SINCE DECEMBER, 2009, MY 2006 TOYOTA SIENNA'S AIRBAG LIGHT KEEPS COMING ON, THEN GOING OFF, COMING ON, GOING OFF, ETC. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP WHEN IT FIRST HAPPENED AND WAS TOLD I NEEDED A NEW DRIVER'S SIDE AIRBAG. I WAS TOLD IT WOULD NOT BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. WHY WOULD AN AIRBAG NEED REPLACING AFTER ONLY OWNING MY VAN BARELY THREE YEARS? I MIGHT ADD THAT WHILE MY VAN WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY, THEY HAD TO PREVIOUSLY FIX AN AIRBAG SENSOR. WHEN I REALIZED THE LIGHT WOULD GO OFF AND STAY OFF (SOMETIME FOR A WEEK OR MORE AT A TIME), I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP BACK (TWICE). THE FIRST TIME THE LADY SAID, "OH, IT MAY COME ON AGAIN, BUT MAYBE YOU'LL BE LUCKY". WHAT KIND OF ANSWER IS THAT? TODAY, I AGAIN CALLED THE DEALERSHIP, MENTIONING HOW MANY OTHER PEOPLE ARE HAVING THIS EXACT SAME PROBLEM WITH THEIR TOYOTA SIENNAS AND THE SERVICE GUY CLAIMS TO HAVE NOT HEARD ANYTHING ABOUT IT. THE DEALERSHIP CLAIMS I NEED TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE AIRBAG. IF THE ENTIRE AIRBAG TRULY NEEDED REPLACING, WHY WOULD THE WARNING LIGHT GO OFF FOR A WEEK OR TWO AT A TIME AND COME ON AND GO OFF INTERMITTENTLY? AND I ALSO HAD A PREVIOUS ISSUE WITH THE AIRBAG WHILE THE VAN WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY. I'M LEFT WONDERING WHAT THE REAL PROBLEM IS AND THE FACT THAT I HAVE NOW BEEN ON SEVERAL DIFFERENT WEB SITES WHERE OTHER PEOPLE ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE EXACT SAME THING MAKES ME WONDER IF THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL ISSUE. MY 2006 TOYOTA SIENNA, OF WHICH I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER, HAS A PASSENGER SIDE REAR SLIDING DOOR. WITHOUT WARNING THE DOOR REFUSED TO CLOSE. THE CABLE HAD POPPED OUT AND THE DOOR WILL NOT CLOSE. WE CANNOT DRIVE THE CAR BECAUSE IT IS A SAFETY HAZARD TO DRIVE WITH AN OPEN DOOR. WE HAVE TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED TO A REPAIR PLACE AND THEN PAY FOR WHATEVER THE REPAIR WOULD BE. WE CANNOT AFFORD TO DO THIS. APPARENTLY THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WHICH THE DEALER SHOULD COVER AS IT IS A SAFETY HAZARD. *TR
2006 TOYOTA SIENNA XLE; DOOR BEGAN OPENING WHEN IN AN UNLOCKED POSITION. THEN UNABLE TO CLOSE DOOR AND THEREFORE UNABLE TO OPERATE VEHICLE IS SAFE MANNER. CONTACTED DEALER; AFTER INSPECTING VEHICLE TOLD CABLE FRAYING/FAILURE SIDE DOOR STUCK IN OPEN POSITION. DEALER STATES UNABLE TO RECTIFY PROBLEM BY OVERRIDING CABLE SYSTEM TO ALLOW DOOR TO BE OPERATED MANUALLY; FORCED TO REPLACE ENTIRE MECHANICAL DOOR OPERATION SYSTEM BECAUSE OF CABLE FAILURE RESULTING IN COST OF APPROXIMATELY $2000 TO DEALER. *TR
POWER SLIDER DOOR FAILED ON 2006 SIENNA VAN. WILL NOT CLOSE. *TR
1. CRUISE CONTROL DEVICE ON MY 1996 TOYOTA SIENNA HAS BEEN BEHAVING ERRATICALLY SINCE ABOUT 2 MONTHS. IT HAS OVER 45000 MILES ON THE ODOMETER AND IS THUS OUT OF WARRANTY. 2. MECHANICALLY THERE DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE ANY DEFECT. HOWEVER THE FOLLOWING ANOMALIES ARE BEING OBSERVED DURING THE PAST 2 MONTHS. A: 90% OF THE TIME IN SPEEDS IN EXCESS OF 50 MPH, WHEN I TRY TO SET THE CRUISING SPEED BY PRESSING THE CCL (CRUISE CONTROL LEVER) DOWNWARDS, NOTHING HAPPENS. IN MORE THAN 50% OF THESE TIMES, IF I LIFT THE CCL UPWARDS (NORMALLY THE METHOD TO RE-SET CRUISING SPEED AFTER BRAKING/SLOWING DOWN) THE CRUISING SPEED GETS SET. B. UNDER CONDITIONS AS IN 'A' ABOVE MANY OF THE OPERATIONS OF THE CCL APPEARS TO HAPPEN IN AN INVERTED MANNER, LIKE SETTING INSTEAD OF RE-SETTING, RE-SETTING INSTEAD OF SETTING, ETC. 3. IT APPEARS THERE IS SOMETHING DEFINITELY WRONG WITH THE ELECTRONICS OF THE CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM, AND WHILE THIS HAS NOT HAPPENED SO FAR, MAY IN FACT, CAUSE UNWARRANTED DE-CELERATION/ACCELERATION, AND COULD CAUSE ACCIDENTS. 4. IT IS EMPHASIZED THAT THESE ANOMALIES HAVE *** NOT *** CAUSED ANY ACCIDENT YET. THIS VEHICLE IS *** NOT *** INCLUDED IN ANY UNEXPECTED ACCELERATION-RELATED RECALLS. BUT THIS BEHAVIOR OF THE CRUISE CONTROL MAY HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH UNUSUAL ACCELERATIONS. *TR
NO ACCIDENT OR FATALITIES, BUT I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THE RAPIDLY DETERIORATING CONDITION OF ALL FOUR 17" ALLOY WHEELS (PAINTED ALUMINUM). CORROSION IS PROGRESSING SINCE THE TIME I FIRST NOTICED IT STARTING (APPROXIMATE INCIDENT DATE). CURRENT MILEAGE IS 74,000. THE PAINT IS BLISTERING STARTING AT THE INSIDE EDGE OF EACH WHEEL OPENING. IT IS QUITE SEVERE AND I AM CONCERNED THAT IF THIS IS NOT ADDRESSED, THE CORROSION MIGHT PROPAGATE A CRACK IN ONE OF THE WHEEL SPOKES. I HAVE ANOTHER CAR WITH MORE THAN TWICE THE MILEAGE WITH SIMILARLY PAINTED WHEELS WITH NO CORROSION AFTER 36 YEARS. THIS VEHICLE HAS SEEN THREE TIMES THE NUMBER OF WINTERS WITH SALTED ROADS. MY 1986 PORSCHE 944 WASN'T WASHED IN THE WINTER ANY MORE FREQUENTLY THAN THE TOYOTA. IT APPEARS THIS PROBLEM WITH TOYOTA IS SO PREVALENT THAT THEY PREFER DISGRUNTLED CUSTOMERS OVER RESPONSIBLY ADDRESSING THIS PROBLEM. *TR
2006 TOYOTA SIENNA RIMS ARE BUBBLING/FLAKING OFF. STARTING TO RUST. *TR
I HAVE BRAKING FAILURE IN MY 2006 TOYOTA SIENNA LIMITED AWD VEHICLE. I HAVE TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO MY MECHANICS WHO HAS BEEN UNABLE TO PROPERLY DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. THERE ARE MANY REPORTS OF THIS PROBLEM ON THE INTERNET AND TOYOTA WILL NOT DISCLOSE THE RESOLUTION TO THIS COMMONLY REPORTED PROBLEM WITHOUT CHARGING A $89.99 DIAGNOSTICS CHARGE. THE REPAIR IS REPORTEDLY $1,200 TO $2,000 TOFIX THIS PROBLEM. I BELIEVE THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT SHOULD BE RECALLED. *TR
I HAVE HAD 4 OF 7 TOYO OBSERVE SNOW TIRES EXPERIENCE TREAD SEPARATION OVER THE LAST THREE YEARS. I AM WONDERING IF OTHER PEOPLE ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEMS. *TR
AUTOMATIC DOOR FAILURE. *TR
RIGHT-SIDE POWER SLIDING DOOR IS BEGINNING TO FAIL. THERE ARE THERE HINGES THAT SUPPORT THE DOOR. TWO ARE LOCATED AT THE FRONT OF THE DOOR (ONE AT THE TOP AND ONE AT THE BOTTOM). THE THIRD HINGE IS LOCATED AT THE REAR OF THE DOOR (IN THE CENTER). IT IS THE CENTER HINGE WHICH IS FAILING. THE HINGE IS SAGGING, AND SCRAPING THE REAR BODY PANEL (UNDER THE REAR QUARTER WINDOW). GIVEN THE FAILURE OF THE HINGE, PROPER CLEARANCES ARE NOT MAINTAINED, AND THE DOOR SCRAPES THE FRONT EDGE OF THAT BODY PANEL. IT ALSO CATCHES ON THE DOOR FRAME (BODY FRAME) WHEN OPENING AND CLOSING. THIS IS A WELL-DOCUMENTED PROBLEM WITH THESE VANS AND TOYOTA REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE ANY FAULT. EVENTUALLY THIS DOOR WILL CEASE TO FUNCTION. OTHERS HAVE HAD IT FAIL IN THE OPEN POSITION, WHILE OTHERS HAVE HAD IT FAIL IN THE CLOSED POSITION. THERE HAVE BEEN RECORDED INCIDENTS OF THIS FAILURE CAUSING STRAIN ON THE CABLE THAT CONTROLS THE FUNCTION OF THIS DOOR (LEADING TO IT FRAYING/SNAPPING). OTHER OWNERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THE REAR QUARTER WINDOW SHATTERING AND EVEN HAVING THE DOOR FALL OFF. LIGHT INTERNET RESEARCH (USING THE TERM "SIENNA SLIDING DOOR" OR "SIENNA SLIDING DOOR FAILURE" WILL HELP TO REVEAL THE GRAVITY OF THIS PROBLEM AND THE EXTENT TO WHICH THE CONSUMERS ARE FEELING IT. AVERAGE COST FOR REPAIR IS IN EXCESS OF $1500.00. PLEASE FORCE A RECALL. MAKE TOYOTA OWN UP TO THIS ISSUE AND ITS RESOLUTION. *TR
THE SIX WAY AUTOMATIC DRIVERS' SEAT SHIFTS WHILE DRIVING. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA SIENNA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE GAS STRUTS WERE LOSING POWER AND THE REAR LIFTGATE WOULD NOT ONLY LIFT 1/4 TO THE ITS HIGHEST POSITION. RECALL 08V244000 WAS RELATED TO THE FAILURE IN SEPTEMBER 2008 AND IT WAS REPAIRED ACCORDING TO THE DEALER; HOWEVER, SHE NOTICED THE FAILURE IN OCTOBER 2009. A SECOND DEALER CONFIRMED THAT THE RECALL REMEDY WAS PERFORMED IN 2008, SHE HAD TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE AT HER EXPENSE. THE MANUFACTURER OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED TO-DATE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 89,903. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 78,000.
I HAVE A 2006 TOYOTA SIENNA MINIVAN. THE LATCH ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE PASSENGER SLIDING DOOR FAILED TO KEEP THE DOOR SECURED WHEN DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD. THE DOOR WOULD BECOME UNLATCHED AND OPEN SLIGHTLY IN TRANSIT. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER AND THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE LATCH WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. I TALKED TO THE SERVICE MANAGER WHO TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS NOTHING HE COULD DO ABOUT IT NOR WAS IT COVERED BY ANY RECALL OR WARRANTY. I TRIED TO HAVE THE REGIONAL PARTS MANAGER CALL ME, HOWEVER, HE WOULD NOT RETURN MY CALL. THIS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE FOR TOYOTA, BUT THEY DID NOT WANT TO HEAR ABOUT IT NOR DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. WHAT REALLY BOTHERS ME IS THAT THIS DOOR GETS USED WHEN THE GRANDCHILDREN ARE TRAVELING WITH US. I FIND IT VERY UPSETTING THAT THIS DOOR UNLATCHES BY ITSELF WITHOUT ANY PRIOR WARNING. *TR
2006 TOYOTA SIENNA MANUAL SLIDING DOORS HAVE FAULTY LATCH SYSTEM. AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK WHEN I OPEN THEM THEY WILL NOT LATCH OPEN. I'VE DISCOVERED WHY IT WON'T LATCH, BUT DEALERSHIP REFUSES TO FIX IT SINCE THEY CANNOT REPRODUCE IT. IT HAPPENS TO BOTH DOORS AT THE SAME TIME AND TEN MINUTES LATER THEY ARE BOTH WORKING AGAIN. I HAVE ACTUALLY BEEN HIT IN THE HEAD ONCE ALREADY WHEN THE DOOR FLEW BACK AT ME INSTEAD OF LOCKING IN PLACE. *TR
I OWN A 2006 TOYOTA SIENNA AND SOON AS I GOT IT, THE AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON. I TOOK IT TO HE DEALER IMMEDIATELY AND IT WAS REPAIRED BUT THEY NEVER GAVE AN EXPLANATION AS TO WHAT CAUSED THAT TO HAPPEN. BUT IT IS HAPPENING AGAIN. THE LIGHT IS CONSTANTLY ON AND IT DISTRACTS ME WHEN I AM DRIVING AND AM VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF MY PASSENGERS BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW IF AIRBAGS WILL DEPLOY IN CASE OF AN ACCIDENT. 2006 TOYOTA SIENNA. CONSUMER STATES OSCILLATION PROBLEMS WITH VEHICLE. *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED HE WAS DRIVING DOWN FROM THE TOP OF A MOUNTAIN AND HE APPLIED THE BRAKES TO LIMIT HIS SPEED. THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL WENT INTO A VIOLENT OSCILLATION AND HE WAS BARELY ABLE TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE. HE STOPPED BRAKING AND SHIFTED INTO A LOWER GEAR. HE APPLIED THE BRAKES AGAIN AND THE OSCILLATION RETURNED. WHEN HE REACHED THE BOTTOM OF THE HILL, THE OSCILLATION WENT AWAY. THE CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR AN INSPECTION. UPON, INSPECTION THE DEALER STATED THERE MAY HAVE BEEN A PROBLEM WITH THE ABS, BUT THEY COULD NOT VERIFY IT. ON DECEMBER 11, 2009 THE PROBLEM OCCURRED AGAIN. THE CONSUMER WAS DRIVING NORTH DOWN A GRAPEVINE INCLINE, WHEN THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL STARTED TO OSCILLATE. THE CONSUMER IMMEDIATELY DOWN SHIFTED AS HE WAS MUCH MORE PREPARED. THE PROBLEM OCCURRED AGAIN ON FEBRUARY 13, 2010 WHILE DRIVING ON A FLAT SECTION OF A HIGHWAY. HE APPLIED THE BRAKES AND BOTH WHEELS STARTED TO OSCILLATE. *JB
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA SIENNA. THE CONTACT STATED THE AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE UNKNOWN REPAIRS WERE MADE TO THE AIR BAGS. UPON STARTING THE VEHICLE, THE AIR BAG LIGHT WAS STILL ILLUMINATED. THE DEALER MADE A SECOND REPAIR TO THE AIR BAGS. SINCE THE REPAIR, THE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS. ATTEMPTS TO CORRECT THE FAILURE WERE MADE A TOTAL OF FOUR TIMES, ALL AT THE CONTACTS EXPENSE. THE MANUFACTURER WOULD NOT PROVIDE ANY ASSISTANCE, CLAIMING THEY HAD NOT RECEIVED ANY SIMILAR COMPLAINTS ON HER YEAR, MAKE AND MODEL. THERE WERE NO RECALLS. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 21,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 69,000.
THE PASSENGER SIDE ELECTRIC SLIDING DOOR HAS FAILED. THE DOOR KEPT GOING OPEN AND SHUT ONE EVENING AND THEN STAYED SHUT AND HAS BEEN INOPERABLE SINCE. THE DOOR WILL NOT OPEN MANUALLY NOW AND HAS CREATED A SAFETY HAZARD. TOYOTA HAS REFUSED TO FIX THE PROBLEM AND SAYS THAT IT CAN ONLY REPLACE THE MOTOR WHICH WILL COST OVER $2000. THE FAILURE IS THAT THE DOOR WILL NOT OPEN AT ALL. IT IS A SAFETY HAZARD FOR THE PASSENGERS. THE DOOR HAS A MANUAL MODE, AND SHOULD THEREFORE BE ABLE TO OPERATE MANUALLY WITHOUT THE MOTOR. THE DEALERSHIP WOULD DO NOTHING TO HELP BESIDES CHARGE OVER $2000 FOR WHAT WILL SURELY BE A TEMPORARY REPAIR. *TR
FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG / LIGHT 1. THE FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG LIGHT REPEATED IS SWITCHED TO THE "OFF" POSITION WHEN AN ADULT OF AVERAGE SIZE AND WEIGHT IS SEATED IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. 2. WE OFTEN HAVE TO MANUALLY PLUG/UNPLUG THE WIRES UNDERNEATH THE SEAT TO RESET THE AIRBAG TO SWITCH TO THE "ON" POSITION, BUT THIS DOES NOT ALWAYS WORK. WE HAVE NOT YET TAKEN IT TO A DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THIS CORRECTED. *TR
OUR SLIDING DOOR STOPPED WORKING ABOUT A YEAR AGO. THIS MORNING, DESPITE THE ELECTRIC DOORS BEING TURNED OFF, WHILE MY HUSBAND WAS DRIVING WITH ALL 4 OF OUR BABIES THE DOOR OPENED AND GOT STUCK. MY HUSBAND CAN'T OPEN OR CLOSE THE DOOR. *TR

REAR PASSENGER SLIDING DOOR WILL NOT LOCK..REMAINS UNLOCKED AND AJAR IN BOTH MANUAL AND POWER SETTING. DOOR HAS LARGE SCRATCH ON SIDE. DOOR WORKED FINE FOR THREE MONTHS AFTER SCRATCH THEN STOPPED WORKING. TOOK VAN TO ADVANTAGE TOYOTA IN LYNNBROOK NY WHO BLAMED LOCK PROBLEM ON DOOR SCRATCH AND WILL NOT FIX UNDER EXTENDED WARRANTY. *TR
THE REAR POWER SLIDING DOOR ON MY 2006 TOYOTA SIENNA WAGON SHUT ON MY CHILD'S THUMB EVEN THOUGH IT SUPPOSEDLY HAS A MECHANISM TO PREVENT IT FROM TRAPPING BODY PARTS. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA SIENNA. THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED WHEN THE CONTACT OBSERVED THE DEFECTIVE REAR CENTER SEAT BELT. THE CHILD WAS PROPERLY SECURED IN THE REAR DRIVER SIDE SEAT USING THE SEAT BELT SYSTEM. THE SEAT BELT ENTANGLED AROUND THE OCCUPANT'S NECK. THERE WAS DIFFICULTY DISENGAGING THE SEAT BELT. THE CONTACT CUT THE SEATBELT AND FREED THE OCCUPANT. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED FOR THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 60,628.
MY WIFE WAS DRIVING ON A SINGLE LANE SUBURBAN ROAD GOING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH. SHE TRIED TO SLOW DOWN USING THE BRAKES, BUT THE CAR WOULDN'T SLOW DOWN. SHE TRIED THE BRAKE A SECOND TIME, BUT THE CAR DIDN'T SLOW DOWN. SINCE THERE WERE VEHICLES IN FRONT OF HER, SHE WENT OFF THE ROAD (FORTUNATELY BY AN OPEN FIELD) AND SIDE SWIPED A POLE AND WENT DOWN INTO A SMALL RAVINE. THE ENTIRE DRIVERS SIDE OF THE CAR WAS DAMAGED...OVER $12,000. THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER ASSURED US THAT THE BRAKES WERE FINE. TOYOTA (PARENT COMPANY) WAS NOT MUCH HELP. WITH ALL THE RECENT MEDIA ATTENTION WITH THE STUCK ACCELERATORS, I ASKED THE DEALER TO CHECK FOR THAT AS WELL....THEY SAID THE CAR IS FINE. *CN
TOYOTA SIENNA ROLLOVER ACCIDENT AT LOW SPEED (35 MPH) RESULTING IN ROOF AND DRIVER SIDE STRUCTURAL FAILURE AND FATAL CRUSHING INJURY TO DRIVER. *TR
2006 TOYOTA SIENNA AWD. PURCHASED 12/06. HAD TO REPLACE ALL 4 RUN FLAT TIRES 3/08. ON 8/13/09 TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM LIGHT CAME ON. ON 8/14/09 TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALERSHIP WHICH CONFIRMED TIRE PRESSURE WAS OKAY ON ALL 4 TIRES AND LIGHT WAS TURNED OFF. ON 8/15/09 DRIVER SIDE FRONT TIRE WENT FLAT WHILE DRIVING; HOT TO TOUCH, SMELLED LIKE WAS BURNING, BUT NO FIRE. LIGHT NEVER WENT ON. VEHICLE WAS IMMEDIATELY TOWED TO DEALERSHIP. ON 8/17/09 TIRE WAS REPLACED AND PICKED UP VEHICLE ON 8/18/09 AND LIGHT WAS OFF. BY END OF DAY ON 8/18/09 LIGHT WAS BACK ON. *TR

THE BURNING BELT RESULTED IN A LITTLE SMOKE AND A FEARFUL SMELL FILLING THE CABIN. FEARING A FIRE, I WAS FORCED TO PULL OFF THE ROAD PUTTING MYSELF AND MY THREE CHILDREN IN HARMS WAY. AFTER DETERMINING THERE WAS NOT A FIRE, WE CLIMBED BACK IN THE VAN AND CONTINUED ON OUR WAY. AFTER A LITTLE RESEARCH, I'VE LEARNED THE COMPRESSOR PROBLEMS ARE NOT UNCOMMON IN TOYOTA SIENNA. IN MY CASE OUR VEHICLE HAD LESS THAN 45K MILES. SEEMS THERE ARE MANY UNSATISFIED SIENNA OWNERS WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED A SIMILAR PROBLEM, AND TOYOTA SHOULD CONSIDER RECALLING ALL VEHICLES WITH THIS AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM. I FEEL THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN SINCE THE MINI-VAN IS CONSIDERED A FAMILY VEHICLE. *TR
MY 4 YEAR OLD SON AND HIS 7 YEAR OLD COUSIN WERE SITTING IN THE BACK SEAT OF OUR TOYOTA SIENNA VAN, EACH ON EITHER SIDE WITH THE MIDDLE SEAT EMPTY. ALL OF A SUDDEN, MY SON GASPED, "HELP ME, PLEASE HELP ME." MY MOTHER, WHO WAS DRIVING, LOOKED BACK THROUGH THE REARVIEW MIRROR AND SAW THAT MY SON HAD THE MIDDLE SEAT SEATBELT WRAPPED AROUND HIS NECK THREE TIMES (THAT BELT HANGS FROM THE CEILING IN OUR SIENNA VAN). HE COULD GASP A BIT OF AIR, BUT IT WAS TIGHT AND GETTING TIGHTER EVERY TIME HE MOVED. MY MOTHER WHIPPED THE CAR INTO A DRIVEWAY AND JUMPED IN THE BACKSEAT TO FREE HIM. THE BELT WAS WRAPPED SO TIGHTLY AROUND HIS NECK THAT SHE COULDN'T BUDGE IT AND EVERY LITTLE MOVEMENT MADE IT LOCK IN TIGHTER. SHE WEDGED TWO FINGERS BETWEEN HIS THROAT AND THE BELT TO TRY TO KEEP IT LOOSE ENOUGH FOR HIM TO BREATHE AND GOT MY NEPHEW TO GET HER CELL PHONE. SHE CALLED 911 AND THEY CAME AND HAD TO CUT HIM OUT TO FREE HIM. WHEN WE QUESTIONED MY SON AFTERWARDS, HE SAID HE HAD JUST BEEN PLAYING WITH THE BELT AND DIDN'T THINK IT WOULD GET STUCK AROUND HIS NECK. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS CURRENTLY BEING REPAIRED BY AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
AIRBAGS INTERMITTENTLY AND UNPREDICTABLY BECOME NON-FUNCTIONAL. THAT IS, THE WARNING LIGHT GOES ON AND OFF AT UNPREDICTABLE INTERVALS. I AM TOLD BY THE DEALER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVES THAT THE AIRBAGS ARE NON-FUNCTIONAL (I.E., SYSTEM SHUT DOWN) WHEN THE WARNING LIGHT IS FLASHING. THIS IS A SEVERE SAFETY CONCERN TO ME FOR THE SAKE OF MY FAMILY. IT IS GALLING SINCE THE AIRBAG SYSTEM WAS A MAJOR SELLING POINT OF THE CAR. ATTEMPTED REPAIRS BY DEALER ON AUGUST 4, 2009 UNDER WARRANTY REPLACED THE AIRBAG ASSEMBLY ON ONE SIDE BUT DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM OF REPEATED INTERMITTENT FAILURE. AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY, TOYOTA REFUSED TO ADDRESS THEIR FAILED ATTEMPTS AT REPAIR, AND I WAS QUOTED WELL OVER $2,000 TO FIX THE PROBLEM AS PER TOYOTA SERVICE BULLETIN T-SB-1062-10 ON JULY 20, 2011. THIS PROPOSED REPAIR APPARENTLY INCLUDED REPLACING THE PREVIOUSLY REPLACED AIRBAG AS WELL AS THE ASSEMBLY ON THE OTHER SIDE. I DELAYED THE REPAIR AT RISK TO FAMILY ON ACCOUNT OF THE EXTREME COST. ALSO, I APPEALED TO TOYOTA CORPORATE REPRESENTATIVES SINCE THE PROBLEM HAD BEEN A PERSISTENT AND UNREMEDIED ONE SINCE DURING THE WARRANTY PERIOD. RECENTLY, THE TOYOTA DEALER INFORMED ME THAT A NEW TOYOTA SERVICE BULLETIN ISOLATES THE DEFECT SOMEWHAT FROM PREVIOUS TOYOTA T-SB-1062-10 AND REDUCES THE COST OF THE REPAIR TO SOMEWHERE NEAR $400 (ALTHOUGH I PAID $47.50 TO LEARN THAT). BUT AFTER THAT RECENT SERVICE BY TOYOTA ON JUNE 20, 2013, THE WARNING LIGHT IS OFF AGAIN, AND THE AIRBAGS ARE PRESUMABLY FUNCTIONING AGAIN FOR A WHILE. THIS INTERMITTENTLY HAS BEEN THE PROBLEM WITH GETTING THIS DEFECTIVE AIRBAG SYSTEM FIXED UNDER WARRANTY AS IT SHOULD BE. ALSO, THE INTERMITTENT AND REPEATED FAILURE OF THE UNITS SUGGESTS A FAULTY DESIGN AND A SAFETY DEFECT THAT SHOULD BE ADDRESSED IN ALL OF THE VEHICLES. WHEN YOU ATTEMPT TO CLOSE THE DOOR USING THE AUTOMATIC FUNCTION IN ANY FORM (THE SIDE OR FRONT BUTTON OR USE THE HANDLE) IT WILL CLOSE PARTLY AND THEN OPEN AGAIN. I HAVE TO DISENGAGE THE AUTOMATIC AND PUT IT ON MANUAL FOR IT TO WORK. 2006 TOYOTA SIENNA - 40,000 MILES. INVOLVED IN A FRONTAL IMPACT WITH A TREE FROM A PEAK VELOCITY OF 40-45 MPH TO AN ESTIMATED IMPACT SPEED OF 20-25 MPH. THE VEHICLE HIT SQUARE IN HOOD CENTER, DEFORMING EVERYTHING BACKWARD SYMMETRICALLY 1-1.5 FEET. INSURANCE COMPANY CLASSIFIED VEHICLE AS A TOTAL LOSS (DAMAGE > $16,000). DRIVER SUFFERED MULTIPLE LEFT ARM INJURIES INCLUDING WRIST DISLOCATION AND FRACTURED FOREARM BONES - RESULTING BECAUSE AIRBAG NEVER DEPLOYED. I HAVE BEEN IN CONTACT WITH TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE REPS FOR A WEEK AND THEIR EXPLANATION AT FIRST WAS THAT THE IMPACT SPEED WAS NOT GREAT ENOUGH TO DEPLOY THE AIRBAGS. AFTER VIEWING THE PICTURES, THEY CHANGED THEIR POSITION TO STATE THAT BECAUSE IT WAS A CONCENTRATED IMPACT NOT CENTERED ABOUT THE IMPACT SENSOR, AND NOT AN EVENLY DISTRIBUTED LOAD IMPACT, THE SENSORS WOULD NOT HAVE DEPLOYED. UNACCEPTABLE. I ASKED THE CS REP IF WE HAD HIT THE TREE IN THE EXACT SAME SPOT AT 100 MPH, WOULD THE AIRBAG HAVE DEPLOYED AND HER ANSWER WAS 'THEORETICALLY NO'. WHETHER THIS LACK OF DEPLOYMENT WAS BY DESIGN OR NOT, I FEEL THIS IS A HORRIFIC IMPACT PROTECTION PHILOSOPHY. NONE OF US WOULD CHOOSE TO BE IN AN ACCIDENT, AND CERTAINLY NONE OF US ARE GOING TO HAVE CONTROL OVER WHEN AND WHERE AND HOW FAST AND AT WHAT ANGLE WE WILL MAKE IMPACT. THREE MONTHS AFTER THE EXPIRATION OF OUR WARRANTY, THE PROBLEM STARTED GETTING WORSE, WITH THE DOOR REQUIRING PHYSICAL ASSISTANCE TO COMPLETE OPENING OR CLOSING. FINALLY, THE DOOR SIMPLY GOT STUCK SHUT. WE, OR THE DEALERSHIP, ARE UNABLE TO OPEN THE DOOR AT ALL. FIRST, THIS IS HAMPERING THE REPAIRING OF THE DOOR, AS THE DEALERSHIP CLAIMS THEY HAVE TO RIP THE DOOR OUT TO FIX THE PROBLEM, THEREFORE REQUIRING THE PURCHASE OF A NEW DOOR IN ADDITION TO ALL THE OTHER REPAIR AND INSTALLATION COSTS. FAILURE OF THE ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL MODULE ON A 2006 TOYOTA SIENNA XLE LIMITED. THE ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL MODULE, LOCATED UNDER THE FRONT BUMPER ON THE PASSENGER SIDE, FAILS COMPLETELY AND CONTINUOUSLY RESULTING IN COMPLETE FAILURE OF THE CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM. THE MODULE IS NOT SEALED PROPERLY THEREBY ALLOWING MOISTURE INSIDE RESULTING IN CORROSION AND FAILURE OF THE PART. WHEN ACTUATED, THE PART IS DESIGNED TO AUTOMATICALLY SLOW THE VEHICLE WHILE APPROACHING SLOWER TRAFFIC FROM BEHIND. FAILURE OF THIS PART WHILE DRIVING COULD RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT IF THE MODULE DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY SLOW THE VEHICLE PROPERLY. THE VEHICLE IN QUESTION HAS ONLY 21,000 MILES ON IT.
