UNINTENDED ACCELERATION IN A 2008 TOYOTA TACOMA. *TR
2008 TOYOTA TACOMA UPON SLOWING AND APPLYING BRAKE, VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED AND BRAKE COULD NOT STOP IT. THE TIRES WERE SPINNING AND VEHICLE WAS VIBRATING, TIRES WERE SMOKING. IT STOPPED RACING WHEN IGNITION WAS TURNED OFF. *TR
I WAS STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT WHEN I FELT THE BRAKE "GIVE" AND THEN THE ENGINE BEGAN TO ACCELERATE. NO AMOUNT OF PUSHING ON THE BRAKE WOULD STOP THE ENGINE. THE TIRES WERE SMOKING AND SQUEALING AND THE VEHICLE WAS LURCHING. ONLY SHUTTING OFF THE ENGINE STOPPED THE RACING ENGINE. THE FLOOR MAT WAS NOT INVOLVED. *TR
WHILE DRIVING N FROM DENVER ON I-25 ON 11-25-2009, SPEED LIMIT OF 75MPH, I HAD THE CRUISE CONTROL OPERATING SET AT A SPEED OF 75-77 MPH . THERE WAS NO FEET ON EITHER GAS OR BRAKE PEDAL. NOT UNTIL I FOUND THE TACOMA TRUCK CRUISING AT A SPEED ABOVE 90MPH DID I REALIZE SOMETHING WAS WRONG W/THE TRUCK. I USED THE BRAKE PEDAL AND DISENGAGED THE CRUISE CONTROL AND THE VEHICLE CAME UNDER MY CONTROL. AFTER RE-SETTING THE CRUISE CONTROL TO 75 +/- MPH, TO TEST THE ISSUE, IT OCCURRED AGAIN. I CHOSE TO COMPLETE THE TRIP W/O CRUISE CONTROL W/ DILIGENT OVERSITE. *TR
REFERENCING MY 2008 4.0L SIX-CYLINDER TOYOTA TACOMA WITH DEMAND 4X4, 5-SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION AND TRD SPORT PACKAGE THAT INCLUDES A LIMITED SLIP REAR DIFFERENTIAL, I EXPERIENCED AN UNANTICIPATED UNEXPLAINABLE LOSS OF ENGINE POWER. NOTE THAT THE TRUCK DOES NOT HAVE A USER CONTROLLABLE TORQUE LIMITING OR TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM. WHILE ATTEMPTING TO SLOWLY TRAVERSE A GRASSY SURFACE WHILE IN TWO-WHEEL DRIVE THE VEHICLE INVOLUNTARILY CAME TO A STANDSTILL. THE ENGINE HAD LOST POWER AND THE VEHICLE REFUSED TO MOVE. THE REAR WHEELS DID NOT SUFFER ANY LOSS OF TRACTION IN OTHER WORDS THEY DID NOT LOSE TRACTION AND SPIN AND COULD NOT BE MADE TO SPIN. APPLYING FULL THROTTLE DID NOT HELP; ALTHOUGH NOT MISFIRING WHILE RUNNING SMOOTHLY, THE ENGINE LACKED MEANINGFUL POWER AND WOULD NOT GAIN ANY SIGNIFICANT RPMS UNDER ANY THROTTLE POSITION. THERE WERE NO ABNORMAL GAUGE READINGS OR INSTRUMENT PANEL WARNING LIGHTS INDICATING A PROBLEM. AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS AT WORKING THE TRUCK FREE BY GOING FROM NEUTRAL TO DRIVE I WAS ABLE TO MOVE IT ONTO PAVEMENT BUT, WHILE ON THE ROAD, THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO EXHIBIT A GROSS LOSS OF POWER AND HAD DIFFICULTY ATTAINING EVEN 40 MPH. AFTER DRIVING SEVERAL MILES DOWN THE ROAD, THE FAULT EVENTUALLY CLEARED AND THE ENGINE RETURNED TO ITS NORMAL ENERGETIC SELF. BECAUSE THE VEHICLE'S PERFORMANCE RETURNED TO NORMAL (AND IT WAS SUNDAY) IT WAS NOT TAKEN TO A REPAIR SHOP. ON ARRIVING AT MY DESTINATION, I CONNECTED A OBD2 DIAGNOSTIC TOOL TO THE VEHICLE BUT NO TROUBLE CODE WAS INDICATED. (THERE WAS NO INDICATION OF WATER IN THE VEHICLE'S GASOLINE AND THE GASOLINE WAS FRESH AND OF PROPER OCTANE; THE ENGINE OR IGNITION SYSTEM WERE NOT WET. NO POSSIBLE CAUSES FOR THE POWER LOSS WERE OBSERVED.) AN UNEXPLAINED LOSS OF ENGINE POWER IN A MOVING VEHICLE CAN PROVE DISASTROUS IF NOT DANGEROUS. ATTEMPTS AT CONTACTING TOYOTA IN ORDER TO IDENTIFY A CAUSE AND REMEDY FOR THE PROBLEM HAVE PROVEN FUTILE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA TACOMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE AIR BAG WARNING LAMP ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 40,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 98,000.
DRIVING DOWNHILL @45MPH AND LET OFF THE GAS BUT IT ACCELERATED EVEN MORE, PUT BRAKE ON AND STILL DIDN'T SLOW DOWN, ONCE DOWN THE HILL IT FINALLY KICKED INTO GEAR.. IT DOES THIS REGULARLY, ALMOST DAILY. SEEMS TO NOT KICK INTO GEAR, ESPECIALLY 3RD AND 4TH GEARS.*TR
FUEL FILLER NECK FLAP BROKE OFF AND FELL INTO THE TANK.GAS MILEAGE IS TERRIBLE. LEFT TURN SIGNAL STAYED ON AND AIR CONDITIONER WAS WORKING INTERMITTENTLY. TOOK VEHICLE TO CHAMPION TOYOTA ON 10-15-09. DEALERSHIP STATED THAT FLAP INSIDE TANK IS NORMAL... THEY REPAIRED TURN SIGNAL AND STATED THAT THIS COULD HAVE CAUSED THE A/C TO NOT WORK PROPERLY. DEALERSHIP STATED THAT WIRES WERE BURNT TOGETHER CAUSING THE TURN SIGNAL TO STAY ON. RECEIVED VEHICLE BACK ON 10-20-09. ALSO, I HAD TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO DEALERSHIP A FEW MONTHS PRIOR TO THE 10-15-09 INCIDENT CONCERNING A/C NOT WORKING, THEY SAID THEY CORRECTED PROBLEM. ALSO, TAILGATE HAS BOWED AFTER MOVING A LIGHT DRYER. DEALER STATES THAT TAILGATE IS NOT RATED. *TR
I PREVIOUSLY FILED ODI COMPLAINT 10282779 TO REPORT TO TWO INSTANCES WHERE MY TACOMA ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN AT A TIME WHEN I HAD ABOUT 17,000 MI. ON THE VEHICLE. THEREAFTER I TRIED TO TROUBLESHOOT THE PROBLEM. THE ONLY THING THAT CHANGED PRIOR TO THE ONSET OF THE SPONTANEOUS ACCELERATION WAS THAT I ACQUIRED A BLACKBERRY CURVE TO REPLACE MY PREVIOUS CELL PHONE. MY OLD CELL PHONE WAS SMALLER, SO WHILE DRIVING I USUALLY KEPT IT IN THE SLOT NEXT TO MY GEAR SHIFTER. MY BLACKBERRY WAS MUCH BIGGER AND DIDN'T FIT IN THE SLOT. THEREFORE I PUT IT IN THE CUP HOLDER UNDERNEATH MY DASHBOARD. IT WAS THEN THAT I STARTED EXPERIENCING THE ACCELERATION PROBLEM. SUBSEQUENTLY, I STARTED CARRYING MY BLACKBERRY EITHER IN MY BACKPACK ON THE PASSENGER SEAT OR IN THE SLOT WHERE I USED TO KEEP MY SMALLER CELL PHONE AND I NO LONGER CHARGE THE BLACKBERRY USING THE CHARGER THAT PLUGS INTO MY LIGHTER SOCKET IN MY DASHBOARD. WITH ONE EXCEPTION (WHICH I SHALL DESCRIBE) THIS HAS SOLVED THE PROBLEM OVER THE 9,000 MI. SINCE IT BEGAN. ON 10/21/2009, I WAS DRIVING MY TACOMA AT A TIME WHEN I NEEDED TO CHARGE MY BLACKBERRY. I PLUGGED MY BLACKBERRY INTO THE CAR CHARGER AND PLACED THE BLACKBERRY IN MY BACKPACK ON THE PASSENGER SEAT. WITHIN 10 MILES MY TACOMA STARTED ACCELERATING UNCONTROLLABLY. I SHIFTED THE TRUCK INTO A LOWER GEAR AND UNPLUGGED MY PHONE FROM THE CHARGER, BUT THE VEHICLE KEPT ACCELERATING. I SHIFTED TO NEUTRAL AND TURNED OFF THE ENGINE WHEN IT STARTED TO REDLINE, AND STEERED THE VEHICLE OFF THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. AFTER I STOPPED, I SHIFTED INTO PARK AND TURNED THE IGNITION AND THE ENGINE AGAIN STARTED TO REDLINE. I LET IT REST A COUPLE OF MINUTES, AND IT STARTED NORMALLY AND I DROVE OFF. I NO LONGER CHARGE MY BLACKBERRY WITH THE LIGHTER CHARGER AND HAVE NOT HAD ANY SUBSEQUENT PROBLEMS. IT IS MY BELIEF THAT MY BLACKBERRY'S ELECTROMAGNETIC FREQUENCIES INTERFERE WITH MY TACOMA'S ELECTRICAL SYSTEM WHEN THE PHONE IS EITHER TOO NEAR THE DASH OR PLUGGED INTO THE CAR CHARGER. *TR
MY 2008 TOYOTA TACOMA ACCELERATES ON ITS OWN WITHOUT WARNING WHEN DRIVING NORMAL SPEEDS. THIS HAPPENED TWICE IN THE LAST WEEK. BOTH TIMES THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS NOT BLOCKED OR IMPEDED. WHEN I SUBSEQUENTLY SHIFTED TO NEUTRAL, THE FIRST TIME THE ENGINE RETURNED TO NORMAL, THE SECOND TIME THE ENGINE RACED TO REDLINE SO I TURNED OFF THE IGNITION. THEREAFTER, I STARTED THE ENGINE AND IT RACED TO REDLINE, SO I SHUT IT DOWN. THE SECOND TIME I STARTED IT, THE ENGINE RETURNED TO NORMAL. THE FIRST TIME THE PROBLEM HAPPENED, I THINK THAT HAD BEEN USING CRUISE CONTROL EARLIER IN THE 45 MINUTE DRIVE. THE SECOND TIME, CRUISE CONTROL HAD NEVER BEEN TURNED ON OR ENGAGED AND THE PROBLEM OCCURRED IN THE FIRST 2/10 OF A MILE INTO MY DRIVE. THE PEDAL DID NOT GET STUCK AFTER I HAD PRESSED IT ALL THE WAY DOWN. IN BOTH CASES, I WAS DRIVING A CONSTANT 35-45 MPH WHEN THE TRUCK TOOK OFF ON ME. WHEN I SAY IT ACCELERATED, I MEAN PEDAL TO THE METAL ACCELERATION - NOT GRADUAL LIKE WHEN CRUISE CONTROL RESUMES. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIR. THEY TESTED IT AND DROVE IT 80 MILES, BUT THEY COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG OR ANYTHING THAT COULD BE FIXED UNDER WARRANTY. I CALLED TOYOTA'S NATIONAL OFFICE, AND THEY SAID THAT IF THE DEALER DIDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG, THEN THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. I WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THEY WOULD HAVE SHOWN SERIOUS CONCERN FOR THIS DANGEROUS PRODUCT DEFECT. *TR
MY ACCELERATOR STUCK TWO DIFFERENT TIMES DURING A RECENT DRIVE TO WORK. THOUGH I BELIEVE IT WAS DUE TO THE FLOOR MAT PROBLEM THAT HAS PROMPTED THE RECENT RECALL, MY ATTEMPT TO GET ANSWERS FROM THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP PROMPTED A RESPONSE THAT TOYOTA HADN'T FIGURED OUT HOW TO FIX IT YET AND THEY WERE DRILLING HOLES IN THE BACK OF THE MAT AND USING ZIP TIES TO SECURE THE MAT TO THE FRONT OF THE SEAT FRAME. THAT WAS NOT HOW I WANTED IF FIXED. ATTEMPTS TO CONTACT TOYOTA OF AMERICA RESULTED IN LOTS OF RECORDED MESSAGES AND NOTHING MORE. I HAVE YET TO RECEIVE ANY OFFICIAL RECALL NOTICE, BUT, HAVING HAD THE TWO FRIGHTENING EXPERIENCES, I FEEL THE PROBLEM NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED IMMEDIATELY BY THE MANUFACTURER. AND IT NEEDS TO BE MORE THAN INSTRUCTIONS TO REMOVE THE MAT. *TR
2008 TOYOTA TACOMA TRUCK FLOORMATS WERE POSED AS A SAFETY HAZARD AND RECALL WAS ISSUED SEPT. 2009. I AM OWNER OF A 2008 TACOMA TRUCK. AS OF THIS DATE JUNE 27, 2010, I HAVE NOT RECEIVED ANY CORRESPONDENCE FROM TOYOTA OR MY LOCAL DEALER REGARDING REPLACEMENT SOLUTION. *TR
2008 TOYOTA TACOMA TRD OFF-ROAD LARGE, SUDDEN, UNEXPECTED INCREASE IN ENGINE RPMS WHILE STOPPED AT A RED TRAFFIC LIGHT. I HAD JUST COME TO A COMPLETE STOP AT A RED LIGHT WHEN THE ENGINE SUDDENLY BEGAN TO ROAR. WHEN THIS HAPPENED, I WAS NOT ABLE TO KEEP THE TRUCK FROM MOVING FORWARD BY APPLYING ADDITIONAL BRAKING PRESSURE. A MAN WHO WAS ABOUT TO CROSS THE STREET IN FRONT OF THE TRUCK HEARD THE NOISE AND JUMPED BACK ONTO THE CURB TO AVOID BEING HIT. THE TRUCK PROCEEDED THROUGH THE INTERSECTION AND APPROX. ANOTHER 100 FEET BEFORE THE RPMS RETURNED TO NORMAL AND THE VEHICLE CAME TO A STOP. I WAS VERY FORTUNATE THERE WAS NO CROSS TRAFFIC AT THE TIME THIS PROBLEM OCCURRED. APPROX MILEAGE IS 10K. PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING: 1 - MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE, NOT THE GAS PEDAL, AND I DO NOT DRIVE USING BOTH FEET, AND MY SHOE SIZE IS 8. 2 - THE FLOOR MAT WAS LYING FLAT ON THE FLOOR WHEN THIS WAS HAPPENED. 3 - I AM VERY FAMILIAR WITH THE SLIGHT INCREASE IN RPMS THAT HAPPENS WHEN THE AIR CONDITIONING CYCLES, AND THIS WAS SEVERAL ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE BEYOND THAT. THIS IS THE 5TH TOYOTA PICKUP I HAVE OWNED IN THE PAST 12 YEARS, AND THE ONLY ONE TO HAVE THIS KIND OF THIS ISSUE. THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE DESIGN OF THESES TRUCKS AND IT CAUSES AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SITUATION WHEN IT OCCURS. I WAS WELL AWARE OF THE COMPLAINTS YOU HAVE RECEIVED FROM OTHERS FOR THIS VERY SAME PROBLEM, LONG BEFORE EXPERIENCING IT MYSELF. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER; HOWEVER, THE TECHNICIANS WERE UNABLE TO IDENTIFY THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 16,200 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WERE 16,900.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA TACOMA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH, THE CONTACT SMELLED A FUEL ODOR. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE FUEL LINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. ON ANOTHER OCCASION, WHEN THE CLUTCH WAS SHIFTED, A BURNING ODOR EMITTED INSIDE THE VEHICLE WITHOUT WARNING. IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE CLUTCH FAILED TO SWITCH GEARS INTERMITTENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE VEHICLE OPERATING AS DESIGNED, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 140,000.
I WAS DRIVING WESTBOUND ON I-90 (KENNEDY EXPRESSWAY) AT APPROXIMATELY 9:40 AM ON SATURDAY, AUGUST 8, 2009, IN MY 2008 TOYOTA TACOMA. I WAS TRAVELING AT APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH WHEN I APPLIED THE BRAKES AS A CAR IN FRONT OF ME SLOWED TO EXIT THE EXPRESSWAY. WHEN THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME EXITED, I STEPPED ON THE GAS PEDAL AND MY TRUCK IMMEDIATELY BEGAN TO ACCELERATE AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED. I SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES BUT THE TRUCK CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE, EVENTUALLY REACHING 80 MPH. I STEERED THE TRUCK INTO THE FAR RIGHT LANE AND WAS NOW PRESSING AS HARD AS I COULD WITH BOTH FEET ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. I WAS ABLE TO GET THE TRUCK DOWN TO APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH, AT WHICH POINT I DROVE ONTO THE SHOULDER AND PUT THE TRUCK IN NEUTRAL AND THEN PARK, WHERE THE TRUCK FINALLY CAME TO A STOP. THE ENTIRE INCIDENT LASTED LESS THAN 30 SECONDS. WITHIN 15 MINUTES AN IDIOT TRUCK PULLED UP BEHIND ME AND TOWED ME A SHORT DISTANCE UP THE EXPRESSWAY TO A SAFETY AREA, WHERE I WAITED FOR THE AAA TOW TRUCK TO ARRIVE. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE TOYOTA DEALER WHERE I HAD PURCHASED IT LESS THAN 2 YEARS BEFORE. THE DEALER KEPT MY TRUCK UNTIL AUGUST 13, AND I WAS TOLD THAT THE REASON THE TRUCK ACCELERATED WAS BECAUSE THE GAS PEDAL GOT STUCK UNDER THE HEAVY DUTY FLOOR MATS WHICH I HAD PURCHASED FROM THE DEALER AT THE TIME I BOUGHT MY TRUCK. I TOLD THE SERVICE MANAGER THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO WAY THE PEDAL HAD GOTTEN STUCK UNDERNEATH THE FLOOR MAT, BECAUSE THE FLOOR MAT WAS NOT POSITIONED SO FAR FORWARD THAT THE PEDAL COULD HAVE GOTTEN STUCK ON IT. THE SERVICE MANAGER TOLD ME THE ONLY WAY THEY GOT THE TRUCK TO REPLICATE WHAT HAD HAPPENED TO ME WAS WHEN THE GAS PEDAL GOT STUCK ON THE FLOOR MAT, BUT I LET HIM KNOW THAT I STRONGLY DISAGREED WITH WHAT HE WAS TELLING ME. I KNOW THE GAS PEDAL DID NOT GET STUCK UNDER THE FLOOR MAT IN THIS INCIDENT. I TOLD THE SERVICE MANAGER TO REMOVE MY FLOOR MATS, BECAUSE IF THIS EVER HAPPENED AGAIN I DID NOT WANT TOYOTA TO BE ABLE TO USE THE FLOOR MATS AS AN EXCUSE. *TR
INCHING INTO A PARKING SPACE IN A PARKING GARAGE...THROTTLE SEEMED TO OPEN ALL THE WAY SUDDENLY AND WITH ONLY THREE FEET LEFT TO THE WALL THE TRUCK HIT AT FULL THROTTLE DOING 5,246.00 DOLLARS IN DAMAGE. FRONT GRILL; HOOD; FRONT RT FENDER;FRONT RT DOOR; RADIATOR; HEADLIGHT ALL REPLACED. HAVE REPORTED TO TOYOTA CORPORATE AND TOLD TO TAKE TO DEALERSHIP. TOOK TO DEALER ORIGINALLY AND WAS TOLD NO RECALL ON TACOMAS. HAVE HAD TWO THROTTLE STICKS AFTER WHILE ON FREEWAY. BOTH ONLY LASTING 5 SECONDS OR SO. *TR

THE CONTACT STATED WITHIN A FEW DAYS OF RECEIVING NHTSA RECALL CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER : 09V388000(VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:ACCELERATOR PEDAL); SHE EXPERIENCED THE VEHICLE LUNGING FORWARD WHEN SHE WAS AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER WHO ADVISED HER THAT THEY REPAIRED THE RECALL AND WOULD NOT OFFER HER ANY ASSISTANCE. A FEW MONTHS LATER SHE RECEIVED A RECALL IN REGARDS TO NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 11V148000(TIRES:PRESSURE MONITORING AND REGULATING SYSTEMS) AND WAS ADVISED BY THE DEALER THAT SHE DOESN'T HAVE THE TIRES SPECIFIED IN THE RECALL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 9,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.

GOING INTO PARKING LOTS WITH BUMPY ENTRANCES, OVER RAILROAD TRACKS. IT ACTS LIKE THE ABS IS ACTIVATING. BUT WHEN IT DOES YOU LOSE BRAKING CONTROL. I THOUGHT THAT REPLACING THE BRAKE CALIPERS WOULD CORRECT THIS PROBLEM BUT IT HAS NOT. *TR

I ACCELERATED TO PASS A SLOW MOVING VEHICLE IN THE MIDDLE LANE, THE THROTTLE STUCK WIDE OPEN AND I WAS SPEEDING AS FAST AS THIS VEHICLE COULD GO, I TRIED BRAKING WITH ONE FOOT, THEN 2 FEET, NOTHING WAS SLOWING ME DOWN. I WAS CONCENTRATING ON WHAT WAS AROUND ME AND NOT THE SPEEDOMETER OR GAUGES. I NOTICED A GRAVEL BERM ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE PARKWAY AND THOUGHT MY ONLY WAY OF GETTING THIS TRUCK STOPPED WOULD BE TO TRY AND GET INTO THE GRAVEL BUT KNEW AT THE SPEED IN WHICH I WAS GOING THAT I WOULD PROBABLY FLIP THE VEHICLE. ON 08/24/08, MY HUSBAND AND I PURCHASED A 2008 TOYOTA TACOMA TRUCK. ON 12/22/2008, HE WAS COMING TO A STOP AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT BEHIND ANOTHER VEHICLE. SUDDENLY, WITHOUT WARNING, THE ENGINE SEEMED TO ENGAGE AT FULL THROTTLE. HIS RIGHT FOOT WAS NOT ON THE GAS PEDAL, BUT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL AS IT SHOULD BE WHILE WAITING FOR THE LIGHT TO CHANGE TO GREEN. STARTLED, HE PUT BOTH FEET ON THE BRAKE PEDAL AS THE ACCELERATION OF THE ENGINE SEEMED TO OVERTAKE THE ABILITY TO BRAKE. THE TRUCK LURCHED FORWARD AND HIT THE CAR IN FRONT WHICH STOPPED THE MOMENTUM AND KILLED THE ENGINE. THE ACCELERATION AND POWER OF THE ENGINE WAS SO GREAT THAT THIS ALL HAPPENED IN ABOUT 3-5 SECONDS. WHEN HE RESTARTED THE ENGINE, EVERYTHING SEEMED TO BE FINE AS THE TRUCKS COMPUTER SEEMED TO RESET ITSELF. HE REPORTED THIS TO TOYOTA AND ASKED THAT THE TRUCK BE CHECKED OUT. WHEN WE WENT TO PICK UP THE TRUCK AT HOOMAN TOYOTA, WHERE A FACTORY TECH CAME TO INSPECT IT, HE WAS TOLD THAT THE BRAKING SYSTEM WAS FINE AND ACCELERATION SYSTEM (PEDAL LINKAGE) WAS FINE AS WELL. HE WAS EVEN TOLD THAT THE FLOOR MAT WAS UNHOOKED AND PROBABLY GOT STUCK ON TOP OF THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THE FLOOR MATS WERE NOT UNHOOKED WHEN WE DROPPED OFF THE TRUCK. MY HUSBAND TRIED THE FLOOR MAT ON TOP OF THE PEDAL WHILE STEPPING ON THE BRAKE AND THE RPM DID NOT GO UP MUCH AT ALL, CERTAINLY NOT ENOUGH TO OVERPOWER THE BRAKING SYSTEM AS THE TECH SUGGESTED. WE BELIEVE THERE WAS A COMPUTER MALFUNCTION AND NOT A MECHANICAL MALFUNCTION WHICH WAS THAT THE TECH CHECKED OUT. THE CASE MANAGER WAS INFORMED OF THIS BEFORE AND AFTER THE INSPECTION. AFTER THE RECALL NOTICE ON TV IN AUGUST, WE REMOVED THE FLOOR MATS FROM THE TRUCK, A SECOND INCIDENT OCCURRED 10/19/09 (WITH NO FLOOR MATS) WHICH DID NOT RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT. AFTER REPEATED BRAKE APPLICATION HE WAS ABLE TO DECELERATE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION. AFTER TWO DAYS OF INSPECTION, THE TECHNICIANS COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. DRIVING MY 2008 TOYOTA TACOMA PRERUNNER (ODOMETER 12226). RETURNED FROM SHORT TRIP TO VISIT FRIEND (APPROXIMATELY 1.5 MILES AWAY). TURNED TO PULL INTO DOUBLE GARAGE. AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION WAS IN LOWER GEAR 2 OR 3. BRAKED APPROPRIATELY TO STOP IN GARAGE. STARTED TO SHIFT TOWARDS PARK. ENGINE REV'D UP TO VERY HIGH RPM. REAR TIRES STARTED SPINNING FORWARD. VEHICLE STARTED MOVING FORWARD AGAINST BRAKES. APPLIED HEAVY BRAKES. ENGINE WAS STILL RACING. VEHICLE CONTINUED TO MOVE FORWARD, IMPACTING STORAGE CABINETS AGAINST WALL. ALL THIS OCCURRED IN 2-3 SECONDS. NO TIME TO REACT. RELATIVELY SLOW IMPACT (DUE TO BRAKES). FINALLY SHUT OFF ENGINE WITH KEY, BUT TOO LATE. . DAMAGE TO GARAGE WALL AND FRONT OF VEHICLE. NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM BEFORE. RESTARTED ENGINE LATER, AND COULD NOT DUPLICATE PROBLEM IN DRIVEWAY. HAD VEHICLE CHECKED BY NEAREST DEALER NEXT DAY. THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE PROBLEM. THEY HAD HEARD OF VERY FEW SIMILAR PROBLEMS. TECHNICIAN SAID ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS STICKING SLIGHTLY... DEPENDING ON WHERE PRESSURE WAS APPLIED ON PEDAL. THIS WAS NOT LIKELY CAUSE BECAUSE FOOT WAS OFF ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND ENGINE IDLING AT LOW RPM BEFORE PROBLEM OCCURRED. TECHNICIAN ATTEMPTED TO DOWNLOAD PROGRAM UPDATE WHICH (I THINK) WOULD HAVE ELIMINATED AN 'INCREASED RPM TO BURN OFF EXCESS WASTE IN CATALYTIC CONVERTER'... BUT DID NOT DOWNLOAD BECAUSE THIS FIX WAS ONLY FOR VEHICLES WITH SUPER CHARGER. DEALER COULD NOT FIND SIMILAR PROBLEM IN THEIR DATABASE... BUT THEY'LL KEEP CHECKING. ROOT CAUSE OF PROBLEM IS NOT YET KNOWN. I CONSIDER MYSELF A VERY SAFE DRIVER. I WAS VERY FAMILIAR WITH THE VEHICLE AND THE GARAGE ENTRY PROCESS WAS NOTHING NEW TO ME. *TR
OUR 2008 TOYOTA TACOMA PRERUNNER EXPERIENCED UNCONTROLLED ACCELERATION ON 1/15/2008. WE FILED THE EVENT WITH NHTSA (REFER TO ODI 10248942, NHTSA ACTION NUMBER DP08001 FOR ALL DETAIL). THAT PETITION WAS DENIED. NOTE THAT, IN NHTSA'S RESPONSE, THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT ERROR IN THE VEHICLE YEAR (THE VEHICLE IS 2008). THE PROBLEM WE EXPERIENCED ON 11/15/2008 HAS NOT REPEATED AS OF THIS DATE, BUT WE ARE CERTAIN THAT WE ARE STILL EXPOSED TO HIGH RISK OF RECURRENCE. IN VIEW OF RECENT DEVELOPMENTS WITH TOYOTA (MULTIPLE RECALLS, ETC), WE REQUEST THAT NHTSA RECONSIDER OUR CASE, AND APPROVE THE PETITION, BECAUSE A SIGNIFICANT PROBLEM DOES IN FACT EXIST. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA TACOMA. WHILE DRIVING 5-10 MPH DURING RAINY WEATHER CONDITIONS HE ENGAGED THE BRAKES,THEY LOCKED UP AND THE VEHICLE SLID INTO A TREE. HE STATED THAT THERE WAS SOME DAMAGE TO THE FRONT BUMPER. THE FAILURE ONLY HAPPENED WHENEVER IT RAINED OR WHEN HE USED THE VEHICLE FOR TOWING ON THE SAND. HE CALLED THE DEALER AND WAS ADVISED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS PERFORMING NORMALLY. THE FAILURE RECURRED CAUSING HIM TO CRASH INTO A TREE AND DAMAGE THE REAR BUMPER. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO STATED THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. HE STATED THAT THE FAILURE OCCURRED AT LEAST A DOZEN TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 8,500. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 35,000.

THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 26,000. UPDATED 03/30/10 *BF THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE HAS AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM AND THE VEHICLE DOESN'T GO BACK TO IDLE IN BETWEEN GEARS; ESPECIALLY BETWEEN 4TH AND 5TH GEAR. AND A SLIGHT TO MODERATE DOWN HILL THE RPM'S DON'T GO TO IDLE. UPDATED 08/18/10

RAIN WATER/DROPS ON DOOR WINDOW AND MIRROR GLASS (ALSO CONDENSATION ON MIRROR GLASS) ACCUMULATES AND DOES NOT CLEAR OFF (IT JUST SITS THERE) WHEN DRIVING; THERE DOESN'T APPEAR TO BE ANY AIR MOVEMENT ACROSS THE GLASS TO MOVE THE WATER/DROPLETS. THE REDUCED VISIBILITY TO THE PASSENGER'S SIDE MIRROR MAKES FOR A VERY REAL HAZARD WHEN TRYING TO MERGE OR CHANGE TRAFFIC LANES. THIS IS ONLY AN ISSUE DURING NON-DAYLIGHT HOURS WHEN THERE ARE NO STREET LIGHTS TO ILLUMINATE THE ROADWAYS AND TO PROVIDE EASIER VISIBILITY TO THE SIDE MIRROR.. *TR
I HAVE A 2008 TOYOTA TACOMA THAT I BOUGHT NEW IN SUMMER OF 2008. I HAVE HAD THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL FAIL TO RETURN TO THE IDLE POSITION ON TWO OCCASIONS. WHEN APPLYING BRAKES ON MY 2008 TOYOTA TACOMA EXTENDED CAB 4X4 TO COME TO A STOP, THE BRAKE PEDAL GOES DOWN ALMOST TO THE FLOOR, ABOUT 2 INCHED FROM THE FLOOR. THIS HAS HAPPENED SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS NEW. AT ABOUT 18000 MILES I REPORTED THE ISSUE TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY CHECKED THE VEHICLE BRAKES AND STATED THE PEDAL MOVEMENT WAS NORMAL. I HAD THE FRONT BREAKS REPLACED AT 47000 MILES AND THE PROBLEM PERSIST. THE EXCESSIVE BRAKE PEDAL MOVEMENT HAPPENS EVERY TIME I ATTEMPT TO STOP. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 09V388000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:ACCELERATOR PEDAL) BUT THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER BUT THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT THEN SPOKE WITH THE MANUFACTURER BUT RECEIVED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN, BUT THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 39,000.
I WANT TO FILE A CLASS ACTION LAW SUIT CAUSE MY HUSBANDS LIFE WAS TAKEN DO TO HIS TRUCK HAVING DEFECTS AND WAS JUST NOW RECALLED.
