR A CRACKED WINDSHIELD FROM THE CAR BEHIND ME. I HAVE READ SEVERAL OTHER COMPLAINTS FROM TOYOTA OWNERS THAT EXPERIENCED THIS SAME PROBLEM. THIS SHOULD OF NOT HAPPENED AT ONLY 54000 MILES. THIS IS A DANGEROUS SITUATION. 2007 TOYOTA RAV4 SUN VISORS WILL NOT STAY UP, WHICH RESTRICTS VISIBILITY. AT FIRST, THE PASSENGER VISOR STARTED TO HAND DOWN, ABOUT AN INCH FROM THE ROOF. EVENTUALLY, BOTH THE PASSENGER AND DRIVER SIDE VISORS REMAIN IN THE DOWN POSITION. THE VISOR COMPLETELY RESTRICTS VISIBILITY AND APPARENTLY, HAS BEEN A SAFETY ISSUE WITH TOYOTA FOR YEARS. 15 SEP 2014, I TOOK MY RAV4 IN FOR RECALL WORK AND ASKED THEM TO FIX THE VISORS. I WAS TOLD THE NEXT DAY, THAT IT WOULD COST 240 DOLLARS TO REPLACE BOTH VISORS. I TALKED WITH THE SERVICE MANAGER AT THE DEALERSHIP, AND BASICALLY STATED, THAT TOYOTA WAS RESPONSIBLE AND THEY WOULD HAVE TO APPROVE THE REPLACEMENT. CALLED TOYOTA 800-331-4331 AND TALKED WITH CUSTOMER CONCERNS. SHE TOLD ME THAT THIS IS A WARRANTY ISSUE AND THAT MY 36K MILE WARRANTY HAS ALREADY PASSED. I TOLD HER THAT THIS WAS A SAFETY AND DESIGN FLAW THAT PRESENTS A HAZARD TO ANYONE WHO DRIVES THE VEHICLE. CUSTOMER CONCERNS STATED THAT SINCE THERE WERE NO RECALLS ON THIS MATTER, THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THAT TOYOTA WOULD DO. SINCE BEING TOLD THAT TOYOTA DOES NOT CONSIDER THIS A SAFETY ISSUE, I HAVE RESEARCHED SEVERAL CONSUMER BLOGS, TOYOTA OWNERS, AND HAVE SEEN SEVERAL BLOGS/COMPLAINTS CONCERNING TOYOTA CAMRY'S, RAV4'S, HIGHLANDER'S AND TUNDRA'S, ALL HAVING THE SAME SUN VISOR SAFETY ISSUES. MANY HAVE REPLACED THEIR VISOR'S TWO AND THREE TIMES. MOST BLOGS DISCUSS REMEDIES TO FIX, ONLY FINDING THE MATTER A PAIN AND SAFETY ISSUE NO ONE WANTS TO REMEDY. OWNERS OF THESE VEHICLES SHOULD BE ABLE TO ADJUST THE VISORS SO THAT THEY CAN BE SAFELY ADJUSTED TO SAFELY STAY UP AND OUT OF THE WAY WHEN NOT IN USE. I DON?T THINK WE SHOULD WAIT FOR NUMEROUS ACCIDENTS OR INJURIES AND DEATH TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE SAFETY DESIGN FLAW AND SERIOUS SAFETY COMPLICATIONS! *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA RAV4. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN THE BRAKES WERE ACTIVATED, THERE WAS AN ABNORMAL NOISE COMING FROM THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT DIAGNOSED THAT THE STEERING RACK INTERMEDIATE SHAFT AND THE WATER PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA RAV4. WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, THE BATTERY WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED, THE STEERING WHEEL SEIZED, AND THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 70,000.
I WAS TOLD THAT MY RAV4 WAS VERY LOW ON OIL AND THAT I SHOULD HAVE IT LOOKED AT. THOUGH I USUALLY HAVE MY OIL CHANGED AT THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP, THEY NEVER MENTIONED ANYTHING TO ME ABOUT LOW LEVELS OF OIL IN MY CAR. I LEARNED ABOUT THE LOW LEVEL OF OIL WHEN I TOOK MY CAR TO A CHAIN TO HAVE THE OIL CHANGED. HOWEVER, THE PEOPLE AT TOYOTA HAVE BEEN AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM SINCE 2011. I MENTIONED THE ISSUE TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND THEY HAVE ME RETURN ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS FOR OIL CONSUMPTION TESTS. NOW MY CAR HAS EXCEEDED THE MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY AND TOYOTA HAS INFORMED ME THAT MY EXTENDED WARRANTY MAY NOT COVER THE COST OF REPAIRS EVEN THOUGH THE CAR WAS UNDER MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY BEFORE THE PROBLEM WAS POINTED OUT TO ME. I WAS ALSO INFORMED TODAY THAT IT COULD COST ME $1100-$1200 JUST TO HAVE TO ENGINE TAKEN APART. THE COST OF REPAIRING THE VEHICLE WILL INCREASE IF THEY TAKE IT APART AND THE PROBLEM ISN'T COVERED BY MY EXTENDED WARRANTY. *TR
I HAVE BEEN BRINGING MY CAR TO A LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP FOR MAINTENANCE AND REPAIRS FOR MORE THAN A YEAR. DURING THIS PERIOD MY CAR WAS COVERED UNDER MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY. I'VE HAD MY BRAKES REPAIRED, SEVERAL RECALLS TENDED TO, AND MANY OIL CHANGES PERFORMED. THERE WAS ONE OCCASION WHEN I BROUGHT MY CAR TO A CHAIN AUTO SERVICE STORE TO HAVE AN OIL CHANGE PERFORMED. IT WAS AT THIS CHAIN THAT I WAS INFORMED THAT THE OIL LEVEL IN MY CAR WAS DANGEROUSLY LOW. I CALLED THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP THAT I USUALLY BRING MY CAR TO FOR MAINTENANCE AND REPAIRS AND WAS TOLD THAT THEY NEEDED TO PERFORM AN OIL CONSUMPTION TEST ON MY CAR. I BROUGHT MY CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS SO THAT THEY COULD PERFORM THE TEST. ON THE FINAL TEST DAY I WAS TOLD THAT MY CAR WAS INDEED LOSING ABNORMALLY EXCESSIVE AMOUNTS OF OIL AND THAT THE FIRST STEP TO REMEDYING THE MATTER WOULD REQUIRE TAKING THE ENGINE APART. AT THIS POINT MY MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED AND I AM NOW RELYING ON MY EXTENDED WARRANTY. AFTER RESEARCHING THE PROBLEM, I FOUND THAT THE EXCESSIVE LOSS OF OIL IN CARS LIKE MINE IS A ISSUE THAT TOYOTA IS VERY FAMILIAR WITH. IN 2011, TOYOTA ISSUED A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN ACKNOWLEDGING THE PROBLEM. THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP WHICH SERVICED MY CAR NEVER TOLD ME THIS EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. THE DEALERSHIP HAS TOLD ME THAT THE EXTENDED WARRANTY MAY DECIDE NOT TO COVER THE COST OF REPAIR AFTER THE ENGINE HAS BEEN REMOVED AND TAKEN APART AT WHICH POINT I WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYING FOR THE REPAIRS. HOWEVER, IF THE REPAIR NEEDED TO BE DONE WHEN MY CAR WAS UNDER MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY, THEN WHY DIDN'T THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP REPAIR IT? THE TSB WAS ISSUED IN 2011 AND I BEGAN BRINGING MY CAR TO THEM IN 2012. I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY TO HAVE MY CAR REPAIRED. *TR
I BROUGHT MY VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR THE REAR SUSPENSION RECALL AND WHEN I PICKED IT UP I WAS ADVISED THAT THE STEERING SHAFT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AND THERE IS A CLUNKING SOUND WHEN TURNING THE WHEEL. THE SERVICE ADVISOR TOLD ME THE SHAFT IS CRACKED AND COULD BE DANGEROUS. I NEVER NOTICED ANY STEERING SOUNDS BUT NOW THAT I'M SPECIFICALLY LISTENING FOR IT I DO HEAR IT. I BELIEVE THAT IF THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AS THE DEALER STATED THEN THE VEHICLE SHOULD BE RECALLED. MOST OWNERS WILL NOT KNOW THEY HAVE THIS PROBLEM SINCE THE SOUND IS NOT THAT NOTICEABLE AND I ASSUME THAT IF LEFT UNCORRECTED LOSS OF STEERING WILL OCCUR. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA RAV4. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 38 MPH, THE REAR BACK WHEELS LOCKED UP AND THE VEHICLE SWERVED FROM SIDE TO SIDE. ALSO, THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DOWNWARD HILL ASSIST WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED WHEN THE WHEELS LOCKED UP. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN RECALL NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 13V383000 (SUSPENSION). HOWEVER, THE PART TO DO THE REPAIR WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE MANUFACTURER HAD BEEN NOTIFIED OF THE ISSUE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 125,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA RAV4. WHILE DRIVING 10 MPH, THE AIR BAG WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE FAILURE OCCURRED NUMEROUS TIMES. AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC STATED THAT THE AIR BAG FAILED. VERY CLUNKY AND NOISY STEERING RESULTING AN A VAGUE, UNSAFE SENSE OF CONTROL OVER THE VEHICLE. TOOK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS REPAIRED (REPLACED INTERMEDIATE STEERING COLUMN). SUBSEQUENT RESEARCH HAS SHOWN THAT THIS IS A COMMON AND WELL KNOWN DESIGN FLAW. *TR

THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DUE FOR AN OIL CHANGE UNTIL ANOTHER 600 MILES. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE AND PLACED THE VEHICLE UNDER A 1,000 MILE OIL CONSUMPTION TEST. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 62,000. UPDATED 10/30/14*CN UPDATED 7/9/2015*JS
AS SOON AS I BACK UP OUT OF THE GARAGE, THERE IS A CLUNKING NOISE AS I TURN THE STEERING WHEEL. IT IS MORE PRONOUNCED WHEN I TURN THE WHEEL, MORE SO TURNING TO THE RIGHT. I TOOK IT INTO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT AND HAD 2 EMPLOYEES DRIVE IT. THEY BOTH AGREED IT WAS COMING FROM THE STEERING COLUMN, POSSIBLY A BRACKET. WHEN I TURN IT ALMOST FEELS LIKE THE WHEEL DOESN'T WANT TO GO ANY FURTHER, MAKES THIS LOUD CLUNKING SOUND THEN LETS GO. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR THE LAST FEW MONTHS AND THE TIGHTNESS IN THE TURN HAS WORSENED.
ON 08/09/14 WE WERE DRIVING IN PARKING LOT WITH 5 PEOPLE IN CAR. STARTED DRIVING AND ENGINE SUDDENLY STOPPED. CAR GLIDED TO A STOP WITH GEARS AND STEERING WHEEL LOCKED. CAR WOULD NOT RESTART. CALLED AAA FOR A TOW 20+ MILES AWAY TO CLOSEST TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND THEN GOT TRANSPORT FOR OURSELVES TO HOTEL FOR THE NIGHT. NEXT MORNING GOT RENTAL CAR TO DRIVE TO TOYOTA DEALER WHERE CAR HAD BEEN TOWED TO. REPAIR WAS SIMPLY A BLOWN FUSE FOR VEHICLE REMOTE STARTER WHICH WAS ODDLY LOCATED UNDER STEERING WHEEL. SIMILAR INCIDENT HAPPENED (03/12/08) WHILE DIVING IN CANADA AND REPAIRED THEN AT A TOYOTA DEALER AT 12,101 KM. THE REMOTE STARTER WAS PART OF ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT ON THE NEW CAR. NOW, WE FEAR DRIVING RAV4 ON HIGHWAY AT ANY SPEED FOR FEAR CAR WILL SUDDENLY STOP AND STEERING WILL LOCK UP. REMOTE STARTER NEEDS TO BE REMOVED OR FIXED AT IT IS NOT SAFE. *TR
AIR BAG ISSUE.
THE DRIVER'S SIDE SUN VISOR NO LONGER STAYS IN PLACE WHEN STOWED AND INSTEAD DROOPS DOWN AT APPROXIMATELY A 40 DEGREE ANGLE. THIS IMPAIRS DRIVER'S VISIBILITY AS IT FALLS SQUARELY WITHIN THE DRIVER'S FIELD OF VISION. IT ALSO BECOMES A DISTRACTION IN THAT THE DRIVER IS CONSTANTLY PUSHING THE VISOR BACK INTO PLACE, TO NO EFFECT. THE PROBLEM IS IMPAIRED VISIBILITY DUE TO A FAILING PART. THIS IS A WELL DOCUMENTED ISSUE FOR TOYOTA AND YET TOYOTA REFUSES TO CORRECT THIS OBVIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. *TR
MY 2007 TOYOTA RAV4 STARTED TO CONSUME COPIOUS AMOUNTS OF OIL. THERE ARE NO SIGNS OF OIL LEAKAGE AND NO SMOKE FROM THE EXHAUST PIPE. I ALWAYS HAVE THE OIL CHANGED AT A TOYOTA DEALER SINCE I PURCHASED THE CAR NEW. AFTER MY RECENT OIL CHANGE, I DROVE APPROXIMATELY 1,500 MILES AND HAD TO PUT IN 2 QUARTS OF OIL. I ASSUMED THIS WAS A FLUKE AND TOYOTA DID NOT FILL THE OIL UP. BUT NOW AGAIN, I DROVE ANOTHER 1,500 MILES AND THIS TIME IT WAS BONE DRY ON THE DIP STICK. I DID NOT RECEIVE A LOW OIL LIGHT. I ADDED ANOTHER 2 QUARTS OF OIL TO BRING IT UP TO THE BOTTOM LINE. *TR
JUST AFTER OIL CHANGE, ABOUT ONE WEEK LATER AND HAVING DRIVEN ABOUT 500 MILES, OIL WAS ALREADY ONE QUART LOW. SINCE THEN IT VARIES, BUT IT BURNS MORE OIL THAN ANY CAR I'VE EVER OWNED. ON AVERAGE I NEED TO ADD 2-4 QUARTS OF OIL BETWEEN OIL CHANGES, WHICH I PERFORM EVERY 3000 MILES. MY CONCERN IS THAT THE OIL CONSUMPTION WILL PROGRESSIVELY GET WORSE. AN OBVIOUS DEFECT HERE SOMEWHERE. *TR

THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 106,000.
RIGHT REAR LOWER SUSPENSION ARM SNAPPED CAUSING THE RIGHT REAR TIRE TO TURN TO THE SIDE, CAUSING US TO LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. I WAS ABLE TO GAIN CONTROL AND STOP THE CAR DUE TO THE LOW RATE OF SPEED. WE HAD A RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM. TOYOTA INSTALLED A TEMPORARY FIX, HOWEVER WHEN WE RECEIVED AN UPDATED RECALL, WE CONTINUALLY CALLED TO HAVE THE PERMANENT FIX ONLY TO BE TOLD THAT THE PART WAS NOT AVAILABLE WE ASKED THEM TO CALL US WHEN THE PART ARRIVED AND THEY WOULD NOT AGREE TO THIS. WE HAVE CALLED THEM CONTINUOUSLY BUT THEY NEVER HAD THE PART. CALLED TOYOTA TODAY AND THEY CANNOT HELP ME TODAY. THEY WILL NOT APPROVE TOWING, RENTAL CAR, OR REPAIR AS OF THIS DATE. THE EXTERNAL OIL PRESSURE LINE TO THE REAR CYLINDER HEAD BUSTED WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE. THIS CAUSED THE ENGINE TO COMPLETELY DUMP ALL 6 QUARTS OF MOTOR OIL ONTO THE HIGHWAY. FORTUNATE FOR ME I WAS ONLY 0.8 MILES FROM AN EXIT WITH A SAFE PARKING LOT. I DO NOT KNOW IF THE OIL FROM MY VEHICLE CAUSED ANY WRECKS ON THE INTERSTATE, HOWEVER THE POTENTIAL FOR A MOTORCYCLE WRECK OR ANY VEHICLE THAT HAD TO MAKE A SUDDEN SLOW DOWN OR QUICK MANEUVER WOULD BE AT A HIGH RISK OF AN ACCIDENT. NOT ONLY DID THIS PUT MY ENGINE AT RISK FOR CATASTROPHIC FAILURE, BUT IT COULD HAVE BEEN COMPLETELY AVOIDED. TOOK THE CAR TO A TOYOTA DEALER TO REPLACE THE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFTS AS DETAILED BY THE T-SB. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION THE TECHNICIAN REPORTED THAT BOTH THE INTERMEDIATE SHAFT AND THE STEERING RACK HAVE PLAY IN THEM AND RECOMMENDED THAT THEY BOTH BE REPLACED. THE SERVICE ADVISOR STATED THAT THIS WILL BECOME A SAFETY ISSUE IF NOT REPAIRED AND CAN LEAD TO LOSS OF STEERING. THE ESTIMATE FOR THE REPAIR WAS $2700 SINCE THE EXTENDED WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED TWO MONTH PRIOR TO TAKING THE VEHICLE IN. GIVEN THAT THERE IS A SAFETY CONCERN, I OPTED TO HAVE THE RECOMMENDED SERVICE DONE AND PAID $2731.77 FOR THE REPAIR. CUSTOMER MUST PAY FOR OIL CHANGE IN ORDER TO BEGIN PROCESS, REGARDLESS OF PAST EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT CLAIMS OF EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION. I NOW STILL HAVE ABOUT 2000 MILES TO GO BEFORE MY CAR NEEDS ANOTHER OIL CHANGE AND IT WAS AGAIN LOW AND ANOTHER QUART WAS ADDED. PER MY RESEARCH I FIND THAT TOYOTA HAS KNOWN ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND SENT OUT INFO TO DEALERS IN 2011 TO FIX THE PROBLEM IF IT IS STILL UNDER WARRANTY.
