2005 TOYOTA TACOMA. AT LOW SPEED (25 MPH) USING CRUISE CONTROL, THE VEHICLE OVER-ACCELERATES WHEN IT APPROACHES A HILL OR INCLINE. DISENGAGING THE CRUISE CONTROL ONCE THE OVER-ACCELERATION STARTS SEEMS TO FIX THE PROBLEM. *TR
LEAF SPRING SPLIT IN 3 PLACES, TOYOTA DEALERSHIP WANTS TO DO NOTHING ABOUT IT, SAYS IT'S NOT A MANUFACTURING DEFECT. *TR
MY TOYOTA TACOMA SUDDENLY ACCELERATED TO A DANGEROUS LEVEL OF SPEED WHILE IN CRUISE CONTROL. IT HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES DURING MY LONG DISTANCE TRIP AND SCARED ME INTO NOT USING IT AGAIN. I THOUGHT IT WAS ME DOING SOMETHING WRONG, UNTIL I READ ABOUT OTHER COMPLAINTS. I BOUGHT IT USED IN 2008, AND WASN'T AWARE OF ANY ISSUES UNTIL THE ROAD TRIP THIS YEAR. *TR
MY TACOMA TRUCK HAS A PROBLEM WITH THE BALANCE OF THE FRONT WHEELS. THE DEALER HAS TRIED REPEATEDLY TO CORRECT TO NO AVAIL. I GET A SHIMMY AT 65 MPH. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA TACOMA. THE VEHICLE HAS EL DORADO SPORT FURY SUV TIRES, SIZE P225/75R15. WHILE DRIVING 10 MPH, THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE TIRE BLEW OUT. THE DEALER REPLACED THE TIRE WITH A REGULAR SIZED SPARE TIRE. THE TIRE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 1,500. THE VEHICLE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 37,000. UPDATED 5/18/09 *CN THE CONSUMER STATED WHEN SHE SLOWED DOWN TO MAKE A RIGHT HAND TURN, THE TIRE HIT THE CURB AND BLEW OUT. UPDATED 05/19/09.*JB
THROTTLE GOT STUCK WHILE DRIVING AND WOULD NOT STOP GOING FASTER UNTIL I TURNED OFF ENGINE. IT WAS NOT THE FLOOR MAT THAT CAUSED BUT SOMETHING IN THE THROTTLE ASSY. I DID TAKE IT TO TOYOTA TO DOCUMENT IT. *TR
I NOTICED OCCASIONAL STIFF STEERING FOR A FEW MONTHS WHICH GRADUALLY BECAME WORSE WITH TIME. EVENTUALLY SEEMED LIKE COMPLETE LOSS OF POWER ASSIST STEERING. I FOUND THAT IT WAS THE INTERMEDIATE SHAFT WHICH CONTAINS A UNIVERSAL JOINT THAT HAD BECOME SEIZED. I HAD THIS INTERMEDIATE SHAFT PART REPLACED AT A TOTAL COST OF $885.00. THE NEW PART ORDERED FROM TOYOTA WAS DIFFERENT FROM THE ORIGINAL IN THAT THE NEW PART HAD A BOOT PROTECTING THE UNIVERSAL FROM DIRT DUST AND DEBRIS. *TR
REPLACEMENT OF SPIRAL CABLE ASSEMBLY, DIAGNOSIS, PAPER WORK TO TAKE 4 HOURS TO SIX HOURS TO COMPLETE. THIS WAS QUOTED TO ME BY YOUR TOYOTA DEALERSHIP ( PRECISION TOYOTA) IN THE TUCSON AREA. YET THE NOTIFICATION STATES ONLY 30 MINUTES IS NEEDED TO REPLACE. *TR
VENTILATION FAN SWITCH HAS FAILED AND NO OUTSIDE AIR NOR AIR CONDITIONING FLOWS THROUGH THE VENTILATION SYSTEM ON 2005 TOYOTA TACOMA 4 DOOR LONG-BED PICK-UP TRUCK. *TR
I BOUGHT MY 2005 TACOMA ABOUT 2 MONTHS AGO. I HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM THREE TIMES NOW. THE LAST TIME BEING TONIGHT AFTER PICKING UP MY DAUGHTER AT WORK. THE TRUCK WAS ACCELERATING AND I WAS LITERALLY STANDING ON THE BRAKE AND THE ENGINE WAS RACING AND WOULD NOT STOP. I THROUGH IT INTO NEUTRAL AND IT SOUNDED LIKE IT WAS GOING TO EXPLODE! I HAVE NO RUGS IN MY VEHICLE, IT DID NOT COME WITH ANY, AND I WAS GOING TO GET THE ALL WEATHER MATS, BUT HAVE NOT BOUGHT THEM YET. THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS NOT ENGAGED. I DO CONSIDER MYSELF TO BE A FAIRLY EXPERIENCED DRIVER, I USE TO RACE A 70 CHEVELLE IN THE 1/4 MILE (THIS WAS MANY YEARS AGO.), IF I DID NOT HAVE SUCH EXPERIENCE I AM SURE I WOULD HAVE RAN THE CAR UP A TREE OR SOMETHING. I AM SCARED, I HAVE BEAT CANCER TWICE AND I'LL BE '!@#$% IF I AM GOING TO LET A FAULTY TACOMA TAKE ME OUT! *TR
I WAS ON MY WAY TO WORK WHEN THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME STOPPED TO TURN. I HIT MY BRAKE AT WHICH TIME THE ACCELERATOR STUCK AND I HIT THE VEHICLE. *TR
FRONT LEFT MOTOR MOUNT TORE FROM FRAME, DROPPING MOTOR. FRAME HAS FOOT LONG TEAR WHERE MOTOR MOUNT TORE AWAY. TOYOTA DENIDE CLAIM , NEED HELP. *TR
TRUCK LURCHES FORWARD AFTER COMPLETE STOP. *TR
WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE FREEWAY AT APPROX. 65MPH THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED, AS WE DON'T OFTEN DRIVE OUR VEHICLE IT HAS ONLY OCCURRED 2-3 TIMES(BETWEEN 2008-2009), FORTUNATELY WE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A REASONABLE DISTANCE FROM OTHER VEHICLES WHEN THE TRUCK "TAKES OFF"(IT IS LIKE YOU GUNNED THE GAS PEDAL). AFTER THE ACCELERATION THE TRUCK JUST SLOWS BACK DOWN. WE RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FOR THE FLOOR MAT ISSUE, WHICH THIS IS NOT THE ISSUE, IT STATED WE WOULD BE INFORMED AS TO WHEN WE SHOULD BRING THE VEHICLE IN FOR THAT REPAIR. SO FAR NO OTHER CONTACT HAS BEEN MADE. WITH BRINGING THIS ACCELERATION CONCERN TO THE ATTENTION OF THE DEALER, WE WERE INFORMED THAT ALTHOUGH THE 95 TACOMAS ARE NOT IN THE ACCELERATOR RECALL, THEY WOULD LOOK AT THE GAS PEDDLE AND REPLACE IT IF NEEDED AT OUR EXPENSE MINUS LABOR COSTS. I SEE NOW THAT THIS MAY NOT EVEN FIX THE PROBLEM. SHOULD I BOTHER HAVING THIS REPAIR DONE? *TR
AIR BAG LIGHT STAYS ON. TAKEN TO DEALERSHIP TO HAVE CHECKED OUT AND IT WAS A DEFECTIVE SPIRAL CABLE. 81,000 MILES AND 787.00 REPAIR BILL NOT UNDER A WARRENTY. I HAD TO PAY AND THEN THE SERVICE TECH TELLS ME THIS HAS BEEN A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH TACOMAS LATELY. *TR
WARNING LIGHT FOR AIRBAG SYSTEM CAME ON. MANUAL SAID TO TAKE TO DEALERSHIP IMMEDIATELY. THEY RAN A CHECK AND FOUND THAT THE SPIRAL CABLE ASSEMBLY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. (B1801) I HAD TO PAY OUT OF POCKET $798.44 TO HAVE IT FIXED. THIS TO ME, SOUNDS LIKE A MANUFACTURER DEFECT, AND NOT SOMETHING THAT IS CAUSED BY WEAR AND TEAR FROM THE OWNER. I ASKED THE SERVICE TECH IF THIS IS COMMON AND HE SAID, "OH YA, THIS IS VERY COMMON". MY RESPONSE WAS THEN WHY ISN'T THIS A RECALL PART. *TR
2005 TOYOTA TACOMA VEHICLE IS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO STOP IN INCLEMENT WEATHER WHEN SNOW COVERS ROAD SURFACE OR DRIVING THROUGH STANDING WATER VEHICLE IS ALMOST IMPOSIBLE TO STOP. REPORTED TO TOYOTA DEALER AND WAS TOLD IT WAS A NORMAL CONDITION BECAUSE OF ABS. NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE TO CORRECT THIS CONDITION *CN
1. 2005 TOYOTA TACOMA FRAME RUST. I BOUGHT THE TRUCK LOCALLY HERE IN SPRINGFIELD MO, IT WAS PURCHASED HERE ORIGINALLY. IT WAS CERTIFIED BY TOYOTA. I HAVE FOUND THAT THE FRAME IS RUSTING FROM FRONT TO BACK. SOME OF THE RUST IS REALLY EATING INTO THE METAL (NOT JUST SURFACE RUST). I KNOW THEY HAVE RECALLED MANY 1995-2000 VEHICLES, BUT I FEAR THAT THEY WILL BEGIN TO SEE FRAME ROT ON THESE 2005 + TACOMA'S AS WELL (SOME WHERE THE FRAME BUSTED IN HALF IN THE FRONT). I HAVE READ ONLINE OF MANY PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS. *TR
I WAS TRAVELING ON THE FREEWAY AND WAS CHANGING GEARS WHEN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL SUDDENLY DROPPED TO THE FLOOR AND THE ENGINE SUDDENLY RACED UP TO REDLINE. I HAD THE CLUTCH IN AT THE TIME. I CHECKED TO MAKE SURE MY MAT WAS NOT INTERFERING WITH THE PEDAL. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED WITH THIS TRUCK. I PUMPED THE PEDAL SEVERAL TIMES BUT THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO RACE. I SWITCHED TO THIRD GEAR AND LET OUT THE CLUTCH. THIS BROUGHT THE RPM'S DOWN BUT CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO BEGIN RAPID ACCELERATION. I PUSHED IN THE CLUTCH AND THE ENGINE WENT BACK TO RACING AT REDLINE. AFTER PUMPING THE PEDAL FOR SEVERAL MORE SECONDS THE ENGINE WENT BACK TO NORMAL IDLE. I PUT IT BACK IN GEAR AND CONTINUED WITH MY TRIP. I WORRY ABOUT HOW A LESS EXPERIENCED DRIVER MIGHT HANDLE A PROBLEM LIKE THIS. I AM ALSO CONCERNED ABOUT WHAT THIS BEHAVIOR MIGHT DO TO ENGINE LIFE IF IT KEEPS REPEATING. *TR
MY 05 TACOMA,DASH LIGHT WENT ON. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY "OH YEA, THAT'S BEEN A BIG PROBLEM WITH THOSE MODELS". TURNED OUT IT WAS THE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT, AFTER 85,000 IT CAME ON. IT COST ME $800.00 DOLLARS TO FIX, THEY SAID IT WAS A 5 HOUR JOB, BUT IT ONLY TOOK 2 HOURS BUT CHARGED ME THE $800.00 ANYWAY.THE PART IS CALLED THE SPIRAL CABLE, AND IT ATTACHES TO THE AIR BAG, THEY SAID THEY HAD TO PULL MY WHOLE DASH APART TO FIX. I LATER ASKED THEM "IF THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM,THEN WHY HASN'T IT BEEN RECALLED"? SERVICE SAID , MUST NOT BEEN THAT IMPORTANT ! I HAVE LOGGED MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS , BUT NEVER HEARD A WORD BACK FROM ANYONE. IF I CHOSE TO NOT HAVE IT FIXED, WHAT WOULD OF HAPPENED IF I HAD BEEN IN A HEAD ON CRASH WITH NO AIRBAGS TO DEPLOY, THAT'S WHY I PURCHASED THE TACOMA, FOR IT'S APPARENT SAFETY. *TR
VEHICLE SURGES FORWARD SLIGHTLY WHEN STOPPED AT STOPLIGHT. HAPPENS NEARLY EVERY TIME I STOP THE VEHICLE WITHOUT HAVING IT IN PARK MODE. THE SEVERITY OF THE SURGE SEEMS TO BE PROPORTIONAL WITH THE VELOCITY OF THE VEHICLE PRIOR TO STOPPING (I.E. SURGE IS MORE PRONOUNCED WHEN STOPPING FROM A HIGHER VELOCITY THAN FROM A LOWER VELOCITY). THE SURGE EVENT OCCURS ROUGHLY 2-3 SECONDS AFTER VEHICLE COMES TO A FULL STOP, AND LASTS PERHAPS 0.5 SECONDS THEN GOES AWAY. WITH THE FOOT ON THE BRAKE, THE VEHICLE DOESN'T GO VERY FAR, BUT IT'S A SAFETY CONCERN IN THE EVENT THE SURGE BECOMES UNCONTROLLABLE. CORRECTIVE ACTION HAS BEEN TO MAINTAIN A GREATER-THAN-USUAL DISTANCE FROM THE INTERSECTION OR FROM THE VEHICLE IN FRONT. *TR
ORIGINALLY NOTICED HEAVY RUST STAINS IN DRIVEWAY AND CRAWLED UNDER THE TRUCK TO INSPECT. HEAVY RUST WAS OBSERVED OVER MORE THAN 3/4 OF THE TRUCKS FRAME. LARGE, CHUNKY PIECES OF RUST WERE EASILY SEPARATING FROM THE FAME. FRONT CROSSMEMBER SHOWING HEAVY SIGNS OF DEEP RUST. CONTACTED THE TOYOTA CORP. AND INFORMED THEM OF THE PROBLEM AND THEY SAYING THERE IS CURRENTLY NO RECALL OR PROGRAM IN PLACE FOR THE 2005+ TACOMAS DEALING WITH RUSTY FRAME ISSUES. I ALSO HAVE MANY UNNATURAL NOISES COMING FROM THE ENGINE BAY THAT SOUND IF PARTS ARE NOT CONNECTED PROPERLY OR ARE MAKING CONTACT WITH OTHER PARTS. I WANTED TO FILE A CLAIM TO HOPEFULLY PROMOTE FURTHER ATTENTION TO THIS MODEL TACOMA. IN THE PAST YEARS OTHER TACOMAS HAVE HAD SIMILAR PROBLEMS AND WERE EVENTUALLY ADDRESSED. IS TOYOTA WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO DIE BEFORE THEY ACKNOWLEDGE A SERIOUS PROBLEM WITH THE VEHICLES. *TR
2005 TOYOTA TACOMA HAS CRACKED FRAME. 05 IS A NEW BODY/FRAME STYLE B/C OF THE 99-04 TACOMA DEFECTIVE FRAMES. AFTER TAKING IT TO THE SHOP B/C MY FAN MOTOR WAS ABOUT TO FALL OFF, THAT'S WHEN THE DISCOVERY WAS MADE. MECHANIC STATED THIS VEHICLE WAS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE. IT HAS BEEN REPORTED TO TOYOTA HQ. MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER HAS ALSO CONTACTED TOYOTA. THERE ARE NO RECALLS FOR 2005. MECHANIC/BODY SHOP OWNER STATES IT CANNOT BE REPAIRED. FRAME MUST BE REPLACED, AND HE STATED MOST PEOPLE ARE NOT QUALIFIED TO REPLACE A FRAME, WHICH MAY PRESENT FURTHER SAFETY ISSUES. *TR
SUN VISORS WILL NOT STAY UP PART WAY. THEY DROP COMPLETELY AND BLOCK THE DRIVERS VIEW.I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY OTHER TOYOTAS: 2006 COROLLA, 2007 COROLLA, AND 2010 COROLLA. THE VISOR WOULD DROP AT ALL TIMES WHEN IN USE.
I HAVE A 2005 TOYOTA TACOMA DOUBLE CAB TRD SPORT. THE MOTOR MOUNTS ON MY VEHICLE HAVE BECOME "RIPPED" OFF THE FRAME OF THE VEHICLE SOMEHOW AS TOYOTA HAS STATED TOWARDS ME AND THIS TO ME SEEM LIKE A SAFETY ISSUE. I HAVE HEARD OF ONE INSTANCE OF A GUY WHO WAS DRIVING DOWN THE FREEWAY WHEN HIS ENTIRE FRAME COLLAPSED DUE TO HIS MOTOR MOUNTS CAVING IN HIS FRAME! THIS SEEMS LIKE A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AND MY TRUCK HAS HAD IT HAPPEN AS WELL JUST NOT CAVE IN MY FRAME AND HAS RIPPED AWAY FROM IT. MAKING MY ENGINE SIT CROOKED AND LEANING FORWARD IN MY ENGINE BAY. IT HAS BEEN QUITE SCARY DRIVING IT RECENTLY AND TOOK IT IN AS SOON AS I REALIZED THE PROBLEM. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA TACOMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT A LOUD NOISE WAS EXHIBITED FROM UNDER THE HOOD WHILE DRIVING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER SEVERAL TIMES FOR THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE WAS LOCATED AT THE TRANSMISSION BELL HOUSE, WHICH WAS MADE OF ALUMINUM AND CAUSING THE ABNORMAL NOISE. THE DEALER REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION BELL HOUSE SEVERAL TIMES UNDER THE WARRANTY BUT THE FAILURE WAS NOT CORRECTED. THE BELL HOUSE CONTINUED TO EXHIBIT THE LOUD NOISE. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE SUB FRAME WAS CORRODED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURES BUT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 35,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 92,000.
MY 2005 TOYOTA TACOMA ENGINE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED. THE PEDAL MOVED TO FLOOR AND STAYED THERE. I IMMEDIATELY PUSHED IN THE CLUTCH. I CHECKED TO MAKE SURE THERE WAS NO INTERFERENCE FROM THE RUBBER MAT AND PUMPED THE PEDAL SEVERAL TIMES WHILE COASTING. AFTER ABOUT FIVE SECONDS, THE ENGINE DROPPED FROM REDLINE AND RESUMED NORMAL IDLE. IN AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN A HIGHLY DANGEROUS CONDITION. *TR
2005 TOYOTA TACOMA FRONT MUD FLAP BROKEN AND RUBBED THROUGH THE PAINT PRIOR TO ME KNOWING THE FLAP WAS BROKEN. HAPPENED AT ABOUT 40,000 MILES. NEVER OFFROAD OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT. ALL CITY/HIGHWAY MILES. *TR
THIS IS A SECOND COMPLAINT OF THE ETCH-INTELLIGENT SYSTEM DEFECT OF MY 2005 TOYOTA TACOMA WHICH IS CAUSING SUDDEN ACCELERATION. I REPORTED THIS INCIDENT IMMEDIATELY AFTER IT HAPPENED BUT MY TRUCK IS NOT LISTED ON THE RECENT RECALL LIST. (IT IS ON THE RECALL LIST FOR THE FLOOR MAT BUT NOT THE MORE ACCURATE RECALL FOR THE ETCH-INTELLIGENT SYSTEM.) ON OR ABOUT OCTOBER 2008, I WAS DRIVING FROM NEW JERSEY TO NORTH CAROLINA SOUTHBOUND ON I-95 WITH MY DAUGHTER. THE SPEED LIMIT ON 95 WAS 65 MPH. I WAS DRIVING AT A STEADY PACE OF 60-65 MPH. APPROXIMATELY 5 MILES AFTER I PASSED THE DELWARE BRIDGE, THE TRUCK SUDDENLY ACCELERATED. I TRIED TO BRAKE BUT THE TRUCK WOULD NOT STOP. THE BRAKE FELT LIKE IT WAS STUCK. I TRIED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE AND IT DID NOT DO ANYTHING. THE TRUCK ACCELERATED TO 70 MPH OR SO BUT I CANNOT REMEMBER EXACTLY AND I WAS BRAKING THE WHOLE TIME. I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE TRUCK TO THE SIDE AND FORCE THE GEAR INTO PARK. THE ENGINE LURCHED A BIT BUT STOPPED AND THERE WAS SMELL OF BURNING ENGINE AND TIRE. THANK GOD THERE WERE NOT MANY CARS ON THE ROAD THAT DAY. PLEASE HELP ME IN ADDING 2005 TOYOTA TACOMA TO THE LIST DEFECTIVE ETCH-INTELLIGENT SYSTEM. TW* *TR
WHERE DO I EVEN BEGIN? TOOK THE TRUCK IN BECAUSE IT WAS HAVING ALL SORTS OF PROBLEMS AND TOYOTA SAID IT HAD A BENT FRAME. FROM WHAT? NORMAL DRIVING AFTER 3 YEARS / 112,000MI? THE TRUCK HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT. FIRST THE BED SIDE BODY PANELS STARTED CRACKING THEN A PANEL INSIDE THE FRONT TIRE WELL STARTED TO CRACK. THEN WHEN TURNING ENGINE RADIATOR FAN HIT SHROUD AROUND IT. ANOTHER UNRELATED TO THE FRAME PROBLEM BUT WORTH MENTIONING IS THE FLIMSY TIN CAN TAIL GATES TOYOTA IS PUTTING ON THESE TRUCKS. MINE ALONG WITH THOUSANDS OF OTHERS HAVE HAD THEIRS FOLD IN HALF. IT IS NO SECRET TOYOTA HAS HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE TOYOTA TACOMA FRAMES ON OLDER MODELS (1995-2001) EITHER. LEGAL ACTION NEEDS TO BE BROUGHT AGAINST THIS COMPANY FOR THEIR CHEAP BUILDING PRACTICES BEFORE SOME ONE GETS INJURED OR KILLED ON THE ROAD. I'VE GOT A 1990 CHEVROLET SUBURBAN WITH 170K MI. AND A 1994 TOYOTA CAMRY WITH 91K. MI. AND THEY DON'T HAVE BENT FRAMES OR CRACKING PANELS. I WOULDN'T EXPECT A TRUCK WITH 112K MI. TO HAVE A BENT FRAME FROM NORMAL HIGHWAY DRIVING." *TR

THIS NOISE SOUNDS LIKE A SIREN AND IS VERY STARTLING. THE FIRST TIME THIS HAPPENED, I ALMOST DROVE OFF THE ROAD. IT SOUNDED LIKE I WAS IN THE PATH OF AN EMERGENCY VEHICLE OR HAD JUST HIT SOME TYPE OF ANIMAL. TOYOTA MOTOR CORP. IS AWARE OF THIS CONDITION, BUT WILL NOT FIX IT. THEY HAVE ISSUED A SERVICE BULLETIN, NV006-07, BUT STATED THAT I WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIR. I AM AFRAID THAT OTHERS WILL SWERVE, CRASH , OR BE INJURED BY THIS NOISE. *TR
I PURCHASED A 2005 TACOMA DOUBLE CAB 4X4 SHORT BED WITH TRD OFF ROAD PACKAGE AND TOW PACKAGE NEW IN NOV 2004. AT 37K MILES I PUT A SET OF TRD SPORT WHEEL TAKEOFFS ON MY TRUCK. WHEN I HAD THEM BALANCED AND ROTATED AT 47K (FOR THE SECOND TIME) I NOTICE A SLIGHT VIBRATION THAT SEEMED TO COME AND GO, DIFFERENT SPEEDS, ETC. I TOOK IT BACK AND HAD IT CHECKED AGAIN. THEY SWAPPED FRONTS TO BACK AND THAT SEEMED TO CURE IT. THE SAME THING HAPPENED AT 52K AND AGAIN AT 56K MILES. THE TIRE MAN TALKED ABOUT REPLACING THE TIRES IF IT WOULD MAKE ME HAPPY. AT 60K MILES I PUT ON A NEW SET OF TOP OF THE LINE TIRES. IT STILL HAS THE VIBRATION. IF IT'S NOT THE TIRES, THE TRUCK HAS NEVER BEEN WRECKED OR DAMAGED, WHAT IS CAUSING THIS PROBLEM? PART 2: I STARTED UP THE ENGINE. IT ACTED NORMAL, NO ACCELERATION AND IT EASILY BACKED OUT OF THE SPACE. RELIEVED, I DROVE BACK TO MY BOYFRIEND'S HOUSE. I TURNED IT OVER AND OVER IN MY MIND WHAT HAD HAPPENED, TRYING NOT TO MISS A STEP. MY BOYFRIEND IS VERY FAMILIAR WITH THE MECHANICS OF A CAR, SO AS I EXPLAINED WHAT TOOK PLACE TO HIM AND HE SAID OVER AND OVER THAT IT DIDN'T MAKE ANY SENSE. SEVERAL DAYS AGO, WE DROVE TO DOWNTOWN NEW ORLEANS. I WAS DRIVING AND I HAD THE CRUISE CONTROL AVOIDING THE SPEED TRAP. WE DROVE ABOUT 15 MILES AND PARKED IN A LARGE OUTDOOR PARKING LOT. WE WERE GONE FOR SEVERAL HOURS. WHEN WE GOT BACK TO THE TRUCK, HE DROVE. ABOUT ONE MINUTE OR LESS INTO DRIVE AND WHILE STILL GOING THROUGH THE PAID LOT JUST COMING UP TO RAILROAD TRACKS, HE PUT HIS FOOT ON THE BRAKE AND THE TRUCK ACCELERATED FORWARD, THE PETAL ONCE AGAIN PULLING ITSELF TO THE FLOOR AND THE TRUCK TAKING OFF LIKE A JET. HE HIT THE BRAKE AND I BELIEVE THREW THE TRUCK INTO PARK. I WAS SCARED TO DEATH AND THEN I FELT THAT I HAD BEEN VINDICATED! HE LOOKED AT ME AND SAID, 'WOW' AND AGAIN I TOLD HIM THAT IT WAS NEARLY THE SAME SCENARIO THAT HAPPENED TO ME. HE SAID, YOU HAVE BETTER CALL TOYOTA. LAST MONTH HERE IN LOUISIANA, I DROVE TO THE STORE USING MY CRUISE CONTROL ALONG A 10 MILE HIGHWAY KNOWN FOR FAST CARS AND FASTER TICKETS. IT IS HOT HERE IN LOUISIANA. I HAD THE AC ON AND LEFT IT TURNED IT ON WHEN I WENT INTO THE STORE. THE TRUCK WAS TURNED OFF OF COURSE. WHEN I RETURNED FROM SHOPPING AND BACK INTO MY TRUCK, I TURNED ON THE KEY AND THREW THE TRUCK INTO REVERSE. THE PETAL PULLED ITSELF TO THE FLOOR. IT LEFT MY FOOT AND WENT ALL THE WAY FORWARD. I HIT THE BRAKE AND IT WOULD NOT STOP, SO IN MY CONFUSION, I THREW IT INTO DRIVE AND IT LURCHED FORWARD EVEN WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE. THE WHEELS WERE JUMPING AND THE TRUCK WAS INCHING FORWARD. EVERYONE AROUND ME WAS SCRAMBLING AWAY AS IT SOUNDED AS IF I HAD LITTLE TO NO CONTROL OVER THE ROARING ENGINE; YOU KNOW, SENSING SOMETHING WAS WRONG. ALL OF THIS HAPPENED WITHIN SECONDS AND I HAD ALL MY WEIGHT ON THE BRAKE. I FINALLY HAD THE SENSE TO TURN OFF THE ENGINE AND IT STOPPED, THEN I SAT THERE FOR A SECOND TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT I HAD DONE WRONG. LOOK FOR PART 2 AND 3 TO FOLLOW. *TR
THE SUN VISORS, FIRST ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE, THEN ON THE PASSENGER SIDE, MADE A CRUNCHING SOUND WHEN PULLED DOWN TO BLOCK THE SUN AND, AFTERWARD, WOULD NOT HOLD ITSELF IN ITS UPWARD POSITION. AT FIRST, IT WAS MERELY ANNOYING, SINCE IT DIDN'T BLOCK MUCH OF MY VIEW OUT OF THE WINDSHIELD, BUT WITHIN A MONTH IT WOULD NOT HOLD ITSELF UP AT ALL, WHICH BLOCKED A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF MY FORWARD VIEW OUT OF THE WINDSHIELD. THE 2 LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIPS WERE NOT INTERESTED IN REPLACING THEM, AS MY TACOMA HAD 50,000 MILES ON IT (STANDARD WARRANTY EXPIRED AT 36,000). I EVENTUALLY REMOVED BOTH SUN VISORS, SINCE IT WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE WITH THEM BLOCKING 50% OR MORE OF MY FORWARD VIEW. REPLACEMENTS FROM TOYOTA COST $100 EACH, I DID NOT REPLACE THEM, MAINLY BECAUSE THEY WERE OF THE SAME DESIGN AND I HAVE NO CONFIDENCE THEY WOULD LAST ANY LONGER. I DISASSEMBLED (DESTRUCTIVELY IS THE ONLY WAY TO DO SO) ONE OF THE BROKEN VISORS AND DISCOVERED THAT THE VISOR PIVOTS ON A SHORT METAL SHAFT. ON THIS SHAFT IS A, ROUGHLY, C-SHAPED METAL CLIP INSIDE A PLASTIC HOUSING. THE CLIP APPEARS TO HOLD THE TENSION NECESSARY TO KEEP THE VISOR IN PLACE. THE PLASTIC HOUSING, IN TURN, CONNECTS THE METAL CLIP TO THE REST OF THE VISOR. HOWEVER, THE PLASTIC HOUSING AROUND THE CLIP WAS BROKEN, ALLOWING THE CLIP TO ROTATE WITHIN AND THE VISOR TO DROOP. THERE IS NO FIX TO REPAIR THIS PLASTIC HOUSING AS THE FABRIC TRIM HAS TO BE REMOVED TO ACCESS IT. REPLACEMENT OF THE VISOR ASSEMBLY IS THE ONLY OPTION. *TR
IN JUNE 2008, WE EXPERIENCED A WRECK THAT WE AT FIRST THOUGHT MUST HAVE BEEN RELATED TO MY WIFE MISTAKENLY HITTING THE GAS WHEN SHE THOUGHT SHE HAD HIT THE BRAKE. AT THE TIME, SHE HAD JUST TURNED INTO OUR NEIGHBORHOOD AND WOULD HAVE BEEN TRAVELING SLOWLY BUT THE TACOMA HIT THE CENTER MEDIAN, WENT ACROSS IT AND ENDED UP IN THE OTHER SIDE FACING THE OTHER DIRECTION. IT DID CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE UNDERNEATH THE TRUCK. AT THE TIME, THE TOYOTA DEALER MENTIONED NOTHING ABOUT ACCELERATION PROBLEMS. WE COULD NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT HAD HAPPENED BUT HAD NO OTHER EXPLANATION. DRIVER TOOK TRUCK TO DEALER WITH END 2 WEEKS FOR OIL CHANGE AND TOLD THEM OF INCIDENT. THEY CHECKED TRUCK AND FOUND NO CAUSE OR PROBLEM WITH THE TRUCK. 3RD INCIDENT TOOK PLACE ON MARCH 7, 2008. DRIVER HAD CRUISE CONTROL SET AT ABOUT 64 MPH. DRIVER TAPPED BRAKE PEDAL TO TURN OFF THE CRUISE CONTROL. THE TRUCK ENGINE THEN STARTED TO RACE AND THE TRUCK STARTED TO FISH TAIL. DRIVER HIT BRAKE PEDAL AGAIN AND THE TRUCK WENT FROM PASSING LANE OFF THE RIGHT SIDE OF ROADWAY AND HIT A DITCH AND ROLLED 3 TO 5 TIMES. TRUCK CAME TO REST ON ITS ROOF. DRIVER WAS SEAT BELTED IN AND HAD TO TURN KEY OFF TO GET THE TRUCK TO STOP THE ENGINE FROM RACING. TIRES WERE IN VERY GOOD SHAPE IN 3RD INCIDENT AND IN ALL INCIDENTS FLOOR MAT WAS NOT STUCK IN GAS PEDAL AND HAD NO PART IN INCIDENTS. 3RD INCIDENT ROAD WAY WAS WET AND IT STARTED SLEETING AT THE TIME OF ROLLOVER WRECK. ROADWAY WAS NOT SNOW COVERED. ALL INCIDENTS TOOK PLACE ON 4 LANE ROADWAYS. *TR
